1. Heterozygotes TfF/TfE of voles did not differ in body weight, they had higher hematocrit value (males and females), higher beta-globulin fraction (males) or higher gamma-globulin fraction (females). 2. A smaller variability of parameters studied was observed in heterozygotes than in homozygotes. Small and similar variability occurred in hematocrit value and beta-globulins while higher variability occurred in body weight and gamma-globulins. 3. In common voles the faster migrating E system of transferrin may have a higher capacity for iron transport than the F system. 4. Seasonal changes of hematocrit value in vole populations seems to result from genetical and physiological variability. 5. Sexual and seasonal changes in beta-globulin level appear to be related to changes in sexual activity of the animals during the seasons. 6. In autumn, low weight of animals and high serum gamma-globulin level, with the same physiological variability of these two parameters, suggest the synthesis of gamma-globulins with tissue (muscle) proteins. 7. Autumnal increase of gamma-globulin level seems to be very important, taking into consideration the role of the protein in water retention and its filtration from the tissues. Very high level of the protein fraction may play a role in winter high mortality of voles.  相似文献

During 1997-1999, we collected serum samples from 156 common eider (Somateria mollissima) females incubating eggs in the Finnish archipelago of the Baltic Sea. We used serum chemistry profiles to evaluate metabolic changes in eiders during incubation and to compare the health and nutritional status of birds nesting at a breeding area where the eider population has declined by over 50% during the past decade, with birds nesting at two areas with stable populations. Several changes in serum chemistries were observed during incubation, including (1) decreases in serum glucose, total protein, albumin, beta-globulin, and gamma-globulin concentrations and (2) increases in serum uric acid, creatine kinase, and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations. However, these changes were not consistent throughout the 3-yr period, suggesting differences among years in the rate of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein utilization during incubation. The mean serum concentrations of free fatty acids, glycerol, and albumin were lowest and the serum alpha- and gamma-globulin levels were highest in the area where the eider population has declined, suggesting a role for nutrition and diseases in the population dynamics of Baltic eiders.  相似文献

Determining the best ratio of females to males of an insect's natural enemy is important for maximising population increase and promoting population establishment of a natural enemy. In this study, copulation behaviour, fecundity, progeny fitness and rate of population increase for the flea beetle, Agasicles hygrophila Selman & Vogt (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), were compared at different female percentage treatments (i.e., 80%, 66.7%, 50%, 33.3% and 20% females). The results showed that the copulation frequency and duration in males decreased, whereas those in females increased as the number of males increased. At 20%, 33.3% and 66.7% females, the rates of population increase were 3.4-, 2.17- and 0.79-fold higher than that at 50% females. Females at 20% and 33.3% were found to be optimal for mass rearing of the beetle.  相似文献

The effect of various social environments on sociosexual behavior was examined in six young female cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus oedipus) and in three established breeding females. Behavioral observations and hormonal samples were collected on young females while they were living with their families, when they were isolated from conspecifics, and after they were paired with an unrelated male. While living with the family, all females showed a suppression of fertility and low frequencies of sociosexual behavior. Following removal from the family, isolated females displayed an increase in rate of scent marking and an increase in hormonal levels. When young females were paired with males, they were exposed to scent secretions from their natal families, from an unfamilar family, and from a control for a total of 24 weeks. After pairing, hormonal levels increased dramatically, and ovarian cyclicity began. An increase in sociosexual behavior and elevated levels of scent marking accompanied this physiological change. Newly paired females had higher rates of affiliative behavior and scent marking than did established breeding females. However, both newly paired and established breeding males were more likely to initiate contact, grooming bouts, and social sniffing than were females. Time to first ovulation was later in females who were exposed to scent secretions from their natal families than it was in those females given a control for the first 8 weeks following pairing. No female conceived during exposure to scent secretions. However, once normal ovarian cycling had begun or a pregnancy was established, exposure to scent secretions had no effect. Thus, the social environment influences the fertility, sociosexual behavior, and pair bond formation of cotton-top tamarins. In addition, chemical stimuli found in the scent secretions produced by the natal family are most likely involved in reproductive suppression.  相似文献

