Anthropogenic deposition of reactive nitrogen (N) has increased during the 20th century, and is considered an important driver of shifts in ecosystem functions and biodiversity loss. The objective of the present study was to identify those ecosystem functions that best evidence a target ecosystem’s sensitivity to N deposition, taking coastal heathlands as an example. We conducted a three-year field experiment in heathlands of the island Fehmarn (Baltic Sea, North Germany), which currently are subject to a background deposition of 9 kg N ha−1 yr−1. We experimentally applied six levels of N fertilisation (application of 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1), and quantified the growth responses of different plant species of different life forms (dwarf shrubs, graminoids, bryophytes, lichens) as well as shifts in the C:N ratios of plant tissue and humus horizons. For an applicability of the experimental findings (in terms of heathland management and critical load assessment) fertilisation effects on response variables were visualised by calculating the treatment ‘effect sizes’. The current year’s shoot increment of the dominant dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris proved to be the most sensitive indicator to N fertilisation. Shoot increment significantly responded to additions of ≥ 5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 already in the first year, whereas flower formation of Calluna vulgaris increased only in the high-N treatments. Similarly, tissue C:N ratios of vascular plants (Calluna vulgaris and the graminoids Carex arenaria and Festuca ovina agg.) only decreased in the highest N treatments (50 and 20 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively). In contrast, tissue C:N ratios of cryptogams responded more quickly and sensitively than vascular plants. For example, Cladonia spp. tissue C:N ratios responded to N additions ≥ 5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in the second study year. After three years we observed an increase in cover of graminoids and a corresponding decrease of cryptogams at N fertilisation rates of ≥ 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1. Soil C:N ratios proved to be an inappropriate indicator for N fertilisation at least within our three-year study period. Although current critical N loads for heathlands (10−20 kg N ha−1 yr−1) were confirmed in our experiment, the immediate and highly sensitive response of the current year’s shoots of Calluna vulgaris suggests that at least some ecosystem functions (e.g. dwarf shrub growth) also might respond to low (i.e. < 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1) but chronic inputs of N.  相似文献

Time series of values of ingenious parameters indicating ecosystem services from European beech and Norway spruce ecosystems at Solling, Germany, were evaluated with respect to resilient or adaptive behaviour. Studied indicators comprise the use of monitoring data with up to more than 40 years of observation on deposition of potential acidity, sulphate (SO42−) budgets, exchangeable base cation pools, Bc/Al ratio in soil solution, nitrogen (N) budgets, foliar nutrition as indicated by the foliar Bc/N ratio, and defoliation. Deposition of potential acidity decreased considerably at both ecosystems. SO42− budgets reveal retention of sulphur in the soils affecting acid/base budgets. Exchangeable base cation pools decreased at both ecosystems by about 60%. Bc/Al ratio in soil solution in the mineral soil was mostly below critical limits indicating potential toxic stress to tree roots. N retention in the soils decreased from about 40 kg ha−1 yr−1 in the 1970s to currently very low rates of 0–20 kg ha−1 yr−1 indicating increasing N saturation. Foliar Bc/N ratio decreased at the spruce ecosystem indicating possible nutrient imbalances. Defoliation at both Solling ecosystems is on a high level compared to other forests in Germany, but reveals no distinct relation to soil acidification or N saturation. From the selected indicators, SO42− and N budgets reveal resilient behaviour, whereas indicators related to the acid/base status tend to adaptive behaviour.  相似文献

