This study evaluated the effect of inter-tree variation in the bud phenology of Picea glehnii on susceptibility to the shoot-boring sawfly. Pleroneura piceae , and found that individual susceptibility fluctuates from year to year. The mechanism for the fluctuation between 1994 and 1997 is discussed.
Inter-tree difference in the time of bud swelling is probably genetically based, since most of the trees that began to swell early in 1995 also swelled early in 1997, and those that began to swell late also did so in both years. Damage severity of each tree was evaluated by damage ratio: proportion of the number of damaged current shoots on the previous year's leader shoot. The rank of the bud swelling phenology of a tree was positively correlated to the rank of the damage ratio. This means that genetically based differences in phenology could explain why some trees are subjected to higher levels of herbivory than others.
There was year-to-year variation in the damage severity for each tree. Nevertheless, no significant differences were found in the rank of the damage ratio between years. However the standard deviation of the damage ratios of each tree was highest for trees of intermediate rank. The skew of the frequency distribution of damage ratio was negatively correlated to the cumulated daily mean temperature in spring, which means that the spruce is more susceptible to the sawfly in warm springs than in cool springs.
The mean growth rate of the lightly damaged trees increased constantly, while that of the heavily damaged trees seemed to reach a limit and then became lower than that of the lightly damaged trees.  相似文献

Studies in 1963–65 of the phytotoxic effects, on leaves, flowers and yields of blackcurrants, of sprays containing sulphur, particularly lime sulphur, showed that there was considerable variation in degree of effect between years and between experiments in the same year. It was difficult to damage flowers except at low temperatures, but if fruit set was affected then yield was depressed. Leaf scorching has to be very severe before yields are depressed. There was no evidence from preliminary experiments that sprays of seaweed extract reduced sulphur shock if used up to 3 days before lime sulphur application. The growth rate of shoots was reduced by 1/4–4% lime sulphur for short periods, dependent on concentration, but total bud numbers, flower/ vegetative bud ratios and yield were unaffected. It was found that no adverse effects of lime sulphur were carried over into the following year.  相似文献

After applying disbudding treatments, removal of fifty percent of flower bud each year improves dry matter accumulation in fruiting and non-fruiting branches of pistachio trees, which could minimize alternate bearing.

Abstract

Dry matter accumulation and distribution within branches of pistachio trees were investigated during 2005-2008 to determine the effects of fruiting on shoot growth under rain-fed conditions in arid climate. Four treatments were applied: T 0 normal alternation cycle, T 1 trees disbudded for 1 year, T 2 trees disbudded for two successive years, and T 3 removal of 50 % of all floral buds for each year. Consecutive disbudded treatment (T 2) allowed a higher growth potential of pistachio trees with reference to normal biennial cycle (T 0). Individual current shoot of T 2 accumulated 44 % as much dry matter cm?1 as those of ‘On’ trees, which have the highest yield. Removal of 50 % of floral buds (T 3) significantly increased the dry matter accumulation in fruiting branch to reach 57 g in postharvest compared to 42.6 g for the control T 0. Trees disbudded for 2 years (T 2) had increased dry matter accumulation in the non-fruiting branch from 3.3 to 16.3 g. Leaves, current shoot, 1-year-old wood and inflorescence buds represented, respectively, 87, 5.3, 5 and 2.7 % of the total dry matter of individual branch of T 2. In fruiting branches, nuts consisted of 83–87 %, leaves 7–10 %, rachises 4 %, 1-year-old wood 1.6–2 % and current shoot 0.8–1.3 % of the total dry matter. One-year-old wood played a major role as sources and sinks for developing current year shoot, leaves, inflorescence buds and nuts. Removal of 50 % of flower bud (T 3) improves the dry matter accumulation in fruiting and non-fruiting branches. Thus, under rain-fed conditions, annual pruning could be used to minimize alternate bearing of pistachio.  相似文献

