Evidence from both animal and human studies suggests that adenosine plays a role in the regulation of exercise hyperemia in skeletal muscle. We tested whether adenosine also plays a role in the regulation of blood flow (BF) distribution and heterogeneity among and within quadriceps femoris (QF) muscles during exercise, measured using positron emission tomography. In six healthy young women, BF was measured at rest and then during three incremental low and moderate intermittent isometric one-legged knee-extension exercise intensities without and with theophylline-induced nonselective adenosine receptor blockade. BF heterogeneity within muscles was calculated from 16-mm(3) voxels in BF images and heterogeneity among the muscles from the mean values of the four QF compartments. Mean BF in the whole QF and its four parts increased, and heterogeneity decreased with workload both without and with theophylline (P < 0.001). Adenosine receptor blockade did not have any effect on mean bulk BF or BF heterogeneity among the QF muscles, yet blockade increased within-muscle BF heterogeneity in all four QF muscles (P = 0.03). Taken together, these results show that BF becomes less heterogeneous with increasing exercise intensity in the QF muscle group. Adenosine seems to play a role in muscle BF heterogeneity even in the absence of changes in bulk BF at low and moderate one-leg intermittent isometric exercise intensities.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the electromyographic (EMG) amplitudes of the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscles during a maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) to submaximal and maximal dynamic concentric contractions during active exercises. A secondary purpose was to provide information about the type of contraction that may be most appropriate for normalization of EMG data if one wants to determine if a lower extremity closed chain exercise is of sufficient intensity to produce a strengthening response for the QF muscles. Sixty-eight young healthy volunteers (39 female, 29 male) with no lower extremity pain or injury participated in the study. Surface electrodes recorded EMG amplitudes from the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO), rectus femoris (RF), and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles during 5 different isometric and dynamic concentric exercises. The last 27 subjects performed an additional 4 exercises from which a second data set could be analyzed. Maximum isokinetic knee extension and moderate to maximum closed chain exercises activated the QF significantly more than a MVIC. A 40-cm. lateral step-up exercise produced EMG amplitudes of the QF muscles of similar magnitude as the maximum isokinetic knee extension exercises and would be an exercise that could be considered for strengthening the QF muscles. Most published EMG studies of exercises for the QF have been performed by comparing EMG amplitudes during dynamic exercises to a MVIC. This procedure can lead one to overestimate the value of a dynamic exercise for strengthening the QF muscles. We suggest that when studying the efficacy of a dynamic closed chain exercise for strengthening the QF muscles, the exercise be normalized to a dynamic maximum muscle contraction such as that obtained with knee extension during isokinetic testing.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the superficial quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle electromyogram (EMG) during fatiguing knee extensions. Thirty young adults were evaluated for their one-repetition maximum (1RM) during a seated, right-leg, inertial knee extension. All subjects then completed a single set of repeated knee extensions at 50% 1RM, to failure. Subjects performed a knee extension (concentric phase), held the weight with the knee extended for 2s (isometric phase), and lowered the weight in a controlled manner (eccentric phase). Raw EMG of the vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) muscles were full-wave rectified, integrated and normalized to the 1RM EMG, for each respective phase and repetition. The EMG median frequency (f(med)) was computed during the isometric phase. An increase in QF muscle EMG was observed during the concentric phase across the exercise duration. VL EMG was greater than the VM and RF muscles during the isometric phase, in which no significant changes occurred in any of the muscles across the exercise duration. A significant decrease in EMG across the exercise duration was observed during the eccentric phase, with the VL EMG greater than the VM and RF muscles. A greater decrease in VL and RF muscle f(med) during the isometric phase, than the VM muscle, was observed with no gender differences. The findings demonstrated differential recruitment of the superficial QF muscle, depending on the contraction mode during dynamic knee extension exercise, where VL muscle dominance appears to manifest across the concentric-isometric-eccentric transition.