The troglobitic amphipod crustacean Crangonyx antennatus occupies mud-bottom pools and small, gravel-bottom streams in caves in the southern Appalachians. One large, mud-bottom pool
population in Lee Co., Virginia was observed periodically from 1967 to 1975. Amphipods in this population frequently burrowed
into the soft mud substrate, where they were able to survive desiccation during periods when the pool dried up. Animals kept
in the laboratory also burrowed and survived desiccation during an experiment which simulated drought conditions similar to
those observed in caves. Amphipods collected from both pool and stream habitats burrowed, thereby indicating that stream-adapted
populations of this species still retain sufficient flexibility to survive under variable environmental conditions that might
be encountered in nature. It is concluded that burrowing provides a means of survival for C. antennatus when it is sometimes exposed to drought conditions in cave pool habitats and also provides protection from potential terrestrial
predators under similar conditions. Burrowing also offers amphipods protection from aquatic predators (such as salamander
larvae) during normal water levels and possibly allows juveniles a means of escaping cannibalism by adults. 相似文献

The respiration of plankton of two polyhumic lakes was measured as production of carbon dioxide in dark bottles. The method proved to be enough sensitive for use in oligotrophic lakes with low alkalinity. The respiration of plankton followed broadly changes in temperature. However, the primary production of phytoplankton was probably the main factor governing the seasonal pattern of respiration. During summer the respiration of plankton was more than three times higher than the primary production of phytoplankton. This suggests that allochthonous humic substances are an important source of carbon and energy for organisms of polyhumic lakes. 相似文献

Species composition, quantity and distribution of diatoms in both the plankton and the surface sediments (0–30 cm) of mesotrophic Lake Krasnoye and eutrophic Lake Vishnevskoye (Karelian Isthmus) were studied. In the mesotrophic lake the composition of dominant diatoms (mainly Melosira) corresponded to those in the plankton. The Araphidineae/Centrales (A/C) ratio was 0.2–0.3%, increasing in the upper layers to 7%. Alkaliphilous and alkalibiontic forms constituted 60% of the total. In the eutrophic lake diatoms with thin valves (mainly Synedra) predominated in the plankton but their quantity in the sediments was insignificant in comparison with other plankton. Nevertheless, the A/C ratio was much higher, 17–35%. Alkaliphilous and alkalibiontic forms accounted for 78–90% of the total number of valves. In both lakes the highest number of diatom valves was registered in the upper layer of the sediments. From the ratio of the total number of diatoms in the upper 5 cm layer to their annual flux to the sediment from the plankton the approximate sediment accumulation rate was calculated to be 1.9 mm a?1 for the mesotrophic lake and 2.5 mm a?1 for the eutrophic one. 相似文献

Role of sediment and internal loading of phosphorus in shallow lakes 总被引:51,自引:13,他引:51
Current velocity is a pervasive feature of lotic systems, yet this defining environmental variable is rarely examined as a factor for regulating stream herbivory. To investigate how current modifies herbivory in the upper Colorado River, U.S.A., loops of electrified fencing wire were used to reduce in situ grazer densities on 30 × 30 cm tile substrates. After 45 d, electrified tiles had significantly fewer grazers (P = 0.03) and >2X more algal biomass than controls (P = 0.0002). Reduced grazing on electrified tiles yielded periphytic assemblages having more diatoms and chlorophytes, as well as greater algal species richness. Current velocity effects alone did not significantly regulate algal abundance; however, the interaction between current velocity and grazer exclusion resulted in more algae in slow vs. fast current (P = 0.02). Grazer abundances were similar between fast and slow current velocities, suggesting that grazers in the Colorado River differ in their ability to regulate algae across the current velocity gradient. Our results indicate that stream current-mediated herbivory in streams may be more important than is generally recognized. 相似文献