The South Nation River Watershed, in eastern Ontario, Canada, is an agricultural watershed impacted by excess nutrient loading primarily from agricultural activities. A constructed wetland for the treatment of agricultural wastewater from a 150-cow dairy operation in this watershed was monitored in its eighth operating season to evaluate the proportion of total nitrogen (TN) (approximated by total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) due to low NO3) and total phosphorus (TP) removal that could be attributed to storage in Typha latifolia L. and Typha angustifolia L., which dominate this system. Nutrient loading rates were high, with 16.2 kg ha−1 d−1 N and 3.4 kg ha−1 d−1 P entering the wetland and loading the first wetland cell. Plant uptake accounted for 0.7% of TKN removal when the vegetated free water surface cells were considered together. However, separately, in the second wetland cell with lower N and P loading rates, plants accounted for 9% of TKN, 21% of NH4+ and 5% of TP removal. Plant uptake was significant to overall removal given wetland age and nutrient loading. Nutrient storage during the growing season at this constructed wetland helped reduce the nutrient load entering the watershed, already stressed by intensive local agriculture.  相似文献

Nitrate loss from drainage tiles across the cornbelt of the upper midwestern US is a result of intensive agriculture with limited crop diversity, extensive periods of fallow soil, and the need for high fertilizer applications to corn, all located on a hydrologically modified landscape. Two methods proposed to reduce tile nitrate export are managed or controlled drainage to limit tile flow and bioreactors to enhance denitrification. Nitrogen budgets and tile flow monitoring were conducted over two- to three-year periods between 2006 and 2009. We estimated N budgets in a seed corn-soybean rotation farming system near DeLand, east-central Illinois, USA, with free (FD) and controlled drainage (CD) patterned tile systems. In addition, wood chip filled trenches (bioreactors) were installed below the CD structures, one lined with plastic and one unlined. We measured daily tile flow and nitrate-N (NO3-N) concentrations and calculated cumulative N loss from the tile water at both FD and CD areas for a period of three cropping years. We also monitored the tile flow and nitrate concentration in inlet and outlet of the bioreactor associated with a CD system and evaluated the efficiency of the bioreactor for two cropping years. Most components of the N balance were unaffected by CD (yields and therefore N harvested, surface soil denitrification), and there was a negative N balance in the soybean cropping year (?165 and ?163 kg N ha?1 at FD and CD areas, respectively), whereas seed corn cropping in the following year resulted in positive N balances (29 and 34 kg N ha?1 at FD and CD areas, respectively). For two years, the overall N balances were ?136 and ?129 kg N ha?1 at FD and CD areas, respectively, consistent with other recent corn belt studies showing a small net depletion of soil organic N. Controlled drainage greatly reduced tile N export, with a three-year average loss of 57.2 kg N ha?1 yr?1 from FD compared to 17 kg N ha?1 yr?1 for CD. There was high uncertainty in denitrification measurements and thus the fate of missing N in the CD system remained unknown. Nitrate reduction efficiency of the bioreactor varied greatly, with periods where nearly 100% of the nitrate was denitrified. The overall efficiency of the bioreactor associated with the CD system in reducing the tile N load was 33%. When nitrate was non-limiting, the nitrate removal rate of the bioreactor was 6.4 g N m?3 d?1. Little N2O emission was found from the bioreactor bed and is not thought to be a problem with these systems. Both the tile bioreactor and controlled drainage greatly reduced tile nitrate export in this leaky seed corn and soybean agricultural field.  相似文献

