Stochasticity accelerates nematode egg development   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Day-degrees models of nematode development assume that temperature stochasticity has no effect on the development rate of infective stages as long as the mean temperature is held constant. This assumption was tested in this study. Unembryonated Heterakis gallinarum eggs were subjected to nocturnal and diurnal daily temperature cycles at 12 and 17 C. respectively, and embryonation was compared with eggs subjected to similar stochastic daily cycles, in which random normal variations in the temperature were added to the 2 temperatures. The prediction that there is no effect of stochasticity was refuted. Embryonation of eggs subjected to variable daily cycles occurred significantly earlier than that of eggs subjected to deterministic daily cycles, suggesting that stochastic variation in temperature accelerated embryonation even though mean temperatures were the same. These findings show that the development time of H. gallnarum eggs is decreased by stochastic variation in temperature, which may have important implications for the effects of climate change on parasite availability.  相似文献

We present here the first recorded age-specific estimates of the developmental response to temperature in diapausing gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.). The effect of temperature on diapause development in gypsy moth eggs was examined by exposing individual eggs to temperature regimes of 5 degrees C interrupted by a single, brief exposure to an experimental temperature. Exposure to each of six experimental temperatures took place at six different times during diapause. The relative effect of the exposure on diapause development was estimated by comparing the duration of diapause in each of the treatments to the duration in a control treatment of constant 5 degrees C. The effect of each temperature did not remain constant throughout the diapause phase and the pattern of change was not uniform among the experimental temperatures. We propose a model of diapause where the developmental phase is controlled by two simultaneous temperature-dependent processes: a typical developmental response to temperature that is inhibited by a temperature-activated biochemical agent, and the temperature-dependent removal of the inhibiting agent. This simple model of two simultaneous and temperature-dependent processes explains 92% of the variability in diapause duration observed in the experimental regimes.  相似文献

The influence of temperature and humidity on the survival and development of Toxocara canis eggs in an in vitro model system was investigated. Two soil samples were inoculated with T. canis eggs and maintained at 3% and 50% humidity and temperatures of 19-24 degrees C. Nine soil samples were inoculated with T. canis eggs of which three samples were kept at 4 degrees C with humidities at 3%, 15%, and 30%; three were maintained at 21 degrees C and three more were incubated at 34 degrees C, and at the same three humidity levels. Samples were monitored every 7 days for a total of 2 months, for the presence and development of eggs. With increasing temperature, the number of eggs undergoing development increased (P<0.01); the number of deformed eggs decreased, the number of infective eggs increased (P<0.01), and egg maturation was accelerated. A decrease in the survival of infective eggs occurred at 34 degrees C. An increase in humidity produced a rise in the number of developed eggs at all three temperatures (P<0.01). This study suggests that elevated temperatures accelerated the development as well as the degradation of eggs of T. canis, whereas the range in humidity was directly correlated with egg development.  相似文献

