Freshwater discharge from a hydroelectric power plant had astrong impact on plankton transport and distribution withinthe fjord system. Most zooplankters submerged beneath the outgoingbrackish current, and subsequent advection by the compensationcurrent caused high concentrations near the power plant outlet.Currents driven by wind-induced changes in the density fieldin the adjacent coastal waters dominated transport between thefjord system and Outer regions. Normal plankton advection ratesappeared to be on the same order of magnitude as local zooplanktongrowth within the fairly enclosed system. However, during strong,short-term intrusions of coastal water, plankton compositionand distribution changed markedly in the course of a few days.The bathymetry seemed to be decisive for the distribution ofAcartia, which was recurrently found in highest numbers at theshallowest sampling location.  相似文献

Short-term variations in the zooplankton community in relationto hydrographical exchange processes were studied from Februaryto April 1985 in the sill area of the Gullmar fjord, situatedon the west coast of Sweden. It was concluded that the hydrodynamicprocesses were of great importance for the short-term variationsin the zooplankton abundance and species composition. Furthermore,it was found that due to the complex nature of the exchangeprocesses and zooplankton patchiness, the predictability ofthe development of the zooplankton community in the fjord ispoor. Fractionated sampling in stratified waters is discussed,as well as the effect of different water retention times aboveand below the halocline.  相似文献

The west coast of Spitsbergen is influenced by water masses of Atlantic and Arctic origin. During the winter of January–April 2006, water temperatures on the West Spitsbergen Shelf were ∼3°C warmer than typical winter conditions, leading to a coastal sea ice cover of reduced thickness, extent and duration. A sediment trap deployed from September 2005 to May 2006 in the outer basin of Kongsfjorden (NW Spitsbergen) at a depth of 115 m has provided a continuous winter time-series of zooplankton during a period of rapid increase in water temperatures. Prior to an anomalous and prolonged influx of warm Atlantic water (AW) starting at the end of January, the trap samples were dominated by the boreo-Arctic copepod Metridia longa. Species that increased in abundance during the influx included late stages of Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and Paraeuchaeta norvegica. The early introduction of shelf populations into the fjord, and thus increased copepod biomass relative to typical winter conditions with little advection, has implications for the marine pelagic food web and pelagic-benthic coupling.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The horizontal distributions of Daphnia longispina and Bosmina tongispina in Lake Kvernavatn (Norway) were investigated twice in 1982. In late spring, when populations were small, the two species inhabited the same areas, and they were evenly distributed from the littoral to the pelagic. At high population densities, during midsummer, the species were spatially segregated, D. longispina being pelagic and B. longispina littoral in distribution.
2. The distribution and feeding of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasteros-teus aculeatus) were also studied. The sticklebacks were apparently forced into littoral areas by larger piscivorous predators in the pelagic and they were consequently restricted to foraging primarily on B. longispina, which formed dense swarms during daytime in summer.
3. We suggest that predation and competition influence the spatial distribution of zooplankton species. The feeding efficiency of fish foraging on high-density zooplankton populations can be reduced by spatial segregation of zooplankton species. Where high local densities occur, due to swarm formation, predation is changed from size-selective feeding to consumption of spatially isolated individuals.  相似文献

Length-biomass regressions were established for the cladoceranBosmina longispina maritima and for the copepods Euryremoraaffinis hirundoides and Limnocalanus macrurus, all common inthe Baltic Sea. Biomass was analysed as individual organic carboncontent. For Bosmina, length was a weak estimator of biomass;only 51% of the variation in carbon content was explained bylength. For pre-adult stages of copepods length was a rathergood estimator of biomass. For Euryremora nauplii. the length-carbonrelationship was best described by linear equations (r2 wasbetween 0.49 and 0.69), and for copepodite stages (CI-V) byexponential functions (r2 = 0.81). The regressions for two differentsampling areas (Baltic proper and Bothnian Bay) did not showstatistically significant differences. Among the copepodites(CI-V) of Limnocalanus there was a linear relationship betweenlength and carbon content (r2 = 0.76). In both copepod speciesthere was no or a weak correlation between length and biomassamong adults.  相似文献

