The study compared the centre of pressure measurements (COP) and vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF) from a pressure insole system to that from force plates (FP) during two flywheel quadriceps resistance exercises: leg press and squat. The comparison was performed using a motion capture system and simultaneous measurements of COP and vGRF from FP and insoles. At lower insole-vGRF (<250 N/insole) COP accuracy deteriorated and those data were excluded from further analysis. The insoles systematically displaced the COP slightly posteriorly and medially compared to the FP measurements. Pearson’s coefficient of correlation (r) between insole- and FP-COP showed good agreement in both the anteroposterior (squat: r = 0.96, leg press: r = 0.97) and mediolateral direction (squat: r = 0.84, leg press: r = 0.90), whereas the root-mean-square errors (RMSE) were lower in the mediolateral (squat: 3.9 mm, leg press: 4.5 mm) than the anteroposterior (squat and leg press: 11.8 mm) direction. Vertical GRF was slightly overestimated by the insoles in leg press and RMSE were greater in leg press (8% of peak force) than in squat (6%). Overall, results were within the range of previous studies performed on gait. The strong agreement between insole and FP measurements indicates that insoles may replace FPs in field applications and biomechanical computations during resistance exercise, provided that the applied force is sufficient.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, with a worldwide incidence of 1% in individuals >60 years of age. Its primary characteristics include postural impairments and changes in circadian rhythms. The authors investigated the association between postural impairment and changes in circadian rhythms in 24 PD subjects diagnosed with stages 1 to 3 on the Hoehn-Yard (HY) scale and regularly used dopaminergic medication for at least 1 year (experimental group – EG) and 24 healthy elderly individuals without a history of neurological impairment as the control group (CG). Static balance tests using a force plate were performed, and activity/rest rhythm, according to the relative amplitude of L5 and M10 values, was monitored for seven consecutive days using actimetry. The results indicated differences in posturographic indicators of mediolateral displacement (ML) [EG, 4.71 ± 0.85 mm; CG, 2.79 ± 0.53 mm (p < .0001)] and anteroposterior displacement of the center of pressure (COP) [EG, 5.61 ± 2.43 mm; CG, 8.23 ± 1.72 mm (< 0.0001)], ML velocity of the COP [EG, 2.39 ± 0.83 mm/s; CG, 1.40 ± 0.18 mm/s (p < .0001)], and total distance of the COP in the tandem stance condition [EG, 227.6 ± 75 mm; CG, 53.4 ± 6.1 mm (p < .0001)] between the EG and CG. There was no correlation between relative amplitude and posturographic data for the EG. Postural impairments were verified in comparing the EG and CG; however, there was no association between posturographic indicators and activity/rest rhythm.  相似文献

COP1 (constitutive photomorphogenic 1, also known as RFWD2) is a p53-targeting E3 ubiquitin ligase containing RING-finger, coiled-coil, and WD40-repeat domains. Recent studies have identified that COP1 is overexpressed in several cancer types and that increased COP1 expression promotes cell proliferation, cell transformation, and tumor progression. In the present study, we investigated the expression and prognostic value of COP1 in primary gastric cancer. To investigate the role of the COP1 gene in primary gastric cancer pathogenesis, real-time quantitative PCR and western blotting were performed to examine COP1 expression in paired cancerous and matched adjacent noncancerous gastric tissues. The results revealed high COP1 mRNA (P=0.030) and protein (P=0.008) expression in most tumor-bearing tissues compared with the matched adjacent non-tumor tissues. The correlated protein expression analysis revealed a negative correlation between COP1 and p53 in gastric cancer samples (P=0.005, r=-0.572). Immunohistochemical staining of gastric cancer tissues from the same patient showed a high COP1 expression and a low p53 expression. To further investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic roles of COP1 expression, we performed immunohistochemical analysis of 401 paraffin-embedded gastric cancer tissue blocks. The data revealed that high COP1 expression was significantly correlated with T stage (P=0.030), M stage (P=0.048) and TNM stage (P=0.022). Consistent with these results, we found that high expression of COP1 was significantly correlated with poor survival in gastric cancer patients (P<0.001). Cox regression analyses showed that COP1 expression was an independent predictor of overall survival (P<0.001). Our data suggest that COP1 could play an important role in gastric cancer and might serve as a valuable prognostic marker and potential target for gene therapy in the treatment of gastric cancer.  相似文献

