DNA barcoding has become a useful system for linking different biological life stages, and for identification of species within a known taxonomic framework. In this study, we generated mitochondrial DNA COI barcodes using adult specimens of all 22 species of the hoverfly genus Merodon (Diptera, Syrphidae) occurring on Lesvos island (Greece). The generated COI barcodes could well discriminate between all Merodon taxa of Lesvos, except for M. loewi and M. papillus that shared the same haplotype, despite their clear morphological differences. In addition, the barcodes revealed two cases of hitherto unknown morphologically cryptic species close to M. avidus and M. nigritarsis, respectively. Because only few successful rearings of immature stages of Merodon hoverflies are available, the larval host plant remains unknown for these phytophagous taxa. The obtained COI barcode library for the Merodon spp. of Lesvos will constitute a tool to link any unknown immature stages with already known species, and thus provide important life-history information and promise for ecological studies.

Pachyrhynchus sonani Kôno, 1930, a legally protected species in Taiwan, is endemic to Lanyu Island (Orchid Island) and Ludao Island (Green Island). Because of its unclear life history, the host and immature stages of this species in the wild have not so far been recorded. On Lanyu Island, we recently identified Barringtonia asiatica as a host plant of P. sonani, with several larvae feeding on its xylem. Herein, we describe its biology and the habitat surrounding the host plant.

The presence of Megalorhipida leucodactyla (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae) in Chile is reported for the first time from the Azapa valley, northern Chile. In this locality, some immature stages of M. leucodactyla were found to be associated with Tessaria absinthioides (Hook. & Arn.) DC., Asteraceae, a new host plant record at the species, genus and family level for M. leucodactyla.

Abstract: Tetranychus urticae is a serious pest of several crops worldwide. It performs differentially on diverse host‐plant species. Because dispersion is mainly passive, the process of host‐plant selection should be viewed in terms of host‐plant acceptance and not in terms of host finding. The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) the acceptance of strawberry (S) in comparison with onion (O), leek (L) and parsley (P) by T. urticae; and (2) the suitability of these host plants for the performance of T. urticae, in terms of fecundity and survival. Host‐plant acceptance was measured through females that settled on a test plant or females that left for another host plant. In another experiment, for a duration of 5 days, individual newly mated females were assigned to discs of each host plant and the fecundity, the maximum number of offspring obtained from one female that settled on the disc, the survival and the percentage of females that oviposited at least one egg were analysed. A choice test to measure the preference of females for different host plants was performed. Movements took place towards (S) from the three plants: (O), (L) and (P). Mites significantly moved to other places in the Petri dishes from leek‐origin discs. Dispersal of T. urticae from (S) to other host‐plant discs was similar for all plants. Mean fecundity was higher on (S) than on the other plants. The maximum number of offspring per female was highest on (S), lowest on (L) and (O), and intermediate on (P). Survival of females and percentage of females that laid at least one egg were independent of the host plant. The choice test showed that oviposition was higher on (S) and (P) and very poor on (L) and (O) and that more females settled on (S) and (P). Although mites migrated from parsley to strawberry, the first host plant has a higher acceptance of T. urticae in terms of maximum number of offspring per female than onion and leek, and a lower performance in terms of fecundity than strawberry. Parsley could be a good candidate for an associate plant in a strawberry crop; however, it needs more research under field conditions.

I determined the difference in sensitivity of immature and adult mites to host plants with regard to diapause induction. I used immature and adult polyphagous spider mites, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida (Acari: Tetranychidae), and two host plants, Orixa japonica Thunb. (Rutaceae) and Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae). The diapause incidence was investigated in two adult mite-host and two immature mite-host combinations of treatments. The incidence of diapause induction was much higher in mites developing on O. japonica than those on P. vulgaris, whichever host plants they fed on in adulthood. The host plants affected adult mites to a much lesser extent than the immature mites, though the mites feeding on O. japonica showed a consistently higher diapause incidence. These results suggest that host plants affect diapause induction to a greater extent in immature mites than in adult mites.

