Among both ecologists and the wider community there is a tacit assumption that predators regulate populations of their prey. But there is evidence from a wide taxonomic and geographic range of studies that predators that are adapted to co-evolved prey generally do not regulate their prey. This is because predators either cannot reproduce as fast as their prey and/or are inefficient hunters unable to catch enough prey to sustain maximum reproduction. The greater capacity of herbivores to breed successfully is, however, normally restricted by a lack of enough food of sufficient quality to support reproduction. But whenever this shortage is alleviated by a large pulse of food, herbivores increase their numbers to outbreak levels. Their predators are unable to contain this increase, but their numbers, too, surge in response to this increase in food. Eventually both their populations will crash once the food supply runs out, first for the herbivores and then for the predators. Then an “over-run” of predators will further depress the already declining prey population, appearing to be controlling its abundance. This latter phenomenon has led many ecologists to conclude that predators are regulating the numbers of their prey. However, it is the same process that is revealed during outbreaks that limits populations of both predator and prey in “normal” times, although this is usually not readily apparent. Nevertheless, as all the diverse cases discussed here attest, the abundance of predators and their co-evolved prey are both limited by their food: the predators are passengers, not drivers.  相似文献

Interactions among species, which range from competition to facilitation, have profound effects on ecosystem functioning. Large carnivores are of particular importance in shaping community structure since they are at the top of the food chain, and many efforts are made to conserve such keystone species. Despite this, the mechanisms of carnivore interactions are far from understood, yet they are key to enabling or hindering their coexistence and hence are highly relevant for their conservation. The goal of this review is thus to provide detailed information on the extents of competition and facilitation between large carnivores and their impact in shaping their life histories. Here, we use the example of spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) and lions (Panthera leo) and provide a comprehensive knowledge of their interactions based on meta‐analyses from available literature (148 publications). Despite their strong potential for both exploitation and interference competition (range and diet overlap, intraguild predation and kleptoparasitism), we underline some mechanisms facilitating their coexistence (different prey‐age selection and scavenging opportunities). We stress the fact that prey abundance is key to their coexistence and that hyaenas forming very large groups in rich ecosystems could have a negative impact on lions. We show that the coexistence of spotted hyaenas and lions is a complex balance between competition and facilitation, and that prey availability within the ecosystem determines which predator is dominant. However, there are still many gaps in our knowledge such as the spatio‐temporal dynamics of their interactions. As both species' survival becomes increasingly dependent on protected areas, where their densities can be high, it is critical to understand their interactions to inform both reintroduction programs and protected area management.  相似文献

Abstract

A study of the attitudes and actions of 281 dog owners towards neutering their animals is reported from New Providence, The Bahamas. Owner attitudes towards neutering are associated with different sterilization rates of dogs. While owners' gender is associated with differences in attitudes, these differences are not necessarily associated with owner behavior with respect to neutering their animals. Men, more than women, want to have animals for long-term breeding. No evidence is found to support the belief that men are less likely to neuter their dogs than women, but younger owners are less likely than older owners to neuter their dogs. A comparison with a study from Australia suggests that Bahamians are more likely to project human traits on to their animals and so appear more reluctant to have their dogs neutered.  相似文献

When cells of both Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are grown in batch culture in nutrient-rich media, their cell walls are regular in thickness, their cell size is within the normal range for each species, and their septation patterns are orderly. When cells of each of these species are examined directly in infected tissue in the rabbit tibia model infection, their cell wall thickness is often much increased and very irregular around the circumference of the cell, their cell size is often increased, and their septation patterns are often severely deranged. All of these alterations in cell wall structure occur in the absence of antibiotics, and we suggest that they may be an expression of phenotypic plasticity in response to altered environmental conditions such as specific nutrient limitations, the presence of antibacterial factors, and growth of the cells on hard surfaces such as rabbit bone or plastic catheters. Some of these specific cell wall alterations are also seen when staphylococcal cells are exposed, in vitro or in vivo, to antibiotics such as clindamycin, but we emphasize that growth in tissue alone is sufficient for their induction.  相似文献

对北京地区蕨类植物区系进行了初步分析,研究表明,北京共有蕨类植物77种,隶属于19科34属,以蹄盖蕨科、岩蕨科、鳞毛蕨科、卷柏科等为优势科,以岩蕨属、卷柏属、铁角蕨属等为优势属,科内及属内分化程度较低,种类组成贫乏;地理成分以温带成分占优势,有11属为温带分布属,占非世界分布属总数的61.11%,除世界种和中国特有种外,全为温带性质的种;生境特点以石生为主,大多数种类分布在北京西部和北部的山区;与河北的关系最为密切,其次为山西、内蒙、辽宁、山东,与秦岭也有一定的联系,与西藏的关系疏远。  相似文献

