Evaluation of mean skin temperature formulas by infrared thermography   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
 To study the reliabiliity of formulas for calculating mean skin temperature (T sk), values were computed by 18 different techniques and were compared with the mean of 10,841 skin temperatures measured by infrared thermography. One hundred whole-body infrared thermograms were scanned in ten resting males while changing the air temperature from 40° C to 4° C. Local, regional average and mean skin temperatures were obtained using an image processing system. The agreement frequency, defined as the percentage of the calculated T sk values which agreed with the corresponding infrared thermographic T sk within ±0.2° C, ranged for with the various formulas from 7% to 80%. In many sites, the local skin temperature did not coincide with the regional average skin temperature. When the local skin temperatures which showed the highest percentage similarity to the regional average skin temperature within ±0.4° C were applied to the formula, the agreement frequency was markedly improved for all formulas. However, the agreement frequency was not affected by changing the weighting factors from specific constants to individually measured values of regional surface area. By applying the physiologically reliable accuracy range of ±0.2° C in the moderate and ±0.4° C in the cool condition, agreement frequencies of at least 95% were observed in formulas involving seven or more skin temperature measurement sites, including the hand and foot. We conclude that calculation of a reliable mean skin temperature must involve more than seven skin temperature measurement sites regardless of ambient temperature. This paper presents a new approach, in applying the Pierce two-node model, to predict local skin temperatures of individual body parts with good accuracy. In this study, local skin temperature measurements at 24 sites on the bodies of 11 human subjects were carried out in a controlled environment under three different indoor conditions (i.e. neutral, warm and cold). The neutral condition measurements were used to adjust the local skin set-points in the model for each body part. Additional modifications to the calculation algorithm were introduced corresponding to different body parts. The local core set-points were then calculated, using a line search method, as the input values that allow the model to predict the skin temperatures with maximum deviation of ±0.1°C for the neutral condition. The model predictability was verified for the other two indoor conditions, and the results show that the modified model predicts local skin temperatures with average deviation of ±0.3°C.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of niacin and dietary concentrate proportion on body temperature, ruminal pH and milk production of dairy cows. In a 2 × 2 factorial design, 20 primiparous Holstein cows (179 ± 12 days in milk) were assigned to four dietary treatments aimed to receive either 0 or 24 g niacin and 30% (low) or 60% (high) concentrate with the rest being a partial mixed ration (PMR) composed of 60% corn and 40% grass silage (on dry matter basis). Ambient temperature and relative humidity were determined and combined by the calculation of temperature humidity index. Respiration rates, rectal, skin and subcutaneous temperatures were measured. Milk production and composition were determined. Ruminal pH and temperature were recorded at a frequency of 5 min using wireless devices for continuous intra-ruminal measurement (boluses). pH values were corrected for pH sensor drift. The climatic conditions varied considerably but temporarily indicated mild heat stress. Niacin did not affect skin, rectal and subcutaneous temperatures but tended to increase respiration rates. High concentrate reduced skin temperatures at rump, thigh and neck by 0.1–0.3°C. Due to the technical disturbances, not all bolus data could be subjected to statistical evaluation. However, both niacin and high concentrate influenced mean ruminal pH. High concentrate increased the time spent with a pH below 5.6 and ruminal temperatures (0.2–0.3°C). Niacin and high concentrate enhanced milk, protein and lactose yield but reduced milk fat and protein content. Milk fat yield was slightly reduced by high concentrate but increased due to niacin supplementation. In conclusion, niacin did not affect body temperature but stimulated milk performance. High concentrate partially influenced body temperatures and had beneficial effects on milk production.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of whole body cryotherapy (WBC) on a range of thermoregulatory measures. We also sought to examine the influence of sex and body composition. A convenience sample of 18 healthy participants (10 males and 8 females) (27±6 yr) volunteered for this study. Temperature (core, tympanic, skin and mean body), heart rate, blood pressure, and thermal comfort and sensation were recorded pre- and post- (immediately and every 5 min until 35 min post) exposure to a single bout of WBC (30 s at −60 °C, 150 s at 110 °C). Anthropometric data (height, weight, body surface area, body mass index, fat mass and fat free mass) were also recorded. No significant differences in temperature (core, tympanic, skin and mean body), heart rate, blood pressure, or thermal comfort / sensation were observed between male and females at baseline. Immediately post WBC mean body (male:31.9±0.8 °C; female:31.0±0.9 °C; ∆ mean body temperature:0.9±0.1 °C; P≤0.05, d=0.64) and mean skin (male:22.1±2.2 °C; female:19.6±2.8 °C; ∆ mean skin temperature:−2.5±0.6 °C; d=0.99, P≤0.05) temperature was significantly different between sexes. Sex differences were also observed in regional skin temperature (male thigh, 20.8±1.1 °C; female thigh, 16.7±1.1 °C, ∆ mean thigh skin temperature:−4.1 °C; d=3.72; male calf, 20.5±1.1 °C; female calf, 18.2±1 °C, ∆ mean calf skin temperature:−2.3±0.1 °C; d=3.61; male arm, 21.7±1 °C; female arm, 19±0.4 °C, ∆ mean arm skin temperature: −2.7±0.3 °C; d=3.54; P≤0.05). Mean arterial pressure was significantly different over time (P≤0.001) and between sexes (male 0 mins:94±10 mmHg; female 0 mins:85±7 mmHg; male 35 mins:88±7 mmHg; female 35 mins:80±6 mmHg; P≤0.05). Combined data set indicated a strong negative relationship between skin temperature and body fat percentage 35 min’ post WBC (r=−0.749, P≤0.001) and for core temperature and body mass index in males only (r=0.726, P≤0.05) immediately after WBC. There were no significant differences between sexes in any other variables (heart rate, tympanic and perceptual variables). We observed sex differences in mean skin and mean body temperature following exposure to whole body cryotherapy. In an attempt to optimise treatment, these differences should be taken into account if whole body cryotherapy is prescribed.  相似文献