Previous experiments in which vitamin A has been administered to developing or regenerating limbs have shown that different limb axes are affected. In regenerating axolotl limbs, serial reduplications in the proximodistal axis are produced. In the developing chick limb bud, mirror-imaged reduplications in the anteroposterior axis are produced. Results reported here on Rana temporaria limb buds reveal that vitamin A causes both effects to occur. That is, limbs are both serially reduplicated in the proximodistal axis and mirror imaged in the anteroposterior axis. Time and concentration effects are explored and the significance of these results for our current understanding of axial organisation in limbs is discussed.  相似文献

Lower limb amputation substantially disrupts motor and proprioceptive function. People with lower limb amputation experience considerable impairments in walking ability, including increased fall risk. Understanding the biomechanical aspects of the gait of these patients is crucial in improving their gait function and their quality of life. In the present study, 9 persons with unilateral transtibial amputation and 13 able-bodied controls walked on a large treadmill in a Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN). While walking, subjects were either not perturbed, or were perturbed either by continuous mediolateral platform movements or by continuous mediolateral movements of the visual scene. Means and standard deviations of both step lengths and step widths increased significantly during both perturbation conditions (all p<0.001) for both groups. Measures of variability, local and orbital dynamic stability of trunk movements likewise exhibited large and highly significant increases during both perturbation conditions (all p<0.001) for both groups. Patients with amputation exhibited greater step width variability (p=0.01) and greater trunk movement variability (p=0.04) during platform perturbations, but did not exhibit greater local or orbital instability than healthy controls for either perturbation conditions. Our findings suggest that, in the absence of other co-morbidities, patients with unilateral transtibial amputation appear to retain sufficient sensory and motor function to maintain overall upper body stability during walking, even when substantially challenged. Additionally, these patients did not appear to rely more heavily on visual feedback to maintain trunk stability during these walking tasks.  相似文献

The preference for in-phase association of coupled cyclic limbs movements is well described (mirror-symmetrical patterns) and this is demonstrated by the ease of performing in-phase movements compared to anti-phase ones. The hypothesis of this study is that the easiest movement patterns are those with minor postural activity. The aim of this study was to describe postural activity in standing subjects in the sagittal and frontal planes during the execution of three upper limbs tasks (single arm, in-phase, anti-phase) at four different frequencies (from 0.6 to 1.2 Hz).We employed six infrared cameras for recording kinematics information, a force platform for measuring forces exerted on the ground, and a system for surface electromyography (SEMG). Outcome measures were: upper limb range of movement and relative-phase, centre of pressure displacement (COP), screw torque (Tz) exerted on the ground, and SEMG recordings of postural muscles (adductor longus, gluteus medius, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris). Our results show that in both the planes the in-phase task resulted in less COP displacement, torque production, and postural muscles involvement than the anti-phase and single arm tasks. This reduced need of postural control could explain the ease of performing in-phase coupled limb movements compared with anti-phase movements.  相似文献

It is difficult to separate an age-dependent fall in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE; N balance/N intake) in growing ruminants from a progressively decrease in animal protein requirements over time. This study examined the effect of dietary protein content on N partitioning, digestibility and N isotopic discrimination between the animal and its diet (Δ15Nanimal-diet) evaluated at two different fattening periods (early v. late). Twenty-four male Romane lambs (age: 19 ± 4.0 days; BW: 8.3 ± 1.39 kg) were equally allocated to three dietary CP treatments (15%, 17% and 20% CP on a DM basis). Lambs were reared with their mothers until weaning, thereafter housed in individual pens until slaughter (45 kg BW). During the post-weaning period, lambs were allocated twice (early fattening (30 days post-weaning) and late fattening (60 days post-weaning)) to metabolic cages for digestibility and N balance study. When diet CP content increased, the average daily gain of lambs increased (P < 0.05) while the age at slaughter decreased (P = 0.01), but no effect was observed on feed efficiency (P > 0.10). Diet CP content had limited effect on lamb carcass traits. Higher fibre digestibility was observed at the early v. late fattening period (P < 0.001). The N intake and the urinary N excretion increased when diet CP content increased (P < 0.001) and when shifting from early to late fattening period (P < 0.001). Faecal N excretion (P = 0.14) and N balance (P > 0.10) were not affected by diet CP content. Nitrogen digestibility increased (P < 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and on average it was greater at late v. early fattening period (P = 0.02). The NUE decreased (P = 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and as the lamb became older (P < 0.001). However, the age-dependent fall in NUE observed was lower at high v. low dietary CP content (CP × age interaction; P = 0.04). The Δ15Nanimal-diet was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with N intake (r = 0.59), excretion of faecal N (r = 0.41), urinary N (r = 0.69) and total manure N (r = 0.64), while negatively correlated with NUE (r = −0.57). Overall, the experiment showed NUE was lower in older lambs and when lambs were fed high diet CP content, and that Δ15Nanimal-diet was a useful indicator not only for NUE but also for urinary N excretion, which is a major environmental pollution factor on farm.  相似文献

