Ovarian development was studied in cultured female Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis. Females with regressed ovaries, mainly occupied by perinucleolar oocytes, predominated throughout summer exhibiting low condition factor (K), gonadosomatic index (I(G)), and plasma 17beta-estradiol and testosterone levels. Throughout autumn and winter (ovaries at early and intermediate maturation), oocytes progressed to cortical alveoli and vitellogenic stages accompanied by increasing K, I(G), and plasma 17beta-estradiol and testosterone levels. At late winter/early spring, ovarian development reached its maximum with the predominance of females at intermediate and final maturation (the latter occupied by late vitellogenic oocytes and few early maturation oocytes) and peak values of K, I(G), and 17beta-estradiol and testosterone concentrations. Steroid levels were lower (especially testosterone) than those for naturally-spawning females, which might cause extensive atresia without final oocyte maturation (no spawning was observed). This degenerative process reduced de size of the ovary (initial and intermediate phases of regression) in association with declining K, I(G), and plasma 17beta-estradiol and testosterone levels and increasing proportions of perinucleolar oocytes. The circulating 17,20beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one levels, the proposed maturation-inducing steroid, remained relatively constant throughout the experimental period, suggesting that oocytes were unable to respond adequately to its stimulation. We propose the inadequate seasonal thermal regime as the main cause of such dysfunction.  相似文献

In this paper we attempted to investigate the existence of daily fluctuations on plasma sexual steroids (17beta-estradiol, E(2) and testosterone, T) in Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis) females. We described the monthly day/night concentrations and seasonal daily rhythms in animals reared under natural photo- and thermo-period. In addition, the influence of the natural annual fluctuation of the water temperature on the plasma concentration of these steroids was investigated, using one group of Senegal sole under a natural photoperiod, but with an attenuated thermal cycle (around 17-20 degrees C) for one year. Although no significant day/night differences were detected in monthly samplings, the existence of an annual rhythm of E(2) and T (p<0.01) with an acrophase in February was revealed by COSINOR analysis. Maximum values were reached in March for both steroids (6.1+/-1.7 ng mL(-1) at mid-dark, MD and 4.0+/-0.6 ng mL(-1) at mid-light, ML for E2 and 1.4+/-0.4 ng mL(-1) at MD and 0.8+/-0.1 ng mL(-1) at ML for T) in anticipation of the spawning season (May-June). As regards seasonal daily rhythms, the presence of daily oscillations was revealed. At the spring solstice (21st March) a daily rhythm was observed for both steroids (COSINOR, p<0.01), with an acrophase at 20:00 h (E(2)) and at 21:08 h (T). In summer, autumn and winter no daily rhythms were observed due to the low steroid levels at those seasons. When Senegal sole females were submitted to an attenuated annual thermal cycle, the steroid rhythm disappeared (there was no surge in spring, as in the control group) and these fish did not spawn, despite being subjected to natural photoperiod conditions. This result underlined the importance of the natural annual fluctuation of water temperature and photoperiod on the synchronization of the spawning season and on the onset of steroidogenesis.  相似文献

Female fish were kept under 16L:8D/20 degrees C in November and April and the onset of light and/or feeding times were shifted by several hours in the experimental groups. Photoperiod and feeding entrained significant fluctuations in serum gonadotropin hormone (GTH) levels when the onset of light and the first daily feeding were 4 hr apart, but not when they were 10 hr apart. Fish were subjected to 16L:8D for 14-16 days in February, and to either a constant warm (20 degrees C) or a diurnal sinusoidal (12-20 degrees C) temperature regime, the warmth being imposed during photophase or scotophase. While relatively high, uniform serum GTH levels were found throughout the 24-hr period in fish subjected to constant warmth, warm temperature during the day promoted fluctuations in serum GTH levels, and warmth during night resulted in relatively low, uniform serum GTH levels.  相似文献

