1. Food quality has major effects on the transfer of energy and matter in food webs, and essential long‐chained polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can affect the quality of phytoplankton as food. In a study of oligotrophic lakes in north‐western Sweden, we investigated the fatty acid composition of four planktonic cladocerans and two calanoid copepods, representing herbivorous and carnivorous species. We also collected seston samples. 2. The proportions of long‐chain PUFAs in the organisms increased with their increasing trophic position. Thus, both their quality as food for other organisms, as well as their requirement for fatty acids (FAs), differed among taxa and depended on their trophic position. 3. We found taxon‐specific differences in the FA composition of zooplankton that were not related to sestonic FA composition. This implies that the variation in zooplankton FA composition is constrained by phylogenetic origin, life history characteristics, or both. 4. The cladoceran taxa contained 12–23% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) but only 0.9–2.1% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) of the total FA content. In contrast, the calanoid copepods contained 7–11% EPA and 14–21% DHA. Thus, our results show that differences in the PUFA content among zooplankton species could have repercussions for both food web structure and function.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of the pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis larvae was studied to elucidate potential dietary relationships. Their principal fatty acids were characteristic for membrane lipids of aquatic organisms. The fatty acid composition varied little throughout seasons, with high proportions of 22 : 6(n‐3) (27% of total fatty acids), which is biosynthesized de novo from dietary precursor fatty acids and/or accumulated from the diet. Other major fatty acids were 16 : 0 and 18 : 0. The diatom‐typical 16 : 1(n‐7) and other dietary fatty acids (zooplankton and microplankton) are not reflected in the larvae, thus limiting the use of fatty acids as trophic markers for food web relationships of atherinopsids.  相似文献

Mature and immature individuals of the deep-water detritus-feeder Benthodytes lingua Perrier and mature specimens of the mid-water detritus-feeders Stichopus tremulus (Gunnerus) and Mesothuria verrilli (Theel) have been analysed by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric techniques for their component sterols. The results indicate a highly variable sterol and stanol composition amongst holothurians irrespective of water depth, probable diet or even life stage. It is suggested that the complex sterol mixtures found reflect specific structural requirements of holothurians for both component sterols and stanols.  相似文献

The trophic structure of cold-water coral reef communities at two contrasting locations, the 800-m deep Belgica Mounds (Irish margin) and the 300-m deep Træna reefs (Norwegian Shelf), was investigated using stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and fatty-acid composition analysis. A broad range of specimens, with emphasis on (commercial) fish specie's, and organic matter sources were sampled using a variety of tools. Irrespective of the environmental and geographical setting, the δ15N values indicated that the food web encompasses roughly 1.5 to 3 trophic levels. Mobile echinoderms, i.e. sea urchins and sea stars, had highest δ15N values, indicative of a high trophic position in the food web. The fraction of bacterial fatty acids in reef fauna was generally low (<5%), indicating that enhanced bacterial production in the water column through seafloor seepage of nutrients (‘hydraulic theory’) does not form a significant energy pathway into the food web. The high fraction of algal and essential fatty acids in reef fauna and fish at both locations indicates a close coupling with surface productivity, but the transport mechanism depends on the hydrographic setting. At Træna, Calanus copepods and euphausiids form an additional link between primary production and fish, which is largely absent at Belgica Mounds. At Belgica Mounds, the reef community is primarily supported by phytodetritus, as evidenced by the high contribution of algal fatty acids in faunal tissue and seasonal chlorophyll a deposition and marine snow at the reef. The environmental setting of cold-water coral reefs influences the structure of the associated food web.  相似文献

