  • Reproductive performance is known to differ between co‐sexual and non‐co‐sexual species. Thus, our aim was to determine whether: (i) the distance between sex structures is negatively associated with sex expression; (ii) male gametangia take longer to mature in rhizautoicous species than in gonioautoicous species; and (iii) the gonioautoicous sexual system has greater reproductive success (i.e. percentage of ramets with sporophyte) than the rhizautoicous sexual system.
  • One population each of the mosses Fissidens scariosus and F. submarginatus, rhizautoicous and gonioautoicous, respectively, in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in Brazil were sampled monthly from September 2016 until August 2017. The number and phenophases of antheridia, archegonia and sporophytes were analysed for each species. Sexual expression and reproductive success were calculated, and reproductive phenology compared across environmental variables.
  • As expected, sexual expression was significantly higher for the gonioautoicous species, which produced antheridia throughout the year and archegonia over many months, while gametangia production by the rhizautoicous species occurred only during the rainy season. Mean number of gametangia per perigonium and perichaetium were slightly higher for the rhizautoicous species (6.84 antheridia; 11.38 archegonia) than for the gonioautoicous species (4.39; 7.62). Gametangia and sporophyte production in the rhizautoicous species were markedly seasonal compared to that of the gonioautoicous species, although reproductive success did not differ.
  • Therefore, we infer that the rhizautoicy (i.e. a functional dioicy) promotes lower expression of gametangia compared to gonioautoicy but is more efficient and so obtains the same reproductive success.

Abstract

Monoclonal cultures of Fossombronia brasiliensis were grown with different photoperiods, temperatures and inorganic nitrogen sources. The subsequent vegetative growth and production of gametangia is described. A quantitative analysis of the numbers of antheridia and archegonia and their relative proportions is given. At 18°C, F. brasiliensis was found to be a short-day plant, with a critical night length of between six and twelve hours, while at 10°C it exhibited quantitative SD plant properties. Plants produced more male gametangia at 18°C and more female gametangia at 10°C. Nitrogen as nitrate consistently produced more gametangia than the ammonium source.  相似文献

Abstract

Reproductive phenology was described in the leafy dioecious hepatic Lophozia silvicola Buch during three successive growing seasons in an old-growth forest population in southern Finland. The sequence of phenological events was quantified by a maturity index M i, which was calculated on the basis of the rankings of the developmental stages and the numbers of individual shoots in each stage. The developmental cycle of antheridia was correlated with the temperature during the growing season, with maturation from July to August. Gametangia maturation from initials to gametangia dehiscence takes about 10 months including a probable pause during winter. Antheridia in early developmental stages were present in the population under study throughout the growing season. The timing of the developmental cycle of archegonia varied among years. Fertilization was estimated to occur in early to mid-summer on the basis of the presence of dehisced antheridia and the subsequent emergence of 'swollen venter' archegonia. Maturation of archegonia and the proportion of sporophyte-bearing shoots were correlated with mean rainfall and relative humidity during the week preceding each sampling. Total shoot number per sample, an indication of population density, was correlated with numbers and proportions of females and sporophyte-bearing shoots in the samples. The proportion of sex-expressing shoots in the population was on average 26%. The proportion of females was on average 8%, while the proportion of males was 17%, the difference between them being significant. The female to male sex ratio varied between the samples, with a mean of 0.61 indicating male-biased overall sex ratio in the population studied.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of the rainy and dry seasons on the parasite communities of Cichlasoma amazonarum (Kullander, 1983) in a tributary of the Amazon River system, northern Brazil. Of 112 fish examined, 95.5% were parasitized by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Gussevia disparoides, Posthodiplostomum sp., Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, and Echinorhynchus paranensis, as well as by the Glossiphoniidae leech. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and P. pillulare were the dominant parasite species, with I. multifiliis the most prevalent and abundant; the leech (Glossiphoniidae) was the least prevalent and least abundant. Parasites presented an aggregate dispersion pattern and seasonal variations in infestation levels, influenced by the environmental conditions in the rainy season. Variation in the parasite dynamics created overall changes in the parasite communities, characterized by greater diversity, species richness and evenness during the rainy season. However, there was a high similarity (99.8%) in the parasite community structure between the rainy and dry seasons. During the dry season the hosts had predominantly 1–3 parasite species compared to 3–4 parasites in the rainy season. Some parasites in the eastern Amazon undergo population changes relating to seasonality. These results thus indicate the correct season to apply adequate prophylactic measures to reduce negative impacts of parasites in this wild ornamental fish when captured.  相似文献