The measurement of core body temperature is an efficient method for monitoring heat stress amongst workers in hot conditions. However, invasive measurement of core body temperature (e.g. rectal, intestinal, oesophageal temperature) is impractical for such applications. Therefore, the aim of this study was to define relevant non-invasive measures to predict core body temperature under various conditions. We conducted two human subject studies with different experimental protocols, different environmental temperatures (10 °C, 30 °C) and different subjects. In both studies the same non-invasive measurement methods (skin temperature, skin heat flux, heart rate) were applied. A principle component analysis was conducted to extract independent factors, which were then used in a linear regression model. We identified six parameters (three skin temperatures, two skin heat fluxes and heart rate), which were included for the calculation of two factors. The predictive value of these factors for core body temperature was evaluated by a multiple regression analysis. The calculated root mean square deviation (rmsd) was in the range from 0.28 °C to 0.34 °C for all environmental conditions. These errors are similar to previous models using non-invasive measures to predict core body temperature. The results from this study illustrate that multiple physiological parameters (e.g. skin temperature and skin heat fluxes) are needed to predict core body temperature. In addition, the physiological measurements chosen in this study and the algorithm defined in this work are potentially applicable as real-time core body temperature monitoring to assess health risk in broad range of working conditions.  相似文献

The cardiovascular, autonomic and thermal response to whole-body cryostimulation exposure are not completely known. Thus the aim of this study was to evaluate objectively and noninvasively autonomic and thermal reactions observed after short exposure to very low temperatures. We examined 25 healthy men with mean age 30.1±3.7 years and comparable anthropomorphical characteristic. Each subject was exposed to cryotherapeutic temperatures in a cryogenic chamber for 3 min (approx. −120 °C). The cardiovascular and autonomic parameters were measured noninvasively with Task Force® Monitor. The changes in core body temperature were determined with the Vital Sense® telemetric measurement system. Results show that 3 min to cryotherapeutic temperatures causes significant changes in autonomic balance which are induced by peripheral and central blood volume changes. Cryostimulation also induced changes in core body temperature, maximum drop of core temperature was observed 50–60 min after the stimulation. Autonomic and thermal reactions to cryostimulation were observed up to 6 h after the exposure and were not harmful for examined subjects.  相似文献