Photoperiod and temperature are known as the main synchronizers of seasonal reproduction in fish. This paper studied the role of photoperiod on the synchronization of F1 Senegal sole reproduction rhythms. Fish were maintained under constant short-photoperiod (9L:15D) from the winter solstice onwards (experimental group) or under naturally-changing photoperiod (control group), and water temperature naturally oscillated in both groups. Blood samples were collected during the reproduction season at pre-spawning (March), spawning (April) and post-spawning (May) to determine the endocrine status. Spawning events and egg quality parameters were also monitored. The results revealed a significant increase in nocturnal melatonin concentration from March to May in the control group, while in the experimental group such seasonal change did not occur. As to plasma levels of vitellogenin, testosterone, estradiol and 11keto-testosterone, differences between groups were found mostly in March, while in April and May levels were often similar. Spawning was observed in both groups, although the experimental group started slightly earlier and also finished earlier than the control group, perhaps as a result of the increase in sex steroids and VTG observed at pre-spawning. Briefly, reproduction rhythms persisted in the absence of the natural lengthening of photoperiod, although photoperiod manipulation altered the seasonal modulation of melatonin, increased sex steroids and vitellogenin at pre-spawning, and slightly advanced the timing of spawning.  相似文献

Synopsis The Senegal sole Solea senegalensis is a commercially valuable fish and it is beginning to be cultured, in an extensive way, in fish farms in southern European countries. Little is known about its feeding habits, unlike other Solea species such as the common sole Solea solea. This paper studies the feeding habits of a wild population of Senegal sole. Differences according to sex, age and season were statistically analyzed. A total of 376 fish, aged between two and six years old, were studied over a single year. Twenty eight different families of prey were identified, belonging, in order of abundance, to crustaceans, polychaetes and molluscs. The Senegal sole trophic profile (preys items with a Simpson's dominance index 2) was: Glyceridae, Nephtydidae, Onuphidae, Apseudidae, Ampeliscidae and Upogebiidae. Feeding habits of Senegal sole were significantly influenced by sex, age and season, with crustaceans being the prey most affected. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Daniel Ray Ogilvie. who died 7 January 1995.  相似文献

Habitat specific growth rates and condition indices were estimated for Solea solea and Solea senegalensis, in two nursery areas within the Tagus estuary, at the end of the estuarine colonization process, in 2005. While in the uppermost nursery area the two species of sole live in sympatry, in the lower nursery only S. senegalensis is present. Daily increments of left lapillar otoliths were used to estimate age (in days) and determine growth rates (mm per day). Condition indices were assessed through RNA‐DNA ratio in muscle samples. Growth rates were higher for S. senegalensis (0.970and 1.180 mm per day in nursery A and B, respectively) than for S. solea (0.767 mm per day in nursery A). Growth rates of S. senegalensis from the uppermost nursery area were lower when compared to those obtained for the other nursery. The RNA/DNA condition index followed the general trend given by the growth rate estimates, i.e. values were higher for S. senegalensis than for S. solea. However, no significant differences were detected in S. senegalensis from the two nurseries. Larger variations in salinity (10‰ amplitude in the uppermost nursery vs 0.2‰ in the lower nursery) and highest pollution loads may be important factors lowering the habitat quality of the uppermost nursery in comparison to the lower nursery. The use of growth rate estimates based on otolith readings and the RNA/DNA index as tools for habitat quality assessment was discussed.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of sexual selection in the geologic past is poorly documented based on quantification, largely because of difficulty in sexing fossil specimens. Even such essential ecological parameters as adult sex ratio (ASR) and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) are rarely quantified, despite their implications for sexual selection. To enable their estimation, we propose a method for unbiased sex identification based on sexual shape dimorphism, using size-independent principal components of phenotypic data. We applied the method to test sexual selection in Keichousaurus hui, a Middle Triassic (about 237 Ma) sauropterygian with an unusually large sample size for a fossil reptile. Keichousaurus hui exhibited SSD biased towards males, as in the majority of extant reptiles, to a minor degree (sexual dimorphism index −0.087). The ASR is about 60% females, suggesting higher mortality of males over females. Both values support sexual selection of males in this species. The method may be applied to other fossil species. We also used the Gompertz allometric equation to study the sexual shape dimorphism of K. hui and found that two sexes had largely homogeneous phenotypes at birth except in the humeral width, contrary to previous suggestions derived from the standard allometric equation.  相似文献

