A method for the bioassay of Enthomophthora spp. against aphids is described. Twenty-four isolates comprising five species of fungi were screened for activity against Therioaphis trifolii f. maculata. The only isolates with a high level of activity were those of E. sphaerosperma obtained from aphids. The initial bioassays with E. sphaerosperma indicated that aphids, starved for 24 hr during inoculation with E. sphaerosperma primary spores, were less susceptible than those removed from the plants, for just the period of exposure to the primary spore shower. Using the latter procedure, five assays of the most pathogenic isolate gave a mean LC50 of 11.3 primary spores/mm2 while bioassays of four other isolates gave LC50 values ranging from 15.7 to 27.3 spores/mm2. The potential of E. sphaerosperma as a microbial control agent for T. trifolii f. maculata in Australia is discussed.  相似文献

Calopteryx maculata and C. dimidiata damselfly females respond to male courtship with specific displays which signal differences in their receptivity. These include a rejection (wing spreading) and an invitation (wing-flipping) display, as well as a neutral (sit still) response. There are interspecific differences in the likelihood of each female display and in male responses to these displays. C. maculata males persist in courtship irrespective of female response, while C. dimidiata males generally stop courting when the female's response is rejection or neutrality. I suggest that these differences result from interspecific differences in oviposition behaviour. Female C. maculata oviposit at the water surface, which exposes them to disturbance by males attempting to mate. Females are therefore likely to remate to secure postcopulatory guarding when changing oviposition sites and males are expected to be persistent in courtship. Female C. dimidiata submerge to oviposit, which frees them from male disturbance and means that males have less control over female access to oviposition sites. Males therefore have less influence on mating by females and are expected not to persist in courtship of non-receptive females.  相似文献

Taxus chinensis var. mairei (Lemée et Lévl) Cheng et L.K. Fu is an evergreen tall tree ubiquitous to the southeastern region in China. The first chemical study on this species was published in 1987. Since then about 163 compounds including taxoids and non-taxane compounds were isolated from seeds, root, bark and leaves of this species. This review summarized the chemical investigation on T. chinensis var. mairei (Lemée et Lévl) Cheng et L.K. Fu in the past 20 years. T. chinensis var. mairei (Lemée et Lévl) Cheng et L.K. Fu was assigned as a variation of T. chinensis (Pilger) Rehd. in Flora of China. However, present chemotaxonomic data would suggest that these two plants might belong to two different chemotypes; further genetic investigation and comprehensive chemical studies on them are warranted to address this issue.  相似文献

Examination of Liatris mucronata gave the known 15-hydroxylated heliangolides liscundin, liscunditrin, punctaliatrin and two new closely related heliangolides. Liatris acidota furnished six new similar but 15-deoxygenated heliangolides as well as euparin and 3β-acetoxytaraxaster-20-en-30-aldehyde. Liatris aspera gave a known glycosidic germacradienolide and a new germacradienolide as well as several known flavones and a known benzofuran. Structures were established by spectroscopic methods and chemical transformations.  相似文献

Flow cytometry, morphometry and molecular markers [plastid DNA and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA] were used to determine taxonomic and phylogeographic patterns in Dactylorhiza maculata s.l. from Scandinavia. A total of 238 individuals from 27 populations from throughout all of Scandinavia, including the adjacent Kola Peninsula of Russia, were analyzed. Diploid D. maculata ssp. fuchsii and autotetraploid D. maculata ssp. maculata are morphologically differentiated. Fragment size variants from 10 plastid DNA loci (seven microsatellite loci and three loci with indel variation) were combined to give 43 haplotypes. Three major groups of haplotypes were found. Group I haplotypes were prevalent in the north and the northeast, whereas Group II haplotypes were prevalent in the south and the southwest. Group III was represented by only a single haplotype and appeared to be the result of introgression from D. incarnata s.l. Group I and Group II haplotypes did not correspond with cytologically and morphologically defined D. maculata ssp. fuchsii or D. maculata ssp. maculata. Past introgressive gene flow rather than recent hybridization is envisaged. Intermediate Group I haplotypes between Group II and the rest of Group I were detected in a zone of contact in central Sweden, which may suggest plastid DNA recombination. The six ITS alleles scored showed strong positive correlation with taxonomy. All data sets obtained for ssp. maculata were significantly correlated with geography. Three different autotetraploid lineages are hypothesized. One lineage may represent postglacial immigration from the south and the other two lineages may represent eastern immigration routes. Morphology and ITS data suggested that subarctic populations of ssp. maculata should be recognized as var. kolaënsis.  相似文献

