Parasitism of the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.) by the staphylinid Aleochara bilineata Gyllenhal and the cynipid Trybliographa rapae Westwood was examined in a cabbage monoculture and a mixed stand of cabbage undersown with white clover. Number of overwintering cabbage root fly pupae per plant was consistently reduced in the mixed stand, and the incidence of plants attacked by cabbage root fly was either reduced or not different in the mixed stand compared to cabbage monoculture. For both parasitoids, the probability of D. radicum attacked plants having at least one parasitized pupa increased with density of cabbage root fly pupae around the plant. For A. bilineata, this positive relation between presence of parasitism and host density was consistently stronger in cabbage monoculture than in cabbage undersown with clover. Location of a host plant by T. rapae was not consistently affected by the presence of clover. D. radicum attacked plants situated in the cabbage and clover mixture were found by T. rapae as easily as in cabbage monoculture. Overall, the total risk of parasitism for a cabbage root fly pupa by A. bilineata was reduced in the mixed stand compared to the cabbage monoculture, whereas the risk of parasitism by T. rapae was not consistently affected by clover. For both parasitoids, intensity of parasitism showed a variable relationship with host density on individual plants attacked by the cabbage root fly. Overall, in spite of consistently lower total density of pupae in the mixed cabbage—clover than in cabbage monoculture, the density of unparasitized pupae was reduced by the presence of non-host plants only in two of the four experiments. The results emphasize the need to include not only herbivore and crop, but also other plant species as well as natural enemies when evaluating management methods.

This study evaluates the efficacy of Aleochara bilineata Gyll and Aleochara bipustulata L. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) as biological control agents against the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae). Biological and demographic characters are documented and comparisons made between the two species. The following results were obtained:(1) The reproductive potential and longevity of A. bipustulata females are significantly higher than those of A. bilineata. These differences are correlated with the biology and ecology of the hosts of both species.(2) Under laboratory conditions the rate of increase (rm) of both staphylinids species is significantly higher than that of the pest and their major competitor Trybliographa rapae West. (Hymenoptera:Figitidae). This may indicate that A. bilineata and A. bipustulata can be effective biological control agents.(3) Aleochara bilineata appears to be the most interesting biological control agent against D. radicum, because of its higher rate of increase, higher host specificity and host acceptance, and a development time which is well synchronised with that of its host. With its higher competitive ability, a population of A. bilineata may increase even if competition occurs. However, A. bipustulata presents interesting biocontrol characteristics, but the best strategy may be only to use the potential of its natural populations.

Host-stage selection by Trybliographa rapae Westwood (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) was studied in choice and no-choice experiments in the laboratory. The parasitoid was able to reproduce in first, second, and third instars of the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), but oviposition occurred more frequently in third instars when all three developmental stages were offered simultaneously. Oviposition in third instars increased the rate of development of offspring and their body size, but did not alter sex ratio. Results are discussed in the light of predictions made by the theory of optimal host acceptance.

The interaction betweenTrybliographa rapae andAleochara bilineata, 2 parasitoids of the cabbage root fly, is discussed. Larvae ofA. bilineata could not differentiate between cabbage root fly pupae containingT. rapae in its endoparasitic state and unparasitized pupae but could recognize pupae containingT. rapae once the latter had reached its ectoparasitic state. Attack byA. bilineata whileT. rapae was still in its endoparasitic state usually resulted in the staphylinid killing the eucoilid. IfT. rapae had reached the ectoparasitic state before the host pupa was attacked byA. bilineata larvae the eucoilid survived attack by the beetle larva. Multiparasitism, however, resulted in increased levels of mortality of both parasitoid populations.

Effects of 37 fungicides — several of which were mixtures — on adult females of the rove beetle,Aleochara bilineata, were investigated in the laboratory. The pesticides were tested in concentrations equivalent to the highest recommended dosages for practical use. Mortality, egg production and hatch of the eggs were recorded. Most fungicides had no serious effect on any of the parameters measured. Among the morpholine and dithiocarbamate fungicides, several had adverse effects on egg production and/or hatch of the eggs laid. Furthermore, chinomethionate and pyrazophos were found to be toxic at the dosages used. Results are compared to results obtained with other species of beneficial arthropods in the laboratory. The importance of including several species in the assessment of pesticide side effects as well as the importance of measuring sublethal effects are stressed.

