Temperature and precipitation have been identified as factors that potentially influence eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) reproduction, but robust analyses testing the relationship between weather parameters and turkey nest success are lacking. Therefore, we assessed how weather influenced turkey daily nest survival using 8 years of data collected from 715 nests across the southeastern United States. We also conducted exploratory analyses investigating if weather conditions during or prior to nesting best predicted nest success. We then assessed the possible implications of climate change through 2041–2060 for future eastern wild turkey daily nest survival and nest success for variables determined significant in analyses. During incubation, positive anomalies of minimum daily temperature were associated with greater daily nest survival. Precipitation during nesting was not a good predictor of daily nest survival. Exploratory analyses unexpectedly indicated that weather conditions in January prior to incubation were more important to nest success than weather conditions during incubation. In January, negative anomalies of minimum temperature and greater average daily precipitation were associated with greater nest success. Projections of future nest success or daily nest survival based on these relationships with the predictive covariates, and informed by climate models, suggest that nest success may increase as January precipitation increases and that daily nest survival may increase as temperature during incubation increases. These positive associations could be offset by a negative association between nest success and the expected increases in January minimum average temperature. Additional research is needed to investigate causes of these relationships and assess the implications of climate change for eastern wild turkey poult survival.  相似文献

Brood raiding, or reciprocal stealing of brood, is common amongincipient colonies of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta. Paradoxically,workers from a colony that loses its brood during a raid oftenabandon their nest and join the winning colony. Queens abandonedby their workers may then migrate from their original nest siteand attempt to forcefully usurp another incipient colony bydisplacing that colony's queen or queens. This study examinedfactors that influence the success of usurpation attempts. Queensattempting to usurp a nearby colony after laboratory brood raidswere successful in less than 30% of trials. Usurpation attemptswere more successful if workers familiar to the migrating queenwere present in the nest, as would happen if a queen were tofind the colony to which her workers had moved. Cross-fosteringexperiments showed that this effect was due to familiarity ratherthan relatedness. Usurpation attempts were less successful ifthey were delayed by 16 h. The probability of usurpation successwas not reduced by doubling the number of defending workersin the invaded colony. However, colonies founded by three queenswere almost always able to resist usurpation attempts. Theseresults support the hypothesis that workers abandon their natalcolony after losing a brood raid to increase the likelihoodthat their queen can usurp the colony to which they migrate.These results also provide the first evidence that coloniesof ants founded by several queens are better able to resistusurpation attempts than colonies founded by a single queen  相似文献

Honey bee workers maintain the brood nest of their colony within a narrow temperature range of 34.5±1.5°C, implying that there are significant fitness costs if brood is reared outside the normal range. However, the effects of abnormal incubation temperatures are subtle and not well documented. Here we show that short-term learning and memory abilities of adult workers are affected by the temperature they experienced during pupal development. In contrast, long-term learning and memory is not significantly affected by rearing temperature. Furthermore, we could detect no effects of incubation temperature on fluctuating asymmetry, as a measure of developmental stability, in workers, queens or drones. We conclude that the most important consequence of abnormal rearing temperatures are subtle neural deficiencies affecting short-term memory rather than physical abnormalities.  相似文献