From three of five investigated species of Griselinia a new iridoid glucoside, griselinoside, was isolated. It was found to be present also in foliage of Aralidium pinnatifidum and Toricellia angulata, accompanied in the former by aralidioside another novel iridoid glucoside. The structures and absolute configurations of the two iridoids were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and chemical conversions. From G. littoralis and T. angulata the glucosides magnolioside and syringoside respectively were isolated. 13C NMR spectra are given for thirteen iridoid derivatives.  相似文献

Species delineation in the spotted gum complex was revisited focusing on Corymbia maculata. This study expands the range of C. maculata analysed with microsatellite markers to include populations from the north of the species range. It supported earlier findings that it is a cohesive genetic entity, well resolved from northern spotted gum taxa, Corymbia citriodora and Corymbia henryi; and inferences that its insularity is due to early lineage divergence and historical isolation. The northern extent of C. maculata sampled, as defined by chloroplast and nuclear genomes predominantly of C. maculata character, was the location of Kiwarrak, south of the Manning River near Taree in New South Wales. Trees from a recognised intergrade zone at the Yarratt locality, around 26 km north of Kiwarrak, also possessed a uniquely C. maculata chloroplast haplotype, but their nuclear genomes were predominantly of northern taxa ancestry. Range expansion of northern taxa leading to southerly gene movement into populations formerly C. maculata, would account for this apparent instance of chloroplast capture. Two subpopulations were identified in C. maculata, a northern population of which the Ourimbah locality was the most southerly studied, and a southern population of which Wingello was the most northerly locality studied. Diminished levels of northern taxa ancestry, i.e. C. citriodora or C. henryi, in individuals from the southern, relative to the northern subpopulation of C. maculata, suggested that secondary contact with northern taxa contributes to its substructure.  相似文献

Giant wood spiders, Nephila maculata (Fabricius 1793), typically have a greenish cephalothorax and a dark abdomen decorated with striking yellow bands and spots. However, in Taiwan and neighbouring coastal islands we also found some morphologically indistinguishable individuals that were totally dark. As insects are attracted to ultraviolet (UV) light, we compared the UV reflectance property and insect-catching ability of the two morphs to see whether variation in colour affected foraging success. We also examined the population genetic structure to estimate indirectly the level of gene flow between these two colour morphs. Body surface UV reflection rate was measured from six areas of the spider with a spectrometer. To compare the insect-catching ability of different morphs, we recorded the spiders' body colour, orb size and insect-interception rates. The typical morph of N. maculata reflected significantly more UV in four of the six areas examined and caught significantly more insects than the melanic morph. We estimated population genetic structure by allozyme electrophoresis, using 20 loci from 17 enzymes. The population differentiation index (FST) derived from all eight polymorphic loci was 0.023, indicating a minimum level of genetic differentiation. These results indicate that the two morphs ofN. maculata may be members of an interbreeding population, and melanics have lower foraging success because of a lower body surface reflectance.  相似文献

A new cyanogenic glycoside isolated from pods of Acacia sieberiana var. woodii has been shown by chemical and spectroscopic methods to be (2S)-2-[(6-O-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-3-methylbut-3-enenitrileo. Acid-catalysed hydrolysis of the glycoside afforded arabinose and proacacipetalin, and base-catalysed double-bond migration gave 2- [(6-O-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-β- d-glucopyranosyl)oxy ]-3-methylbut-2-enenitrile.  相似文献

Presence or absence of light is considered to significantly affect predation within freshwater communities. In relation to light regime, the scope of the present study is to identify proximate factors accounting for different rates of predation in juvenile Notonecta maculata. It has been shown that foraging of juvenile N. maculata on Daphnia magna is reduced under dark conditions. These differences are accounted for by the presence/absence of light and are not regulated by any endogenous circadian rhythm. Direct observation of predation components revealed that in the dark, daphnid prey is detected at shorter distances, thus lowering the rate of encounter which finally results in a decreasing number of prey items eaten. Handling time was found to significantly increase during dark periods. Since the amount of food ingested per prey item increases to a certain extent with increasing handling time, it is suggested that the decreasing number of daphnids consumed is compensated by gaining a higher amount of food per item during a lengthier, more thorough, handling of the prey. A mechanistic model that describes the foraging process along a general predation cycle was parameterized based on the results of direct observations, instead of using classic functional response curves. This allows the comparison of model output to independent functional response data. A good correlation between observed and predicted data confirms the assumption that the reduction of the nocturnal predation rate is caused by shifting predation behaviour and indicates that the crucial light/dark differences in the foraging of N. maculata are considered in the approach.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Species may occur over a wide geographical range within which populations can display large variation in reproductive success and genetic diversity. Neotinea maculata is a rare orchid of conservation concern at the edge of its range in Ireland, where it occurs in small populations. However, it is relatively common throughout the Mediterranean region. Here, factors that affect rarity of N. maculata in Ireland are investigated by comparing Irish populations with those found in Italy, where it is more common.

