Transfer of the catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis , to 10% sea water (101 mosmol l−1) or to 0·4% NaCl (140 mosmol l−1) does not evoke any change in plasma osmolarity from the normal freshwater values. There is, however, a reduction in urine flow rate (UFR) and increase in urine osmolarity without any change in the rate of osmolar clearance. In isosmotic (25% sea water or 0·7% NaCl) and in hyperosmotic (30% sea water or 1·1% NaCl) media there is a significant increase in plasma osmolarity accompanied by marked reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), UFR and free water clearance. The results suggest that the catfish cannot effectively osmoregulate in isosmotic or hyperosmotic media and that the inability of the renal tubules to increase reabsorption of water and to reduce free water clearance may account for the restricted range of salinity tolerance of this catfish. Also, in the hyperosmotic media, plasma levels of cortisol are lowered while in the proximal pars distalis the corticotrophs appear active, suggesting increased utilization and clearance of cortisol. Prolactin-secreting cells, however, are degranulated and chromophobic in catfish maintained in hyperosmotic environment.  相似文献

This study describes the diet composition, diet overlap and prey diversity in two economically and ecologically important marine catfish species: the bronze catfish (Netuma bilineata) and the blacktip sea catfish (Plicofollis dussumieri) collected between January and December 2015 from the northern Arabian Sea coast of Pakistan. Stomach data of 342 bronze catfish and 283 blacktip sea catfish were examined. Diet composition and feeding strategy of each species by identification of stomach contents were weighed and enumerated. Both species primarily consumed teleosts, Brachyura and small amounts of a wide variety of prey items; however, specialization was a more common trait for the bronze catfish than for the black tip sea catfish. The Morisita‐Horn index showed considerable diet overlap in percentage of mean weights (0.847) than in numbers (0.612) between co‐prey pairs of both species. The highest Bray‐Curtis similarity between the southwest monsoon (SWM) and south inter monsoon (SIM) was observed in bronze catfish and lowest between autumn inter monsoon (AIM) seasons in both species. While Bray‐Curtis dissimilarity was observed, both species share diet niches and diet overlap. The present study evaluation of the feeding strategy and potential competition between two sympatric species of marine catfishes can provide the framework for their conservation and management in the region.  相似文献

Synopsis Sea catfish, tested individually for 3-day periods in an automated data acquisition system, displayed a nocturnal pattern of locomotor activity with 62% of the activity occurring during scotophase. In addition, there were two relative maxima of activity at 0700–0900 and 1300–1500 C.S.T. This diel pattern of activity could not be correlated with tidal phenomena in the fish's natural environment and is virtually identical to that exhibited by several freshwater catfish species. Thus, even though sea catfish are a primarily estuarine fish and subject to daily tidal fluctuations, tidal rhythmicity is apparently not used as a cue for diel activity patterns.  相似文献

Morphological features that impair a predator's ability to consume a prey item may benefit individual prey; but what of features that prolong prey-handling but do not enhance prey survival? For example, a striped eel catfish Plotosus lineatus will be fatally envenomated if struck by its specialist predator, the greater sea snake Hydrophis major. Nonetheless, the catfish typically erects long, toxic pectoral and dorsal spines that increase prey-handling times for the snake by around eightfold. Because the catfish travel in swarms of closely-related individuals, the delay enforced by spines may enable the victim's swarm-mates to disperse before the snake is able to search for another meal. In keeping with that hypothesis, defensive spines tend to be longer in catfish from regions where the greater sea snake occurs, than from areas where the snake does not occur.  相似文献

Ink secretion of sea hares (Aplysia spp.), which is a mixture of co-released ink from the ink gland and opaline from the opaline gland, protects sea hares from predatory invertebrates through diverse mechanisms. These include both aversive or deterrent compounds and also high concentrations of amino acids that stimulate the predators' chemical senses and divert the attack through phagomimicry or sensory disruption. The aim of the present study was to examine if sea hares also defend themselves from predatory vertebrates by interacting with their chemical senses. We used sea catfish, Ariopsis felis, in behavioral and electrophysiological experiments. Behavioral tests on sea catfish show that ink is aversive: when ink is added to palatable food items (noodles with food flavoring), the noodles are no longer eaten, and when ink is added to noodles without food flavoring, the noodles are avoided more than unflavored noodles. Behavioral tests also show that opaline and the amino acid components of either opaline or ink are appetitive. Electrophysiological recordings of chemosensory neuronal activity in the olfactory epithelium and maxillary barbels show that the olfactory and gustatory systems of sea catfish are highly stimulated by ink and opaline, and that the amino acid components of ink and opaline significantly contribute to these responses. Compounds generated by the activity of escapin, an L-amino acid oxidase in the secretion, are moderately stimulatory to both olfactory and gustatory systems. Taken together, our results support the idea that sea hares are chemically defended from predatory sea catfish largely through unpalatable chemical deterrents in ink, but possibly also through amino acids stimulating olfactory and gustatory systems and thus functioning through phagomimicry or sensory disruption.  相似文献

