Carbon to chlorophyll a (C:Chl) ratios, assimilation numbers (A.N.) and turnover times of natural populations of individual species and taxonomic groups were extracted from a long-term database of phytoplankton wet-weight biomass, chlorophyll a concentrations, and primary production in Lake Kinneret, Israel. From a database spanning more than a decade, we selected data for samples dominated by a single species or taxonomic group. The overall average of C:Chl was highest for cyanophytes and lowest for diatoms, while chlorophytes and dinoflagellates showed intermediate values. When converting chlorophyll a to algal cellular carbon this variability should be taken into account. The variability in C:Chl within each phylum and species (when data were available) was high and the variability at any particular sampling date tended to be greater than the temporal variability. The average chlorophyll a-normalized rate of photosynthetic activity of cyanophytes was higher and that of the dinoflagellates lower than that of other phyla. Turnover time of phytoplankton, calculated using primary productivity data at the depth of maximal photosynthetic rate, was longest in dinoflagellates and shortest in cyanophytes, with diatoms and chlorophytes showing intermediate values. The more extreme C:Chl and turnover times of dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria in comparison with chlorophytes and diatoms should be taken into consideration when employed in ecological modeling.  相似文献

In the Nervion River estuary surface samples were taken from March to September 2003 at six sites covering most of the salinity range with the aim to know the biomass and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton assemblages in the different segments. Nine groups of algae including cyanobacteria, diatoms, dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, prasinophytes, euglenophytes, chrysophytes, haptophytes, raphidophytes and cryptophytes were identified by means of a combination of pigment analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and microscopic observations of live and preserved cells. Diatoms, chlorophytes and cryptophytes were the most abundant algae in terms of cells number, whereas fucoxanthin, peridinin, chlorophyll b (Chl b) and alloxanthin were the most abundant auxiliary pigments. Based on multiple regression analysis, in the outer estuary (stations 0, 1, 2 and 3) about 93% of the chlorophyll a (Chl a) could be explained by algae containing fucoxanthin and by algae containing Chl b, whereas in the rest of the estuary most of the Chl a (about 98%) was accounted for by fucoxanthin, Chl b and alloxanthin containing algae. The study period coincided with that of most active phytoplankton growth in the estuary and fucoxanthin was by far the dominant among those signature pigments. Several diatoms, chrysophytes, haptophytes and raphydophytes were responsible for fucoxanthin among identified species. Besides, dinoflagellates with a pigment pattern corresponding to chrysophytes and type 4 haptophytes were identified among fucoxanthin-bearing algae. Cryptophytes were the most abundant species among those containing alloxanthin. The maximum of Chl b registered at the seaward end in April coincided with a bloom of the prasinophytes Cymbomonas tetramitiformis, whereas the Chl b maxima in late spring and summer were accounted for by prasinophytes in the middle and outer estuary and by several species of chlorophytes in the middle and inner estuary. Other Chl b containing algae were euglenophytes and the dinoflagellate Peridinium chlorophorum. Dinoflagellates constituted generally a minor component of the phytoplankton.  相似文献

Summary A checklist of microalgae found in sea-ice in the East Siberian Sea in May 1987 has been compiled. A total of 122 taxa have been identified, consisting of 101 taxa in 18 genera of pennate diatoms, 14 taxa in 8 genera of centric diatoms, 4 taxa in 3 genera of dinoflagellates (including Ebria sp.), and 2 taxa in 1 genus of chrysophytes (silicoflagellates); choanoflagellates (Craspedomonadales) were found in one sample.  相似文献

Summary Chromadora macrolaimoides Steiner, a free-living nematode present in the aufwuchs assemblages of several marine macrophytes located in North Sea Harbor, Southampton, New York, was isolated from Enteromorpha intestinalis and established in laboratory culture, where its life history and feeding habits were studied. Under the experimental conditions (25 C and 26 S) the worm has an average generation time (22 days) and average life span (45 days) similar to other chromadorids which have been studied in the laboratory.Tracer-feeding experiment with 32P-labelled bacteria, diatoms and chlorophytes indicate selectivity by the worm in both the ingestion and apparent digestion of potential food organisms, with the diatoms and chlorophytes being the preferred foods. Out of a total of 20 species of algae and 14 species of bacteria, two species of diatoms (Nitzschia acicularis and Cylindrotheca closterium) were found which are capable of sustaining indefinite growth. Bacteria-free culture has not been established, however, due to the extreme sensitivity of the worm to antibioties.A comparison of the feeding habits of C. macrolaimoides with Rhabditis marina, another marine nematode fed the same potential food organisms is made, and the influence of selective feeding on the spatial and temporal distribution of marine nematodes is discussed.This work was supported by National Science Foundation Grant GB-19245Contribution No. 15 from the Institute of Oceanography, City University of New York  相似文献