Submerged macrophyte vegetation in two shallow lakes in the Netherlands, Lake Veluwemeer and Lake Wolderwijd, has been affected by eutrophication in the late 1960's and 1970's. Recent changes in the vegetation occurred in the period following lake restoration measures. Between 1987 and 1993, the dominance of Potamogeton pectinatus decreased, while Charophyte meadows expanded over the same time interval. The pattern of change of the dominant macrophyte species might result from changes in the underwater light climate. Seasonally persistent clear water patches associated with the Chara meadows have been observed in the last few years. The interaction between submerged macrophyte vegetation succession and water transparency in the lakes is discussed. 相似文献

We conducted a 1-year survey in two humic shallow lakes from the floodplain of the Lower Paraná River, Laguna Grande Lake (LGL) and a relictual oxbow lake (ROL). We aimed to test two hypotheses: (1) the efficiency in light use of picoplankton (0.2–3 μm) is greater as light restriction increases and (2) the contribution of picoplankton to the total productivity is higher when the total photosynthetic biomass is lower. We performed P–E curves for picoplankton and nano- and microplankton (>3 μm) using the 14C assimilation technique. The light environments of the water bodies differed mainly owing to the development of free floating plants on the surface of the ROL and the dominance of phytoplankton in LGL. Primary productivity patterns in LGL were seasonality driven whilst in the ROL they were related to the coverage of floating macrophytes, which promoted light limitation and a lower productivity. In LGL, nano- and microplankton were in general more productive and the relative contribution of picoplankton to the total phytoplankton production decreased with the increase in total photosynthetic biomass. Hence, our study extends previously observed patterns to subtropical shallow lakes, where seasonality and free floating plants may influence the dynamics of phytoplankton production. 相似文献

The shallow Andean North Patagonian lakes are suitable environments for the evaluation of autotrophic and heterotrophic production
under a scenario of high radiation in high dissolved organic matter (DOM) systems. We aimed to study the balance between primary
and bacterial production in three shallow Andean lakes, in a summer sampling (high irradiance condition). Our hypothesis is
that two factors would interact: high light and high DOM, affecting bacteria and algae. We carried out experiments of bacterial
production (BP) by measuring [14C]-l-leucine incorporation and PP by 14C uptake in two fractions: picophytoplankton and phytoplankton >2 μm. Cell abundance, chlorophyll a, nutrients, DOM, light, and temperature were also measured. The contribution of picophytoplankton to total primary production
(PP) was, in general, very high exceeding 50%. Picophytoplankton was photosynthetically more efficient than the larger autotrophs
in all lakes. We observed a decrease in PP at surface levels due the high solar irradiances, while BP was not affected. Changes
in the PP:BP ratios were observed in relation to DOM content and light effect. Our data indicate that the amount of available
DOM drives the balance between PP and BP. However, solar radiation should be included as an important factor since PP:BP ratio
may decrease because of PP photoinhibition. 相似文献

Cladoceran and rotifer grazing on bacteria and phytoplankton in two shallow eutrophic lakes: in situ measurement with fluorescent microspheres 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Metazooplankton grazing on bacteria and on the phytoplanktonof various sizes was estimated in shallow eutrophic lakes Kaiavereand Võrtsjärv (Estonia) by in situ feeding experimentswith fluorescent microspheres (diameters 0.5 µm for bacteriaand 3, 6 and 24 µm for phytoplankton). Zooplankton communitycomposition, abundance and food density were important factorsdetermining grazing rates in these lakes. Cladocerans and rotifersfiltering rates (FR) and ingestion rates (IR) on bacteria andphytoplankton were several times higher in Lake Kaiavere wherebacterivorous rotifers and Daphnia contributed more to zooplanktonassemblage. While cladocerans were generally the main phytoplanktonconsumers, both lakes differed with respect to the groups ofbacterivores. Based on consumption of fluorescent microspheres, the metazooplankton grazing rates were relatively low and hadlow impact on production and standing stock of bacteria andingestible phytoplankton (<30 µm). On average, 0.5and 0.1% of standing stock of bacteria and 2.6 and 1.0% of standingstock of ingestible phytoplankton was grazed daily by metazooplanktonin lakes Kaiavere and Võrtsjärv, respectively. Thatcorresponded to daily grazing of 4.1% of the bacterial productionand 0.43% of the total primary production (PP) by metazooplanktonin Lake Kaiavere compared with 4.3 and 0.06% in Lake Võrtsjärv,respectively. The results suggest that the majority of consumptionof the bacterial and phytoplankton PP is most likely channelledthrough the microbial loop. 相似文献