Abyssal holothurians and sediment samples were collected at depths of 4,430 to 4,850 m in the Demerara abyssal plain. Bacterial concentrations in progressive sections of the holothurian digestive tract, as well as in surrounding surface sediments, were determined by epifluorescence microscopy. Total bacterial counts in sediments recently ingested by the animals were 1.5- to 3-fold higher than in surrounding sediments at the deepest station. Lowest counts were observed consistently in the foregut, where the digestive processes of the holothurian are believed to occur. In most animals, counts increased 3- to 10-fold in the hindgut. Microbial activity at 3°C and in situ and atmospheric pressure were determined for gut and sediment samples by measuring the utilization of [14C]glutamic acid, the doubling time of the mixed-population of culturable bacteria, and the percentage of the total bacterial count responsive to yeast extract in the presence of nalidixic acid, using epifluorescence microscopy. A barophilic microbial population, showing elevated activity under deep-sea pressure, was detected by all three methods in sediments removed from the hindgut. Transmission electron micrographs revealed intact bacteria directly associated with the intestinal lining only in the hindgut. The bacteria are believed to be carried as an actively metabolizing, commensal gut flora that transforms organic matter present in abyssal sediments ingested by the holothurian. Using data obtained in this study, it was calculated that sediment containing organic matter altered by microbial activity cleared the holothurian gut every 16 h, suggesting that abyssal holothurians and their associated gut flora are important participants in nutrient cycles of the abyssal benthic ocean.  相似文献

Fatty acid (FA) compositions were determined for the invader amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus collected from July to September 2002, in an overheated, high-conductivity dammed reservoir in north-eastern France. Predominant fatty acids were the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA): eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), linoleic acid (LA), arachidonic acid (ARA), linolenic acid (LNA) together with the monounsaturated fatty acid 18:1omega9 and the saturated fatty acid 16:0. FA markers indicated that available food was constituted of incompletely degraded phytodetritus and terrestrial inputs, as well as animal remains. PUFA contents depended on the diet and the capacity of animals to desaturate and elongate LNA and LA in long chain PUFA as EPA and ARA respectively. Based on their FA compositions, we showed that gammarids represent naturally-occurring freshwater sources of essential PUFA, and could play a fundamental role in pelagic-benthic coupling and energy recycling in the ecosystem. The complexity of the feeding strategies of D. villosus--detritivorous, omnivorous, carnivorous--makes this species efficient at exploiting different components of the available food and may be a key factor in its high invasive success.  相似文献

To examine the C(20) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) compositions of Collembola, we raised five species of Collembola on yeast diets, and then quantified body mass, neutral lipid fatty acid (NLFA) and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) compositions. PLFA content was always less than 5% of dry weight, but NLFA content varied from 5.9% to 29.6% of dry weight, depending upon species. Combined C(20) PUFA proportions of up to 9.2% and 48% were observed in the NLFA and PLFA fractions, respectively, resulting in total C(20) PUFA proportions of up to 19.4% of the total fatty acid compositions of Collembola. C(20) PUFAs were also detected in Collembola specimens from a deciduous woodland at proportions up to 29.7% of the total fatty acid composition. Terrestrial invertebrates generally contain <4% and <22% C(20) PUFAs in PLFAs and NLFAs, respectively; therefore, these results demonstrate that Collembola often possess the highest proportions of C(20) PUFAs yet observed in terrestrial invertebrates. The biochemical reasons for such high C(20) PUFA proportions, which were biosynthesised by the Collembola since these components were absent from the yeast diets, remain unclear. The distinctive fatty acid compositions of Collembola may be useful in soil food web studies utilising fatty acids as biomarkers of trophic behaviour.  相似文献

Lake Baikal is a unique freshwater environment with maximum depths over 1600 m. The high water pressure at the lakebed strengthens the solidifying effect of low water temperature on animal tissue lipids, and thus the effective temperatures in the depths of the lake equal subzero temperatures in shallow waters. Cottoidei species has colonized the different water layers of the lake, and developed different ecology and physiology reflected in their tissue biochemistry. We studied by gas chromatography the composition of fatty acids (FAs), largely responsible for tissue lipid physical properties, in the white muscle tissue of 13 species of the Cottoidei fish; five benthic abyssal, six benthic eurybathic and two benthopelagic species. The FA profiles reflected habitat depth. The muscles of the deepest living species contained little polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) and were instead rich in monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs), which may be due to occasional weak food web links to the PUFA-rich primary producers of the photic water layer, high MUFA supply from their benthic diet, and conversion of saturated FAs (SFAs) to MUFAs in the tissues of the fish. Despite the MUFA percentage among the abyssal species reached even 50% (by weight) of total FAs, the PUFA percentage still remained above 20% in every species. The muscle MUFA/SFA ratio correlated negatively with the PUFA content of the fish muscle, suggesting viscosity control integrating the fluidity contributions from the dietary PUFAs and potentially endogenous MUFAs.  相似文献