Larger trunk and pelvic motions in persons with (vs. without) lower limb amputation during activities of daily living (ADLs) adversely affect the mechanical demands on the lower back. Building on evidence that such altered motions result in larger spinal loads during level-ground walking, here we characterize trunk-pelvic motions, trunk muscle forces, and resultant spinal loads among sixteen males with unilateral, transfemoral amputation (TFA) walking at a self-selected speed both up (“upslope”; 1.06 ± 0.14 m/s) and down (“downslope”; 0.98 ± 0.20 m/s) a 10-degree ramp. Tri-planar trunk and pelvic motions were obtained (and ranges-of-motion [ROM] computed) as inputs for a non-linear finite element model of the spine to estimate global and local muscle (i.e., trunk movers and stabilizers, respectively) forces, and resultant spinal loads. Sagittal- (p = 0.001), frontal- (p = 0.004), and transverse-plane (p < 0.001) trunk ROM, and peak mediolateral shear (p = 0.011) and local muscle forces (p = 0.010) were larger (respectively 45, 35, 98, 70, and 11%) in upslope vs. downslope walking. Peak anteroposterior shear (p = 0.33), compression (p = 0.28), and global muscle (p = 0.35) forces were similar between inclinations. Compared to previous reports of persons with TFA walking on level ground, 5–60% larger anteroposterior and mediolateral shear observed here (despite ∼0.25 m/s slower walking speeds) suggest greater mechanical demands on the low back in sloped walking, particularly upslope. Continued characterization of trunk motions and spinal loads during ADLs support the notion that repeated exposures to these larger-than-normal (i.e., vs. level-ground walking in TFA and uninjured cohorts) spinal loads contribute to an increased risk for low back injury following lower limb amputation.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to verify self-care guidelines together with lower limb home exercises alter ankle and foot plantar pressure and alignment in patient with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) measuring health and sociodemographic factors. The health factors analyzed were sensitivity and circulation aspects, risk rating, and neuropathy symptom score, ankle and foot alignment (photogrammetry), plantar pressures, and postural stability (baropodometry) before and after administering these guidelines and home exercises in 97 patients type 2 DM during 10 months. The self-care guidelines and exercises changed the forefoot alignment (Right Foot – Initial vs Final, p = 0.04; Left Foot, P<0.01), the center of the force displacement in the mediolateral (Right Foot - Initial versus Final, p = 0.02; Left Foot, P<0.01), and the anterior-posterior (Right foot - Initial versus Final, p = 0.01) direction, and body balance (Initial versus Final, p = 0.02). There was no change in the remaining assessed parameters. Self-care associated with the guidelines for home exercises for the lower limbs in patients with type 2 DM are effective in maintaining and improving the alignment of the feet, mediolateral stability and prevention of complications.

Despite walking with a wider step width, amputees remain 20% more likely to fall than non-amputees. Since mediolateral (ML) balance is critical for ambulation and contingent on ML foot placement, we used a ML disturbance to perturb walking balance and explore the influence of prosthetic foot stiffness on balance recovery. Ten transtibial amputees were fit with two commonly prescribed prosthetic feet with differing stiffness characteristics; 12 non-amputees also participated. A perturbation device that released an air burst just before heel strike imposed a repeatable medial or lateral disturbance in foot placement. After a medial disturbance, the first recovery step width was narrowed (p<0.0001) for the prosthetic limb (−103%), the sound limb (−51%) and non-amputees (−41%) and more than twice as variable. The ML inclination angle remained reduced (−109%) for the prosthetic limb, while the sound limb and non-amputees approached undisturbed levels (p<0.0004). Amputees required five steps to return to undisturbed step width after a prosthetic medial disturbance versus two steps for the sound limb and for non-amputees. After a lateral disturbance, the first recovery step was widened for the prosthetic limb (+82%), sound limb (+75%), and wider than non-amputees (+51%; p<0.0001), with all participants requiring three steps to return to undisturbed step width. Amputees also exhibited a similar upper torso response compared to the non-amputees for both disturbances. Prosthetic feet with different stiffness properties did not have a significant effect. In conclusion, amputee balance was particularly challenged by medial disturbances to the prosthetic limb implying a need for improved interventions that address these balance deficits.  相似文献