Freshwater dinoflagellates have not previously been reported from Belize, although there has been extensive work with marine dinoflagellates and some work with other freshwater groups. Freshwater dinoflagellates are more frequently observed in standing water and none have been observed in the several streams and rivers sampled since 1990. The goal in 1998 was to examine water samples from small ponds within hours of collection to improve the chance of observing swimming dinoflagellates. A plankton net was used and whole water samples also were collected. A small brown water pond on a peninsula and 30m from the Caribbean yielded a bloom of Thompsodinium intermedium. Dinoflagellates, including Peridinium centenniale, Katodinium sp., and Peridinium sp. in the Umbonatum Group, were observed within “Crocodile pond” and “Lily pond” on the mainland.  相似文献

Deep Lake Tarn is a small pool in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, which freezes solid seasonally. When free water is present, rotifers, tardigrades, nematodes, protozoans and bacteria are active and are mainly associated with an algal mat composed of cyanophytes, chlorophytes chrysophytes and a pyrrophyte.Hypsibius arcticus (Murray) (Tardigrada) reached a maximum density of 470 individuals per g wet weight of algal mat and individuals took about three months to reach full size. A new species ofIsohypsibius was recorded and will be described elsewhere. Tardigrades overwintered in their cryptobiotic state. The population density of bdelloid rotifers changed cyclically, peaking at three-weekly intervals during summer. They also overwintered in their cryptobiotic state.Monogonont rotifers appeared only in summer and species succession occurred. They are thought to overwinter as resting eggs. Two bdelloid rotifers,Macrotrachela quadricornifera (Milne) andMniobia russeola (Zelinka) and one monogonont rotiferPtygura sp., are new records for continental Antarctica.  相似文献

The microphytobenthos colonizing the intertidal flats forms an important component of the Wadden Sea. Ten sampling points along a 1-km transect were studied in a fringe area of the Solthörn tidal flat, southern North Sea, in order to determine seasonal differences in the microphytobenthos. An accompanying paper deals with the major component of the flora, the diatoms; here we, focus on the minor taxonomic groups. From May 2008 to May 2009 surface sediments were collected during low tide. Variation of environmental factors as well as microphytobenthic density (abundance and chlorophyll a) were monitored. The area investigated was a mixed-sediment mudflat, with a gradient from coarse to fine. Highest biomass was obtained in summer 2008 with 215.9?±?12.6?mg chlorophyll a m–2. In late autumn the chlorophyll a concentration decreased continuously at all investigated stations. Lowest values were detected in December 2008. Species abundances varied considerably both along the transect and seasonally, depending on species-specific requirements as well as hydrodynamic conditions (tidal currents). Higher densities of benthic pro- and eukaryotic microalgae were observed in sites characterized by fine sediments. Apart from the diatoms, the most abundant microphytobenthic group was the cyanophytes. Coccoid cyanophytes, mainly Merismopedia sp., were most abundant during summer, with cell numbers up to 5.72?×?106 cells cm?2, while diatoms dominated in winter, spring and autumn. Filamentous cyanophytes, particularly Microcoleus chthonoplastes, were most abundant during autumn, while coccoid chlorophytes (spring: Chlorococcum submarinum, Crucigenia tetrapedia, Tetraselmis suecica), euglenophytes (summer: Euglena obtusa), dinophytes (autumn: Amphidinium operculatum, A. herdmanii) and cryptophytes (autumn: Hillea marina, Hemiselmis virescens) contributed to the microphytobenthos during warmer seasons. The statistical analysis confirmed that the composition of the microphytobenthos was related to sediment features and to characteristics of particular seasons.  相似文献