The chalcid, Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov has been recorded in many parts of the world as a major larval-pupal, gregarious endoparasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), a serious pest of brassica vegetable crops worldwide. This study investigated intraspecific variation between two populations of O. sokiolowskii, one from Cape Verde Islands, West Africa and the other from Hangzhou, China. In all crosses and backcrosses between the two geographical populations, the numbers of progeny and sex ratio of progeny were similar to those obtained within each of the populations, demonstrating complete reproductive compatibility between the two populations. The two populations showed similar responses to temperature with respect to development time and survival of immature stages. Observations on the interactions between the two O. sokolowskii populations and Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov), another major parasitoid of P. xylostella, showed that neither population could achieve successful parasitism of P. xylostella larvae already parasitized by C. plutellae. However, both O. sokolowskii populations could achieve hyperparasitism by ovipositing into a mid-late stage larva of C. plutellae developing inside the primary host. Contrary to earlier reports, no evidence of intraspecific variations in ability to hyperparasitize between these two populations of O. sokolowskii was found.

The life cycle of Amblyomma cooperi was evaluated under laboratory conditions testing different host species. Larval infestations were performed on chickens (Gallus gallus) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Nymphal infestations were performed on G. gallus, H. hydrochaeris, guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and wild mice (Calomys callosus). Infestations by adult ticks were performed only on capybaras. All free-living stages were observed in darkness at 27 degrees C and RH 85%. Capybaras were significantly (p < 0.05) the most suitable hosts for immature ticks, with the highest larval (63.6%) and nymphal (48%) recovery. Larval and nymphal feeding and premolt periods were significantly different (p < 0.05) between ticks fed on different host species. Male nymphs showed premolt period significantly shorter (p < 0.05) than female nymphs. The overall sex ratio of adult ticks was 0.92:1 (M:F). Infestations by adult ticks on capybaras yielded more than 76% of engorged female recovery. Only three out of 33 engorged females fed on capybaras did not lay fertile eggs. The life cycle of A. cooperi in laboratory, reported for the first time, was completed in an average period of 189.4 days. During the premolt period, all A. cooperi engorged nymphs secreted distinct blackish drops, which seem to be inherent to this species. Our results, associated data in the literature, confirm the high suitability of capybaras for the adult stage of A. cooperi and also indicate this animal species as a primary host for immature stages of A. cooperi in nature. On the other hand, the results of larval and nymphal infestation on chickens and guinea pigs suggest that birds and wild guinea pigs, which are also present in the distribution area of A. cooperi in South America, could be potentially infested by A. cooperi immature stages in nature.

Life history traits of the phytophagous ladybird beetle,Epilachna niponica were compared between a non-pest population feeding on wild thistle and a pest population feeding on cultivated solanaceous crops, mainly potato. The pest population had larger females, a higher population growth rate, a more continuous oviposition schedule, and a shorter developmental period in the immature stages, compared with the non-pest population. The two populations showed no clear differences in phenology from spring to autumn, egg mass size, hatchability, and larval survival rate. Significant differences were found in number of eggs laid per female during the first and second periods, and in the developmental period of the immature stages. These life history traits were influenced primarily by food plant. A higher fecundity and shorter immature period appear to be readily altered by the host shift from thistle to potato.

A mirid,Eccritotarsus catarinensis(Carvalho), was studied as a potentially damaging natural enemy for water hyacinth, (Eichhornia crassipes(Mart.) Solms-Laub.), in South Africa. In the laboratory, eggs were inserted into the leaf tissue parallel to the leaf surface. The four nymphal instars fed gregariously with the adults mainly on the undersurface of the leaves, causing severe chlorosis at high population levels. The duration of immature stages (egg and nymphs) was approximately 23 days, while the adults survived for approximately 50 days. Favorable biological characteristics ofE. catarinensisincluded a high rate of increase, gregarious habits, long-lived and mobile adults, and several generations per year. Laboratory host range of the mirid was determined by adult choice trials on 67 plant species in 36 families and adult no-choice trials on five species in the Pontederiaceae. Feeding was recorded on all Pontederiaceae tested and oviposition on four of the five species. However, these plant species proved to be inferior hosts forE. catarinensisin comparison to water hyacinth, suggesting thatE. catarinensiswould be an acceptable natural enemy for water hyacinth in South Africa.

