Extensive landscape modification by humans has led to the fragmentation of riparian forests across North America. We compared the vegetation of extant riparian forest along an urban-rural disturbance gradient. In 1999, twenty-five sites along Assiniboine River in Manitoba, Canada were categorized according to land use: urban, suburban, high intensity rural, low intensity rural, and relatively high quality reference forest. Differences in herbaceous, shrub, and tree species composition and diversity were related to the proportion of surrounding land use, forest patch size, connectivity, and area:perimeter ratio. Urban riparian forests were more disturbed and isolated. They were smaller and characterized by drier, more alkaline soils. Moreover, they had significantly lower native and overall understorey species diversity, and had a higher proportion of exotics including Solanum dulcamara and Hesperis matronalis. Suburban forests were less disturbed, faced greater development pressure, and had sandier soils. Although suburban understorey diversity was similar to that of rural forests, suburban sites had a higher proportion of exotic species, especially escaped horticultural and invasive species including Caragana arborescens and Rhamnus cathartica. Reference sites were relatively large and exhibited greater connectivity, but there was little difference in species composition and diversity among high intensity rural, low intensity rural, and reference sites. These site types were less disturbed than either urban or suburban forests, and reference sites were characterized by hydrophilic species including Scirpus fluviatilis and Carex aquatilis. Our results suggest that landscape measures of disturbance, and related changes in environment, may be confidently used to assess impacts of land use on vegetation along urban-rural gradients. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Since the middle of the 19th century, the area covered by forests in France has doubled. These new forests grow on previous agricultural lands. We have studied the influence of this agricultural history on the 15N abundance of present-day forests planted on farmlands in the Vosges mountains (north-eastern France) between 1898 and 1930. Different types of land use were identified from old cadastres (1814–1836) of 16 farms. Ancient forests adjacent to farmlands were used as controls. Former pastures, meadows, croplands, gardens and ancient forests were compared for soil δ15N (fraction <50 μm and total soil), C/N, P and N content and fern (Dryopteris carthusiana) δ15N. The mean δ15N of soil increased in the order ancient forests (+0.0‰)<pastures (+1.4‰)<croplands (+1.6‰)<meadows (+2.5‰)<gardens (+3.8‰). This increase in soil δ15N with the intensity of former land use was related to the former input of 15N-enriched manure, and to an activation of soil nitrification leading to 15N-depleted nitrate export on previously manured parcels. Fern δ15N increased in the same order as soil δ15N in relation to past land use. The mean δ15N of fern in ancient forests (–4.4‰) and former pastures (–3.4‰) was 5‰ lower than soil δ15N and the two variables were strongly correlated. The δ15N of fern in formerly manured parcels varied little (cropland: –2.7‰, meadows: –2.6‰ and gardens: –2.2‰) and independently of soil δ15N, suggesting that the soil sources of fern N differed between unmanured and manured parcels. Understorey plant δ15N and soil δ15N appear to be excellent tracers of previous land use in forests, and could be used in historical studies. The persistence of high isotopic ratios in previously manured parcels, almost a century after afforestation, suggests a long-term influence of former land use on the N cycle in forest soils. We conducted an 8-year exclosure experiment (1999–2006) in a forest–tundra ecotonal area in northwestern Finnish Lapland to study the effects of reindeer grazing on vegetation in habitats of variable productivity and microhabitat structure. The experimental sites included tundra heath, frost heath and riparian habitats, and the two latter habitats were characterized by hummock-hollow ground forms. The total cover of vegetation, cover of willow (Salix spp.), dwarf birch (Betula nana), dwarf shrubs, forbs and grasses (Poaceae spp.) increased in exclosures in all habitats. The increase in the total cover of vegetation and in the covers of willow and dwarf birch tended to be greatest in the least productive tundra heath. Opposing to the increase in the dominant vascular plant groups, the cover and species number of bryophytes decreased in exclosures. We conclude that the effects of reindeer grazing on vegetation composition depend on environmental heterogeneity and the responses vary among plant groups. Natality and recruitment govern animal population dynamics, but their responses to fluctuating resources, competition, predation, shifting habitat conditions, density feedback and diseases are poorly understood. To understand the influences of climatic and land use changes on population dynamics, we monitored monthly changes in births and juvenile recruitment in seven ungulate species for 15 years (1989–2003) in the Masai Mara Reserve of Kenya. Recruitment rates declined for all species but giraffe, likely due to habitat alteration and increasing vulnerability of animals associated with recurrent severe droughts, rising temperatures, unprecedentedly strong and prolonged El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) episodes, expansion of settlements, cultivation and human population growth in pastoral ranches adjoining the reserve. Birth rate showed strong and humped relationships with moving averages of monthly rainfall, whereas recruitment responded strongly to cumulative past rainfall. Increasing livestock incursions into the reserve depressed recruitment rate for quarter-grown topi. Expansion of pastoral settlements depressed birth rate in impala, zebra and giraffe. Frequent ENSO-related droughts caused progressive habitat desiccation and hence nutritional shortfalls for ungulates. The responses to climatic, land use and resource influences did not reflect body size, migratory or resident lifestyle, dietary guild, digestive physiology or degree of synchrony of breeding of the ungulate species.  相似文献