Behaviour and diet of sea trout post-smolts in a Norwegian fjord system   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In order to study the behaviour of sea trout Salmo trutta L., in the early post-smolt phase, reared smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters and released in the estuary of the River Aurland (Western Norway) and observed for 31–137·5 h. The study was conducted in May-June 1991 and 1995 on a total of seven tagged smolts. The fish moved back and forth along the littoral zone close to the surface and migrated net distances of 100–8000 m. In 1991 the tagged fish were usually observed in schools averaging 24–55 fish, while the tendency to school was less pronounced in 1995. Post-smolts of wild and reared origin were caught by 25 m long gillnets in the littoral zone. In 1991 the mean distance to shore at capture was 4·3 m and the mean depth 0·6 m, and the corresponding numbers in 1995 were 8·0 and 0·8 m. The distribution of the post-smolts is explained by a general preference for shallow water caused by osmoregulatory problems in high-salinity deep water, together with a preference for the sheltered littoral zone and a strong predation pressure in the open sea from fast swimming pelagic fish predators and gulls Larus sp. Schooling seemed to restrict predation by cod Gadus morhua L., in the littoral zone in 1991, while no cod were observed in this habitat in 1995. In both years the stomach contents of the netted fish consisted mainly of terrestrial insects. Reared fish chose prey items similar to those taken by wild fish, but consumed less food.  相似文献

The influence of the predatory ostracod Australocypris insularis on zooplankton abundances and species composition in an Australian saline lake was monitored over 8 months in aquaria and tank microcosms. Control, Predator (double A. insularis Control densities) and No Predator (all A. insularis removed) treatments were set up in small 11.5l aquaria and large 883.5l tanks. Microcosm salinities were manipulated to accord with seasonal lake salinities and ranged from 35 to 110 gl-1. Densities of the calanoid copepods Calamoecia clitetellata and C. salina, the small ostracods Diacypris compacta and D. dietzi, and juvenile ostracods (excluding A. insularis) were significantly reduced by A. insularis predation in the aquaria experiments. Daphniopsis sp. was only present (in low numbers) in the No Predator aquaria. Results from the large tank experiments were not as clear-cut, due to difficulties in the manipulation of predator numbers. Differing salinity tolerances of predator and prey may confound the predation impact of A. insularis.  相似文献

A system containing the globular protein ubiquitin and 4,197 water molecules has been used for the analysis of the influence exerted by a protein on solvent dynamics in its vicinity. Using Voronoi polyhedra, the solvent has been divided into three subsets, i.e., the first and second hydration shell, and the remaining bulk, which is hardly affected by the protein. Translational motion in the first shell is retarded by a factor of 3 in comparison to bulk. Several molecules in the first shell do not reach the diffusive regime within 100 ps. Shell-averaged orientational autocorrelation functions, which are also subject to a retardation effect, cannot be modeled by a single exponential time law, but are instead well-described by a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) function. The underlying distribution of single-molecule rotational correlation times is both obtained directly from the simulation and derived theoretically. The temperature dependence of reorientation is characterized by a strongly varying correlation time, but a virtually temperature-independent KWW exponent. Thus, the coupling of water structure relaxation with the respective environment, which is characteristic of each solvation shell, is hardly affected by temperature. In other words, the functional form of the distributions of single-molecule rotational correlation times is not subject to a temperature effect. In order to determine the occurrence, distribution, and significance of mold species in groundwater- and surface water-derived drinking water in Norway, molds isolated from 273 water samples were identified. Samples of raw water, treated water, and water from private homes and hospital installations were analyzed by incubation of 100-ml membrane-filtered samples on dichloran-18% glycerol agar. The total count (number of CFU per 100 ml) of fungal species and the species diversity within each sample were determined. The identification of mold species was based on morphological and molecular methods. In total, 94 mold species belonging to 30 genera were identified. The mycobiota was dominated by species of Penicillium, Trichoderma, and Aspergillus, with some of them occurring throughout the drinking water system. Several of the same species as isolated from water may have the potential to cause allergic reactions or disease in humans. Other species are common contaminants of food and beverages, and some may cause unwanted changes in the taste or smell of water. The present results indicate that the mycobiota of water should be considered when the microbiological safety and quality of drinking water are assessed. In fact, molds in drinking water should possibly be included in the Norwegian water supply and drinking water regulations.  相似文献