These experiments were designed to investigate the effects of sub-resonant microwave (MW) exposure (350 MHz, E orientation, average power density 38 mW/cm2, average whole-body specific absorption rate 13.2 W/kg) on selected physiological parameters. The increase in peripheral body temperature during 350 MHz exposure was greater than that in earlier experiments performed at 700 MHz (resonance). Heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure were significantly elevated during a 1 °C increase in colonic temperature due to 350 MHz exposure; respiratory rate showed no significant change. The results are consistent with other investigators' reports comparing sub-resonance exposures with those at resonance and above. The aim of this study was to explore whether, during the course of a 15 days-lasting experiment, a two hours per day and five days per week, 2.45 GHz microwave whole-body irradiation may substantially and therefore provably affect rats’ nocturnal urinary 6-hydroxy-melatonin sulphate (aMT6s) excretion and urinalysis parameters. The average whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) equalled to 1.25 (± 0.36 SE) W/kg. To collect nocturnal urine samples, animals were held in individual metabolic cages every experimental night from 7:00 PM till 7:00 AM next day. The concentration of aMT6s in rat urine samples was determined by a direct radioimmunoassay. Bilirubin, ketones, and urine protein content have been determined via multiple-use reagent strips. In comparison to the sham-exposed group, no significant changes in body temperature and food or water intake were observed in the exposed group. A decline in aMT6s, determined in the exposed rats, was observed from day 8 to day 11 of the experiment (P < 0.05). The aMT6s level remained consistently low until the end of the experiment, but not significantly lower than the control values. The results of the urine samples biochemical workup failed to reveal any significant differences between the exposed and the control animal groups. The results of this study suggest that, under the above described experimental conditions, repeated 2.45 GHz irradiation could act as a stressor and therefore influence the melatonine balance in rat.  相似文献

To date, hypothermia has focused on improving rates of resuscitation to increase survival in patients sustaining cardiac arrest (CA). Towards this end, the role of body temperature in neuronal damage or death during CA needs to be determined. However, few studies have investigated the effect of regional temperature variation on survival rate and neurological outcomes. In this study, adult male rats (12 week-old) were used under the following four conditions: (i) whole-body normothermia (37 ± 0.5 °C) plus (+) no asphyxial CA, (ii) whole-body normothermia + CA, (iii) whole-body hypothermia (33 ± 0.5 °C)+CA, (iv) body hypothermia/brain normothermia + CA, and (v) brain hypothermia/body normothermia + CA. The survival rate after resuscitation was significantly elevated in groups exposed to whole-body hypothermia plus CA and body hypothermia/brain normothermia plus CA, but not in groups exposed to whole-body normothermia combined with CA and brain hypothermia/body normothermia plus CA. However, the group exposed to hypothermia/brain normothermia combined with CA exhibited higher neuroprotective effects against asphyxial CA injury, i.e. improved neurological deficit and neuronal death in the hippocampus compared with those involving whole-body normothermia combined with CA. In addition, neurological deficit and neuronal death in the group of rat exposed to brain hypothermia/body normothermia and CA were similar to those in the rats subjected to whole-body normothermia and CA. In brief, only brain hypothermia during CA was not associated with effective survival rate, neurological function or neuronal protection compared with those under body (but not brain) hypothermia during CA. Our present study suggests that regional temperature in patients during CA significantly affects the outcomes associated with survival rate and neurological recovery.  相似文献

The therapeutic application of whole-body hyperthermia, whereby the body temperature is for a short time raised to 43–44°C is currently considered quite promising. However, body temperature above 42°C also raises the risks associated with hemodynamic instability and arrhythmia. A model of heat transfer is built to improve the efficacy and safety of the immersion-convection technique of whole-body hyperthermia. The model takes into account the changes in skin blood flow and the dynamics of heart rate depending on body temperature. It adequately reflects the processes of heating in the organism and can be used to calculate the heat distribution in the body.  相似文献

We analysed reaction norms of pigmentation (thorax and abdomen) according to growth temperature for 20 isofemale lines collected near Delhi (India) and compared them to results obtained for two French populations. The climatic conditions of the two locations were strongly different, with monthly average temperature ranging between 4.2°C and 20.5°C in France and between 14.3°C and 34.3°C in India. For each segment, a decrease of the pigmentation was observed with increasing temperature and the shapes of the reaction norms were more or less parallel. On average Indian flies were lighter than French ones, in agreement with the thermal budget hypothesis. We further investigated the shapes of reaction norms by polynomial adjustment and observed significant differences. In several cases, a maximum divergence was observed at high temperature, implying a change in the shape of the norm. Characteristic values related to the thermal reactivity were also significantly different between populations but no general tendency was found. Genetic variability, estimated by the coefficient of intraclass correlation, was significantly lower in India (0.27 ±0.026) than in France (0.39 ±0.028), and we discuss the significance of this difference.  相似文献

