Terrestrial nemerteans thirty years on

The present paper records changes in the reported distribution and abundance of terrestrial nemerteans during the last 30 years. New records are reported from the Isles of Scilly, Bermuda and New Zealand of species previously only known elsewhere. Human activity, especially the increased importation and exportation of plants between countries, has probably led to terrestrial nemerteans, as well as other organisms, becoming introduced into many new localities. However, the conservation outlook is not hopeful because of a global loss of appropriate habitat, particularly forests. Today three species (Geonemertes rodericana Gulliver, 1879, Pantinonemertes agricola Willemoes-Suhm, 1874 and Antiponemertes allisonae Moore, 1973) are feared to be extinct, and none of the extant species seem to be as abundant as they once were. Behavioural changes in Antiponemertes pantini (Southgate, 1954) under arid conditions may be associated with heavy gregarine infestations.     

Polyelectrolytes,thirty years later

This contribution contains a personal account of the early days of polyelectrolyte research, a discussion of the configurational properties of polyelectrolyte chains, a brief review of polyetectrolyte theories and some remarks concerning recent experimental and theoretical developments as well as future trends.     

The melatonin rhythm generating system: developmental aspects

Development of the melatonin rhythm generating system, including the suprachiasmatic nucleus, sympathetic innervation, and biochemistry of the pineal gland is reviewed. This system offers investigators an interesting opportunity to study the effects of drugs, hormones, and other factors on the developmental appearance of specific structures and biochemical parameters, and to determine the role, if any, each has in the development of an integrated neural system.     

Several aspects of current research into the role of calcium in plant physiology

Calcium plays a variety of significant roles in the life cycle of plants. This review describes a brief summary of several examples of such roles in an attempt to provide some common ground relevant to the roles of calcium, with emphasis on the coupling between various stimuli and their respective responses. The selected topics include the regulation of turgor pressure, tropic responses, the cell cycle, and cell motility.     

昆虫杆状病毒表达载体系统与疫苗研制的30年回顾

1983年12月,一篇关于用昆虫杆状病毒感染昆虫细胞表达重组人β干扰素文章的发表,标示了杆状病毒表达载体系统(Baculovirus expression vector system,BEVS)的诞生。迄今为止,已采用BEVS表达生产了数千种重组蛋白,其中7种已被成功用于商品化人用或兽用疫苗的抗原。仅对30年来基于BEVS的疫苗研制作一论述。     

Axelrod, the pineal and the melatonin hypothesis: lessons of 50 years to shape chronodisruption research

With key work in the 1950s and 1960s, the 1970 Nobel laureate Julius Axelrod made major contributions to the development of pineal science. Looking back at some of his accomplishments in and for the field, we feel that lessons can be derived for future work regarding impairments of the pineal gland's and melatonin's many functions for promoting health and preventing disease in man.     

Forty years of achievement in French research on digestive physiology in the pig.

The contribution of the research group set up by Rérat in the early 1960s in Jouy-en-Josas, and then expanded to Rennes, is summarised. As digestive processes are a major key to the nutritional status of monogastric animals, original methodologies based on advanced experimental surgery were developed in the pig to quantify the digestion and absorption yield, to know their factors of variation, and to understand their physiological and nutritional consequences. The group also extended its expertise to the control of food intake, the role of the nervous system and regulatory peptides, and several biomedical gut-related topics.
