Classic ecological theory suggests that resource partitioning facilitates the coexistence of species by reducing inter-specific competition. A byproduct of this process is an increase in overall community function, because a greater spectrum of resources can be used. In contrast, coexistence facilitated by neutral mechanisms is not expected to increase function. We studied coexistence in laboratory microcosms of the bactivorous ciliates Paramecium aurelia and Colpidium striatum to understand the relationship between function and coexistence mechanism. We quantified population and community-level function (biomass and oxygen consumption), competitive interactions, and resource partitioning. The two ciliates partitioned their bacterial resource along a size axis, with the larger ciliate consuming larger bacteria than the smaller ciliate. Despite this, there was no gain in function at the community level for either biomass or oxygen consumption, and competitive effects were symmetrical within and between species. Because other potential coexistence mechanisms can be ruled out, it is likely that inter-specific interference competition diminished the expected gain in function generated by resource partitioning, leading to a system that appeared competitively neutral even when structured by niche partitioning. We also analyzed several previous studies where two species of protists coexisted and found that the two-species communities showed a broad range of biomass levels relative to the single-species states.  相似文献

Evolutionary consequences of thermally varying environments were studied in the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. Replicated lines were propagated for 60 days, a maximum of 500 generations, in stable, slowly fluctuating (red spectrum), and rapidly fluctuating (blue spectrum) temperatures. The red and blue fluctuations had a dominant period length of 15 days and two hours, respectively. The mean temperature of all time series was 25 degrees C and the fluctuating temperatures had the same minimum (10 degrees C), maximum (40 degrees C), and variance. During the experiment, population sizes and biomasses were monitored at three-day intervals. After the experiment, carrying capacity and maximum growth rate were measured at low (15 degrees C), intermediate (25 degrees C), and high (35 degrees C) temperatures for each experimental line. Physiological changes in the lines were assessed by measuring the expression of stress-induced heat shock protein Hsp90 at 25 degrees C, 35 degrees C, and 39 degrees C. Population sizes and biomasses showed no differences between stable, blue, or red temperature treatments during the experiment. Also, after the experiment, mean carrying capacities and maximum growth rates were comparable in the stable, blue, and red temperature treatments. The expression of Hsp90 was higher in lines from the blue environment than in lines from the stable environment. Lines from the red environment had an intermediate level of Hsp90 expression. This supports the hypothesis that inducible thermotolerance and expression of canalizing genes can evolve in response to rapidly varying environments. Furthermore, we found correlative evidence of benefits and disadvantages of high Hsp90 expression. Lines with high expression of Hsp90 had an increased growth rate at the highest temperature when food resources were not limiting growth. At low and intermediate temperatures the same lines had the lowest carrying capacities.  相似文献

1. The interaction between mutualism, facilitation or interference and exploitation competition is of major interest as it may govern species coexistence. However, the interplay of these mechanisms has received little attention. This issue dates back to Gause, who experimentally explored competition using protists as a model [Gause, G.F. (1935) Vérifications expérimentales de la théorie mathématique de la lutte pour la vie. Actualités Scientifiques et Industrielles, 277]. He showed the coexistence of Paramecium caudatum with a potentially allelopathic species, Paramecium bursaria. 2. Paramecium bursaria hosts the green algae Chlorella vulgaris. Therefore, P. bursaria may benefit from carbohydrates synthesised by the algae. Studying endosymbiosis with P. bursaria is possible as it can be freed of its endosymbiont. In addition, C. vulgaris is known to produce allelochemicals, and P. bursaria may benefit also from allelopathic compounds. 3. We designed an experiment to separate the effects of resource exploitation, endosymbiosis and allelopathy and to assess their relative importance for the coexistence of P. bursaria with a competitor that exploits the same resource, bacteria. The experiment was repeated with two competitors, Colpidium striatum or Tetrahymena pyriformis. 4. Results show that the presence of the endosymbiont enables the coexistence of competitors, while its loss leads to competitive exclusion. These results are in agreement with predictions based on resource equilibrium density of monocultures (R*) supporting the idea that P. bursaria's endosymbiont is a resource provider for its host. When P. bursaria and T. pyriformis coexist, the density of the latter shows large variation that match the effects of culture medium of P. bursaria. Our experiment suggests these effects are because of biochemicals produced in P. bursaria culture. 5. Our results expose the hidden diversity of mechanisms that underlie competitive interactions. They thus support Gauses's speculation (1935) that allelopathic effects might have been involved in his competition experiments. We discuss how a species engaged both in competition for a resource and in costly interference such as allelopathy may counterbalance these costs with a resource-provider endosymbiont.  相似文献