Abstract

Some species of Fontinalis produce a calyptra which splits below the point of insertion of adjacent archegonia. Therefore accessory archegonia are incorporated into the aerial calyptra. This is especially evident in F. squamosa and less so in species with few archegonia per perichaetium such as F. dalecarlica.  相似文献

  1. Terrestrial plant populations located at the margins of species’ distributions often display reduced sexual reproduction and an increased reliance on asexual reproduction. One hypothesis to explain this phenomenon is that the decline is associated with environmental effects on the energetic costs to produce reproductive organs.
  2. In order to clarify the changing processes of sexual reproduction along an elevational gradient, we investigated the sexual reproductive parameters, such as the number of sporophytes and gametangia, in Racomitrium lanuginosum, a dioicous moss found on Mt. Fuji.
  3. Matured sporophytes were present only below 3,000 m, and the number of sporophytes per shoot tended to be lower at higher elevation habitats. The numbers of male inflorescences per shoot and antheridia per inflorescence and shoot significantly decreased with increasing elevation. In contrast, the numbers of female inflorescences per shoot and archegonia per inflorescence and shoot varied little across elevations.
  4. Synthesis. Our results suggest that the reasons for this limitation are assumed to be limitations in sporophyte development that result in abortion, and the spatial segregation between males and females. Possible reasons for the abortion of sporophytes are the inhibitory effects of low air temperature, a shortened growth period, and winter environmental conditions at higher elevations. Remarkable differences between male and female on various reproductive parameters found in this study are thought to affect the mode of sexual reproduction under the harsh environment. These differences between males and females may be caused by differences in the costs of production and development of gametangia, sensitivity to environmental stressors, and phenological patterns.

Abstract

In Phascum cuspidatum the number of sporophytes per inflorescence was found to increase, up to a certain limit, with increase in the number of archegonia present. The number of archegonia present varies with the age of the inflorescence, and fertilization terminates the production of archegonia. The common occurrence of solitary sporophytes is due to fertilization at a time when only a small number of archegonia is present in most inflorescences. Delayed fertilization, leading to an increase in the average number of archegonia per inflorescence, is a necessary precondition for increased occurrence of polysety. As many as five sporophytes in a single inflorescence formed capsules with spores without significant reduction in the size of capsules. Variation in the frequency of abortive embryos gave evidence of competition amongst sporophytes and this was most severe in the smaller inflorescences. The occurrence of polysety in Tortula muralis appears to be governed by the same rules.  相似文献

A longitudinal study of nematode infection in chimpanzees was conducted between 1989 and 1994 on the M group chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania during two annual dry and rainy season periods and a third rainy season. Chemical and physical antiparasite properties of medicinal plant use against the strongyle nematodeOesophagostomum stephanostomum have recently been reported at Mahale. Here, the incidence of nematode infections were analyzed for seasonal trends to elucidate the possible influence of parasite infection on previously reported seasonality of medicinal plant use and to test the hypothesis that the use of these plants is stimulated byO. stephanostomum. The number of chimpanzees infected byO. stephanostomum was significantly higher in the rainy season than in the dry season of both 1989–1990 and 1991–1992. However, the incidence ofTrichuris trichura andStrongyloides fuelleborni showed no seasonality. Reinfection of individuals byO. stephanostomum occurred in synchrony with annual variation in rainfall: there was a sharp rise in the occurrence of new infections per individual within one to two months after the beginning of the first heavy rains of the season. This pattern coincides with the reproductive cycle of this nematode species.O. stephanostomum (95%) infections were associated significantly more frequently with medicinal plant use than eitherT. trichiura (50%) orS. fuelleborni (40%) infections. These observations are consistent with previous reports for the increased use of these plants during the rainy season and are consistent the hypothesis that medicinal plant use is stimulated byO. stephanostomum infection.  相似文献