The responses of gravid female cabbage root flies, Delia radicum (L.), to brassica odour and allylisothiocyanate (ANCS) presented in either a discrete plume or uniformly dispersed in air passing through a wind tunnel were investigated. Relatively fast, straight flights occurred in diffuse odour conditions, while in discrete plumes flights were slower with more frequent changes of direction.Flies maintained a constant ground speed and track angle over the straight legs of their flight tracks in two different wind speeds by changing air speed and course. As flies approached an odour source in a discrete plume ground speed was progressively decreased and frequency of turning increased but track angles remained constant. This was achieved by reducing air speed and course angle.Flies released at increasing distances from an odour source moved upwind towards it in a series of short flights, the number relating to distance. The results are discussed in the light of current theories of anemotactic odour source locations and a sequence of orientated behaviour for host plant finding is proposed.

An ethanolic extract of cabbage leaves (Brassica oleraceavar. capitata,Golden Acre)and derived fractions were tested on natural and surrogate leaves in order to study the oviposition behavior of the cabbage root fly Delia radicum(Diptera: Anthomyiidae). On surrogate plastic leaves coated with a thin layer of paraffin wax and treated with 0.1 gram leaf equivalent (gle) of an ethanolic raw cabbage extract, the females displayed the same sequence of behavioral patterns as on a natural host plant. The quantified oviposition behavior correlated well with the actual number of eggs laid. The extract-treated surrogate leaves received at least as many eggs as natural leaves with a similar surface area. Previous exposure to surrogate or natural leaves seemed not to induce a specific preference. The three fractions (hexane, butanol, and water) of the raw extract stimulated the oviposition behavior. This was taken as evidence for the presence of a multicomponent mixture or a chemical pattern in the cabbage leaves stimulating oviposition. At the tested concentration each fraction alone could stimulate in some individuals the complete behavior. No effect of volatile components of the raw extract could be detected. This is thought to be due to the extraction procedure, which limits the production of attractive, volatile compounds, such as isothiocyanates.

The effects of foliar form, colour and surface characteristics on the oviposition behaviour of the cabbage fly were investigated by presenting females with various leaf models made of paper. The models differed in shape, size, colour, surface coating, the presence of 3 dimensional folds and a stem. It was shown that in the presence of host leaf surface extracts physical factors can strongly influence oviposition behaviour. Females laid the most eggs around the base of bright green or yellow models having a stem, vertical folds and covered with a thin layer of paraffin. The vertical folds in the surface increased the chance of a behavioural transition from leaf run to stem run.

Flight tracks of female cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), in odourless air, and in difuse clouds and discrete plumes of the host-plant volatile allylisothiocyanate (ANCS), were investigated. In diffuse ANCS D. radicum flew upwind with a smaller mean straight leg track angle with respect to the wind than in odourless air. In discrete ANCS, a larger mean straight leg track angle and a larger range of track angles occurred than in diffuse odour. The frequency distribution of these angles may have been bi-modal. It is suggested that perceived changes in odour concentration may alter the flight track angle. This behaviour is compared to the odour-modulated anemotaxis of male moths locating pheromone sources.

Effects of 67 herbicides — several of which were mixtures — and plant growth regulators on adult females of the rove beetle,Aleochara bilineata, were investigated in the laboratory. The pesticides were tested in concentrations equivalent to the highest recommended dosages for practical use. Mortality, egg production and hatch of the eggs were measured. Most herbicides had no serious effect on any of the parameters recorded. Among the urea herbicides, however, several showed adverse effects on egg production and/or hatch of the eggs laid. The strongest effect was exerted by methabenzthiazuron that impeded hatch of the eggs completely. Bromoxynil, pyridate and haloxyfod reduced survival, egg production and/or egg hatch to some degree, while carbaryl, which is also used as a plant growth regulator, killed all the beetles immediately. The usefulness of dose-response-studies and the importance of measuring sublethal effects are stressed, and the choice of herbicides showing no toxic effects is recommended.

The entomogenous fungusStrongwellsea castrans was isolatedin vitro for the first time, by incubating conidia projected from infected cabbage root flies (Delia radicum) in a simple, semi-defined liquid medium comprising dextrose, yeast extract and lactalbumin hydrolysate buffered to pH 7. The fungus grew as long unitunicate hyphae. After transfer to a solid nutrient medium, multinucleate hyphal bodies were formed which developed a thick, laminated wall. Neither conidia nor resting spores developed in liquid or on solid media and the fungus survived successive sub-culturing only in liquid media. Using the API-ZYM system, tests on extracts on hyphae ofS. castrans were positive for 11 enzymes but there were no consistent differences in enzyme profiles betweenS. castrans and fungi of the related genusErynia.