Environmental fluctuations are important for parasite spread and persistence. However, the effects of the spatial and temporal structure of environmental fluctuations on host–parasite dynamics are not well understood. Temporal fluctuations can be random but positively autocorrelated, such that the environment is similar to the recent past (red noise), or random and uncorrelated with the past (white noise). We imposed red or white temporal temperature fluctuations on experimental metapopulations of Paramecium caudatum, experiencing an epidemic of the bacterial parasite Holospora undulata. Metapopulations (two subpopulations linked by migration) experienced fluctuations between stressful (5°C) and permissive (23°C) conditions following red or white temporal sequences. Spatial variation in temperature fluctuations was implemented by exposing subpopulations to the same (synchronous temperatures) or different (asynchronous temperatures) temporal sequences. Red noise, compared with white noise, enhanced parasite persistence. Despite this, red noise coupled with asynchronous temperatures allowed infected host populations to maintain sizes equivalent to uninfected populations. It is likely that this occurs because subpopulations in permissive conditions rescue declining subpopulations in stressful conditions. We show how patterns of temporal and spatial environmental fluctuations can impact parasite spread and host population abundance. We conclude that accurate prediction of parasite epidemics may require realistic models of environmental noise.  相似文献

Partitioning of the niche space is a mechanism used to explain the coexistence of similar species. Ectotherms have variable body temperatures and their body temperatures influence performance and, ultimately, fitness. Therefore, many ectotherms use behavioral thermoregulation to avoid reduced capacities associated with body temperatures far from the optimal temperature for performance. Several authors have proposed that thermal niche partitioning in response to interspecific competition is a mechanism that allows the coexistence of similar species of ectotherms. We reviewed studies on thermal resource partitioning to evaluate the evidence for this hypothesis. In almost all studies, there was insufficient evidence to conclude unequivocally that thermal resource partitioning allowed species coexistence. Future studies should include sites where species are sympatric and sites where they are allopatric to rule out alternative mechanisms that cause differences in thermal traits between coexisting species. There is evidence of conservatism in the evolution of most thermal traits across a wide range of taxa, but thermal performance curves and preferred temperatures do respond to strong selection under laboratory conditions. Thus, there is potential for selection to act on thermal traits in response to interspecific competition. Nevertheless, more stringent tests of the thermal resource partitioning hypothesis are required before we can assess whether it is widespread in communities of ectotherms in nature.  相似文献

Competition, predation and species responses to environmental change   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Despite much effort over the past decade on the ecological consequences of global warming, ecologists still have little understanding of the importance of interspecific interactions in species responses to environmental change. Models predict that predation should mitigate species responses to environmental change, and that interspecific competition should aggravate species responses to environmental change. To test this prediction, we studied how predation and competition affected the responses of two ciliates, Colpidium striatum and Paramecium tetraurelia , to temperature change in laboratory microcosms. We found that neither predation nor competition altered the responses of Colpidium striatum to temperature change, and that competition but not predation altered the responses of Paramecium tetraurelia to temperature change. Asymmetric interactions and temperature-dependent interactions may have contributed to the disparity between model predictions and experimental results. Our results suggest that models ignoring inherent complexities in ecological communities may be inadequate in forecasting species responses to environmental change.  相似文献