The lakes under study can be classified as eutrophic-hypertrophic waterbodies according to the level of primary production. High concentrations of suspended matter (up to 7326 g/m3) and total phosphorus (up to 5625 mg/m3) were registered in the lakes. The values of the primary production of plankton and the destruction of organic matter do not depend on the absolute concentration of salts in water. Unlike the destruction of organic matter, the primary production of plankton is higher in winter than in summer. Thus, the accumulation of organic matter in saline lakes occurs mainly in winter. The negative relationship between the primary production of plankton and the biomass of the filter feeder Artemia sp. has been determined. 相似文献

Nutrient balances and phytoplankton dynamics in two agriculturally loaded shallow lakes 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The impact of agriculture was estimated on two shallow, eutrophic lakes, Lake Kotojärvi and Lake Villikkalanjärvi in southern Finland. The main emphasis was on phosphorus and nitrogen budgets and on the phytoplankton dynamics. Special attention was paid to internal P loading and blue-green algal blooms. The mean Tot-P load from agricultural land was 1.2 kg ha-1 a-1 in both basins and Tot-N loads were 19 kg ha-1 a-1 in L. Villikkalanjärvi and 12 kg ha-1 a-1 in L. Kotojärvi. The Tot-P input to L. Kotojärvi was on an average 0.62 g m-2 a-1 (per lake surface area), and the Tot-N input 9.1 g m-2 a-1. The corresponding inputs to L. Villikkalanjärvi were 3.1 and 57 g m-2 a-1, respectively. The annual variation followed the runoff volumes. About half of the Tot-P and one third of the Tot-N load was retained in L. Kotojärvi. In L. Villikkalanjärvi the retention was only 24% for Tot-P and 19% for Tot-N. The difference was very probably due to a longer theoretical retention time in L. Kotojärvi. In L. Villikkalanjärvi the mean concentration of Tot-P was 120 µg 1-1 and that of Tot-N 1700 µg 1-1 and the corresponding figures in L. Kotojärvi 67 and 990 µg 1-1, respectively. The mean chlorophyll a concentration was, however, higher in L. Kotojärvi (26 µg 1-1) than in L. Villikkalanjärvi (20 µg 1-1). This was probably due to an internal P load in L. Kotojärvi: in 1988 the internal load of dissolved P was estimated to be as much as twofold the external load. In L. Villikkalanjärvi the internal dissolved P load was only up to 50% of the external input. In L. Kotojärvi the high internal P load coupled with a low DIN:DIP ratio resulted in a strong blue-green algal bloom in the summer of 1988. In L. Villikkalanjärvi blue-green algae were observed only in small amounts. Even in August 1990, when the DIN:DIP ratio was low enough to favor the occurrence of blue-green algae, they contributed only up to 10–15% of the total phytoplankton biomass. 相似文献

The Rosu, Puiu and Porcu lakes from the Danube Delta are lacustrine ecosystems characterized by a particularly great variation of the biotic and abiotic factors. This variation causes the development of a zooplankton reduced from the point of view of number and biomass, but rich from the taxonomic point of view. Its monthly and annual fluctuations can hardly be correlated to the rest of the plankton fauna and microflora. Rotifer production is low, turnover at the level of plankton rotifers being relatively uniform and dependent on water temperature. 相似文献

