The occurrence of eggs, pelagic larvae and juveniles, and settled juveniles of the dragonetRepomucenus valenciennei in Tokyo Bay, Japan, were investigated by plankton net and bottom trawl surveys between September 1990 and September 1991. Eggs, and pelagic larvae and juveniles appeared from April to November (spring to autumn), peaking in both spring and autumn. From the temporal pattern of egg and pelagic fish occurrence, and pelagic duration reported elsewhere (ca. one month), settlement could be predicted as occurring from late spring to autumn. However, settled juveniles appeared from August to December, with an abrupt peak in November. Aging from daily increments in the otoliths of settled recruits in 1990 indicated that the latter comprised individuals which had hatched between mid-September and early November (i.e. autumn cohort), implying that individuals which had hatched in spring to summer (April to August) were not recruited. Benthic hypoxia occurs widely in Tokyo Bay, from June to October each year, particularly in the northern part, which is the main nursery area ofR. valenciennei. The timing of dissolved oxygen recovery, and appearance of settled fish coincided closely (i.e. November), indicating that summer hypoxic conditions prevented the settlement of the spring cohort and hence recruitment to the population.  相似文献

Microhabitat use by marsh-edge fishes in a Louisiana estuary   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Synopsis We used a drop sampler to characterize use of the marsh-edge ecotone by small fishes along two transects running inland from the Gulf of Mexico for ca. 25 km in Louisiana's Barataria-Caminada Bay System. Monthly sampling was stratified among upper, middle, and lower reaches and within reaches to characterize fish responses to salinity, depth, distance from shore, substrate, dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, turbidity, velocity, and emergent stem density. In 681 quantitative samples, covering 658 m2, collected between October 1987 and October 1989, we collected 57 fish species and 16 864 individuals, primarily larvae and juveniles. The 15 most abundant fishes, comprising 97.7% of all individuals, were concentrated near the marsh edge (i.e., 0 to 1.25 m distance). Some significant differences within species for seasonal variables (e.g., temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration) reflected the ephemeral duration of early life history stages. Other differences reflected ontogenetic microhabitat shifts (e.g., depth and distance from shore). Within ecological groups, characterized as demersal residents, nektonic transients, and demersal transients, spatial and temporal segregation reflected the particular habitat requirements of each species. In a principal component analysis of microhabitat use, the first three components were interpreted as seasonal, depth-and-distance, and salinity axes, respectively. The array of species and size classes in principal component space reflected the complex dimensionality of microhabitat use. The high density of fish larvae and juveniles near the marsh edge confirmed the importance of the marsh-edge ecotone as a nursery for many estuarine-dependent fishes.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles of six species of Luciogobius were collected at Aritsu Beach on Okinawa Island using a small seine. Postflexion larvae were dominant during sampling and were collected when they approached the shoreline adjacent to or at the entrances to their adult habitats prior to settlement. Standard lengths of postflexion larvae ranged from 5.4 to 14.4 mm and varied depending on the species. The larvae occurred mainly from January to April, but some larvae were caught in October and November. Their pelagic larval durations were estimated to range from 17 to 36 days and varied depending on the species. Morphologies of field-caught larvae and juveniles and laboratory-reared juveniles were described. Six species were clearly distinguished based on fin ray and vertebral counts, proportions, body size, and pigment patterns. Although their taxonomic statuses could not be determined, it is thought that they have independent relatives in other regions.  相似文献

Summary This paper concerns the preferred environmental conditions for settlement and metamorphosis of larvae of the erect, rigidly calcified cheilostome bryozoanSchizotheca serratimargo and compares the settlement preferences with in situ distribution of adult colonies. A review of bryozoan larval behaviour and responses to environmental parameters is given in order better to understand larval settlement and metamorphosis in this species. Release of larvae ofS. serratimargo (Hincks) was induced so that each travelled down a path with a limited set of microenvironments in which it could choose to settle. Four different flow velocities, three different depths below the water surface, two different light intensities, three different orientations of plexiglas surfaces, and subdivision of distance of travel into three segments, yielded 216 microenvironments. 466 larvae successfully settled and metamorphosed within the experimental chamber. They metamorphosed in significantly higher numbers in microenvironments with low flow velocity, in the shallowest of the three possible depths, in darker areas, and on nonoverhanging surfaces with little or no sediment. The most important stimulus for settlement was darkness, especially where there was a strong gradient in light intensity.S. serratimargo grows as erect bilaminate bushes on protected flanks of boulders, in small caves, and just within the entrances of larger caves at depths of 5–30 m, as well as on hard debris on open muddy sand floors at 30–35 m depth in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. The experimentally-determined settlement patterns suggest that recruitment is more important than post-settlement interactions or exposure to physical damage in determining local distribution of the species.  相似文献