The majority of studies exploring interactions between above- and below-ground biota have been focused on the effects of root-associated organisms on foliar herbivorous insects. This study examined the effects of foliar herbivory by Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) on the performance of the root herbivore Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) and its parasitoid Trybliographa rapae (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), mediated through a shared host plant Brassica nigra L. (Brassicaceae). In the presence of foliar herbivory, the survival of D. radicum and T. rapae decreased significantly by more than 50%. In addition, newly emerged adults of both root herbivores and parasitoids were significantly smaller on plants that had been exposed to foliar herbivory than on control plants. To determine what factor(s) may have accounted for the observed results, we examined the effects of foliar herbivory on root quantity and quality. No significant differences in root biomass were found between plants with and without shoot herbivore damage. Moreover, concentrations of nitrogen in root tissues were also unaffected by shoot damage by P. brassicae larvae. However, higher levels of indole glucosinolates were measured in roots of plants exposed to foliar herbivory, suggesting that the development of the root herbivore and its parasitoid may be, at least partly, negatively affected by increased levels of these allelochemicals in root tissues. Our results show that foliar herbivores can affect the development not only of root-feeding insects but also their natural enemies. We argue that such indirect interactions between above- and below-ground biota may play an important role in the structuring and functioning of communities.

The susceptibility of the predatory pentatomidPodisus maculiventris (Say) to the insect growth regulators (IGRs) diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen was investigated in the laboratory. Fifth-instar nymphs were exposed to formulated materials of each compound via direct contact, residual contact and ingestion. Diflubenzuron was harmless toP. maculiventris by direct and residual contact, but was highly toxic when ingested via drinking water. Pyriproxyfen caused severe deformities at ecdysis whatever the method of exposure. Exposure of fifth instars to sublethal concentrations (around LC10) of both compounds had no adverse effects on reproduction of emerging adults. The data suggest that the use of these IGRs in the integrated management of insect pests should be evaluated with caution.

Delia radicum (L. 1758) is a major pest of cabbage crops in northern Europe. Due to more constraining laws relating to insecticide use, new strategies to control this pest are urgently needed. Manipulating insect behavior through infochemicals is a promising approach. The recent identification of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) as a compound that both attracts the main predators of D. radicum and inhibits oviposition by the fly gives a challenging opportunity to develop such strategy. The aim of the present study was to confirm such potential of DMDS, in the field. Through the 8 weeks of the first egg laying peak of the fly we assessed, the potential of artificially increasing the levels of this molecule in the close vicinity of broccoli plants to 1/attract predators, 2/stimulate predatory activity and 3/limit damage done by the fly. Despite a lower number of D. radicum eggs as food resource, DMDS effectively increased predator catches in treated plots (119 Aleochara bilineata (Gyllenhal, 1810) caught in treated plot, while only 21 in control plots). However, damages done by the fly were of the same magnitude order in treated plots than in control ones. Number of D. radicum larvae and pupae recovered in plant roots were similar, despite the important decrease in eggs laid. This result, together with the observation that the numbers of eggs predated in artificial patches were lowered in the presence of the molecule, seems to indicate that increasing DMDS amounts disturbed the foraging activity of the fly predators. Consequences of these findings for the future of DMDS use in crop protection against D. radicum are discussed.

Bioassay procedures for the insect growth regulators diflubenzuron (a chitin synthetase inhibitor) and methoprene (a juvenile hormone mimic) were evaluated on the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say to determine the most sensitive larval stages and the effects of varying exposure periods. Sensitivity to diflubenzuron decreased gradually during instars I and II; instars III and IV were relatively insusceptible. Sensitivity to methoprene increased with larval age. Standard test procedures were devised for diflubenzuron involving continuous exposure from the early third instar and for methoprene as 6 h exposure during instar IV. Selection for ten generations of strains from Dar-es-Salaam which were multiresistant to insecticides increased the LC50 to diflubenzuron by 2.8-fold and increased the LC50 to methoprene by 3.9-fold. When compared to a standard susceptible strain from Colombo the resistance ratios of Dar-es-Salaam strains rose from 2.4 x to 6.6 x for diflubenzuron and from 6.1 x to 21.3 x for methoprene, with no significant effects detected on the pattern of cross-resistance. These results are discussed in relation to standardization of IGR testing and the need for integrated control programmes against Cx quinquefasciatus.

