The levels of Cu, Fe and Zn in water, sediment and Cynothrissa mento, a commercially important fish species, were investigated from April 2007 to March 2008 at three sites in Ologe Lagoon. Metal levels in the water column and C. mento were lower than the FAO/WHO drinking water and food safety limits. In most cases, metal concentrations were highest during the dry season and lowest in the wet season. Metal concentrations in sediment and C. mento varied significantly among the sampling stations, but in the water column only the levels of Fe and Zn differed significantly between stations. Concentrations of metals in C. mento were significantly affected by wet and dry seasons. The metal concentrations in Ologe Lagoon were lower than the values reported in some Nigerian water bodies. While the Ologe Lagoon system contains the heavy metals studied, their levels in the water, sediment and fish are still within acceptable limits.  相似文献

The rates of ingestion of natural bacterial assemblages by natural populations of zooplankton (>50 μm in size) were measured during a 19-day period in eutrophic Frederiksborg Slotssø, Denmark, as well as in experimental enclosures (containing 5.3 m3 of lake water). The fish and nutrients of the enclosures were manipulated. In enclosures without fish, large increases in ingestion by zooplankton >140 μm in size were found (up to 3 μg of C liter−1 h−1), compared with values less than 0.3 μg of C liter−1 h−1 in the enclosures with fish and in the open lake. Daphnia cucullata and D. galeata dominated the community of zooplankton of >140 μm. Ingestion rates for zooplankton between 50 and 140 μm decreased after a period of about 8 days, in all enclosures and in the lake, to values below 0.1 μg of C liter−1 h−1. On the last 2 sampling days, somewhat higher values were observed in the enclosures with fish present. The >50-μm zooplankton ingested 48 to 51% of the bacterial net secondary production in enclosures without fish, compared to 4% in the enclosures with added fish. Considering the sum of bacterial secondary production plus biomass change, 35 to 41% of the available bacteria were ingested by zooplankton of >50 μm in the enclosures without fish, compared with 4 to 6% in the enclosures with added fish and 21% in the open lake. Fish predation reduced the occurrence of zookplankton sized >50 μm and thus left a large proportion of the available bacteria to zooplankton sized <50 μm. In fact, there were 4.6 × 103 to 5.0 × 103 flagellates (4 to 8 μm in size) ml−1 in the enclosures with fish added as well as in the lake, compared with 0.5 × 102 to 2.3 × 102 ml−1 in the enclosures without fish. This link in the food chain was reduced when fish predation on zooplankton was eliminated and a direct route of dissolved organic matter, via the bacteria to the zooplankton, was established.  相似文献

Manganese-oxidizing heterotrophic bacteria were found to comprise a significant proportion of the bacterial community of Lake Washington (Seattle, Wash.) and Lake Virginia (Winter Park, Fla.). Identification of these freshwater bacteria showed that members of a variety of genera are capable of oxidizing manganese. Isolates maintained in the laboratory spontaneously lost the ability to oxidize manganese. A direct correlation was found between the presence of plasmid DNA and the ability of the organism to oxidize manganese.  相似文献

High school biology is typically taught with an emphasis on human biology. The human body is broken down into distinct systems without regard to the origins of its parts. As a result, students are left with the impression that our biology is incredibly unique as opposed to a consequence of conservative replication and the retention of traits over millions of years. We studied the attachment of a number of freshwater bacteria from River Sowe, Coventry, England, to test substrata. The attachment of each organism to hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces was evaluated, and further studies evaluated the attachment of selected isolates to a number of substrata with a range of water wettabilities. The wettability of each substratum was determined by contact angle measurements and was expressed as the work of adhesion (WA). No generic pattern of attachment to the test surfaces was found, although the majority of the organisms isolated showed a preference for the hydrophobic surface. A more detailed study of selected isolates showed a relationship between WA and number of attached cells. Each bacterium attached in maximum numbers to a surface that was characteristic of that organism and that had a WA between 75 and 105 mJ m−2.  相似文献

The bacteria on the gills of 7 species of freshwater salmonid fishes were examined qualitatively and quantitatively. Both wild and hatchery cultured salmonids were examined. The former were obtained from 12 different locations in British Columbia. Species of Pseudomonas and Cytophaga predominated on both groups of fish. The microflora of the wild fish also contained Aeromonas and members of the Brevibacterium –coryneform– Erysipelothrix group. The microflora of cultured fish was less varied. As many as 106 viable organisms/g wet weight of gill tissue were recovered.  相似文献

Bacteria on plant surfaces were examined using epifluorescence, bright-field microscopy and an impression technique. Staining bacteria directly on the plant surface with phenolic aniline blue was found to be the best method to use for the determination of bacterial density. The effect on the estimation of population density of pretreatment of the plant with agents such as methanol and eosin yellowish was investigated. The average sizes of the bacterial populations on two freshwater plants, Rorippa and Lemna , estimated after staining by this method, were 5 times 106 and 9 times 106 bacteria cm-z respectively.  相似文献

采用改进的毛细管法 ,研究了圆背角无齿蚌 (Anodontawoodianapacifica)和三角帆蚌 (Hyriopsiscum ingii)两种淡水河蚌离体血细胞对两种水体中常见病原细菌的趋化移动作用 ,及血清对其的影响。结果显示 ,两种河蚌的离体血细胞对细菌都具有趋化移动作用 ,产生趋化移动的血细胞数量都显著高于无细菌的对照组 (P <0 0 5 )。在有血清时 ,血细胞对荧光极毛杆菌 (Pseudomonasfluorescens)的趋化移动活性略高于肠型点状气单孢菌 (Aeromonaspunctataf.intestinalis) ,圆背角无齿蚌离体血细胞的趋化移动能力显著高于三角帆蚌 (P <0 0 5 )。血清对河蚌离体血细胞的趋化移动作用有显著的促进作用 (P <0 0 5 )。  相似文献