Electrophoretic data from different populations of the teleosts Solea senegalensis, S. aegyptiaca and S. vulgaris were analysed using multivariate analysis. This confirmed that Solea vulgaris is very different genetically and isolated from both senegalensis and aegyptiaca , and that the latter two forms are also well differentiated. The presence of senegalensis alleles in the aegyptiaca population of the Golfe-du-Lion, and reciprocally, aegyptiaca alleles in the senegalensis population of the Gulf of Tunis, suggests that genetic exchange occurs between them. The association of these alleles (gametic disequilibria) and the existence of hybrid individuals show that these exchanges are an actual process rather than a consequence of 'fossil' gene flow. Furthermore, the genetic introgression seems to be asymmetrical in the two regions studied where they come into contact.  相似文献

The measurement of enzymatic activities involved in xenobiotic biotransformation was carried out in adults of Solea solea and Solea senegalensis. The hepatic enzymes analysed were cytochrome P450 (CYP) related activities using eight fluorometric substrates and carboxylesterases (CbE). The conjugating activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST) and UPD-glucuronosyltransferase (UDPGT) were also assessed. Specific mammalian inhibitors were used as diagnostic tools for related activities of CYP1A (α-naphthoflavone; αNF), CYP2B6 and CYP2C19 (ticlopidine) and CYP3A4 (ketoconazole). The in vitro sensitivity to organophosphorous pesticides (OP) was tested in the S10 homogenate of brain (acetylcholinesterase-AChE) and liver (CbE). Furthermore, the pesticide chlorpyrifos oxon (CLPO) was used to explore the OP sensitivity of CbE of both species in two subcellular fractions (microsomes and cytosol), using two substrates. Overall, only two parameters confirmed species differences: EROD and cytosolic CbE being significantly elevated (p < 0.05) in the common sole, S. solea. A high inhibition of CYP1A related activities using several fluorometric substrates (ER, MR and CEC) after in vitro incubation with αNF confirmed all measure CYP1A1-related activities whereas ketoconazole was more specific for BFCOD (CYP3A4). Pesticide sensitivity was similar for brain AChE but hepatic CbE had a protective role that was species and pesticide dependent.  相似文献

The experiments described here were designed to determine whether males' capacity to accelerate female pubertal development is reflected in females' urinary steroid levels in mice, and whether steroids in males' urine are influenced by exposure to developing females. In the first experiment, measures from urine collected daily from female mice aged 31-59 days showed a gradual rise in 17beta-estradiol levels and a distinct linear rise in progesterone levels. In a second experiment, daily steroids were measured in females aged 30-42 days while they were either housed alone or underneath two novel outbred males. Females exposed to males showed accelerated development at day 43 in uterine weight, and to a lesser extent in ovarian and whole-body weights. Average steroid levels did not significantly differ between conditions, but intra-individual variance in estradiol measures was greater in male-exposed than in isolated females. Creatinine levels were higher in isolated females. Males exposed to developing females excreted higher levels of estradiol in their urine compared to isolated males. These data suggest that excreted steroids can reflect general pubertal development, but may not fully reflect substantial morphological impacts of exposure to novel males. Elevations of estrogen levels in males exposed to developing females could help to account for precocious puberty in such females.  相似文献

In vertebrates, stress and thyroid systems interact closely, most likely because of the involvement of both systems in energy metabolism. However, studies on these interactions, especially during larval development, are scarce. Recently, cDNAs coding for corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and CRH-binding protein (CRH-BP), two key players in the regulation of the neuroendocrine stress response, were characterized for the flatfish Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). To investigate the involvement of stress and thyroid systems in this species, the effects of food deprivation during early development of S. senegalensis were assessed. Growth was arrested in food-deprived post-larvae, which was also reflected by decreased carbon and nitrogen contents, indicating increased catabolism. Food deprivation induces chronic stress, as illustrated by enhanced whole-body cortisol levels, as well as an up regulation of crh and a decrease of crh-bp expression levels. Furthermore, whole-body total T3 concentrations of food-deprived post-larvae were reduced, although tshβ subunit expression levels remained unaffected. Our results show that food deprivation is a chronic stressor that induces energy-releasing catabolic processes that compensate for the reduced energy intake, and inhibits anabolic processes via the peripheral thyroid system.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal pattern of estuarine use by both Solea solea and Solea senegalensis was investigated between April 1995 and November 1996 by beam trawl surveys. Spatial and seasonal distribution and abundance were different for each species. The highest densities of S. solea were recorded in deeper, warmer, low salinity areas and where the sediment consisted of a high proportion of fine sand and presented a high abundance of amphipods. The 0-group individuals of this species first occurred on the nursery ground in April. Numbers peaked in June and July, and from October to April abundance was low. S. senegalensis had a wider distribution and its abundance was related to food availability. The 0-group individuals of this species occurred in the nursery areas later than S. solea, from June to August.  相似文献