Changes in dietary composition and its effects on the fatty acid (FA) composition of young-of-the-year (YOY) pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) from an artificial reservoir (Mirgenbach—northeastern France) were related to body size as shown by stomach content and FA analyses. Comparisons were made between three size classes of fishes: 25–35 mm total length (TL), 35–45 mm TL and 45–55 mm TL. Diets of the youngest L. gibbosus (TL ≤ 35 mm) consisted mainly of zooplanktonic microcrustaceans and Chironomidae. Ontogenetic development influenced the FA composition of L. gibbosus. Older YOY L. gibbosus showed an increase in proportions of monounsaturated FA proportions and a decrease in polyunsaturated FA and mainly essential FA (particularly docosahexaenoic acid). The low ω3/ω6 ratio and low PUFA content (mainly on DHA) suggested that L. gibbosus would not transfer the benefits of consuming ω3 PUFA up the food web.  相似文献

A new opportunistic annelid (Ophryotrocha cyclops) discovered on benthic substrates underneath finfish aquaculture sites in Newfoundland (NL) may be involved in the remediation of organic wastes. At those aquaculture sites, bacterial mats and O. cyclops often coexist and are used as indicators of organic enrichment. Little is known on the trophic strategies used by these annelids, including whether they might consume bacteria or other aquaculture-derived wastes. We studied the lipid and fatty acid composition of the annelids and their potential food sources (degraded flocculent organic matter, fresh fish pellets and bacterial mats) to investigate feeding relationships in these habitats and compared the lipid and fatty acid composition of annelids before and after starvation. Fish pellets were rich in lipids, mainly terrestrially derived C18 fatty acids (18:1ω9, 18:2ω6, 18:3ω3), while bacterial samples were mainly composed of ω7 fatty acids, and flocculent matter appeared to be a mixture of fresh and degrading fish pellets, feces and bacteria. Ophryotrocha cyclops did not appear to store excessive amounts of lipids (13%) but showed a high concentration of ω3 and ω6 fatty acids, as well as a high proportion of the main fatty acids contained in fresh fish pellets and bacterial mats. The dorvilleids and all potential food sources differed significantly in their lipid and fatty acid composition. Interestingly, while all food sources contained low proportions of 20:5ω3 and 20:2ω6, the annelids showed high concentrations of these two fatty acids, along with 20:4ω6. A starvation period of 13 days did not result in a major decrease in total lipid content; however, microscopic observations revealed that very few visible lipid droplets remained in the gut epithelium after three months of starvation. Ophryotrocha cyclops appears well adapted to extreme environments and may rely on lipid-rich organic matter for survival and dispersal in cold environments.  相似文献

Ecologists and ecosystem managers often base their understanding of trophic dynamics on consumer and resource biomass. However, the factors that alter the relative nutritional value of resources are often poorly understood, despite their potential to decouple trophic interactions. Recent population declines in pelagic fishes of the upper San Francisco Estuary were not accompanied by an equivalent decrease in zooplankton biomass, which are the main resource for the fish and their larvae. It was hypothesized that changes in zooplankton nutritional conditions following the establishment of invasive species caused food‐quality related limitations for these higher‐order consumers. Using stable isotopes, elemental stoichiometry and fatty acid analyses for all dominant invasive and native zooplankton taxa and seston, we characterized the plankton community structure in the estuary and demonstrated taxon‐specific differences in their nutritional value. We then quantified the temporal dynamics in meso‐zooplankton proportions of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and ratio of n3:n6 fatty acids. We found temporal increase in the community‐level DHA, n3 to n6 fatty acid ratio, decrease in the community‐level EPA and PUFA in the brackish water region, but no change in the bulk PUFA proportions in the freshwater region of the estuary. These changes were caused mainly by declines of native cladocerans that are rich in EPA and by an increase in the dominance of invasive taxa with high DHA concentrations, similar to that of native taxa. Although we showed temporal shifts in individual fatty acid classes, the proportion of the essential fatty acids remained relatively high, suggesting that nutritional prey availability for fish remained unchanged with the shift in species composition. We argue that the nutritional content of resource communities should be considered when analyzing the long‐term trophic dynamics and designing effective management and restoration strategies.  相似文献

