A reliable marking technique was needed for a mark–release–recapture experiment with adults of Diabrotica speciosa (Germar). Four marking techniques, acrylic paint (spattered or brushed on the surface of the insect); and fluorescent pigments (dusted on surfaces or mixed with diet to produce an ingested marker), were tested. Fluorescent pigment durability for the dusting and ingested techniques was evaluated for laboratory conditions and under simulated field conditions. The impact of the techniques on beetle survival was also assessed. Both acrylic paint techniques caused mobility problems in the beetles, and neither technique lasted for more than 48 h. Both fluorescent pigment techniques were more reliable, but the dusting technique showed a significantly higher mortality than the control, and duration variations between laboratory and field conditions. Use of fluorescent pigments added to the diet was the most reliable technique. This technique allowed the manipulation of the marking period, and provided reliable timing of marker persistence in the field.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), is classified as endangered in the 2010 IUCN Red List and is protected under Irish and European legislation due to a drastic decline in abundance and range over the past century. Mark-recapture methods play a vital role in the process of estimating population size, and in the monitoring and conservation of mobile species. A variety of marking techniques are routinely used in a range of crayfish species for ecological research. The majority of information on the effects of these marking techniques on the physiology of crayfish species focuses on survivability and growth, whereas information is scarce on the effects on crayfish behaviour. This study investigates the behavioural changes of crayfish in reaction to five commonly used marking techniques in laboratory conditions. The marking techniques used were internal and external passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags, cauterisation and ablation. Effects of marking technique on behaviour were evaluated immediately after marking, and over a 14-day period, on 78 crayfish. Results indicated that the internal passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags negatively affected crayfish behaviour by increasing resting levels. Ablation and cauterisation also increased grooming levels, while marking reduced activity levels in general. These effects on behaviour occurred immediately after marking, but quickly dissipated. These results suggest that the use of internal PIT tags for marking white-clawed crayfish may need to be avoided as increased resting levels could lead to increased exposure out of refuge and predation. This may have a detrimental impact on the welfare and conservation of white-clawed crayfish and also lead to biased population estimates during mark-recapture projects. The remaining marking techniques (external PIT tag, VIE tag, ablation, cauterisation) may be used, as changes in behaviour will not have a detrimental impact and therefore should not lead to biased population estimates.  相似文献

The use of farmed and restocked fish to supplement the worldwide human consumption of fish, recreational fishing stocks, and conservation efforts, is growing at a rapid rate. Yet, monitoring the benefits of using hatchery-raised fish for supplementation is lacking, often due to hatcheries not marking or tagging all fish prior to release, despite a range of easy to apply, cost effective and accurate mass-marking methods being available to mark farmed and restocked fish en masse. Here we review otolith marking techniques that have the capability of mass marking millions of hatchery-reared fish that are, or could be, used for monitoring and compliance purposes. The otolith mass marking methods consist of otolith thermal marking and a range of otolith chemical marking methods (tetracyclines, alizarin compounds, calcein, strontium chloride, stable isotopes of Ba and Sr, and rare earth elements). We assessed and compared marking technique in terms of (1) ease of application, (2) cost of application, (3) mark retention and detectability, and (4) fish welfare. In addition, we determine the suitability of different otolith marking techniques for mass marking entire hatchery populations whether it be for restocking purposes, or for identifying and tracing escapees from aquaculture facilities. We conclude that although some techniques have restricted use due to regulations, the majority of otolith mass marking techniques are simple, easy to apply, cost effective and highly suitable for long term monitoring of hatchery produced fish.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Individual color‐marking is an essential tool for studying the behavior of free‐living birds. Hummingbirds represent a particular challenge for traditional avian color‐marking techniques because of their small size and short tarsi. Although several techniques have been successfully used, the retention time of color‐markers and their safety and ease of construction could be improved. I developed two new color‐marking techniques for marking Little Hermits (Phaethornis longuemareus): (1) a plastic back tag constructed by fusing colored beads, and (2) a leg tag attached to a metal band fitted around the tarsus. Both tag designs were visible in field conditions, and neither appeared to adversely affect behavior. Both back and leg tags had high retention rates within seasons, but back tags had a poor retention rate between years. Although these marking techniques were designed for use on one species of hummingbird, they would likely also be useful with other species of hummingbirds.  相似文献