Precipitation and land use in terms of livestock grazing have been identified as two of the most important drivers structuring the vegetation composition of semi-arid and arid savannas. Savanna research on the impact of these drivers has widely applied the so-called plant functional type (PFT) approach, grouping the vegetation into two or three broad types (here called meta-PFTs): woody plants and grasses, which are sometimes divided into perennial and annual grasses. However, little is known about the response of functional traits within these coarse types towards water availability or livestock grazing. In this study, we extended an existing eco-hydrological savanna vegetation model to capture trait diversity within the three broad meta-PFTs to assess the effects of both grazing and mean annual precipitation (MAP) on trait composition along a gradient of both drivers. Our results show a complex pattern of trait responses to grazing and aridity. The response differs for the three meta-PFTs. From our findings, we derive that trait responses to grazing and aridity for perennial grasses are similar, as suggested by the convergence model for grazing and aridity. However, we also see that this only holds for simulations below a MAP of 500 mm. This combined with the finding that trait response differs between the three meta-PFTs leads to the conclusion that there is no single, universal trait or set of traits determining the response to grazing and aridity. We finally discuss how simulation models including trait variability within meta-PFTs are necessary to understand ecosystem responses to environmental drivers, both locally and globally and how this perspective will help to extend conceptual frameworks of other ecosystems to savanna research.  相似文献

Forest paths are characterised by a zonation in vegetation composition as a result of gradients in abiotical conditions and continued recreational impact. Little is known about how much seed bank composition is affected by recreation and the existing path structure. As it is difficult to assess the contribution of seed banks to vegetation restoration, this study imparts relevant knowledge to restore vegetation on paths which are closed for recreational use. We surveyed seed bank and field layer vegetation composition in transects across path ecotones in deciduous forest. Analysis concentrated on seed bank characteristics and similarities of the seed bank and field layer vegetation in terms of ecological and seed size groups. A total of 74 species and 9,815 seedlings germinated out of the seed bank samples. The total seed density does not differ between path zones, but significant differences exist in the depth distribution and composition of the seed bank throughout transects. There is a large discrepancy between the composition of the seed bank and the vegetation. Small seeded species of disturbed environments dominate in each path zone. Typical forest species dominate in the vegetation while their contribution to the seed bank is low. Only with reference to the proportion of species of forest edges and clearings, the seed bank and vegetation do not differ significantly. Similarity between the seed bank on the path centre and the vegetation in the respective path zones decreases towards the undisturbed forest vegetation. Some competitive species like Urtica dioica and Lythrum salicaria are excessively represented in the seed bank and efficiently may obstruct further visitor use. However, these early successional species may not contribute to the conservation values of forests. Therefore management should carefully consider alternative amendments (e.g. soil scarification and seeding) to stimulate vegetation restoration.  相似文献