Summary Diet composition based on gut analyses was studied in larvae and juveniles belonging to six (out of eight) age groups (cohorts) of three species of cyprinids (Rutilus rutilus L., Leuciscus cephalus L., Scardinius erythrophthalmus L.) from a small meso-oligotrophic lake in Tyrol, Austria.A basic pattern of ontogenetic shifts of resource use is postulated for the first weeks after hatching, consisting of the sequence: phytoplankton-rotifers-crustaceans-chironomid larvae. However, there are several variations to this general theme.Diet overlap is of about the same magnitude between representatives of different species or different cohorts, and between members of schools belonging to one cohort. This points to the importance of random food selection in all larvae and juveniles during this phase of life.Prey size is a very poor predictor of food choice by young cyprinids, but there is greater similarity in diet between the larger juveniles than between the smaller larvae, irrespective of whether the fish compared represent different species, different cohorts or are members of homogeneous groups. The lack of correlation between prey size and predator size may be explained by assuming that out of a limited range of available prey size the fish always try to include in their diet also the largest items they are able to swallow. This would be a good strategy considering that growth rates are positively correlated with food size. One clearcut interspecific difference in resource use may be noted: The larvae of L. cephalus are distinguished from those of the other two species by the absence of rotifers and nauplii in their diet, and by their greater ability to handle both adult copepods and chironomid larvae.  相似文献

To understand the differences in the spawning sites among Cyprininae fishes in Lake Biwa, we conducted periodic sampling of larvae and juveniles at three sites (irrigation ditch, St. 1; river, St. 2; and satellite lake, St. 3). On the basis of species/subspecies identification by using RAPD analysis, we examined the species composition of the larvae and juveniles at these three sampling sites. The number of specimens was 616, 68, and 117 at St. 1, St. 2, and St. 3, respectively. Based on morphological and genetic identification, the specimens were found to include nine fish species/subspecies, namely, Carassius auratus grandoculis, Carassius cuvieri, Carassius auratus langsdorfii, Cyprinus carpio, Sarcocheilichthys sp., Silurus asotus, Oryzias latipes, Odontobutis obscura obscura, and Rhinogobius sp. The species composition at the three sites also differed. Among the Cyprininae fishes, C. auratus grandoculis, C. auratus langsdorfii, and Cyprinus carpio were found in abundance at St. 1; C. cuvieri was not collected from St. 1 but was found at the other two sites, particularly St. 3. Among the other fishes, Rhinogobius sp. was collected at St. 1 and St. 3, whereas the other four occurred only at St. 1. These results suggest that the selection of spawning sites by C. cuvieri differs to a certain extent from that of the other Cyprininae fishes, and the irrigation ditch in the lake is an important habitat for the larvae and juveniles of native fish species.  相似文献