We incubated eggs of Calotes versicolor at four constant temperatures ranging from 24 degrees C to 33 degrees C to assess the effects of incubation temperature on hatching success, embryonic use of energy, and hatchling phenotypes that are likely to affect fitness. All viable eggs increased in mass throughout incubation due to absorption of water, and mass gain during incubation was dependent on initial egg mass and incubation temperature. The average duration of incubation at 24 degrees C, 27 degrees C, 30 degrees C, and 33 degrees C was 82.1 days, 60.5 days, 51.4 days, and 50.3 days, respectively. Incubation temperature affected hatching success, energy expenditure for embryonic development, and several hatchling traits examined, but it did not affect the sex ratio of hatchlings. Hatching success was lowest (3.4%) at 33 degrees C, but a higher incidence of deformed embryos was recorded from eggs incubated at this temperature compared to eggs incubated at lower temperatures. Most of the deformed embryos died at the last stage of incubation. Energy expenditure for embryonic development was, however, higher in eggs incubated at 33 degrees C than those similarly incubated at lower temperatures. A prolonged exposure of eggs of C. versicolor at 33 degrees C appears to have an adverse and presumably lethal effect on embryonic development. Hatching success at 24 degrees C was also low (43.3%), but hatchlings incubated at 24 degrees C did not differ in any of the examined traits from those incubated at two intermediate temperatures (27 degrees C and 30 degrees C). Hatchlings incubated at 33 degrees C were smaller (snout-vent length, SVL) than those incubated at lower incubation temperatures and had larger mass residuals (from the regression on SVL) as well as shorter head length, hindlimb length, tympanum diameter, and eye diameter relative to SVL. Hatchlings from 33 degrees C had significantly lower scores on the first axis of a principal component analysis representing mainly SVL-free head size (length and width) and fore- and hindlimb lengths, but they had significantly higher scores on the second axis mainly representing SVL-free wet body mass. Variation in the level of fluctuating asymmetry in eye diameter associated with incubation temperatures was quite high, and it was clearly consistent with the prediction that environmental stress associated with the highest incubation temperatures might produce the highest level of asymmetry. Newly emerged hatchlings exhibited sexual dimorphism in head width, with male hatchlings having larger head width than females.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the rates of development and hatching of artificially fertilized eggs of the scad, Trachurus trachurus L., was studied using a thermal gradient incubator. Development of eggs through to hatching occurred within the temperature range 10.5–21.2° C, with greatest survival between 12.2 and 15.8° C. The mean egg diameter was 0.94 mm and mean length of larvae on hatching 2.46 mm. Regressions of development time on mean incubation temperature are presented. The data are compared with those reported in the literature and related to sea temperatures in scad spawning grounds.  相似文献

1. Paratya australiensis egg and clutch sizes vary between lower and upper altitude sites within headwater streams of the Conondale Range, Queensland, Australia. The adaptive significance of this variation is examined by comparing the development of large eggs from upper sites with small eggs from lower sites at ambient temperatures in the laboratory. 2. Embryonic duration was not dependent on egg size, but was a function of temperature (28 days at 18 °C, but only 22 days at 21 °C). However, larvae developing from large eggs were significantly larger at all stages of development, larval duration was shorter and growth rate was faster than that of larvae from small eggs. 3. It is suggested that the larger, more rapidly developing larvae at upper altitude sites have a greater chance of maintaining position within headwater sections of the stream. This is important as physical barriers such as waterfalls may severely restrict upstream movement. At lower altitude sites, maintaining position may not be as critical as there are no major barriers to upstream movement following downstream displacement. The influence of temperature may also be important as larger eggs may be an adaptation to compensate for slower development of eggs and larvae at cooler, upper altitude sites. The advantage in completing larval development quickly is that larvae would have less risk of removal by spates occurring late in the breeding season.  相似文献

【目的】沙葱萤叶甲Galeruca daurica(Joannis)是近年来在内蒙古草原暴发成灾的一种新害虫,以卵在牛粪、石块及草丛下越冬,了解其越冬卵的抗寒能力有助于预测其分布范围及种群数量动态。【方法】在室内测定了沙葱萤叶甲越冬卵在不同低温条件下(-18~-39℃)暴露12和24 h及在-30℃低温条件下暴露不同时间(0~60 d)的存活率以及存活卵的发育历期。【结果】低温强度和暴露时间对沙葱萤叶甲越冬卵的存活率有显著影响,随着温度的降低和暴露时间的延长,越冬卵的存活率降低。当温度≤-33℃暴露12 h或≤-30℃暴露24 h,越冬卵存活率显著低于其相应的对照(25℃)。越冬卵低温暴露12和24 h的致死中温度(LT50)分别为-33.08和-32.13℃,在-30℃下的致死中时间(Lt50)为33.33 d。经-36℃低温暴露12 h或≤-33℃低温暴露24 h后,存活的越冬卵发育历期显著延长,而-30℃低温暴露30 d内差异不显著。【结论】沙葱萤叶甲越冬卵抗寒能力强,冬季低温通常不会造成越冬卵的大量死亡。  相似文献