Riparian vegetation performs important ecosystem functions, since it maintains regional biodiversity and provides a range of environmental services. However, anthropogenic activity, land use type, and edge effects are factors that modify the riparian species assemblage and properties. The present study analyzes the influence of adjacent land use on the structure and diversity of riparian vegetation in four hydrographic regions that form the watershed of the river Duero, in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Using a survey of woody plants of dbh ≥ 2.5 cm in ten different 0.1 ha sites, we found that the average number of stems and individuals was lower under agricultural (AGR) and urban (URB) land use, compared to forested areas (FOR). The proportion of multistemmed plants differs among land uses: this value was greater in AGR than in the FOR and URB categories. This proportion also differed among the four hydrographic regions. The land use type FOR presented the highest alpha and beta diversity, with a high number of native species occurring only in areas defined by this land use. The results indicate that the category FOR plays an important role in the conservation of regional flora and is a possible source of germplasm for restoration programs in sites degraded by human disturbance. This study shows how anthropogenic activities affect riparian vegetation and highlights the importance of further study of this ecosystem to apply sustainable management strategies that are compatible with its conservation.  相似文献

This study quantifies the nationwide land cover and long-term changes in forests and its implications on forest fragmentation in Nepal. The multi-source datasets were used to generate the forest cover information for 1930, 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2014. This study analyzes distribution of land cover, rate of deforestation, changes across forest types, forest canopy density and pattern of fragmentation. The land cover legend for 2014 is consisting of 21 classes: tropical dry deciduous sal forest, tropical moist deciduous sal forest, subtropical broad-leaved forest, subtropical pine forest, lower temperate broad leaved forest, upper temperate broad leaved forest, lower temperate mixed broad leaved forest, upper temperate mixed broad leaved forest, temperate needle leaved forest, subalpine forest, plantations, tropical scrub, subtropical scrub, temperate scrub, alpine scrub, grassland, agriculture, water bodies, barren land and settlements. The forest cover statistics for Nepal obtained in this study shows an area of 76,710 km2 in 1930 which has decreased to 39,392 km2 in 2014. A net loss of 37,318 km2 (48.6%) was observed in last eight decades. Analysis of annual rate of net deforestation for the recent period indicates 0.01% during 2005–2014. An increase in the number of forest patches from 6925 (in 1930) to 42,961 (in 2014) was noticed. The significant observation is 75.5% of reduction in core 3 forest, whereas, patch, perforated and edge classes show the increase in percentage of fragmentation classes from 1930 to 2014. The results of this work will support the understanding of deforestation and its consequences on fragmentation for maintaining and improving the forest resources of Nepal.  相似文献

Pinus pumila (Dall.) Regel, a rare conifer and key species in high latitude and high altitude mountains, has an important role in soil and water conservation. This evergreen shrub grows 3–6 m high in P. pumila – larch (Larix gmelini) open forest at altitudes of 800–1200 m in the Greater Kingan Mountain Range (Daxing’an Mountain). Forest fires are major natural hazards to P. pumila – larch forest. The unique ecological role of this community gives important theoretical and practical significance to research on P. pumila – larch forest restoration after fires. Literature concerning factors influencing early vegetation restoration in burned areas in this habitat is sparse. We studied these factors, especially those related to P. pumila seedling establishment. The results showed fires in P. pumila – larch forest usually resulted in severe burns. Typically almost no P. pumila survived after fires. Nearly all ground fuels were consumed. Second growth after fires exhibited low species richness. The dominant tree/shrub seedlings found after fires were birch (Betula platyphylla) and larch, with small number of P. pumila. Other shrub seedlings found were Ledum palustre, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Betula fruticosa, and Rubus arcticus. The main herb species found were Deyeuxia langsdorffii, and Chamaenerion angustifolium. Important factors influencing early vegetation restoration after fires included seed dispersal, fire size, and site condition. Seed dispersal in birch and larch is higher than in P. pumila; more seedlings of birch and larch were found in burned areas than seedlings of P. pumila. Most seeds germinated in the first year following a fire. The extent of the burned area influences seedling distribution patterns, especially in species with limited seed dispersal ability. Birch and larch seedlings were evenly distributed in the entire burned area, while seedlings of P. pumila were found only at the fire edge. No P. pumila seedlings were found more than 50 m away from seed source trees. Site condition significantly influenced seed germination and growth in birch and larch; these seedlings only grew well in burned areas with good site conditions (shallow slopes, thick soils, etc.). They did not grow well in burned areas with poor site conditions (steep slopes, thin soils, etc.). However, P. pumila seedlings could grow well in burned areas with either good or poor site conditions. The strong vitality of P. pumila seedlings gives this species an enormous ecological advantage in soil conservation and environmental restoration and conservation. We conclude that the main factor influencing seedling establishment in P. pumila is its weak seed dispersal ability. Although the P. pumila seeds can germinate in all burned areas, natural regeneration rarely restores burned areas to the original P. pumila – larch forest. Planting seeds and/or seedlings may facilitate burned area restoration to P. pumila – larch forest. Because P. pumila seedlings grow very slowly, the restoration process may take decades.  相似文献