During colony growth, leaf-cutting ants enlarge their nests by excavating tunnels and chambers housing their fungus gardens and brood. Workers are expected to excavate new nest chambers at locations across the soil profile that offer suitable environmental conditions for brood and fungus rearing. It is an open question whether new chambers are excavated in advance, or will emerge around brood or fungus initially relocated to a suitable site in a previously-excavated tunnel. In the laboratory, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the excavation of new nest chambers in the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex lundi. Specifically, we asked whether workers relocate brood and fungus to suitable nest locations, and to what extent the relocated items trigger the excavation of a nest chamber and influence its shape. When brood and fungus were exposed to unfavorable environmental conditions, either low temperatures or low humidity, both were relocated, but ants clearly preferred to relocate the brood first. Workers relocated fungus to places containing brood, demonstrating that subsequent fungus relocation spatially follows the brood deposition. In addition, more ants aggregated at sites containing brood. When presented with a choice between two otherwise identical digging sites, but one containing brood, ants'' excavation activity was higher at this site, and the shape of the excavated cavity was more rounded and chamber-like. The presence of fungus also led to the excavation of rounder shapes, with higher excavation activity at the site that also contained brood. We argue that during colony growth, workers preferentially relocate brood to suitable locations along a tunnel, and that relocated brood spatially guides fungus relocation and leads to increased digging activity around them. We suggest that nest chambers are not excavated in advance, but emerge through a self-organized process resulting from the aggregation of workers and their density-dependent digging behavior around the relocated brood and fungus.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchy in the primitively eusocial wasp Polistes japonicus was analysed in four colonies for two periods: (1) the first-brood period, when only early emerging workers are present on the nest, and (2) the mixed-brood period, when the first and second (last) broods are present on the nest. The rank in the dominance hierarchy was determined based on a sociogram showing a dominance–subordinance relationship for all pairs of workers. During the first-brood period, older workers were likely to be more dominant (older dominance hierarchy), while the rank of workers was reversed during the mixed-brood period, with younger workers being likely to be more dominant (younger dominance hierarchy). However, the oldest and youngest workers were not always the top-ranked workers in the dominance hierarchy during the first- and mixed-brood periods, respectively, and during the mixed-brood period no younger dominance hierarchy was evident when the first or second brood was analysed separately. Higher ranked workers displayed dominance behaviour more frequently, and the lowest ranked worker hardly displayed dominance behaviour. Most workers displayed dominance behaviours primarily towards the worker ranked immediately below in the dominance hierarchy during the mixed-brood period but not during the first-brood period. The bodies of younger workers were larger for the mixed brood, but not for the first brood in some colonies or the second brood in all colonies. The association between body size and rank in the dominance hierarchy was negative during the first-brood period and positive during the mixed-brood period, with a nearly significant trend also seen even when the analysis was limited to the second brood. To explain the above temporal change from an older dominance hierarchy to a younger dominance hierarchy, we propose the hypothesis that the probability of a worker inheriting the colony increases rapidly with colony development, and consequently younger larger workers attempt to move up the dominance hierarchy in order to produce their own offspring by becoming the superseder late in colony development, rather than working harmoniously so as to boost the overall production of reproductive progeny for a colony, which is the strategy adopted early in colony development.  相似文献

Summary 1) When a thermal gradient (20–40° C) was established along a laboratory nest, Camponotus mus nurse workers showed a photoperiodic circadian rhythm of temperature preferences for brood rearing. Two different temperatures were daily selected to translocate the brood, i.e. 30.8° C selected at the middle of the photophase, and 27.5° C selected during the scotophase, 8 h later. 2) The daily temperature response of nurse workers consisted of paired high and low-temperature translocations, with a 8 hs-interval in between: high-temperature translocation was shown to be entrained by the photophase length, whereas low-temperature translocation was shown to be dependent on the precedent one. 3) Prey deprivation to the colony modified the brood transport behaviors resulting in translocations of only cocoons and large (ripe) larvae, stages in which the pupation processes are triggered. Small larvae and eggs remained located at 27.5° C. 4) Evaluation of pupa developmental time as well as percentage of pupa mortality at different temperature regimes allowed to construct an efficiency index relating pupa survival and cocoon developmental time. In the range of temperatures selected by nurses, the index reached its maximal values. 5) The ecological significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Population and colony-level sex allocation and nest productivity in the eusocial sweat bee Halictus ligatus Say were studied by excavating nests during one season. The emphasis was on measuring the provision masses, which differ in size and shape depending on the sex of the egg to be laid on them (male-producing provision masses are smaller and more or less round, whereas gyne-producing provision masses are larger and 'loaf-shaped). The primary aim of this study was to test theoretical predictions about female-bias of the sex ratio in the summer brood, both on the population level and on the colony level.
The overall sex ratio of the summer brood was moderately biased towards gynes. A significant positive correlation between the overall size of provision masses (as an estimate for the degree of female bias of the nest sex ratio) and the number of eusocial workers was found. This relationship further improved in partial analyses in which the provision mass weights were adjusted for sampling date, removing the effect of protandry. Foundress size, however, had no effect on the second brood provision masses and neither was there an effect of worker number on the size of gynes and males separately. In the first brood only the size of the foundress had a consistently positive effect on the size of the provision masses and on the size of the emerging daughter workers.
The observed increase of female bias in the nest sex ratio with increasing numbers of eusocial worker bees conforms to optimization predictions following from kin-selection theory.  相似文献