Three male and three female captive red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) were observed during and outside of the breeding season to examine changes in scent-marking behavior. Variation in scent-marking was analyzed with respect to site preferences, sex differences, onset of breeding, behavioral correlates, and environmental factors. Both males and females exhibited significant preferences for particular marking sites, those being prominent points in the enclosures. Males showed significantly higher scent-marking frequencies than females, except in one enclosure where increased marking behavior was associated with the presence of young. Sexual dimorphism in the pattern of marking was also observed, with males showing a bidirectional mark and females a unidirectional mark. Female marking was greater during the breeding season. Sniffing and number of waddles per mark were associated with scent-marking. Temperature change was not related to frequency of scent-marking. These results are compared with scent-marking behaviors in other species of carnivores and functional explanations are suggested.  相似文献

Scent marking was studied in pine martens (Martes martes) in female-female and male-female pairs. Results show that agonistically dominant individuals generally had higher scent marking frequencies. However, environmental familiarity can modify the social relationship, whatever the previous social experiences, and, consequently, marking activity. Despite important intra-and interindividual variations, the subjects appeared to react to physical and social modifications by an increased marking rate. One factor affecting marking activity in both novel and established pairs was the activity level of the conspecific partner. the data support the hypothesis that pine martens react in the same way to physical and social modifications, but with different response levels. We describe patterns of scent marking observed in two wild populations of lowland woolly monkeys that were the subjects of long-term studies in the westernmost portion of the Amazon basin. The woolly monkeys engaged primarily in two types of scent marking: chest rubbing and anogenital rubbing. In both study populations, males and females performed both types of scent marking, but males chest-rubbed more commonly than females, while females engaged in more anogenital rubbing. We evaluated two nonexclusive hypotheses for the function of scent marking by woolly monkeys: 1) that scent marking is used in sociosexual contexts, and 2) that scent marking is used to convey information about occupancy of or willingness to defend an area from conspecifics in other social groups. We found no association between the occurrence of scent-marking behavior and location within the home range, but did find that scent marking occurred more commonly than expected on days when copulations, mating solicitations, and intergroup encounters were observed. Additionally, mating activity and chest rubbing were highly correlated across the yearly cycle, even when the potentially confounding variable of ripe fruit availability was controlled for. In woolly monkeys, overt male-male competition is rare and female choice is an important part of the mating system. Our results are most consistent with the idea that scent marking plays a role in advertising male quality or competitive ability, and perhaps in coordinating mating activity.  相似文献

The marking behaviour of a rare hystricomorph rodent, the Bahaman hutia (Geocapromys ingrahami), was studied in captivity. Hutias were more likely to mark urine-scented sticks than to mark unscented controls. The odour of conspecific urine readily induced marking and the sight and/or odour of an animal marking often immediately led to marking by other animals. Marking was exhibited by both males and females regardless of whether females were in oestrus. Olfactory investigation and marking by males was more intense, however, in the presence of oestrous females or their scent. Marking appears to be primarily a non-agonistic, social behaviour which may be important in the social organization of this gregarious, nocturnal species.  相似文献

The alternative ideas that scent marking functions mainly in intrasexual competition or for attracting or stimulating mates were tested using data from a 16-year study of coypus, Myocastor coypus . Male coypus have a large anal gland, specialized for marking. Despite year-round breeding, the anal gland shows regular seasonal variation with marked enlargement in OctobeDecember. The analysis supported the hypothesis that this seasonal increase in glandular activity was linked to intrasexual competition: the size of the autumn peak was correlated with the increase in male numbers from the previous season and with the frequency of fighting scars. There were no relationships between gland size and any measures of the availability of mates. Increased scent marking may have been part of the response by resource-holding males to male recruits as these competed for existing territories. The timing of the autumn peak in marking and fighting may have been a response to the accumulation of non-resource-holding males over the summer (when recruitment exceeded mortality in the population) and to increasing accessibility within previously dense wetland habitats; together, these factors may cause a switch from scramble to despotic competition and an increase in scent marking to help keep the costs of resource defence within economic limits.  相似文献