Regulatory peripheral vasoconstriction occurs in response to adoption of the erect posture. Mildly ischaemic limbs are thought to exhibit near normal responses, but patients with rest pain show increases in blood flow on limb dependency. Previous methods of limb blood flow quantification (xenon clearance and venous occlusion plethysmography) have inherent difficulties when applied in these situations. We studied orthostatic responses in 12 normal subjects (aged 22–74 years (median 52)) and 16 patients (aged 21–83 (median 48)) with mild and severe peripheral vascular disease, using a duplex flowmeter system. In the normal subjects changes in the 60s mean, common femoral artery volume flow values were as follows (mlmin−1 (1 SD)): 77 (83), − 78 (116) and − 190 (136), for elevation, dependency, and standing respectively. For claudicants (n = 7) the values were 18 (37), − 112 (123) and − 216 (103) respectively. In rest pain patients (n = 9) the responses were reversed, being − 252 (124), 131 (89) and 184 (85) respectively. Significant differences were apparent between elevation, dependency and standing flows in each of the three groups (P < 0.0001). Normal subject and claudicant responses on elevation and dependency differed significantly (P < 0.0001 and 0.03 respectively). On standing, the responses were similarly significantly different. The rest pain group displayed characteristically different responses compared with both normal subjects and claudicants for each postural change (P < 0.0001 in all cases). Duplex ultrasound volume flowmetry is non-invasive and offers an excellent method of quantifying physiological changes.  相似文献

Foot placement is critical to balance control during walking and is primarily controlled by muscle force generation. Although gluteus medius activity has been associated with mediolateral foot placement, how other muscles contribute to foot placement is not clear. Furthermore, although dynamic walking models have suggested that anteroposterior foot placement can be passively controlled, the extent to which muscles actively contribute to anteroposterior foot placement has not been determined. The objective of this study was to identify individual muscle contributions to mediolateral and anteroposterior foot placement during walking in healthy adults. Dynamic simulations of walking were developed for six older adults and a segmental power analysis was performed to determine the individual muscle contributions to the mediolateral and anteroposterior power delivered to the foot segment. The simulations revealed the ipsilateral swing limb gluteus medius, iliopsoas, rectus femoris and hamstrings and the contralateral stance limb gluteus medius and ankle plantarflexors were primary contributors to both mediolateral and anteroposterior foot placement. Muscle contributions to foot placement were found to be highly influenced by their contributions to pelvis power, which was dominated by those muscles crossing the hip joint. Thus, impaired balance control may be improved by focusing rehabilitation interventions on optimizing the coordination of those muscles crossing the hip joint and the ankle plantarflexors.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of rider weight in the BW ratio (BWR) range common for Icelandic horses (20% to 35%), on stride parameters in tölt in Icelandic horses. The kinematics of eight experienced Icelandic school horses were measured during an incremental exercise test using a high-speed camera (300 frames/s). Each horse performed five phases (642 m each) in tölt at a BWR between rider (including saddle) and horse starting at 20% (BWR20) and increasing to 25% (BWR25), 30% (BWR30), 35% (BWR35) and finally 20% (BWR20b) was repeated. One professional rider rode all horses and weight (lead) was added to saddle and rider as needed. For each phase, eight strides at speed of 5.5 m/s were analyzed for stride duration, stride frequency, stride length, duty factor (DF), lateral advanced placement, lateral advanced liftoff, unipedal support (UPS), bipedal support (BPS) and height of front leg action. Stride length became shorter (Y=2.73−0.004x; P<0.01) and more frequent (Y=2.56+0.002x; P<0.001) with added weight. Duty factor and BPS increased with increased BWR (P<0.001), whereas UPS decreased (P<0.001). Lateral advanced timing of limb placement and liftoff and height of front leg action were not affected by BWR (P>0.05). In conclusion, increased BWR decreased stride length and increased DF proportionally to the same extent in all limbs, whereas BPS increased at the expense of decreased UPS. These changes can be expected to decrease tölt quality when subjectively evaluated according to the breeding goals for the Icelandic horse. However, beat, symmetry and height of front leg lifting were not affected by BWR.  相似文献