Abstract— —Studies were undertaken to correlate the changes in the synthesis of brain nuclear RNA during olfactory stimulation in saltwater catfish ( Galeichthys felis ). Catfish allowed to swim for 1 hr in sea water containing morpholine (10−4 M) showed an increase in brain nuclear RNA and a change in base ratios in contrast to controls in plain sea water. These changes in brain nuclear RNA were reversed within 24 hr to the levels of unstimulated controls when morpholine stimulated fish were transferred to fresh sea water.
In a split-brain preparation in an isolated catfish head, one naris was washed with morpholine in sea water (10−6 M), while the other naris was washed with plain sea water. The stimulated half of the brain, compared to the unstimulated half, showed the same changes in nuclear RNA as those noted in free swimming catfish. Brain cytoplasmic fractions did not exhibit any changes in RNA following olfactory stimulation. Amyl acetate, shrimp extract, and extracts from red fish skin as odorants also elicited changes in brain nuclear RNA. With each odorant there was an increase in amount of RNA and also a change in base ratio, where the base ratio changes were different for each odorant tested. With camphor as an odorant, there was an increase in brain nuclear RNA, while with menthol as an odorant, there was a decrease in brain nuclear RNA. In both instances the base ratio of the RNA did not change in contrast to the controls. These studies suggest that olfactory stimulants affect a change in content and character of the RNA in brain nuclei, whereas irritants to the olfactory epithelium change the content of brain nuclear RNA but do not alter the base ratio.  相似文献

Salinity tolerance of young catfish, Clarias lazera (Burchell)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of young catfish, Claria lazera , to various saline concentrations. Young catfish, total length 52–88 mm, were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water (salinity = 0.14‰) to various salinities. Ninetyfour per cent survival occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water to 25% sea water (salinity = 9.5‰ No fish survived higher salinities even through gradual change.  相似文献

The development of comet assay for aquatic organisms is of particular relevance in light of the importance of coastal fisheries to several countries around the world. Two of the most common fish species native to southern Brazil are the gray mullet (Mugil sp.) and sea catfish (Netuma sp.) for which we have produced a standardized comet assay using whole erythrocytes taken from samples of these fish. We investigated the potential of the comet assay for monitoring genotoxicity in mullet and sea catfish and made a preliminary investigation of the baseline levels of DNA damage in the erythrocytes of samples of these fish from non-polluted areas as well as assessing the in vitro sensitivity of erythrocyte exposed to 2, 4 and 8 x 10(-5) M of methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) for 1, 2, 6 and 24h at 25 and 37 degrees C. Our results show that there was an increase in baseline DNA damage at higher temperatures and that the amount of MMS-induced DNA damage also increased at higher temperatures and that there was a clear dose/time response to treatment with MMS. To assess the possibility of using fish for environmental biomonitoring we also used the comet assay to investigate the in vitro genotoxic effect of MMS on whole blood cells from human donors and found a clear concentration-related effect at all exposure times, findings which agree with those of other workers. This study demonstrates the potential application of the comet assay to erythrocytes of mullets and sea catfish. However, these findings also suggest that temperature could alter both baseline DNA damage in untreated animals and in vitro cell sensitivity towards genotoxic pollutants.  相似文献

Anaerobic bacteria tentatively identified as species of Catenabacterium were recovered from brain, liver, kidney and blood of fish involved in a massive epizootic of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and redfish (Sciaenops ocellata). Pathogenicity was demonstrated for grey mullet (M. cephalus) and sea catfish (Arius felis) but not for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) or white mice. Diseased fish were disoriented, weak and swimming at the surface of the water. Thioglycolate and salt bovine blood agar containing 40 microg/ml gentamicin were useful as selective culture media.  相似文献

Neotetraonchus Bravo-Hollis, 1968 is revised and reassigned to the Dactylogyridae Bychowsky, 1933 based on examinations of specimens representing four species from the gill lamellae of sea catfishes (Ariidae). The monotypic Neotetraonchidae Bravo-Hollis, 1968 is placed in synonymy with the Dactylogyridae. Neotetraonchus bychowskyi Bravo-Hollis, 1968 (type-species), is redescribed from the tete sea catfish Ariopsis seemanni (Günther) (type-host) in the eastern Pacific Ocean off Panama (new geographical record). Neotetraonchus vegrandis n. sp. is described from the blue sea catfish A. guatemalensis (Günther) off the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Neotetraonchus bravohollisae Paperna, 1977 is redescribed from the hardhead sea catfish A. felis (L.) in the Gulf of Mexico off the Yucatan Peninsula. Neotetraonchus felis (Hargis, 1955) Paperna, 1977 is redescribed from A. felis in the Gulf of Mexico off Mississippi and the Yucatan Peninsula (new geographical record). Morphological similarities between species of Neotetraonchus suggest the likely presence of geminate species pairs flanking the Isthmus of Panama.