The lumpsucker Cyclopterus lumpus is distributed throughout the North Atlantic Ocean and migrates considerable distances between offshore feeding areas and shallow inshore spawning grounds. The number of the lumpsucker has declined since the mid 1980s, probably as a result of overexploitation. The lumpsucker is the preferred host of the sea louse Caligus elongates, which is a problem for marine aquaculture. However, little is known about the biology of the lumpsucker. The aims of the study were to 1) examine the movements of female lumpsucker during the spawning migration, and 2) assess the potential for lumpsucker to act as a vector for transmission of parasites and diseases between aquaculture farms and wild fish. Twenty female lumpsuckers tagged with acoustic transmitters were released during the spawning season in the inner part of Øksfjord, northern Norway and their distribution was recorded by 22 automatic acoustic receivers. The average time until departure from the fjord was 3 days, and within 1 week all fish had left the fjord. Timing of departure from the fjord was unrelated with either tidal current patterns or the time of the day. A high proportion of the fish (75%) were recorded within 200 m of fish farms, but they did not stay for extended periods at these farms. Our results suggest that mature female lumpsucker exhibit a movement pattern characterized by rapid fjord-scale migrations during the spawning season, and that they are not attracted to salmon farms in the same way as a range of other fish species.  相似文献

The water exchange has been measured in oocytes of siredon mexicanum and rana temporaria, and in unfertilized eggs and early gastrulae of the former species, by recording the D2O? H2O exchange with the cartesian diver balance. In oocytes, where no diffusion barrier to water is demonstrable, the temperature coefficient Q10 for the exchange of water is about 1.3–1.4, corresponding to that of free diffusion. in unfertilized eggs, and in early gastrulae the exchange is considerably slowed down, indicating that a surface membrane to some extent limits the rate of exchange. at the same time the Q10 value is increased, lying in the range 2.3–3.8. since it is most likely that the exchange even in this case occurs by diffusion, but through membrane pores, it is concluded that the area available for diffusion (pore size or number, or both) increases with temperature.  相似文献

This paper discusses the influence of predation by a planktivorous fish on zooplankton assemblages within experimental billabongs. Results suggest that the presence of a small planktivorous fish in experimental billabongs had only a small influence on the structure of zooplankton assemblages and densities of rotifers. Microcrustacean populations were dominated by juveniles, however there were greater numbers of juveniles when the planktivorous fish were present.  相似文献

One- and two-year-old hatchery reared juveniles of seven freshwater resident and anadromous populations of Scandinavian brown trout were released in the outer and inner part of the Oslofjord and in the River Akerselva, flowing through the city of Oslo. Recapture rates were highest (mean 20.3%) for river released fish and lowest for those released in the outer (16.8%) and inner (12.1%) fjord. In general, recapture rate increased with fish size at release (r=0.76). When released in fresh water, most of the recaptures were from fresh water and when released in the fjord, most recaptures were from the fjord. In general, freshwater resident stocks showed a higher degree of freshwater residency than anadromous stocks. However, mean migratory distance was longer for freshwater resident than anadromous fish. Trout moved longer distances at sea when released in the outer than in the inner fjord. Specific growth rate and size at recapture varied among release sites and stocks; they were highest for fish released in the outer fjord and lowest for river-released trout. There was no consistent difference in sea growth between freshwater resident and anadromous stocks. Estimated total yield was highest for fish released in the outer fjord, whereas there was no significant difference in yields between trout released in the river and the inner Oslofjord.  相似文献

We recorded the observed and actual swimming speeds of Atlantic salmon and sea trout post-smolts in a Norwegian fjord system, and initiated studies on the orientation mechanisms of the post-smolts. We tracked Atlantic salmon and sea trout with acoustic transmitters for up to 14 h after release. The actual swimming speed and direction of a fish relative to the ground is the vector sum of the observed movements of the fish and the movements of the water. We determined actual swimming speeds and directions of the post-smolts, which reflect their real swimming capacities and orientation, by corrections for the speed and direction of the water current. The post-smolts were actively swimming. The observed direction of movement was dependent on the actual movement of the fish and not the water current. Water currents were not systematically used as an orientation cue either in Atlantic salmon or sea trout, as the actual movements were random compared to the direction of the water current. The actual movement of sea trout were in all compass directions, with no systematic pattern. The Atlantic salmon also moved in all compass directions, but with the lowest frequency of actual movement towards the fjord.  相似文献