Many mammal species adopt marking postures that elevate their scent deposits. The most extreme of these is handstand marking, in which an individual reverses against an upright object, flings its hind legs into the air above its back and balances bipedally on its fore feet. The resulting anogenital deposit is thus raised one full body length above ground level. It has been suggested that this energetically costly form of marking serves to provide conspecifics with information about the marker's body size and hence competitive ability. However, this explanation assumes that the height of an individuals’ deposit does reflect accurately its body size, an assumption that has never been tested in any hand‐standing species. This study investigated the relationship between body size and handstand mark height in a wild population of dwarf mongooses (Helogale parvula) in South Africa. We found that although body size and marking height were correlated positively for female dwarf mongooses, they were not related for males. Male dwarf mongooses (who are subject to intrasexual competition from outside their group) invested more heavily in anogenital range marking, marking at three times the female frequency and placing their deposits significantly higher than females (although they were not dimorphic). Males that were particularly vulnerable to rivals (i.e. those that were small for their age) tended to mark higher than more robust age‐mates, in keeping with the predictions of Adams & Mesterton‐Gibbons’ (1995, J. Theor. Biol.175, 405–421). model of deceptive threat communication. These findings suggest strongly that the height of anogenital scent deposits is of social significance to dwarf mongooses.  相似文献

House mice use urine marking for a variety of forms of social communication. Urine marking varies with dominance status; socially dominant male house mice urine mark more than those that are socially subordinate. Experiment I was designed to confirm this previous finding. Experiment II was designed to test whether urine marking, measured prior to testing males for aggression, could be used to predict social dominance. Mice were tested for urine marking in 20 cmx40 cm rectangular cages with filter paper below the wire mesh bottom of the cage. In Experiment I, groups of four males were tested in a round robin design to assess social dominance and were then placed individually in urine marking cages. Social dominance was a significant predictor of the number of 1 cm squares that contained urine marks, both with regard to interior squares and for perimeter squares in the test cage. In Experiment II, groups of four males were first tested individually in urine marking cages and then used for round robin aggressive encounters to assess social dominance. The number of interior squares with urine marks, and, to a lesser extent, the number of perimeter squares with urine marks, were both significant predictors of aggression scores and social dominance status. Being able to judge social dominance without having the mice encounter each other could be a valuable tool for future work; confounding effects on such parameters as hormone levels could be avoided while obtaining an estimate of male social dominance status.  相似文献

  • 1 Two natural populations of Ischnura graellsii were studied in north-west Spain by means of mark-release-recapture techniques. Recaptured males were a random sample of the original marked population with regard to date of marking. At O Rosal a greater proportion of young males than old males disappeared after marking; at Lourizán recaptured males were larger than unrecaptured ones.
  • 2 The number of matings observed in both populations showed great daily variation. Most of the variation is accounted for by climatic variables. Most males (56–65%) and many females (41–45%) were never observed to mate.
  • 3 Male LMS was highly correlated with lifespan in both populations. At O Rosal, male LMS was also positively correlated with body length, and mated males were larger than unmated males. This surprising result for a non-territorial species was due to the positive correlation between date of marking and size. There was a positive correlation between body size and mobility for males at O Rosal, but mobility was not correlated with male LMS.
  • 4 As predicted by sexual selection theory, the standardized variance in male LMS was greater than in female LMS. Variation in mature lifespan explained 16% of variance in male LMS at Lourizán and 28% at O Rosal.