Oestrus and ovulation were recorded for eight oestrous cycles after sheep and goats were put onto maintenance or supramaintenance levels of nutrition. Oestrous cycles were longer and more variable in goats than in sheep (20.3 ± 0.3 and 17.4 ± 0.2 days respectively), but in neither species was the incidence of oestrus affected by level of nutrition. There were no significant differences between sheep and goats in average body weight or mean ovulation rate. Animals fed at a maintenance level showed no significant changes in average body weight (19.0 ± 0.3 kg) or mean ovulation rate (1.69 ± 0.01). At the supramaintenance level, on the other hand, mean body weight increased progressively to a maximum of 24.8 ± 0.5 kg, and mean ovulation rate increased to a maximum of 2.65 at the sixth oestrus after the beginning of supramaintenance feeding. The effect of supramaintenance feeding on ovulation rate was reflected in subsequent lamb and kid production.  相似文献

Treatment with defocused CO2 laser can have a therapeutic effect on equine injuries, but the mechanisms involved are unclear. A recent study has shown that laser causes an increase in equine superficial tissue temperature, which may result in an increase in blood perfusion and a stimulating effect on tissue regeneration. However, no studies have described the effects on equine tissue perfusion. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of defocused CO2 laser on blood perfusion and to correlate it with temperature in skin and underlying muscle in anaesthetized horses. Differences between clipped and unclipped haircoat were also assessed. Eight horses and two controls received CO2 laser treatment (91 J/cm2) in a randomised order, on a clipped and unclipped area of the hamstring muscles, respectively. The significant increase in clipped skin perfusion and temperature was on average 146.3 ± 33.4 perfusion units (334%) and 5.5 ± 1.5°C, respectively. The significant increase in perfusion and temperature in unclipped skin were 80.6 ± 20.4 perfusion units (264%) and 4.8 ± 1.4°C. No significant changes were seen in muscle perfusion or temperature. In conclusion, treatment with defocused CO2 laser causes a significant increase in skin perfusion, which is correlated to an increase in skin temperature.  相似文献

Uranium mine workers are exposed to ore dust containing uranium and its daughter products during different mining operations. These radionuclides may pose inhalation hazards to workers during the course of their occupation. The most significant among these radionuclides is 226Ra. The measurement of radium body burden of uranium mine workers is important to assess their internal exposure. For this purpose, the radon-in-breath measurement technique has been used in the present paper. Workers at the Jaduguda mine, India, associated with different categories of mining operations were monitored between 2001 and 2007. The measurement results indicate that workers—depending on mining operation category—show 226Ra body burdens ranging from 0.15 to 2.85 kBq. The maximum body burden was found for workers associated with timbering operations, with an average 226Ra body burden of 0.85 ± 0.54 kBq. Overall, the average value observed for 800 workers was 0.76 ± 0.51 kBq, which gives rise to an average effective dose of 1.67 mSv per year for inhalation and 0.21 mSv per year for ingestion.  相似文献

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) involves exposing minimally dressed participants to very cold air (injecting liquid nitrogen with temperature −195 °C), either in a specially designed chamber (cryo-chamber) or cabin (cryo-cabin), for a short period of time. The aim of this study was to examine the actual temperature of the air in the cryo-cabin at different locations throughout the cabin by using human subjects and a manikin. Additionally, we monitored skin temperature before and for 60 min after the cryo-cabin session. Twelve subjects completed one 3 min cryo-cabin session. Temperature next to the skin was assessed during the session, while the skin temperature was monitored before, 3 min after and every 10 min for 60 min after completing the session. There was a statistically significant interaction (time×position) for temperature among the different body parts during the WBC, and for skin temperature among different body parts after the cryo-cabin session. Statistically significant time effects during and following cryo-cabin session were present for all body parts. We showed that actual temperature in the cryo-cabin is substantially different from the one reported by the manufacturer. Thermal response after cryo-cabin session is similar to response observed after cryo-chamber cold exposure reported in previously published studies. This could be of great practical value as cryo-cabins are less expensive and easier to use compared to cryo-chambers.  相似文献