Basic knowledge of the relationships between tree growth and environmental variables is crucial for understanding forest dynamics and predicting vegetation responses to climate variations. Trees growing in tropical areas with a clear seasonality in rainfall often form annual growth rings. In the understory, however, tree growth is supposed to be mainly affected by interference for access to light and other resources. In the semi-deciduous Mayombe forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the evergreen species Aidia ochroleuca, Corynanthe paniculata and Xylopia wilwerthii dominate the understory. We studied their wood to determine whether they form annual growth rings in response to changing climate conditions. Distinct growth rings were proved to be annual and triggered by a common external factor for the three species. Species-specific site chronologies were thus constructed from the cross-dated individual growth-ring series. Correlation analysis with climatic variables revealed that annual radial stem growth is positively related to precipitation during the rainy season but at different months. The growth was found to associate with precipitation during the early rainy season for Aidia but at the end of the rainy season for Corynanthe and Xylopia. Our results suggest that a dendrochronological approach allows the understanding of climate–growth relationships in tropical forests, not only for canopy trees but also for evergreen understory species and thus arguably for the whole tree community. Global climate change influences climatic seasonality in tropical forest areas, which is likely to result in differential responses across species with a possible effect on forest composition over time.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare mycorrhizal abundance and diversity in sites with different regimes of disturbance in a tropical rain forest at Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. Arbuscular mycorrhizal spores were quantified at two sites: closed canopy and gaps in the forest. Data were recorded during dry, rainy, and windy ("nortes") seasons. Spores of eight Glomus species, sporocarps of three Sclerocystis species, three species of Acaulospora and two of Gigaspora were found. Significant differences in the number of species and spores were found among seasons. The highest numbers of species and spores were observed during the dry season, with a marked decrease during the rainy season. Our results show that disturbance does not but seasonality does affect abundance and richness of mycorrhizal spores in this tropical wet forest. Accepted: 11 October 1998  相似文献

A 14 year monitoring of species composition and abundance of cyclopoid copepods throughout the rainy and dry seasons in a flooded savanna at Mantecal, Apure State, Venezuela, is presented. Two characteristic habitats within these water bodies were selected: the open center of small ponds free of emergent vegetation and the surrounding flooded grassland. In total, 13 species were registered, all of which appeared in the flooded grassland and 11 of which occurred in the open water. Ten species were common for the two habitats during the dry season. The highest abundance was found in flooded grassland during the dry season. Eight species showed abundances greater than 1.0 individual per liter in flooded grassland during both seasons; 3 and 7 species were this abundant in the open water during rainy and dry seasons, respectively. Mesocyclops meridianus and Microcyclops varicans were the most abundant species in both habitats and seasons, while Thermocyclops decipiens was the dominant species during rainy season in open water. Principal component analysis indicates that the important species were positively correlated between them (sharing habitat and season).  相似文献

In areas of the Cerrado biome (Brazilian savanna) with well‐defined rainy and dry seasons, changes in climate and landscape affect the abundance and seasonality of insects. Larvae of the antlion Myrmeleon brasiliensis (Návas) (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae) are predators that build traps in dry sandy soil to capture prey. Here we determined the effect of rain on trap building by M. brasiliensis larvae in a riparian forest in the Cerrado biome. Differences in population size and developmental stage were found between the rainy and dry seasons. In the laboratory, the effect of rain‐soaked soil on trap building was evaluated. Fewer antlion larvae were found in the rainy season. Moreover, a greater abundance of larvae in the final stage of development (third instar) was found in the dry season, whereas more first instars were found in the rainy season. The latter revealed that wet soil affects the trap building of the larvae, as smaller traps were built in the treatment with soaked soil (simulated rain), whereas the larvae in the control treatment (no rain) continued building traps with no change in size. The findings indicate that seasonality in the Cerrado biome exerts a short‐term influence on M. brasiliensis larvae (larvae build fewer traps) as well as a long‐term influence (association with life cycle).  相似文献