The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II was estimated from variable chlorophyll a fluorescence in samples of phytoplankton collected from the Taihu Lake in China to determine the responses of different phytoplankters to irradiance and vertical mixing. Meteorological and environmental variables were also monitored synchronously. The maximum quantum yield of three phytoplankton groups: cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, and diatoms/dinoflagellates, showed a similar diurnal change pattern. F v/F m decreased with a significant depth-dependent variation as irradiance increased during the morning and increased as irradiance declined in the afternoon. Furthermore, the rates of F v/F m depression were dependent upon the photon flux density, whereas the rates of recovery of F v/F m were dependent upon the historical photon density. Moreover, photoinhibition affected the instantaneous growth rates of phytoplankton. Although at noon cyanobacteria had a higher photoinhibition value (up to 41%) than chlorophytes (32%) and diatoms/dinoflagellates (34%) at the surface, no significant difference in diurnal growth rates among the three phytoplankton groups were observed indicating that cyanobacteria could photoacclimate better than chlorophytes and diatoms/dinoflagellates. In addition, cyanobacteria had a higher nonphotochemical quenching value than chlorophytes and diatoms/dinoflagellates at the surface at noon, which indicated that cyanobacteria were better at dissipating excess energy. The ratios of enclosed bottle samples F v/F m to free lake samples F v/F m showed different responses for the three phytoplankton groups to irradiance and vertical mixing when wind speed was approximately constant at about 3.0 m s−1. When wind speed was lower than 3.0 m s−1, cyanobacteria accumulated mainly at the surface and 0.3 m, because of their positive buoyancy, where diurnal growth rates of phytoplankton were relatively higher than those at 0.6 m and 0.9 m. Chlorophytes were homogenized completely by vertical mixing, while diatoms/dinoflagellates avoided active high irradiance by moving downward at noon, and then upward again when irradiance decreased. Selective grazing of a calanoid copepod Temora longicornis was measured during different stages of a Phaeocystis globosa bloom, in order to reveal (1) if T. longicornis feeds on single cells and/or colonies of P. globosa in the presence of alternative food sources, (2) if copepod food selection changes during the initiation, maintenance, collapse and decay of a P. globosa bloom and (3) if P. globosa dominated food assemblage provides a good diet for copepod egg production. Our results show low but constant feeding on small colonies of P. globosa, irrespective of the type or concentration of alternative food sources. In contrast, feeding on single cells was never significant, and the total contribution of P. globosa to carbon ingestion of T. longicornis was minor. T. longicornis fed most actively on the decaying colonies, whereas during the peak of the bloom copepods selected against P. globosa. Mostly, T. longicornis fed unselectively on different food particles: before the bloom, the major part of the diet consisted of diatoms, whereas during and after the bloom copepod diet was dominated by dinoflagellates and ciliates. Egg production was highest during the decay of the bloom, coinciding with highest proportional ingestion of heterotrophic organisms, but was not seriously reduced even during the peak of the bloom. We conclude that P. globosa blooms should not threaten survival of copepod populations, but the population recruitment may depend on the type (and concentration) of the dominant heterotrophs present during the blooms. Due to relatively unselective grazing, the impact of T. longicornis to the initiation of a Phaeocystis bloom is considered small, although grazing on decaying colonies may contribute to the faster termination of a bloom.  相似文献

The phytoplankton and ice algal assemblages in the SiberianLaptev Sea during the autumnal freeze-up period of 1995 aredescribed. The spatial distribution of algal taxa (diatoms,dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, chlorophytes) in the newly formedice and waters at the surface and at 5 m depth differed considerablybetween regions. This was also true for algal biomass measuredby in situ fluorescence, chlorophyll (Chl) a and taxon-specificcarbon content. Highest in situ fluorescence and Chl a concentrations(ranging from 0.1 to 3.2 µg l–1) occurred in surfacewaters with maxima in Buor Khaya Bay east of Lena Delta. Thealgal standing stock on the shelf consisted mainly of diatoms,dinoflagellates, chrysophytes and chlorophytes with a totalabundance (excluding unidentified flagellates <10 µm)in surface waters of 351–33 660 cells l–1. Highestalgal abundance occurred close to the Lena Delta. Phytoplanktonbiomass (phytoplankton carbon; PPC) ranged from 0.1 to 5.3 µgC l–1 in surface waters and from 0.3 to 2.1 µg Cl–1 at 5 m depth, and followed the distribution patternof abundances. However, the distribution of Chl a differed considerablyfrom the distribution pattern shown by PPC. The algal assemblagein the sea ice, which could not be quantified due to high sedimentload, was dominated by diatom species, accompanied by dinoflagellates.Thus, already during the early stage of autumnal freeze-up,incorporation processes, selective enrichment and subsequentgrowth lead to differences between surface water and sea icealgal assemblages.  相似文献