Increasing economic growth and industrial development in China is starting to impact even remote areas such as the Shennongjia nature reserve, where nitrogen pollution is becoming a major environmental threat. The epiphytic lichen flora is particularly rich in this area and is one of the components of this habitat most sensitive to nitrogen pollution. Since lichens represent an important food resource for the endangered monkey species Rhinopithecus roxellana, a reduction in lichen availability would have harmful consequences for the conservation of its habitat in the Shennongjia Mountains. To investigate the effects of increased nitrogen availability on the local lichen communities, so far scarcely considered, we conducted a one-year field experiment measuring growth, survival, and phosphomonoesterase activity of the widespread species Usnea luridorufa in response to nitrogen (up to 50 kg N ha−1 year−1 deposition) and phosphorus supply. Growth and survival of thalli and propagules of U. luridorufa decreased when treated with N deposition >12.05 kg N ha−1 year−1 and >2.14 kg N ha−1 year−1, respectively. The important role of phosphorus availability in relation to nitrogen supply was demonstrated by the increase in phosphomonoesterase activity with increasing nitrogen availability until a nitrogen toxicity threshold was reached. However, the high concentration of phosphorus in rainwater showed that phosphorus is not a limiting nutrient in the area. The results make a contribution to the knowledge of the negative effects of increased N deposition in the Shennongjia forest ecosystem.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to quantify nutrient transport dynamics of a previously ungauged, temperate watershed (145 km2) surrounding a shallow eutrophic lake and discern lake response to external nutrient loading, based on soil water assessment tool (SWAT) and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) empirical lake models, respectively. A SWAT model was used to simulate baseline nutrient dynamics after its calibration and validation against daily tributary flow, total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), total phosphorus (TP), and nitrate (NO3) loads. On the watershed scale, median annual TDP, TP, and NO3 losses were 0.4, 1.1, and 2.0 kg ha 1, respectively. The highest median annual TP and NO3 losses were estimated at 3.7 and 7.7 kg ha 1 for pastureland and 1.7 and 3.8 kg ha 1 for cropland and mixed forests, respectively. Baseflow was the major nutrient transport pathway over a wide range of precipitation events (450 to 900 mm yr 1). Erosion was the predominant surface process exporting P across the watershed. Critical source areas (CSAs) of TP and NO3 comprised 17% and 4% of the watershed, respectively. Annual mean TP, and mean and maximum chlorophyll content indicated a hyper-eutrophication risk for the lake. An external P load reduction by excess of 80% could be necessary to restore mesotrophy in the lake. Our results suggested that subsurface P transport should not be overlooked a priori when groundwater-dependent and extensively farmed watersheds are managed for eutrophication abatement.  相似文献

Nutrient-use efficiency (NUE) within forests of the mangroves Rhizophora stylosa and Avicennia marina was estimated in arid Western Australia using litter fall rates and rates of leaf CO2 exchange. Litter fall rates ranged from 9.8 to 34.4 t DW ha−1 y−1 but equated to only 13–41% (mean = 30%) of net canopy primary production. Foliar N:P ratios were in most instances ≥16, suggesting P limitation. NUE for N based on litter fall rates were significantly less (NUEL = 167–322 g DW g−1 N) than those based on photosynthesis measurements (NUEP = 234–448 g DW g−1 N), suggesting that NUE estimates for nitrogen based on litter fall data are underestimates. NUEP estimates for N were significantly greater for R. stylosa than for A. marina. NUE for P were not significantly different, with NUEL ranging from 2905 to 5053 g DW g−1 P and NUEP ranging from 1632 to 4992 g DW g−1 P. Both sets of NUE are at the higher end of the range of estimates calculated for most other forests and equivalent to those for wet tropical mangroves. These arid-zone trees live in low-nutrient habitats, but it appears that selection on components of NUE (i.e. traits that reduce nutrient loss) rather than on NUE itself equates to a lack of clear patterns in NUE between different environments, emphasizing the flexible nature of nutrient allocation in woody plants. NUE in R. stylosa correlated inversely with mature leaf N and P content, implying that NUE in this species is maximized by the synthesis of low-nutrient leaves, i.e. a nutrient retention strategy, whereas such does not appear to be the case for A. marina. This strategy translates into a direct advantage in terms of net primary productivity for R. stylosa. This idea is supported by evidence of longer nutrient residence times for R. stylosa than for A. marina.  相似文献

The biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N) and base cations (BCs), (i.e., K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+), play critical roles in plant nutrition and ecosystem function. Empirical correlations between large experimental N fertilizer additions to forest ecosystems and increased BCs loss in stream water are well demonstrated, but the mechanisms driving this coupling remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that protons generated through N transformation (PPRN)—quantified as the balance of NH4+ (H+ source) and NO3 (H+ sink) in precipitation versus the stream output will impact BCs loss in acid-sensitive ecosystems. To test this hypothesis, we monitored precipitation input and stream export of inorganic N and BCs for three years in an acid-sensitive forested watershed in a granite area of subtropical China. We found the precipitation input of inorganic N (17.71 kg N ha−1 year−1 with 54% as NH4+–N) was considerably higher than stream exported inorganic N (5.99 kg N ha−1 year−1 with 83% as NO3–N), making the watershed a net N sink. The stream export of BCs (151, 1518, 851, and 252 mol ha−1 year−1 for K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, respectively) was positively correlated (r = 0.80, 0.90, 0.84, and 0.84 for K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ on a monthly scale, respectively, P < 0.001, n = 36) with PPRN (389 mol ha−1 year−1) over the three years, suggesting that PPRN drives loss of BCs in the acid-sensitive ecosystem. A global meta-analysis of 15 watershed studies from non-calcareous ecosystems further supports this hypothesis by showing a similarly strong correlation between ∑BCs output and PPRN (r = 0.89, P < 0.001, n = 15), in spite of the pronounced differences in environmental settings. Collectively, our results suggest that N transformations rather than anions (NO3 and/or SO42−) leaching specifically, are an important mediator of BCs loss in acid-senstive ecosystems. Our study provides the first definitive evidence that the chronic N deposition and subsequent transformation within the watershed drive stream export of BCs through proton production in acid-sensitive ecosystems, irrespective of their current relatively high N retention. Our findings suggest the N-transformation-based proton production can be used as an indicator of watershed outflow quality in the acid-sensitive ecosystems.  相似文献

Lichen bioindication can provide economical and spatially extensive monitoring of climate and pollution impacts on ecological communities. We used non-metric multidimensional scaling of lichen community composition and generalized additive models to analyze regional climate and pollution gradients in the northern Rocky Mountains, U.S. Temperature extremes, relative humidity, and N-deposition were strongly related to lichen community composition. Eutrophic species (genera Physcia, Xanthomendoza, and Xanthoria) were associated with high N deposition, low precipitation, and temperature extremes. Estimated N deposition in our study ranged from <0.5 to 4.26 kg N ha−1 year−1 with degradation to lichen communities observed at 4.0 kg N ha−1 year−1, the indicated critical load. The resulting model can track changes in climate and N pollution related to lichen communities over time, identify probable sensitive or impacted habitats, and provide key information for natural resource management and conservation. The approach is broadly applicable to temperate ecosystems worldwide.  相似文献

Proton (H+ ion) budgets were calculated for 17 forested sites in Europe using open field (bulk) and throughfall deposition and runoff or soil leachate data. Proton budgets integrate information about the complex chemical and biological processes that govern the generation or consumption of acidity in the ecosystem into a single parameter. The sites belong to the multidisciplinary ICP integrated monitoring network, set up to assess the environmental impacts of transboundary air pollution. Mean annual H+ budgets were estimated to quantify the relative importance of different biogeochemical processes, with special emphasis on the N deposition. N deposition exceeded S deposition on an equivalent basis at the studied sites. Model based estimates for quantifying the impact of agreed international emission reduction measures showed that the relative importance of N deposition still is likely to increase in the future. Base cation weathering and ion exchange were the main processes for proton consumption. Sites on base poor soil material showed low base cation fluxes, export of acidity and high external/internal H+ source ratios. At these sites the dissociation of organic acids was commonly a significant internal H+ source. Depending on deposition inputs, the importance of N processes on the H+ budget varied between −4.5 mequiv. m−2 a−1 (small H+ consumption) and 46.2 mequiv. m−2 a−1 (H+ production). A relationship between the deposition inputs and the H+ production from N transformations was also observed, with higher H+ production at higher deposition levels. Net release of sulphate (and associated H+ production) was observed at many sites, being consistent with observations from other recent European budget studies.  相似文献

