Simulations of small bubbles traveling through symmetric bifurcations are conducted to garner information pertinent to gas embolotherapy, a potential cancer treatment. Gas embolotherapy procedures use intra-arterial bubbles to occlude tumor blood supply. As bubbles pass through bifurcations in the blood stream nonhomogeneous splitting and undesirable bioeffects may occur. To aid development of gas embolotherapy techniques, a volume of fluid method is used to model the splitting process of gas bubbles passing through artery and arteriole bifurcations. The model reproduces the variety of splitting behaviors observed experimentally, including the bubble reversal phenomenon. Splitting homogeneity and maximum shear stress along the vessel walls is predicted over a variety of physical parameters. Small bubbles, having initial length less than twice the vessel diameter, were found unlikely to split in the presence of gravitational asymmetry. Maximum shear stresses were found to decrease exponentially with increasing Reynolds number. Vortex-induced shearing near the bifurcation is identified as a possible mechanism for endothelial cell damage. 相似文献

Steady flow of an incompressible, Newtonian fluid through a symmetric bifurcated rigid channel was numerically analyzed by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The upstream Reynolds number ranged from 100 to 1500. The bifurcation was symmetrical with a branch angle of 60 deg and the area ratio of the daughter to the mother vessel was 2.0. The numerical procedure utilized a coordinate transformation and a control volume approach to discretize the equations to finite difference form and incorporated the SIMPLE algorithm in performing the calculation. The predicted velocity pattern was in qualitative agreement with experimental measurements available in the literature. The results also showed the effect of secondary flow which can not be predicted using previous two-dimensional simulations. A region of reversed flow was observed near the outer wall of the branch except for the case of the lowest Reynolds number. Particle trajectory was examined and it was found that no fluid particles remained within the recirculation zone. The shear stress was calculated on both the inner and the outer wall of the branch. The largest wall shear stress, located in the vicinity of the apex of the branch, was of the same order of magnitude as the level that can cause damage to the vessel wall as reported in a recent study. 相似文献

Many cardiovascular lesions such as aneurysms, intimal cushions, and atherosclerotic plaques tend to occur near bifurcations. This suggests that hemodynamic factors may be involved. Since measuring devices (such as anemometers) are still too large to allow local measurements of flow disturbances, we have attempted to predict the nature of these factors mathematically. Biological variables include pulsatile flow of a nonNewtonian fluid in distensible branching vessels with different angles and flow rates. Our initial analysis considers the flow in a two-dimensional bifurcation with a symmetrical flow divider perfused with steady flow at variable Reynolds numbers. At all flows, high shear forces develop on either side of the flow divider (i.e. at the apex of the bifurcation). With high flows, regions of sluggish or reverse flow develop near the outer walls of the bifurcation. The analysis confirms that the flow at the apex is quite different from that at the outer angles and that the latter varies more with flow rate than the former. 相似文献

Axial gas transport due to the interaction between radial mixing and radially nonuniform axial velocities is responsible for gas transport in thick airways during High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFO). Because the airways can be characterized by a bifurcating tube network, the secondary flow in the curved portion of a bifurcating tube contributes to cross-stream mixing. In this study the oscillatory flow and concentration fields through a single symmetrical airway bifurcating tube model were numerically analyzed by solving three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and mass concentration equations with the SIMPLER algorithm. The simulation conditions were for a Womersley number, alpha = 9.1 and Reynolds numbers in the parent tube between 200 and 1000, corresponding to Dn2/alpha 4 in the curved portion between 2 and 80, where Dn is Dean number. For comparison with the results from the bifurcating tube, we calculated the velocity and concentration fields for fully developed oscillatory flow through a curved tube with a curvature rate of 1/10, which is identical to the curved portion of the bifurcating tube. For Dn2/alpha 4 < or = 10 in the curved portion of the bifurcating tube, the flow divider and area changes dominate the axial gas transport, because the effective diffusivity is greater than in either a straight or curved tube, in spite of low secondary velocities. However, for Dn2/alpha 4 > or = 20, the gas transport characteristics in a bifurcation are similar to a curved tube because of the significant effect of secondary flow. 相似文献