Population sizes of algae, bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates, and viruses were observed through the 1989 spring diatom bloom in Raunefjorden in western Norway. The culmination of the diatom bloom was followed by a peak in the concentration of bacteria and an increase in the concentration of heterotrophic flagellates, a pattern consistent with the concept of a food chain from photosynthetically produced organic material, through bacteria, to bacterivorous flagellates. The concentration of viruses varied through the spring bloom from 5 × 105 in the prebloom situation to a maximum of 1.3 × 107 viruses ml−1 1 week after the peak of the diatom bloom. Coinciding with the collapse in the diatom bloom, a succession of bacteria and viruses was observed in the mucous layer surrounding dead or senescent diatoms, with an estimated maximum of 23% of the total virus population attached to the diatoms. The dynamic behavior observed for the virus population rules out the possibility that it is dominated by inactive species, and the viruses are suggested to be active members of the microbial food web as agents causing lysis in parts of the bacterial population, diverting part of the bacterial production from the predatory food chain.  相似文献

A field program was conducted in 1980 and 1981 on three lakes in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia, to study plankton-water chemistry relationships in a region of potential acid precipitation stress. Among lake and between year comparisons were made. The three study sites represent two different types of lakes. Kejimkujik Lake (pH 4.8) and Pebbleloggitch Lake (pH 4.5) are both high-colored, dystrophic acid lakes. Beaverskin Lake is a clear, oligotrophic lake which is not as acidic (pH 5.4). The phytoplankton of Kejimkujik Lake was dominated by diatoms, while Pebbleloggitch Lake was dominated by chlorophytes and chrysophytes, and Beaverskin Lake was dominated by cyanophytes. Kejimkujik Lake had the highest total algal cell volume per liter, and Pebbleloggitch Lake the lowest. Rotifer populations composed the majority of the zooplankton communities, while the crustacean zooplankton were dominated by the acid-tolerant copepod Diaptomus minutus. Kejimkujik Lake had the lowest zooplankton biomass and Pebbleloggitch Lake the highest zooplankton biomass per m3. A pattern of highest algal density in Beaverskin Lake, but highest zooplankton density in Pebbleloggitch Lake emerged in both years. This is likely an effect of abundant, but unsuitable food (blue-green algae) in Beaverskin Lake and important detrital food resources in Pebbleloggitch Lake in both years. Multiple regression analysis of water chemistry variables with plankton species produced many significant effects, but failed to show clear patterns. Cause and effect relationships in aquatic ecosystems are poorly delineated by such techniques.  相似文献

Culture experiments were conducted on ten phytoplankton species to examine their biological and physiological responses during exposure to oil and a combination of oil and dispersant. The species tested included a range of taxa typically found in the Gulf of Mexico such as cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, and diatoms. Cultures were exposed to Macondo surrogate oil using the water accommodated fraction (WAF), and dispersed oil using a chemically enhanced WAF (CEWAF) and diluted CEWAF, to replicate conditions following the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A range of responses were observed, that could broadly class the algae as either “robust” or “sensitive” to oil and/or dispersant exposure. Robust algae were identified as Synechococcus elongatus, Dunaliella tertiolecta, two pennate diatoms Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Navicula sp., and Skeletonema grethae CCMP775, and were largely unaffected by any of the treatments (no changes to growth rate or time spent in lag phase relative to controls). The rest of the phytoplankton, all centric diatoms, exhibited at least some combination of reduced growth rates or increased lag time in response to oil and/or dispersant exposure. Photophysiology did not have a strong treatment effect, with significant inhibition of photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) only observed in the CEWAF, if at all. We found that the effects of oil and dispersants on phytoplankton physiology were species‐dependent, and not always detrimental. This has significant implications on how oil spills might impact phytoplankton community structure and bloom dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico, which in turn impacts higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Marine parasites of the genus Parvilucifera have been described as endoparasitoids of dinoflagellates. Recently, the species Parvilucifera corolla was described, but its host range was not examined. Here, the host selectivity of P. corolla was screened, including 110 strains of dinoflagellates (24 genera) and other microalgal groups as potential hosts. Infections and the full life cycle of the parasitoid were observed in 73 strains (16 genera) of dinoflagellates. Parvilucifera corolla did not infect most chlorophytes, cryptophytes, chrysophytes, diatoms, haptophytes and raphidophytes but one strain of Pyramimonas (chlorophyte) was infected, although without viable sporangia. In Symbiodinium natans, a transition to the coccoid stage was induced above a certain parasite:host ratio. These results confirm P. corolla as a generalist parasitoid of dinoflagellates, with important differences in host range regarding other species of the genus.  相似文献