The adverse effects of high temperatures on the early life stages of anadromous whitefish Coregonus lavaretus were experimentally examined by assessing fertilization success, the percentage of developmental abnormalities, cumulative mortality and the rate of embryogenesis across a range of temperatures. Temperatures ≥ 7° C increased the proportion of unfertilized and abnormally dividing eggs, deformed embryos and consequent mortality. The higher the temperature, the more severe were the effects. When eggs were fertilized and constantly incubated at various temperatures, the effective level for 50% of the eggs and embryos (EL50) of temperature was 7·6° C at the developmental stage when eye pigmentation was visible. Fewer developmental abnormalities and a lower cumulative mortality rate were observed when embryos were exposed to high temperatures from the later, gastrula stage, than from fertilization or the four‐cell stage. Irrespective of retarded development in terms of day‐degrees (i.e. the sum of daily mean temperatures), a high incubation temperature reduced the development time of C. lavaretus, leading to earlier hatching, and hatched fry were shorter than at the reference temperature of 4–5° C. Global warming will particularly pose risks for stenothermic species such as C. lavaretus, with early life stages being especially susceptible. Thus, relatively small increases and fluctuations in river water temperatures during the spawning season of this anadromous species may have substantial negative impacts on its recruitment and population persistence.  相似文献

Since host defenses to infectious disease are often costly, one would expect hosts to use their defenses only when the threat of infection is high. Southern leopard frogs (Rana sphenocephala) at Ellenton Bay in South Carolina (USA) have an extended breeding season and their eggs are exposed to a wide range of temperatures depending on the time of year when they are laid. Adults aggregate their egg masses in cold temperatures, but separate them in warm temperatures. The spatial aggregation of egg masses may insulate eggs from cold temperatures, but may also affect the transmission of pathogens between the eggs. I examined the effects of temperature, pathogens, and spatial distribution on the survival of R. sphenocephala in the egg stage. Field observations found that temperature had little effect on the number of infected eggs within egg masses, but that egg masses in colder water were more likely to be aggregated together. In a controlled laboratory experiment, the presence of aquatic oomycetes led to higher mortality in cold temperatures than they did at warmer temperatures. Infectious disease may be a selective force that favors R. sphenocephala adults that aggregate their offspring when the threat of disease is high. Host aggregation can reduce the risk of infection when pathogens have a slow generation time that hinders them from responding to an abundance of hosts.  相似文献

Summary Eggs of Ecdyonurus picteti from the Herrnalmbach and Seebach, and E. venosus and Rhithrogena cf. hybrida from the Seebach were fertilized artificially and kept at fluctuating temperatures (range 2.8°–18.1° C) in the laboratory. The percentage of eggs that hatched at each sinusoidal temperature cycle ranged from 0 to 49% and values were similar to those obtained for eggs reared under constant temperature conditions. The hatching time (days after fertilization for 10, 50% and 90% of the eggs to hatch) decreased with increasing temperature and the relationship between the two variables was well described by a powerlaw within the range 2.8°–18.1° C for E. venosus. A similar relationship has been found for the effect of constant temperature on the hatching time of eggs of E. venosus. It appears that the effect of temperature on the rate of change in the hatching time and the rate of development is approximately similar for both constant and fluctuating temperatures.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of temperature and relative humidity on population growth and development of the psocid Lepinotus reticulatus Enderlein. Part of this study assessed the effects of marking psocids by using methylene blue, chalk powder, and fluorescent powder to differentiate nymphal stages during development. We found that marking psocids by using methylene blue increased mortality and took twice as long to accomplish compared with marking by using fluorescent powder. Using chalk powder shortened the duration of third and fourth nymphal instars. Marking psocids by using fluorescent powder had no effect on mortality or duration of nymphal instars. Therefore, we recommend using fluorescent powder for marking psocids. L. reticulatus did not survive at 32, 43, and 55% RH, whereas populations increased from 22.5 to 32.5 degrees C at 75% RH. The largest population growth was recorded at 30 and 32.5 degrees C, whereas only 9% of nymphs developed to adults and populations declined at 35 degrees C. We developed temperature-dependent developmental equations for eggs, individual nymphal, combined nymphal, and combined immature stages. These equations showed predicted optimal temperatures for the development of eggs, combined nymphal, and combined immature stages to be 32.3, 34.5, and 34.4 degrees C, respectively; development at these temperatures was completed in 6.3, 16.7, and 23.3 d, respectively. Our study shows that psocids that consume their exuviae develop faster than those that do not, and this effect is more pronounced at lower temperatures. These data give us better understanding of L. reticulatus population dynamics, and they can be used to develop effective management strategies for this psocid.  相似文献