The role of zoobenthos in energy flow in two shallow lakes 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Net production of zoobenthos in two shallow and eutrophic lakes, i.e. the S-basin of Mývatn, Iceland (maximum depth 4.2 m, mean depth 2.3 m) and Hjarbæk Fjord, Denmark (maximum depth 6.5 m, mean depth 1.9 m) were calculated as 878 and 1093 kJ m-2 yr-1, respectively. The zoobenthos in both lakes was dominated by Chironomidae (Diptera) living partly as filtrators feeding on suspended particles (phytoplankton) and partly as surface feeders foraging on benthic algae and/or seston. Respiration and consumption were estimated from the literature. Net production efficiency averaged 0.41 and 0.48 in Hjarbæk Fjord and Mývatn, respectively. Ingestion was dominated by herbivorous chironomids, while detritivorous tubificids were insignificant. Zoobenthic production made up 86% of total secondary production (zooplankton plus zoobenthos) in both lakes. The trophic efficiency between net primary production and benthic net secondary production was 8% and 11% in Hjarbæk Fjord and Lake Mývatn S-basin, respectively. 相似文献

1. Periods with clear water and abundant submerged vegetation have alternated with periods of turbid water and sparse vegetation during recent decades in Lake Tåkern and Lake Krankesjön, two shallow, calcium-rich, moderately eutrophic lakes in southern Sweden, Between 1983 and 1991, submerged vegetation (predominant species: Chara tomentosa, Nitellopsis obtusa, Myriophyllum spicatum) covered about 50% of the open lake area in Lake Tåkern. In Lake Krankesjön, submerged vegetation was sparse during 1983–84, but increased continuously in the following years and covered about 50% of the open lake area by 1990 and 1991. Potamogeton pectinatus was the first species to expand in Lake Krankesjön, but was later replaced by C. tomentosa. 2. During 1983–84, turbidity was high in Lake Krankesjön, which indicated that submerged macrophytes were light-limited. During 1986–91, there was a negative correlation between the areal coverage of charophytes and angiosperms, indicating that competition for space had become an important limiting factor. The same negative correlation was found in Lake Tåkern for 1983–91. 3. Charophytes had much higher biomass per unit area than angiosperms in both lakes and reduced water movement considerably. This was probably one reason for the increase of water transparency in Lake Krankesjön during the spatial expansion of these plants. Charophytes also stored large amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen, Charophytes are probably superior competitors for both space and nutrients and thus have competitive advantage over angiosperms in this lake type. 4. In Lake Krankesjön, both P. pectinatus and C. tomentosa were negatively affected by high water level during the growing period. Total disappearance of submerged vegetation occurred in both lakes after catastrophic events (dry-out during summer or mechanical damage by ice) caused by extremely low water level. Changes in water level are thus one of the most important reasons for among-year fluctuations in areal coverage of submerged macrophytes in these lakes. 相似文献

Photosynthesis and microbial plankton dynamics of two lakes in the Kongsfjorden catchment of Spitzbergen (Svalbard Archipelago, 78°N) were investigated during the summer of 2000. One of the lakes (Tvillingvatnet) served as the water supply for the village of Ny Ålesund. The other was a deeper, larger unnamed lake in the Ossian Sarsfjella reserve—named Lake OS in this study. Both lakes can be classified as oligotrophic on the basis of chlorophyll a and inorganic nutrient concentrations. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged between 0.33 and 1.65 µg l -1 in Tvillingvatnet and 0.2 and 0.3 µg l -1 in Lake OS. The phytoplankton was dominated by chrysophytes and cryptophytes, with the diatom Rhizosolenia and a number of dinoflagellate species. Rates of photosynthesis were typically low, between 24.5 µg and 1.0 mg l -1 day -1 in Tvillingvatnet (photosynthetic efficiency 0.004–0.26), and between 3.1 and 29.5 µg l -1 day –1 in Lake OS (photosynthetic efficiency 0.0019–0.0085). Among the phytoflagellates (PNAN) there were a number of mixotrophs which reached their peaks of abundance before other PNAN. Mixotrophy appeared to provide a competitive advantage. Grazing rates for the mixotroph Dinobryon ranged between 0.063 and 1.12 pg C cell -1 day -1 in Lake OS and between 0.22 and 1.11 pg cell -1 day -1 in Tvillingvatnet, with rates increasing between July and August. However, Dinobryon removed less than 1% of bacterial biomass day -1, while the heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN) removed up to 28% of bacterial biomass day -1. Bacterial concentrations were low, with a maximum of 28.8×10 8 l -1 in Tvillingvatnet and 23.6×10 8 l -1 in Lake OS. Ciliated protozoan and rotifer diversity in the plankton was low. 相似文献

