Greenhouse gas emissions from a constructed wetland in southern Sweden   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper investigates the greenhouse gas emissions from a Swedish wetland, constructed to decrease nutrient content in sewage treatment water. To evaluate the effect of the construction in terms of greenhouse gas emissions we carried out ecosystem-atmosphere flux measurements of CO2, CH4 and N2O using a closed chamber technique. To evaluate the importance of vascular plant species composition to gas emissions we distributed the measurement plots over the three dominating plant species at the field site, i.e., Typha latifolia, Phragmites australis and Juncus effusus. The fluxes of CO2 (total respiration), CH4 and N2O from vegetated plots ranged from 1.39 to 77.5 (g m−2 day−1), −377 to 1387 and −13.9 to 31.5 (mg m−2 day−1) for CO2, CH4 and N2O, respectively. Presence of vascular plants lead as expected to significantly higher total respiration rates compared with un-vegetated control plots. Furthermore, we found that the emission rates of N2O and CH4 was affected by presence of vascular plants and tended to be species-specific. We assessed the integrated greenhouse warming effect of the emissions using a Global Warming Potential over a 100-year horizon (GWP100) and it corresponded to 431 kg CO2 equivalents m−2 day−1. Assuming a 7-month season with conditions similar to the study period this is equal to 90 tonnes of CO2 equivalents annually. N2O emissions were responsible for one third of the estimated total greenhouse forcing. Furthermore, we estimated that the emission from the forested bog that was the precursor land to Magle constructed wetland amounted to 18.6 tonnes of CO2 equivalents annually. Hence, the constructed wetland has increased annual greenhouse gas emissions by 71.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalents for the whole area. Our findings indicate that management processes in relation to wetland construction projects must consider the primary function of the wetland in decreasing eutrophication, in relation to other positive aspects on for instance plant and animal life and recreation as well as possible negative climatic aspects of increased emissions of CH4 and N2O.  相似文献

To evaluate the impact of N placement depth and no-till (NT) practice on the emissions of NO, N2O, CH4 and CO2 from soils, we conducted two N placement experiments in a long-term tillage experiment site in northeastern Colorado in 2004. Trace gas flux measurements were made 2–3 times per week, in zero-N fertilizer plots that were cropped continuously to corn (Zea mays L.) under conventional-till (CT) and NT. Three N placement depths, replicated four times (5, 10 and 15 cm in Exp. 1 and 0, 5 and 10 cm in Exp. 2, respectively) were used. Liquid urea–ammonium nitrate (UAN, 224 kg N ha−1) was injected to the desired depth in the CT- or NT-soils in each experiment. Mean flux rates of NO, N2O, CH4 and CO2 ranged from 3.9 to 5.2 μg N m−2 h−1, 60.5 to 92.4 μg N m−2 h−1, −0.8 to 0.5 μg C m−2 h−1, and 42.1 to 81.7 mg C m−2 h−1 in both experiments, respectively. Deep N placement (10 and 15 cm) resulted in lower NO and N2O emissions compared with shallow N placement (0 and 5 cm) while CH4 and CO2 emissions were not affected by N placement in either experiment. Compared with N placement at 5 cm, for instance, averaged N2O emissions from N placement at 10 cm were reduced by more than 50% in both experiments. Generally, NT decreased NO emission and CH4 oxidation but increased N2O emissions compared with CT irrespective of N placement depths. Total net global warming potential (GWP) for N2O, CH4 and CO2 was reduced by deep N placement only in Exp. 1 but was increased by NT in both experiments. The study results suggest that deep N placement (e.g., 10 cm) will be an effective option for reducing N oxide emissions and GWP from both fertilized CT- and NT-soils.  相似文献