Methods

Vegetation communities, breeding system and genetic diversity were compared using three amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) primer pairs in populations in Ireland and Italy. Vegetation was quantified using quadrats taken along transects in study populations, and hand pollination experiments were performed to assess reliance of N. maculata on pollinators in both Irish and Italian populations.

Key Results

Neotinea maculata occupies different vegetation communities in Italian and Irish populations. Breeding system experiments show that N. maculata is 100 % autogamous, and there are no differences in fruit and seed production in selfed, outcrossed and unmanipulated plants. AFLP markers revealed that Irish and Italian populations have similar genetic diversity and are distinct from each other.

Conclusions

Neotinea maculata does not suffer any negative effects of autogamous reproduction; it self-pollinates and sets seed readily in the absence of pollinators. It occupies a variety of habitats in both Ireland and Italy; however, Irish populations are small and rare and should be conserved. Chemical signals can be the basis of interspecific recognition and speciation in many animals. The Columbretes Islands wall lizard, Podarcis atrata is very close genetically to the mainland Iberian wall lizard Podarcis hispanica. However, a previous study suggested that chemosensory interspecific recognition would avoid reproductive interactions and hybridization between these two species. These results suggested that chemicals used in intraspecific communication might differ in composition and/or proportions between these two species. In this paper, we used gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to characterize the chemical composition of the lipophilic fraction from femoral gland secretions of male P. atrata and P. hispanica. The analysis showed that chemicals found in femoral secretions varied in composition and proportions between species and between populations. Seven steroids and two unidentified waxy esters, were exclusive of P. atrata lizards from the islands. In contrast, nine steroids and other six compounds were only found in mainland P. hispanica. There were also differences in proportions of shared compounds between species. Moreover, all these differences were higher between P. atrata and P. hispanica than between any population of P. hispanica. Chemical differences might be consequence of genetic differences, but they could also be explained by adaptation to different habitats with different climatic conditions or diet resources. Compounds that are specific of each species, or differences in the pattern of compounds, could explain species recognition. Therefore, these results of chemical composition and previous studies of chemosensory recognition reinforce the fact that the genetic differences between P. hispanica and P. atrata may result in an effective reproductive isolation between these two taxa.  相似文献

Polysaccharides that bind with sterols and render them water-soluble were isolated from two mycelial fungi, Rhizopus arrhizus and Penicillium roquefortii and a yeast Saccharomyces carlsbergensis. The polysaccharides from R. arrhizus and S. carlsbergensis were accompanied by small quantities of phosphorus, protein and lipid, none of which significantly influenced the binding of sterol to polysaccharide. The chemical composition and sterol-binding properties of the polysaccharides from the filamentous species were almost identical, but differed significantly from those of the yeast polysaccharide. The principal sterol-binding polysaccharide of S. carlsbergensis was identified as a mannan and that of the filamentous fungi as a glucan(s). The binding capacity of the purified yeast polysaccharide was almost two-fold greater than that of R. arrhizus and P. roquefortii.  相似文献

The roots of Argyranthemum adauctum ssp. jacobaeifolium, a rare endemic from Gran Canaria, afforded two new derivatives of the aromatic acetylene frutescin and 8-isovaleryloxymyrcene, while the aerial parts gave a new bisabolol derivative. Vuilleminia nilsii sp. nov. is described based on collections made in Argelès-sur-Mer communal forest, France. It is characterized by a resupinate, smooth, whitish, decorticating basidiocarp, cylindrical cystidia, heavily crystallized matrix, and guttulate, allantoid spores. It can be distinguished from V. coryli by basidiospore size, substrate preferences, abundance of dendrohyphidia, and crystal in the context. Phylogenetic analyses place Vuilleminia ericae, Dendrothele dryina (= V. dryina) and Dendrothele maculata in a distinct, well-defined clade. The new genus Dendrominia is proposed for this clade. The new combinations Dendrominia dryina, D. ericae, and D. maculata are proposed. Dendrothele corticola is regarded as a synonym of D. maculata. A lectotype is selected for V. macrospora. An updated key to the genus Vuilleminia and a key to Dendrominia species are provided.  相似文献