In Eobiana engelhardti subtropica, early laid eggs reach the diapause stage in early autumn. For long periods before winter, the eggs are exposed to temperatures higher than their theoretical lower threshold for development. In contrast, late-laid eggs cannot reach their diapause stage before winter. Our study showed that E. e. subtropica copes with these difficulties via the thermal response involving embryonic diapause. In this katydid, the almost fully developed embryo undergoes an obligatory diapause. When diapause eggs were maintained at a temperature of 20 degrees C or higher, diapause persisted for a long time. Diapause was effectively terminated by temperatures ranging from 1 to 11 degrees C, and hatching occurred successfully at temperatures from 11 to 15 degrees C. In addition to the chilling temperature, pre-chilling temperature modified diapause intensity and hatching time. Diapause eggs hatched earlier after chilling when the pre-chilling temperature was lower, within a range of 14.5-25 degrees C. Thus, the low-temperature requirement for diapause termination prevents early laid eggs from untimely hatching in autumn, and low temperatures before and during winter decrease diapause intensity and shorten the hatching time in the following spring. When eggs were chilled before diapause, they tolerated chilling and averted diapause. Thus, even if eggs encounter low temperatures before diapause, they can hatch in the following spring.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The eggs of a planktonic, predatory water mile Piona exigua Viets were reared in the laboratory at constant temperatures ranging from 10°C to 280C. Egg development rates increased with increase in temperature.
2. Five models describing the effect of temperature on egg development times were fitted to the data.
3. The variances of the egg hatching times at each temperature differed widely, but these variances were not made more equal by In-transformation.
4. A simple power curve, fitted to the raw data, accounted for ≥.97% of the variation in the data. Two further models, both of which included a third parameter, provided a better fit at the temperature extremes.
5. Close examination of the patterns of variance at difference temperatures may provide information relating to the pattern of emergence of aquatic poikilotherms.

Capelin (Mallotus villosus) displays alternative reproductive modes throughout its circumpolar distribution. This predicts divergent thermohaline tolerance of eggs because they are incubated in either a steady offshore or variable intertidal environment. We investigate herein thermohaline tolerance of eggs from the offshore spawning Barents Sea capelin. Subsequently, we compare our data with those previously published on other offshore and intertidal spawning capelin populations across the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, with the aim of determining possible patterns in the thermohaline tolerance of eggs from the alternative reproductive modes. In a 2?×?4 factorial design various combinations of salinities and temperatures had only negligible effect on the survival of eggs until first hatch. The embryonic development rate from fertilisation until first hatch across populations and between the two reproductive modes suggested non-local thermohaline tolerance towards the physical factors during development. Finally, no differences were observed in salinity tolerance from fertilisation to first hatch between populations representing different reproductive modes. The present findings demonstrate wide thermohaline tolerance of capelin eggs regardless of population origin and reproductive mode.  相似文献

Thermistors and an amplified bridge were used to detect supercooling points of Nematodirus battus eggs weighing ca. 1 microgram wet weight. A cooling rate of about 1 C min-1 was achieved with a manually controlled cold stage using the Peltier effect. The supercooling point of eggs fell during chilling at 5 +/- 1 C for up to 8 weeks from -34.48 +/- 0.49 C to -37.17 +/- 0.76 C. Juveniles freed from these eggs were less cold hardy than intact eggs but chilling improved their supercooling to a greater extent from -19.33 +/- 1.38 C to -32.10 +/- 0.68 C. These results were obtained with eggs showing the characteristic hatching response for this species after transfer from chilling at 5 C to higher temperatures (5-37 +/- 1 C). The results indicate eggs of N. battus acclimate to chilling at a time when previous work had established an increase in their trehalose content.  相似文献
