Abstract. The time-course of behavioural phase change was investigated in nymphs of Schistocerca gregaria , using logistic regression analysis of behaviour recorded in a standard assay. Gregarization occurred very rapidly. Solitary-reared nymphs became markedly gregarious in behaviour within 1-4h of being placed in a crowd. These insects re-solitarized equally quickly if removed from the crowd. Crowd-reared locusts also solitarized within l-4h, but this effect was not complete. Results indicate that, while behavioural gregarization is maximal within a few hours of crowding, solitarization is a two-stage process, changing rapidly at first, then more slowly as a function of the period of previous crowding. 相似文献

Abstract. In previous studies we used logistic regression analysis to quantify the change in behavioural phase state of Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) nymphs subjected to variations in population density. Such work involved restricting insects in small containers either alone or in a crowd. In the present paper we have shown that the fine-scale distribution of food plants, perches and favourable microclimatic sites influences the spatial distribution of locusts, both in the laboratory and under semi-field conditions. When multiple resource sites were provided, solitarious locusts tended to disperse and behavioural gregarization was inhibited. However, provision of only a single site promoted congregation, overcoming the tendency of solitarious insects to avoid each other, and led to behavioural gregarization. The time-course and extent of this response was fully consistent with our earlier experiments using enforced crowding. We suggest that such quantitative, experimental studies of the effects of environmental microstructure on behaviour may yield fundamental insights into the dynamics of plague formation in the desert locust. 相似文献

Abstract Detailed aspects of the transition from the solitarious to the gregarious phase in the framework of locust ecology are undoubtedly most important for understanding locust phase polyphenism. Nevertheless, due to obvious difficulties in studying the solitarious phase in nature, such information is limited and mostly available from research carried out under laboratory conditions. In the current study, we examined the dispersal patterns of newly hatched locust nymphs in a laboratory setup that simulated seminatural conditions. This was carried out with no previous manipulation of the nymphs other than controlling their parental density. We comparatively tested the spatial distribution of newly hatched nymphs on perches located at different ranges within an emergence arena, and the expected Poisson (random) distribution. Hatchlings were found to disperse among the perches in a pattern significantly different from that expected by random. Irrespective of their parents’ phase, the observed distributions of all nymphs were clearly clumped, similar or close to those expected for gregarious locusts. It seems that rather than emerging with a parentally derived and predetermined phase, hatchlings have an independent default or innate behavioral state, which reflects at least tolerance if not attraction to conspecifics. The typical phase behavior may later become dominant under the appropriate environmental conditions. These results imply novel perspectives on locust phase transformation, which contribute to our understanding of the formation of locust crowds under field conditions. These should be considered in any rationale for developing a preventative management strategy of locust populations. 相似文献

Abstract. The time-course of behavioural change in response to crowding and re-isolation was investigated in adults of Schistocerca gregaria Forskål (Orthoptera, Acrididae) using logistic regression analysis. Crowding solitary-reared adults for a period of 4 h caused them to behave similarly to crowd-reared insects, with their becoming much more active and moving towards rather than away from a stimulus group of locusts. Responsiveness to crowding was greatest in young adults. The behaviour acquired after 48 h of crowding was lost within 1 day of re-isolation. Although experience by solitary-reared adults of crowding for 48 h had only transitory effects on their own behaviour, there was also a long-term influence on the behaviour of their offspring. The strength of this effect was dependent on the age at which adults experienced crowding, increasing in a graded manner with adult age, and hence the recency of crowding before oviposition. Parents crowded at a late stage in the reproductive cycle yielded hatchlings which behaved indistinguishably from those from crowd-reared adults. Such an effect is consistent with the idea that females, through their previous experience of crowding, are effectively predicting the probability that their offspring will emerge into a high-density population, and predisposing their hatchlings' behaviour accordingly. 相似文献

A yellow protein from abdominal cuticle of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, has been purified and its amino acid sequence determined. The yellow color comes from bound carotene, the protein is only deposited in the epidermis and cuticle of male locusts during their sexual maturation, and the deposition is dependent upon a sufficiently high titer of juvenile hormone. The sequence of the protein is atypical for a cuticular protein, but it has some similarity to a putative juvenile hormone binding protein from Manduca sexta. It is suggested that the protein is involved in the transport of carotenes from internal tissues to epidermis and cuticle of the locust. 相似文献

Abstract The optomotor yaw response of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.), was investigated under open- and closed-loop conditions. When flying tethered in the centre of a vertically striped hollow sphere, the polarity of response of the locust was always the same as the stimulus. The response, therefore, appears suitable to stabilize body posture against passive rotations around the yaw-axis in free flight. Responses were induced by contrast frequencies up to 150 Hz with a maximum of amplitude at about 20 Hz. The characteristic curve, measured between 0.3 and 160 Hz, is widened up towards higher frequencies as compared with those of bees and flies.

