Single unit responses in the dorsal lateral geniculate body to stimulation of the optic chiasma (testing) and area 17 (conditioning) of the visual cortex were studied in unanesthetized cats immobilized with tubocurarine. Two types of unit responses were found: P-responses (considered to be of relay, or principal, cells) and I-responses (considered to be of interneurons), whose parameters differed distinctly. Interaction between stimulation of the visual cortex and optic chiasma consisted of depression of the ability of the P cells of the nucleus to respond to testing stimulation. It is suggested that cortical influences on stimulus conduction by P cells of the nucleus is based on postsynaptic inhibition with the participation of interneurons.A. A. Unit responses in area 17 of the visual cortex to stimulation of the lateral geniculate body and optic tract were studied in experiments on unanesthetized cats immobilized with D-tubocurarine. Of the neurons tested, 53.6% responded to stimulation of the lateral geniculate body. In 92% of these cells the responses were orthodromic with latent periods of between 2 and 12.5 msec. Most cells responded with latent periods of 2.0–2.5, 3.0–3.5, and 4.0–4.5 msec, corresponding to latent periods of the components of the electropositive wave of the primary response. Antidromic responses to stimulation of the lateral geniculate body were given by 8% of neurons. The difference between the latent periods of responses of the same visual cortical neurons to stimulation of the optic tract and lateral geniculate body was 0.1–1.8 msec, but for most neurons (55.8%) it was 0.5–1 msec. The histograms of response latencies of visual cortical neurons to stimulation of the above-mentioned formations were found to be similar. It is concluded that the optic radiation contains three principal groups of fibers with conduction velocities of 28.5–16.6, 11.7–8.9, and 7.4–6.0 m/sec, respectively.A. A. Responses of relay neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate body to stimulation of area 17 of the visual cortex and the optic chiasma were studied in curarized cats. A high degree of correlation was found between the latent periods of antidromic responses of these neurons to stimulation of the visual cortex and orthodromic responses of the same neurons to stimulation of the optic chiasma (r=0.895; P=0.01). In 9% of cases antidromic unit responses were recorded to stimulation of the optic chiasma, evidence that the optic nerve contains centrifugal fibers. The functional role of the temporal dispersion of the afferent flow in the visual system is discussed.A. A. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev. Recovery cycles of unit responses in the primary visual cortex to local photic stimulation of their receptive fields were studied in unanesthetized, immobilized cats by the paired stimulus method. In most cases the process of recovery of neuronal reactivity did not follow a steady course. Recovery from depression evoked by the first stimulus took place more suddenly in neurons in the central part of the visual field, and initial recovery of activity was more complete than in peripheral neurons. Differences in the synchronization of inhibitory and excitatory inputs to neurons responsible for central and peripheral vision are discussed.Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Reactions of neurons of area 7 in the parietal association cortex to paired stimulation of the dorsolateral and posteriolateral thalamic nuclei were investigated using methods of extra- and intracellular recording. It was found that conditioning stimulation of association nuclei caused inhibition or facilitation of the test response; in some cases, the effect was indeterminant. Inhibition frequently led to other types of reactions. Inhibition of response to the test stimulus was pronounced during the initial period of IPSP, but facilitation of the response was possible during the repolarization phase. There was no inhibition of test responses when the chloride component of the IPSP was reversed. It is suggested that inhibition of responses to the test stimulus takes place in the presence of an inward chloride current and that facilitation of responses to such a stimulus may be due to increased effectiveness of late EPSPS.I. Changes in the parameters of responses of "low-frequency" and "high-frequency" neurons evoked in the lateral geniculate body by flashes or electrical stimulation of the optic nerve were investigated in immobilized and anesthetized rabbits after strychninization of the visual cortex. Under these conditions mainly an increase in the mean discharge frequency in the responses and a decrease in their latent periods were found in the "low-frequency" neurons, probable evidence of dominance of corticofugal facilitation. In most "high-frequency" neurons, on the other hand, the mean discharge frequency in the responses decreased and the latent periods were increased, evidence of dominance of corticofugal inhibition. It is suggested that reciprocal corticofugal influences exist on neurons connected with central and peripheral channels of the visual projection pathway.Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow, Translated from Neirofiziologiya, Vol. 8, No. 5, pp. 459–466, September–October, 1976.  相似文献