Larval and juvenile development of two blenniids,Omobranchus fasciolatocepts andO. punctatus, is described using eggs collected from natural waters in Tokyo Bay and incubated in an aquarium. These larvae and juveniles are compared with those of two otherOmobranchus species,O. elegans andO. loxozonus, distributed widely in Japan.Onobranchus punctatus is characterized by a unique, pointed snout in preflexion larvae, no melanophores proximally on the lower part of the pectoral fins in flexion and postflexion larvae, and pterygiophores projecting externally as blades between the dorsal and anal fin-rays in postflexion larvae and juveniles.Omobranchus fasciolatoceps has the following characteristics: a few melanophores on the fore-and mid-brain, but none on the hind-brain in preflexion larvae; no melanophores on the cleithral symphysis in flexion and postflexion larvae; no external pterygiophore blades in postflexion larvae and juveniles; and a unique dorsal skin flap on the head in juveniles. Ontogenetic developement of dorsal and anal pterygiophores is described forO. fasciolatoceps andO. punctatus. InO. punctatus, the postero-distal part of each proximal radial projects remarkably to form the external blades between the soft fin-rays, whereas the external blades between the fin spines are formed by fusion of a dermal bone developed from the antero-distal part of each proximal radial with the adjacent distal radial.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to culture sponge juveniles from larvae. Starting from larvae we expected to enhance the survival and growth, and to decrease the variation in these parameters during the sponge cultures. First, settlement success, morphological changes during metamorphosis, and survival of Dysidea avara, Ircinia oros, Hippospongia communis, under the same culture conditions, were compared. In a second step, we tested the effects of flow and food on survival and growth of juveniles from Dysidea avara and Crambe crambe. Finally, in a third experiment, we monitored survival and growth of juveniles of D. avara and C. crambe transplanted to the sea to compare laboratory and field results. The results altogether indicated that sponge culture from larvae is a promising method for sponge supply and that laboratory culture under controlled conditions is preferred over sea cultures in order to prevent biomass losses during these early life stages.  相似文献

Microstructural growth in the sagittae ofSeastes schlegeli, a viviparous scorpaenid, is described from prenatal larval to early juvenile stages, and related to morphological changes. Embryos and prenatal larvae were extruded from a gravid female from 21 d prior to birth onwards, and released larvae reared and sampled up to 58 d after birth. Eggs hatched in the ovary 14 d prior to birth. At this time, otoliths consisted of a core surrounded by a prominent check, similar to the otolith structure seen in oviparous fishes. Fourteen growth increments had been deposited by birth. The parturition mark it-self comprised a prominent check and narrow growth increment Growth increments were deposited daily from hatching up to 58 d after birth, whereas accessory primordia first appeared in otoliths by ca. 32 d after birth, at a specimen total length of ca. 13 mm. This corresponded to the period during which the larvae metamorphosed into juveniles. Otoliths grew exponentially during the larval stage and linearly during the juvenile stage. when plotted against total length. Growth in total length from hatching to 58 d after birth could be represented by the Gompertz curve.  相似文献

Postnatal development of six species of sessile rotifers in the families Flosculariidae (Floscularia decora, Lacinularia flosculosa, Limnias ceratophylli, Ptygura crystallina) and Collothecidae (Collotheca ornata, Stephanoceros fimbriatus) was investigated by observing free-swimming and newly settled larvae until they metamorphosed into adults. Three variants of metamorphosis were observed. A hypothetical explanation of changes of the coronal construction of orders Gnesiotrocha and Pseudotrocha is considered.  相似文献

Larval and juvenile stages of kurosoi,Sebastes schlegeli, are described and illustrated from wild specimens. Some ecological aspects of larvae and juveniles are also described. Notochord flexion occurred between 5.6–7.5 mm SL. Transformation occurred between 13–20 mm SL. Preflexion and flexion larvae ofS. schlegeli can be distinguished from similar larvae by the pigmentation of the dorsal and ventral midlines of the tail and absence of pigmentation on the ventral portion of the rectum. After notochord flexion, the dorsal and lateral regions in both larvae and pelagic juveniles were heavily pigmented, suggesting adaptation for neustonic life style. Larvae and juveniles were caught at many coastal stations, but did not occur in cooler offshore waters. Larvae smaller than 20 mm SL inhabited surface waters. Until ca. 40 mm SL, juveniles inhabited mainly surface waters (without drifting seaweed), but also used other habitats, such as the drifting seaweed, and near the sea bed. Small larvae (<7 mm SL) fed mainly on copepod nauplii. Larger larvae fed on calanoid copepodites andEvadne nordmanni. Pelagic juveniles fed mainly on fish eggs, with fish larvae also being important food items for some individuals. Most food items taken by juveniles that were associated with drifting seaweed were eggs with attaching filaments (Cololabis saira andHyporhamphus sajori), suggesting that the high density of such food items both attracts and keeps juveniles around drifting seaweed.  相似文献