Food web structure and the strength of transient indirect effects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Jeremy W. Fox  Erik Olsen 《Oikos》2000,90(2):219-226
The relative importance of direct and indirect effects in ecological communities remains unresolved. Indirect effects may diminish as they propagate through highly reticulate food webs. We tested this hypothesis by assembling replicate food webs of different complexity in laboratory microcosms, and comparing the transmission of indirect effects through these webs. By providing the top predator ( Didinium ) with either one ( Paramecium ) or two ( Paramecium and Colpidium ) species of protists as prey, we created linear or reticulate food webs where we could examine the transient response of predators to an indirect effect. Addition of Chlamydomonas , a small alga consumed by Paramecium , but not by Colpidium , perturbed the system and generated an indirect effect on Didinium . We expected the proportional response of Didinium to Chlamydomonas addition would be smaller in the reticulate web containing alternative, unperturbed prey ( Colpidium ). We measured predator response as predator yield, the maximum number of predators produced prior to overexploitation of prey and subsequent predator decline. The ratio of yield in perturbed bottles to yield in unperturbed bottles measures the proportional response of Didinium to Chlamydomonas addition. We expected this ratio to be smaller with Colpidium present. Contrary to expectations, alternative prey enhanced rather than diminished predator response to the perturbation. This resulted from competition between the prey species, a factor ignored in some simple verbal arguments. Food web complexity may have unanticipated consequences for the strength of indirect effects.  相似文献

The heterophagic pathway of the digestive-lysosomal system in axenically grown Paramecium caudatum is divisible into vacuole formation, vacuole acidification-condensation, lysosomal fusion-digestion and defecation. These four processes can be separated in time, thus permitting the study of the effects of temperature on each process. The optimal growth temperature for this cell was 27 degrees C. The rate of digestive vacuole (DV) formation at varying temperatures was represented by a skewed bell-shaped curve having an optimum between 28 and 30 degrees C. The time course for the acidification-condensation step was lengthened below 26 degrees C, but was not accelerated above this temperature. The rate but not the extent of vacuole condensation was decreased at 19 and 22 degrees C. Temperature increase above 22 degrees C shortened, slightly, the duration of the lysosomal fusion-digestion process, whereas below 22 degrees C small temperature decreases greatly extended this period. Within a given experiment the rates of defecation were proportional to temperatures above 17 degrees C. However, these rates varied widely among different experiments. Interestingly, the activation energies for both the formation and defecation processes averaged 19 kcal/mol. Furthermore, Paramecium appeared to readily adapt to environmental temperature changes, since the length of the processing periods and the rates of defecation were similar in cells with or without a 24 h acclimation. These results indicated that the four processes in the digestive cycle in P. caudatum are distinct but each is energy-dependent.  相似文献

Understanding long‐term coexistence of numerous competing species is a longstanding challenge in ecology. Progress requires determining which processes and species differences are most important for coexistence when multiple processes operate and species differ in many ways. Modern coexistence theory (MCT), formalised by Chesson, holds out the promise of doing that, but empirical applications remain scarce. We argue that MCT's mathematical complexity and subtlety have obscured the simplicity and power of its underlying ideas and hindered applications. We present a general computational approach that extends our previous solution for the storage effect to all of standard MCT's spatial and temporal coexistence mechanisms, and also process‐defined mechanisms amenable to direct study such as resource partitioning, indirect competition, and life history trade‐offs. The main components are a method to partition population growth rates into contributions from different mechanisms and their interactions, and numerical calculations in which some mechanisms are removed and others retained. We illustrate how our approach handles features that have not been analysed in the standard framework through several case studies: competing diatom species under fluctuating temperature, plant–soil feedbacks in grasslands, facilitation in a beach grass community, and niche differences with independent effects on recruitment, survival and growth in sagebrush steppe.  相似文献