The amplitude of modulation not only varied greatly between individuals but also changed with the same visual stimulus in the course of an experiment. The responses of (i) groups of crowd-reared mature males of desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria to a choice of two columns of air, one permeated with different concentrations of phenylacetonitrile (PAN), the major component of gregarious-phase male-produced pheromone, and the other untreated, and (ii) individual crowd-reared mature males of the insect to varying concentration gradients of PAN, were studied in two different types of arena. In the choice assay, locusts preferred to be within PAN-permeated air column at low relative doses of the pheromone, but away from PAN at high relative doses. In the second assay, individual locusts were arrested close to PAN source at low PAN concentration gradients, but away from the source at high concentration gradients. The results are consistent with two reported releaser functions of the adult male-released pheromone that are dependent on different sensory thresholds: arrestment and cohesion at lower relative concentrations and male-male homosexual avoidance at higher relative concentrations. 相似文献

Few population genetics studies have been carried out on major locust species. In particular, an understanding of the population genetic structure of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, is lacking. We isolated and characterized eight polymorphic microsatellite loci in C. terminifera, and described experimental conditions for polymerase chain reaction multiplexing and genotyping these loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 11 to 29 and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.797 to 0.977. One locus was found to be X-linked. Results of cross-taxon amplification tests are reported in four species of the Oedipodinae subfamily. 相似文献

Abstract.Recordings from antennal olfactory receptor neurones in young adult Schistocerca gregaria Forskål (Orthoptera: Acrididae) showed that behaviourally important odours are detected by receptor neurones present in morphologically identifiable sensillum types. Both nymph- and adult-produced aggregation pheromones activate receptor neurones housed in sensilla basiconica. The receptor neurones in this sensillum type in solitary-reared locusts display a higher sensitivity to aggregation pheromones and to some other behaviourally relevant odours than the same type of neurones in gregarious locusts. Receptor neurones present in sensilla coeloconica respond to green leaf odours, organic acids, and nymphal odours but are inhibited by mature adult-produced aggregation pheromones. Receptor neurones housed in sensilla trichodea respond to a possible sex pheromone. No phase differences were found in the response of coeloconic- or trichoid-associated receptor neurones. 相似文献

- 1 The locust displayed clear preferences in the ranking of five possible food plants: wheat > barley =Cypeius alternifolia > chives > lemon grass.
- 2 In two-species stands of constant numerical density, the locust grazed selectively on the less-favoured plant when it was relatively less abundant.
- 3 The behavioural mechanism of selective grazing was a change in the readiness to eat a plant as its relative frequency changed: i.e. the consumption/encounter ratio rose as relative density fell.
- 4 With the exception of Cyperus, which nutritionally is below chives, the preference ranking matched nutritional ranking as estimated by rearing-success on single plant species.
- 5 It is suggested that such negative frequency-dependent selection may be a common strategy for polyphagous herbivores as it permits a wide dietary intake without hazards from potentially toxic foods.

Changes in haemolymph octopamine levels associated with food deprivation in the locust, Schistocerca gregaria 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT. Levels of octopamine in the haemolymph and locomotor activity have been measured over 24 h in fed and food-deprived adult male locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål). Locusts are predominantly diurnal, the locomotor activity of individuals with continuous access to food was higher during the photophase. The basal level of octopamine in haemolymph sampled during the first quarter of the light cycle was 7.8±1.1 pg/μl (51 nm). Depriving locusts of food at the start of the photophase for 9 h caused an increase in both the speed of movement and total activity compared to fed individuals. There was a corresponding increase in the haemolymph octopamine concentration which continued for as long as the insects were unable to feed, reaching a concentration of 20.7 ± 3.7 pg/μl (135 nM). While declining, the levels of octopamine remained higher in fed locusts for up to 4 h after replacing the food. The results are discussed in relation to the regulation of feeding behaviour and a proposed neurohormonal role of octopamine in insects. 相似文献