The main focus of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil moisture and temperature on temporal variation of N2O, CO2 and CH4 soil-atmosphere exchange at a primary seasonal tropical rainforest (PF) site in Southwest China and to compare these fluxes with fluxes from a secondary forest (SF) and a rubber plantation (RP) site. Agroforestry systems, such as rubber plantations, are increasingly replacing primary and secondary forest systems in tropical Southwest China and thus effect the N2O emission in these regions on a landscape level. The mean N2O emission at site PF was 6.0 ± 0.1 SE μg N m−2 h−1. Fluxes of N2O increased from <5 μg N m−2 h−1 during dry season conditions to up to 24.5 μg N m−2 h−1 with re-wetting of the soil by the onset of first rainfall events. Comparable fluxes of N2O were measured in the SF and RP sites, where mean N2O emissions were 7.3 ± 0.7 SE μg N m−2 h−1 and 4.1 ± 0.5 SE μg N m−2 h−1, respectively. The dependency of N2O fluxes on soil moisture levels was demonstrated in a watering experiment, however, artificial rainfall only influenced the timing of N2O emission peaks, not the total amount of N2O emitted. For all sites, significant positive correlations existed between N2O emissions and both soil moisture and soil temperature. Mean CH4 uptake rates were highest at the PF site (−29.5 ± 0.3 SE μg C m−2 h−1), slightly lower at the SF site (−25.6 ± 1.3 SE μg C m−2 h−1) and lowest for the RP site (−5.7 ± 0.5 SE μg C m−2 h−1). At all sites, CH4 uptake rates were negatively correlated with soil moisture, which was also reflected in the lower uptake rates measured in the watering experiment. In contrast to N2O emissions, CH4 uptake did not significantly correlate with soil temperature at the SF and RP sites, and only weakly correlated at the PF site. Over the 2 month measurement period, CO2 emissions at the PF site increased significantly from 50 mg C m−2 h−1 up to 100 mg C m−2 h−1 (mean value 68.8 ± 0.8 SE mg C m−2 h−1), whereas CO2 emissions at the SF and RP site where quite stable and varied only slightly around mean values of 38.0 ± 1.8 SE mg C m−2 h−1 (SF) and 34.9 ± 1.1 SE mg C m−2 h−1 (RP). A dependency of soil CO2 emissions on changes in soil water content could be demonstrated for all sites, thus, the watering experiment revealed significantly higher CO2 emissions as compared to control chambers. Correlation of CO2 emissions with soil temperature was significant at the PF site, but weak at the SF and not evident at the RP site. Even though we demonstrated that N and C trace gas fluxes significantly varied on subdaily and daily scales, weekly measurements would be sufficient if only the sink/ source strength of non-managed tropical forest sites needs to be identified.  相似文献

Methane emissions from rice paddies were quantified by using an automatic field system stationed in Zhejiang Province, one of the centres for rice cultivation in China. The data set showed pronouned interannual variations over 5 consecutive vegetation periods; by computing average values of all experimental plots the annual emissions were 177 g CH4 m−2 yr−1 in 1987, 50 g CH4 m−2 yr−1 in 1988, and 187 g CH4 m−2 yr−1 in 1989. The field preparations encompassed 4 different treatments: (1) no fertilizers, (2) mineral fertilizer (KCl, K2SO4), (3) organic manure (rape seeed cake, animal manure), (4) mineral fertilizer plus organic manure. The methane emission rates of the different fertilizer treatments did not show significant differences. The mean emission rates, calculated over the entire observation period of 5 seasons, were 30.4 mg CH4 m−2 h−1 (non-fertilized plot) and 28.3 mg CH4 m−2 h−1 (mineral fertilizers). These values indicate a high level of methane production even without additional input of organic material into the rice-soils. In the other plots, the organic fertilizers were added once per vegetation period at app. 1 t fresh weight per ha, a relatively low application rate by agronomical standards. The mean emission rates were 35.1 mg CH4 m−2 h−1 when manure was applied as sole fertilizer and 27.5 mg CH4 m−2 h−1 when applied jointly with potassium fertilizers. Based on the results of this study we estimate a range of 18–28 Tg CH4 yr−1 as the total methane emission from Chinese rice fields. However, more field data from representative sites in China are needed to reduce the uncertainties in this estimate.  相似文献