The balsam twig aphid, Mindarus abietinus Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae), is a major insect pest of balsam and Fraser fir grown for Christmas trees. Our objectives in this study were to 1) monitor the phenology of A. abietinus in fir plantations; 2) assess relationships among M. abietinus density, tree phenology, and damage to tree foliage; and 3) develop an esthetic injury level for M. abietinus on Christmas trees. We monitored phenology of M. abietinus and fir trees on three commercial Christmas tree plantations in central and northern Lower Michigan for 3 yr (1999-2001). Phenology of M. abietinus fundatrices and sexuparae was strongly correlated with accumulated degree-days (DD) base 10 degrees C. Fundatrices matured by approximately 83 DD(10 degrees C) and sexuparae were first observed at approximately 83-111 DD(10 degrees C). Trees that broke bud approximately 1 wk later than other trees in the same field escaped M. abietinus damage and shoot expansion rate in spring was generally positively correlated with M. abietinus damage. Retail customers surveyed at a choose-and-cut Christmas plantation in 2 yr did not consistently differentiate between similarly sized trees with no, light, and moderate M. abietinus damage, but heavy damage (>50% damaged shoots) did affect customer perception. Similarly, when wholesale grades were assigned, the high quality Grade 1 trees had up to 40% shoot damage, whereas Grade 2 trees had 32-62% shoot damage. Two trees ranked as unsaleable had sparse canopies and distorted needles on 42% to almost 100% of the shoots.  相似文献

Abstract
  • 1 It is widely known that many bark and wood‐boring beetle species use nonresistant coarse woody debris (CWD) created by disturbances; however, the ability of these secondary species to cause mortality in healthy trees following a build‐up of their populations remains unclear. We characterized the pattern of colonization by Ips pini (Say) following a major ice storm that created large amounts of CWD varying in resistance to colonization (i.e. ranging from snapped tops with no resistance to heavily damaged trees with intact root systems). A major question was how the beetles responded to the different types of storm‐damaged material and whether healthy undamaged trees were colonized and killed following increases in beetle populations.
  • 2 Six red pine, Pinus resinosa Ait., plantations in eastern Ontario were monitored from 1998 to 2001 inclusive: three with high storm damage (approximately 120 m3/ha CWD) and three with minimal damage (approximately 20 m3/ha CWD). Transects (200 × 2 m) were sampled yearly in each plantation to assess the type and amount of damaged pine brood material colonized by the pine engraver beetle, I. pini.
  • 3 Beetles preferentially infested the most nonresistant material available each year (i.e. all snapped tops in year 1, all standing snags, up‐rooted trees and many bent trees by year 2, but still less than 50% of trees blown over but with intact root systems by year 3). By years 3 and 4, the majority (approximately 75%) of severely damaged trees (with > 50% crown loss) died prior to beetle colonization.
  • 4 The size of the beetle population tracked the abundance of available woody material from year‐to‐year within a plantation; populations were very large in the first 2 years, and declined significantly in the last 2 years.
  • 5 Healthy standing red pines were apparently resistant to colonization by the beetles, despite the significant build‐up in their populations. Hence, the results of the present study suggest that native bark beetle populations will not cause further tree mortality following such a disturbance in this region.

Pratt , Charlotte , John Einset , and Mohammad Zahur . (N. Y. S. Agric. Expt. Sta., Geneva.) Radiation damage in apple shoot apices. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(7): 537–544. Illus. 1959.—Pattern of shoot growth and anatomy of the shoot apex of ‘Golden Delicious’ apple trees on ‘East Malling IX’ rootstock are compared in normal trees and those growing under chronic gamma irradiation (average doses of 17–48 r per 20-hr. day) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Bud damage in 6 varieties of apple trees is compared. Irradiated ‘Golden Delicious’ formed lateral buds on the current year's shoot, but the following year these buds grew into spurs which failed to form a terminal bud (“budless” spurs) and enlarged to form “club tips” and “swollen spurs” in this and subsequent years. Cells with thick walls and lightly stained cytoplasm occurred in shoot apices of irradiated lateral buds in mid-June. The first tunica layer was more resistant to radiation than the inner tunica layers and the corpus; pith rib meristem was still more resistant. Inflorescence and floral meristems were rarely found, but once formed, continued development. One-year-old budless spurs had a few leaves but neither an organized apical meristem nor leaf primordia. Surface of the apex was often folded. Periderm and, later, deep-lying wound cambium developed. Expansion of pith, vascular tissue, cortex, wound cambium and periderm caused enlargement of club tips and swollen spurs. Many lateral buds from the gamma field which were propagated without irradiation in early August grew into long shoots with terminal buds. Scions removed from irradiation in November and inserted into normal trees showed lower survival and many of their shoots were budless. This suggests that the capacity for normal growth of a bud damaged by chronic irradiation is greater in mid-summer than later in the year. With reference to percentage of budless shoots, ‘Delicious,’ ‘Golden Delicious’ and ‘McIntosh’ were more sensitive to an average dose of 24 r per day and lower doses than were ‘Cox,’ ‘Macoun’ and ‘Spy.’ Symptoms of radiation damage in apple buds during the first year were similar following acute or chronic irradiation. Degree of radiation damage, as expressed by death of apical meristems, was concluded to vary with stage of development of the bud, structure of the apical meristem, and genetic constitution.  相似文献