This paper reports on the results of a transect analysis carried out in order to detect small-scale patterns ofAvenetum species in a limestone grassland on the Great Alvar on the Baltic island of Öland, Sweden. Three transects consisting of 500 10×10 cm quadrats were used. The cover and number of flowering stalks (if any) of the 21 most common species were recorded. In addition the total cover of vascular plants, cover of mosses and lichens, cover of cow dung and soil depth in each quadrat were recorded. Ellenberg indicator values for light, moisture, reaction and nitrogen were calculated for each quadrat as weighted averages of the values for the species included in the analysis. Patch size frequency analysis, PASFRAN, a new method for detecting patches and their sizes, revealed that 42% of all significant species patches detected had mean patch sizes (diameter) in the range of 26–50 cm, which matched the size of dung patches—49 cm in transect 1 and 30 cm in transect 2. Results of association analysis revealed correlations for several species pairs and between species and environmental factors with similar patch sizes. Combination of PASFRAN and association analysis is recommended as an effective method for pattern detection.  相似文献

Hitherto, there are only few studies that have analysed the variation of P contents in individual tree rings to reconstruct fluctuations in soil P availability. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to assess the relationship between changes in P content in tree rings and known changes in soil P availability resulting from fertilization of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in fertilization trials at two different sites. We compared P contents in single tree rings from fertilized and unfertilized plots formed before and after P fertilization and assessed (1) whether fertilization leads to an immediate increase in P uptake and higher P contents in tree rings formed after fertilization, and (2) whether P is translocated to older tree rings that were formed before fertilization. After application of 70 kg P ha−1, a prompt and extended increase in relative wood P contents could be observed in both Norway spruce and Scots pine. However, only at the Norway Spruce site, this increase could be properly assigned to a P fertilization signal in heartwood rings formed after fertilization. In sapwood rings, however, P fertilization signals were masked by the inherent increase in P content from older towards younger sapwood rings, which was at least one order of magnitude higher than the increase from fertilization. We could not observe a P translocation into older tree rings, which existed as sapwood rings at the time of fertilization. This pilot study underlines the potential of dendrochemistry for reconstructing changes in soil P availability and improves the conceptual basis for further dendrochemical research, not only in fertilized but also in unfertilized forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Long-term vegetation changes in permanent plots along two transects from the low to the high salt marsh at the Boschplaat on Terschelling between 1953 and 1990, were analysed in relation to sedimentation and flooding. In both transects, the number of plant species decreased between 1953 and 1990. In lower parts of the two transects the dominant plant species of the vegetation changed from Puccinellia maritima in 1953/54 to Limonium vulgare in 1980 to Atriplex portulacoides in 1990. The increase in A. portulacoides between 1980 and 1990 coincided with an increase in the thickness of the silt layer, caused by a sedimentation rate of about 5 mm per year. This sedimentation led to an increase in elevation but not to large changes in flooding frequency between 1953 and 1990, probably due to a sea level rise during the same period. In the higher parts of the salt-marsh transects Elymus athericus strongly increased and this species became dominant in 1980 and 1990. In these parts of the salt marsh, a small increase in elevation, in thickness of the silt layer, and in flooding frequency occurred between 1953 and 1990.The described changes in vegetation are discussed in terms of general succession of salt-marsh vegetation in relation to flooding and sedimentation.  相似文献