Previous work with the antCamponotus floridanus demonstrated that perception of competition can be clearly differentiated from effects of mortality and decreased resources. That is, brood biomass in ant colonies decreases as a consequence of a behavioral decision(s) rather than because of limited food availability or reduced numbers of brood tenders. The experiments presented here extend that work. Under experimental conditions, colony growth inC. floridanus is modified by distance between brood and unrelated conspecifics and by worker age distribution. When nonnestmates are encountered at the nest versus at a separate foraging site, less brood is maintained by a colony. Although colonies with older workers maintain a brood biomass similar to that of colonies with younger workers, that biomass is concentrated in fewer, larger, more rapidly maturing larvae. These effects seem to be due entirely to worker control.  相似文献

Summary: In the present work, we present the results of a study on the seasonal and daily activity, as well as on the raid process in Rossomyrmex minuchae. A comparative study of the annual and daily activity of the host species, Proformica longiseta, has also been made in parasitized and non-parasitized colonies. R. minuchae is an obligate slave-maker, in which the annual activity is strongly related to abiotic conditions, especially temperature and moisture of the soil. The raid process is comprised of three phases: scouting, assault of the host nest and robbing of the host brood. Recruitment of nestmates by mean of adult transport, concentration close to and invasion of the host nest, are the three tasks carried out by R. minuchae workers during the assault phase. Major differences between Rossomyrmex and Polyergus (the other obligate dulotic genus of the tribe Formicini) in terms of behaviour, both in nestmate recruitment and in the host-nest invasion, reflect different parasitic strategies in the two genera, supporting the assignment of these two genera to different phylogenetic groups.  相似文献

Terrestrial organisms need to limit evaporation from their bodies in order to maintain a homeostatic water balance. Owing to a large surface to volume ratio, arthropods are particularly susceptible to desiccation and have evolved behavioural and physiological mechanisms to conserve water. In social insects, water balance is also affected by the interactions between nestmates and by the architecture of the nest. For honeybees, humidity is particularly important for the brood because it affects the hatching success of eggs and because, unlike ants, honeybees cannot relocate their brood to parts of the nest with more favourable humidity. To advance the understanding of the water economy in honeybee nests, we investigated whether workers exhibit a hygropreference when exposed to a gradient of 24-90% relative humidity (RH) and whether the expression of this preference and their behaviour is affected by the presence of brood. The results show that young honeybee workers in the absence of brood exhibit a weak hygropreference for approximately 75% RH. When brood is present the expression of this preference is further weakened, suggesting that workers tend to the brood by distributing evenly in the gradient. In addition, fanning behaviour is shown to be triggered by an increase in humidity above the preferred level but not by a decrease. Our results suggest that humidity in honeybee colonies is actively controlled by workers.  相似文献