The responses of soil-atmosphere carbon (C) exchange fluxes to growing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are controversial, leading to large uncertainty in the estimated C sink of global forest ecosystems experiencing substantial N inputs. However, it is challenging to quantify critical load of N input for the alteration of the soil C fluxes, and what factors controlled the changes in soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes under N enrichment. Nine levels of urea addition experiment (0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 kg N ha−1 yr−1) were conducted in the needle-broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountain, Northeast China. Soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes were monitored weekly using the static chamber and gas chromatograph technique. Environmental variables (soil temperature and moisture in the 0–10 cm depth) and dissolved N (NH4+-N, NO3-N, total dissolved N (TDN), and dissolved organic N (DON)) in the organic layer and the 0–10 cm mineral soil layer were simultaneously measured. High rates of N addition (≥60 kg N ha−1 yr−1) significantly increased soil NO3-N contents in the organic layer and the mineral layer by 120%-180% and 56.4%-84.6%, respectively. However, N application did not lead to a significant accumulation of soil NH4+-N contents in the two soil layers except for a few treatments. N addition at a low rate of 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1 significantly stimulated, whereas high rate of N addition (140 kg N ha−1 yr−1) significantly inhibited soil CO2 emission and CH4 uptake. Significant negative relationships were observed between changes in soil CO2 emission and CH4 uptake and changes in soil NO3-N and moisture contents under N enrichment. These results suggest that soil nitrification and NO3-N accumulation could be important regulators of soil CO2 emission and CH4 uptake in the temperate needle-broadleaved mixed forest. The nonlinear responses to exogenous N inputs and the critical level of N in terms of soil C fluxes should be considered in the ecological process models and ecosystem management.  相似文献

Research into utilization of monosodium glutamate industrial wastewater (MSGW) as a plant nutrient source was undertaken. The physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of MSGW were analyzed in detail. Effect of MSGW on early growth of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. cv. Pekinensis) and maize (Zea mays L. cv. Bright Jean) was tested by the seed germination bioassay. Subsequently, in a greenhouse pot experiment using the same plant species, effects of MSGW application rates on the plant biomass yield, nitrogen content and soil properties were analyzed. The MSGW was characterized by high levels of N (56.7 g l?1), organic C (344.6 g l?1), total solids (600 g l?1) and other minerals. At MSGW concentrations below 1%, germination indices for both the plant species were significantly (p < 0.01) higher than the control. Further, the greenhouse study results indicated significant increase in the plant biomass yield at MSGW application rates of 5000 and 7500 l ha?1. As the MSGW dose increased, the biomass yield decreased, decreasing the N-use efficiency. Maize showed significantly higher wastewater N-use efficiency compared to the Chinese cabbage. Although the total culturable bacterial and fungal counts in the raw MSGW were low, addition of MSGW to the soil increased the soil microbial activities and soil respiration. Soil organic C was also increased by the addition of MSGW, due to the presence of significant amounts of organic C in the wastewater. This preliminary study demonstrates that by proper management of the pH and optimization of application rate, MSGW can be utilized as a nutrient source for plant growth. Further long-term field studies to evaluate the environmental impact of MSGW usage in agriculture are being designed to reduce the environmental risks associated with the reuse of this underutilized wastewater in the agriculture.  相似文献