Drainage of peatlands for forestry starts a succession of ground vegetation in which mire species are gradually replaced by forest species. Some mire plant communities vanish quickly following the water-level drawdown; some may prevail longer in the moister patches of peatland. Drainage ditches, as a new kind of surface, introduce another component of spatial variation in drained peatlands. These variations were hypothesized to affect methane (CH4) fluxes from drained peatlands. Methane fluxes from different plant communities and unvegetated surfaces, including ditches, were measured at the drained part of Lakkasuo mire, Central Finland. The fluxes were found to be related to peatland site type, plant community, water-table position and soil temperature. At nutrient-rich fen sites fluxes between plant communities differed only a little: almost all plots acted as CH4 sinks (−0.9 to −0.4 mg CH4 m−2 d−1), with the exception of Eriophorum angustifolium Honck. communities, which emitted 0.9 g CH4 m−2 d−1. At nutrient-poor bog site the differences between plant communities were clearer. The highest emissions were measured from Eriophorum vaginatum L. communities (29.7 mg CH4 m−2 d−1), with a decreasing trend to Sphagna (10.0 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) and forest moss communities (2.6 mg CH4 m−2 d−1). CH4 emissions from different kinds of ditches were highly variable, and extremely high emissions (summertime averages 182–600 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) were measured from continuously water-covered ditches at the drained fen. Variability in the emissions was caused by differences in the origin and movement of water in the ditches, as well as differences in vegetation communities in the ditches. While drainage on average greatly decreases CH4 emissions from peatlands, a great spatial variability in fluxes is emerged. Emissions from ditches constantly covered with water, may in some cases have a great impact on the overall CH4 emissions from drained peatlands.  相似文献

Landscape patterns of CH4 fluxes in an alpine tundra ecosystem   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We measured CH4 fluxes from three major plant communities characteristic of alpine tundra in the Colorado Front Range. Plant communities in this ecosystem are determined by soil moisture regimes induced by winter snowpack distribution. Spatial patterns of CH4 flux during the snow-free season corresponded roughly with these plant communities. InCarex-dominated meadows, which receive the most moisture from snowmelt, net CH4 production occurred. However, CH4 production in oneCarex site (seasonal mean=+8.45 mg CH4 m–2 d–1) was significantly larger than in the otherCarex sites (seasonal means=–0.06 and +0.05 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). This high CH4 flux may have resulted from shallower snowpack during the winter. InAcomastylis meadows, which have an intermediate moisture regime, CH4 oxidation dominated (seasonal mean=–0.43 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). In the windsweptKobresia meadow plant community, which receive the least amount of moisture from snowmelt, only CH4 oxidation was observed (seasonal mean=–0.77 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). Methane fluxes correlated with a different set of environmental factors within each plant community. In theCarex plant community, CH4 emission was limited by soil temperature. In theAcomastylis meadows, CH4 oxidation rates correlated positively with soil temperature and negatively with soil moisture. In theKobresia community, CH4 oxidation was stimulated by precipitation. Thus, both snow-free season CH4 fluxes and the controls on those CH4 fluxes were related to the plant communities determined by winter snowpack.  相似文献

The effects of elevated concentrations of atmospheric CO2 on CH4 and N2O emissions from rice soil were investigated in controlled-environment chambers using rice plants growing in pots. Elevated CO2 significantly increased CH4 emission by 58% compared with ambient CO2. The CH4 emitted by plant-mediated transport and ebullition–diffusion accounted for 86.7 and 13.3% of total emissions during the flooding period under ambient level, respectively; and for 88.1 and 11.9% of total emissions during the flooding period under elevated CO2 level, respectively. No CH4 was emitted from plant-free pots, suggesting that the main source of emitted CH4 was root exudates or autolysis products. Most N2O was emitted during the first 3 weeks after flooding and rice transplanting, probably through denitrification of NO3 contained in the experimental soil, and was not affected by the CO2 concentration. Pre-harvest drainage suppressed CH4 emission but did not cause much N2O emission (< 10 μg N m−2 h−1) from the rice-plant pots at both CO2 concentrations.