Honeybee larvae and pupae are extremely stenothermic, i.e. they strongly depend on accurate regulation of brood nest temperature for proper development (33–36°C). Here we study the mechanisms of social thermoregulation of honeybee colonies under changing environmental temperatures concerning the contribution of individuals to colony temperature homeostasis. Beside migration activity within the nest, the main active process is “endothermy on demand” of adults. An increase of cold stress (cooling of the colony) increases the intensity of heat production with thoracic flight muscles and the number of endothermic individuals, especially in the brood nest. As endothermy means hard work for bees, this eases much burden of nestmates which can stay ectothermic. Concerning the active reaction to cold stress by endothermy, age polyethism is reduced to only two physiologically predetermined task divisions, 0 to ∼2 days and older. Endothermic heat production is the job of bees older than about two days. They are all similarly engaged in active heat production both in intensity and frequency. Their active heat production has an important reinforcement effect on passive heat production of the many ectothermic bees and of the brood. Ectothermy is most frequent in young bees (<∼2 days) both outside and inside of brood nest cells. We suggest young bees visit warm brood nest cells not only to clean them but also to speed up flight muscle development for proper endothermy and foraging later in their life. Young bees inside brood nest cells mostly receive heat from the surrounding cell wall during cold stress, whereas older bees predominantly transfer heat from the thorax to the cell wall. Endothermic bees regulate brood comb temperature more accurately than local air temperature. They apply the heat as close to the brood as possible: workers heating cells from within have a higher probability of endothermy than those on the comb surface. The findings show that thermal homeostasis of honeybee colonies is achieved by a combination of active and passive processes. The differential individual endothermic and behavioral reactions sum up to an integrated action of the honeybee colony as a superorganism.  相似文献

Summary This investigation compares the energy budgets of three species of Pogonomyrmex harvester ants along an altitudinal transect in southern California. All three demonstrate similar seasonal patterns, with high foraging activity and high respiratory costs in mid-summer and little or no activity during winter. Respiration, predominantely metabolism of the workers, was estimated to account for 84–92% of the energy assimilated by the nests. The remaining 8–16% of the energy was invested in the production of new individuals. However, total production was not correlated with food input. It is suggested that worker care of the brood may be the most important determinant of brood production, and thus food may not be a direct limiting resource in harvester ants.A higher percentage of production is invested in workers than in reproductives in all three species. The species usually partition similar proportions of energy between the production of males and females, but since females are larger, more males are produced. Although the species are in different habitats and have very different numbers of workers per nest, the numbers of sexuals produced per nest are similar. The sex-ratio appears to be ecologically determined. Nests that were provided with additional food invested more energy in the production of males. Control nests, nests which had food removed and older nests invested more in the production of females or invested equally in the production of the two sexes.  相似文献

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are able to regulate the brood nest temperatures within a narrow range between 32 and 36°C. Yet this small variation in brood temperature is sufficient to cause significant differences in the behavior of adult bees. To study the consequences of variation in pupal developmental temperature we raised honeybee brood under controlled temperature conditions (32, 34.5, 36°C) and individually marked more than 4,400 bees, after emergence. We analyzed dancing, undertaking behavior, the age of first foraging flight, and forager task specialization of these workers. Animals raised under higher temperatures showed an increased probability to dance, foraged earlier in life, and were more often engaged in undertaking. Since the temperature profile in the brood nest may be an emergent property of the whole colony, we discuss how pupal developmental temperature can affect the overall organization of division of labor among the individuals in a self-organized process.  相似文献

The von Bertalanffy rule (1960) predicts that low incubation temperature during larval development will result in larger adult body size. If larval development in social insects followed this rule, then low incubation temperature would induce the development of larger workers and possibly even sexuals. To test this prediction, the effect of incubation temperature on larval development, larval meal size, larval tending and worker recruitment to food in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta was investigated. Temperatures tested where within the range at which brood remains viable.Contrary to the predictions of the von Bertalanffy rule, worker size was unaffected by incubation temperature, and sexuals were reared at the high rather than the low incubation temperature. Moreover, larval meal size, the rate of larval tending by workers and the total number of workers recruited to food were unaffected by temperature.Mechanisms regulating developmental and behavioral homeostasis were as follows: the duration of larval development and the rate of larval growth changed proportionately with temperature such that the mean and variation of pupal size was unaffected by incubation temperature. Larvae solicited at the same rate, swallowed at the same rate and swallowed for the same duration such that meal size was unaffected by incubation temperature. On the brood pile, fewer workers tended brood at higher incubation temperatures, but worker tempo increased; as a result, brood tending was not adversely affected by incubation temperature. The rate of worker recruitment to food sites outside the nest increased with temperature, but the duration of the recruitment effort decreased such that, over time, the same total number of workers was employed to retrieve food.Incubation humidity was also investigated. When brood chambers were less than 100% humid, workers recruited to food and tended larvae (retrieved, sorted and groomed them), but did not feed larvae. We examined the hypotheses that the empty combs of Polybia occidentalis Olivier (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) nest insulate the inside of the nest. To examine this hypotheses, two kinds of temperature measurements were carried out: 1) with the outer comb of the nest intact (Control) and 2) removed (Treatment), using a large and a small nest. In the large nest, the daily nest temperatures (outer part, Tn1; inner part, Tn2) in Control were lower by 0.6 degrees C (Tn1) and 1.2 degrees C (Tn2) than those in Treatment, because of a higher ambient temperature (Ta) throughout temperature assessment in Treatment. However, the excess temperature (Tn - Ta) in Control was higher than that in Treatment. The value was higher by 0.7 degrees C at Tn1 and 0.1 degrees C at Tn2. In the small nest, the excess temperature in outer part was similar between experiments, while that in inner part of Control was lower than that of Treatment. The temperature fluctuation in the nests was lower in the Control than that in Treatment both the outer and inner part of the comb. We conclude that the unused comb is ecologically invaluable for raising and protecting the brood from extreme changes in ambient temperature during the winter period, because it helps not only keeping a higher nest temperature but also decreasing the temperature fluctuation around the brood combs. In addition, such a high temperature may influence the performance of adult wasps.  相似文献