Objective: This study investigated the characteristics of the adrenal limbs of primary aldosteronism (PA) patients and evaluated the value of the adrenal limb width measurement for the differentiation of unilateral PA from bilateral PA.Methods: A total of 122 PA patients (93 unilateral PA, ages ranged from 23 to 72 years; 29 bilateral PA, ages ranged from 30 to 68 years) who had undergone successful adrenal venous sampling (AVS) and adrenal gland computed tomography (CT) scan were retrospectively included. The maximum width of each adrenal gland limb (normal area on CT images) was measured, the left adrenal limb width to right adrenal limb width ratio (L/Rw) was calculated, and its potential value in the differentiation of unilateral PA and bilateral PA was analyzed. Results: The mean widths of the left adrenal limbs and the right adrenal limbs were 0.52 ± 0.10 cm and 0.43 ± 0.09 cm in unilateral PA patients, versus 0.52 ± 0.10 cm and 0.49 ± 0.12 cm in bilateral PA patients. The L/Rw ratio was 1.22 ± 0.24 in unilateral PA patients and 1.11 ± 0.23 in bilateral PA patients (P<.05). In the subgroup of PA patients over 55 years of age, compared with AVS, the sensitivity and specificity of the L/Rw ratio at 1.06 for subtype classification were 75% and 82%, respectively. Conclusion: A lower L/Rw ratio, referring to the ratio of the left adrenal limb width to the right adrenal limb width, may be a predictor of bilateral PA, especially in PA patients over 55 years of age.Abbreviations: APA = aldosterone-producing adenoma; AVS = adrenal venous sampling; BAH = bilateral adrenal hyperplasia; BMI = body mass index; CT = computed tomography; L/Rw = ratio of left adrenal limb width to right adrenal limb width; PA = primary aldosteronism  相似文献

Despite technically satisfactory surgery for acute lower limb ischaemia reperfusion injury may result in failure of limb salvage and the need for amputation. An animal model using the rat hind limb has been developed which demonstrates this complication. A tourniquet was applied to one hind limb for 6 h and then released. Gastrocnemius muscle blood flow in both hind limbs was assessed using radiolabelled microspheres and a perfusion index calculated between the revascularized and normal hind limbs and the results compared with similar measurements in control animals and rats with a tourniquet still in situ (ischaemic). Following 10 min the median perfusion index in reperfused animals was significantly less than that in control animals (0.12 ± 2 inter-quartile range 0.02–0.43) versus 1.05 (0.68–1.18), P < 0.01) but similar to the results in rats with a tourniquet still in situ [0.04 (0.00–0.07), ns], thus demonstrating low reflow following tourniquet release. After 120 min revascularization a phase of relative reperfusion occurred with perfusion indices becoming higher than those in animals with a tourniquet in situ (0.48 (0.11–0.70) versus 0.02 (0.01–0.07), P < 0.05) but remaining lower than those in control rats [0.97 (0.79–1.13), P < 0.05]. Finally after 240 min, reperfusion injury occurred with perfusion being similar to that in animals with a tourniquet applied [0.05 [0.01–0.38) versus 0.03 (0.00–0.07), ns] and less than that in the normal rats [1.01 (0.73–1.16), P < 0.01]. Attempts to modify these reductions in muscle perfusion pharmacologically have demonstrated that a superoxide radical scavenger (superoxide dismutase and catalase) abolished low reflow (0.94 (0.54–1.12) versus 0.12 (0.02–0.43), P < 0.01). In contrast dimethylthiourea, an hydroxyl radical scavenger, prevented the phase of relative reperfusion (0.04 (0.02–0.21) versus 0.48 (0.11–0.70), P < 0.01. Sodium nitroprusside, a vasodilator, increased perfusion at 240 min [0.41 (0.11–1.22] versus 0.05 (0.01–0.38], P < 0.05] with 6 out of 15 rats having a normal perfusion index at the time when reperfusion injury would be expected to occur.  相似文献

