Stratigraphic analyses of the postglacial sediments of Little Round Lake and the recent sediments of two additional southern Ontario lakes were used to compare the relative abundance of fossil diatom frustules to chrysophycean statospores. Relatively few statospores were recorded during eutrophic phases in the lakes' histories such as during periods of anthropogenic activity in the lakes' catch me nt, when diatom frustules were abundant. The increased relative abundance of statospores during the early postglacial in Little Round Lake was attributed to both oligotrophy and a short growing season, conditions that currently exist in many high arctic lakes. From these data it is seen that the ratio of fossil diatom frustules to chrysophycean statospores may provide a useful paleolimnological index of trophic status in temperate lakes. The advantages of this index include its simplicity, the fact that frustules and statospores can be enumerated from the same microscope slides, and that the ratio is independent of sedimentation rates.  相似文献

Temporal patterns of phytoplankton biomass and community structure are described for two Kenyan lakes and subsequently compared with patterns reported in other tropical and temperate lakes. Lake Naivasha had a lower and more seasonally variable (10×) biomass, with a seasonal shift between diatoms and blue-greens, while the L. Oloidien biomass was less variable (3.7×) and dominated by blue-greens. Biomass and chlorophyll a were strongly correlated and in turn were coupled to the level of total phosphorus. A total of 143 and 94 taxa were described for L. Naivasha and L. Oloidien, respectively.The comparative analysis showed: a) a paucity of exclusively tropical species; b) that more than 30 percent of the species in two highly saline Kenyan lakes were also present in the two freshwater lakes; c) no evidence for a postulated decline of phytoplankton species abundance with latitude from the temperate zone to the tropics; d) that the low fraction of chrysophyte biomass in tropical lakes is a function of trophy rather than of latitude; e) that the fraction of chlorophyte biomass in tropical lakes is generally higher than in temperate lakes; f) that the proportion of nannoplankton in the two Kenyan freshwater lakes is not different from that in temperate lakes of the same trophy; g) that seasonal or annual biomass oscillations in the tropics are not systematically lower than in the temperate zone; h) evidence for large inter-year difference in the max.:min. biomass ratio in the only tropical lake (L. Naivasha) for which such data are available; i) that an average biomass ratio appears predictable for tropical lakes from the proportion of the sediment surface in contact with epilimnetic water. Palaeolimnological investigations in Poland based on Cladocera (Crustacea)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The results of subfossil Cladocera analysis obtained from deposits of 26 lakes throughout Poland have been presented. For years throughout Poland a broad range of palaeolimnological studies have been conducted. Their aim is to discover the historical development of water basins and climatic changes in the course of the last 13,000 years and also to investigate the gradual influence of man on the ecosystem with particular emphasis on the last few decades. The hitherto obtained results of palaeolimnological studies, including the results of Cladocera analysis, have yielded information about the development of lakes and provided the basis for plans of certain reservoirs and their basins. Over the past years, analysis of subfossil Cladocera has become one of the leading palaeolimnological methods. The results of detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of Cladocera remains from sediments of 15 lakes allowed for a reconstruction of the lakes' development. The littoral and limnetic regions, changing trophy, from oligotrophy to advanced eutrophication, changes in pH and fluctuation of water levels, as well as changes resulting from settlement — from Mesolithic and Neolithic through Medieval times until the present — have been reconstructed. For individual lakes, phases of Cladocera development and periods of eutrophication were indicated which partially correlated with certain pollen zones as well as periods of human impact and geochemical effects.  相似文献

The effects of acidification on metal budgets of lakes and catchments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Metal (Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn and Al) budgets were measured for 5 lakes and their catchments near Sudbury, Ontario, an area severely affected by the emission and deposition of strong acids (H2SO4/SO2) and metals. Three of the lakes were circum-neutral (pH 6.3–7.1) during the study period, while one lake had a pH of 4.8 and a fifth had very low pH ( 4.4).The lakes' catchments were all sources of Al, Mn and Ni, but were sinks for Cu and Zn. The Fe results were inconsistent; two lakes' catchments were sources while three were sinks.The acidic lakes were conservative (i.e. net retention of zero) with respect to Cu and Ni, while the circum-neutral lakes were effective sinks for these 2 metals. All of the lakes were sinks for Zn and Al, but the acidic lakes were less effective. All lakes were also Fe sinks. While there was no pattern relative to the lakes' pH's, there was a trend towards increasing Fe retention with increasing water replenishment time. The most acidic lake was actually a source of Mn, while the others were sinks.  相似文献

