The Tamesí molly, Poecilia latipunctata, has a very limited biogeographical range in northeast Mexico. This area is nested within the ranges of the Atlantic molly, Poecilia mexicana, and the unisexual Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa. Based on morphology, especially fin shape, the Tamesí molly has been considered to be a "short-fin" molly. We describe the courtship sequence of P. latipunctata. The courtship clearly places the species into the clade of "long-fin" mollies, a finding that corroborates earlier studies based on nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA. All three species live together in certain habitats. This renders P. latipunctata a potential host species for the sperm-dependent, unisexual Amazon molly. Using behavioural tests, we demonstrate that P. latipunctata males actually copulate with Amazon mollies, despite a pronounced preference for conspecific females. In laboratory experiments P. latipunctata males are capable of triggering embryogenesis in P. formosa females. Field observations support the hypothesis that P. latipunctata is a third host species for P. formosa, indicating that the Amazon molly effectively exploits all available host species for its gynogenetic mode of reproduction. Breeding experiments with the gynogenetic Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa , proved that mosaicism, detected by flow cytometry with the fluorescent dye DAPI was restricted to the soma, and that gynogenetic reproduction was maintained by the offspring. Potential pathways for how mosaicism might have arisen in P. formosa are discussed.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) encode molecules that control immune recognition and are highly polymorphic in most vertebrates. The remarkable polymorphisms at MHC loci may be maintained by selection from parasites, sexual selection, or both. If asexual species show equal (or higher) levels of polymorphisms at MHC loci as sexual ones, this would mean that sexual selection is not necessary to explain the high levels of diversity at MHC loci. In this study, we surveyed the MHC diversity of the asexual amazon molly (Poecilia formosa) and one of its sexual ancestors, the sailfin molly (P. latipinna), which lives in the same habitat. We found that the asexual molly has polymorphic MHC loci despite its clonal reproduction, yet not as polymorphic as the sexual species. Although the nucleotide diversity was similar between the asexual and sexual species, the sexual species exhibited a greater genotypic diversity compared to the asexual one from the same habitats. Within‐genome diversity was similar for MHC class I loci, but for class IIB, the sexual species had higher diversity compared to the asexual — despite the hybrid origins and higher levels of heterozygosity at microsatellite loci in the asexual species. The level of positive selection appears to be similar between the two species, which suggests that these polymorphisms are maintained by selection. Thus, our findings do not allow us to rule out the sexual selection hypothesis for the evolution of MHC diversity, and although the sexual fish has higher levels of MHC‐diversity compared to the asexual species, this may be due to differences in demography, parasites, or other factors, rather than sexual selection.  相似文献

We describe the first microsatellite loci for the gynogenetic Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, an all‐female species arisen through hybridization of the bisexual species Poecilia mexicana and Poecilia latipinna. The loci showed one to six alleles and an expected heterozygosity between zero and 0.75. As expected with parthenogenetic inheritance, most loci were either constantly homozygous (five loci) or constantly heterozygous (eight loci). For six loci, both heterozygotes and homozygotes occurred. This and the fact that some loci only showed alleles of one of the ancestral species could indicate genome homogenization through mitotic gene conversion. Our new loci conformed to the hybrid origin of Amazon molly and are also applicable to both ancestral bisexual species.  相似文献

All‐female ‘species’ of fish have been shown to be great models in ecological and evolutionary studies because of the insights they can provide into the origin and evolution of asexuality, the ecology of hybrids, associations between genotype and environment, and the maintenance of sex. Gynogenetic organisms that evolved from sexual ancestors, and combine the disadvantageous traits from sexuality and asexuality, have long baffled evolutionary biologists trying to understand their origin and persistence with their sympatric sexual counterparts. In this issue, a new study using an integrated molecular phylogenetic and classical genetic approach has uncovered compelling evidence regarding the obscure asexual origin of the Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa. By performing an extensive phylogeographic analysis, Stöck et al. (2010) provide evidence that the Amazon molly arose only once within its history, with monophyly being strongly supported by mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite analyses. This result, combined with an elaborate failed attempt to resynthesize the lineage, suggests that vertebrate gynogens such as the Amazon molly are not rare because they are at a disadvantage to their sexual counterparts, but because the genomic conditions under which they arise are rare. Organisms that apparently combine the disadvantages of both sexuality and asexuality remain difficult to understand from both an ecological and an evolutionary perspective, and Stöck et al. (2010) highlight several outstanding important questions. Nonetheless, given that we now have a better knowledge of the origin and history of this unique ‘species’, this should allow researchers to better understand how these frozen F1’s can persist amidst the masterpiece of nature.  相似文献