Settlement and metamorphosis of pediveliger larvae of Mytilus coruscus in response to natural biofilms was investigated in the laboratory. Pediveliger larvae settled and metamorphosed in response to biofilms and post-larval settlement and metamorphosis increased with biofilm age. The activity of the biofilm was positively correlated with biofilm age, dry weight, bacterial density and diatom density, but had no apparent relationship with chlorophyll a concentration. The change in bacterial community composition corresponding to biofilm age may explain differences in the age-dependent inducing activities of biofilms, which in turn may play an important role in larval settlement in this species.  相似文献

Meristic counts of early and late wild settled juveniles of Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (Paralichthyidae), in Wakasa Bay, Japan, were compared, with specimens collected from 26 sites spread along ca. 1700km of coastline facing the Japan Sea. Mean dorsal and anal ray counts of the early settled group at Kyoto were significantly larger than those of the late settled group. A discontinuous geographic boundary in mean dorsal and anal ray counts was found around Wakasa Bay and the Noto Peninsula with both means significantly larger in the southern group than in the northern group. Mean ray counts of the early and late settlers at Kyoto were similar to those of the southern and northern groups, respectively. The effect of water temperature on meristic characters was tested on two groups of laboratory-reared juveniles. Mean dorsal and anal ray counts were larger in juveniles reared at higher water temperatures. The early and late settler groups were estimated to hatch in late February and late April, respectively, representing negative response of meristic characters to water temperatures if these two groups hatched out in Wakasa Bay. Differences in the dorsal and anal ray counts between the early and late settled groups at Kyoto can, therefore be attributed to genotypic, not phenotypic variation. This suggests the possibility of transport of larvae of the early group from areas further south to Wakasa Bay by the warm Tsushima Current, a branch of the Kuroshio, which flows northeastward along the coast of the Japan Sea, particularly when the temperature gradation between the south and north areas during these seasons is considered.  相似文献

Many life-history and developmental studies of marine invertebrates assume that eggs of species with nonfeeding larvae are large because they provide materials for rapid development. Using the sea urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma which has 400 μm eggs and nonfeeding larvae, we removed an acellular, lipid-rich component from the blastula equivalent to ca. 40% of the egg volume and ca. 50% of the organic mass. Experimentally manipulated, reduced-lipid larvae survived well, developed in the usual time (3.5 d), and high percentages of the original numbers metamorphosed into anatomically normal juveniles. Control juveniles were larger at metamorphosis, grew more, and survived longer than siblings that lacked this lipid-rich material. Moderate increases in egg size in species with nonfeeding larvae may enhance postlarval performance significantly and therefore may reflect selection on early juvenile traits. The contrasts of our results and comparable experiments with feeding larvae suggests that egg size may play fundamentally different roles in species with feeding and nonfeeding larvae. The accommodation of materials reserved for the juvenile stage should be considered among hypotheses on evolutionary modification of developmental patterns.  相似文献

We investigated the size at maturation, breeding season, and morphological development of larvae and juveniles of a freshwater pipefish Microphis leiaspis, which belongs to Gastrophori, collected from three rivers on the northern part of Okinawa-jima Island, Japan. The minimum size of brooding males was 105–123 mm in standard length (SL). The smallest mature female was estimated to be ca. 130 mm SL from the analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological observations of gonads. The breeding season was estimated to be from June to December according to monthly changes in female GSI, histological observations of gonads, and monthly changes in the occurrence of brooding males. The number of eggs in the male brood pouch ranged from 75 to 241 (mean ± SD: 152 ± 52, n = 22). The male releases newly hatched larvae in freshwater areas. After newborns grow in the sea, they return to freshwater areas of the rivers and attain maturity. Microphis leiaspis was conformed to have an amphidromous life history. Notochord length of the released larvae was 6.1 mm, with a well-developed finfold. Larvae attained 11.1 mm SL, formation of the caudal and dorsal fin rays was complete, and the caudal fin became lozenge shaped at 30 days after the release, and juveniles reached 36.0 mm SL at 63 days after release. In the period between 30 and 63 days after the release, formation of all fins except the pectoral fins was completed, and caudal fin rays were extended and sector shaped with deep slits between each fin ray. The morphology of the released larvae of M. leiaspis is similar to that of Gastrophori species, and the morphology of juveniles similar to other species of Microphis.  相似文献