Topical application of halofenozide on adults of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata, and Aubeonymus mariaefranciscae (AMF) exhibited its effects in a different way in the two coleopterans. In CPB, the fecundity was strongly affected, whereas the main effect in AMF was a drastic decrease of the progeny survival. The rate of penetration of labeled halofenozide through the cuticle followed a similar pattern in CPB and AMF, whereas the rate of excretion was much more rapid in AMF. The extremely slow excretion of the product in CPB suggested that this fact must contribute to the prolonged action of halofenozide on fecundity at its highest dose of 20 μg per adult. Retention of halofenozide in the reproductive system of males of AMF and CPB was low, whereas high levels of radioactivity were recovered in females (ovaries + eggs). Comparing females of both coleopterans, CBP retained a higher amount than AMF. Moreover, treated CPB adults showed a rapid cessation of oviposition due to distorted ovaries, detrimental oocyte growth, and loss of oviposition due to the fact that yolk protein synthesis and/or incorporation into eggs was reduced. In AMF, the development of the progeny was strongly affected, and more than 80% of first‐instar larvae died after egg hatching in the first 25 days after the treatment, due to premature molting and inhibition of ecdysis. Cross sections of intoxicated first larval instars of AMF originating from adults that were topically treated with halofenozide showed the presence of a double cuticle and these larvae could not shed the old cuticle. The oviposition deterrent properties of pine oil (Norpine 65, Northwest Petrochemicals, Anacortes, Washington) for the onion maggot, Delia antiqua (Meigen), were verified using a two-choice bioassay with onion oil as an attractive control. The principal deterrent property of this pine oil was found to reside in three monoterpenes, 3-carene, limonene, and p-cymene, which were the primary constituents identified in the most deterrent of two fractions made by preparative gas chromatography of steam-distilled pine oil. At release rates of 220, 320 and 320 g per 24 h in two-choice bioassays these monoterpenes respectively caused 73.2, 65.4 and 56.3% deterrency of oviposition, while the ternary mixture released at 320 g per 24 h caused 88.6% deterrency. The ternary mixture also caused 62.5% deterrency in a no-choice bioassay. Of eight other monoterpenes tested, myrcene, -phellandrene, -terpinene, -phellandrene, -terpinene, terpinolene, and -pinene were significantly deterrent in declining order, while -pinene was inactive. The ternary mixture was released from glass capillary tubes or flexible plastic cylinders in further bioassays that challenged caged females to oviposit around the base of 35 potted onion seedlings with release devices placed on the soil surface. The most effective deterrency (85.3%) was achieved at a release rate of 280 g per 24 h per pot if plastic cylinder devices were deployed 24 h before the treated pot was exposed to D. antiqua females. If female D. antiqua were given only a treated pot, deterrency of oviposition on potted onion seedlings was significant, but low (11.7–63.2%). Because of incomplete efficacy, a monoterpene-based deterrent formulation would be best used operationally if combined with other deterrents, or if it were integrated with some other tactic.

The cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), was deterred from laying eggs on cauliflower plants that had been sprayed with a suspension of the frass of caterpillars of the garden pebble moth, Evergestis forficalis (L.). Polar extracts of the frass deterred oviposition irrespective of the cruciferous plant species on which the caterpillars had been feeding. Non-polar extracts of the frass had no effect. Spraying plants with macerates from Brassica leaves stimulated fly oviposition whereas spraying plants with macerates from garlic mustard leaves deterred fly oviposition. Macerates from the leaves of all other plants tested had no effect. In field experiments the deterrent effect persisted 2–3 days after leaves were sprayed with frass extracts. Plants infested with feeding caterpillars and contaminated with only a few discrete frass pellets were as deterrent to the fly as those sprayed with frass suspensions.

Transport and retention of the insect growth regulators (IGRs) diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen in larvae of the beet armywormSpodoptera exigua (Hübner) and in nymphs of the predatory bugPodisus maculiventris (Say) were investigated. In a first experiment, the retention of orally administered [14C]radiolabeled isotopes of both compounds in fifth-instar larvae of the beet armyworm was studied. Rate of excretion of both IGRs inS. exigua caterpillars was high, with a 50% excretion time of approximately 6 h after intake. In a second experiment, the transport of the compounds from prey to predator and their retention inside the predator were studied. Fifthinstar nymphs ofP. maculiventris were allowed to feed on caterpillars that had been given contaminated food. For both diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen, more than 80% of the amount of radiolabel applied was recovered in consumed prey. Low levels of radioactivity (c. 3% of the applied amount of radiolabel) were also found in the fluid regurgitated by the prey larvae when attacked by the predatory bugs. Relatively small amounts of radiolabel (c. 8 and 15% of the amount orally applied to the prey for diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen, respectively) were ingested byP. maculiventris nymphs when feeding on beet armyworm caterpillars. The data suggest that the predators did not use gut content as food. The pattern of excretion in nymphs ofP. maculiventris differed between compounds. For diflubenzuron, there was a drastic decrease of radioactivity inside the predator body of around 40% within the first 6 h and then the level of retained radiolabel remained stable at 3–4% up to 72 h. For pyriproxyfen, a slow decrease of radioactivity inside the body was observed and at 72 h only 2% of the applied quantity was detected. Results of this study are discussed in relation to the findings from previous studies on the toxicity of both IGRs toP. maculiventris.