The gonadosomatic index of sobaity Sparidentex hasta fits well with the natural spawning season of February-March. At 12 and 24 months all the population matured as males. However, during this time, between April-September intersex gonads were seen. From October of the third year of life, females were seen for the first time. These changes in the histology of the gonads were correlated with the hormonal profile. Testosterone showed no significant correlation with sex but 11-ketotestosterone correlated very well with the mature male gonads and thus can be used for sexing. Oestradiol-17β higher in sex reversed individuals (females) in the spawning season than in males. The sequence of events in the protandrous sex change of this fish during the first two spawning seasons is male → intersex → male. However, during the third spawning season (age 36–37 months) this sequence is male →intersex → male or female (10–17%).  相似文献

Summary Cytogenetic studies and clinical investigations were performed in 44 cases of pure gonadal dysgenesis. The mean height of the females with the 46,XY karyotype was 6.6 cm higher than that of the females with the 46,XX karyotype. The greater difference found between normal males and females from the general population could therefore be related mainly to the hormonal influence of the testes during pre- and postnatal life.  相似文献

A field experiment was performed implanting female pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) during the nest-building period with silastic tubes containing 17 beta-estradiol. Control females were given empty silastic tubes. The pied flycatcher is a polygamous and polyterritorial bird species. During two successive breeding seasons effects on reproductive behavior and the reproductive systems of males were studied. Reproductive success was not affected by the treatment. Estradiol treatment of females caused marked changes in the behavior of males, increasing aggressive and mate-guarding behavior. The results of the present study also support the idea that cuckoldry is a problem for the territory holder. Fewer males paired with estradiol-treated females established secondary territories, and significantly more of the polyterritorial males from the experimental population showed up in the home-territory when a simulated territorial intrusion was performed there. Control males were much more successful in getting a second female to breed. Spermatogenesis and hormonal cycles (DHT, LH, and testosterone) in males were not prolonged as a result of estradiol treatment of the females.  相似文献

Maternal modification of offspring sex in birds has strong fitness consequences, however the mechanisms by which female birds can bias sex of their progeny in close concordance with the environment of breeding are not known. In recently established populations of house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), breeding females lay a sex-biased sequence of eggs when ambient temperature causes early onset of incubation. We studied the mechanisms behind close association of incubation and sex-determination strategies in this species and discovered that pre-ovulation oocytes that produce males and females differed strongly in the temporal patterns of proliferation and growth. In turn, sex-specific exposure of oocytes to maternal secretion of prolactin and androgens produced distinct accumulation of maternal steroids in oocyte yolks in relation to oocyte proliferation order. These findings suggest that sex difference in oocyte growth and egg-laying sequence is an adaptive outcome of hormonal constraints imposed by the overlap of early incubation and oogenesis in this population, and that the close integration of maternal incubation, oocytes' sex-determination and growth might be under control of the same hormonal mechanism. We further document that population establishment and the evolution of these maternal strategies is facilitated by their strong effects on female and offspring fitness in a recently established part of the species range.  相似文献

Abstract In gynodioecious plants, hermaphrodite and female plants co‐occur in the same population. In these systems gender typically depends on whether a maternally inherited cytoplasmic male sterility factor (CMS) is counteracted by nuclear restorer alleles. These restorer alleles are often genetically dominant. Although plants of the female morph are obligatorily outcrossing, hermaphrodites may self. This selfing increases homozygosity and may thus have two effects: (1) it may decrease fitness (i.e. result in inbreeding depression) and (ii) it may increase homozygosity of the nuclear restorer alleles and therefore increase the production of females. This, in turn, enhances outcrossing in the following generation. In order to test the latter hypothesis, experimental crosses were conducted using individuals derived from four natural populations of Silene vulgaris, a gynodioecious plant. Treatments included self‐fertilization of hermaphrodites, outcrossing of hermaphrodites and females using pollen derived from the same source population as the pollen recipients, and outcrossing hermaphrodites and females using pollen derived from different source populations. Offspring were scored for seed germination, survivorship to flowering and gender. The products of self‐fertilization had reduced survivorship at both life stages when compared with the offspring of outcrossed hermaphrodites or females. In one population the fitness of offspring produced by within‐population outcrossing of females was significantly less than the fitness of offspring produced by crossing females with hermaphrodites from other populations. Self‐fertilization of hermaphrodites produced a smaller proportion of hermaphroditic offspring than did outcrossing hermaphrodites. Outcrossing females within populations produced a smaller proportion of hermaphrodite offspring than did crossing females with hermaphrodites from other populations. These results are consistent with a cytonuclear system of sex determination with dominant nuclear restorers, and are discussed with regard to how the mating system and the genetics of sex determination interact to influence the evolution of inbreeding depression.  相似文献

Topical application of different juvenile hormone analogs (JHA) or of a mixture of stereoisomers of insect juvenile hormone (JH) 1 and 3 to fed virgin female Ornithodoros moubata immediately after feeding induced vitellogenesis and egg-laying in up to 70% of treated females. In controls only 13.7% oviposited. The eggs were sterile, with abnormal shape, but their number versus the weight of engorged females was normal or sometimes greater than in mated females. However, preoviposition period was longer than in mated females.