Algal biomass, C:N:P (carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus) ratios and APA (biomass specific alkaline phosphatase activity) were measured in benthic algal communities on living substrates (mussels and macrophytes) and on rocks and stones (epilithon) in three lakes of different trophy. Benthic algal communities on living substrates had lower C:N:P ratios than epilithon, whereas algal biomass was highest on rocks and stones. Benthic algal biomass increased with the trophic level of a lake despite an increase of C:N:P ratios in the benthic community. The differences in C:N:P ratios and algal biomass between lakes of different trophy were higher on inert substrates than on macrophytes and mussels, probably because algae on living substrates could compensate a poor nutrient supply from lake water with substrate nutrients. However, the substrate was not, as expected, the most important nutrient supply in the oligotrophic lake, but in the eutrophic lake. Therefore, differences between inert and living substrates in a single lake were highest in the eutrophic lake. APA values of the oligotrophic lake were very high especially for benthic algae on stones, indicating an ability of the community to take up nutrients from organic sources. In conclusion, living substrates were an important nutrient source for benthic algae and the importance of this nutrient supply did not decrease with increasing lake trophy.  相似文献

According to the Water Framework Directive, the results of the ecological status assessment should be accompanied with estimates of the level of confidence and precision of the determination. The Polish macrophyte-based method for lake assessment (Ecological State Macrophyte Index, ESMI) was tested for its uncertainty. The data from 12 lakes surveyed using four modifications of the sampling procedure, different numbers of transects and by two or three independent surveyors were analysed and the risk of misclassification was estimated. The choice of the sampling technique had no effect on abundance parameters (C max and %cover), but it affected significantly the taxonomic composition indices (H and J′). It did not influence, however, the final assessment result, since in all the methods used, the ESMI values were comparable and showed no significant differences of means. Although the mean ESMI values were statistically indifferent and gave the same assessment result irrespective of the number of transects surveyed, the lower the number of transects, the higher the SD value and the more uncertain the assessment result. The risk of misclassification of the 12 lakes varied from 0.5% to over 40% depending on the sampling standard deviation value and the proximity of the index observed value to the class boundary.  相似文献

The distribution of ostracod valves was studied in seven short (< 50 cm) sediment cores collected from the sublittoral-profundal zones (depth > 12 m) of four lowland, dimictic lakes (Kamedu?, Szelment Ma?y, Szelment Wielki and Szurpi?y) situated in the Eastern Suwa?ki Lakeland of NE Poland. These postglacial channel lakes are still moderate in trophy level, but to some extent, they differ from each other in the increase of anthropogenic alterations, especially in their hypolimnion. The studied sediment sequences, corresponding roughly to the period of the last ca. 300 years, yielded ca. 5500 valves of 20 ostracod species, out of which only seven are here considered as the autochthonous profundal component of the fossil assemblages: Candona candida, C. neglecta, Fabaeformiscandona protzi, F. tricicatricosa, Bentocypria curvifurcata, Cytherissa lacustris and Limnocytherina sanctipatricii. Valves of the remaining species were most probably subjected to postmortem transport from shallow water deposits or from lakeside and/or subaqueous springs, and thus were not deposited in situ at the deep bottom. By clustering classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination, three major assemblage types were recognised in the moderately eutrophicated parts of the studied lakes: (a) assemblage dominated by C. candida, (b) assemblage dominated by C. lacustris and (c) the most diverse assemblage, in which four species (C. lacustris, C. candida, F. protzi and C. neglecta) occur in more or less equal percentages. On the other hand, sediments of the most eutrophic basins of the lakes (especially in Kamedu? and Szelment Ma?y) are characterised by the decline of total valve abundances and complete extinction of C. lacustris, a species indicative of low trophy, so that, in extreme cases, a few valves (if any) of more eurytopic or only allochthonous species could be found in some of the uppermost layers. Successional transitions of the recognised assemblage types are discussed according to the generalised model of the deep lacustrine ostracod succession previously established for the Polish lakes on the country scale. The recorded assemblages correspond well with the trophic diversity of the studied lakes, confirming inferences based on previously published data on other trophy indices from this area. Finally, additional data on modern profundal ostracod fauna from dredge samples of the studied lakes are also provided.  相似文献