Site-specific temporal trends in algae, benthic invertebrate, and fish assemblages were investigated in 15 streams and rivers draining basins of varying land use in the south-central United States from 1993–2007. A multivariate approach was used to identify sites with statistically significant trends in aquatic assemblages which were then tested for correlations with assemblage metrics and abiotic environmental variables (climate, water quality, streamflow, and physical habitat). Significant temporal trends in one or more of the aquatic assemblages were identified at more than half (eight of 15) of the streams in the study. Assemblage metrics and abiotic environmental variables found to be significantly correlated with aquatic assemblages differed between land use categories. For example, algal assemblages at undeveloped sites were associated with physical habitat, while algal assemblages at more anthropogenically altered sites (agricultural and urban) were associated with nutrient and streamflow metrics. In urban stream sites results indicate that streamflow metrics may act as important controls on water quality conditions, as represented by aquatic assemblage metrics. The site-specific identification of biotic trends and abiotic–biotic relations presented here will provide valuable information that can inform interpretation of continued monitoring data and the design of future studies. In addition, the subsets of abiotic variables identified as potentially important drivers of change in aquatic assemblages provide policy makers and resource managers with information that will assist in the design and implementation of monitoring programs aimed at the protection of aquatic resources.  相似文献

Background

Rates of exclusive breastfeeding in China are relatively low and below national targets. The aim of this study was to document the factors that influence exclusive breastfeeding initiation in Zhejiang, PR China.

Methods

A cohort study of infant feeding practices was undertaken in Zhejiang Province, an eastern coastal region of China. A total of 1520 mothers who delivered in four hospitals located in city, suburb and rural areas during late 2004 to 2005 were enrolled in the study. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors related to exclusive breastfeeding initiation.

Results

On discharge from hospital, 50.3% of the mothers were exclusively breastfeeding their infants out of 96.9% of the mothers who had earlier initiated breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding was positively related to vaginal birth, baby's first feed being breast milk, mother living in the suburbs or rural areas, younger age of mother, lower maternal education level and family income.

Conclusion

The exclusive breastfeeding rate in Zhejiang is only 50.3% on discharge and does not reach Chinese or international targets. A number of behaviours have been identified in the study that could be potentially incorporated into health promotion activities.  相似文献

Human management of livestock and the presence of different breeds have been discussed in archaeozoology and animal breeding. Traditionally osteometrics has been the main tool in addressing these questions. We combine osteometrics with molecular sex identifications of 104 of 340 morphometrically analysed bones in order to investigate the use of cattle at the Eketorp ringfort on the ?land island in Sweden. The fort is dated to 300-1220/50 A.D., revealing three different building phases. In order to investigate specific patterns and shifts through time in the use of cattle the genetic data is evaluated in relation to osteometric patterns and occurrence of pathologies on cattle metapodia. Males were genotyped for a Y-chromosomal SNP in UTY19 that separates the two major haplogroups, Y1 and Y2, in taurine cattle. A subset of the samples were also genotyped for one SNP involved in coat coloration (MC1R), one SNP putatively involved in resistance to cattle plague (TLR4), and one SNP in intron 5 of the IGF-1 gene that has been associated to size and reproduction. The results of the molecular analyses confirm that the skeletal assemblage from Eketorp is dominated by skeletal elements from females, which implies that dairying was important. Pathological lesions on the metapodia were classified into two groups; those associated with the use as draught animals and those lesions without a similar aetiology. The results show that while bulls both exhibit draught related lesions and other types of lesions, cows exhibit other types of lesions. Interestingly, a few elements from females exhibit draught related lesions. We conclude that this reflects the different use of adult female and male cattle.Although we note some variation in the use of cattle at Eketorp between Iron Age and Medieval time we have found little evidence for the use of different types of animals for specific purposes. The use of specific (genetic) breeds seems to be a phenomenon that developed later than the Eketorp settlement.  相似文献