Background: Cardiac re synchronization therapy (CRT) has been reported to improve clinical status and survival, and shorten hospitalization rates, in patients with heart failure (HF). However, questions remain regarding the success of CRT in different subgroups of patients with HEObjective: We assessed whether CRT response was related to gender or age in patients with HE.Methods: In a longitudinal observational study, patients with severe HF (New York Heart Association [NYHA] class III or IV, left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF] ≤35%, and QRS duration >120 ms with left bundle branch block configuration) were enrolled. Clinical electrophysiologic and echocardiographic evaluations were performed before, and 3 and 6 months after, CRT implantation. Results: A total of 65 Iranian patients (50 men, 15 women; mean [SD] age, 60.3 [10.3] years; baseline NYHA class, 3.1 [0.36]; QRS duration, 144 [14] ms; LVEF, 21% [7.3%]; left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), 6.8 [0.56] mm) were evaluated. NYHA class, QRS duration, LVEF, and LVEDD were significantly improved at 3- and 6-month follow-ups both in patients aged ≤60 years and in those aged >60 years (P < 0.001, except for aged ≤60 years after 3-month follow-up [P = 0.002]). All these parameters were significantly improved in men at 3- and 6-month follow-ups (P < 0.001). NYHA class (P = 0.002), QRS duration (P = 0.001), LVEF (P = 0.013 at 3 months and <0.001 at 6 months), and LVEDD (P = 0.007 at 3 months and <0.001 at 6 months) also were significantly improved in women. At 3- and 6-month follow-ups, there were no significant differences in improvement of these factors between the 2 age groups of patients. Conclusion: CRT response in these patients with HF did not appear to be gender or age related at 3- and 6-month follow-ups in this small observational study. Confirmation of these findings by larger studies is needed.  相似文献

Impaired postural stability is associated with a variety of pathologies including sports-related concussion (SRC). Quantification of centre of pressure (COP) movement is the most common focus of instrumented assessment. Frequency-domain COP analyses have focused primarily on summary measures or pre-defined frequency bands but continuous analysis may provide novel and complementary insight into pathological control mechanisms. Our aims were (i) to compare post-SRC COP trajectory changes identified using clinician scores (Modified Balance Error Scoring System (M-BESS)), time-domain COP variables and continuous frequency spectral comparison; and (ii) to characterise frequency spectra changes. Male rugby players aged 15–19 years (n = 135) completed a pre-season baseline assessment comprising vision-obscured double-leg, single-leg and tandem stances on a force platform. Participants diagnosed with SRC during the season (n = 15) underwent repeat testing (median 4 days post-SRC; IQR 2.5–6.5). Baseline and post-SRC COP trajectories were compared using common time-domain COP variables, M-BESS scores and continuous frequency spectra. Post-SRC changes were identified using all three approaches. Spectral analysis revealed the largest effect size (Cliff’s delta 0.39) and was the only method to identify differences in all three stances and in double-leg stance. All post-SRC increases in spectral content were in the anteroposterior direction; all decreases were in the mediolateral direction. Changes were localised to higher frequencies (1.7–8 Hz) except for double-leg stance anteroposterior direction, for which increases were observed throughout the analysed range. Our findings suggest that this method of spectral comparison may provide a more responsive and meaningful measure of postural stability changes after SRC than other commonly-used variables.  相似文献