The parasite communities of two molly species, the sexual Poecilia latipinna and the clonal Poecilia formosa , were investigated in four populations using a novel method applicable under field conditions. In two native populations from south Texas and two introduced populations from central Texas, four species of microparasites and eight species of macroparasites were recorded. Virtually no differences in the parasite diversity and species composition could be detected between the populations. Mollies from south Texas had a higher individual parasitization index of macroparasites. There was a negative correlation between the relative number of oocytes in gravid females and their individual macroparasite load.  相似文献

That trade-offs result from the allocation of limited resources is a central concept of life history evolution. We quantified trade-offs between sexual and clonal reproduction in the aquatic plant, Butomus umbellatus, by experimentally manipulating sexual investment in two distinct nutrient environments. Increasing seed production caused a significant but nonlinear trade-off. Pollinating half of all flowers strongly reduced clonal bulbil production, but pollinating the remaining flowers did not cause any further trade-off. Trade-offs were not stronger under low nutrient conditions that clearly limited plant growth. Experimentally induced trade-offs were not reflected in negative phenotypic correlations between sexual and clonal allocation among plants within eight populations grown in a uniform greenhouse environment. Diminishing effects of increased sexual allocation plus a lack of accord between experimental manipulations and phenotypic correlations suggest that trade-offs between sexual and clonal reproduction are unlikely to constrain the evolution of reproductive strategy in this species.  相似文献

Aim To understand the relative contributions of environmental factors, dispersal limitations and the presence of sperm donors in determining the distribution of the Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa), a sperm‐dependent unisexual fish species of hybrid origin. To explore niche similarities and/or differences between the hybrid and parental species. To evaluate whether large‐scale abiotic factors can explain a successful introduction of both P. formosa and Poecilia latipinna. Location South‐east United States, Mexico and Central America. Methods We used abiotic variables in ecological niche modelling (ENM) to identify regions with suitable conditions for the presence of the Amazon molly and its two parental species (P. latipinna and Poecilia mexicana). We also used a recently developed metric to calculate the degree of niche overlap between the hybrid and its parental species. Results ENM produced highly significant models [all area under the curve (AUC) > 0.99 for the three species]. Annual mean temperature and minimum temperature of the coldest month were the variables that best explained the distribution of the Amazon molly. With the exception of south Florida, few areas beyond the known distribution of the species were predicted to have suitable environmental conditions. The hybrid species niche overlaps partially with the parental species. However, given the available data, it is neither more similar nor more different than expected by chance. Main conclusions Two different processes are acting to limit the distribution of P. formosa. At the northern limit, although a sperm donor species is present further north, suitable environmental conditions are absent from nearby locations. At the southern limit, a sperm donor species is present and areas with good environmental conditions are present at nearby locations, suggesting that dispersal ability is the limiting factor. We found that the hybrid species overlaps in a similar way with both parental species while still having its own niche identity. This result may be explained by the fact that hybrid species inherit characteristics of two ecologically divergent species, which can result in intermediate or even transgressive phenotypes. These results support recent work on the role of hybridization in diversification.  相似文献

Asexual reproduction in vertebrates is rare and generally considered an evolutionary dead end. Asexuality is often associated with polyploidy, and several hypotheses have been put forward to explain this relationship. So far, it remains unclear whether polyploidization in asexual organisms is a frequent or a rare event. Here we present a field study on the gynogenetic Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa. We used multilocus fingerprints and microsatellites to investigate the genetic diversity in 339 diploid and 55 triploid individuals and in 25 P. mexicana, its sexual host. Although multilocus DNA fingerprints found high clonal diversity in triploids, microsatellites revealed only two very similar clones in the triploids. Phylogenetic analysis of microsatellite data provided evidence for a monophyletic origin of the triploid clones of P. formosa. In addition, shared alleles within the triploid clones between the triploid and diploid genotypes and between asexual and sexual lineages indicate a recent origin of triploid clones in Poecilia formosa.  相似文献