In experiments on curarized cats unit responses in the dorsal lateral geniculate body to stimulation of various zones in area 17 of the visual cortex were analyzed. Of all cells tested 69% were found to respond antidromically and 8% orthodromically; in 7.6% of cells IPSPs occurred either after an initial antidromic spike or without it. The velocities of conduction of excitation along the corticopetal fibers of the optic radiation varied from 28 to 4.3 m/sec, but the three commonest groups of fibers had conduction velocities of 28–19, 14–12, and 10–9.5 m/sec. A difference between latent periods of antidromic responses of the same neurons was found to stimulation of different zones of the visual cortex; this indicates that axons of geniculo-cortical fibers split into several branches which form contacts with several neurons in area 17 of the visual cortex. The degree and possible mechanisms of cortical influences on neurons of the lateral geniculate body are discussed.A. A. The spike responses of the motor cortex neurons (area 4) associated with forelimb movement were studied in awake cats earlier trained to perform placing motor reactions. Responses produced by the same neurons were compared in two situations: 1) when a sound-click conditioning stimulus (CS) was applied in isolation; 2) when a CS followed a preliminary warning stimulus (WS), a light flash, with a 100–1000 msec delay. During the reflex initiation by combined action of the WS and CS, response components that occurred prior to the placing movement (PM) performance under isolated CS action weakened and arrived 50–150 msec later; yet, response components that appeared in the same situation simultaneously with PM onset or later remained unchanged. PM latent periods were not changed when WS was applied. The temporal interval between WS and CS was characterized by depression of neuronal activity; depression duration was determined by the interstimulus delay. It is conceivable that the described transformations in spike responses of cortical neurons occurred due to changes in the sensory direction of the animal's attention; this direction, in all cases, is a crucial factor in the formation of neuronal activity in the cortex.Translated from Neirofiziologiya, Vol. 25, No. 1, pp. 21–27, January–February, 1993.t  相似文献

Mechanisms of the "enhancing" evoked potential arising in the visual cortex in response to repeated stimulation at intervals of 100–150 msec were investigated on unanesthetized rabbits. Such intervals correspond to the phase of postinhibitory activation caused by the first (conditioning) stimulus. It is shown that the enhancing response lasts slightly longer than the primary response to a single stimulus and develops upon stimulation of the optic nerve and subcortical white substance under the point of derivation. The enhancing response is accompanied by a high-amplitude excitatory postsynaptic potential in cortical neurons and by a burst of impulse activity. Hence it can be concluded that it is generated by excitatory synapses of cortical neurons. Characteristic features of the enhancing response are the relation between the duration of the response and its amplitude (the response is shorter, the higher its amplitude) and the weak effect of the intensity of the stimulus on the amplitude of the response. An analysis of the possible mechanisms of enhancement of the response when the stimulus evoking it coincides with the phase of postinhibitory activation leads to the suggestion that this response is generated by a recurrent excitatory intracortical system. This suggestion makes it possible to explain the ability of the response to be enhanced in the presence of postinhibitory activity and some other properties of it.A. N. Responses of neurons in the superior colliculi and visual cortex of rabbits to a black and white boundary moving in different directions were investigated. Neurons responding clearly to presentation of the black and white boundary moving in one direction (movement in the opposite direction led to inhibition of spontaneous activity) and neurons giving well-defined maximal responses to movement of this boundary in 2 or 3 directions were found in the superior colliculi. Neurons with a marked maximal response to the stimulus moving in 1 or 2 directions were found in the visual cortex. Nembutal has a powerful effect on the quantitative detector properties of visual cortical neurons and sometimes may completely inhibit unit activity.V. Kapsukas Vilnius State University. Responses of 93 neurons to isolated presentation of a single click and a series of 10 clicks with following frequency of 1000 Hz and responses of 66 neurons after the click had become a positive conditioned stimulus, and a series of 10 clicks had become a differential, negative stimulus, were investigated in chronic experiments on cats. Formation and realization of differential inhibition of an instrumental food reflex was shown not to lead to strengthening of inhibition in the auditory cortex, and the process of differential inhibition itself within the primary auditory cortex is not essentially an inhibitory process. Identical changes were found in responses of auditory cortical neurons to both positive and negative conditioned stimuli after training, evidence that neurons of the primary auditory cortex play a similar role in realization of the instrumental reflex and in its differential inhibition. It is suggested that the presence of groups of neurons responding by excitation or inhibition only to presentation of a stimulus with definite informative value is of great importance for differentiation.A. Spike