The effects of acute and long-term changes in temperature upon catalytic and calcium regulatory function of red (slow oxidative) and white (fast glycolytic) muscle from striped bass (Morone saxatilis) were determined. Acclimation to 5 degrees C or 25 degrees C had no significant effect on catalytic function (ATPase activity) or regulatory sensitivity (Ca++-activation) of myofibrils from either muscle type. Substantial differences between red and white muscle were found in the intrinsic thermal sensitivity of maximally-activated Mg++-Ca++ myofibrillar ATPase. Arrhenius plots of myofibrillar ATPase from white muscle show one significant breakpoint at 29 degrees C, with activation energies (Ea) of 2.3 and 23.4 kcal mole-1 at temperatures above and below this transition, respectively. Arrhenius plots of myofibrillar ATPase from red muscle show two transitions occurring at 22 and 9 degrees C, with Ea of 7.6 kcal mole-1 above 22 degrees C and 18.3 kcal mole-1 between 9 and 22 degrees C. Activation energies for myofibrils from red muscle increase substantially to approximately 107.3 kcal mole-1 below the 9 degrees C breakpoint. Differences in the intrinsic thermal sensitivity of red and white muscle catalytic function are apparently due to interaction of actomyosins and calcium regulatory proteins which are specific to each muscle type. The results suggest that capacity for sustained swimming in striped bass, which is powered exclusively by red muscle, will be severely impaired at cold temperature unless compensations occur above the level of contractile proteins.  相似文献

Stochastic variability of key abiotic factors including temperature, precipitation and the availability of light and nutrients greatly influences species’ ecological function and evolutionary fate. Despite such influence, ecologists have typically ignored the effect of abiotic stochasticity on the structure and dynamics of ecological networks. Here we help to fill that gap by advancing the theory of how abiotic stochasticity, in the form of environmental noise, affects the population dynamics of species within food webs. We do this by analysing an allometric trophic network model of Lake Constance subjected to positive (red), negative (blue), and non‐autocorrelated (white) abiotic temporal variability (noise) introduced into the carrying capacity of basal species. We found that, irrespective of the colour of the introduced noise, the temporal variability of the species biomass within the network both reddens (i.e. its positive autocorrelation increases) and dampens (i.e. the magnitude of variation decreases) as the environmental noise is propagated through the food web by its feeding interactions from the bottom to the top. The reddening reflects a buffering of the noise‐induced population variability by complex food web dynamics such that non‐autocorrelated oscillations of noise‐free deterministic dynamics become positively autocorrelated. Our research helps explain frequently observed red variability of natural populations by suggesting that ecological processing of environmental noise through food webs with a range of species’ body sizes reddens population variability in nature.  相似文献

Data are presented that demonstrate the application of the neutral red retention assay (NRR) to monitor the effects of a bacterial inoculation on the haemocyte lysosomes of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and scallop Pecten maximus. Bivalves were acclimated to three temperature regimes (5, 15 and 25 degrees C), at constant salinity for 7 days in the laboratory. Once baseline responses to acclimation temperature had been established, the effects of an in vivo inoculation on haemocyte lysosomal stability were assessed using the NRR assay. Lysosomal membrane stability was reduced in the presence of bacteria for all three species of bivalve, but destabilisation of C. gigas haemocyte lysosomes appeared to be most sensitive to the presence of the bacterium Listonella anguillarum. For all three bivalve species, the reduction in lysosomal stability appeared to be proportional to the growth of the bacterial inoculate. Using appropriate controls, the NRR assay was demonstrated to have great potential as a tool with which to make rapid initial assessments of the immune status of bivalve molluscs.  相似文献