It was more difficult to induce egg-laying by similar topical applications 100 days after feeding of virgin females. A maximum of 58% of ovipositing females was obtained with a very high dosage of JH mixture (500 fig). Injection of this mixture into the females was more potent; 15 to 50 fig induced oviposition in about 60% of the females. The preoviposition period was also longer than in control females.

Our results suggest the presence of a JH-like substance which is involved in the hormonal control of vitellogenesis. However, since natural isomers of JH were much less efficient than isomeric mixtures or JHA, we suppose that the natural tick hormone does not correspond to JH, but rather to a JH-like substance.  相似文献

Protein electrophoresis, hematological and cholinesterase values were determined in 32 nestling free-living peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) (15- to 27-days-old) in order to establish normal reference values for this population. The following values (mean +/- SD) were observed: prealbumin 0.31 +/- 0.04 g/dl, albumin 1.25 +/- 0.06 g/dl, alpha1 and alpha2-globulin 0.23 +/- 0.02 and 0.16 +/- 0.02 g/dl respectively, beta-globulin 1.02 +/- 0.05 g/dl, gamma-globulin 0.060 +/- 0.08 g/dl, total protein 3.79 +/- 0.18 g/dl, 21.26 +/- 1.30 white blood cells/microl (1 x 10(3)), 2.17 +/- 0.07 red blood cells/microl (1 x 10(6)), packed cell volume 37.58 +/- 0.82%, hemoglobin 20.96 +/- 0.29 g/dl, heterophils 61.14 +/- 2.50% and cholinesterase 1,184 +/- 75 IU/L. There were no difference in any of these parameters among males and females. The hematological values obtained could be considered as representative values in free-living nestling peregrine falcons.  相似文献

Blood protein analysis including total serum protein and albumin by chemical methods, fibrinogen estimation and serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) was performed on the leopard seal, Hydrurga leptonyx. The most commonly observed SPE pattern was eight fractions designated albumin, alpha(1a), alpha(1b), alpha(2a), alpha(2b), beta(1), beta(2) and gamma-globulin. Significantly higher total serum protein and albumin concentrations, as determined by chemical methods, and significantly higher alpha(2)-globulin concentrations, determined by SPE, were seen in free-ranging male seals compared to females, whilst significantly higher beta-globulin concentrations were seen in female seals. Season of sampling influenced fibrinogen and beta(2)-globulin concentrations, whereas there were no significant differences in any protein concentrations with moult status. Qualitative comparison of SPE traces of leopard seals in Antarctica with "sick" individuals in NSW, Australia revealed obvious differences, as did quantitative comparison of protein concentrations where differences in alpha(1), alpha(2), beta(1), beta(2), and gamma-globulin concentrations were seen. These findings suggest that SPE is a useful tool for investigating serum proteins in the leopard seal, with applications for the investigation of "sick" individuals and the assessment of variation in homeostasis. This technique could also be used to identify the presence of environmental stressors, subclinical disease and physiological variation within specific seal populations.  相似文献

In an increasingly urbanized world it is imperative that we understand how wildlife responds to this novel anthropogenic landscape, both at the individual‐ and population‐level. Urbanization generally reduces biodiversity, but can also favour particular species and increase their abundance relative to wild populations. When population density increases, so too does the frequency and cost of social interactions. We studied Australian water dragons (Intellagama lesueurii), a species common in urban, semi‐natural and natural areas, to firstly test the prediction that urban populations occur at higher densities, and then determine the consequences of urbanization for combat rates (quantified using wounding) and bite force. We established that urban populations are denser than ones from semi‐natural and natural habitats. We also recorded significantly more wounds in females from urban populations than females from both natural and semi‐natural populations. Urban males also had significantly higher incidence of wounding than males from natural populations. We did not find a difference in male or female bite force among any populations across the urban‐natural gradient. Overall, we found evidence that urbanization results in a higher population density of water dragons and more frequent conspecific combat, but this was not associated with an increase in bite force. These finding suggests that there may be a physiological cost to living in urban habitats related to increased contest rates and wounding.  相似文献