Antarctic salps (Salpa thompsoni and Ihlea racovitzai) and their commensal hyperiid amphipods (Vibilia antarctica, Cyllopus lucasii and C. magellanicus) were collected near Elephant Island, in the South Shetland Islands, during 1997 and the salp-rich year 1998. The sterol composition of aggregate S. thompsoni and I. racovitzai (mostly 24-methyl-5,22E-dien-3β-ol, 24-nordehydrocholesterol, cholesterol and trans-dehydrocholesterol) was reflected in the sterol composition of the commensal amphipods and was consistent with a herbivorous planktonic diet. This was not the case for solitary S. thompsoni, with 24-methylenecholesterol as the major sterol. There was a greater abundance of aggregate salp stanols in 1997 (11.7% total sterols) than 1998 (5.2%) and these different stanol levels were reflected in the commensal amphipods. Eicosapentaenoic acid [20:5(n-3)] and docosahexaenoic acid [22:6(n-3)] were the major polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in all organisms. Octadecapentaenoic acid [18:5(n-3)] comprised 0.4–5.8% (of total fatty acids) in all 1998 salps and amphipods, but was absent in 1997 samples. This suggests a greater presence of dinoflagellates or other species rich in 18:5(n-3) in the “salp year” 1998. Very long chain PUFA (C24, C26, C28) were also only detected in 1998 samples (up to 5.3%), reflecting commensalism and greater presence of dinoflagellates or species containing very long chain PUFA. The effect of a sub-inhibitory concentration of chlorhexidine on lipid and sterol composition of Candida albicans was investigated. The total lipid content of this yeast grown in the presence of chlorhexidine was reduced whilst the total sterol content was increased compared with control-grown cells. Lipids and sterol analyses of this yeast grown in the presence and absence of chlorhexidine are presented. Chlorhexidine-grown yeast had a higher level of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and monogalactosyldiacylglycerol. Lower proportions of phosphatidylinositol plus phosphatidylserine, phosphatidic acid and cardiolipin were found in C. albicans grown in the presence of the drug when compared with control-grown yeast. The major fatty acids in control-grown cells were C16 and C18. Drug grown-cells had higher proportions of palmitic acid (16 : 0) and stearic acid (18 : 0), but lower proportions of palmitoleic acid (16 : 1) and oleic acid (18 : 1). Chlorhexidine also decreased the unsaturated-to-saturated fatty acid ratio, while the C16/C18 ratios increased compared to control-grown cells. Differences in the fatty acid composition of major phospholipids and neutral lipids between drug and control-grown yeast were also detected. Sterol analysis of control-grown cells showed that the major sterol present was ergosterol (55.4% wt). A significant increase in ergosterol and obtusifoliol was observed in chlorhexidine-treated cells and a significant decrease in squalene and lanosterol. Our results suggested that chlorhexidine affected the lipid and sterol composition of C. albicans. 1. Fatty acids (FAs) have been widely applied as trophic biomarkers in aquatic food web studies. However, current knowledge of inter‐ and intraspecific variation in consumer FA compositions across spatial and temporal scales is constrained to a few pelagic taxa. 2. We analysed the FAs of 22 taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton and fish collected from the littoral, pelagic and profundal habitats of nine boreal oligotrophic lakes over spring, summer and autumn. We quantified and compared the FA variance partitions contributed by species identity (i.e. an integrative effect of phylogenetic origin, life history and functional feeding guild of individual taxa), site and season using partial redundancy analysis both on all consumers and on benthic arthropods alone. 3. Species identity alone contributed 84.4 and 72.8% of explained FA variation of all consumers and benthic arthropods, respectively. Influences of site, season and all joint effects accounted for 0–11.3% only. Fatty acid profiles of primary consumers differentiated below class level, but those of predators were distinguishable only when they became more taxonomically distinct (i.e. among classes or higher). 4. Pelagic and profundal consumers showed stronger reliance on autochthonous resources than did their littoral counterparts as reflected by their higher ω3 to ω6 FA ratios. Polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) were increasingly retained with trophic levels, and saturated FAs (e.g. FA 16 : 0) gradually reduced. Ecologically, this trade‐off enhances the trophic transfer efficiency and confirms the importance of PUFA‐rich autotrophs in aquatic food webs. 5. Our findings indicate strong interspecific differences in FA requirements and assimilation among aquatic consumers from a wide range of taxonomic levels, habitats and lakes. Consumers were able to maintain homoeostasis in FA compositions across spatial and temporal changes in resource FAs, but consumer homoeostasis did not limit the effectiveness of FAs as trophic biomarkers.  相似文献