Abstract. Individual marking has long been used in many fields of biology. However, capture–mark–recapture (CMR) studies are not evenly distributed among taxonomic groups, with most studies focusing on vertebrates. For example, a limited number of studies have been conducted in gastropods, in sharp contrast to their important role as biological models or exploited natural resources. The lack of standard, validated marking techniques certainly contributes to the limited use of CMR. In this article, we evaluate two fundamental requirements for a marking technique to be suitable, i.e., tag loss (two experiments) and impact on life-history traits (survival, growth, and fecundity, in three experiments). Five marking techniques for hard-shelled gastropods were tested in the freshwater snail Physa acuta (Pulmonata). The tag-loss rate per month was lower for glued plastic marks (0.01) than for paint marks (0.03–0.07), and the tag-loss rate varied among colors (gouache paint). Under laboratory conditions, the life-history traits were not significantly affected by marking. We thus recommend using glued plastic marks for long-term studies, and paint marks for mass marking, with double marking to account for tag-loss rate. Based on an extensive literature survey, we also review current CMR practices in gastropod studies and suggest general improvements that would prove useful in both this group and invertebrates in general.  相似文献

Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) display a territorial scent marking response associated with a ventral sebaceous gland. In males, both the gland and behavior are androgen dependent and hormone control of marking is delimited to the preoptic area. The present study examines the effects of eleven steroids, injected subcutaneously or implanted into the preoptic area, on territorial marking in adult male castrates. Steroid effects on ventral gland function are also described. The neural target cells that mediate marking respond to a narrower range of steroids than do peripheral target cells in the ventral gland. Testosterone appears to be the only endogenous steroid capable of eliciting marking in males. Other steroids which share molecular commonalities with testosterone (a 17β-hydroxyl group and a double bond involving carbon 4) also induce marking behavior. Central receptors may recognize the relevant endogenous steroid, testosterone, by these features.  相似文献

Social, olfactory, and oestrous cycle influences on the frequency of flank-marking and vaginal marking were studied in female hamsters. Vaginal marking was more frequent in the presence of males or their odours than females or their odours. Vaginal marking frequency was greatest the day before oestrus (day 4), intermediate on days 2 and 3, and zero on the oestrous day. The probable sexual advertisement functions of vaginal marking were discussed. In contrast, flank-marking by females was stimulated more by other female odours than by male odours. The frequency of flank-marking was elevated by agonistic encounters and was reduced by sexual encounters. Flank-marking seems to have functions related to functions of aggression among hamsters.  相似文献

Little is known about the hormonal control of behavior in marsupials. In the present study, the effects of castration and of testosterone or estradiol replacement therapy on scent marking and precopulatory behavior in male gray short-tailed oppossums (Monodelphis domestica) were examined. It was found that castration resulted in decreases in chest and flank/hip marking displayed by male gray opossums. Testosterone but not estradiol stimulated chest marking in castrates. Males treated with either estradiol or testosterone displayed more flank/hip marking than control males. Highest levels of female aggression toward males were seen when the males had received testosterone treatment. These findings are discussed with respect to similarities and differences between marsupials and eutherians in the neural metabolism of testosterone and the hormonal control of scent marking behavior.  相似文献

The correlates of chest-rubbing were studied in a captive group of woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha) to assess possible functions of territorial marking, spacing among competing groups or competing males, reproductive communication, marking to identify familiar environments, selfanointing, and displacement activity. Chest-rubbing was observed only in sexually mature monkeys and was a predominantly male activity. Females increased chest-rubbing when the original adult male died. Chest-rubbing by the first adult male was more common during the two months that he was mating with two females and at times when keepers were likely to be at the exhibit. The results suggest a reproductive function for chest-rubbing in both males and females. There is also support for chest-rubbing as a spacing activity.  相似文献

Summary Establishment and maintenance of foraging trails to an artificial nectar source by ten colonies ofParaponera davata (Fabr.) in Panama is reported. The first forager to locate the artificial nectar source was responsible for recruiting additional foragers and for marking trails to orient these foragers. More than half of the trail marking was performed by the first two ants to mark the path back to the colony, although up to 11 ants per colony per hour marked trails. The number of trail marks and the number of marking ants decreased through time, presumably as foragers learned the location of the artificial nectar source. Four categories of recruits were noted: markers, foragers, patrollers, and visitors.  相似文献
