In 70 obese women no correlation was found between body weight and serum cholesterol or triglyceride concentrations, but there was a significant correlation between weight and blood pressure. Weight reduction by diet or jejunoileal shunt was not accompanied by any significant change in serum lipid concentrations other than the decrease in serum cholesterol expected after intestinal bypass. Twelve months after bypass surgery was carried out on 14 patients, however, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly reduced and at levels appropriate to the patients'' new weights. These results suggest that obesity in women cannot be taken to indicate the presence of hyperlipidaemia and that sustained weight loss may lower blood pressure.  相似文献

Nutritional factors are known to influence metabolism and toxicity of several metals in animal experiments, but relevant human data are scarce and inconclusive. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that dietary calcium influences lead metabolism in humans. Blood lead concentrations were used as indicators of lead exposure and metabolism. Two groups of peasant women living in similar conditions in two different regions in Yugoslavia (100 in each) were chosen as subjects for this purpose. In region A, the dietary calcium intake was about 940 mg, and in region B about two times lower, i.e., 450 mg/day. The average blood lead concentration was significantly lower in women from region A (69 micrograms/L) than from region B (83 micrograms/L). Our results support the assumption that adequate calcium intake might be one of the preventive measures for decreasing lead absorption. This new evidence, sought for some time by nutritionists and toxicologists, needs further international confirmation.  相似文献

Monthly trends in deaths attributed to asthma in the 5-34 year age group were examined for England and Wales over the period 1960-82. Deaths were most frequent in the third quarter (July to September) and peaked in August. Analysis of the 1970-82 period showed that this variation was present in the three constituent age groups 5-14, 15-24, and 25-34 but was most pronounced in the 5-14 year olds.  相似文献

To determine whether blood lead concentration is elevated in iron-deficient infants, blood lead and serum ferritin concentrations, serum iron/transferring iron-binding capacity (Fe/TIBC) and complete blood counts were measured in 30 iron deficient and 35 control infants, aged 6–24 months. All 30 iron-deficient infants received iron supplementation (ferric hydroxide-polymaltose complex, 6 mg/kg Fe3+/day) for 1–6 months. Blood lead concentrations were measured in 18 of the iron deficient infants after their ferritin levels returned to the normal range. The geometric mean blood lead concentration was higher in iron deficient than in control infants (1.846 vs. 1.416 μg/dL). After iron therapy, the blood lead levels of iron-deficient infants decreased significantly compared with pre-treatment levels (1.785 vs. 2.386 μg/dL), and the hemoglobin and ferritin concentrations increased significantly. These findings indicate that iron deficiency increases blood lead concentrations in infants with very low blood lead concentrations.  相似文献

The effect of androstenedione intake on serum hormone concentrations in women is equivocal. Therefore, we examined the hormonal response to androstenedione intake in healthy young (22.1 +/- 0.4 y) women for 4 hours. On day 3 of the follicular phase, subjects ingested placebo, 100, or 300 mg androstenedione in a random, double-blind, cross-over manner. Blood samples were collected before and every 30 min for 240 min after intake. Serum androstenedione concentrations (means +/- SE) increased above basal (6.2 +/- 0.8 nmol/l) from 60-240 min for both 100 mg (22.6 +/- 1.0 nmol/l at 240 min) and 300 mg (28.1 +/- 1.3 nmol/l at 210 min). Androstenedione intake increased serum total testosterone concentrations above basal (1.2 +/- 0.2 nmol/l) from 120-240 min (5.5 +/- 0.9 nmol/l at 210 min) with 100 mg and from 60-240 with 300 mg (10.2 +/- 1.6 nmol/l at 210 min). Androstenedione intake also increased serum estradiol concentrations (basal 191 +/- 24 pmol/l) at 150 min with 100 mg (237 +/- 35 pmol/l) and from 150-240 min with 300 mg (reaching 260 +/- 32 pmol/l at 240 min). These data indicate that, in contrast to men, androstenedione intake in women increases serum testosterone concentrations.  相似文献

Experimental data indicate that lead exposure decreases nitric oxide (NO) availability. However, no previous study has examined whether lead exposure affects plasma nitrite/nitrate (NO(x)) concentrations in humans. In addition, the T(-786)C polymorphism affects endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression and endogenous NO release. Here, we investigated whether there is an association between the circulating concentrations of NO(x) and the concentrations of lead in whole blood (B-Pb) and in plasma (P-Pb) from lead-exposed subjects. In addition, we also evaluated whether eNOS genotype for the T(-786)C polymorphism affects NO(x) concentrations in lead-exposed subjects. We studied 104 subjects exposed to lead who were non-smokers, 18-60 years of age, and not alcohol consumers. Genomic DNA was isolated from blood samples and genotypes for the T(-786)C polymorphism were determined by PCR and restriction fragment length digestion. Circulating NO(x) was determined by chemiluminescence. B-Pb and P-Pb were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, respectively. No significant correlations were found between NO(x) and B-Pb and P-Pb measured in the 104 subjects (all P > 0.05). However, while no significant correlation was found in subjects with TT genotype, a negative correlation was found between plasma NO(x) and B-Pb (r = 0.230, P = 0.048) and P-Pb (r = 0.194, P = 0.110) in subjects from TC + CC genotypes group. Our study shows a negative correlation between plasma NO(x) concentrations and B-Pb in carriers of the "C" allele, thus suggesting a possible mechanism possibly involved in lead exposure-induced increase in the susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases.  相似文献

Changes in osmolality and the concentration of cations (Na, K, Ca, Mg) were studied in blood serum of pregnant women from two weeks after conception, throughout the whole pregnancy, and within the first week after delivery. Altogether 239 women from 18 to 40 years of age were studied. Blood serum osmolality decreased from 287±0.8 to 278±1.6 mOsm/kg H2O from the fifth week of pregnancy and remained virtually at this level until the end of pregnancy. Hyponatremia was found during the three trimesters of pregnancy, in trimesters II and III hypokalemia was not observed, whereas hypocalcemia and hypomagnemia were found. On the first day after delivery, the blood serum osmolality and concentrations of magnesium ions returned to their levels in nonpregnant women, whereas concentrations of sodium and calcium ions remained decreased. No correlation was found between hypoosmia and changes in blood serum concentrations of ions under study during the three trimesters of pregnancy. Thus, in normal pregnancy, hypoosmia develops from the fifth week after conception and persists until delivery. The concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium ions are regulated by independent mechanisms to provide retention of these parameters within certain periods of pregnancy at the level of nonpregnant women on the background of hypoosmia.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo estimate the extent of changes in mean BLLs from colder to warmer months, in children aged 1–5 years with different status of lead in colder months.MethodologyWe performed a systematic review using an in-house algorithm developed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CINHAL. Search was performed between November 2012 and July 2013, and data evaluation and extraction were subsequently conducted. The mean BLLs observed in the warmer months was divided by the one observed in the colder months to obtain the warmer-to-colder ratio (WCR). Study-specific WCRs were pooled using the fixed-effects method of Mantel–Haenszel to estimate the combined WCR.ResultsFrom 4040 papers initially identified, eight cohort studies were considered relevant for inclusion. The combined WCR was inversely related to the BLLs observed during colder months. The values were 1.25 (95% CI: 0.90–1.60), 1.06 (95% CI: 0.92–1.19), and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.51–1.39) for children showing baseline BLLs of <10 μg dL−1, 10–20 μg dL−1and ≥20 μg dL−1, respectively. The combined WCR was influenced neither by children's age nor place/date of study.ConclusionThe extent of the summer increase in BLLs depends on the BLLs in the colder months.  相似文献