Transformation of urea to ammonium is an important link in the nitrogen cycle in soil and water. Although microbial nitrogen transformations, such as nitrification and denitrification, are well studied in freshwater sediment and epiphytic biofilm in shallow waters, information about urea transformation in these environments is scarce. In this study, urea transformation of sedimentary, planktonic, and epiphytic microbial communities was quantified and urea transformation of epiphytic biofilms associated with three different common wetland macrophyte species is compared. The microbial communities were collected from a constructed wetland in October 2002 and urea transformation was quantified in the laboratory at in situ temperature (12°C) with the use of the 14C-urea tracer method, which measures the release of 14CO2 as a direct result of urease activity. It was found that the urea transformation was 100 times higher in sediment (12–22 mmol urea-N m−2 day−1) compared with the epiphytic activity on the surfaces of the submerged plant Elodea canadensis (0.1–0.2 mmol urea-N m−2 day−1). The epiphytic activity of leaves of Typha latifolia was lower (0.001–0.03 mmol urea-N m−2 day−1), while urea transformation was negligible in the water column and on the submerged leaves of the emergent plant Phragmites australis. However, because this wetland was dominated by dense beds of the submerged macrophyte E. canadensis, this plant provided a large surface area for epiphytic microbial activity—in the range of 23–33 m2 of plant surfaces per square meter of wetland. Thus, in the wetland system scale at the existing plant distribution and density, the submerged plant community had the potential to transform 2–7 mmol urea-N m−2 day−1 and was in the same magnitude as the urea transformation in the sediment.  相似文献

Responses of soil respiration (CO2 emission) to simulated N deposition were studied in a disturbed (reforested forest with previous understory and litter harvesting) and a rehabilitated (reforested forest with no understory and litter harvesting) tropical forest in southern China from October 2005 to September 2006. The objectives of the study were to test the following hypotheses: (1) soil respiration is higher in rehabilitated forest than in disturbed forest; (2) soil respiration in both rehabilitated and disturbed tropical forests is stimulated by N additions; and (3) soil respiration is more sensitive to N addition in disturbed forest than in rehabilitated forest due to relatively low soil nutrient status in the former, resulting from different previous human disturbance. Static chamber and gas chromatography techniques were employed to quantify the soil respiration, following different N treatments (Control, no N addition; Low-N, 5 g N m−2 year−1; Medium-N, 10 g N m−2 year−1), which had been applied continuously for 26 months before the respiration measurement. Results showed that soil respiration exhibited a strong seasonal pattern, with the highest rates observed in the hot and wet growing season (April–September) and the lowest rates in winter (December–February) in both rehabilitated and disturbed forests. Soil respiration rates exhibited significant positive exponential relationship with soil temperature and significant positive linear relationship with soil moisture. Soil respiration was also significantly higher in the rehabilitated forest than in the disturbed forest. Annual mean soil respiration rate in the rehabilitated forest was 20% lower in low-N plots (71 ± 4 mg CO2-C m−2 h−1) and 10% lower in medium-N plots (80 ± 4 mg CO2-C m−2 h−1) than in the control plots (89 ± 5 mg CO2-C m−2 h−1), and the differences between the control and low-N or medium-N treatments were statistically significant. In disturbed forest, annual mean soil respiration rate was 5% lower in low-N plots (63 ± 3 mg CO2-C m−2 h−1) and 8% lower in medium-N plots (61 ± 3 mg CO2-C m−2 h−1) than in the control plots (66 ± 4 mg CO2-C m−2 h−1), but the differences among treatments were not significant. The depressed effects of experimental N deposition occurred mostly in the hot and wet growing season. Our results suggest that response of soil respiration to elevated N deposition in the reforested tropical forests may vary depending on the status of human disturbance. The carbon (C) sink strength of arctic tundra is under pressure from increasing populations of arctic breeding geese. In this study we examined how CO2 and CH4 fluxes, plant biomass and soil C responded to the removal of vertebrate herbivores in a high arctic wet moss meadow that has been intensively used by barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) for ca. 20 years. We used 4 and 9 years old grazing exclosures to investigate the potential for recovery of ecosystem function during the growing season (July 2007). The results show greater above- and below-ground vascular plant biomass within the grazing exclosures with graminoid biomass being most responsive to the removal of herbivory whilst moss biomass remained unchanged. The changes in biomass switched the system from net emission to net uptake of CO2 (0.47 and −0.77 μmol m−2 s−1 in grazed and exclosure plots, respectively) during the growing season and doubled the C storage in live biomass. In contrast, the treatment had no impact on the CH4 fluxes, the total litter C pool or the soil C concentration. The rapid recovery of the above ground biomass and CO2 fluxes demonstrates the plasticity of this high arctic ecosystem in terms of response to changing herbivore pressure.  相似文献

