Microhabitat selection is particularly important to increase the survival rate and reproductive success of animals inhabiting heterogeneous environments. I investigated microhabitat selection of Buergeria japonica tadpoles inhabiting the stream in a coastal area to reveal how animals select their appropriate habitat under heterogeneous and unstable environments on the subtropical Okinawa Island of Japan. Tadpoles are sensitive to subtle environmental changes, and the mouths of streams in coastal areas that have intense environmental fluctuations such as desiccation and sudden changes in current velocity would be risky habitat for tadpoles. Tadpoles of B. japonica can inhabit both lotic and lentic systems. Field observations showed that, among six physical factors (water depth, water temperature, salinity, pH, current velocity, and substrate), current velocity and water temperature were key factors in microhabitat selection by tadpoles. It is likely that tadpoles stay at low current velocity sites to reduce the probability of being washed out to the sea by a sudden squall and that selection of warmer sites would accelerate development of tadpoles so as to escape the heterogeneous aquatic habitat sooner.

Aspects of habitat selection in the mosquitofish gambusia affinis
Laboratory experiments were performed to determine behavioral preferences of Gambusia affinis for habitat variables in partitioned aquaria. The fish preferred calm water, dark-colored substrates and subsurface vegetation providing lateral concealment. Floating cover, which obstructed access to the surface, was avoided. Lack of preference for real over plastic plant cover indicates that visual rather than chemical cues are involved. These laboratory preferences correspond to the reported microhabitat distribution of G. affinis in nature and indicate the presence of an active habitat preference, as opposed to passive habitat correlation, in this species. Species-specific habitat preferences, which may be narrower where a species occurs sympatrically with its congeners, probably form part of a reproductive isolating mechanism.

Theory predicts that environmental heterogeneity in space or in time can maintain genetic polymorphism. Stable polymorphisms are expected to be more readily maintained if there are genotype specific habitat preferences. Genotype specific preferences for oviposition sites in Drosophila could be a major factor promoting habitat selection, and thus the maintenance of genetic variation. This hypothesis is being tested using the cactophilic species, D. buzzatii and D. aldrichi, where available evidence indicates a potential for such habitat selection, the habitats (oviposition sites) being yeast species found in the natural environment of these flies (cactus rots). Genetic variation for oviposition preferences was tested using isofemale lines—for D. buzzatii, a total of 60 lines from seven localities widely distributed through the species range in Australia, and for D. aldrichi, 21 lines from three of these localities. Females were given a choice of five yeast species as oviposition sites. Genetic variation for oviposition preferences on these natural substrates was demonstrated. There was significant variation among isofemale lines within populations in their patterns of preferences for oviposition on the five yeast species. However, analyses of preferences for each yeast species separately showed that the genetic variation for preferences relates to only three of the five species. Heritabilities of individual female preferences for these three species were low, ranging up to 9%. Little geographic differentiation was apparent among populations, most likely due to similar selection regimes within each population. Within populations, this kind of habitat selection could act to maintain polymorphisms, both at loci determining the habitat preferences and at other loci in linkage disequilibrium with them.

When assessing fragmentation effects on species, not only habitat preferences on the landscape scale, but also microhabitat selection is an important factor to consider, as microhabitat is also affected by habitat disturbance, but nevertheless essential for species for foraging, nesting and sheltering. In the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil we examined microhabitat selection of six Pyriglena leucoptera (white-shouldered fire-eye), 10 Sclerurus scansor (rufous-breasted leaftosser), and 30 Chiroxiphia caudata (blue manakin). We radio-tracked the individuals between May 2004 and February 2005 to gain home ranges based on individual fixed kernels. Vegetation structures in core plots and fringe plots were compared. In C. caudata, we additionally assessed the influence of behavioural traits on microhabitat selection. Further, we compared microhabitat structures in the fragmented forest with those in the contiguous, and contrasted the results with the birds' preferences. Pyriglena leucoptera preferred liana tangles that were more common in the fragmented forest, whereas S. scansor preferred woody debris, open forest floor (up to 0.5 m), and a thin closed leaf litter cover which all occurred significantly more often in the contiguous forest. Significant differences were detected in C. caudata for vegetation densities in the different strata; the distance of core plots to the nearest lek site was significantly influenced by sex and age. However, core sites of C. caudata in fragmented and contiguous forests showed no significant differences in structure. Exploring microhabitat selection and behavior may greatly support the understanding of habitat selection of species and their susceptibility to fragmentation on the landscape scale.