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of endurance training on skeletal muscle hemodynamics and oxygen consumption. Seven healthy endurance-trained and seven untrained subjects were studied. Oxygen uptake, blood flow, and blood volume were measured in the quadriceps femoris muscle group by use of positron emission tomography and [15O]O2, [15O]H2O, and [15O]CO during rest and one-legged submaximal intermittent isometric exercise. The oxygen extraction fraction was higher (0.49 +/- 0.14 vs. 0.29 +/- 0.12; P = 0.017) and blood transit time longer (0.6 +/- 0.1 vs. 0.4 +/- 0.1 min; P = 0.04) in the exercising muscle of the trained compared with the untrained subjects. The flow heterogeneity by means of relative dispersion was lower for the exercising muscle in the trained (50 +/- 9%) compared with the untrained subjects (65 +/- 13%, P = 0.025). In conclusion, oxygen extraction is higher, blood transit time longer, and perfusion more homogeneous in endurance-trained subjects compared with untrained subjects at the same workload. These changes may be associated with improved exercise efficiency in the endurance-trained subjects.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to examine the superficial quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle electromyogram (EMG) during dynamic sub-maximal knee extension exercise between young adult men and women. Thirty subjects completed, in a random order, 2 sub-maximal repetitions of single-leg knee extensions at 20-90% of their one-repetition maximum (1RM). Vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) muscle integrated EMG (IEMG) during each sub-maximal lift was normalized to the respective 1RM for concentric, isometric and eccentric modes. The EMG median frequency (f(med)) was determined over the isometric mode. Men attained a significantly (p<0.05) greater knee angular velocity than the women during the concentric mode (83.6+/-19.1 degrees /s and 67.4+/-19.8 degrees /s, respectively). RF IEMG was significantly lesser than the VM (p=0.014) and VL (p<0.001) muscles, when collapsed across all contraction modes, loads, and sex. Overall IEMG was significantly greater during the concentric (p<0.001) and isometric (p<0.001) modes, than the eccentric mode. Men generated significantly (p=0.03) greater VL muscle IEMG than the women, while the opposite pattern emerged for the RF muscle. VM f(med) (105.1+/-11.1Hz) was significantly lesser than the VL (180.3+/-19.5Hz) and RF (127.7+/-13.9Hz) muscles across all lifting intensities, while the men (137.7+/-10.7Hz) generated greater values than the women (129.0+/-11.4Hz). The findings demonstrate a reduction in QF muscle activation across the concentric to eccentric transition, which may be related to the mode-specific velocity pattern.  相似文献

This study examined the electromyographic (EMG) response of the upper rectus abdominis (URA), lower rectus abdominis (LRA), internal obliques (IOs), external obliques (EOs), and the rectus femoris (RF) during various abdominal exercises (crunch, supine V-up, prone V-up on ball, prone V-up on slide board, prone V-up on TRX, and prone V-up on Power Wheel). The subjects (n = 21) performed an isometric contraction of the abdominal musculature while performing these exercises. Testing revealed no statistically significant differences between any of the exercises with respect to the EOs, the URA, or the LRA. However, when examining the IO muscle, the supine V-up exercise displayed significantly greater muscle activity than did the slide exercise. In addition, EMG activity of the RF during the crunch was significantly less than in any of the other 5 exercises. These results indicate that when performing isometric abdominal exercises, non-equipment-based exercises stressed the abdominal muscles similarly to equipment-based exercises. Based on the findings of the current study, the benefit of training the abdominal musculature in an isometric fashion using commercial equipment could be called into question.  相似文献

We investigated the role of central activation in muscle length-dependent endurance. Central activation ratio (CAR) and rectified surface electromyogram (EMG) were studied during fatigue of isometric contractions of the knee extensors at 30 and 90 degrees knee angles (full extension = 0 degree). Subjects (n = 8) were tested on a custom-built ergometer. Maximal voluntary isometric knee extension with supramaximal superimposed burst stimulation (three 100-mus pulses; 300 Hz) was performed to assess CAR and maximal torque capacity (MTC). Surface EMG signals were obtained from vastus lateralis and rectus femoris muscles. At each angle, intermittent (15 s on 6 s off) isometric exercise at 50% MTC with superimposed stimulation was performed to exhaustion. During the fatigue task, a sphygmomanometer cuff around the upper thigh ensured full occlusion (400 mmHg) of the blood supply to the knee extensors. At least 2 days separated fatigue tests. MTC was not different between knee angles (30 degrees : 229.6 +/- 39.3 N.m vs. 90 degrees: 215.7 +/- 13.2 N.m). Endurance times, however, were significantly longer (P < 0.05) at 30 vs. 90 degrees (87.8 +/- 18.7 vs. 54.9 +/- 12.1 s, respectively) despite the CAR not differing between angles at torque failure (30 degrees: 0.95 +/- 0.05 vs. 90 degrees: 0.96 +/- 0.03) and full occlusion of blood supply to the knee extensors. Furthermore, rectified surface EMG values of the vastus lateralis (normalized to prefatigue maximum) were also similar at torque failure (30 degrees : 56.5 +/- 12.5% vs. 90 degrees : 58.3 +/- 15.2%), whereas rectus femoris EMG activity was lower at 30 degrees (44.3 +/- 12.4%) vs. 90 degrees (69.5 +/- 25.3%). We conclude that differences in endurance at different knee angles do not find their origin in differences in central activation and blood flow but may be a consequence of muscle length-related differences in metabolic cost.