Although there are several species of ferns that are important components of many coastal ecosystems, the adaptations that allow these species to live in salty conditions have been studied only in two Acrostichum species. We have studied the effects of salt on germination, development of the gametophyte and sexual expression of the fern Asplenium marinum, which lives on coastal cliffs of Europe. Cultures at four different levels of salt concentration, 0%, 0.98%, 1.96% and 3.26%, were established for this purpose. Salt caused a significant delay in spore germination, and prevented it completely at high concentrations (3.26%). However, spores were able to recover germination ability after a period of seawater incubation once salinity concentrations decreased. Variable salinity conditions are a typical feature of sea cliffs where halophytes can grow. A salty culture medium also affects the development of the prothalli. Higher salinity of the substrate produced a significant decrease in gametophyte sizes, and affected the development of gametangia as well. Only males were found in a 0.98%-salt medium, and no gametangia were observed in cultures at 1.96%-salt medium. Recovered spores after one and a half month in high salinity concentration, 3.26%, were able, when transplanted to 0%-salt medium, to develop normal sexual prothalli, and this occurred in a shorter time than spores without any prior treatment. A. marinum can be considered as a halophyte fern that is able to germinate and grow in salty conditions. But it takes advantage of rainy periods that cause decrease of salt concentration, which seems to be important in particular for gametangia development and fertilization.  相似文献

Sap-sucking insects (Auchenorrhyncha, Hemiptera) were sampled quantitatively from the foliage of 15 species of Ficus (Moraceae) in a lowland rain forest in Papua New Guinea. Continuous sampling throughout 12 months produced 61,777 individuals and 491 species. Two seasonality parameters, circular statistics and Lloyd's index, were calculated for 139 species with a sample size of more than 36 individuals. Most of the species were present in the adult stage for at least half of the year, and many of them continuously throughout the year. However, almost all species exhibited marked seasonal changes in abundance. The abundance peaks of species were scattered throughout most of the year, but more species reached their population maximum during the wet, especially early wet, season than during the dry season. Overall species richness and abundance of Auchenorrhyncha were also higher during the wet than the dry season. A significant correlation between seasonality and host specificity was revealed in the auchenorrhynchan community. In particular, species evenly distributed throughout the year had a tendency to feed on a larger number of Ficus species than seasonally more restricted species. The seasonality, and the seasonality versus specificity correlation, were independent of species abundance. Among the most abundant species (n > 300) there was a marginally significant negative correlation between abundance and host specificity, so that polyphagous species had, on average, larger populations than specialists. There was no similar correlation among rarer species. The Auchenorrhyncha comprises three feeding guilds, which were also analysed separately. The mesophyll-feeding guild exhibited more pronounced seasonality than the phloem- and xylem-feeders. This difference could be explained as a part of the overall correlation between seasonality and host specificity as mesophyll-feeders were significantly more host specific than the other two guilds. Antheridia and Archegonia of the Apogamous Fern Pteris cretica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The external appearance of gametophytes and gametangia of Pteriscretica closely resembled those of sexually reproducing ferns.Antheridia were fully functional but archegonia were not. Despitethe formation of egg, ventral and neck canal cells, the flask-shapedarchegonia failed to open and Pteris spermatozoids failed toexhibit a chemotactic response to them. Cryo SEM revealed thatthe topmost cells of mature archegonia had collapsed, and thisis thought to account for the loss of archegonial function. The effect of nitrogen levels of 0, 60, 120, and 250 kg/ha and insecticide treatment (Furadan) on population densities and parasitism of lepidopteran stemborers, and maize yields were studied in Zanzibar during 2004/05. Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) dominated by 3-fold over Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and 42 fold over Chilo orichalcociliellus Strand (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Stemborer density per plant and parasitism by Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) increased with nitrogen application level. Percentage of bored internodes per plant caused by stemborer decreased with N levels during the short rainy season. Pesticide application reduced densities of all stemborer species during the short rainy season, when infestations were high. Maize yield increased 2 to 8 times with N level, compared to the zero treatment, but the effect was less pronounced in the protected plots.  相似文献

Indigenous Sorghum species are a prominent feature of the seasonally-dry tropics of north-west Australia. Studies of the dormancy characteristics of these species were undertaken, and measurements of seedling emergence, of plant survival, growth and reproductive success, and of seed bank changes were made for one Sorghum intrans population and for three S. stipoideum populations over two growing seasons. On wetting, 90% of the non-dormant, viable seeds of nil species germinated within five days. The temperature range for optimal germination was 25 - 35°C, and germination declined with decreasing water potential. The seeds of all species had high innate dormancy at seedfall, and this was broken down over the ensuing dry season. For S. intrans and S. stipoideum height and tiller number increased steadily after emergence up to the time of floral initiation, which occurred simultaneously for primary tillers within each population. Most vegetative tillers died after this leaving a single reproductive culm which rapidly elongated to reach 1 – 4 mat maturity, depending on site and season. Seedfall occurred over a short, c. two-week period before the rainy season had finished. Seeds were dispersed within 2 m of the parent plant. Seeds were buried to less than 2 cm by the screwing action of their hygroscopically-active awns. All these annual Sorghum species appear to have transient seedbanks, formed at seedfall near the end of one rainy season and exhausted by germination following the first rains of the next annual rainy season. We suggest that S. intrans and S. stipoideum persist despite this feature because they mature at the earliest time that the rainy season has been known to end in their respective localities. Persistence is further aided by adaptations which enable individuals to survive the unpredictable short droughts which occur while they are emerging and growing. S. intrans and S. stipoideum have low fecundity (mean ? 8 viable seeds per individual) and high survivorship. They fit Watkinson's (1981) schema relating fecundity to survival for annuals with transient seed banks.  相似文献