Oscillatory flow in the lung is studied using an order-of-magnitude analysis and flow visualization experiments in a single bifurcation with lung-like geometry. The results are used to obtain a classification scheme that identifies three major flow regimes, distinguished on the basis of whether the flow is dominated by unsteadiness, viscous effects, or the effects of convective acceleration. The unsteady regime is found to exist for values of a dimensionless stroke length (L/a, i.e., stroke volume/local cross-sectional area) less than or equal to 3 and for values of a dimensionless frequency (alpha 2 = alpha 2 omega/nu, where alpha is airway radius, omega the oscillatory frequency, and nu the kinematic viscosity) less than or equal to 10 in basic agreement with previous studies. The viscous regime is found when alpha 2(L/a)(a/R)1/2 less than 10 and alpha 2 less than 10 where R is the local radius of curvature in the bifurcation; the convective regime is found when alpha 2(L/a)(a/R)1/2 greater than 10 and L/a greater than 3. This same approach yields scaling laws for the magnitude of secondary flow velocities and shows that the ratio of secondary-to-axial velocity is small everywhere outside of the convective regime where it scales with (a/R)1/2. Comparison of these results to related simple flows shows that many of the features observed can be attributed to the effects of curvature, suggesting that the influence of the flow divider and of area change may be of lesser importance than previously thought. 相似文献

Flow and stress patterns in human carotid artery bifurcation models, which differ in the bifurcation angle, are analysed numerically under physiologically relevant flow conditions. The governing Navier-Stokes equations describing pulsatile, three-dimensional flow of an incompressible non-Newtonian fluid are approximated using a pressure correction finite element method, which has been developed recently. The non-Newtonian behaviour of blood is modelled using Casson's relation, based on measured dynamic viscosity. The study concentrates on flow and stress characteristics in the carotid sinus. The results show that the complex flow in the sinus is affected by the angle variation. The magnitude of reversed flow, the extension of the recirculation zone in the outer sinus region and the duration of flow separation during the pulse cycle as well as the resulting wall shear stress are clearly different in the small angle and in the large angle bifurcation. The haemodynamic phenomena, which are important in atherogenesis, are more pronounced in the large angle bifurcation. 相似文献

Velocity and pressure fields, streamlines and wall shear stress distributions were numerically obtained for two-dimensional, steady and pulsatile flow in a carotid artery segment. Distinct regions of reverse flow near the bifurcation and wavy flow patterns in the branching channels were observed during portions of the pulse. These phenomena disappear at the end of the systolic phase of the cardiac cycle. A previously validated plaque formation model predicts that plaque sites and the local extent of atherosclerotic lesions are similar for those present on human angiograms. 相似文献

Measurements and numericaL calculations of laminar flow in a plane 90 degrees bifurcation are presented. The corresponding two-dimensional steady flow Navier-Stokes equations solved by a finite-difference procedure employing pressure and velocity as dependent variables. The influence of Reynolds number and mass flow ratio on the velocity field, streamlines, local shear stress and pressure drop are quantified and shown to be substantial. The circulation patterns and shear stresses are examined in view of available data regarding the formation of atherotic plaques in the human circulatory system. The calculated velocity profiles are compared with measurements obtained with laser Doppler anemometry and the agreement is shown to be satisfactory. Calculations outside the range of measurements which are of value to biomechanics are also presented. 相似文献

Pressure drop and flow rate measurements in a rigid cast of a human aortic bifurcation under both steady and physiological pulsatile flow conditions are reported. Integral momentum and mechanical energy balances are used to calculate impedance, spatially averaged wall shear stress and viscous dissipation rate from the data. In the daughter branches, steady flow impedance is within 30% of the Poiseuille flow prediction, while pulsatile flow impedance is within a factor of 2 of fully developed, oscillatory, straight tube flow theory (Womersley theory). Estimates of wall shear stress are in accord with measurements obtained from velocity profiles. Mean pressure drop and viscous dissipation rate are elevated in pulsatile flow relative to steady flow at the mean flow rate, and the exponents of their Reynolds number dependence are in accord with available theory. 相似文献