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare rectus abdominis and erector spinae muscle activity during isometric (prone bridge [PB] and superman [SM]) and dynamic strengthening exercises (back squat, front squat [FS], and military press). Participants (n = 10, age 21.8 ± 2.6 years; body mass 82.65 ± 10.80 kg, 174.5± 7.2 cm), performed each exercise in a randomized order, using a repeated-measures design. Electromyographical (EMG) activity (sampling at 2,000 Hz) of the rectus abdominis (RA) and the erector spinae (ES) muscles was recorded throughout the duration of the exercises. Intraclass correlations demonstrated the highest levels of reliability for muscle activity during the isometric exercises; however, all exercises demonstrated high level of reliability (r = 0.764-0.998, p ≤ 0.01). The PB demonstrated significantly greater (p < 0.01) RA activity compared to all other exercises. The ES activity was significantly (p < 0.01) greater during the FS (1.010 ± 0.308 root mean square value [RMS (V)]) and SM (0.951 ± 0.217 RMS[V]) and compared to all other exercises, although there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the FS and the SM exercise. The PB may be the most suitable exercise for strengthening the RA, compared to dynamic exercises at a low to moderate load, because of a higher level of muscle activity. The FS may be a useful alternative to isometric exercises when strengthening the ES, because it results in slightly higher muscle activity levels when using only a light to moderate load. Because of the dynamic nature of the FS, this may also be more beneficial in transferring to activities of daily living and sporting environments.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a commercial abdominal machine (Ab-Slide) and three common abdominal strengthening exercises (abdominal crunch, supine double leg thrust, and side bridge) on activating abdominal and minimizing extraneous (nonabdominal) musculature-namely, the rectus femoris muscle. We recruited 10 males and 12 females whose mean (+/- SD) percent body fat was 10.7 +/- 4 and 20.7% +/- 3.2%, respectively. Electromyographic (EMG) data were recorded using surface electrodes for the rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and rectus femoris. We recorded peak EMG activity for each muscle during each of the four exercises and normalized the EMG values by maximum muscle contractions (% MVIC). A two-factor repeated-measures analysis of variance assessed differences in normalized EMG activity among the different exercise variations (p < 0.05). Post hoc analyses were performed using the Bonferroni-adjusted alpha to assess between-exercise pair comparisons (p < 0.002). Gender did not affect performance; hence, data were collapsed across gender. We found a muscle x exercise interaction (F9,189 = 5.2, p < 0.001). Post hoc analyses revealed six pairwise differences. The Ab-Slide elicited the greatest EMG activity for the abdominal muscles and the least for the rectus femoris. The supine double leg thrust could be a problem for patients with low-back pathology due to high rectus femoris muscle activity.  相似文献

In this study, we examined whether different exercise modes provoke functional differences in maximal and explosive force-generating capacities and fatigability of the quadriceps femoris (QF). Additionally, the interaction of different functional capacities was studied in competitive athletes. Ten competitive tennis players and 10 endurance athletes participated in the study. Pre-exercise force-generating capacities were determined during maximal voluntary isometric knee extensions (MVC). Fatigability of the QF was studied using sustained isometric contractions with target loads of 20% and 40% of pre-exercise MVC. Postexercise MVCs were conducted 20 seconds, 1 minute, and 3 minutes post task failure. Muscle activation of the QF during the fatiguing exercises and postexercise MVCs was estimated using surface electromyography. Higher explosive force-generating capacities, but no differences in absolute moments, were detected in tennis players compared with endurance athletes. Fatigability of the QF during both fatiguing tasks was approximately the same in both athletic populations. This was indicated by minor group differences in endurance time, postexercise MVC production, and electromyography (EMG)-estimated muscle activation during fatigue. Variability in endurance time was not significantly associated with pre-exercise force-generating capacities in these competitive athletes. In both athletic populations, recovery of MVC was significantly slower after the fatiguing contraction with 20% of MVC compared with that with 40% of MVC. These results may enhance understanding of plasticity of the neuromuscular system and yield interesting information for the optimization of athletic training programs. Explosive strength training might enhance endurance athletes' explosiveness without decreasing muscle fatigue resistance. The exercise profile of competitive tennis is suggested to act as a sufficient trigger to reach high neuromuscular fatigue resistance but may be inadequate to cause significant gains in absolute muscle strength.