We tested four chimpanzees in a self-control task in which food rewards accumulated as long as they were not eaten. In one condition, the chimpanzees had to perform a computer task that directly led to the delivery of the food rewards. In another condition, working on the computerized task was not required and any such work was not linked to the delivery of rewards. The third condition offered no computerized task (chimpanzees simply waited for food rewards to be delivered). Three of four chimpanzees showed no effect of the work scenario on delay of gratification. The one chimpanzee that showed an influence of work scenario on self-control was the overall poorest performing animal. This animal delayed gratification the longest, however, when work was required and reward delivery was directly linked to that work. Therefore, although there is little evidence linking delay of gratification to work requirements in chimpanzees, chimpanzees with lower overall self-control might benefit from having some work available if reward accumulation is contingent on performing that work.  相似文献

Do chimpanzees tailor their communication in accordance with the attentional status of a human observer? We presented 57 chimpanzees with three experimental conditions in randomized order: an experimenter offered a banana to the focal subject (Focal), to a cagemate of the focal subject (In-Cage) and to a chimpanzee in an adjacent cage (Adjacent) while a second experimenter recorded the first and second responses of the focal subject in all three conditions. The chimpanzees' behaviour was mostly visual or bimodal in the Focal condition, changing to auditory behaviour or disengagement in the In-Cage and Adjacent conditions. Thus, with no explicit training and on their first trials in all instances, the chimpanzees tactically deployed their communicative behaviours in the visual and auditory domains in accordance with the manipulated attentional and intentional status of a human observer.  相似文献

The sexual differences of the skull of Pan troglodytes have been established on 342 classic and vestibular measures taken on 19 male and 23 female skull. The Students' t test has revealed 98 significant parameters with a reliability of 99%. They indicate a greater importance of the nasofrontal zone and of the facial mass in the male. On the other hand the most significant widths are situated in the retro-vestibular zone.  相似文献

With a free-choice task, visual preference was estimated in five adult chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). The subjects were presented with digitized color photographs of various species of primates on a CRT screen. Their touching responses to the photographs were reinforced by food reward irrespective of which photographs they touched. The results revealed that all chimpanzees touched the photographs of humans significantly more than any other species, or phylogenetic families of primates. This tendency was consistent across different stimulus sets. The results suggest that the chimpanzees showed visual preference for the photographs of humans over those of their own species. The results also suggest that the degree of this visual preference was not in accordance with phylogenetic distance from the subjects' species, chimpanzees. The preference for humans was stronger in the case of the colored photographs than in monochromatic ones. All of the five chimpanzees had been in captivity for at least 16 years. They were reared by humans from just after their birth, or at least from 1.5 years old. Their preference might have developed through social experience, especially that during infanthood. Object-permanence was studied with one chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and two New World monkeys (Lagothrica flavicauda and Cebus capucinus). The chimpanzee and the capucinus attained stage VI, while Lagothrica reached stage Va. The data show that tests of object-permanence are suitable for comparison among species. This study also attempts to propose an experimental scheme that could allow for a more valid comparison among species. Use of an operant conditioning procedure is suggested and discussed.  相似文献

Brain shape asymmetries or petalias consist of the extension of one cerebral hemisphere beyond the other. A larger frontal or caudal projection is usually coupled with a larger lateral extent of the more projecting hemisphere relative to the other. The concurrence of these petalial components is characteristic of hominins. Studies aimed at quantifying petalial asymmetries in human and great ape endocasts rely on the definition of the midline of the endocranial surface. Studies of brain material show that, at least in humans, most of the medial surface of the left occipital lobe distorts along the midline and protrudes on to the right side, making it difficult for midline and corresponding left and right reference point identification. In order to accurately quantify and compare brain shape asymmetries in extant hominid species, we propose here a new protocol based on the objective definition of cranial landmarks. We describe and quantify for the first time in three dimensions the positions of frontal and occipital protrusions in large samples of Pan paniscus, Pan troglodytes and Gorilla gorilla. This study confirms the existence of frontal and occipital petalias in African apes. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the 3D structure of these petalias reveals shared features, as well as features that are unique to the different great ape species.  相似文献

Innovations of behavior have major implications for the concept of culture in animals. Innovation has rarefy been documented in wild animal populations. The chimpanzees of the Ta? National Park, C?te d’Ivoire, spontaneously included new patterns of behavior in their repertoire during our study. Some innovations were incorporated into a minority of the group members’ repertoire, whereas others, such as building day nests in trees and on the ground more frequently, became general behaviors. Similarly, new contexts for use of leaf- clipping behavior and novel ways of feeding on some leaves appeared and rapidly became part of the behavior of most group members. The environmental parameters were too stable to explain these new forms of behavior, as most of them took place within 1 month during the same dry season. In a similar way, leaf- grooming acquired a new function in Gombe chimpanzees. A process similar to social conventions could explain the emergence of these new functions for an existing behavior in a way rather similar to human “fashion. ” Three major characteristics of human culture — the absence of individual variations in the performance of the behavior, the general use of the behavior by group members, and the ability to modify the function of a behavior — characterize leaf-clipping in Ta? chimpanzees and leaf- grooming in Gombe chimpanzees.  相似文献

An adult female chimpanzee showed responding through use of exclusion in an auditory to visual matching-to-sample procedure. The chimpanzee had previously learned to associate specific visuographic symbols called lexigrams with real world referents and the spoken English words and photographs for those referents. On some trials, an unknown spoken English word was presented as the sample, and the match choices could consist of photographs or lexigrams that already were associated with known English words as well as unknown lexigrams or photos of objects without associated lexigrams. The chimpanzee reliably avoided choosing known comparisons for these unknown samples, instead relying on exclusion to choose comparisons that were of unknown lexigrams or photographs of items without associated lexigram symbols.  相似文献

The olfactory signals used by goldfish for sexual and aggressive communication have been studied extensively, but little work has addressed the role of other sensory modalities in social communication in this species. We therefore investigated the role that visual stimuli play in sex discrimination and the ability of androgens, which masculinize courtship behavior, to affect behavioral responses toward female visual stimuli. We found that males selectively orient toward female visual stimuli during the breeding season but not outside it, whereas prostaglandin F2-alpha (PGF2alpha)-injected females do not differentially approach male and female visual stimuli, even during the breeding season. Implanting adult females with testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (KT), however, induced orientation responses toward female visual stimuli similar to those observed in males. These results indicate that visual sexual stimuli are likely important for reproductive signaling in goldfish, potentially helping males identify ovulating females from a distance in a shoal of fish, and that androgens can influence mechanisms associated with orientation responses toward such stimuli.  相似文献

An adolescent female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) was trained to discriminate auditory compound stimuli differing in tonal frequency and/or tone on-off rate. Following acquisition training and overtraining, she was shifted to multidimensional stimulus control testing using redundant relevant auditory stimulus sets with discriminability of elements in each dimension varied systematically. Although the control by both dimensions changed significantly as a function of discriminability, the degree of dimensional control was stronger in the tone on-off rate than in the tonal frequency. These results clearly demonstrated “attentional” control of the chimpanzee's auditory discrimination behavior and the interaction between two dimensions of auditory stimuli.