Both habitat preferences and social organization can influence the spatial distributions of individuals. We explored effects of individual behavior and social organization on distributions of arc-eye hawkfish (Paracirrhites arcatus) in lagoons of French Polynesia. Analysis of habitat selectivity data obtained during surveys revealed that the most highly preferred microhabitat of arc-eye hawkfish was large Pocillopora coral with an open branching morphology. However, such corals were rare and most hawkfish occupied smaller, less preferred Pocillopora. Indeed, total abundance of Pocillopora explained nearly two thirds of the lagoon-wide variation in abundance of hawkfish and the derived relationship between the numbers of hawkfish and Pocillopora predicted 86% of the spatial variation in hawkfish abundance during subsequent surveys. In contrast, large, open-branched Pocillopora explained little of the spatial variation in abundance of hawkfish. Individual behavior and social organization significantly impacted use of the most highly preferred Pocillopora. During a colonization experiment set up outside hawkfish home ranges, all colonizers resided on the most highly preferred corals. Following addition of the most highly preferred Pocillopora corals to areas occupied by hawkfish, only the largest, socially dominant individuals obtained access to added corals, spending significantly more time and increasing both aggressive acts and prey attacks from these substrates. These results illustrate the importance of understanding the modulating effects of social behavior on habitat use and explain why most hawkfish individuals do not occupy their most preferred microhabitat type.

During a study of microhabitat use by gilt darters (Percina evides), we compared two methods for quantifying microhabitat availability in a southern Appalachian stream (USA). The first method used stratified random sampling throughout the site and the second involved taking constrained random measurements within a 2-m radius of the focal fish. Darters were generally over-represented in microhabitats with higher average velocities, greater amounts of erosional substrata, and lower amounts of depositional and large substrata. The two methods generally yielded similar patterns of microhabitat use. Nonetheless, of the seven microhabitat categories in which differential microhabitat use occurred in summer, four were present in both data sets, but three differed between methods. We observed no differences between methods for autumn data. Finally, the standard deviations of the summer-stratified random data set were significantly greater (sign test, P < 0.05) than those of the constrained data set. Our results suggest that either method for quantifying microhabitat availability can be used to quantify the general habitat use patterns of this species, but constrained analyses yielded a more restricted view of the total habitat available. Nonetheless, if the fishes range over a site, clearly stratified habitat availability analysis is preferred. Handling editor: J. A. Cambray

Understanding species‐specific habitat selection is essential to identify how natural systems are assembled and maintained, and how emerging natural and anthropogenic disturbances will affect ecosystem function. In the Neotropics, Peter's tent‐roosting bat (Uroderma bilobatum), known to roost in forests, has become abundant in human‐modified areas. To understand how habitat characteristics in both intact forest and human‐modified areas influence the presence and density of U. bilobatum, we characterized habitat use at two scales (macrohabitat and microhabitat) and used logistic and poisson regressions to determine which habitat characteristics best predicted the presence and density of U. bilobatum within each scale. Moreover, we performed a redundancy analysis to determine which habitat scale explained more variation. As these bats are obligate tent roosters, we used tent as a surrogate for bat presence and density. We found that both macrohabitat and microhabitat scales explained variation in presence and density. Characteristics of the microhabitat scale, however, had higher predictive power, revealing that U. bilobatum preferentially inhabits areas with high density of coconut palms. Coconut palms were introduced recently in the Neotropics and are found only in human‐modified areas. Therefore, we hypothesize that U. bilobatum is expanding its range into these areas following the expanded distribution of this exotic plant species.