依据2010年4月、7月和11月对浙江中部近海上升流海域进行的海洋调查资料,运用定量、定性方法,探讨了上升流对该海域浮游动物生态类群分布的影响.结果表明:3个季节共鉴定浮游动物64种,桡足类占主要优势,包括5个生态类群,分别是暖温带近海种、暖温带外海种、亚热带近海种、亚热带外海种和热带大洋种.在种类数组成上,春季以暖温带近海种为主,夏季则是亚热带近海种和亚热带外海种居多,秋季也是亚热带种居多,其中夏季暖温带种种类数要高于春季和秋季,这一现象与同时期东黄海沿海有所不同,主要是由于上升流将一些在海洋底部度夏的暖温种带至海洋表面造成的.此外,3个季节生态类群都是以近海种为主,表明沿岸流是影响这一海域的最主要的水团.在丰度组成上,4月暖温带近海种占总丰度的98.79%,7月暖温带近海种也是组成丰度的重要部分,10月则是亚热带近海种丰度最高.丰度组成所反映的规律与种类数组成规律一致.上升流的存在导致夏季近海暖温带种大量出现,是影响这一海域浮游动物生态类群组成的重要因素;受长江径流和椒江径流的影响,近海种成为主要生态类群,是这一海域浮游动物的一个重要的生态特征.  相似文献

Pennate diatoms, especially Aslerionella spp. and Tabellaria fenestrata , were the most important food items for smelts in Lake Mjøsa during the first month of external feeding; rotifers and early stages of copepods were eaten occasionally. Later, during summer and autumn, crustacean zooplankton (cladocerans and copepods) were the most important food items; selected species were Polyphemus pediculus, Eudiaptomus gracilis, Limnocalanus macrurus, Heterocope appendiculata. Leplodora kindti , and Bythotrephes longimanus ; some smelts larger than 7.4 cm fed on Mysis relicta . In 1979 and 1980, mean lengths of smelts in October-November were 4.7 cm and 7.2 cm, respectively. A difference in length increment between the two years may have resulted from summer water temperatures being higher in 1980 than in 1979.  相似文献

The sea surface microlayer is the interfacial boundary layer between the marine environment and the troposphere. Surface microlayer samples were collected during a fjord mesocosm experiment to study microbial assemblage dynamics within the surface microlayer during a phytoplankton bloom. Transparent exopolymer particles were significantly enriched in the microlayer samples, supporting the concept of a gelatinous surface film. Dissolved organic carbon and bacterial cell numbers (determined by flow cytometry) were weakly enriched in the microlayer samples. However, the numbers of Bacteria 16S rRNA genes (determined by quantitative real-time PCR) were more variable, probably due to variable numbers of bacterial cells attached to particles. The enrichment of transparent exopolymer particles in the microlayer and the subsequent production of a gelatinous biofilm have implications on air–sea gas transfer and the partitioning of organic carbon in surface waters.  相似文献

Understanding stomatal regulation is fundamental to predicting the impact of changing environmental conditions on vegetation. However, the influence of soil temperature (ST) and soil water content (SWC) on canopy conductance (gs) through changes in belowground hydraulic conductance (kbg) remains poorly understood, because kbg has seldom been measured in field conditions. Our aim was to (a) examine the dependence of kbg on ST and SWC, (b) examine the dependence of gs on kbg and (c) test a recent stomatal optimization model according to which gs and soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance are strongly coupled. We estimated kbg from continuous sap flow and xylem diameter measurements in three boreal species. kbg increased strongly with increasing ST when ST was below +8°C, and typically increased with increasing SWC when ST was not limiting. gs was correlated with kbg in all three species, and modelled and measured gs were well correlated in Pinus sylvestris (a model comparison was only possible for this species). These results imply an important role for kbg in mediating linkages between the soil environment and leaf gas exchange. In particular, our finding that ST strongly influences kbg in mature trees may help us to better understand tree behaviour in cold environments.  相似文献

The typology of temporary waterbodies in Saratov oblast has developed with a similarity in the composition of zooplankton species that serve as its foundation. Seven waterbody groups have been distinguished: waterbodies of flood lands, river valley terraces, steppe watersheds, brackish lagoons, brackish lagoons connected to irrigation networks, excavated ponds, and puddles. The specificity of zooplankton species composition in different types of temporary waterbodies is shown. A significant influence of waterbody lifetime on the number of zooplankton species has been revealed, with the waterbody capacity and surface area in the period of maximal water level also being of great importance.  相似文献