Abstract. Along a stable temperature gradient and under a LD 12:12 h cycle, nurse workers of the ant Camponotus mus Roger 1863 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) select for the brood two different temperatures daily: 30.8°C at the middle of the light period (circadian phase = 90°), and 27.5°C 8 h later, during the dark period (circadian phase = 210°), this rhythm being of endogenous nature.When a 24 h temperature cycle was superimposed along the thermal gradient, so that the immobile brood experienced a temperature transition as they receive when translocated by nurses (8 h at 30.8°C and 16 h at 27.5°C), no brood translocations occurred.The thermal cycle masked the rhythm of brood translocation when temperature fitted the daily pattern expected by nurses.When the same temperature cycle was presented with a phase-advance, nurses did not tolerate the early thermal increase and removed the brood as temperature rose.However, when workers experienced this new phase relationship between light and temperature cycles for more than 10 days, brood translocations were suppressed.Records under constant conditions of light and temperature indicated that the overt rhythm was locked-on to the expected early increase in temperature, so that the temperature cycle dominated over the LD cycle in resetting brood-carrying activity.  相似文献

1. The vertical distribution in the nest of chambers, workers, callow workers, brood and seeds was studied in the harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex badius, in northern Florida. On each of four sample dates (May, July, October, January), six to seven colonies, chosen to represent the full range of sizes, were excavated. All chamber contents were collected and counted. Chambers were mapped and measured. In a preliminary study, two nests were excavated after preventing vertical migration by driving barriers into the wall of a pit next to the nest, severing the vertical tunnels. The vertical distribution of these barrier-nests differed little from unrestrained nests, indicating that unrestrained excavation produced a reasonable picture of vertical distributions. 2. Nest depth, chamber number and total area increased with colony size. Chamber area declined sharply with depth, as did chamber number, such that more than half of the total area was found in the upper quarter of the nest. 3. The proportion of dark-coloured (older) workers also declined strongly with depth, but this decline was weaker in the spring, and depended to a modest degree on colony size. Conversely, in the distribution of callow (young) workers, the proportion increased towards the bottom of the nest. Mean worker age was inversely related to the depth at which workers were found. The proportion of the brood also increased towards the bottom of the nest, with worker brood, sexual brood, pupae and larvae all being distributed similarly. 4. By contrast, seeds were stored at a preferred absolute depth between 40 and 100 cm. Colonies shallower than 100 cm stored seeds in their deepest chambers. Larger colonies stored most seeds in the upper third of the nest, but patterns were somewhat erratic because chambers were either filled completely with seeds or were empty. 5. Because chamber area decreased sharply with depth, the densities (individuals cm–2) of all colony members, including dark workers, were lowest near the surface and highest in the deepest parts of the nest. Here, worker densities ranged from 2 to 8 cm–2, and brood from 2 to 25 cm–2. 6. The regularity of the patterns of distribution suggests that harvester ant colonies have considerable spatial and temporal structure, which serves or is the outcome of important colony processes. A simple mechanism that could generate several of these patterns is discussed. New workers produced deep in the nest move upwards as they age. As they leave the brood zone they change from brood care to general nest duties, including increased nest excavation, leading to the top-heavy pattern of nest area. As they appear at the surface, they change to guarding and foraging. Thus, age polyethism may be partly the result of this upward migration of workers.  相似文献