The intensification of agricultural land use and urbanisation has increased nutrient loads in aquatic ecosystems. Nitrogen loads can alter ecosystem structure and functioning, resulting in increased algal productivity, algal blooms and eutrophication. The principal aim of the present paper is to extend the use of epilithic δ15N signatures to a lake ecosystem in order to evaluate the potential impact of anthropogenic nitrogen discharges (organic and inorganic) that can also reach coastal waters.Epilithic associations were collected from volcanic rocks in different seasons in shallow water along the entire perimeter of Lake Bracciano and analysed for their nitrogen stable isotope signatures. Furthermore, some stones were moved from an unpolluted site to a polluted one in order to verify the effect on the nitrogen signature of the epilithic association. The epilithon’s δ15N signatures provided strong evidence of the space-time variability of N inputs. The differing quality of nitrogen loads was reflected in high isotopic variation within the lake, especially at the beginning of summer (1.7‰  δ15N  13.3‰), while in winter, when anthropogenic pressure was lowest, the δ15N signature variation was less accentuated (3.1‰  δ15N  7.6‰). At all sampling times, spatial variability was found to be related to the various human activities along the lake shore (especially tourism and agriculture), while seasonal variation at all sampling sites was related to the intensity of anthropogenic pressures (higher in summer and lower in winter). Our results showed that epilithic algal associations and the physicochemical properties of the water did not influence the δ15N signature, which in contrast was strongly related to the site-specific effect of human activities around the lake. Thus, the distribution of δ15N across space and time can be used to direct nutrient reduction strategies in the region and can assist in monitoring the effectiveness of environmental protection measures.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to identify nutrient impacts, if any, on stream periphyton growth in Black Bear Creek (north central Oklahoma) and its tributaries. Passive diffusion periphytometers were deployed at ten study sites within the Black Bear Creek basin to evaluate periphyton growth in response to nutrient enrichment. These sites were selected to represent a gradient of land uses, from predominantly agricultural to predominantly urban. Periphytometer treatments included phosphorus (P) (1.0 mg/L PO4-P, n = 10), nitrogen (N) (10.0 mg/L NO3-N, n = 10), N plus P (n = 10) and control (reverse osmosis-treated water, n = 10). Results indicated that average dissolved inorganic N (DIN, PQL = 0.04 mg/L) concentrations were significantly correlated (R2 = 0.63, p < 0.01) with chlorophyll a production on the periphytometer control treatments in the Black Bear Creek basin. Periphytic growth was nutrient-limited (increased chlorophyll a was measured on nutrient-enriched growth media) at four of the ten sites sampled; two sites were limited by N and two sites were co-limited by both N and P. The lotic ecosystem trophic status index (LETSI), the ratio of C to N + P chlorophyll a, was calculated to compare treatment responses across sites. At nutrient-limited sites, LETSI was positively correlated to ambient DIN values (R2 = 0.97, p < 0.01). However, some sites that were not nutrient-limited had ambient nutrient concentrations similar to sites with observed nutrient limitation, indicating other factors were limiting periphyton growth at those sites.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) use in European agriculture is not efficient, with less than one third of available N recovered in intended outputs. Over two thirds of N is lost to the environment, where it has negative ecological, social and economic consequences. Improving N efficiency in crop and animal production is a priority to reduce its detrimental effects while maintaining food production. The territory scale is particularly suitable for evaluation of N efficiency because it is used for environmental impact assessment and public policies. However, N Use Efficiency (NUE), the efficiency indicator available at this scale, has several limitations: (i) inputs and outputs can vary depending on the boundaries and definitions used, (ii) input production and transport are not always included, and (iii) changes in soil N stock are rarely considered. Three indicators were recently developed at the farming system scale to overcome NUE limitations. System N efficiency (SyNE) expresses N in intended outputs as a function of all major N inputs and losses. Relative N efficiency (RNE) expresses N efficiency relatively to its potential given the nature of productions. System N balance (SyNB) expresses N losses from cradle to the gate of the farm. All three indicators include N losses due to the production and transport of inputs and soil N stock variations. The current study tested these indicators at the national scale to provide a better understanding of N management in 27 European countries. The study demonstrates the feasibility and utility of calculating these indicators at the national scale. The mean NUE of European countries is 0.35, while their mean SyNE is 0.23, highlighting the importance of considering soil N loss in efficiency indicators. Average SyNB is 113 kgN ha−1 AA, but varies from 31 to 432 kgN ha−1 AA, showing the large margin of progress of some countries regarding N losses. Mean RNE is 0.43, which means that European countries could maintain their production with much less N inputs. The systems approach enables relevant comparisons among countries with different production methods and intensities. Combining SyNE and SyNB provides complementary information about the agricultural use of N resources and the resulting environmental pressure. RNE assesses the progress margin of each country based on its production and enriches the efficiency analysis by considering the nature of agricultural products. These indicators are promising tools to study, compare and improve the N efficiency of territories or countries.  相似文献

Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay poses significant challenges because of increasing population pressure, conversion of farmland to urban/suburban development, and the expense of infrastructure needed to achieve significant and sustained nutrient reductions from agricultural and urban sources. One radical approach for removing non-point source nutrients before they reach the bay is to deploy large-scale algal turf scrubbers along its tributaries. The objective of this study was to determine rates of nutrient removal and algal fatty acid production using small ATS units located along three Chesapeake Bay rivers. Small-scale ATS units (each containing 1 m2 growing area) were operated for 5–10 months from April 2007 to April 2008 on three western shore tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland: the Bush River, the Patapsco River and the Patuxent River. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal rates at the Patuxent site fluctuated considerably but averaged 250 mg TN, 45 mg TP m?2 day?1 from May to October 2007, then decreased to 16 mg TN, 3 mg TP m?2 day?1 from December 2007 to February 2008. Nutrient removal rates at the Bush river site also fluctuated but averaged only 85 mg TN, 10 mg TP m?2 day?1 from May to June 2007, before decreasing to <10 mg TN, <1 mg TP m?2 day?1 from July to September 2007. The Patapsco River unit began operation in August 2007, reached its maximum removal values of 150 mg TN, 18 mg TP m?2 day?1 from mid-October to late-November 2007, then decreased to values of 45 mg TN, 4 mg TP m?2 day?1 from November 15, 2007 to mid-April 2008. In the best case (Patuxent site from May to October 2007), daily removal rates of 250 mg N and 45 mg P m?2 are equivalent to removal rates of 380 kg N and 70 kg P ha?1 over a 150-day season in Maryland. Fatty acid (FA) content of the harvested material was consistently low (0.3–0.6% of dry weight) and varied little between sites. Mean algal FA production rates (23–54 mg FA m?2 day?1) are equivalent to rates of 34–81 kg FA ha?1 year?1 based on a 150-day operational season in Maryland.  相似文献

There is a worldwide growing awareness of the negative impacts of the increasing fossil fuel reliance and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture, in particular for intensive crop systems. We analyze the energy balances and greenhouse gas emissions from export-oriented avocado orchards in Mexico. Avocado is a very important export crop and one of the main drivers of land-use change in the country. We compared 12 avocado orchards under organic and conventional management during two production cycles (2010 and 2011) in a representative region of Central Mexico. Our analysis shows no significant differences in energy consumption and GHG emissions between organic and conventional systems with 55 and 56 GJ ha−1, and 3.30 t CO2 equiv. ha−1 and 3.57 t CO2 equiv. ha−1, respectively.Organic systems show three times more use of renewable energy than their conventional counterparts. However both systems depend heavily on fossil fuel inputs, machinery and N-fertilizers (synthetic or organic). Also, there is a high heterogeneity in management practices and input application within both systems, which is reflected in a large variation of their energy-related parameters. Given that avocado production is rapidly expanding in Mexico, a move toward organic production without systematically changing toward less fossil fuel dependent agricultural practices would not be sufficient to ensure a sustainable production.  相似文献

Trees are recognized as a carbon reservoir, and precise and convenient methods for forest biomass estimation are required for adequate carbon management. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is considered to be one of the solutions for large-scale forest biomass evaluation. To clarify the relationship between mean canopy height determined by airborne LiDAR and forest timber volume and biomass of cool-temperate forests in northern Hokkaido, Japan, we conducted LiDAR observations covering the total area of the Teshio Experimental Forest (225 km2) of Hokkaido University and compared the results with ground surveys and previous studies. Timber volume and aboveground tree carbon content of the studied forest stands ranged from 101.43 to 480.40 m3 ha–1 and from 30.78 to 180.54 MgC ha–1, respectively. The LiDAR mean canopy height explained the variation among stands well (volume: r2 = 0.80, RMSE = 55.04 m3 ha–1; aboveground tree carbon content: r2 = 0.78, RMSE = 19.10 MgC ha–1) when one simple linear regression equation was used for all types (hardwood, coniferous, and mixed) of forest stands. The determination of a regression equation for each forest type did not improve the prediction power for hardwood (volume: r2 = 0.84, RMSE = 62.66 m3 ha–1; aboveground tree carbon content: r2 = 0.76, RMSE = 27.05 MgC ha–1) or coniferous forests (volume: r2 = 0.75, RMSE = 51.07 m3 ha–1; aboveground tree carbon content: r2 = 0.58, RMSE = 19.00 MgC ha–1). Thus, the combined regression equation that includes three forest types appears to be adequate for practical application to large-scale forest biomass estimation.  相似文献