- 1 Lake Tåkern and Lake Krankesjön, two moderately eutrophic, shallow lakes in southern Sweden, have during the past few decades shifted several times between a clear-water state with abundant submerged vegetation and a turbid state with high phytoplankton densities.
- 2 Between 1985 and 1991, Lake Takern was in a clear state, whereas Lake Krankesjon shifted from a turbid to a clear state. During this shift, the area covered by submerged macrophytes expanded, followed by an increase in water transparency, plant-associated macroinvertebrates, and piscivorous fish. Nutrient concentrations, phytoplankton biomass and abundance of planktonic cladocerans decreased.
- 3 In both lakes, water level fluctuations were the most common factor causing shifts, affecting submerged macrophytes either through changes in light availability or through catastrophic events such as dry-out or mechanical damage by ice movement.
- 4 Our data give further support for the existence of two alternative stable states in shallow lakes maintained by self-stabilizing feedback mechanisms.

Viruses in the plankton of freshwater and saline Antarctic lakes 总被引:7,自引:1,他引:7
1. Virus‐like particle (VLP) abundances in nine freshwater to saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Eastern Antarctica (68° S) were determined in December 1999. In the ultra‐oligotrophic to oligotrophic freshwater lakes, VLP abundances ranged from 1.01 to 3.28 × 106 mL–1 in the top 6 m of the water column. In the saline lakes the range was between 6.76 and 36.5 × 106 mL–1. The lowest value was found in meromictic Ace Lake and the highest value in hypersaline Lake Williams. Virus to bacteria ratios (VBR) were lowest in the freshwater lakes and highest in the saline lakes, with a maximum of 23.4 in the former and 50.3 in the latter. 2. A range of morphologies among VLP was observed, including phages with short (Podoviridae) and long tails, icosahedric viruses of up to 300 nm and star‐like particles of about 80 nm diameter. 3. In these microbially dominated ecosystems there was no correlation between VLP and either bacterial numbers or chlorophyll a. There was a significant correlation between VLP abundances and dissolved organic carbon concentration (r=0.845, P < 0.01). 4. The data suggested that viruses probably attack a spectrum of bacteria and protozoan species. Virus‐like particle numbers in the freshwater lakes were lower than values reported for lower latitude systems. Those in the saline lakes were comparable with abundances reported from other Antarctic lakes, and were higher than most values published for lower latitude lakes and many marine systems. Across the salinity spectrum from freshwater through brackish to hypersaline, VLP concentrations increased roughly in relation to increasing trophy. 5. Given that Antarctic lakes have a plankton almost entirely made up of bacteria and protists, and that VLP abundances are high, it is likely that viruses play a pivotal role in carbon cycling in these extreme ecosystems. 相似文献

Zooplankton, phytoplankton and the microbial food web in two turbid and two clearwater shallow lakes in Belgium 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Components of the pelagic food web in four eutrophic shallow lakes in two wetland reserves in Belgium (Blankaart and De Maten) were monitored during the course of 1998–1999. In each wetland reserve, a clearwater and a turbid lake were sampled. The two lakes in each wetland reserve had similar nutrient loadings and occurred in close proximity of each other. In accordance with the alternative stable states theory, food web structure differed strongly between the clearwater and turbid lakes. Phytoplankton biomass was higher in the turbid than the clearwater lakes. Whereas chlorophytes dominated the phytoplankton in the turbid lakes, cryptophytes were the most important phytoplankton group in the clearwater lakes. The biomass of microheterotrophs (bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliates) was higher in the turbid than the clearwater lakes. Biomass and community composition of micro- and macrozooplankton was not clearly related to water clarity. The ratio of macrozooplankton to phytoplankton biomass – an indicator of zooplankton grazing pressure on phytoplankton – was higher in the clearwater when compared to the turbid lakes. The factors potentially regulating water clarity, phytoplankton, microheterotrophs and macrozooplankton are discussed. Implications for the management of these lakes are discussed. 相似文献