A pedigree approach is used to estimate the effective population size yn two population cages of the butterfly, Bicyclus anynana. Each cage was founded with 54 individually marked adults of each sex. Matings were recorded over a 3‐day period. Eggs were then collected from each female over a similar period before the numbers of hatching larvae were counted to assess progeny number. The males showed a higher variance in reproductive success than the females. Since about one‐quarter of all females mated more than once, we also examined the pattern of sperm precedence using molecular markers or, in separate crossing experiments, wing pattern mutants. Both instances of complete first and last male sperm precedence, as well as of sperm mixing, were found. In some crosses a ‘leakiness’ was found in which some of the early eggs laid by a female were fertilized by a male partner which was subsequently completely unsuccessful. However, the estimates of effective population size were largely unaffected by the pattern of sperm precedence. Estimates for Ne : N in each cage were close to 0.60. The possibility of obtaining comparable estimates in selected natural populations of butterflies is discussed.  相似文献

Age peculiarities of reproductive activity and fertility during the reproductive season as well as the hormonal and the testis spermatogenic function were studied in silver foxes Vulpes vulpes from the population selected for a long time for domesticated behavior. It has been established that during the first reproductive season the male sexually activity (the coupled females’ number) was reduced as compared with subsequent seasons, and about one third of the males were not coupled at all with females; however, the young (one-year old) males did not differ from adults by the testis weight, ejaculate spermatozoid number, and the fraction of abnormal spermatozoids. Comparison of indexes of spermatogenesis and the testicular hormonal function in the young males with a decreased and “normal” sexual activity did not reveal any statistically significant differences. It is suggested that the decreased (or absent) sexual activity in young silver fox males can be a response of the population to the human-created environment.  相似文献

We have reported that there is a sex difference in the behavioral response to social defeat in hamsters. While previously defeated male hamsters fail to display normal territorial aggression and instead produce submissive/defensive behavior, a phenomenon that we have termed conditioned defeat (CD), only a small portion of previously defeated females exhibit CD. In Experiment 1, we tested the hypothesis that CD varies over the estrous cycle and found that previously defeated female hamsters tested on diestrus 2 and proestrus were more likely to exhibit CD than were females tested on diestrus 1 and estrus. In Experiment 2, we found that regardless of hormonal status, non-defeated females displayed normal territorial aggression, indicating that the behavioral changes observed in Experiment 1 were not due to a cyclic variation in submissive behavior independent of a previous defeat encounter. In Experiment 3, we found that females tested 4 days after defeat responded similarly to those tested 1 day after defeat suggesting that the hormonal status of females on the day of testing is a more important determinant of the behavioral response to defeat than is the hormonal status on the day of defeat training. Finally, in Experiment 4, we monitored anxiety-like behaviors in diestrous 1 and proestrous females in an open field arena and found that there was no effect of cycle on any of the observed behavioral measures, suggesting that the observed differences in CD are not the result of differences in generalized anxiety-like behaviors across the estrous cycle.  相似文献

In order to investigate the potential role of the kisspeptin system in the entrainment of reproduction in Atlantic cod, qPCR assays were developed for kiss2 and its receptor kissr4. mRNA expression was monitored in the brain over a full reproductive cycle in 2 populations of males and females: 1) a maturing population (exposed to simulated natural photoperiod, SNP) and 2) a maturation inhibited population (exposed to constant light, LL). Pituitary expression of gonadotropin subunit mRNA (fshβ and lhβ) was also measured. Results from this study indicated no clear temporal pattern in expression of kiss2 or kissr4 mRNAs in either population of cod, however acute elevations were apparent in maturing (SNP) individuals, namely an elevation in kiss2 in vitellogenic females and spermiating males and spikes in kissr4 during early vitellogenesis in females and spermatogenesis in males. Gonadotropin mRNA expression displayed strong amplitudinal changes over time with fshβ and lhβ mRNA expression increasing towards spawning in maturing individuals. No firm conclusions on the role of the kisspeptin system in cod puberty can be drawn at this stage, however mRNA increases in kiss2 and kissr4 may elude to conserved kisspeptin functions in cod and opens up interesting avenues on potential gender specific functions.  相似文献