Abstract This review clarifies important points on habitat selection by the Swamp Rat Rattus lutreolus (Rodentia: Muridae), a species that has been the subject of much research in Australia and has provided a useful model for understanding ecological and biological processes. It also provides an opportunity to cite important earlier research, not readily available through electronic search engines, thus bringing it into current literature to avoid its disappearance into Internet obscurity. We comment on some papers in the literature to correct errors detected and to emphasize the importance of due care in all aspects of a research project, including its reporting. We show that both floristic and structural components have been reported as important to an understanding of habitat and microhabitat selection by R. lutreolus and conclude that it is vegetation density that is of paramount importance. Female R. lutreolus are clearly dominant in driving microhabitat selection, occupying the ‘best’ or densest habitats with male R. lutreolus occupying the next best and Pseudomys or other species, where present occupying the remainder. This demonstrates the important role that intraspecific and interspecific competition play in determining habitat selection. Direct predation and the perception of predation risk may also play a role in habitat selection, again perceived to be pushing individuals towards denser vegetation, representing ‘better cover’. Whether these effects operate as bottom‐up or top‐down needs careful consideration. Climatic variables, such as ENSO‐affecting productivity, and related variables such as temperature and humidity may also play important roles in habitat selection, as can disturbance effects such as wildfire. The relative importance of all of these potential determining factors may vary from place to place, particularly when climatic clines are involved.

Microhabitat selection of ostracods in relation to predation and food
Experiments with the cyprinid fishVimba vimba as predator and the ostracodsCypridopsis vidua, Darwinula stevensoni andCytherissa lacustris as prey show that conspicuous coloration enhances predation risk for the ostracods. When the ostracods are allowed to retreat into sediment, risk is markedly reduced. ostracods show clear microhabitat preferences which are influenced by habitat structure and food supply. Exposed plant surfaces are visited only if they bear food and if the ostracods are not satiated.

Many coral reef fishes have restricted depth ranges that are established at settlement or soon after, but the factors limiting these distributions are largely unknown. This study examines whether the availability of microhabitats (reef substrata) explains depth limits, and evaluates whether juvenile growth and survival are lower beyond these limits. Depth-stratified surveys of reef fishes at Kimbe Bay (Papua New Guinea) showed that the abundance of new settlers and the cover of coral substrata differed significantly among depths. A field experiment investigated whether settling coral reef fishes preferred particular depths, and whether these depth preferences were dependent on microhabitat. Small patch reefs composed of identical coral substrata were set up at five depths (3, 6, 10, 15 and 20 m), and settlement patterns were compared to those on unmanipulated reef habitat at the same five depths. For all species, settlement on patch reefs differed significantly among depths despite uniform substratum composition. For four of the six species tested, depth-related settlement patterns on unmanipulated habitat and on patch reefs did not differ, while for the other two, depth ranges were greater on the patch reefs than on unmanipulated habitat. A second experiment examined whether depth preferences reflected variation in growth and survival when microhabitat was similar. Newly settled individuals of Chrysiptera parasema and Dascyllus melanurus were placed, separately, on patch reefs at five depths (as above) and their survival and growth monitored. D. melanurus, which is restricted to shallow depths, had highest survival and growth at the shallowest depth. Depth did not affect either survival or growth of C. parasema, which has a broader depth range than D. melanurus (between 6 and 15 m). This suggests that the fitness costs potentially incurred by settling outside a preferred depth range may depend on the strength of the depth preference.

The conservation problems affecting the endangered rodent Microtus cabrerae are mainly related to habitat loss and fragmentation. In the present study, we examined the presence/absence of the species in a group of potentially suitable habitat patches, and then evaluated the microhabitat attributes of locations used by wild-ranging individuals within occupied patches. Our results revealed that shallow flooding and abundant grass cover appear to be important factors in determining the presence among localities, but high rush cover strongly determined the presence and habitat use by voles both among and within localities. The preservation of these microhabitat characteristics may be required to effectively ensure the occurrence and stability of M. cabrerae colonies.

