Short penis condition was diagnosed as the cause of impotentia coeundi in 10 bulls, aged 2.5 to 5 yr. The diagnosis was based on observation of service attempts, measurement of the extended penis, and elimination of other causes of impotence. Measurements of the penis were made under general inhalation anesthesia or pudendal nerve block. These measurements were then compared with those of 10 control bulls, matched for age and breed and having no history of impotence; the latter measurements were likewise obtained under general anesthesia, pudendal nerve block or sedation. with propionyl promazine. Similar measurements were obtained from 10 yearling bulls under propionyl promazine sedation. Measurements obtained under general anesthesia or pudendal nerve block in the same bull were usually similar and repeatable, while phenothiazine tranquillization produced incomplete and variable relaxation of the retractor penis muscles. The dimension best correlated with impotence due to short penis was the distance from the tip of the extended penis to the preputial orifice in its resting position. In 10 bulls in which short penis was diagnosed, this distance was 10 to 22 cm, while in 10 control bulls with no history of impotence it was 25 to 42 cm. The distances from the tip of the extended penis to the preputial reflection (fornix) and to the neck of the scrotum were also shorter in affected than in control bulls. Although observation of service ability remains the cornerstone of diagnosis of short penis, a presumptive diagnosis can be made if penile protrusion of less than 25 cm can be obtained in an adult bull under general anesthesia or pudendal nerve block. Phenothiazine tranquillization is suitable for screening examinations but not for definitive diagnosis. 相似文献

Two experiments were designed to determine the efficacy of intraglandular antibiotic treatment in beef bulls. Experiment 1 was designed to evaluate the glandular tissue reaction to intraglandular antibiotic treatment. Experiment 2 was conducted to determine the efficacy intraglandular injection of antibiotics for the treatment of naturally occurring cases of vesicular adenitis. Healthy beef bulls (n=15), 2 and 3 years of age, were randomly allocated to three equal treatment groups to receive 10% of the daily recommended parenteral dose of penicillin, ceftiofur, or oxytetracycline in a volume of 6 mL injected directly into one of the vesicular glands. Ultrasonography was performed before, immediately after, and at 24, 48 and 168 h after intraglandular injection. The size and hardness of vesicular glands injected with oxytetracycline was greater (P<0.01) than those injected with ceftiofur. Ultrasonographic pixel intensity increased (P<0.01) after treatment with antibiotics, especially after treatment with oxytetracycline or penicillin. In Experiment 2, yearling beef bulls with clinical vesicular adenitis (n=14) were referred to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine for treatment. Eight bulls had unilateral and six had bilateral vesicular adenitis. The most common isolate was Arcanobacterium pyogenes. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was isolated from one bull. Bulls were subjected to rectal palpation and ultrasonography of the vesicular glands, semen collection by electroejaculation, and intraglandular treatment with ceftiofur (n=13) and if necessary, a second intraglandular treatment of penicillin (n=6). One bull was treated only with an initial intraglandular injection of penicillin. Bulls were evaluated once a week over 6 weeks by palpation of the glands, and evaluation of semen. All bulls recovered from vesicular adenitis after 3-6 weeks. There was a difference in the amount of pus (P=0.042), leukocytes (P<0.001) and blood (P=0.003) present in ejaculates from before treatment to 3 weeks after treatment. Pixel intensities in ultrasonographic images of healthy or affected vesicular glands, whether treated or untreated, did not change over time. Intraglandular injection of ceftiofur in yearling bulls via the ischiorectal fossa was effective for treating vesicular adenitis. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the detection limit of a PCR test for Tritrichomonas foetus, to investigate the effect of sampling method, guanidinium thiocyanate (GuSCN), and sample storage, and to confirm the accuracy of the test on field samples. Serial 10-fold dilutions of culture material were used to determine the detection limit. For the sample handling trial, five positive bulls were sampled by sheath washing and scraping on six occasions over a period of 18 days (n=29 samples) and eight control bulls were sampled three, four or six times (n=28 samples). Samples were cultured, while portions with and without GuSCN were subjected to DNA extraction within 6h, after 30 h and after 5 days at 4 degrees C. PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis was performed. A two-tailed chi-square test was used to test for differences between treatments. The PCR assay showed a specificity of 98%. Its sensitivity declined with storage time, from 90% at 6h to 31% at 5 days. Sampling method and GuSCN had no effect on test sensitivity. The detection limit of the assay was 100 organisms. Parallel testing of 193 field samples gave complete agreement between culture and PCR results. 相似文献