Intraspecific microhabitat segregation is expected to arise when there are age- or sex-specific differences in predation risk. The degree to which conspecific predation (cannibalism) can generate this risk, however, is poorly understood. In this paper, we examine microhabitat use, cannibalism, and individual responses to the presence of conspecifics in Thermosphaeroma thermophilum, an endangered isopod crustacean species that is endemic to a single, thermal spring in Socorro, N.M. USA. In samples from the natural habitat, juveniles (mancas) were found mainly on vegetation, whereas adults were found predominantly on bottom sediments. Females were found on vegetation more often than males. In laboratory containers without refuges, males cannibalized females, males and females cannibalized mancas, and mancas cannibalized each other, even in the presence of alternative food. When placed in containers provided with refuges, mancas actively avoided adults. We suggest, therefore, that cannibalism in T. thermophilum generates age-, size-, and sex-specific predation risks which are responsible for microhabitat segregation between mancas and adults, and between males and females. Since interspecific predation in the spring is negligible, cannibalism appears to play a significant role in population regulation and behavioral evolution in this species. We recommend, given the current “endangered” status of this species, that microhabitat heterogeneity be maintained in its native spring because it provides refuges from cannibalism and may support a larger and more viable natural population. Summary Pollen movement is often restricted in natural populations, and insufficient pollination is a potential constraint on sexual reproduction in outcrossing species. Seed-set should decrease with increased distance from the pollen source in outcrossing plants. This prediction was tested using females of the clonal, gynodioecious herb Glechoma hederacea in three natural populations. In controlled pollinations, both hermaphrodites and females had similar high percentages of fruit-set and seed-set. In a natural population where a female clone was isolated from the nearest hermaphroditic clone by c. 100 m, fruit-set was low (1%). In another population where hemaphroditic clones were rare and female clones had a patchy distribution, fruit-and seed-set in females were pollen-limited and decreased with increased distance from the nearest pollen source. The estimated mean pollen dispersal distance was 5.9 m when calculated on fruit-set and 5.3 m when calculated on seed-set. The most frequent pollinators were bumblebees. The mean and median distances moved by pollinators between ramets were 0.13 m and 0.05 m. In a third population where female clones were isolated from the nearest hermaphrodites by more than 200 m, fruit-set was 0%. After introduction of 16 hermaphroditic ramets in the center of the female clone, fruit-set varied between 0% and 100% in individual female ramets. Fruit-set decreased with increased distance from the pollen source. The mean and median pollen movement distances were 1.06 m and 0.54 m.  相似文献

Body size, performance and fitness in galapagos marine iguanas   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Complex organismal traits such as body size are influenced byinnumerable selective pressures, making the prediction of evolutionarytrajectories for those traits difficult. A potentially powerfulway to predict fitness in natural systems is to study the compositeresponse of individuals in terms of performance measures, suchas foraging or reproductive performance. Once key performancemeasures are identified in this top-down approach, we can determinethe underlying physiological mechanisms and gain predictivepower over long-term evolutionary processes. Here we use marineiguanas as a model system where body size differs by more thanone order of magnitude between island populations. We identifiedforaging efficiency as the main performance measure that constrainsbody size. Mechanistically, foraging performance is determinedby food pasture height and the thermal environment, influencingintake and digestion. Stress hormones may be a flexible wayof influencing an individual's response to low-food situationsthat may be caused by high population density, famines, or anthropogenicdisturbances like oil spills. Reproductive performance, on theother hand, increases with body size and is mediated by highersurvival of larger hatchlings from larger females and increasedmating success of larger males. Reproductive performance ofmales may be adjusted via plastic hormonal feedback mechanismsthat allow individuals to assess their social rank annuallywithin the current population size structure. When integrated, these data suggest that reproductive performance favors increasedbody size (influenced by reproductive hormones), with an overalllimit imposed by foraging performance (influenced by stresshormones). Based on our mechanistic understanding of individualperformances we predicted an evolutionary increase in maximumbody size caused by global warming trends. We support this predictionusing specimens collected during 1905. We also show in a common-gardenexperiment that body size may have a genetic component in iguanids. This ‘performance paradigm’ allows predictions aboutadaptive evolution in natural populations.  相似文献