An attempt was made to describe the principle signals involved in the recognition of nymphs by Tapinoma workers. A behavioural measure, the way and extent to which workers transported different objects presented to them, was used to quantify this relationship. These objects were homo- or heterospecific nymphs, or different baits. Two types of test were generally used in such studies: retrieval — bringing back objects to the nest, and removal – transport of objects during displacement of the nest. The second type of test was used in this study. The results, in decreasing order of recognition were as follows. Tapinoma workers transport homospecific and Tetramorium nymphs at 100%. The smaller nymphs of Solenopsis impregnated with Tapinoma extract were transported at 77%. The nymphs of Solenopsis with their own odour were transported at 21%, paper impregnated. with Tapinoma extract at 12%, while ‘odourless’ Tapinoma nymphs and neutral paper were not transported at all. These results imply an intervention of both physical and chemical factors, the threshold significance of signals and their global implication depending on the test situation and its disturbing effect. They also depend on the nature of the different objects presented in combination; Tapinoma workers transport heterospecific brood much less readily in the presence of their own brood. The attractiveness of nymphs is not an all or none phenomenon. In a study of the adoption of homospecific nymphs from another nest, this gradation was apparent in the distribution of nymphs in the nest and their order of transport during removal tests; certain nymphs were left aside in the first 3 days of presentation, were amongst the last to be transported during removal, and then by the most active workers.The perception of the brood by the workers may thus occur at different levels: (1) Perception of a factor that may be vaguely defined as ‘transportable object’ in a removal test — with objects of type ‘nymph’ for example; (2) perception of the species; (3) perception of the colony. The worker ant during its life acquires a certain ‘knowledge’ of its own brood through familiarization, which expresses itself in terms of specific patterns of care for the brood, but this attention, although given preferentially to the brood, is not exclusive under stress.  相似文献

Japanese aucha perch males taking care of eggs and fry are often brood-parasitized by a Japanese minnow. When the minnows are ovipositing in the perch nests, some of the perch eggs in the nests are often eaten by other fishes. The minnows’ eggs are subsequently guarded by the perch males until hatching. Countertactics of the perch against such brood parasitism were examined in a river of western Japan. Perch males did not employ any countertactics such as ejection of parasites’ eggs or nest desertion. On the other hand, perch females avoided spawning in nests with greater numbers of perch eggs and produced smaller clutches during the parasitic period than in the non-parasitic period. These behavior can be regarded as anti-parasitism tactics because minnows prefer to spawn in nests with higher numbers of perch eggs.  相似文献

Spatial organization was estimated in mixed-species groups of ants with interindividual distance measures as a function of: (1) the age of the workers when associated; and (2) the presence of the brood. Workers ofManica rubida (Myrmicinae) andFormica selysi (Formicinae) were reared in single-species groups (control) or in artificial, mixed-species groups, created 5 h, 12 h or 22 h after emergence, with or without brood. By recording the location of each individual in the nest during the 10 days following the creation of the groups, we evaluated the spatial organization and the interindividual distances between homocolonial or allospecific workers, and between workers and homocolonial or allospecific brood. The cohesion of the group, depend on the age of the workers when associated: the younger the individuals are when the groups are created, the smaller are the interindividual distances. Moreover, homocolonial individuals aggregated with brood, when present, which improves the overall cohesion of the group. However, in mixed groups, both species associated preferentially with members of their own species. This suggests that newly-emerged ants do not depend totally on the odors of their nestmates to construct their recognition template and that they also possess an innate, specific template.  相似文献