The results of computational simulations may supplement MR and other in vivo diagnostic techniques to provide an accurate picture of the hemodynamics in particular vessels, which may help demonstrate the risks of embolism or plaque rupture posed by particular plaque deposits. In this study, a model based on an endarterectomy specimen of the plaque in a carotid bifurcation was examined. The flow conditions include steady flow at Reynolds numbers of 300, 600, and 900 as well as unsteady pulsatile flow. Both dynamic pressure and wall shear stress are very high, with shear values up to 70 N/m2, proximal to the stenosis throat in the internal carotid artery, and both vary significantly through the flow cycle. The wall shear stress gradient is also strong along the throat. Vortex shedding is observed downstream of the most severe occlusion. Two turbulence models, the Chien and Goldberg varieties of k-epsilon, are tested and evaluated for their relevance in this geometry. The Chien model better captures phenomena such as vortex shedding. The flow distal to stenosis is likely transitional, so a model that captures both laminar and turbulent behavior is needed. 相似文献

Pulsatile non-Newtonian blood flow simulation through a bifurcation with an aneurysm 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Blood flow is analysed by means of computer simulation in an idealized arterial bifurcation model which is pathologically altered by a saccular aneurysm. The theoretical study of the flow pattern and the paths of fluid particles is carried out under pulsatile Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow conditions. The governing equations are solved numerically with the use of the finite element method. The results show the disturbed blood flow in the bifurcation and the relatively low intra-aneurysmal flow circulation. In addition to the study of basic flow patterns in the segment, a comparison of non-Newtonian and Newtonian results is carried out. This comparison proves that for the considered large artery model under physiological flow conditions where the yield number is relatively low there is no essential difference in the results. 相似文献

Carotid artery bifurcation (CB) is the preferred site for development of atherosclerosis (AS) in extracranial cerebral arteries; internal carotid artery stenosis is the most common cause of ischemic stroke. The frequent atherosclerotic disease of CB may best be explained by the hemodynamic influence of complex blood flow that results from the unique geometry of the bifurcation. Few papers analyze all possible geometric structural characteristics of this bifurcation. While performing many carotid endarterectomies, we noticed that a certain correlation between CB height in the neck and its angle existed, that a larger angle is accompanied with increased frequency of elongation and kinking and that CB shape influences distribution of atherosclerosis. The purpose of this paper is to quantify and evaluate these clinical observations. Radiogrametric analysis of 154 bi-plane orthogonal aortic arch arteriograms of patients with symptomatic atherosclerotic carotid artery disease was performed and a total of 289 CBs were analyzed. The CB height in relation to cervical spine segments was measured and real angles of each bifurcation were calculated. A positive linear correlation between CB height and angle exists: the CB angle increases /decreases 3.34 degrees for each third of the cervical vertebral body height or intervertebral space height. The CB is positioned a little higher on the left side. The proximal border of the atherosclerotic process is found at the level of intersection of the axes of the common carotid artery branches in 92.6% of examined CBs. In lower CBs (with smaller angles) the proximal border was located in the last segment of the common carotid artery, while in high bifurcations (wider angles) the proximal border of the AS process is more distally in the blood flow, in the beginning of the internal carotid artery, and the process was more extensive. High CBs are more suitable for eversion endarterectomy while normal and low CBs are more suitable for open (classic) carotid endarterectomy. The influence of the geometric risk factor demands further investigation. 相似文献

The blood flow dynamics of a stenosed, subject-specific, carotid bifurcation were numerically simulated using the spectral element method. Pulsatile inlet conditions were based on in vivo color Doppler ultrasound measurements of blood velocity. The results demonstrated the transitional or weakly turbulent state of the blood flow, which featured rapid velocity and pressure fluctuations in the post-stenotic region of the internal carotid artery (ICA) during systole and laminar flow during diastole. High-frequency vortex shedding was greatest downstream of the stenosis during the deceleration phase of systole. Velocity fluctuations had a frequency within the audible range of 100-300Hz. Instantaneous wall shear stress (WSS) within the stenosis was relatively high during systole ( approximately 25-45Pa) compared to that in a healthy carotid. In addition, high spatial gradients of WSS were present due to flow separation on the inner wall. Oscillatory flow reversal and low pressure were observed distal to the stenosis in the ICA. This study predicts the complex flow field, the turbulence levels and the distribution of the biomechanical stresses present in vivo within a stenosed carotid artery. 相似文献

