Adults of Clinostomum marginatum freshly collected from a heron, Ardea herodias, were examined using transmission electron microscopy. Specimens from the mouth of the bird were encrusted with bacteria that were not removed by washing unless the saline contained antibiotics. There was no evidence that the attached bacteria were damaging to the trematode tegument. Three species of Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from the worm surfaces and identified; Achromobacter sp. was present in pure culture on 4 of 6 original cultures and in mixed culture with Edwardsiella tarda and Enterobacter agglomerans in 2 cultures. These species and 3 unidentified species of bacteria were isolated from the oral epithelium of the heron. Microorganisms were not seen attached to the surfaces of worms recovered from the esophagus. Because E. tarda and E. agglomerans were the only species isolated from the heron esophagus, the intimate bacterial-worm association in the heron mouth may be due specifically to Achromobacter sp.  相似文献

The separation of Clinostomum complanatum Rudolphi, 1814 and Clinostomum marginatum Rudolphi, 1819 has long been unclear. Recent data confirm the validity of the junior species, C. marginatum , by ~ 1% differences in its 18S rDNA sequences. We collected adults and metacercariae of C. complanatum and C. marginatum and found reliable morphological differences in the genital complex at both developmental stages. In addition, we identified basic morphometrics (distance between suckers, body width) in metacercariae that may be useful for discriminating the species. The morphological differences were supported by the comparison of sequences of internal transcribed spacers of ribosomal DNA and of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) from 39 specimens. In 36 specimens, the average divergence between the species was 7.3% in ITS and 19.4% in COI sequences. Two specimens from North America and 1 from Europe had sequences that did not allow them to be clearly allied with either species.  相似文献

Over a fifteen month period, beginning October, 1974, approximately 13 500 centrarchids were examined for evidence of infection with metacercaria of Clinostomum marginatum. Species checked included Lepomis macrochirus, L. gulosus, L. auritus, Pomoxis nigromaculatus and Micropterus salmoides. The study site was Par Pond (South Carolina, U.S.A.), an 1120 ha reservoir receiving thermal effluent from a nuclear production reactor. Except for the largemouth bass, M. salmoides , infection percentages among the five species were less than 1%. Among bass, infection varied seasonally, being highest from January to June. From the spring highs of approximately 25 %, the percentages dropped to lows of < 10% in July and August; there was a jump in September-October to another peak of 30% and then a steady decline through December when infection percentages were again less than 10%. Neither body condition nor length of the bass were related to infection percentage or metacercaria density. Infection percentage could not be related to the influence of thermal effluent. Infection percentages did vary from location to location within the Par Pond system. A significant rank correlation could be established between infection percentage and the amount of littoral zone present in the locality from which the bass were taken. It is suggested that the local 'bay effects' are the result of limited home and foraging ranges of the bass in relation to the amounts of littoral zone present in various locations of the reservoir.  相似文献

This study on yellow perch (Perca flavescens) examines a series of enzymatic markers and the relative weights of pyloric caeca and visceral lipids, their response to changes in feeding regime and their potential use to infer recent changes in growth rate and fish condition. Fish were exposed to four different feeding regimes for 12 weeks resulting in specific growth rates ranging from 0.3% to 3.5% (%/day). Growth and condition responded rapidly to changes in ration and the weight of pyloric caeca and visceral lipids reflected increased feed intake. Growth rate was correlated with muscle citrate synthase and caecal nucleoside-diphosphate kinase activities, whereas condition was correlated with muscle citrate synthase and lactate dehydrogenase activities and with caecal glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. Results showed that enzyme activities and biometric parameters responded rapidly to increased feed intake, but the response was slower when food intake decreased. Plateaus were attained for both condition and visceral lipid index, but the relative weight of pyloric caeca continued to increase throughout the experimental period. Results from this study could, in principle, be used to infer recent growth and energy status in wild yellow perch and thus provide an indicator of food availability in their environment.  相似文献

An unusually high frequency (64%) of European Cuckoo Cuculus canorus parasitism was found in Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus clutches in central Hungary. Sixty-four per cent of the parasitized clutches contained one Cuckoo egg, 23% contained two, 10% had three and 3% had four. This means that 58% of the Cuckoo eggs were found in multiply parasitized clutches. In multiple parasitism the laying second Cuckoo removed an egg from the clutch randomly, so preferred neither the host eggs, nor the concurrent Cuckoo egg. Host response towards the parasitic eggs showed 66% acceptance, 12% ejection, 20% desertion and 2% egg burial. We found great variation in both the host and the parasitic egg colour and pattern. This reduces the chance that the parasitic egg's appearance matched that of the hosts' but, in spite of this, almost perfect mimesis was found in 28% of the Cuckoo eggs. Poorly mimetic Cuckoo eggs were more frequently rejected by Great Reed Warblers than parasite eggs that were very similar to the host eggs. This high level of mimicry sometimes makes it difficult for the observer to identify the parasitic egg, especially when it is similar in size to the host eggs. It is also difficult for the host, as shown by the relatively high recognition error and ejection cost.  相似文献

Metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum excysted from yellow perch, Perca flavescens, appear to have two systems for transporting glucose across the tegument, facilitated diffusion and active transport. These systems were distinguished by their differential sensitivities to Na+, phlorizin and phloretin. In Ringer's saline for cold-blooded vertebrates, 0.1 mm phlorizin and phloretin were incomplete, but similarly effective inhibitors of glucose uptake in 3 min incubations; worms accumulated in 1 h nonmetabolized 3-O-methylglucose against an apparent concentration difference demonstrating the active transport component. In Na+-free saline, phlorizin sensitivity and active transport capacity disappeared, but a phloretin sensitive, Na+-independent component remained. The Vmax and K1 of the Na+-independent system were 3.0 ± 0.54 μmol/g ethanol-extracted dry wt/h, and 0.8 ± 0.36 mm, respectively. Vmax and K1 of the Na+-dependent system, estimated by subtracting the Na+-independent values from those obtained in Ringer's saline, were 1.3 ± 0.27 μ mol/g ethanol-extracted dry wt/h, and0.7 ± 0.36mm, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the potential for competition between age 0 white perch Morone americana and yellow perch Perca flavescens in field-enclosure experiments. In 1986 and 1987, different densities of white perch and yellow perch were stocked into cages in the western basin of Lake Erie and their growth responses determined. Fish were weighed and measured pre- and post-stocking. In 1986 when fish were food-limited, individual growth of both species were negatively affected by increased total fish density; yellow perch to a greater extent. In 1987, experiments were carried out later in the year at lower temperatures. Yellow perch were shown to feed and continue to grow at lower water temperatures than white perch. We conclude that competition in summer may be mitigated in the fall because of differences in thermal optima between these two species.  相似文献

The abundance of a species is not constant across its geographical range; it has often been assumed to decrease from the centre of a species’ range toward its margins. The central assumption of this “favourable centre” model is tested for the first time with parasites, using different species of helminth parasites exploiting fish as definitive hosts. Data on prevalence (percentage of hosts that are infected) and abundance (mean no. parasites per host) were compiled for 8 helminth species occurring in 23 populations of yellow perch Perca flavescens, from continental North America. For each parasite species, correlations were computed between latitude and both local prevalence and abundance values. In addition, the relationships between the relative prevalence or abundance in one locality and the distance between that locality and the one where the maximum value was reported, were assessed separately for each species to determine whether abundance tends to decrease away from the presumed centre of the range, where it peaks. For both the cestode Proteocephalus pearsei and the acanthocephalan Leptorhynchoides thecatus, there was a positive relationship between prevalence or abundance and the latitude of the sampled population. There was also a significant negative relationship between relative prevalence and the distance from the locality showing the maximum value in P. pearsei, but no such pattern was observed for the other 7 parasite species. Since this single significant decrease in prevalence with increasing distance from the peak value may be confounded by a latitudinal gradient, it appears that the distribution of abundance in parasites of perch does not follow the favourable centre model. This means that the environmental variables affecting the density of parasites (host availability, abiotic conditions) do not show pronounced spatial autocorrelation, with nearby sites not necessarily providing more similar conditions for the growth of parasite populations than distant sites.  相似文献

The soil-transmitted helminths are the most common helminthic infections, affecting about one-fourth of the world's population. There is a significant genetic component to susceptibility to infection with these organisms. Substantial changes in plasma cytokine levels are associated with helminthic infections, and there may be significant genetic components to this cytokine variation. Six plasma cytokine levels were assessed for 367 members of a single pedigree from the Jirel population of eastern Nepal. This population experiences moderate rates of infection with geohelminths. Sex, age, helminthic infection, infection with Giardia, and presence of a household latrine were considered as covariates in all analyses of the cytokine data. The analyses of the single Jirel pedigree revealed significant heritabilities for IFN-gamma (h2 = 0.654+/-0.096), TNF-alpha (h2 = 0.458+/-0.101), IL-2 (h2 = 0.583+/-0.101), IL-4 (h2 = 0.700+/-0.095), IL-5 (h2 = 0.676+/-0.087), and IL-10 (h2 = 0.597+/-0.093). The ratios of IL-4 to IFN-gamma and of IL-10 to IFN-gamma were used as indicators of the degree of type 2 bias in immunological response; analyses of these variables indicated that approximately 40-60% of the variation (h2 = 0.400-0.577) in these derived measures of relative type 2/type 1 response is due to genetic factors.  相似文献

The present study determined the behavioural salinity preference of a freshwater stock of juvenile yellow perch Perca flavescens acclimated to salinities of 0 and 10. The preferred salinities ranged between 7·3 and 13·0 (mean ± s.d . = 10·4 ± 1·7; n = 13) with no significant effect of acclimation salinity. The results showed that juvenile P. flavescens prefers near isoosmotic salinities, which could be due to a lowered energetic cost of osmoregulation.  相似文献

Metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum obtained from naturally infected Perca flavescens were cultured by 5 methods. In vitro cultivation at 37 C in twice daily changes of Tyrode's, Na-poor Tyrode's, and Eagle's media failed to produce ovigerous adults after 4-5 days. Metacercariae placed on the chorioallantois of week-old chick embryos at 37 C migrated to the albumen. Only 8 of 123 worms recovered were ovigerous after 4-7 days in ovo. Best success occurred with metacercariae injected in groups of 4 or 6 into the abdominal cavities of male A/J mice. Despite liver lesions and strong inflammatory responses in the host, all 174 worms recovered were ovigerous after 4-8 days. None of 41 mice died prematurely from the procedure or the parasites.  相似文献

Water‐soluble factors associated with walleye Sander vitreus predation on either yellow perch Perca flavescens or fathead minnows Pimephales promelas markedly increased the growth rate of P. flavescens. The findings suggest that P. flavescens possess an inducible growth‐promoting mechanism regulated by water‐born chemicals. It may be possible to increase the growth rate of farm‐raised P. flavescens by manipulating this system.  相似文献

Unlike juvenile F1 male bluegill Lepomis macrochrus × female green sunfish L. cyanellus , maximized episodes of compensatory growth (CG) in 2 year yellow perch Perca flavescens did not surpass control masses because internal regulation caused abrupt appetite reduction upon catch-up. Together, the hybrid sunfish study and present work indicate that CG-maximizing feeding schedules and absence of an internal growth limiting mechanism are both required to produce substantial growth overcompensation (GOC). The less vigorous and less resilient CG responses of the yellow perch relative to those of the similarly fed hybrid sunfish appear indicative of the lack of GOC capacity in the former. This contrast, and results of previous studies are interpreted to suggest that GOC capacity may be limited to early life stages of fishes which have a substantial reproductive potential but are at high risk of mortality due to their small size. The possibility that GOC capacity is time-of-year-dependent and species-specific is considered also. Food deprivation periods that produced the strongest CG responses differed for male (2 days) and female (12 days) yellow perch. Among controls fed without restriction, growth rate and growth efficiency of female yellow perch exceeded those of males two-fold, however, males showed a greater capacity to catch-up to same-sex controls when undergoing CG. A feeding schedule using maintenance feeding v. food deprivation to elicit CG yielded the most rapid catch-up to control masses in the yellow perch. Such feeding schedules may produce even greater GOC than was achieved previously in hybrid sunfish, where feeding schedules involving food deprivation were employed.  相似文献

Yellow perch ( Perca flavescens ) have become one of the focal points in aquaculture in the Great Lakes region of the United States. In this paper, we reviewed existing information on nutrition of yellow perch and identified critical areas in need of development. Yellow perch are small at hatching (4–7 mm total length), and are difficult to feed. Zooplankton cultures remain the only viable means of mass propagation, but larvae can be trained to accept formulated feeds in ponds at the age of 30–45 days. Few nutritional requirements exist for yellow perch, thus there are no diets formulated specifically for this species. The current recommendations are use of feeds formulated for trout and salmon. Ongoing research efforts are underway that will improve our ability to feed yellow perch at all life history stages.  相似文献

We determined the diet of 1 to 1 1/2 a old yellow perch (Perca flavescens) in a Quebec reservoir, relative to occurrences of available prey species and size classes of prey. We used Schindler-Patalas trap samples taken over four 24-h intervals between June and September 1981 to determine size distribution of available prey species. Relative abundances and size distribution of ingested prey species were determined from examination of gut contents of perch trapped by gill nets during the same time intervals. Electivity values of different prey species and of different size classes of prey were determined. Larger zooplankton prey (e.g.Epischura andLeptodora) were generally preferred but there was considerable variability in diet among individual fish that cannot be explained by patterns of prey availability. Within particular size classes of prey, perch have definite preferences, e.g. when perch consume small prey, they preferBosmina to other similar-sized prey. By the criteria of gel electrophoresis, ion-exchange chromatography, and reverse-phase HPLC, yellow perch protamine behaves as a single component. This observation was confirmed by automated Edman degradation which gave a single unambiguous amino acid sequence PRRRRHAARPVRRRRRTRRSSRVHRRRRAVRRRR. Yellow perch protamine has 34 amino acids, including 21 arginines. It has two histidines, neither of which interrupts an arginine tract. It is unusual among fish protamines in not having a serine or threonine N-terminal to the second arginine tract, and is unique in not being a mixture of components.  相似文献

The quantity of food in the complete digestive tract of young-of-the-year yellow perch Perca flavescens varied between samples taken at the same time of the day over 2–3 consecutive days, resulting in a 1·7- to 2·5-fold variation of in situ estimates of daily ration. Changes in the internal morphology of parasitized copepods sampledin the Gulf of Naples from 1986 to 1988 were investigated usingboth light and transmission electron microscopy. The most commonand devastating form of infection was due to the parasitic dinoflagellateSyndinium, which induced gross modifications in the internaland external morphology of the host population. The parasitereduced fecundity and longevity of infected individuals, whichmainly included juvenile and female populations of the copepodParacalanus parvus. Infection rates for this species were ashigh as 12% for. juveniles and 13% for adult females for theperiod investigated. Infection by the parasitic dinoflagellateBlastodinium induced less negative effects on the reproductivebiology of their hosts. This pathogen did not lead to sexualcastration and oogonal development appeared normal.