The ETS (electron transport system) assay to measure respirationof aquatic organisms has been widely applied in studies of marinemetabolism, but its use in freshwaters has been much more limited.This method calculates oxygen consumption from the measuredETS activity using an empirical conversion factor. This factorhas been calculated for various marine organisms, and for naturalplankton communities, but calibrations for freshwater organismsare lacking. The aim of this paper was to determine the relationshipbetween lake plankton respiration and ETS activity, based onmeasured epilimnetic plankton oxygen uptake and ELS activityin 20 southern Quebéc lakes. The relationship betweenplankton oxygen consumption and ETS varies significantly bothwithin lakes over the growing season, and among lakes. The magnitudeof the error associated with calculating respiration from ETSis, however, similar to the error in other standard limnologicalprocedures used in plankton carbon flow studies. Oxygen consumptionis not a linear function of ETS across the range of lakes, butis rather a power function. The respiration:ETS ratio for lakeplankton therefore not constant: it is high in oligotrophicand colored lakes, and declines with trophy. These results areconsistent with the changes expected in the structure of theplankton along trophic gradients.  相似文献

Studies carried out on 8 lakes in the czna-Wodawa Lakeland of eastern Poland indicated that the qualitative and quantitative structure of zooplankton was clearly correlated with the lake trophy state. In the spring zooplankton of lakes affected by gradual natural eutrophication were dominated by rotifers. In the zooplankton of lakes strongly affected by human activities, Cladocera dominated. With an increase in lake trophy there was an increase in the number of species that were indicators of eutrophy and a decrease in the number of indicators of mesotrophy. The total number of species in individual lakes tended to increase with an increase in trophy.  相似文献

1. Taxonomic composition and abundance of heterotrophic flagellates (HF) were studied in 55 lakes with different trophy in northern Germany using a live-counting technique.
2. Mean abundances and biomasses of HF ranged from 169 cells L−1 and 22 μg L−1 in mesotrophic lakes to 2439 cells mL–1 and 475 μg L−1 in hypertrophic lakes, respectively. Highest values were generally observed in spring, but mesotrophic lakes showed maximum values in early summer.
3. The taxonomic composition of HF was not significantly influenced by lake trophy and season. The major fraction of HF consisted of chrysomonads and Protista incertae sedis; other important groups were choanoflagellates and bicosoecids. The size distribution of HF changed with lake trophy and season, with a higher proportion of large HF (> 10 μm) in hypertrophic lakes and in spring, respectively.
4. Correlation analyses revealed a strong negative impact of cladocerans on total HF biomass and especially on large HF. Ciliates and large bacteria (> 10 μm) were strongly positively correlated with HF biomass; small bacteria (< 2 μm) showed a weak positive correlation.
5. Analyses at the level of species and genera revealed distinct distribution patterns of some taxa. Paraphysomonas , Aulacomonas and Quadricilia as large-bodied HF showed highest abundance in hypertrophic lakes and in spring. Attached taxa (e.g. Monosiga , Salpingoeca amphoridium ) were highly abundant in late summer and autumn, whereas Spumella and Kathablepharis occurred frequently in most samples.  相似文献

The major objective of these studies was to assess the extent of the flow of released dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) from phytoplankton to heterotrophic bacteria. The second aim was to test Nalewajko and Schindler's (1976) hypothesis that the percentage of extracellular release (PER) of RDOC by phytoplankton is higher in oligotrophic than eutrophic waters. The studies on the relationship between the bacterial assimilation of RDOC and productivity of phytoplankton in the lakes of different trophy have shown a direct correlation. It was observed that higher utilization rate of phytoplankton RDOC occurred in lakes with higher primary production. The inverse relationship between productivity of lakes, i.e. trophy of waters, and amount of RDOC or PER is closely dependent on the heterotrophic activity of bacteria in waters.  相似文献