A method is reported for the separation of S-adenosyl-3-methylthiopropylamine and other basic compounds in the eye of the sea catfish (Arius felis) by ion-exchange chromatography on CM-Sephadex. One of the basic compounds was isolated in crystalline form and was shown to be S-adenosyl-3-thiopropylamine by chemical and spectroscopic characterizations and by comparison with a synthetic sample.  相似文献

The diet of channel catfish captured near the mouth of a channel carrying heated waters was not significantly different from the diet of catfish captured elsewhere in the same reservoir during the cool months of the year. In summer months, however, the diet of catfish captured near the effluent was significantly different from the diet of catfish from other locations and seemed to indicate that catfish were foraging in cool, deeper waters beneath the thermal plume.Department of Biological Sciences, North Texas State UniversityFinancial support for the study was provided by a Faculty Research Grant at North Texas State University.  相似文献

Thioredoxin acts as a B cell growth factor in channel catfish   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
To identify differentially expressed genes from channel catfish macrophages, a cDNA library from LPS-stimulated catfish macrophages was screened by subtractive hybridization. This screening yielded a 552-bp cDNA coding for catfish thioredoxin (CF-TRX). The deduced amino acid sequence revealed that CF-TRX contains 107 amino acids and is 59% homologous to human adult T cell leukemia-derived factor/TRX, originally described as an IL-2R alpha-inducing factor. Northern blot analyses showed that CF-TRX is expressed in catfish T and macrophage cell lines, but weakly in B cell lines. Similar results were also observed in Western blot analyses using a mAb specific for recombinant CF-TRX (rTRX). The use of rTRX in functional studies demonstrated that rTRX induces in vitro proliferative responses of catfish PBL that were synergistically enhanced by the addition of culture supernatants from catfish T cell lines. In addition, cell separation studies and flow cytometric analyses revealed that the cells proliferating in rTRX-stimulated cultures were mostly B cells. These results suggest that CF-TRX may have an important role in the activation and proliferation of channel catfish B cells.  相似文献

Neocalceostomoides brisbanensis sp. nov. from the gill arches, gill rakers and buccal lining of the blue catfish, Arius graeffei , is described. It is distinguished from the type species Neocalceostomoides arii (Unnithan, 1964) by the presence of a convoluted vas deferens with a blind-ending diverticulum; two lobes inside the vagina, each with ornamentation comprising rows of conical studs; two seminal receptacles and a post-testicular connection between the gut caeca. There is a closer resemblance to Neocalceostomoides spinivaginalis Lim, 1995, which also has vaginal lobes with ornamentations, but in N. spinivaginalis these ornamentations are elongated and spine-like and the penis tube and 'gubernaculum' are significantly longer. Neocalceostomoides brisbanensis was found on A. graeffei caught in Moreton Bay (sea water), Queensland, but not on catfish caught in the Brisbane River (fresh water). Some comments are made on the evolution and relationships of calceostomatines.  相似文献

Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) chetumalensis n. sp. is described from the stomach and intestine of the Mayan sea catfish Ariopsis assimilis (Günther, 1864), from the Bay of Chetumal, Quintana Roo, México. It is characterized by bifurcate deirids; males have 3 pairs of preanal papillae, 6 pairs of postanal papillae, 2 pairs of transverse elongate adanal papillae surrounding the cloacal aperture, wide caudal alae, spicules of unequal length, and a gubernaculum, and females have a rounded tail bearing a digit-like process terminating in 2 spines. This is the seventh Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) species reported from fishes in Mexico and the first one recorded in sea catfishes of the Ariidae.  相似文献