The thermoregulatory behavior of Hemigrapsus nudus, the amphibious purple shore crab, was examined in both aquatic and aerial environments. Crabs warmed and cooled more rapidly in water than in air. Acclimation in water of 16 degrees C (summer temperatures) raised the critical thermal maximum temperature (CTMax); acclimation in water of 10 degrees C (winter temperatures) lowered the critical thermal minimum temperature (CTMin). The changes occurred in both water and air. However, these survival regimes did not reflect the thermal preferences of the animals. In water, the thermal preference of crabs acclimated to 16 degrees C was 14.6 degrees C, and they avoided water warmer than 25.5 degrees C. These values were significantly lower than those of the crabs acclimated to 10 degrees C; these animals demonstrated temperature preferences for water that was 17 degrees C, and they avoided water that was warmer than 26.9 degrees C. This temperature preference was also exhibited in air, where 10 degrees C acclimated crabs exited from under rocks at a temperature that was 3.2 degrees C higher than that at which the 16 degrees C acclimated animals responded. This behavioral pattern was possibly due to a decreased thermal tolerance of 16 degrees C acclimated crabs, related with the molting process. H. nudus was better able to survive prolonged exposure to cold temperatures than to warm temperatures, and there was a trend towards lower exit temperatures with the lower acclimation (10 degrees C) temperature. Using a complex series of behaviors, the crabs were able to precisely control body temperature independent of the medium, by shuttling between air and water. The time spent in either air or water was influenced more strongly by the temperature than by the medium. In the field, this species may experience ranges in temperatures of up to 20 degrees C; however, it is able to utilize thermal microhabitats underneath rocks to maintain its body temperature within fairly narrow limits.  相似文献

Single-species populations of ciliates (Colpidium and Paramecium) experienced constant temperature or white or reddened temperature fluctuations in aquatic microcosms in order to test three hypotheses about how environmental colour influences population dynamics. (i) Models predict that the colour of population dynamics is tinged by the colour of the environmental variability. However, environmental colour had no effect on the colour of population dynamics. All population dynamics in this experiment were reddened, regardless of environmental colour. (ii) Models predict that populations will track reddened environmental variability more closely than white environmental variability and that populations with a higher intrinsic growth rate (r) will track environmental variability more closely than populations with a low r. The experimental populations behaved as predicted. (iii) Models predict that population variability is determined by interaction between r and the environmental variability. The experimental populations behaved as predicted. These results show that (i) reddened population dynamics may need no special explanation, such as reddened environments, spatial subdivision or interspecific interactions, and (ii) and (iii) that population dynamics are sensitive to environmental colour, in agreement with population models. Correct specification of the colour of the environmental variability in models is required for accurate predictions. Further work is needed to study the effects of environmental colour on communities and ecosystems.  相似文献

We investigated the implications of foliar hydration and terpene content on leaf flammability in two widely distributed forest species of the Mediterranean basin, Quercus ilex, which does not store terpenes, and Pinus halepensis, a terpene-storing species. The experiments were carried out in plants grown under different water regimes that generated a wide range of foliar hydration and terpene contents. We monitored the temperatures and time elapsed to reach the smoke, pyrolysis and flame phases. Smoke appeared much earlier (37 versus 101 s) and at lower temperatures (96 versus 139 degrees C) in Quercus ilex than in Pinus halepensis. Quercus ilex reached pyrolysis earlier than Pinus halepensis (278 versus 338 s) but at the same temperature (365-371 degrees C). There were no significant differences in time elapsed nor in temperature for flammability (386-422 s; 505-487 degrees C in both species). Quercus ilex had lower water hydration than Pinus halepensis (41 versus 100%) and the leaf content of terpenes in Quercus was three orders of magnitude lower. The results of this study show no differences in the flame phase between the two species and the absence of a significant relationship between temperature and elapsed time of the different flammability phases in relation to monoterpene content; thus indicating that the role of monoterpenes in flammability phases is smaller than that of the water content. This, however, does not exclude the effects of terpene content on plant combustibility and fire propagation once fires start.  相似文献