Pollen input to the water surfaces of maar crater lakes Barrine and Eacham (1km(2) and 0.5km(2) respectively, ca. 720m a.s.l.), surrounded by rainforest in northeastern Australia, were measured in floating Tauber traps for a variety of periods spanning the years 1978 to 1985. The mean weekly total pollen catch is 75% of that estimated for the surrounding region of varied vegetation. Regardless of their sources, the influxes of pollen taxa are unevenly distributed over the lakes' surfaces. There is similar variation through time, with some indication that this might be smoothed over periods of 5years or more. There are no inflow streams and pollen input down surrounding slopes is negligible. Mean total pollen influx to seston traps close to the lakes' bottoms (1979 to 1988) is <5% of that to the Tauber traps, a discrepancy attributed to trap design. In contrast, mean annual influx measured by the Tauber traps is similar to that estimated from dated sediment samples younger than 1966 AD at Lake Barrine. The proportions of different pollen taxa are less affected by trap position or period of exposure than are their influxes; their mean percentages for Tauber traps, seston traps and sediment samples are all rather similar.The similarity between the mean contribution of exclusively rainforest pollen to the lakes' surfaces (56%) and to Oldfield traps in rainforest interiors (51%) emphasizes the importance of the rainforests, which clothe the crater walls, as sources of pollen to the lakes. The impact of pollen from other vegetation in the region, although present, is much smaller than at interfaces between rainforest and other vegetation types. All this pollen is mixed within and above the crater and delivered to the lakes' surfaces by gravity and frequent rainfall. Limnological processes redistribute it in the water body before it is incorporated into the deep-lake sediments.The value and limitations of current pollen transport and accumulation theory are noted in relation to sites with morphologies similar to these two crater lakes and to the irregular flowering and floristic inhomogeneity of tropical rainforest. The potential for the use of modern pollen input data in the interpretation of pollen analyses from the sediments of such sites is explored.  相似文献

Carbon stable isotope analysis was carried out on zooplankton from 24 United Kingdom lakes to examine the hypothesis that zooplankton dependence on allochthonous sources of organic carbon declines with increasing lake trophy. Stable isotope analysis was also carried out on particulate and dissolved organic matter (POM and DOM) and, in 11 of the lakes, of phytoplankton isolates. In 21 of the 24 lakes, the zooplankton were depleted in 13C relative to bulk POM, consistent with previous reports. δ13C for POM showed relatively little variation between lakes compared to high variation in values for DOM and phytoplankton. δ13C values for phytoplankton and POM converged with increasing lake trophy, consistent with the expected greater contribution of autochthonous production to the total organic matter pool in eutrophic lakes. The difference between δ13C for zooplankton and that for POM was also greatest in oligotrophic lakes and reduced in mesotrophic lakes, in accordance with the hypothesis that increasing lake trophic state leads to greater dependence of zooplankton on phytoplankton production. However, the difference increased again in hypertrophic lakes, where higher δ13C values for POM may have been due to greater inputs of 13C-enriched organic matter from the littoral zone. The very wide variation in phytoplankton δ13C between lakes of all trophic categories made it difficult to detect robust patterns in the variation in δ13C for zooplankton. Our objective was to assess the potential of Cladocera from mountain lakes for climate reconstruction. We related Cladocera from surface sediments of Alpine lakes (1,502–2,309 m asl) to 29 abiotic environmental variables using statistical methods. The environmental dataset included water chemistry, lake depth, and bi-hourly water-temperature logs, which were used to assess mean monthly water temperatures, dates of freezing and breakup, spring and autumn mixing. We found 14 different Cladocera of the families Bosminidae, Daphniidae, and Chydoridae. Lakes without Cladocera (eight lakes) were cold and/or ultra-oligotrophic, whereas lakes with planktonic and littoral Cladocera (19 lakes) were warmer and/or less oligotrophic. Lakes with only littoral Cladocera (18 lakes) had intermediate water temperatures/trophy. Changes in Cladocera assemblages were related to changes in climate, nutrients, and/or alkalinity. We found a climate threshold at which Bosminidae disappeared in 95% of the lakes. For climate-change research, we propose studying Cladocera along transects that include climatic thresholds. Water quality greatly influences the population density of aquatic biota, including parasites. In order to evaluate the relationship between fish parasites and water quality in Kashmir Himalayas, we assessed helminth parasite densities in Schizothorax niger Heckel, 1838 (an endemic cyprinid fish of Kashmir) from three lakes, namely Anchar, Manasbal and Dal, which reflected the varied stages of eutrophication. The overall prevalence of helminth infections was higher in the hypertrophic Anchar Lake (prevalence = 18.6%) compared to Manasbal Lake, which was the least eutrophied (prevalence = 6.4%). Furthermore, mean prevalence of monoxenous and heteroxenous parasites was higher in lakes containing higher levels of water degradation (Anchar and Dal). The mean number of helminth species per fish host was the highest in the hypertrophic lake (1.3 ± 0.3) in comparison to the least eutrophic lake (0.2 ± 1.5). Variability of calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance) revealed that helminth parasite composition in the fish was affected by the lakes' environmental stress (degraded water quality). Therefore, data on the density of helminth parasites in fish can provide supplementary information on the pollution status of a water body.  相似文献