The family Ariidae, sea catfish of the order Siluriformes, is widely distributed throughout the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. The three species of Ariidae found on the coasts and estuaries of West Africa are the smoothmouth catfish Carlarius heudelotii (Valenciennes 1840), the rough-head catfish Carlarius latiscutatus (Günther 1864) and the Guinean sea catfish Carlarius parkii (Günther 1864). They have been increasingly exploited by artisanal and industrial coastal fisheries in recent decades, but there is still little information available on their ecology and biology. The aim of this study was to deepen our knowledge of these three West African Ariidae species based on a dataset collected between 1980 and 2013 during experimental fishing programmes. They were carried out in Mauritania in the Banc d'Arguin National Park, in Senegal in the Sine Saloum estuary including the Bamboung Marine Protected Area (MPA), in The Gambia in the Gambia estuary, in Guinea-Bissau in the Urok Islands MPA in the Bijagos archipelago, in Guinea in the Fatala estuary and Dangara inlet, and in Côte d'Ivoire in the Ebrié Lagoon. C. latiscutatus accounted for 65%, C. parkii for 29% and C. heudelotii for 6% of total number of Ariidae sampled. C. latiscutatus was abundant in the Sine Saloum and Gambia estuaries as well as in Guinea and Guinea-Bissau and was the only species present in the Ebrié Lagoon. C. parkii was in the majority in Mauritania. The three species were recorded in a salinity range of 0 to 50, a temperature range of 19 to 34°C, in areas 1.7 to 15 m depth, and transparency ranging from 0.1 to 4 m (Secchi disk depth). C. heudelotii was present in less saline (25 vs. 32–34), less warm (27 vs. 29°C) and less transparent (0.8 m vs. 1.6 m) waters than the two other species. The maximum sizes (453 mm, 614 mm and 525 mm for, respectively, C. heudelotii, C. latiscutatus and C. parkii) were comparable to those recorded at sea. Length–weight relationships calculated for each species showed b coefficients greater than 3. Sex ratios were always in favour of females. The number of mature individuals and their smallest size at maturity were calculated per species, sex and study area. A size of 27–28 cm at first maturity was estimated for females of C. latiscutatus. A few dozen records made it possible to describe fecundity and cases of oral incubation by females. The diet of the three species was composed of crustaceans, fish and molluscs, confirming their classification as generalist predators. Thanks to their high environmental tolerance, these sea catfish populations are able to occupy both the continental shelf and adjacent estuaries throughout their life cycle, with the exception of spawning, which generally takes place at sea.  相似文献

A 2.5 kb full-length cDNA clone of a channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) Mx gene was obtained using RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from RNA extracted from the liver of poly I:C stimulated channel catfish. The gene consists of an open reading frame of 1905 nucleotides encoding a 635 amino acid protein. The predicted protein is 72.5 kDa and contains the dynamin family signature, a tripartite GTP binding motif and a leucine zipper, characteristic of all known Mx proteins. The catfish Mx protein exhibited 79% identity with perch Mx and between 71% and 74% identity with the three Atlantic salmon and the three rainbow trout Mx proteins. Mx mRNA was constitutively expressed in channel catfish ovary (CCO) cells, but in higher quantities in response to poly I:C treatment. Mx was induced in channel catfish following injection with channel catfish virus (CCV) and poly I:C.  相似文献

Grazing catfish, fishing birds, and attached algae in a Panamanian stream   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Synopsis In streams where algivorous fishes abound, striking variation of attached algae often develops along depth gradients, with bands of high standing crops in shallow water (<20 cm) and sparse standing crops on deeper substrates. Experimental results from a stream in central Panama support the hypothesis that vertical variation in algal standing crops arises when grazing fishes avoid predators in shallow water by forgoing food resources that accumulate there. When 38 rocks bearing algae in a stream in central Panama were transferred from shallow (<20 cm) to deeper (>20 cm) water, algae were rapidly consumed by grazing catfish. Catfish were removed from three stream pools and left in place in three control pools. Ten days after catfish removal, algal standing crops in deep and shallow areas of removal pools were similar, while algal standing crops were higher in shallow than in deep areas of control pools. Catfish were exposed to fishing birds in open-topped enclosures. In one of three series of these pens, most catfish in shallow pens (10 and 20 cm) disappeared after 14 days, while catfish in deeper pens (30 and 50 cm) did not. Other groups of catfish which were caged 8 days showed differences in behavior depending on whether they had been fed or starved. After their release into their home pool, starved catfish spent more time feeding than did fed catfish. Despite their apparently increased hunger levels, starved catfish did not venture into shallow water to obtain algae. These results support the view that predator induced avoidance by grazers of certain areas can produce spatial pattern in the flora of flowing water communities.  相似文献

With the use of microelectrode techniques (extracellular recordings) and the method of post-stimulus histograms, the functional characteristics of medulla oblongata neurons of sea catfish Plotosus were investigated under stimulation of electroreceptors by a homogeneous electric field of different duration, intensity, and direction. Two types of the cells possessing, accordingly, tonic or phase activity were registered among 66 neurons investigated. The mode of responses (inhibition or acceleration) of tonic neurons to the direction of the applied electric current is typical for central neurons of fresh-water catfish connected with ampullae's electroreceptors. Neurons showing a substantial response to fields of an intensity less than 1 microV/cm were registered. The reactions were most pronounced with the duration of electric stimuli in the range of 20-200 ms; however, particularly sensitive neurons showed distinct responses to stimuli of duration of 5 and even 2 ms. Thus, for the first time a high sensitivity of ampullae's electroreceptors to high-frequency stimulus was discovered, which allows one to expand the range of studying electric signals used by weakly electric fish for electrolocation and communication.  相似文献