Pollen analysis was carried out on gyttja from the small lake Femtingagölen in the Småland Uplands, southern Sweden. The interpretation of the pollen diagram focused on land-use history and comparisons were made to archaeological and historical information from the area. An absolute chronology, based on AMS dates from terrestrial plant macrofossils, was complemented by inferred dates. The pollen analytical data suggest interference with the woodland cover from ca. 1700 B.C. onwards. Intensified grazing and forest clearances resulted in semi-open pastures between ca. A.D. 400–600 which was followed by forest regeneration (chronology based on AMS 14C dates and cross-correlation with other well dated profiles). The landscape became more open again between A.D. 800 and 1400. Animal husbandry was complemented by small-scale shifting cultivation during the Iron Age. Permanent arable fields were probably not introduced until the Late Iron Age or the Middle Ages. Hordeum and Triticum were grown during the Iron Age, Hordeum, Triticum, Secale and Cannabis sativa during the Middle Ages and early Modern time, and Hordeum and Avena in the recent past. Sandy and silty soils, where stone clearance was not necessary, have probably been used for cereal growing in prehistoric and historic time.  相似文献

The effect of different grazing regimes on pasture vegetation was studied during the intensive grazing of heifers in the Jizerské hory mountains during 1993–1997. The vegetation was monitored in 3 pairs of permanent 1×1 m plots using a continuous grid of nine 0.33 × 0.33 m subplots. We applied continuous stocking and rotational grazing. Vegetation varied as a result of time and differences between treatments. Several prostrate dicotyledonous species (Trifolium repens, Taraxacum sp.,Bellis perennis andLeontodon autumnalis) increased under continuous stocking. This treatment also promoted the growth of the perennial grassLolium perenne, which was able to cope with frequent defoliation. Tall grasses sensitive to frequent defoliation (Poa trivialis, Holcus mollis, Alopecurus pratensis, Dactylis glomerata andElytrigia repens) were more abundant in rotationally grazed paddocks. Species diversity was not significantly influenced by the different grazing systems. The decrease in the potential sward height under continuous stocking revealed the replacing of tall dominants by lower species. Our results indicate that different grazing systems alter the composition and structure of grassland vegetation. Defining the intensity of grazing under continuous stocking or rotational grazing is complex due to the different stocking rates and the heights of sward during a grazing season. Information about pasture management should therefore involve not only grazing intensity but also the grazing system used.  相似文献

The Atlantic forest is one of the most diverse biomes on Earth but human activities are transforming this ecosystem into one of the most endangered. Most remnant old-growth rainforest is embedded within a mosaic of regenerating forest, tree plantations, pastures, and agricultural production. This has left a large percentage of the region’s endemic species threatened with extinction. Butterflies are considered as sensitive indicators of ecological conditions, especially in the Atlantic forest. This community can provide a window into animal response to restoration and how recovering habitats are used by native animal communities. The primary goal of this paper was to determine if butterfly communities respond to measures of structural recovery in naturally regenerating and re-forested pastures, and if this response increases the similarity of recovering butterfly communities relative to those of intact forests. Butterfly communities were sampled using two sampling methodologies, passive bait trapping and timed meander counts. These data sets were combined and correlated to assessment of habitat structure. We found that butterfly communities respond rapidly to structural changes in habitats as forest structure recovers on abandoned and restored pastures. While many species of mature forest inhabiting butterflies use regenerating forests as habitat, our young forests also retained an almost intact community of ruderal pasture inhabiting butterflies as well, indicating that these habitats retain many features of highly disturbed pastures. We suggest that measures of beta-diversity, which can be used to assess convergence in community structure, are far superior to the alpha-diversity measures that are typically used for assessing restoration recovery.  相似文献