In order to understand the connectivity of neuronal networks, their constituent neurons should ideally be studied in a common framework. Since morphological data from physiologically characterized and stained neurons usually arise from different individual brains, this can only be performed in a virtual standardized brain that compensates for interindividual variability. The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is an insect species used widely for the analysis of olfactory and visual signal processing, endocrine functions, and neural networks controlling motor output. To provide a common multi-user platform for neural circuit analysis in the brain of this species, we have generated a standardized three-dimensional brain of this locust. Serial confocal images from whole-mount locust brains were used to reconstruct 34 neuropil areas in ten brains. For standardization, we compared two different methods: an iterative shape-averaging (ISA) procedure by using affine transformations followed by iterative nonrigid registrations, and the Virtual Insect Brain (VIB) protocol by using global and local rigid transformations followed by local nonrigid transformations. Both methods generated a standard brain, but for different applications. Whereas the VIB technique was designed to visualize anatomical variability between the input brains, the purpose of the ISA method was the opposite, i.e., to remove this variability. A novel individually labeled neuron, connecting the lobula to the midbrain and deutocerebrum, has been registered into the ISA atlas and demonstrates its usefulness and accuracy for future analysis of neural networks. Quantifying genetic kinship and parentage is critical to understanding the adaptive consequences of sociality. To measure fitness in a species with variable group structure, we isolated 14 microsatellite loci from Octodon degus, a semi-fossorial rodent endemic to Chile. The number of alleles per locus ranged from four to 14. Thirteen loci were in Hardy-Weinberg proportions, with values of observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.550 to 0.950. A yellow lipoprotein was isolated and purified from haemolymph of desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria Forskal, by precipitation at low ionic concentration and by gel filtration. Sephadex G-200 resolved haemolymph into five protein peaks. First peak was of lipoprotein with molecular weight of 501,000 +/- 7000 (n = 3) and on electrophoresis, it separated into three bands. Nine highly polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from AC- and GATA-repeat microsatellite enrichment DNA libraries in the rock carp, Procypris rabaudi (Tchang). The number of alleles for these loci ranged from eight to 18 in tested individuals. Polymorphism information content ranged from 0.712 to 0.908 with an average of 0.837. Average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.719 and 0.870, respectively. Abstract The results of aktograph experiments suggest that S. gregaria is primarily day‐active although its circadian clock can, to some extent, be synchronized by changes in both light and temperature. Low temperatures exert a threshold effect on activity. The nycthemeral rhythm of the desert locust is feeble in LD 12:12, even with fluctuating temperatures. This, is probably of adaptive significance. It certainly accords with the plastic and opportune nature of locust behaviour, upon which survival depends under the unpredictable conditions of the desert climate. For the insect must always be ready to exploit temporary and irregular amelorations of its harsh, arid environment. The desert locust, therefore, cannot afford to adopt rigid rhythms or behaviour patterns that might cause it to lose the benefits of a chance shower or to miss the temporary appearance of green grass. It is argued that the persistence of a rhythm fora short while could be due to an endogenous ‘clock’ or to an exogenous periodicity that continues briefly in constant conditions. It has been shown experimentally, however, that although locusts do not exhibit a marked periodicity under field conditions they, nevertheless, possess good circadian ‘clocks’ whose disclosure can be elicited by subjecting the insects to unnatural light‐dark régimes. 相似文献

SchistoFLRFamide (PDVDHVFLRF-NH2) is one of the major endogenous neuropeptides of the FMRF-amide family found in the nervous system of the locust,Schistocerca gregaria. To gain insights into the potential physiological roles of this neuropeptide we have examined the distribution of SchistoFLRFamide-like immunoreactivity in the ventral nervous system of adult locusts by use of a newly developed N-terminally specific antibody. SchistoFLRFamide-like immunoreactivity in the ventral nerve cord is found in a subgroup of the neurones that are immunoreactive to an antiserum raised against bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP). In the suboesophageal ganglion three groups of cells stain, including one pair of large posterior ventral cells. These cells are the same size, in the same location in the ganglion and have the same branching pattern as a pair of BPP immunoreactive cells known to innervate the heart and retrocerebral glandular complex of the locust. In the thoracic and abdominal ganglia two and three sets of cells, respectively, stain with both the SchistoFLRFamide and BPP antisera. In the abdominal ganglia the immunoreactive cells project via the median nerves to the intensely immunoreactive neurohaemal organs. 相似文献

Abstract. Tethered flying locusts were stimulated either by a periodic grating or by a spotted 'swarm-simulating' pattern moving horizontally, parallel to their longitudinal body axis within their lateral visual fields. The direction of movement of the pattern was changed periodically from progressive to regressive and vice versa.
Both kinds of patterns induced a correlated modulation of yaw-torque and thrust. The two measured flight parameters were modulated independently of each other. Each parameter either increased with progressive and decreased with regressive pattern motion or vice versa. The characteristic curves of thrust and yaw-torque responses - i.e. response amplitude versus contrast frequency resp. angular velocity – measured upon stimulation with the periodic grating between 2 and 70 Hz were at a maximum at 10 Hz and decreased at higher and lower contrast frequencies. The shape of the curves was nearly identical. The characteristic curves measured upon stimulation with the 'swarm-simulating' pattern between 60 and 1500o s-1 could be simulated using the spatial wavelength content of the pattern and the characteristic curves for periodic gratings.
Therefore, we suggest that the speed and direction of locusts' flight result from the optomotor effectiveness of the pattern image formed by the neighbouring individuals under free flight. The measured responses would thus contribute to the common orientation of groups of locusts within a migrating swarm and thus to swarm cohesion. 相似文献