The effect of nutrient addition on the growth of E. najas was evaluated in a dose response experiment using sand amended with phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), and in enrichment trials with N and P amendments to natural sediments. Plants, water and sediment came from lagoons of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain and from Itaipu Reservoir (Brazil). Relative growth rates (RGRs) of E. najas shoots, based on dry mass (DM), varied from 0.03 to 0.060 d−1 for both nutrients. Root:shoot biomass ratios were related to sediment exchangeable P (r = −0.419; P = 0.03) and N (r = −0.54; P = 0.006), however root RGR was not related to sediment nutrient concentrations. When natural sediments were amended with N and P, neither shoot nor root RGRs differed among treatments for substrata from either the reservoir or the floodplain lagoons (P > 0.05). Comparison of nutrient concentrations measured in natural sediments collected from several sites in both the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (range 49–213 μg P g−1 DM; 36–373 μg N g−1 DM) and Itaipu Reservoir (range 43–402 μg P g−1 DM; 7.9–238 μg N g−1 DM) showed that sediment N and P from these systems usually exceeded minimum requirements necessary for E. najas growth, as measured in the dose response experiment. Together, these results indicate that E. najas, at least in early stages of development, responds to sediment nutrient amendments and relies upon bottom sediments to meet its N and P requirements and that for at least two Brazilian ecosystems, growth of this species is not limited by insufficient sediment N or P. Thus, reducing N and P in water is not enough to control E. najas growth in short time periods in these ecosystems.  相似文献

Species-based ecological indices, such as Ellenberg indicators, reflect plant habitat preferences and can be used to describe local environment conditions. One disadvantage of using vegetation data as a substitute for environmental data is the fact that extensive floristic sampling can usually only be carried out at a plot scale within limited geographical areas. Remotely sensed data have the potential to provide information on fine-scale vegetation properties over large areas. In the present study, we examine whether airborne hyperspectral remote sensing can be used to predict Ellenberg nutrient (N) and moisture (M) values in plots in dry grazed grasslands within a local agricultural landscape in southern Sweden. We compare the prediction accuracy of three categories of model: (I) models based on predefined vegetation indices (VIs), (II) models based on waveband-selected VIs, and (III) models based on the full set of hyperspectral wavebands. We also identify the optimal combination of wavebands for the prediction of Ellenberg values. The floristic composition of 104 (4 m × 4 m grassland) plots on the Baltic island of Öland was surveyed in the field, and the vascular plant species recorded in the plots were assigned Ellenberg indicator values for N and M. A community-weighted mean value was calculated for N (mN) and M (mM) within each plot. Hyperspectral data were extracted from an 8 m × 8 m pixel window centred on each plot. The relationship between field-observed and predicted mean Ellenberg values was significant for all three categories of prediction models. The performance of the category II and III models was comparable, and they gave lower prediction errors and higher R2 values than the category I models for both mN and mM. Visible and near-infrared wavebands were important for the prediction of both mN and mM, and shortwave infrared wavebands were also important for the prediction of mM. We conclude that airborne hyperspectral remote sensing can detect spectral differences in vegetation between grassland plots characterised by different mean Ellenberg N and M values, and that remote sensing technology can potentially be used to survey fine-scale variation in environmental conditions within a local agricultural landscape.  相似文献