responses of the sensorimotor cortex neurons were studied in chronic experiments on cats trained to perform an operant reflex, a placing movement triggered by application of the distant stimuli. The responses recorded under conditions of differentiation of sound tones of various frequencies and of a heteromodal complex (light + tone) from its components were compared. The responses recorded from 125 neurons in 3 animals were analyzed. No neurons selectively responding either to monomodal or to heteromodal signals were found. Forty-five cells responded to positive signals by excitation or inhibition, irrespective of the signal modality. The shortest latencies of these responses were 30 and 40 msec, respectively. When inhibitory stimuli were applied, these neurons either generated much weaker responses, or did not respond at all. A correlation was found between the level of response depression and the level of differentiation of the signals by an animal. These findings allow us to hypothesize that the sensorimotor cortex does participate in differentiation of sensory signals, providing preparation for switching on the motor response after a positive stimulus or suppression of such a response after a negative one.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophysiology, Vol. 26, No. 4, pp. 251–261, July–August, 1994.  相似文献

In acute experiments on cats evoked potentials (EP) of the orbital cortex were recorded and the electrogenesis and functional purpose of individual components of associative responses (AR) were investigated. It was concluded that the initial negative fluctuation of the AR arises as a consequence of the physical propagation of potentials from the projection somatosensory cortex and the second, positive, component and the following negative component are the result of arrival of an afferent volley into the orbital cortex via specific thalamic nuclei. These two components are due to activation of neurons of the orbital cortex. The afterdischarge, which appears sometimes, develops under the effect of impulses arriving from nonspecific thalamic nuclei. It is shown that during the second, positive, phase of the AR, primarily afferent neurons are activated, and during the negative phase, efferent neurons of the orbital cortex. The afterdischarge, which complicates the negative phase of the AR, is due to inhibition of afferent neurons.N. I. Pirogov Medical Institute, Vinnitsa. The organization of receptive fields of neurons sensitive to orientation of visual stimuli was investigated in the squirrel visual cortex. Neurons with mutually inhibitory on- and off-areas of the receptive field, with partially and completely overlapping excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms, were distinguished. Neurons of the second group are most typical. They exhibit orientation selectivity within the excitatory area of the receptive field because, if the stimulus widens in the zero direction, perpendicular to the preferred direction, lateral inhibition is much stronger than if it widens in the preferred direction. Additional inhibitory areas (outside the excitatory area) potentiate this inhibition and increase selectivity. It is suggested that there is no strict separation of simple (with separate excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms in the receptive field) and complex (with overlapping of these mechanisms) neurons in the squirrel visual cortex.A. Analysis of postsynaptic unit responses in the visual center ofRana temporaria showed that optic nerve fibers with high and low conduction velocities usually converge on a single neuron of the tectum opticum (TO). In response to stimulation of the optic nerve a complex depolarization potential consisting of 3 (or possibly 4) EPSPs was recorded in one group of neurons; these EPSPs were probably generated through excitation of several groups of afferent fibers. Either an increase or a decrease in the EPSPs can be observed in the TO neurons in response to repetitive and paired stimulation of the optic nerve. Postsynaptic inhibitory responses of some TO neurons, probably of direct and recurrent origin, are discussed.M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. Electrical activity in the flexor nerve and focal potentials (FP) in the medial and lateral zones of the ventral horn (VH) of segments L6 and L7 of the spinal cord, evoked by excitation of the contralateral motor cortex, were recorded in delicate experiments on cats. These focal potentials were studied during inhibition of the flexor response that developed as a result of prior excitation of the ipsilateral cortex ("cortical inhibition"). During the inhibition the FP's of the medial zone (layer VIII, according to Rexed) were greatly increased, mainly in their negative components, their time-characteristics being altered. When the interval between excitations was 50 msec (in that case the inhibition was most pronounced) the medial FP's arose against a negative background, which was a late component of the previous activity evoked by conditioning excitation. The appearance of this late component was correlated with the development of inhibition of the cortical flexor response. At the same time a positive condition developed in the lateral zone, in the region of the nucleus biceps-semitendinosus, which indicated orientation in a lateral direction of the interneurons discharging in the medial zone at late periods after the conditioning