In the weedy plant species Allium vineale (wild garlic), individuals may simultaneously produce sexually and asexually derived offspring, by seed and bulbils, respectively. In this study, genetic and genotypic diversity was determined in samples from 14 European A. vineale populations using nuclear (RAPD) and cytoplasmic (PCR-RFLP of cpDNA) markers to investigate the importance of the different reproductive modes. In the whole sample, 77 nuclear multilocus genotypes and four chloroplast haplotypes (chlorotypes) were found. Populations exhibited a high degree of subdivision for nuclear and cytoplasmic markers as estimated from hierarchical F-statistics; at the same time, identical chlorotypes could be found in populations separated by large distances. Genotypic diversity was significantly lower than expected under free recombination in almost all populations, indicating that recruitment into populations is mostly by asexually produced offspring. Nevertheless, within each chlorotype, the distribution of markers from pairs of nuclear loci was incompatible with a purely clonal structure, suggesting that many multilocus genotypes have originated by sexual recombination rather than by mutation within asexual lineages. It is argued that the weedy habit of A. vineale is likely to have favored bulbil reproduction, whereas sexually generated genotypes may have facilitated local adaptation during the species' expansion across Europe.  相似文献

Seasonal dynamics of the abundance, sexual reproduction and genetic architecture in a Daphnia hyalina-galeata hybrid complex were studied in the large and deep Lake Constance. We found evidence for the occurrence of first and second order hybridization. Our study revealed strong differences between the parental species not only regarding their seasonal dynamics, genetic architecture and diversity, but also their sexual reproductive behaviour. The overwintering D. hyalina showed low genetic diversity, no genetic differentiation during the season, and reproduced sexually in autumn, whereas D. galeata reached higher levels of genetic diversity, reproduced sexually in early summer, and exhibited changes in genetic structure during the season, but was only present from spring to autumn. However, in both species sexual reproduction was a rare event, and daphnids, including hybrids, reproduced predominantly asexually. This allows long-term persistence of hybrids as well without continuing hybridization events. Within all variables studied, F1 and F2 hybrids showed an intermediate pattern, whereas proposed backcross hybrids were more similar to their respective parentals. These differences in phenotype as well as significant differences in pairwise Fst values between parentals suggest that gene flow seems to be relatively low in the Lake Constance hybrid system. We found evidence for unidirectional introgression by backcrossing from D. galeata to D. hyalina and found a decrease in at least one of the proposed introgressed alleles in the hyalina-backcross while the season progressed. Our findings suggest allochronic differentiation within this hybrid population and different microevolutionary trajectories of the parental species, which will be discussed in the light of the ongoing reoligotrophication process of Lake Constance.  相似文献

The basal hypothesis discussed here is the idea that brain architecture could be plastic on a very basal, genetic level due to sexual recombination and reassortment of alleles of genes related to brain development, e.g., neuronal cell adhesion molecules (NCAMs) and others. The role of sexual reassortment leads the study of brain development, species behavior and intelligence to a new version of the so-called “Red Queen Hypothesis”: using the mechanism described here, a kind of runaway selection mechanism seems to arise. Even if NCAMs are almost constant within an individual, they seem to act very differently at the population level and so the role of reassorting polymorphic NCAM- (and other) genes gets particularly clear. If several NCAM-NCAM combinations cause extreme behavior and intelligence variability in a population, these combinations also represent a use of sexual selection. This mechanism of NCAM allele assortment seems to be important for the process of speciation by mutual selection of individuals. Therefore NCAM variants and their associated behaviors are thought to be important for the development of intelligence, in that they promote the attraction of individuals with already high intelligence, leading to the speciation of super-intelligent groups.  相似文献