Rates of rhizospheric methane oxidation were evaluated by aerobic incubations of subcores collected in flooded anoxic soils populated by emergent macrophytes, by greenhouse whole plant incubations, and by CH4 stable isotopic analysis. Subcore incubations defined upper limits for rhizospheric methane oxidation on an areal basis which were equal to or greater than emission rates. These rates are considered upper limits because O2 did not limit CH4 uptake as is likely to occur in situ. The ratio of maximum potential methane oxidation (MO) to methane emission (ME) ranged from 0.7 to 1.9 in Louisiana rice (Oryza sativa), from 1.0 to 4.0 in a N. Florida Sagittaria lancifolia marsh, and from 5.6 to 51 in Everglades Typha domingensis and Cladium jamaicense areas. Methane oxidation/methane emission ratios determined in whole plant incubations of Sagittaria lancifolia under oxic and anoxic conditions ranged from 0.5 to 1.6. Methane oxidation activity associated with emergent aquatic macrophytes was found primarily in fine root material. A weak correlation was observed between live root biomass and CH4 uptake in Typha. Rhizomes showed small or zero rates of methane uptake and no uptake was associated with plant stems. Methane stable isotope data from a S. lancifolia marsh were as follows: CH4 emitted from plants: −61.6 ± 0.3%; CH4 within stems: −42.0 ± 0.2%; CH4 within sedimentary bubbles: −51.7 ± 0.3%). The 13C enrichment observed relative to emitted CH4 could be due to preferential mobilization of CH4 containing the lighter isotope and/or the action of methanotrophic bacteria.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relationship between vascular plant production and CH4 emissions from an arctic wet tundra ecosystem in north‐east Greenland. Light intensity was manipulated by shading during three consecutive growing seasons (1998–2000). The shading treatment resulted in lower carbon cycling in the ecosystem as mean seasonal net ecosystem exchange (NEE) decreased from ?336 to ?196 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 and from ?476 to ?212 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and total ecosystem respiration decreased from 125 to 94 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 in 1999 and from 409 to 306 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 in 2000. Seasonal mean CH4 emissions in controls and shaded plots were, respectively, 6.5 and 4.5 mg CH4 m?2 h?1 in 1999 and 8.3 and 6.2 mg CH4 m?2 h?1 in 2000. We found that CH4 emission was sensitive to NEE and carbon turnover, and it is reasonable to assume that the correlation was due to a combined effect of vegetative CH4 transport and substrate quality coupled to vascular plant production. Total above‐ground biomass was correlated to mean seasonal CH4 emission, but separation into species showed that plant‐mediated CH4 transport was highly species dependent. Potential CH4 production peaked at the same depth as maximum root density (5–15 cm) and treatment differences further suggest that substrate quality was negatively affected by decreased NEE in the shaded plots. The concentration of dissolved CH4 decreased in the control plots as the growing season progressed while it was relatively stable in the shaded plots. This suggests that a progressively better developed root system in the controls increased the capacity to transport CH4 from the soil to the atmosphere. In conclusion, vascular plant photosynthetic rate and subsequent allocation of recently fixed carbon to below‐ground structures seemed to influence both vegetative CH4 transport and substrate quality.  相似文献