The head-neck system is highly complex from a biomechanical and musculoskeletal perspective. Currently, the options for recording the recruitment of deep neck muscles in experimental animals are limited to chronic approaches requiring permanent implantation of electromyographic electrodes. Here, we describe a method for targeting deep muscles of the dorsal neck in non-human primates with intramuscular electrodes that are inserted acutely. Electrode insertion is guided by ultrasonography, which is necessary to ensure placement of the electrode in the target muscle. To confirm electrode placement, we delivered threshold electrical stimulation through the intramuscular electrode and visualized the muscle twitch. In one animal, we also compared recordings obtained from acutely- and chronically-implanted electrodes. This method increases the options for accessing deep neck muscles, and hence could be used in experiments for which the invasive surgery inherent to a chronic implant is not appropriate. This method could also be extended to the injection of pharmacological agents or anatomical tracers into specific neck muscles. 相似文献

Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules
X. J. Cai N. Valiyaparambath P. Nixon A. Waghorn T. Giles T. Helliwell 《Cytopathology》2006,17(5):251-256
OBJECTIVE: To examine the accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules and compare the inadequacy rates for ultrasound-guided and freehand FNAC. METHODS: A retrospective study of 434 patients with thyroid nodules who underwent diagnostic FNAC over a 2-year period. Cytological diagnoses have been compared with the histological assessment of resection specimens in 69 cases. RESULTS: The inadequacy rate was significantly lower from ultrasound guided FNAC (24/373 cases, 6.4%) than from freehand FNAC (8/61 cases, 13.1%) (P = 0.043). Seventy-six percentage of patients had a non-neoplastic cytological diagnosis and, after multidisciplinary review, the patients were reassured and assigned to clinical follow-up. Sixty-seven patients had a resection for cytological appearances consistent with non-neoplastic disease (n = 34), suspicious of follicular neoplasia (n = 23), or suspicious of malignancy (n = 10), and two patients had resections following inadequate cytology with ultrasound appearances suspicious of a neoplasm. The overall accuracy of FNAC analysis for malignancy was 97.0%, with sensitivity 83.3%, specificity 98.0%, positive predictive value 71.4% and negative predictive value 98.4%. The overall accuracy of FNAC analysis for the prediction of neoplasia was 97.5%, with sensitivity 80.5%, specificity 97.8%, positive predictive value 89.2% and negative predictive value 95.9%. Difficulties in cytological diagnosis were associated with lymphoid infiltrates and with degenerative changes in follicular adenomas. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound-guided FNAC has a significantly lower yield of inadequate aspirates than palpable FNAC. The ability of FNAC to predict neoplasia in 89% patients and to exclude neoplasia in 95.9% patients makes an important contribution to the multidisciplinary assessment of patients. 相似文献

Five Zebu x British crossbred bulls 17 months of age and of uniform liveweight (320+/-3 kg) were used to study testosterone responses to single intramuscular doses of exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The eight dose levels used were 0, 31.25, 62.5, 125, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 ng GnRH/kg live weight. Plasma samples for hormone responses were collected at 30-minute intervals from zero to three hours and at one-hour intervals from three to seven hours postinjection. Luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone responses were measured as peak heights or as areas under response curves. Increasing the dosage of GnRH increased the time to reach the peak LH response, the height and duration of the response, and the area under the response curve. The maximum LH peak height was reached by the 1 mug/kg dose. In contrast to LH, testosterone responses reached the same peak heights (two hours postinjection of GnRH) for all doses of GnRH. The only effect of increased dosage was to increase the duration of response. Testosterone responses showed repeatable differences (P<0.01) between animals, but LH responses did not. It was demonstrated that the testosterone status of bulls can be accurately assessed by simply measuring testosterone in a single plasma sample collected two to three hours after the intramuscular injection of 100 mug or more (dose unimportant) of GnRH per bull. 相似文献