I examined the annual pattern of seed production in three Korean populations ofPinus densiflora from 1998 to 2002. During the fall season, data were collected on the numbers of cones per tagged tree, as well as seed counts, their mass, and seed set following dehiscence. Dbh was measured for individual trees during each spring. Overall, 80.3% of the trees produced seed cones in even-numbered years compared with 51.6% in odd-numbered years. Moreover, trees that matured seed cones in even years produced 12 times more seeds per tree than those in odd years. Tree diameters generally increased significantly during the summers after odd-numbered years, although the trees at one site showed a consistent growth rate each year after 2000. Annual variations in individual seed mass, seed set, and the proportion of damaged seed cones occurred largely within odd or even years. Based on these results, the following conclusions were made: 1) seed-cone production ofP. densiflora is somewhat synchronized, but is not an all-or-nothing phenomenon, 2)P. densiflora tends to undergo mast seeding at two-year intervals, and 3) this alternate-year excess in seed crop may have evolved to increase fitness, though the exact evolutionary mechanism is unclear.  相似文献

Caryodendron orinocense Karst. (Euphorbiaceae) is an important neotropical, dioecious crop tree providing oil—and protein-rich seeds. Increases in size and number of leaves, flowers, and fruits were estimated for 100 trees in a plantation in costal Ecuador. Height increase was one meter per year—female trees grew less than non-flowering and male individuals. Trees matured at about 4 m height, but flowering and production of fruits remained low until tree height exceeded 8 m. Flowering and leaf production started at the beginning of the rainy season, and flowers were pollinated by large flies. Foliage damage did not seriously reduce leaf number nor fruit production. The plantation studied yielded 150 kg seeds per hectare per year. A plantation with 10 m high trees and a sex ratio of nine females per male will produce 500 kg seeds per hectare per year after about 12 years. Production will increase much more in older plantations.  相似文献

Summary Ammonium nitrate fertilizer, labelled with15N, was applied in spring to winter wheat growing in undisturbed monoliths of clay and sandy loam soil in lysimeters; the rates of application were respectively 95 and 102 kg N ha−1 in the spring of 1976 and 1975. Crops of winter wheat, oilseed rape, peas and barley grown in the following 5 or 6 years were treated with unlabelled nitrogen fertilizer at rates recommended for maximum yields. During each year of the experiments the lysimeters were divided into treatments which were either freelydrained or subjected to periods of waterlogging. Another labelled nitrogen application was made in 1980 to a separate group of lysimeters with a clay soil and a winter wheat crop to study further the uptake of nitrogen fertilizer in relation to waterlogging. In the first growing season, shoots of the winter wheat at harvest contained 46 and 58% of the fertilizer nitrogen applied to the clay and sandy loam soils respectively. In the following year the crops contained a further 1–2% of the labelled fertilizer, and after 5 and 6 years the total recoveries of labelled fertilizer in the crops were 49 and 62% on the clay and sandy loam soils respectively. In the first winter after the labelled fertilizer was applied, less than 1% of the fertilizer was lost in the drainage water, and only about 2% of the total nitrogen (mainly nitrate) in the drainage water from both soils was derived from the fertilizer. Maximum annual loss occurred the following year but the proportion of tracer nitrogen in drainage was nevertheless smaller. Leaching losses over the 5 and 6 years from the clay and sandy loam soil were respectively 1.3 and 3.9% of the original application. On both soils the percentage of labelled nitrogen to the total crop nitrogen content was greater after a period of winter waterlogging than for freely-drained treatments. This was most marked on the clay soil; evidence points to winter waterlogging promoting denitrification and the consequent loss of soil nitrogen making the crop more dependent on spring fertilizer applications.  相似文献