Plants adopt different strategies in response to seasonal variations in their natural biotype. In this study, the responses of seasonal changes on the organic osmolyte contents, ionic homoeostasis, osmotic potential and succulence of native chenopods in a salt marsh of Egypt were studied. Five halophytic species of the chenopodiaceae were collected during the rainy and dry season: Atriplex halimus L., Halocnemum strobilaceum (Pall.), Salicornia fruticosa (L.), Suaeda pruinosa (Lange) and Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (Moric). Results showed that plants employ an osmoconformer strategy via species specificity of response to seasonal variations. The total ions accumulation in all species was higher during the rainy season compared with the dry season. In particular, during rainy season, A. halimus resulted the higher accumulator species, followed by H. strobilaceum. Conversely, S. fruticosa, S. pruinosa and A. macrostachyum were defined as low‐accumulator species. In each studied species, the effective salinity, biological absorption coefficient as well as leaf succulence were higher during the rainy season. In conclusion, the present study have pointed out the importance that should be accorded with the development of research directed towards agronomic aspects for the uses of halophytic chenopodiaceae in salt marsh. Further, data obtained indicate that the ions accumulator species should be considered for use in phytoremediation of degraded saline lands.  相似文献

Abstract

We studied the structure of newly found entomogenous galls in three Indian species of Selaginella, and the biochemical changes during gall development as well as their seasonal abundances in 10 squares of 1.5 m2 under two differing habitat conditions, open and covered. Adult wasps (Cynipidae) initiate two types of gall formation by oviposition, spherical galls on vegetative shoots and elongated, club-shaped strobilar galls on reproductive shoots. Galls are anatomically and biochemically different from the unaffected shoots. Vegetative shoot apices bear more galls (84.6%) than reproductive shoot apices (15.4%). Gall frequency is significantly higher in covered (94.8%) than in open habitat (5.2%), and its seasonal peak occurs earlier in the former (43.1% during the rainy season) than in latter habitat (52.8% in autumn). We discuss the relationship between relative species density and gall seasonality as well as the possible role of certain environmental factors that make covered habitats more favorable to the gall inducer.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal variations in CAM performance of sunexposed and partially shaded populations of Bromelia humilis were measured under natural conditions in a semi-arid region in northern Venezuela. The sun population consisted of smaller plants, with lower chlorophyll and total nitrogen contents per unit leaf area compared with plants from the partial-shade population. During the dry season CAM activity, assessed as nocturnal acid accumulation, was higher in the partial-shade population. Acid accumulation was stimulated by irrigation in both populations within 24 h after treatment. Daily changes in concentration of soluble sugars were opposite to leaf acidity indicating their role as carbon source for acid synthesis during the night. The change in nocturnal sugar concentration was always more than the amount required for acid accumulation, suggesting other carbohydrate-consuming processes such as transportation of sugars out of the leaf. CAM activity was higher during the rainy season, and differences between populations were smaller. At the end of the rainy season reduction of CAM activity caused by drought was first detected in the sun population. Measured ratios of glucan/soluble sugar show a higher proportion of readily utilizable sugars during periods of active CAM and growth. Under conditions of continuous high light intensity and air temperature leading to all year round high potential evaporation in semiarid tropical regions, fully exposed populations of B. humilis show a pronounced reduction of metabolic activity. Partial shade favours growth and CAM activity in this constitutive CAM species. It is concluded that water stress, and not light intensity, is the predominant limiting factor for growth of this species under natural conditions.  相似文献