Species of Epichloë (Ascomycota: Clavicipitaceae), which infect grasses, maintain an obligate symbiotic relationship with flies of the genus Botanophila (Diptera: Anthomyiidae). Sexual reproduction of the fungus usually requires a visit by Botanophila, which serves to ‘pollinate’ the fungus with spermatia of the opposite mating type; the flies in turn deposit their eggs on fungal tissues upon which the larvae feed. For a molecular phylogenetic study, a total of 108 fly larvae were collected from 10 different Epichloë species on various grasses in Europe and North America. Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene (COII) detected six distinct Botanophila taxa that were associated with Epichloë. Three were restricted to samples from Europe, two to samples from North America, and one was present on both continents. In North America the common taxon [identified as Botanophila lobata (Collin)] was found on Epichloë hosts of native grasses and on Epichloë typhina (Pers.: Fr.) Tul. and Epichloë festucae Leuchtm., Schardl and M.R. Siegel of the introduced grasses Dactylis glomerata L. and Festuca rubra L., respectively. In a maximum likelihood phylogram, one of the American taxa was most basal, while the other was nested within the European taxa, suggesting that European and American taxa of Epichloë-associated Botanophila spp. may not have separate origins. Analyses of the fly populations further indicated that up to four different Botanophila taxa can be present at a single location. On taxon level there was no specificity of flies for Epichloë host species (except taxon 6 that was found only on Epichloë glyceriae Schardl & Leuchtmann), although several taxa appeared to prefer some hosts over others. Comparison of molecular phylogenetic relationships of Botanophila species with those of the associated Epichloë hosts did not suggest co-evolution of the fungus and the fly. Thus, associations between Botanophila flies and Epichloë hosts may have arisen independently more than once.  相似文献

The effects of enhanced ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm: UVR) on the fecundity of Acropora cervicornis were measured in field-transplanted colonies from 20 m to 1 m depth and vice versa at La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Fecundity was estimated from histological sections made from tissue samples obtained at different time intervals during the experimental period (March - August 2003). All colonies transplanted from 20 m to 1 m showed a 100% reduction in gonads per mesentery per polyp one month after transplantation, while those transplanted from 1 m to 20 m did not show any significant reduction in fecundity throughout the experimental period. The latter colonies did show however, a delay in the spawning times by releasing their gamete bundles approximately two-three weeks after the controls at 1 m and two months after the controls at 20 m suggesting an induced response as a consequence of changes in their daily light cycle due to less radiation (PAR and UVR) available at 20 m compared to 1 m. Control colonies at 20 m spawned after the full moon of June 2003, while the controls at 1 m spawned 5-6 days after the full moon of July 2003. While a possible reabsorption of the gametes occurred in A. cervicornis colonies transplanted from 20 m to 1 m, the expulsion of these gametes due to the sudden stress caused by the transplantation is not discarded. The results suggest that sudden increases in UVR can completely stop sexual reproduction in ramose broadcasting coral species, which in turn can affect the dominance of the species and the composition and structure of shallow reef environments.  相似文献

According to sympatric speciation theory, adaptation to different host plants is expected to pleiotropically lead to assortative mating, an important factor in the reduction of gene flow between the diverging subpopulations. This scenario predicts mating on and oviposition preference for the respective hosts in both the diverging subpopulations and recently originated species. Here, we test both predictions in the oligophagous Yponomeuta padellus (L.) and the monophagous Yponomeuta cagnagellus (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), two closely related small ermine moth species from the western European clade of Yponomeuta for which speciation in sympatry has been proposed. Mating location and adult host acceptance were evaluated under both semi-field (in a large outdoor cage with a choice of host and non-host plants) and field conditions. In the semi-field experiment, only Y. cagnagellus showed some preference for mating on its own host (16% of all mating pairs) over non-host plants (3% of all mating pairs). However, in both species, more than 80% of the mating pairs were not formed on a plant but instead on the cage itself. Further examination of the mating site of Y. cagnagellus in the field revealed no preference for host plants over non-host plants in the two consecutive years of observation. Yponomeuta padellus females, collected from and reared on Prunus spinosa L. (Rosaceae), showed an oviposition preference for the alternative host Crataegus monogyna Jacq. (Rosaceae) in the semi-field experiment. We thus found no evidence that host-plant fidelity (in terms of mating site) has been the driving force in the speciation process of these Yponomeuta species, nor did we find evidence of host race formation in the tested population of the oligophagous Y. padellus .  相似文献