Phenology of a common roadside fig in Sarawak   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The phenology of a dioecious fig (Ficus fulva, Reinw. ex Bl.; 25 female, 26 male trees) was studied at Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak. Dioecious fig phenology provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the influence of climate and sexual specialization on the obligate fig–fig pollinator/ovule parasite interaction. Leaf phenology was strongly correlated between sexes. Trees dropped leaves during drought and initiated new leaf growth after the renewal of rain. Before the production of large crops of syconia, trees shed their leaves and then new leaves and syconia were initiated together. Syconia were produced in synchronous crops with asynchrony between trees maintaining a relatively even production of syconia within the tree group. Syconia abortion on male but not female trees, was negatively correlated with the proportion of trees with male phase syconia. A severe drought in early 1998 significantly disrupted the phenology thereafter. The duration of crop development was approximately twice as long on female trees as on males, and total syconia production was much higher on male trees. Plots of syconia diameter versus dry weight suggest sexual specialization in the investment profile during crop development. Male trees also sometimes produced a small crop of syconia immediately before a large crop, probably to supply wasps for the main crop. Sexes had different growth strategies with male trees growing more as small individuals and slightly delaying reproduction. Diameter at breast height was significantly correlated with total syconia production in male trees but not in females. Syconia production was best predicted by canopy width.  相似文献

Hurricanes frequently affect the forests of South and Central America; however, few studies have quantified their effects to forest structure, especially when concentrating on the food supply of an animal population. Hurricane Iris made landfall in Southern Belize on 8 October 2001, severely damaging a 52 hectare site where the behavioral ecology of a population of Central American Black Howlers (Alouatta pigra) had been under study for 2.5 yr. The hurricane resulted in a mortality rate of 35 percent for major food trees, which was primarily attributed to uprooting, snapping, and major delimbing. This damage accounted for 97 percent of the food tree loss between the two sample periods. Tree species differences were found in both the percentage loss and category of damage to food trees. Trees of different heights also experienced different percentage loss and levels of damage; subcanopy and emergent trees experienced higher loss than canopy trees, and subcanopy trees were frequently uprooted. This was partially attributed to a lack of buttressing on these subcanopy trees. Buttressing was found to decrease the frequency of uprooting. Tree size was the only factor that did not influence either damage or death. Trees from which fruit were eaten by black howlers died more than twice as often as did trees eaten for leaves.  相似文献

Many woodland understories are managed with prescribed fire. While prescribed burns intended to manipulate understory vegetation and fuels usually do not cause excessive tree mortality, sublethal canopy damage may occur and can affect tree vigor and reproductive output. We monitored Quercus garryana trees in western Washington, USA with multiple canopy thermocouples during three prescribed burns. Peak temperatures recorded in tree canopies ranged from 36 to 649°C. We assessed leaf damage immediately after burning, and flower, leaf and acorn production in the following year in the vicinity of each thermocouple. Leaf scorch first occurred with peak thermocouple temperatures around 45°C, was variable up to 75°C, but above 75°C all leaves were killed. Buds, including their reproductive and leaf organs were more resistant to heat damage than leaves, but leaf scorch had predictive value in forecasting bud organ damage. Staminate and pistillate inflorescences and acorn production per bud decreased and bud mortality increased with maximum thermocouple temperature. In two burns where the highest peak temperatures reached 137°C, there was no difference in leaf production between burned and control plots in the spring following burning. However, no staminate or pistillate inflorescences were produced when thermocouple peak temperatures went above 55 or 68°C, respectively. While heat damage to bud organs was detected, production of reproductive organs was also curtailed at temperatures lower than could reasonably be attributed to heat damage. Thus, it is probable that some other fire-related factor, possibly smoke, was also involved.  相似文献