The free lipid content of extracts from the spawn of 17 molluscs were analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. These extracts encompass the encapsulated embryos and extraembryonic structures from benthic gelatinous egg masses and leathery egg capsules covering five taxonomic groups. Palmitic and stearic acids were the dominant saturated fatty acids and oleic acid was the principal unsaturated acid found in the spawn. Cholesterol was the dominant sterol and the only sterol found in the spawn from every species. Extracts from gelatinous egg masses were found to contain proportionally more fatty acids compared to leathery egg capsules. No unsaturated fatty acids were found in any of the leathery egg capsules, including five neogastropods and one littorinimorph. Unsaturated fatty acids were present in all of the gelatinous egg masses, including two other littorinimorphs. This is the first study to demonstrate that unsaturated fatty acids possess significant bacteriolytic activity against four aquatic pathogens. Encapsulated Anaspidea egg masses contain relatively high concentrations of these unsaturated fatty acids and a lipid mixture modeled on these extracts was strongly bacteriolytic at concentrations down to 0.0001 mg/ml. By comparison, lipid mixtures modeled on extracts from the spawn of four other molluscan taxa with higher proportions of saturated fatty acid and cholesterol, were only partially active against some of the bacteria at 0.1 mg/ml. Thus, unsaturated fatty acids could explain the antimicrobial activity previously reported in lipid extracts of some, but not most, molluscan spawn. MDS ordination and ANOSIM revealed significant taxonomic differences in the composition of free lipids from molluscan spawn, suggesting that lipid analyses may be useful in future systematic studies of the Mollusca.  相似文献

The detailed sterol (free sterol proportions and compositions) and phospholipid (PL) compositions (relative proportions of PL classes and subclasses and their respective fatty acid (FA) compositions) of hemocyte membranes were investigated in two bivalve mollusks: the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Hemocyte membrane lipids of both species revealed similar general composition: i) their free sterol/PL ratio was above 0.4 and ii) their PL were predominated by the diacyl+alkyl forms of glycerophosphatidylcholine (PC), the plasmalogen form of glycerophosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and ceramide aminoethylphosphonate (CAEP). Free sterols were predominated by cholesterol in both species. Plasmalogen forms of PE and glycerophosphatidylserine (PS) represented 82-83% and 46-55% of total PE and PS, respectively. When compared to their respective diacyl+alkyl forms, plasmalogen forms of PE and PS were specifically enriched in non-methylene-interrupted (NMI) FA and 20:1n-11, suggesting a functional significance of these PL molecular species in bivalve hemocytes. Lysoglycerophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC) levels were found to be fairly high in hemocytes, accounting for about 8% of the PL. Some species-specific features were also found. LysoPC and glycerophosphatidylinositol (PI) FA compositions differed between Ruditapes philippinarum and Crassostrea gigas. CAEP proportion was higher in R. philippinarum than in C. gigas (14.5% and 27.9% of the PL, respectively). Hemolymph cell monolayer observations and flow-cytometric analyses revealed species-specific hemocyte morphology and sub-populations which could account for some of the observed species-specific membrane lipid compositions.  相似文献