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is an endangered species across most of its distribution range, and information on its ecological requirements is needed to implement effective conservation measures. Its habitat use has been studied in different areas and at various spatial scales. However, being a nocturnal species, there is scarce information on its habitat selection during foraging periods. In this work we analyse nocturnal habitat use of white-clawed crayfish in pools of a small stream in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula at two different scales: (1) microhabitat selection and (2) pool characteristics. Large crayfish showed a clear positive selection for deeper microhabitats, a selection pattern that was weaker for medium-sized crayfish and absent for small ones. On the other hand, crayfish of all sizes avoided cobble and boulder microhabitats and positively selected fine substrate and more exposed microhabitats. Crayfish abundance in pools was positively influenced by pool area, pool depth and the availability of fine substrates, especially silt. While studies on white-clawed crayfish habitat use have often stressed the importance of rough substrates as crayfish refuge, our results show that fine substrates are positively selected by foraging crayfish of all size classes and promoted active crayfish abundance in pools. These apparently contradictory results may be due to the differences in microhabitat preferences exhibited by active and inactive crayfish. Thus, our results help to better complete the picture of white-clawed crayfish habitat requirements.

The successful eradication of introduced rodents from islets off the coast of Mauritius has led to local conservation bodies investigating the possibility of translocation as a measure of safeguarding endemic reptile populations. The present study was the first to determine the habitat and microhabitat requirements of Telfair's skinks (Leiolopisma telfairii) on Round Island, Mauritius, with a view to aiding future translocation projects to islands within their historic range. Contrasting preferences found for Telfair's skink at macro- and micro- habitat levels underline the importance of sampling at multiple ecological scales in such investigations. Significantly fewer sightings of L. telfairii were recorded in bare rock habitats compared to more vegetated habitats. Conversely, at a microhabitat scale principal component analysis indicated structural characteristics were the primary determinant of microhabitat choice. The first dietary analysis of Telfair's skinks confirmed their status as omnivores. Cockroaches (Blattodea spp.) appeared to be a primary food source. Four exotic plant species were also present in faecal samples and the potential for L. telfairii to aid their dispersal is discussed. Implications for the long-term management and proposed translocation of Telfair's skinks are discussed.

Summary An experiment was conducted to determine the microhabitat preferences of two heteromyid rodents, Dipodomys ordi and Perognathus flavus. This experiment used marked seeds and the atomic absorption spectrophotometer in order to study the environment as a mosiac of microhabitats. The results of our analysis indicate that these two heteromyids are microhabitat selectors. The preferences of the rodents are D. ordi: grass habitat 0.0%, near grass habitat 22.5%, open habitat 77.4% and P. flavus: grass habitat 46.2%, near grass habitat 32.2%, open habitat 21.4%. The overlap between the two species is only 0.43.

Although codistributed species are affected by the same abiotic factors, such as rivers and seasonal flooding regimes, ecological traits, such as locomotion habits and habitat preferences, may also influence differences in levels of genetic diversity and differentiation. We examined population genetic structure and diversity of Hylaeamys megacephalus and Oecomys aff. roberti, two cricetid rodent species from the mid‐Araguaia River in central Brazil, using mitochondrial DNA sequence data. Specifically, we aim to test whether the Araguaia River acts as a barrier to the gene flow of these two species and to assess how ecological traits, such as locomotion habits and habitat preferences, may influence differences in levels of genetic diversity and differentiation. As both species occur in flooded forests, neither showed genetic differences related to river banks. Oecomys aff. roberti showed stronger population structure that appears to be associated with isolation by distance. This arboreal species maintained stable populations in the Araguaia River, while the terrestrial H. megacephalus was more affected by seasonal floods, resulting in a genetic signature of population expansion. Our initial predictions were largely supported by our results given that locomotion habits and habitat preferences of each species appears to have played a role on the genetic structure of these two sympatric rodent species.