Branched chain fatty acids (BCFAs) are fatty acids substituted with alkyl groups. Many of them are chiral and therefore occur in two enantiomeric forms. This review describes their occurrence in Nature, their biosynthesis, their properties as flavours, and their enzymatic kinetic resolution. Many lipases are able to separate the enantiomers of BCFAs, in hydrolysis, esterification or transesterification reactions. Very often, the stereoselectivity of these reactions is remarkably high, even when the chiral carbon atom is remote from the carboxylic acid group.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A positive relationship is shown between the frequency of successful completions of courtship and the extent of development of the 'calling' posture of E. cautella females. Further relationships are shown between the frequency of successful completions of courtship and the positions in which calling females hold their antennae. During late photophase, calling females which hold their antennae forward are less likely to mate than are similarly calling females which hold their antennae back over the wings, whereas in early scotophase this relationship is reversed, and calling females which hold their antennae forward are more likely to mate than are similarly calling females which hold their antennae back. These observations are discussed in relation to the diel rhythm of the species, disturbance, and female receptivity to male courtship.  相似文献

Colicin biology.     
Colicins are proteins produced by and toxic for some strains of Escherichia coli. They are produced by strains of E. coli carrying a colicinogenic plasmid that bears the genetic determinants for colicin synthesis, immunity, and release. Insights gained into each fundamental aspect of their biology are presented: their synthesis, which is under SOS regulation; their release into the extracellular medium, which involves the colicin lysis protein; and their uptake mechanisms and modes of action. Colicins are organized into three domains, each one involved in a different step of the process of killing sensitive bacteria. The structures of some colicins are known at the atomic level and are discussed. Colicins exert their lethal action by first binding to specific receptors, which are outer membrane proteins used for the entry of specific nutrients. They are then translocated through the outer membrane and transit through the periplasm by either the Tol or the TonB system. The components of each system are known, and their implication in the functioning of the system is described. Colicins then reach their lethal target and act either by forming a voltage-dependent channel into the inner membrane or by using their endonuclease activity on DNA, rRNA, or tRNA. The mechanisms of inhibition by specific and cognate immunity proteins are presented. Finally, the use of colicins as laboratory or biotechnological tools and their mode of evolution are discussed.  相似文献

Oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) are used largely as either primers, antisense, or triplex-forming units. Phosphodiester ODN (PO-ODN), which are very rapidly degraded by exonucleases, must be protected at their ends. Even so, their life span inside cells is quite short. Phosphorothioate ODN (PS-ODN) are less sensitive to nucleases and are extensively used as antisense. Unfortunately, unlike PO-ODN, they interact with a number of molecules, including proteins, in addition to their specific nucleic acid targets. Their affinity for their target is lower than that of PO-ODN. PS-ODN containing propyne groups on C5 of pyrimidine have been shown to have a higher affinity toward their nucleic acid target. Here, we show that propynylated PO-ODN are more stable and much more efficient than their propyne-free counterparts. They are not efficient when they are used as lipoplexes, but they act as specific antisense on electroporation.  相似文献

The impact of insect endoparasites (parasitoids) on the physiology and behaviour of their hosts is reviewed within the context of the nutritional ecology of the parasitoids and their hosts. Alterations in the consumption, utilization and allocation of food by parasitized hosts are common, as are internal changes in their metabolic physiology. Gregarious parasitoid species frequently increase feeding by their host larvae whereas solitary parasitoid species often reduce feeding and growth of their hosts. Many parasitoid-associated changes in host physiology and behaviour are interpreted to be of adaptive significance to parasitoids. Substantial circumstantial evidence suggests, and a few direct tests of such adaptive significance indicate, that parasitoids alter their hosts in ways beneficial to their own fitness. However, most of the changes in parasitized hosts are of unknown cause and undocumented significance to the parasitoids. Several relevant hypotheses are presented, and these require extensive evaluation (often requiring novel experimental approaches) before a thorough understanding of parasitoid nutritional ecology is established.  相似文献