excitation. Inhibition of the flexor response was accompanied by depression of the lateral FP's without change in their sign or in the time-structure of their components. It is suggested that cortical inhibition of the cortical flexor response arises at the interneuron level. The functional structure of that inhibitory pathway is discussed.I. P. Spatio-temporal interactions within complex receptive fields in the cat visual cortex were investigated by sequential presentation of two stationary stimuli. When two stimuli were presented in phase (on-on or off-off) in the order corresponding to preferred direction of movement, facilitation or weak inhibition of the response to the second stimulus was observed, whereas if it corresponded to zero direction of movement, the response was strongly inhibited. In the case of stimulation out of phase (on-off or off-on), in the order corresponding to the preferred direction of movement, considerable inhibition of the response to the second stimulus was observed, whereas in the opposite order, facilitation or weak inhibition was observed. The strength of interaction between different parts of the field depended on the distance between them and the duration of the interval between stimuli. Directional selectivity of "complex" neurons is thus ensured by asymmetry of spatio-temporal interactions between receptive field inputs of the same type. Interactions between inputs of different types, arising when a multiedge stimulus (bar, grating) can be used by the visual system to distinguish an object from the background and to assess changes in size of objects and the relative velocity of their movement.V. During heteromodal extraneous stimulation (ES), a large part of responding neurons of the thalamic reticular nucleus (RN) exhibit selectivity by responding with excitation to the stimulation of only one type of sensory input. To visual ES, 12 of 32 tested neurons responded; and 4 of 21 tested neurons responded to auditory ES. Response of neurons to ES diminished during the process of habituation to these stimuli; and after habituation was completed, the number of neurons responsive to the ES also diminished. Use of ES led to disappearance of high-frequency, grouped discharges in the responses of the RN neurons. Initial responses to ES and to the following conditioning stimulus (CS) appeared during external inhibition of the conditioned reflex (CR), but the later components of impulse responses that ordinarily accompany realized CR were suppressed in nearly one half of the studied neurons. We reach the conclusion that RN neurons participate in external inhibition of CR and in habituation to ES.A. A. Bogomolets Physiology Institute, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Kiev. Using the method of microelectrode (intracellular and extracellular) recording, the mechanism of inhibition following reflex discharge in interneurons of the lumbosacral section of the spinal cord of cats on activation of cutaneous and high-threshold muscle afferents was studied. It was shown that the postdischarge depression of the reflex responses 10–20 msec after the moment of activation of the neuron is due to afterprocesses in the same neuron and presynaptic pathways. The depression of spike potentials from the 20th to the 100th msec is produced by inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSP). During the development of IPSP the inhibition of spike potentials can be due to both a decrease of the depolarization of the postsynaptic membrane below the critical threshold and a decrease of sensitivity of the cell membrane to the depolarizing action of the excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP). At intervals between the stimuli of 30–100 msec the duration of EPSP after the first stimulus does not differ from that after the second stimulus. Hence, it is suggested that the presynaptic mechanisms do not play an essential part in this type of inhibition of interneurons. The inhibition following the excitation favors the formation of a discrete message to the neurons of higher orders.I. P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad. Unit responses of the rabbit visual cortex were investigated in relation to size of visual stimuli moving in their receptive field. With an increase in size of the stimulus in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement ("width" of the stimulus) an initial increase in the intensity of the unit response through spatial summation of excitory effects is followed by a decrease through lateral inhibition. This inhibition is observed between zones of the receptive field which behave as activating when tested by a stimulus of small size. Each neuron has its own "preferred" size of stimuli evoking its maximal activation. No direct correlation is found between the "preferred" stimulus size and the size of the receptive field. With a change in stimulus size in the direction of movement ("length" of the stimulus) the responses to stimuli of optimal size may be potentiated through mutual facilitation of the effects evoked by the leading and trailing edges of the stimulus and weakened in response to stimuli of large size. The selective behavior of the neurons with respect to stimulus size is intensified in the case of coordinated changes in their length and width. It is postulated that the series of neurons responding to stimuli of different "preferred" dimensions may constitute a system classifying stimuli by their size.A. N.