This study investigated the growth responses to defoliation, fire-exposure and climate factors of a widespread Africana savanna tree, Bauhinia thonningii Schumacher, at a site in central Zambia. Experimental trees (n = 47) were either exposed to fire (n = 12) in the first half of the dry season or protected from fire (n = 35). Some of the fire-protected trees (n = 12) were subjected to artificial defoliation in two consecutive years. Phenological responses (bud break, leaf flush and leaf production) to fire-exposure and defoliation were monitored on permanently marked sample shoots over a 2-year period. Radial tree growth (diameter at 1.3 m above ground) was measured annually over a 7-year period from 1998 to 2005. During the first two years, defoliation and fire-exposure advanced the onset of bud break and leaf flush but fire-exposed trees produced significantly less leaves than did trees protected from fire, probably because scorching caused more severe shoot die-back than is normal. Leaf production was also significantly affected by experimental treatments and their interaction with year. Although treatments had significant short-term effects on radial growth, previous-year growth significantly influenced current-year growth, thereby confirming the existence of autocorrelation in the time-series growth data of B. thonningii. The interaction between previous-year growth and climate factors explained a significant proportion (25–40%, P < 0.001) of the variance in annual tree growth. Variogram models predicted that a 2-year manual defoliation treatment would shorten the longer-term growth cycle while continuous fire-exposure extended the cycle by one year. The results are useful for the management of savanna trees.  相似文献

Summary Primordia from buds of sun and shade twigs of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were collected six times a year for anatomical investigations. Differentiation into sun-leaf and shade-leaf primordia was first observed in early August. Sun-leaf primordia had five, and shade-leaf primordia four layers of mesophyll meristem cells. With potted graft unions of beeches possible structural changes of leaf primordia were investigated. Trees adapted to shade develop sun-leaf primordia when put into full daylight, provided the transfer happened before July. Trees adapted to full daylight developed leaf primordia which remained structurally sun-leaf primordia when the plant was kept under shade conditions. Shadeleaf branches of young beech trees cut in February in order to expose the shade buds to full daylight developed either shade leaves or intermediate shade/sun leaves. These experiments show that the subtending leaf may provide the developing axillary bud with photoassimilates, but its character, whether sun or shade leaf, has no influence on the character of the developing leaf primordia.  相似文献

The boreal forest is predicted to experience the greatest warming of any forest biome during the next 50–100 years, but the effects of warming on vegetation phenology are not well known. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the effects of whole ecosystem warming on bud burst and annual shoot growth of black spruce trees in northern Manitoba, Canada and (2) correlate bud burst to cumulative degree-days (CDD). The experimental design was a complete randomized block design that consisted of four replicated blocks. Each replicate block contained four treatments: soil warming only (heated outside, HO), soil and air warming (heated inside, HI), control outside (no chamber, no heating, CO), and inside a chamber maintained at ambient conditions (no soil or air warming, control inside, CI). Bud burst was measured during the first and second years of the experiment, starting in 2004, and annual shoot growth was measured for the first 3 years (2004–2006) of the study. On average, shoot bud burst occurred 11 and 9 days earlier in 2004 and 2005, respectively, for HI than for other treatments. However, mean CDD required for bud burst for HI was within the standard deviation of CO for both years. In year 1 of the treatments, shoot bud burst occurred earlier for HI than other treatments (CI, CO, HO), but final shoot length of HI trees was less than in CO trees. In the second year of warming, final shoot length was not different for HI than CO. By the third year of warming final shoot length was significantly greater for HI than all other treatments. Empirical results from this study suggest that soil and air warming causes an earlier bud burst for all years of observation and greater shoot lengths by the third season of warming. A longer growing season and greater annual shoot growth should increase carbon uptake by boreal black spruce trees in a warmer climate.  相似文献