Prokineticins are a novel family of secreted peptides with diverse regulatory roles, one of which is their capacity to modulate immunity in humans and in other species. Prokineticins are small peptides of 8 kDa that mediate their biological activities by signaling through two homologous G-protein-coupled receptors (prokineticin receptor 1 and prokineticin receptor 2). This family of peptides is characterized by a completely conserved N-terminal hexapeptide crucial for their bioactivities and a unique structural motif comprising five disulfide bonds. Prokineticins and their receptors are highly expressed in bone marrow, in peripheral circulating leukocytes, in inflamed tissues and in resident organ immune cells. Their structure, size, signaling and biological activities are reminiscent of the chemokine superfamily. In this review, emphasis is placed on the properties of prokineticins as cytokines and their role in the immune system.  相似文献

The extent to which "nurture" as opposed to "nature" determines behavior and sociosexual preferences in mammalian species is controversial although most recent interest has focused on genetic determinants. We report here that if sheep and goats are cross-fostered at birth, but raised in mixed-species groups, their play and grooming behavior resembles that of their foster rather than genetic species. There are no sex differences in effects on these behaviors, and other species-specific behavior patterns such as aggression, browsing, climbing, and vocalizations are unaffected. In adulthood, cross-fostered males strongly prefer to socialize and mate with females of their foster mother's species, even if raised with a conspecific of their own species. Castration within 2 days of birth slightly reduces the level of this altered social preference but mating preference following short-term testosterone treatment is the same as for gonadally intact animals. Cross-fostered females also show significant preference for socializing with females and mating with males of their foster mother's species, although this effect is weaker than that in both gonadally intact and castrated males. When cross-fostered animals are placed in flocks containing members of only their genetic species for 3 years, male social and mating preferences for females of their mother's species remain virtually unaffected. Females change to display an exclusive mating preference for members of their genetic species in 1-2 years although they still retain some social interest in female members of their foster species. Thus, there are clear sex differences in the impact of the emotional bond between a mother and her offspring in these mammals. Effects on males are strongest and irreversibly maintained even after altering their social environment, whereas those on females are weaker and mating preferences are clearly adaptable in the face of altered social priorities. These sex differences are presumably caused by pre-, or early postnatal, organizational effects of sex hormones on the brain.  相似文献

This paper looks at second-generation immigrants and the effects of ‘inevitable’ assimilation on their transnational ties. The dominant concept of transnationalism is strongly influenced by the experience of transmigrants moving back and forth between the sending and receiving countries or by immigrants involved in transnational activities. Research on second-generation Hindustanis in the Netherlands shows that their transnational ties are strong due to the ethnification of their community. However, their transnational ties are changing. The second-generation Hindustanis have a source culture and are developing new ties, while loosening relations with their parents’ country. Thus, transnationalism is assuming new forms, calling for a typology of different forms of transnational relations.  相似文献

NSAIDs are potent chemopreventive agents for colon cancer. Although their mechanism of action is unknown, it probably relates to their modulation of colon epithelial cell kinetics, i.e. apoptosis and/or cell proliferation. NSAIDs are pleiotropic in their biochemical activities; their best known effect is inhibition of prostaglandin H synthase (PHS), the enzyme catalyzing the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. Current data appear to lead to two conflicting conclusions. One body of data indicates that PHS is important in induction of apoptosis and colon carcinogenesis and that its inhibition by NSAIDs is required for induction of apoptosis and their overall chemopreventive effect. Another set of data indicates that NSAIDs may induce apoptosis and prevent colon cancer without inhibiting the activity of PHS. Both sides of this argument are presented and discussed. This apparent contradiction may be resolved if one accepts that both mechanisms are correct but that they act on different steps of this multistep process.  相似文献

The plant kingdom produces an extraordinary diversity of secondary metabolites and the majority of the literature supports a defensive ecological role for them, particularly against invertebrate herbivores (antagonists). Plants also produce secondary compounds in floral nectar and pollen and these are often similar to those produced for defense against invertebrates elsewhere in the plant. This is largely because the chemical armoury within a single plant species is typically restricted to a few biochemical pathways and limited chemical products but how their occurrence in floral rewards is regulated to mediate both defence and enhanced pollination is not well understood. Several phytochemicals are reviewed here comparing the defensive function alongside their benefit to flower visiting mutualists. These include caffeine, aconitine, nicotine, thymol, linalool, lupanine and grayanotoxins comparing the evidence for their defensive function with their impacts on pollinators, their behaviour and well-being. Drivers of adaptation and the evolution of floral traits are discussed in the context of recent studies. Ultimately more research is required that helps determine the impacts of floral chemicals in free flying bees, and how compounds are metabolized, sequestered or excreted by flower feeding insects to understand how they may then affect the pollinators or their parasites. More work is also required on how plants regulate nectar and pollen chemistry to better understand how secondary metabolites and their defensive and pollinator supporting functions are controlled, evolve and adapt.