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were to attempt to record surface electromyography (EMG) from the superficial region of vastus intermedius (VI) and to investigate the influence of adjacent muscle activity on surface EMG of VI. First, serial axial magnetic resonance imaging of the thigh was performed for 45 healthy young men to determine morphological characteristics of the VI. Second, surface EMG activity of the VI and other quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle group components were recorded in maximum voluntary contraction during isometric knee extension from 11 healthy young men. To test cross-talk of EMG signals between VI and the nearest adjacent muscle, vastus lateralis (VL), we applied cooling for 20-min on VL to selectively alter activity. Cooling the skin above a muscle is known to decrease median frequency (MF) of EMG signal of the muscle. All subjects displayed a superficial region in VI sufficiently large (14 cm2) to record surface EMG. Surface EMG of VI could be detected in the same scale as other QF muscle group components. Cooling induced a significant MF decrease only in VL (from 92.5 to 44.2 Hz, p < 0.001), but no significant change was observed in VI (from 63.8 to 61.7 Hz). From this result, we concluded the muscle activity of VL is negligible on surface EMG detected from VI during isometric contraction.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of static versus dynamic stretching on peak torque (PT) and electromyographic (EMG), and mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude of the biceps femoris muscle (BF) during isometric maximal voluntary contractions of the leg flexors at four different knee joint angles. Fourteen men ((mean +/- SD) age, 25 +/- 4 years) performed two isometric leg flexion maximal voluntary contractions at knee joint angles of 41 degrees , 61 degrees , 81 degrees , and 101 degrees below full leg extension. EMG (muV) and MMG (m x s(-2)) signals were recorded from the BF muscle while PT values (Nm) were sampled from an isokinetic dynamometer. The right hamstrings were stretched with either static (stretching time, 9.2 +/- 0.4 minutes) or dynamic (9.1 +/- 0.3 minutes) stretching exercises. Four repetitions of three static stretching exercises were held for 30 seconds each, whereas four sets of three dynamic stretching exercises were performed (12-15 repetitions) with each set lasting 30 seconds. PT decreased after the static stretching at 81 degrees (p = 0.019) and 101 degrees (p = 0.001) but not at other angles. PT did not change (p > 0.05) after the dynamic stretching. EMG amplitude remained unchanged after the static stretching (p > 0.05) but increased after the dynamic stretching at 101 degrees (p < 0.001) and 81 degrees (p < 0.001). Despite the wide use of surface electromyography (EMG) recorded during dynamic exercises, the reproducibility of EMG variables has not been fully established in a course of a dynamic leg exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of eight lower limb muscles activity level during a pedaling exercise performed until exhaustion. Eight male were tested on two days held three days apart. Surface EMG was recorded from vastus lateralis, rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis, semimembranosus, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius lateral, gastrocnemius medianus and tibialis anterior during incremental exercise test. The root mean square, an index of global EMG activity, was averaged every five crank revolutions (corresponding to about 3 s at 85 rpm) throughout the tests. Despite inter-subjects variations, we showed a high reproducibility of the activity level of lower limb muscles during a progressive pedaling exercise performed until exhaustion. However, RF muscle seemed to be the less reproducible of the eight muscles investigated during incremental pedaling exercise. These results suggest that each subject adopt a personal muscle activation strategy in a course of an incremental cycling exercise but fatigue phenomenon can induce some variations in the most fatigable muscles (RF).  相似文献

This study was designed to determine trial-to-trial and day-to-day reproducibility of isometric force and electromyogram activity (EMG) of the knee extensor muscles in water and on dry land as well as to make comparisons between the two training conditions in muscle activity and force production. A group of 20 healthy subjects (12 women and 8 men) were tested three times over 2 weeks. A measurement session consisted of recordings of maximal and submaximal isometric knee extension force with simultaneous recording of surface EMG from the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and biceps femoris muscles. To ensure identical measurement conditions the same patient elevator chair was used in both the dry and the wet environment. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CV) showed high trial-to-trial (ICC = 0.95-0.99, CV = 3.5%-11%) and day-to-day reproducibility (ICC=0.85-0.98, CV=11%-19%) for underwater and dry land measurements of force and EMG in each muscle during maximal contractions. The day-to-day reproducibility for submaximal contractions was similar. The interesting finding was that underwater EMG amplitude decreased significantly in each muscle during maximal (P < 0.01-P < 0.001) and submaximal contractions (P < 0.05-P < 0.001). However, the isometric force measurements showed similar values in both wet and dry conditions. The water had no disturbing effect on the electrodes as shown by slightly lowered interelectrode resistance values, the absence of artefacts and low noise levels of the EMG signals. It was concluded that underwater force and EMG measurements are highly reproducible. The significant decrease of underwater EMG could have electromechanical and/or neurophysiological explanations.  相似文献