An histological and histochemical study was conducted on the stomach of adult Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis specimens. The stomach was made up of four distinct layers: mucosa, lamina propria-submucosa-, muscularis and serosa. Surface epithelial, glandular and rodlet cells were present in the mucosa. Cells of the columnar epithelium contained a basal nucleus. Numerous mitochondria, granular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus consisting of several parallel cisternae and vesicles were observed in the cytoplasm of these cells. The lysosomes were small, round and dense. The gastric glands were numerous in the pyloric and fundic regions but absent in the cardiac stomach. These glands were formed by two cell-types: light and dark cells. The light cells were characterised by numerous mitochondria, while dark cells had slightly fewer mitochondria and a tubulo-vesicular system. Rodlet cells similar to those observed in other teleostean fish were present among the epithelial cells. Although the epithelial cells of the mucosa contained a weak presence of neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides/mucosubstances, these substances were abundant in the lamina propria-submucosa. Proteins rich in arginine, lysine, cysteine and cystine were rarely present in the mucosa and lamina propria-submucosa of stomach, while proteins rich in tyrosine were abundant in these layers. Acid phosphatase, and ATP-ase (pH 7.2 and 9.4) activities were detected in the mucosa and lamina propria-submucosa. Alkaline phosphatase activity was not detected.  相似文献

The osmoregulatory response of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis, Kaup 1858) to 14-day exposure and throughout 17-day exposure to different environmental salinities was investigated. A linear relationship was observed between environmental salinity and gill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity whereas kidney Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity was unaffected. Two osmoregulatory periods could be distinguished according to variations in plasma osmolality: an adjustment period and a chronic regulatory period. No major changes in plasma osmolality and ions levels were registered at the end of the 14- to 17-day exposure period, indicating an efficient adaptation of the osmoregulatory system. Plasma levels of glucose and lactate were elevated in hypersaline water, indicating the importance of these energy substrates in these environments. Glucose was increased during hyper-osmoregulation but only in the adjustment period. Cortisol proved to be a good indicator of chronic stress and stress induced by transfer to the different osmotic conditions. This work shows that S. senegalensis is able to acclimate to different osmotic conditions during short-term exposure.  相似文献

Contrary to larval essential fatty acid (EFA) requirements, the effect of dietary neutral lipid supply has been little investigated in marine fish larvae. The present work investigates the effect of feeding Senegalese sole larvae on Artemia enriched with higher or lower doses of lipid emulsion. Two lipid sources - soybean oil and fish oil - were compared. From 16 days after hatching (DAH) onwards, larvae were fed one of four experimental treatments: Artemia enriched on a high or low dose of soybean oil emulsion (HS and LS) or Artemia enriched on a high or low dose of fish oil emulsion (HF and LF). In terms of growth, the dietary lipid level did not have a significant effect while the soybean oil treatments induced a lower growth than the fish oil-enriched Artemia. The fatty acid (FA) composition of the larvae closely reflected the dietary quantitative and qualitative FA profile. Only slight dietary effects were noted in the activity of trypsin, lipase and alkaline phosphatase. A higher amount of lipid droplets was noticeable in the posterior intestine epithelia and in the hepatocytes of larvae fed Artemia enriched with higher lipid doses, while LS-Artemia induced the lower lipid accumulation on the basal zone of the enterocytes, in accordance with the lowest total lipid level measured in this treatment. These results suggest an important effect of dietary total lipid level on lipid accumulation in the enterocytes and on FA absorption. At 33 DAH a tube feeding trial was conducted with 14C-labelled oleic acid (OA) or triolein (TRI), showing that the lower accumulation of lipid droplets in the larvae fed LS was associated with a significantly higher absorption and retention in the gut and body tissues of the TRI label. For OA no significant differences between treatments were found. TRI label was considerably more evacuated than OA, indicating that sole larvae may have a lower capacity to incorporate a triacylglycerol, which needs to be digested. Finally, OA appears to be preferentially utilized for energy production, accumulating more in larval tissues when absorbed in higher amounts.  相似文献