A limnological survey of 15 lakes and 6 streams was carried out on Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) during austral summer 2001–2002. Most of the surface waters had low conductivities (20–105 μS cm−1) and nutrients (total phosphorus 0.01–0.24 μM), but some coastal lakes were enriched by nutrient inputs from seal colonies and marine inputs. Plankton communities in the lakes contained picocyanobacteria (102–104 cells ml−1), diatoms, chrysophytes and chlorophytes, and a large fraction of the total biomass was bacterioplankton. Zooplankton communities were dominated by Boeckella poppei and Branchinecta gainii; the benthic cladoceran Macrothrix ciliata was also recorded, for the first time in Antarctica. The chironomids Belgica antarctica and Parochlus steinenii, and the oligochaete Lumbricillus sp., occurred in stream and lake benthos. The phytobenthos included cyanobacterial mats, epilithic diatoms and the aquatic moss Drepanocladus longifolius. These observations underscore the limnological richness of this seasonally ice-free region in maritime Antarctica and its value as a long-term reference site for monitoring environmental change.  相似文献

1. We hypothesized that the fishery management practices of toxaphene application and trout stocking would affect non-target organisms in lakes. Because these practices were rarely monitored in the past, cladoceran and algal assemblages were quantified in sediment cores from two lakes treated 30+ years ago to determine the long-term response of organisms near the base of the food chain. 2. Chydorids were remarkably resistant over the short term (a few years) in both the oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes despite toxaphene treatments that extirpated native fish and other invertebrates. In the oligotrophic lake (Annette Lake), six chydorid taxa were less abundant in the years following treatment, although no loss of species richness was detected. In the eutrophic lake (Chatwin Lake), the dominant Chydorus cf. sphaericus declined coincident with toxaphene treatment, but longer-term declines of all taxa were probably related to food web or other changes rather than to toxaphene toxicity. Cause and effect coupling was complicated by the fact that many chydorids were present at low concentrations in some pretreatment samples. 3. The algal communities (as fossil pigments) responded to treatment differently in the two lakes. In the oligotrophic lake, planktonic diatoms, dinoflagellates and chlorophytes were replaced as dominants by deep-water or benthic blooming cryptophytes, chrysophytes and cyanobacteria. This shift occurred along with increases in large daphnids and the ‘grazing indicator’, pheophorbide a. While both lakes appear to have had enhanced pigment preservation following treatment, the eutrophic lake encountered few long-term changes in its fossil pigment assemblage. Redundancy analysis estimated that the presence or absence of stocked trout explained much of the variation in the algal assemblages, particularly in the oligotrophic lake. 4. Toxaphene remained elevated in profundal sediments from these lakes 30 and 35 years after treatment.  相似文献

Summary Sedimentation of phytoplankton provides food and energy for zoobenthic communities. In this study the rates, species composition and biomass of phytoplankton input to Frobisher Bay sediments were examined during ice (late November to July) and open water (late July to October) periods from 1982 to 1985. The rates were higher on the sea bed than at 20 m. The minimum rate (3x105 cells·m-2·day-1) of sedimentation occurred during the early part of the ice period. It increased as the ice thickened and reached a maximum of 2.8x108 cells·m-2·day-1 after the phytoplankton bloom at the beginning of the open water period in the first two weeks of August. The sedimented phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms, with a great majority of pennate species during the spring (April to June) and centric forms during the summer (July to August). Green flagellates, dinoflagellates and chrysophytes occurred as a low percentage of the total population in all seasons. Other indicators (chlorophyll a and phaeopigments) showed highest biomass levels in the deepest traps. They were consistently low during the winter (December to March) and reached their maxima during the open-water period of summer. Their abundance was correlated with the seasonal cycle of the phytoplankton in the water column.  相似文献

Members of Amoebophrya ceratii complex are known to infect a number of free‐living dinoflagellates including harmful algal bloom species. In August and October 2012, Amoebophrya infections during two bloom events of the dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides were observed along southern coastal waters of Korea. Microscopic observations and molecular data revealed that two different Amoebophrya parasites infected the same host species. In addition, while one developed in the host's nucleus, the other in the host's cytoplasm. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the two parasites were not nested in the previously recognized “Amoebophrya ceratii complex clade”, which contained sequences of parasites infecting numerous dinoflagellate species. Instead, they branched as sister taxa to the isolate (possibly Amoebophrya) from radiolarians Hexacontium gigantheum. Our result indicates that the two Amoebophrya parasites infecting C. polykrikoides may be different species from those inside the “complex.”  相似文献