Development of the immature stages of Rhyssa persuasoria (L.) on the larvae, prepupae and pupae of Sirex noctilio F. was followed in situ in Pinus radiata D. Don. by an X-ray technique.
R. persuasoria females were allowed to oviposit in wood in which the location of immature stages of S. noctilio had been determined radiographically. By this means it was found that they could not locate their hosts with certainty. When a host was located the female parasite paralysed it by stinging and laid an egg upon it. The host was consumed within five weeks and the parasite passed through four larval instars before pupation.

Abstract:  Side effects of two azadirachtin formulations [NeemAzal-U (17% azadirachtin) and NeemAzal®-T/S (1% azadirachtin)] and two biorationale pesticides – Success® (Spinosad) and Abamectin (Avermectin) – on two endoparasitoids Opius ( Opiothorax ) chromatomyiae and Neochrysocharis formosa of Liriomyza sativae were investigated under laboratory conditions. The eggs of O. chromatomyiae , and the eggs, larvae and pupae of N. formosa within the host or within the plant/host complex were exposed to NeemAzal, Success and Abamectin at different dose rates. Adult emergence of O. chromatomyiae from parasitized L. sativae in NeemAzal-U (0.75, 1.5, 2.25 and 3 g/l water) drenched soil was only slightly lower than from untreated control hosts. In contrast, adult emergence of unparasitized L. sativae was almost completely inhibited by NeemAzal-U, indicating a high, direct toxicity. Development of O. chromatomyiae within L3 of L. sativae was very much affected from topical applications of NeemAzal®-T/S, Success® and Abamectin at particular dose rates. Spraying of tomato leaves with NeemAzal®-T/S revealed no detrimental effect on the adult emergence of N. formosa developing in mining L2 of L. sativae . This was in contrast to Success® and Abamectin which strongly affected N. formosa adult emergence when applied at different immature developmental stages of N. formosa .

We sampled Inga Busk species caterpillars weekly in the cerrado on 15 plants of Diospyros burchellii Hern. (Ebenaceae) from January 2002 to December 2003, on 30 plants of Caryocar brasiliense (Caryocaraceae) from July 2003 to June 2004, and since 1991 on several other plant species. In total we found 15 species of Inga on cerrado host plants. Nine species were very rare, with only one to five adults reared. The other six species occurred throughout the year, with higher abundance during the dry season, from May to July, coinciding with overall peaks of caterpillar abundance in the cerrado. Caterpillars of the genus Inga build shelters by tying and lining two mature or old leaves with silk and frass, where they rest and develop (a common habit found in Oecophorinae). The final instar builds a special envelope inside the leaf shelter, where it will complete the larval stage and pupate. The species are very difficult to distinguish in the immature stages. External features were useful in identifying only four species: I. haemataula (Meyrick), I. phaecrossa (Meyrick), I. ancorata (Walsingham), and I. corystes (Meyrick). These four species are polyphagous and have wide geographical distributions. In this paper we provide information on the natural history and host plants of six Inga species common on cerrado host plants, for which there are no reports in the literature.

Host plant quality for insects used in weed biological control influences their performance and hence their ability to suppress target host populations. Determining the specific response of these insects to the quality of their host is important because phytophagous insects have variable tolerances of the different constituents of host plant quality, most notably dietary nitrogen (N), but also other physical and chemical components. The invasive aquatic weed Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) was cultivated under varying nutrient conditions to determine the influence of plant quality on immature survival, development, larval mining, reproductive output and adult longevity of a leaf-mining fly Hydrellia purcelli Deeming (Diptera: Ephydridae). Additionally, field-collected H. verticillata was included in the investigations to assess the potential performance of H. purcelli in the field. Variation in plant tissue N and phosphorus (P) concentrations had no effects on larval survival, female fecundity, or adult longevity, but high levels of N and P were associated with reduced immature development times and higher body mass of females. Overall, plant quality factors not measured in this study appeared to have a greater impact on the performance of the fly, rather than dietary N and P. The results provided insights into optimal mass-rearing conditions for H. purcelli and the potential performance of the fly in the field in South Africa. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the importance of considering other aspects of plant quality for insect agents, in addition to dietary N and P, when developing mass-rearing protocols or predicting their potential impact in the field.