Trees along linear features are important landscape features, and their loss threatens ecological connectivity. Until recently, trees outside of woodlands (TOWs) were largely unmapped however; the development of innovation mapping techniques provides opportunities to understand the distribution of such trees and to apply spatially explicit models to explore the importance of trees for connectivity. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of models when investigating tree loss and impacts on connectivity. Specifically, we investigated the consequences of tree loss due to the removal of roadside trees, a common management response for diseased or damaged trees, on wider landscape functional connectivity. We simulated the loss of roadside trees within six focal areas of the south east of the UK. We used a spatially explicit individual-based modelling platform, RangeShifter, to model the movement of 81 hypothetical actively dispersing woodland breeding species across these agriculturally fragmented landscapes. We investigated the extent to which removal of trees, from roadsides within the wider landscape, affected the total number of successful dispersers in any given year and the number of breeding woodlands that became isolated through time. On average roadside trees accounted for < 2% of land cover, but removing 60% of them (~ 1.2% of land cover) nevertheless decreased the number of successful dispersers by up to 17%. The impact was greatest when roadside trees represented a greater proportion of canopy cover. The study therefore demonstrates that models such as RangeShifter can provide valuable tools for assessing the consequences of losing trees outside of woodlands.  相似文献

Data from transect surveys of 20 cool temperate rainforest sites in Tasmania were used to quantify the incidence and spatial distribution of myrtle, Nothofagus cunninghamii, attacked by the mountain pinhole borer, Platypus subgranosus. Attack by this insect is indicative of the disease ‘myrtle wilt’ caused by the pathogenic hyphomycete, Chalara australis. The proportion of myrtle trees attacked by the disease ranged from 9.4 to 53.4%, with an average incidence of 24.6%. Regression analysis indicated that attack decreased with increasing altitude and, after adjusting for altitude, callidendrous forests had a higher incidence of attack than thamnic-implicate forests. In mixed eucalypt-rainforest stands, the incidence of attack increased as both relative and absolute measures of myrtle density increased. However, a significant amount of variation in the incidence of attack remained unexplained by the site and stand variables measured. The incidence of attack differed significantly between diameter classes with the larger diameter trees having the highest incidence of attack. Trees with stem and crown damage had a significantly higher incidence of attack than undamaged trees. Attacked trees tended to be clumped, with the degree of clumping reasonably constant across sites, but dependent on nearest neighbour distance within sites. Dying trees occurred at an average rate of 2.4 trees ha-1 per year or 1.6% of live trees per year across the sites.  相似文献

Does climatic warming increase the risk of frost damage in northern trees?   总被引:6,自引:3,他引:3
Abstract. The effect of climatic warming on the timing of bud burst and the subsequent risk of frost damage on trees in central Finland was assessed with the aid of a computer model, 73 years of temperature data and a climatic scenario corresponding to doubled level of atmospheric CO2. In general, climatic warming hastened bud burst, due to ontogenetic development during warm spells in autumn, winter and spring. During the years with the warmest winters in the scenario conditions: (a) bud burst took place during mid-winter; and (2) depending on the year, the trees were subsequently exposed to temperatures between −27 and −10°C. This finding suggests that the risk of frost damage to trees will be increased if the predicted climatic warming occurs. Because of the assumptions used in the model, the results are not conclusive, but they do point out the importance of further experimental studies on genetic and environmental regulation of timing of bud burst in trees.  相似文献

African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) are ecosystem engineers that browse and damage large quantities of vegetation during their foraging and movement. Though elephant trail networks and clearings are conspicuous features of many African forests, the consequences of elephant foraging for forest structure and diversity are poorly documented. In this study in northeastern Gabon, we compare stem size, stem density, proportional damage, species diversity, and species relative abundance of seedlings and saplings in the vicinity of seven tree species that produce elephant-preferred fruits (“elephant trees”) relative to control trees that do not. Across 34 survey trees, with a combined census area of 2.04 ha, we recorded data on 26,128 woody stems in three sizes classes. Compared with control trees, the area around elephant trees had the following: (a) a significantly greater proportion of damaged seedlings and a marginally greater proportion of damaged saplings (with 82% and 24% greater odds of damage, respectively); (b) no significant difference in stem density or species diversity; and (c) a significantly greater relative abundance of seedlings of elephant tree species. Increasing distance away from focal elephant trees was associated with significantly reduced sapling stem damage, significantly increased sapling stem density, and significantly increased sapling species diversity. Considered in sum, our results suggest that elephants can affect the structure and diversity of Afrotropical forests through their foraging activities, with some variation based on location and plant size class. Developing a more complete understanding of elephants’ ecological effects will require continued research, ideally with manipulative experiments.  相似文献