提出了湖泊生态系统健康定量评价的一种新方法生态系统健康指数法。该方法首先设计了一个0~100的生态系统健康指数作为定量尺度,然后通过评价指标选择、各指标生态系统健康分指数计算、各指标权重计算、生态系统健康综合指数计算等基本步骤,评价湖泊生态系统健康状态。以实用实例对意大利西西里湖泊群及单个湖泊进行了生态系统健康评价。结果表明,该方法原理简单,计算简便,结果可靠、直观,既可用于同一湖泊又可用于不同湖泊生态系统健康状态的定量评价与比较,是一种值得推广的定量评价方法。  相似文献

对湖库湿地进行生态健康评价,可为湖库湿地生态系统修复和管理提供决策依据。本文以天津市为例,选取20个典型的湖库湿地采样点,基于2018年8—9月期间调查获取的物理、化学和生物群落指标(浮游动物、浮游植物、底栖动物、鱼类、水生大型植物、河岸带植物)数据,构建包含物理完整性、化学完整性和生物完整性在内的生态完整性指数(IEI)对采样点生态健康状况进行评价。根据栖息地环境质量(QHEI)、水质状况和人类活动干扰3方面选取参照点,采用标准化方法筛选候选指标,应用层次分析法计算各指标权重,最终得出天津市典型湖库湿地生态完整性评价结果。结果表明: 1)所有样点中,“健康”点位占5.0%,“较好”点位占20.0%,“一般”点位占35.0%,“较差”点位占30.0%,“差”点位占10.0%。天津市典型湖库湿地生态健康状况整体处于一般水平,呈现出西部优于东部的趋势,空间差异显著;2)基于栖息地评分、水质状况与人类活动干扰相结合选取参照点是可行的,依据水质指标可降低选择参照点时的主观性;3)适用性验证结果表明,IEI可较好表征各点位的健康状况,区分效率明显,适用于评价研究区湖库湿地生态健康状况。  相似文献

The horizontal variation of chlorophyll a (chl a) and C:N:P (carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus) ratio was estimated for benthic algal communities attached to living substrates (mussels and macrophytes) and to rocks and stones in three lakes of different trophy. Samples were taken in a nested hierarchical design with replicates separated by several cm, dm, 10 m, and km. The observed horizontal variation of chl a, C:N, and C:P ratios did not differ for horizontal scales, substrates, or lakes. Although the investigated lakes were quite unlike regarding nutrient status, light regime, or morphology, the patchiness was similar in all lakes. Moreover, patchiness was also similar on stones, macrophytes and mussels, although those substrates differed in longevity and surface structure. Similar patchiness regardless of scale, substrate, or sampled lake, implies the possibility of using an optimal sampling design calculated for one lake and substrate also in other lakes and on other substrates.  相似文献

Given the important role of lake ecosystems in social and economic development, and the current severe environmental degradation in China, a systematic diagnosis of the ecological security of lakes is essential for sustainable development. A Driving-force, Pressure, Status, Impact, and Risk (DPSIR) model, combined with data screening for lake ecological security assessment was developed to overcome the disadvantages of data selection in existing assessment methods. Correlation and principal component analysis were used to select independent and representative data. The DPSIR model was then applied to evaluate the ecological security of Dianchi Lake in China during 1988-2007 using an ecological security index. The results revealed a V-shaped trend. The application of the DPSIR model with data screening provided useful information regarding the status of the lake’s ecosystem, while ensuring information efficiency and eliminating multicollinearity. The modeling approach described here is practical and operationally efficient, and provides an attractive alternative approach to assess the ecological security of lakes.  相似文献