Regulation of subcutaneous adipose tissue blood flow (ATBF) remains poorly elucidated in humans, especially during exercise. In the present study we tested the role of adenosine in the regulation of ATBF adjacent to active and inactive thigh muscles during intermittent isometric knee-extension exercise (1 s contraction followed by 2 s rest with workloads of 50, 100, and 150 N) in six healthy young women. ATBF was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) without and with unspecific adenosine receptor inhibitor theophylline infused intravenously. Adipose regions were localized from fused PET and magnetic resonance images. Blood flow in subcutaneous adipose tissue adjacent to active muscle increased from rest (1.0 ± 0.3 ml·100 g(-1)·min(-1)) to exercise (P < 0.001) and along with increasing exercise intensity (50 N = 4.1 ± 1.4, 100 N = 5.4 ± 1.8, and 150 N = 6.9 ± 3.0 ml·100 g(-1)·min(-1), P = 0.03 for the increase). In contrast, ATBF adjacent to inactive muscle remained at resting levels with all intensities (~1.0 ± 0.5 ml·100 g(-1)·min(-1)). During exercise theophylline prevented the increase in ATBF adjacent to active muscle especially during the highest exercise intensity (50 N = 4.3 ± 1.8 ml·100 g(-1)·min(-1), 100 N = 4.0 ± 1.5 ml·100 g(-1)·min(-1), and 150 N = 4.9 ± 1.8 ml·100 g(-1)·min(-1), P = 0.06 for an overall effect) but had no effect on blood flow adjacent to inactive muscle or adipose blood flow in resting contralateral leg. In conclusion, we report in the present study that 1) blood flow in subcutaneous adipose tissue of the leg is increased from rest to exercise in an exercise intensity-dependent manner, but only in the vicinity of working muscle, and 2) adenosine receptor antagonism attenuates this blood flow enhancement at the highest exercise intensities.  相似文献

Animal models implicate multiple mechanical factors in the initiation of exercise-induced muscle injury. Muscle injury has been widely studied in humans, but few data exist regarding the underlying cause of muscle injury. This study sought to examine the role of torque per active muscle volume in muscle injury. Eight subjects performed 80 electrically stimulated [via electromyostimulation (EMS)] eccentric contractions of the right and left quadriceps femoris (QF) through an 80 degrees arc at 120 degrees /s. Specific torque was varied by applying 25-Hz EMS to one thigh and 100-Hz EMS to the contralateral thigh. Transverse relaxation time (T2) magnetic resonance images of the QF were collected before and 3 days after the eccentric exercise bouts. Injury was assessed via changes in isometric force and ratings of soreness over the course of 14 days after exercise and by determining changes in T2 and muscle volume 3 days after exercise. The 100-Hz EMS induced greater force loss (P < 0. 05), soreness (P < 0.05), change in muscle volume (P = 0.03), and volume of muscle demonstrating increased T2 (P = 0.005) than the 25-Hz EMS. In addition, injury was found to be similar across the QF in all but the most proximal regions of the QF. Our findings suggest that, in humans, high torque per active volume during lengthening muscle contractions is related to muscle injury.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that efferent sympathetic neural discharge is coupled with the development of muscle fatigue during voluntary exercise in humans. In 12 healthy subjects (aged 20-34 yr) we measured heart rate (HR), arterial blood pressure (AP), and noncontracting, skeletal muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in the leg (peroneal nerve) before (control) and during each of three trials of submaximal (30% of maximum) isometric handgrip exercise performed to exhaustion. In six of the subjects of eletromyographic (EMG) activity of the exercising forearm was also measured. HR and AP increased significantly (P less than 0.05) in the 1st min of exercise in all trials. In contrast, neither MSNA nor EMG activity increased significantly above control during the 1st min of exercise, but both parameters subsequently increased in a progressive and parallel manner (P less than 0.05). The overall correlation coefficient between MSNA and EMG activity (144 observations) was 0.85 (P less than 0.001). With successive trials the magnitudes of the increases in HR, AP, MSNA, and EMG activity were greater at any absolute point in time during exercise. These results indicate that sympathetic activation to noncontracting skeletal muscle is directly related to the development of muscle fatigue (as assessed by the change in EMG) during prolonged isometric exercise in humans. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that previous fatiguing contractions alter the time course of the sympathetic neural adjustments to exercise.  相似文献