Riboflavin-binding protein, a transport protein occurring in egg whites, binds riboflavin tightly at pH values above 4.5 but releases it readily at pH values below 4.0. Structural aspects of this biologically important binding were studied by several methods. Analysis of sedimentation equilibrium data gave an average molecular weight of 32,500 ± 1000 for all forms of the protein and showed the absence of changes in quaternary structure when riboflavin was bound at neutral pH or released at pH 3.7. Sedimentation velocity showed no change in tertiary structure on binding at pH 7.0 but revealed a significant change in sedimentation constant at pH 3.7. While circular dichroism showed no appreciable change in secondary structure, it gave evidence of a marked change in the aromatic region at the lower pH. Small-angle X-ray scattering, going from the holoprotein at neutral pH to the apoprotein at low pH, showed a small but significant increase in radius of gyration (19.8 ± 0.2 vs 20.6 ± 0.1 Å) with slightly decreased anisotropy and with substantial increases in molecular volume (55,600 ± 530 vs 66,500 ± 240 Å3), surface (11,840 ± 120 vs 13,470 ± 140 Å), and hydration (0.27 ± 0.01 vs 0.38 ± 0.01 g H2O/g dry protein). Hydration values were obtained from small-angle X-ray scattering in two different ways for comparison with those calculated from sedimentation coefficients by way of frictional coefficients (derived from two different dimensionless ratios based independently on the structural small-angle X-ray scattering data). For either form of the protein, the surface calculated from an ellipsoidal model could account for only about 62% of the surface found experimentally. The excess surface was ascribed to topographic features of the molecule. Relative changes in this new parameter, together with the circular dichroism data and the known association of riboflavin binding with aromatic residues, suggested the opening of an aromatic-rich cleft concomitant with the release of riboflavin as a consequence of lowered pH.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate thermoregulatory responses to heat in tropical (Malaysian) and temperate (Japanese) natives, during 60 min of passive heating. Ten Japanese (mean ages: 20.8 ± 0.9 years) and ten Malaysian males (mean ages: 22.3 ± 1.6 years) with matched morphological characteristics and physical fitness participated in this study. Passive heating was induced through leg immersion in hot water (42°C) for 60 min under conditions of 28°C air temperature and 50% RH. Local sweat rate on the forehead and thigh were significantly lower in Malaysians during leg immersion, but no significant differences in total sweat rate were observed between Malaysians (86.3 ± 11.8 g m−2 h−1) and Japanese (83.2 ± 6.4  g m−2 h−1) after leg immersion. In addition, Malaysians displayed a smaller rise in rectal temperature (0.3 ± 0.1°C) than Japanese (0.7 ± 0.1°C) during leg immersion, with a greater increase in hand skin temperature. Skin blood flow was significantly lower on the forehead and forearm in Malaysians during leg immersion. No significant different in mean skin temperature during leg immersion was observed between the two groups. These findings indicated that regional differences in body sweating distribution might exist between Malaysians and Japanese during heat exposure, with more uniform distribution of local sweat rate over the whole body among tropical Malaysians. Altogether, Malaysians appear to display enhanced efficiency of thermal sweating and thermoregulatory responses in dissipating heat loss during heat loading. Thermoregulatory differences between tropical and temperate natives in this study can be interpreted as a result of heat adaptations to physiological function.  相似文献

Boran (n=15) and Nguni (n=15) cows were used in a study to determine the effect of breed, age and coat colour on the concentration of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90AB1), physiological rectal and skin temperature, and markers of health. The cows were exposed to summer heat stress and Boran cows had higher significant (P<0.05) skin temperature (35.1±0.42 °C) as compared to the Nguni cows (36.0±0.38 °C). Nguni cows had higher body thermal gradients than the Boran cows. Boran cows had thicker skin (P<0.05) and longer hairs (24.3±2.26 mm) than their Nguni counterparts (20.2±2.00 mm). The HSP90AB1 concentration was increased in Boran cows, although breed had no significant (P>0.05) influence. Significantly (P<0.05) high urea and total cholesterol was recorded in Boran cows. Coat colour had a significant (P<0.05) effect on the weight and rectal temperature of the study animals. Coat colour and age had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the concentration of HSP90AB1, although older cows (≥9 years) had higher concentrations (5.4±1.29 ng/ml). Age had a significant (P<0.05) effect on packed cell volume, neutrophil/lymphocyte, urea, total protein and gamma-glutamyl transferase whereas cows with ≥9 years had more concentrations than young ones. Age significantly (P<0.05) influenced hair length, skin temperature and the thermal gradients. Breed was positively correlated (P<0.001) to coat colour, age, body condition score, weight and temperature humidity index while negatively correlated to urea and total cholesterol. It was concluded that Nguni cows were more adaptable to hot environments than the Boran cows as the latter were unable to balance thermal load between their bodies and the environment.  相似文献