A series of unusual odd-chain fatty acids (OC-FA) were identified in two thraustochytrid strains, TC 01 and TC 04, isolated from waters off the south east coast of Tasmania, Australia. FA compositions were determined by capillary GC and GC–MS, with confirmation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) structure performed by analysis of 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives. PUFA constituted 68–74% of the total FA, with the essential PUFA; eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5ω3, EPA), arachidonic acid (20:4ω6, AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6ω3, DHA), accounting for 42–44% of the total FA. High proportions of the saturated OC-FA 15:0 (7.1% in TC 01) and 17:0 (6.2% in TC 04) were detected. The OC-FA 17:1ω8 was present at 2.8% in TC 01. Of particular interest, the C21 PUFA 21:5ω5 and 21:4ω7 were detected at 3.5% and 4.1%, respectively, in TC 04. A proposed biosynthesis pathway for these OC-PUFA is presented. It is possible that the unsaturated OC-PUFA found previously in a number of marine animals were derived from dietary thraustochytrids and they could be useful biomarkers in environmental and food web studies.  相似文献

We experimentally investigated effects of nutrient enrichment and trophic structure in a microbial food web consisting of mixed bacteria, two bacterivorous ciliates ( Tetrahymena sp. and Colpidium sp.) and an omnivorous ciliate ( Blepharisma sp.) feeding on both trophic levels. We assembled all possible food webs including one or more of the ciliate species and cross-classified them with four levels of enrichment of the bacterial medium. The qualitative outcome of food web interactions was independent of enrichment and always the same: Tetrahymena strongly depressed or excluded Colpidium , and Blepharisma strongly depressed or excluded both bacterivores. Consequently, in all sub-webs only the dominant ciliate species responded positively to enrichment. The total density of bacteria increased with enrichment irrespective of food web composition. In contrast, the response of single-celled bacteria to enrichment depended on food web composition and was only weakly positive in most food webs with the omnivore. Enrichment had a positive effect on the relative success of (presumably more defended) bacterial aggregates. The outcome of interspecific interactions among ciliates could not be predicted from monoculture experiments and deviated from earlier experiments in which each bacterivore coexisted separately with the omnivore. As a potential explanation we suggest that changes in experimental protocol reduced spatial heterogeneity and increased attack rates. A simple, dynamical model shows that increased attack rates can indeed greatly decrease the upper limit and range of enrichment over which intermediate consumers can coexist with omnivores.  相似文献

Using bulk tissue and fatty acid 13C analysis we investigated major trophic pathways from soil microorganisms to microbial consumers to predators in conventional versus organic farming systems planted for the first time with maize. Organic farming led to an increase in microbial biomass in particular that of fungi as indicated by phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs). Microbial PLFAs reflected the conversion from C3 to C4 plants by a shift in δ13C of 2‰, whereas the isotopic signal in fatty acids (FAs) of Collembola was much more pronounced. In the euedaphic Protaphorura fimata the δ13C values in maize fields exceeded that in C3 (soybean) fields by up to 10‰, indicating a close relationship between diet and vegetation cover. In the epedaphic Orchesella villosaδ13C values shifted by 4‰, suggesting a wider food spectrum including carbon of former C3 crop residues. Differences in δ13C of corresponding FAs in consumers and resources were assessed to assign food web links. P. fimata was suggested as root and fungal feeder in soybean fields, fungal feeder in conventional and leaf consumer in organically managed maize fields. O. villosa likely fed on root and bacteria under soybean, and bacteria and fungi under maize. Comparison of δ13C values in FAs of the cursorial spider Pardosaagrestis and O. villosa implied the latter as important prey species in soybean fields. In contrast, the web‐building spider Mangora acalypha showed no predator–prey relationship with Collembola. The determination of δ13C values in trophic biomarker FAs allowed detailed insight into the structure of the decomposer food web and identified diet‐shifts in both consumers at the base of the food web and in top predators in organic versus conventional agricultural systems. The results indicate changes in major trophic links and therefore carbon flux through the food web by conversion of conventional into organic farming systems.  相似文献