The behavioral thermoregulation of the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarki, was investigated in its burrow environment. In the field, air and water temperatures within crayfish burrows fluctuated less compared with surface temperatures in the Mojave Desert. However, crayfish could still experience sub-optimal temperature regimes inside burrows. In the laboratory, P. clarki heated and cooled more rapidly in water than in air. In a thermal gradient, the crayfish selected a water temperature of 22 degrees C and avoided water temperatures above 31 degrees C and below 12 degrees C. Observations of behavior in an artificial burrow showed that P. clarki displayed three main shuttling behaviors between water and air in response to temperature. The number of bilateral emersions and emigrations, as well as the amount of time spent in air (in a 24 h period), were significantly greater at 34 degrees C than at 12, 16, 22 or 28 degrees C. This reflected an increased use of the behavioral thermoregulation at temperatures approaching the critical thermal maximum of this species. Upon migrating from 34 degrees C water into 38 degrees C air, crayfish body temperature decreased significantly. These periods of emersion were interspersed with frequent dipping in the water, allowing the crayfish to gain the benefits of evaporative cooling, without the physiological costs incurred by long-term exposure to air.  相似文献

Determining how thermal variability will affect the structure, stability, and function of ecological communities is becoming increasingly important as global warming is predicted to affect not only average temperatures but also increase the frequency of long runs of high temperatures. Latitudinal differences in the responses of ecological communities to changes in their thermal regimes have also been predicted based on adaptations over evolutionary time to different thermal environments. We conducted an experiment to determine whether variability in temperature leads to consistent changes in community structure, temporal dynamics, and ecosystem functioning in laboratory analogues of natural freshwater supralittoral rock pool communities inhabited by meiofauna and zooplankton collected from sub‐Arctic, temperate, and tropical regions. Thermal variability of +4 °C around mean temperature led to increased extinction frequency, decreases in consumer abundance, increases in temporal variability of consumer abundance, and shifts from predominately negative interactions observed under constant temperature to positive interactions in the temperate and tropical communities but not in the sub‐Arctic communities. That sub‐Arctic zooplankton communities may be more robust to thermal variability than temperate or tropical communities’ supports recent studies on macrophysiological adaptations of species along latitudinal gradients and suggests that increasing thermal variability may have the greatest effects on community structure and function in tropical and temperate regions.  相似文献

How species respond to changes in environmental variability has been shown for single species, but the question remains whether these results are transferable to species when incorporated in ecological communities. Here, we address this issue by analysing the same species exposed to a range of environmental variabilities when (i) isolated or (ii) embedded in a food web. We find that all species in food webs exposed to temporally uncorrelated environments (white noise) show the same type of dynamics as isolated species, whereas species in food webs exposed to positively autocorrelated environments (red noise) can respond completely differently compared with isolated species. This is owing to species following their equilibrium densities in a positively autocorrelated environment that in turn enables species–species interactions to come into play. Our results give new insights into species'' response to environmental variation. They especially highlight the importance of considering both species'' interactions and environmental autocorrelation when studying population dynamics in a fluctuating environment.  相似文献

The extent to which phenotypic plasticity might mediate short-term responses to environmental change is controversial. Nonetheless, theoretical work has made the prediction that plasticity should be common, especially in predictably variable environments by comparison with those that are either stable or unpredictable. Here we examine these predictions by comparing the phenotypic plasticity of thermal tolerances (supercooling point (SCP), lower lethal temperature (LLT), upper lethal temperature (ULT)), following acclimation at either 0, 5, 10 or 15 degrees C, for seven days, of five, closely-related ameronothroid mite species. These species occupy marine and terrestrial habitats, which differ in their predictability, on sub-Antarctic Marion Island. All of the species showed some evidence of pre-freeze mortality (SCPs -9 to -23 degrees C; LLTs -3 to -15 degrees C), though methodological effects might have contributed to the difference between the SCPs and LLTs, and the species are therefore considered moderately chill tolerant. ULTs varied between 36 degrees C and 41 degrees C. Acclimation effects on SCP and LLT were typically stronger in the marine than in the terrestrial species, in keeping with the prediction of strong acclimation responses in species from predictably variable environments, but weaker responses in species from unpredictable environments. The converse was found for ULT. These findings demonstrate that acclimation responses vary among traits in the same species. Moreover, they suggest that there is merit in assessing the predictability of changes in high and low environmental temperatures separately.  相似文献