Steady and pulsatile flow in a glass model simulating an arterial bifurcation was investigated by flow visualization techniques. Secondary flow generated at the bifurcation has a similar pattern to a vortex, called the horseshoe vortex, produced around a wall-based protuberance in a circular tube. The same flow disturbance was clearly observed during the decelerating phase of pulsatile flow. The vortex produces a stagnation point on the top and bottom wall just upstream from the bifurcation apex. When aluminium dust was suspended in the test fluid perfusing the blood vessel model, particles deposited over an area spreading from the stagnation point to the lateral corners of the bifurcation. Comparison between the present results and topographical patterns of atherosclerosis reported in the literature suggests that it is in such low shear regions that lipid deposition tends to occur most. 相似文献

Our knowledge of how geometry influences abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) biomechanics is still developing. Both iliac bifurcation angle and proximal neck angle could impact the haemodynamics and stresses within AAA. Recent comparisons of the morphology of ruptured and intact AAA show that cases with large iliac bifurcation angles are less likely to rupture than those with smaller angles. We aimed to perform fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations on a range of idealised AAA geometries to conclusively determine the influence of proximal neck and iliac bifurcation angle on AAA wall stress and haemodynamics.Peak wall shear stress (WSS) and time-averaged WSS (TAWSS) in the AAA sac region only increased when the proximal neck angle exceeded 30°. Both peak WSS (p < 0.0001) and peak von Mises wall stress (p = 0.027) increased with iliac bifurcation angle, whereas endothelial cell activation potential (ECAP) decreased with iliac bifurcation angle (p < 0.001) and increased with increasing neck angle. These observations may be important as AAAs have been shown to expand, develop thrombus and rupture in areas of low WSS. Here we show that AAAs with larger iliac bifurcation angles have higher WSS, potentially reducing the likelihood of rupture. Furthermore, ECAP was lower in AAA geometries with larger iliac bifurcation angles, implying less likelihood of thrombus development and wall degeneration. Therefore our findings could help explain the clinical observation of lower rupture rates associated with AAAs with large iliac bifurcation angles. 相似文献

Considering steady laminar flow in a two-dimensional symmetric branching channel with local occlusions, a finite element model has been developed to study velocity fields including reverse flow regions, pressure profiles and wall shear stress distributions for different Reynolds numbers, bifurcation angles and lumen reductions. The flow analysis has been extended to include a new submodel for the pseudo-transient formation of plaque at sites and deposition rates defined by the physical characteristics of the flow. Specifically, simulating the onset of atherosclerotic lesions, sinusoidal plaque layers have been placed in areas of critically low wall shear stresses, and simulating the growth of particle depositions, plaque layers have been added in a stepwise fashion in regions of critically high and low shear. Thus two somewhat conflicting hypothetical correlations between critical wall shear stress levels and atheroma have been tested and a solution has been postulated. The validated computer simulation model is a predictive tool for analyzing the effects of local changes in wall curvature due to surgical reconstruction and/or atherosclerotic lesions, and for investigating the design of aortic bifurcations which mitigate plaque formation. 相似文献

A finite element formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations for three dimensional flow is presented. The equations are solved using the finite element method. The model is constructed from a cast of a human aortic bifurcation. The numerical problems introduced by solving the equation system are discussed and special attention is paid to the selection of the linear equation solver. The simulations of the steady blood flow patterns in an aortic bifurcation is shown. The results of the numerical analysis are presented as three dimensional plots of velocity vectors, wall shear vectors, streamlines and pressure isobars. The flow simulations are done for Reynolds number 10. The flow patterns found in the bifurcation model are discussed in connection with proposed theories to explain the event of early atherosclerosis. 相似文献