At the southern margin of permafrost in North America, climate change causes widespread permafrost thaw. In boreal lowlands, thawing forested permafrost peat plateaus (‘forest’) lead to expansion of permafrost‐free wetlands (‘wetland’). Expanding wetland area with saturated and warmer organic soils is expected to increase landscape methane (CH4) emissions. Here, we quantify the thaw‐induced increase in CH4 emissions for a boreal forest‐wetland landscape in the southern Taiga Plains, Canada, and evaluate its impact on net radiative forcing relative to potential long‐term net carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange. Using nested wetland and landscape eddy covariance net CH4 flux measurements in combination with flux footprint modeling, we find that landscape CH4 emissions increase with increasing wetland‐to‐forest ratio. Landscape CH4 emissions are most sensitive to this ratio during peak emission periods, when wetland soils are up to 10 °C warmer than forest soils. The cumulative growing season (May–October) wetland CH4 emission of ~13 g CH4 m?2 is the dominating contribution to the landscape CH4 emission of ~7 g CH4 m?2. In contrast, forest contributions to landscape CH4 emissions appear to be negligible. The rapid wetland expansion of 0.26 ± 0.05% yr?1 in this region causes an estimated growing season increase of 0.034 ± 0.007 g CH4 m?2 yr?1 in landscape CH4 emissions. A long‐term net CO2 uptake of >200 g CO2 m?2 yr?1 is required to offset the positive radiative forcing of increasing CH4 emissions until the end of the 21st century as indicated by an atmospheric CH4 and CO2 concentration model. However, long‐term apparent carbon accumulation rates in similar boreal forest‐wetland landscapes and eddy covariance landscape net CO2 flux measurements suggest a long‐term net CO2 uptake between 49 and 157 g CO2 m?2 yr?1. Thus, thaw‐induced CH4 emission increases likely exert a positive net radiative greenhouse gas forcing through the 21st century.  相似文献

We studied concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the eutrophic Temmesjoki River and Estuary in the Liminganlahti Bay in 2003–2004 and evaluated the atmospheric fluxes of the gases based on measured concentrations, wind speeds and water current velocities. The Temmesjoki River was a source of CO2, CH4 and N2O to the atmosphere, whereas the Liminganlahti Bay was a minor source of CH4 and a minor source or a sink of CO2 and N2O. The results show that the fluxes of greenhouse gases in river ecosystems are highly related to the land use in its catchment areas. The most upstream river site, surrounded by forests and drained peatlands, released significant amounts of CO2 and CH4, with average fluxes of 5,400 mg CO2–C m−2 d−1 and 66 mg CH4–C m−2 d−1, and concentrations of 210 μM and 345 nM, respectively, but N2O concentrations, at an average of 17 nM, were close to the atmospheric equilibrium concentration. The downstream river sites surrounded by agricultural soils released significant amounts of N2O (with an average emission of 650 μg N2O–N m−2 d−1 and concentration of 22 nM), whereas the CO2 and CH4 concentrations were low compared to the upstream site (55 μM and 350 nM). In boreal regions, rivers are partly ice-covered in wintertime (approximately 5 months). A large part of the gases, i.e. 58% of CO2, 55% of CH4 and 36% of N2O emissions, were found to be released during wintertime from unfrozen parts of the river.  相似文献

To investigate annual variation in soil respiration (R S) and its components [autotrophic (R A) and heterotrophic (R H)] in relation to seasonal changes in soil temperature (ST) and soil water content (SWC) in an Abies holophylla stand (stand A) and a Quercus-dominated stand (stand Q), we set up trenched plots and measured R S, ST and SWC for 2 years. The mean annual rate of R S was 436 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, ranging from 76 to 1,170 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, in stand A and 376 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, ranging from 82 to 1,133 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, in stand Q. A significant relationship between R S and its components and ST was observed over the 2 years in both stands, whereas a significant correlation between R A and SWC was detected only in stand Q. On average over the 2 years, R A accounted for approximately 34% (range 17–67%) and 31% (15–82%) of the variation in R S in stands A and Q, respectively. Our results suggested that vegetation type did not significantly affect the annual mean contributions of R A or R H, but did affect the pattern of seasonal change in the contribution of R A to R S.  相似文献