Selective pressure for choosing an adequate habitat should be strong in semisedentary animals because they have limited mobility once established. I examined microhabitat preferences and the adaptive value of these preferences in the antlion larva Myrmeloen crudelis, a semisedentary insect that digs pit traps in soils to capture small arthropods. I tested the habitat preferences of M. crudelis between two soil types in a tropical dry forest of Costa Rica. Specifically, I compared the soil particle composition size within and outside antlion aggregations and manipulated the availability of fine- and coarse-grained soil to assess how differences in soil grain size affect the design and performance of larval traps. Adjacent to antlion pits the soil was composed of a greater proportion of fine-grained particles (2 mm) than soil 1 m away from the pits. A set of experiments demonstrated that (1) in the presence of equal availability of fine- and coarse-grained soils, all larvae built their pits in fine-grained soil; (2) the larvae required less time to start and finish traps in fine-grained soil; (3) the larvae constructed larger and deeper pits in fine-grained soil; and (4) prey capture increased greatly in fine-grained traps compared with coarse-grained traps. Antlion larvae respond to variations in the proportion of fine particles in the soil, suggesting that antlion aggregations result from an active microhabitat selection. The preference for fine-grained soils is adaptive since pits constructed in such substrate are functional for longer periods and much more successful in trapping prey than pits in coarse-grained soil. Sit-and-wait predators that use sessile traps are spatially constrained to track prey abundance. Therefore, the ability to detect and select microhabitats with better conditions that enhance capture success may be under strong selection for this type of organism.

I analyzed nest site preferences and whether these preferences were linked to nest success of five bird species breeding in an arid area of southern South America. Most nests (90%) were located in three plant species (Geoffroea decorticans, Capparis atamisquea, and Atriplex lampa). Serpophaga griseiceps, Poospiza ornata, and P. torquata nested in plants with size significantly different from randomly selected plants. At the mesohabitat scale (i.e., habitat patch surrounding the nest), four species showed clear differences from random patches within the general habitat, and the remaining species (Saltatricula multicolor) showed a non-significant trend. The daily survival rate of S. griseiceps nests placed in the preferred plant species (i.e., G. decorticans) was lower than those in the other nest-plants. In the other four bird species, nest survival did not differ between preferred and other plants used for nesting. At the scale of microhabitat (i.e., plant size and location of the nest inside the plant), no significant differences were detected between unsuccessful and successful nests. Similarly, unsuccessful nest patches did not differ significantly in habitat features from those that were successful. High nest predation rates found in this habitat (around 85% for the total assemblage) and a relatively high diversity of predators (and of predation tactics) appear to impede the presence of safe sites for nesting (i.e., there are trade-offs between avoidance strategies).

A study was carried out in the Mlali river in south-central Tanzania with two aims. First, to determine microhabitat availability in two sites (A and B) with respect to water depth, water velocity and dominant substratum type. Second, to assess microhabitat use by Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host snail of intestinal schistosomiasis and to investigate whether these snails show preferences for certain microhabitats. The two sites differed significantly with respect to width, water depth, water velocity and substratum composition. It is suggested that the absence of B. pfeifferi from site B is mainly associated with the high water velocities at that site, where 62% of the measurements exceeded30 cm s-1. In site A, the microhabitat use by 327 B. pfeifferi snails was assessed by means of direct observation. No significant relationships were found between snail size and the habitat variables investigated, indicating that snail size appeared to be of no importance in spatial microhabitat selection. B. pfeifferi snails showed statistically significant preferences for shallow water (depth: 2–7 cm) and the preferred water velocities ranged between 12 and 21 cm s-1 with an estimated optimum at13.3 cm s-1. No statistically significant preferences for substratum type were found. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