Although the possibility that the vastus intermedius (VI) muscle contributes to flexion of the knee joint has been suggested previously, the detail of its functional role in knee flexion is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the antagonist coactivation of VI during isometric knee flexion. Thirteen men performed 25–100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at 90°, 120°, and 150° knee joint angles. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the four individual muscles in the quadriceps femoris (QF) was recorded and normalized by the EMG signals during isometric knee extension at MVC. Cross-talk on VI EMG signal was assessed based on the median frequency response to selective cooling of hamstring muscles. Normalized EMG of the VI was significantly higher than that of the other synergistic QF muscles at each knee joint angle (all P < 0.05) with minimum cross-talk from the hamstrings to VI. There were significant correlations between the EMG signal of the hamstrings and VI (r = 0.55–0.85, P < 0.001). These results suggest that VI acts as a primary antagonistic muscle of QF during knee flexion, and that VI is presumably a main contributor to knee joint stabilization.  相似文献

The EMG power spectrum may shift towards higher frequencies with higher movement velocities. Fatigue, on the other hand, can cause a decrease in the frequency components. The purpose of this study was to examine acute effects of explosive (EE) and heavy resistance (HRE) concentric leg press exercise on muscle force, EMG and blood lactate. The EE included five sets of ten repetitions with 40±6% of the isometric maximum at a 100° knee angle performed as explosively as possible. The same number of repetitions was performed in HRE but with a heavier load (67±7% of the isometric maximum at a 100° knee angle). Maximal isometric and single concentric actions of different loads, and an isometric fatigue test were measured before and after both exercises. Surface EMG was recorded from the vastus medialis muscles for analyses of average EMG (aEMG) and EMG power spectrum. Muscle fiber composition of the vastus lateralis was determined and blood lactate measured throughout the exercises. Mean power frequency and median frequency were higher during EE than during HRE (P<0.05). They increased during EE (P<0.05) as the exercise progressed, whereas during HRE no change or even slight decreases were observed. Signs of fatigue after pure concentric work were not observed after EE, and even after HRE, possibly due to the relatively small range of motion and short duration of action time, the fatigue was not that extensive. The relative number of fast twitch fibers was correlated (r=0.87, P<0.05) with the change in blood lactate in HRE. It was concluded that there may be a greater use of fast twitch motor units in explosive movements and that instead of fatigue, the present number of concentric actions in explosive exercise seems to have facilitated the neuromuscular system.  相似文献

Proper muscle activation is a key feature of survival in different tasks in daily life as well as sports performance, but can be impaired in elderly and in diseases. Therefore it is also clinically important to better understand the phenomenon that can be elucidated in humans non-invasively by positron emission tomography (PET) with measurements of spatial heterogeneity of glucose uptake within and among muscles during exercise. We studied six healthy young men during 35 minutes of cycling at relative intensities of 30% (low), 55% (moderate), and 75% (high) of maximal oxygen consumption on three separate days. Glucose uptake in the quadriceps femoris muscle group (QF), the main force producing muscle group in recreational cycling, and its four individual muscles, was directly measured using PET and 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose. Within-muscle heterogeneity was determined by calculating the coefficient of variance (CV) of glucose uptake in PET image voxels within the muscle of interest, and among-muscles heterogeneity of glucose uptake in QF was expressed as CV of the mean glucose uptake values of its separate muscles. With increasing intensity, within-muscle heterogeneity decreased in the entire QF as well as within its all four individual parts. Among-muscles glucose uptake heterogeneity also decreased with increasing intensity. However, mean glucose uptake was consistently lower and heterogeneity higher in rectus femoris muscle that is known to consist of the highest percentage of fast twitch type II fibers, compared to the other three QF muscles. In conclusion, these results show that in addition to increased contribution of distinct muscle parts, with increases in exercise intensity there is also an enhanced recruitment of muscle fibers within all of the four heads of QF, despite established differences in muscle-part specific fiber type distributions. Glucose uptake heterogeneity may serve as a useful non-invasive tool to elucidate muscle activation in aging and diseased populations.  相似文献