Severe feather-pecking (SFP) persists as a highly prevalent and detrimental behavioural problem in laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) worldwide. The present experiment investigated the association between feather-eating and plumage damage, a consequence of SFP, in groups of free-range, ISA Brown laying hens. Single feathers were placed on the floor of the home pens. Feathers were sourced from seven different birds. A total of 50 birds in six pens with extensive plumage damage were compared with birds in six control pens with little plumage damage at 41 to 43 weeks of age (n=12 pens, 600 hens). Birds in pens with extensive plumage damage ingested more feathers (F=8.1, DF=1, 8, P=0.02), and also showed shorter latencies to peck at (χ2=54.5, DF=1, P<0.001), and ingest feathers (χ2=55.6, DF=1, P<0.001). Birds ingested feathers from a bird in the free-range facility, in which the testing took place, more quickly than from a bird housed in a separate cage facility (χ2 = 39.0, DF=6, P<0.001). A second experiment investigated the predictive relationship between feather-eating and plumage damage. Feathers were presented to 16 pens of 50 pullets prior to the development of plumage damage, at 15 weeks of age, and then to the same hens after plumage damage had become prominent, at 40 weeks of age. Birds had a higher probability of ingesting feathers (F=142.0, DF=1, 231, P<0.001), pecked feathers more times (F=11.24, DF=1, 239, P<0.001), and also pecked (χ2 = 127.3, DF=1, P<0.001) and ingested (χ2=189.3, DF=1, P<0.001) the feathers more quickly at 40 than 15 weeks of age. There was a trend for an interaction, where birds pecked feathers from the rump more times than feathers from the back at 40 weeks of age (F=3.46, DF=1, 237, P=0.06). However, a lack of variability in plumage damage between pens in this experiment precluded investigation of the predictive relationship. The results from the present study confirm the association between feather-eating and plumage damage, and suggest that birds may prefer feathers from particular body areas and from particular hens. Future experiments should focus on elucidating whether feather-eating may act as a predictor of SFP.  相似文献

Breeding values for feed intake and feed efficiency in beef cattle are generally derived indoors on high-concentrate (HC) diets. Within temperate regions of north-western Europe, however, the majority of a growing beef animal’s lifetime dietary intake comes from grazed grass and grass silage. Using 97 growing beef cattle, the objective of the current study was to assess the repeatability of both feed intake and feed efficiency across 3 successive dietary test periods comprising grass silage plus concentrates (S+C), grazed grass (GRZ) and a HC diet. Individual DM intake (DMI), DMI/kg BW and feed efficiency-related parameters, residual feed intake (RFI) and gain to feed ratio (G : F) were assessed. There was a significant correlation for DMI between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.32; P < 0.01) as well as between the S+C and HC periods (r = 0.41; P < 0.001), whereas there was no association for DMI between the GRZ and HC periods. There was a significant correlation for DMI/kg BW between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.33; P < 0.01) and between the S+C and HC periods (r = 0.40; P < 0.001), but there was no association for the trait between the GRZ and HC periods. There was a significant correlation for RFI between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.25; P < 0.05) as well as between S+C and HC periods (r = 0.25; P < 0.05), whereas there was no association for RFI between the GRZ and HC periods. Gain to feed ratio was not correlated between any of the test periods. A secondary aspect of the study demonstrated that traits recorded in the GRZ period relating to grazing bite rate, the number of daily grazing bouts and ruminating bouts were associated with DMI (r = 0.28 to 0.42; P < 0.05 - 0.001), DMI/kg BW (r = 0.36 to 0.45; P < 0.01 - 0.001) and RFI (r = 0.31 to 0.42; P < 0.05 - 0.001). Additionally, the number of ruminating boli produced per day and per ruminating bout were associated with G : F (r = 0.28 and 0.26, respectively; P < 0.05). Results from this study demonstrate that evaluating animals for both feed intake and feed efficiency indoors on HC diets may not reflect their phenotypic performance when consuming conserved forage-based diets indoors or when grazing pasture.  相似文献

Background

Individuals with cerebral palsy have smaller muscle volumes normalised to body mass than their typically developing peers. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between lower limb muscle volume and body mass in young people with bilateral cerebral palsy and their typically developing peers.

Methods

Twenty-five participants with bilateral cerebral palsy (aged 14.7±3.0 years, GMFCS level I-III) and 25 of their typically developing peers (aged 16.8±3.3 years) took part in this study. None of the participants had undergone orthopaedic surgery, botulinum toxin injections, or serial casting in the previous year. All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging of both lower limbs. Nine major muscles of each lower limb were individually manually segmented and the muscle volumes calculated.

Results

Body mass and total lower limb muscle volume were significantly linearly related in both the cerebral palsy (R2 = 0.75, p<0.001) and typically developing (R2 = 0.77, p<0.001) groups. The slope of the relationship between muscle volume and body mass was significantly shallower in the cerebral palsy group compared to the typically developing group (p=0.007).

Conclusions

This cross-sectional study suggests that the increase in size of lower limb muscles relative to body mass is reduced in adolescents and young adults with cerebral palsy. Longitudinal studies are required to further investigate altered muscle growth trajectories in this group and their impact on long-term mobility.