Faecal sexual steroids have been used in field studies evaluating the relationships between gender and the multiple factors influencing endocrine status of individuals. The determination of faecal steroids has been also proposed as an alternative, non-invasive sexing method when other methods were deemed impractical or risky for the health of birds. In this study, we quantified sexual steroid hormones in faeces of the great bustard (Otis tarda), a large and sexually dimorphic polyginic bird species that it is threatened and subjected to intense wildlife management. We evaluated differences between captivity and wild conditions, flocks and sexes, and used faecal steroids to develop sex determination procedures. We found similar steroid levels in captive and wild bustards, no differences between unisexual wild flocks and clear between-sexes differences in testosterone but not estradiol. Faecal steroids accurately discriminated gender in both captive and wild known-sex great bustards. Total testosterone concentration was always higher than estradiol concentration in faecal samples from males, but estradiol was not always higher than testosterone in females. Faecal steroids failed to reveal the presence of young males in female flocks during winter, despite faecal testosterone levels increased with age in a small sample of captive males. Our results show that faecal steroid measurement for both sexing and characterizing the endocrine status of great bustards is feasible, and therefore it should be valuable in wildlife management, especially in combination with additional information obtained from faeces as diet.  相似文献

The distribution of galanin-like immunoreactive structures was studied in the brain of the Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, using immunohistochemical methods. Periventricular immunoreactive cell bodies were observed in the rostral pole of the preoptic recess, within the pars parvocellularis of the nucleus preopticus parvocellularis. Another galanin-immunoreactive cell population was observed more caudal in the ventromedial hypothalamus, along the medial evaginations of the lateral recess. These cells appear within the cytoarchitectonic limits of the nucleus recessus lateralis pars ventralis. We found an extensive presence of galanin-immunoreactive fibres throughout the entire brain, although the most massive network of fibres was observed in the caudal olfactory bulbs, ventral telencephalon, preoptic area and around diencephalic ventricular recesses. Also, the hypophysis, ventricular mesencephalic area, median reticular formation and viscerosensory rhombencephalon displayed important plexuses of galanin-immunoreactive axons. The widespread distribution of these immunoreactive structures in the brain and pituitary of the Senegalese sole suggests an important role for galanin in neuroendocrine regulation of brain and adenohypophyseal functions.  相似文献

The Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis has been exploited extensively in aquaculture from different countries; at present an intensive production of larvae and adults is being achieved with some nutritional problems. Since this species displays very different life styles and feeding habits at different stages of its life history (larvae, metamorphosis, adults), and because digestive mucins are implicated in different physiological processes including: increase of digestive efficiency, promotion of macromolecules-absorption, buffering of intestinal fluid, prevention of proteolytic damage to the epithelium and defence against bacteria, etc., we studied the histomorphological aspects, as well as the histochemical distribution of carbohydrates, (PAS, Alcian Blue), proteins (Bromophenol Blue), lipids (Oil Red O, Black Sudan B) and glycoproteins (Horseradish peroxidase-conjugated lectins) in the intestinal epithelium of adult Solea senegalensis specimens. Our data are compared with those obtained in larvae and adults of this and other fish species. Primary and secondary folds, microvilli of the intestinal enterocytes, as well as mucous or goblet cells were observed with a scanning electron microscope. Enterocytes and mucocytes of the intestine of adult Solea senegalensis were characterized by a rich supply of sugar and oligosaccharides. Carbohydrates (glycogen and mucins), proteins and lipids were present in cytoplasm and microvilli--brush border--of the enterocytes, which contain GalNAc, GlcNAc, Man, Glc and sialic acid-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine glycoconjugates. Intestinal mucous cells were strongly or weakly stained with Alcian Blue (pH 2.5 and 1). PAS reactivity was intense in numerous goblet cells, but some cells were PAS unreactive or weakly stained. Some goblet cells were positive for Bromophenol Blue but numerous cells were unstained; thus many proteins and possibly lipids may be conjugated with sugars. A similar reactivity to WGA and to neuraminidase-WGA was identified in some intestinal goblet, which were Con A unreactive, indicating the absence of Man and/or Glc and NANA glycoconjugates. GalNAc residues were only scarcely present in glycoproteins of some goblet cells.  相似文献