The larval and juvenile stages of kitsune-mebaru,Sebastes vulpes, based on 50 wild specimens collected in, the Sea of Japan, are described and illustrated, and some ecological aspects of the early life history (feeding, horizonal distribution and habitat shift) included. Preflexion larvae became extruded between 3.9–4.6 mm body length (BL) and notochord flexion occurred between 4.7–7.1 mm BL. Transformation from postflexion larvae to pelagic juventiles occurred between 13–17 mm BL. Compared with other rockfish species,S. vulpes is deep-bodied, throughout both larval and, juvenile stages. Larval and juvenileS. vulpes inhabit mainly coastal water surface layer (usually on the continental shelf), but do not occur offshore region (northwest of Oki Islands). Although someS. vulpes juveniles are associated with drifting seaweed, such clumps are not indispensable habitats for any stages. Surface-to-benthie migration of juveniles occurs at about 25 mm BL. Preflexion and flexion larvae feed mainly on copepod nauplii, and postflexion, transforming larvae and pelagic juveniles mainly on calanoid copepodites (Parracalanus parvus).  相似文献

The behavioural response of infective juveniles (IJs) of Heterorhabditis megidis (strain NLH-E87.3) to cues from roots of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), thuja (Thuja occidentalis L.) and to larvae of the black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus, was studied. Choice assays were conducted in an Y-tube olfactometer filled with moist sand. Infective juveniles were activated by the presence of intact roots of both strawberry and thuja plants. Some nematodes aggregated in the compartments with roots but most moved away from the roots to the opposite side. Given a choice, IJs showed a preference for strawberry roots above O. sulcatus larvae. No difference in preference was observed between thuja roots and O. sulcatus larvae. The combination of strawberry roots with vine weevil larvae was preferred above roots alone. In the assays with thuja roots and larvae versus thuja roots alone, however, IJs were stimulated to move but showed preference for the opposite compartment away from the arms with roots and larvae. Nematodes responded differently to mechanically damaged roots as opposed to roots damaged by vine weevil larvae. In assays with damaged thuja roots, IJs were most attracted by the roots damaged by larvae, whereas in the strawberry assays IJs showed a clear preference for the mechanically damaged roots. When challenged with a choice between strawberry and thuja roots, IJs moved preferentially to strawberry than to thuja roots. A preference for the combination of strawberry roots plus larvae over the thuja roots plus larvae was also observed.  相似文献

The osteological development of the synanceiidInimicus japonicus, was described on the basis of five larvae and four juveniles (4.2–10.1 mm BL) reared in the laboratory, and two wild adult specimens. All bones, except for the basisphenoid, were formed in all larvae and juveniles, but fusions between the uppermost actinost and scapula, upper caudal plate and urostyle, and third preural centrum and hemal spine were not completed by 10.1 mm BL. Following comparison with the adult condition, a rod-like ossified bone without a tooth plate on the upper branchial arch of larvae and juveniles was considered homologous with the second pharyngobranchial. The number of epurals and length of the neural spine on the second preural centrum varied (unrelated to growth) and it is inferred thatJ. japonicus shows intraspecific variations in these bones.  相似文献

Deepwater sculpin, Myoxocephalus thompsoni (Girard), were sampled from six stations from the 15–100 m depth contours in Lake Michigan between April 1983 and July 1984. In south-eastern Lake Michigan M. thompsoni lay benthic eggs in offshore waters, which hatch between November and August, with peak hatching in March. Abundance of larvae in pelagic samples was higher offshore than inshore, but larval size was greater and development more advanced at inshore stations, indicating an inshore movement after hatching. Larvae reached metamorphosis at 20 mm and settled to the bottom beginning in July. Pelagic larvae 20–40 mm were found in the lower water column at all stations, but newly settled individuals were only captured with bottom trawls at inshore locations (≤60 m depth). Data from ichthyoplankton and bottom trawl samples in 1983 and 1984 indicated that locations for successful settlement of larvae to the bottom extended only as deep as the shallowest fringe of the adult population (> 50 m in 1983). In 1983, maximum density of larvae reached 0.4 individuals m−3 by June. Survival from the pelagic larval stage to the demersal young-of-year stage in 1983/1984 was c . 0.1–0.4%. The specific mechanism of mortality at the time of transition to a demersal habit has not been determined.  相似文献