Laser Doppler anemometer measurements of pulsatile flow in a model carotid bifurcation 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Hemodynamics at the human carotid bifurcation is important to the understanding of atherosclerotic plaque initiation and progression as well as to the diagnosis of clinically important disease. Laser Doppler anemometry was performed in a large scale model of an average human carotid. Pulsatile waveforms and physiologic flow divisions were incorporated. Disturbance levels and shear stresses were computed from ensemble averages of the velocity waveform measurements. Flow in the common carotid was laminar and symmetric. Flow patterns in the sinus, however, were complex and varied considerably during the cycle. Strong helical patterns and outer wall flow separation waxed and waned during each systole. The changing flow patterns resulted in an oscillatory shear stress at the outer wall ranging from -13 to 9 dyn cm-2 during systole with a time-averaged mean of only -0.5 dyn cm-2. This contrasts markedly with an inner wall shear stress range of 17-50, (mean 26) dyn cm-2. The region of transient separation was confined to the carotid sinus outer wall with no reverse velocities detected in the distal internal carotid. Notable disturbance velocities were also time-dependent, occurring only during the deceleration phase of systole and the beginning of diastole. The present pulsatile flow studies have aided in identifying hemodynamic conditions which correlate with early intimal thickening and predict the physiologic level of flow disturbances in the bulb of undiseased internal carotid arteries. 相似文献

Pulsatile non-Newtonian flow characteristics in a three-dimensional human carotid bifurcation model. 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Numerical analysis of flow phenomena and wall shear stresses in the human carotid artery bifurcation has been carried out using a three-dimensional geometrical model. The primary aim of this study is the detailed discussion of non-Newtonian flow velocity and wall shear stress during the pulse cycle. A comparison of non-Newtonian and Newtonian results is also presented. The applied non-Newtonian behavior of blood is based on measured dynamic viscosity. In the foreground of discussion are the flow characteristics in the carotid sinus. The investigation shows complex flow patterns especially in the carotid sinus where flow separation occurs at the outer wall throughout the systolic deceleration phase. The changing sign of the velocity near the outer sinus wall results in oscillating shear stress during the pulse cycle. At the outer wall of the sinus at maximum diameter level the shear stress ranges from -1.92 N/m2 to 1.22 N/m2 with a time-averaged value of 0.04 N/m2. At the inner wall of the sinus at maximum diameter level the shear stress range is from 1.16 N/m2 to 4.18 N/m2 with a mean of 1.97 N/m2. The comparison of non-Newtonian and Newtonian results indicates unchanged flow phenomena and rather minor differences in the basic flow characteristics. 相似文献

A numerical finite-difference analysis is made of a plane simple-pulsatile flow past a symmetrical bifurcation which contains an asymmetrical smooth-contoured stenosis in the trunk. In essence, such a situation could represent a stenosed common carotid artery immediately upstream from the carotid junction. The flow is unbalanced; two-thirds of it exits or enters through the lower branch. The effect on various flow parameters of the stenosis itself and on changes in its severity is investigated by comparing the results for a severe stenosis, a mild stenosis, and no stenosis. The simple-pulsatile forcing function is specified in terms of an oscillatory and a steady Karman number. To obtain a significant amount of backflow, the oscillatory trunk Karman number is taken as 1000 compared to the steady value of 250. The frequency of oscillation is stipulated by a trunk Stokes number of 10 pi. The numerical procedures utilize the vorticity-transport version of the Navier-Stokes governing equations. A non-orthogonal coordinate transform allows the calculations to be made in a rectangular grid where the central difference expressions are easily applied. The results are presented in terms of both kinematic and kinetic parameters. The variation in the basic kinematic variables of stream function and vorticity is shown by temporal sequences of contour plots at times of peak flow and during the flow reversal stages as well as by several velocity vector plots. Kinetic results are given in terms of the temporal variation in shear stresses along boundaries. The peak shears are found to occur at the zenith of the stenosis at times of peak flow: the value for the severe stenosis is twice as large as that for the mild stenosis. The midline pressure distribution in the trunk and the centerline pressure distributions in the branches are also included. 相似文献