Earthworms make up the dominant fraction of the biomass of soil animals in most temperate grasslands and have important effects on the structure and function of these ecosystems. We hypothesized that the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on soil moisture and plant biomass production would increase earthworm activity, expressed as surface cast production. Using a screen-aided CO2 control facility (open top and open bottom rings), eight 1.2-m2 grassland plots in Switzerland have been maintained since March 1994 at ambient CO2 concentrations (350 μl CO2 l−1) and eight at elevated CO2 (610 μl CO2 l−1). Cumulative earthworm surface cast production measured 40 times over 1 year (April 1995–April 1996) in plots treated with elevated CO2 (2206 g dry mass m−2 year−1) was 35% greater (P<0.05) than that measured in plant communities maintained at ambient CO2 (1633 g dry mass m−2 year−1). At these rates of surface cast production, worms would require about 100 years to egest the equivalent of the amount of soil now found in the Ah horizon (top 15 cm) under current ambient CO2 concentrations, and 75 years under elevated CO2. Elevated atmospheric CO2 had no influence on the seasonality of earthworm activity. Cumulative surface cast production measured over the 7-week period immediately following the 6-week summer dry period in 1995 (no surface casting) was positively correlated (P<0.05) with the mean soil water content calculated over this dry and subsequent wetter period, when viewed across all treatments. However, no correlations were observed with soil temperature or with annual aboveground plant biomass productivity. No CO2-related differences were observed in total nitrogen (Ntot) and organic carbon (Corg) concentration of surface casts, although concentrations of both elements varied seasonally. The CO2-induced increase in earthworm surface casting activity corresponded to a 30% increase of the amount of Ntot (8.9 mg N m−2 vs. 6.9 mg N m−2) and Corg (126 mg C m−2 vs. 94 mg C m−2) egested by the worms in one year. Thus, our results demonstrate an important indirect stimulatory effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 on earthworm activity which may have profound effects on ecosystem function and plant community structure in the long term. Photoautotrophic micropropagation of Spathiphyllum   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In order to maximize yield, Spathiphyllum, an ornamental plant, was cultured in vitro in novel culture vessels termed Vitron. The best growth was obtained by culturing plantlets on sugar-free liquid medium under CO2 enrichment (3 000 μmol mol−1 24 h−1 d−1) at a low photon flux density (PPFD of 45 μmol m−2 s−1), suggesting that the novel Vitron culture system is suitable for the photoautotrophic micropropagation of Spathiphyllum.  相似文献

Using CO2 gasometry, net photosynthetic (P N) and dark respiration rates (R D) were measured in leaves or traps of 12 terrestrial carnivorous plant species usually grown in the shade. Generally, mean maximum P N (60 nmol CO2 g−1(DM) s−1 or 2.7 μmol m−2 s−1) was low in comparison with that of vascular non-carnivorous plants but was slightly higher than that reported elsewhere for carnivorous plants. After light saturation, the facultatively heliophytic plants behaved as shade-adapted plants. Mean R D in leaves and traps of all species reached about 50% of maximum P N and represents the high photosynthetic (metabolic) cost of carnivory.  相似文献

The flux of CO2 and CH4 from lakes and rivers in arctic Alaska   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3
Partial pressures of CO2 and CH4 were measured directly or calculated from pH and alkalinity or DIC measurements for 25 lakes and 4 rivers on the North Slope of Alaska. Nearly all waters were super-saturated with respect to atmospheric pressures of CO2 and CH4. Gas fluxes to the atmosphere ranged from −6.5 to 59.8 mmol m−2 d−1 for CO2 and from 0.08 to 1.02 mmol m−2 d−1 for CH4, and were uncorrelated with latitude or lake morphology. Seasonal trends include a buildup of CO2 and CH4 under ice during winter, and often an increased CO2 flux rate in August due to partial lake turnover. Nutrient fertilization experiments resulted in decreased CO2 release from a lake due to photosynthetic uptake, but no change in CO2 release from a river due to the much faster water renewal time. In lakes and rivers the groundwater input of dissolved CO2 and CH4 is supplemented by in-lake respiration of dissolved and particulate carbon washed in from land. The release of carbon from aquatic systems to the atmosphere averaged 24 g C m−2 y−1, and in coastal areas where up to 50% of the surface area is water, this loss equals frac 1/5 to 1/2 of the net carbon accumulation rates estimated for tundra.  相似文献