Seasonal variation in plant quality may be intense enough to generate predictable patterns in insect herbivore populations. In order to explain seasonal oscillations in neotropical populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.), we tested the following: (1) if nutritional quality of cabbage (Brassica oleraceae var. capitata), a primary host plant of diamondback moth, adversely affects the performance of this insect in late spring and early summer, when populations decline and go extinct, and (2) if nutritional features of cabbage change with the seasons. We measured the performance of diamondback moth reared on leaves of cabbages grown during the four seasons of the year. Summer plants proved to be worse for the survival of the immature stages and subsequent adult fecundity, but there were no significant differences between the remaining seasons. Our results support the hypothesis that short-lived plants, grown in different seasons of the year in the tropics, have different nutritional and defensive attributes. We analyzed nutritional quality of cabbage leaves from the four seasons, but only total lipids were reduced in summer plants. Neotropical populations of diamondback moth collapse before plant quality decay in the summer. If the diamondback moth is well adapted to the seasonal deterioration of the habitat, including the reduction in the quality of host plants, it is expected that emigration happens before the mortality increases and natality decreases during the summer.

Myrmecophytes depend on symbiotic ants (plant‐ants) to defend against herbivores. Although these defensive mechanisms are highly effective, some herbivorous insects can use myrmecophytes as their host‐plants. The feeding habits of these phytophages on myrmecophytes and the impacts of the plant‐ants on their feeding behavior have been poorly studied. We examined two phasmid species, Orthomeria alexis and O. cuprinus, which are known to feed on Macaranga (Euphorbiaceae) myrmecophytes in a Bornean primary forest. Our observations revealed that: (i) each phasmid species relied on two closely‐related myrmecophytic Macaranga species for its host‐plants in spite of their normal plant‐ant symbioses; and (ii) there was little overlap between their host‐plant preferences. More O. cuprinus adults and nymphs were found on new leaves, which were attended by more plant‐ants than mature leaves, while most adults and nymphs of O. alexis tended to avoid new leaves. In a feeding choice experiment under ant‐excluded conditions, O. alexis adults chose a non‐host Macaranga myrmecophyte that was more intensively defended by plant‐ants and was more palatable than their usual host‐plants almost as frequently as their usual host‐plant, suggesting that the host‐plant range of O. alexis was restricted by the presence of plant‐ants on non‐host‐plants. Phasmid behavior that appeared to minimize plant‐ant attacks is described.

The influence of three host plants, namely cucumber, tomato and eggplant, on functional response of male, virgin and mated female predatory bug Nesidiocoris tenuis was investigated on different densities of Trialeurodes vaporariorum nymphs. The 24-h experiment conducted at laboratory conditions revealed that N. tenuis exhibited a type II functional response to T. vaporariorum on host plants. There were no significant differences between attack rates, as well as handling times estimated for each adult stage of the predator between host plants. However, on each host plant, the handling time estimated for the mated female in comparison with two other adult stages had lower values (0.7952, 0.6827 and 0.8884?h?1 on cucumber, tomato and eggplant, respectively). Handling time estimated for the mated female on cucumber was significantly lower than that estimated for the male predator. The highest maximum handling rate (T/Th) was estimated for the mated female followed by the virgin female and male on all host plants. For three adult stages of the predator, the highest value of this parameter was determined on tomato followed by cucumber and eggplant. Unlike virgin and mated females, the host plant significantly affected prey consumption by the male. Prey consumed by mated females was higher than those obtained for two other adult stages of the predator on each host plant. The difference in trichome density between three host plants may be responsible for the obtained results. These results revealed that N. tenuis is more effective in the biological control of T. vaporariorum on tomato in comparison with cucumber and eggplant.

From June 2000 to June 2001, a total of 741 ticks were collected from 51 free-living wild animals captured at the Porto-Primavera Hydroelectric power station area, located alongside an approximately 180 km course of the Paran river, between the states of S o Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, comprising 9 species of 3 genera: Ambly-omma (7 species), Boophilus (1) and Anocentor (1). A total of 421 immature Amblyomma ticks were reared in laboratory until the adult stage, allowing identification of the species. A. cajennense was the most frequent tick species (mostly immature stages) collected on 9 host species: Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Tamandua tetradactyla,Cerdocyon thous, Puma concolor,Tayassu tajacu, Mazama gouazoubira,Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris,Alouatta caraya, Cebus apella. Other tick species were less common, generally restricted to certain host taxa.
