Introduction of biological control agents into New Zealand is regulated under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO). The legislation is strongly focused on the health and safety of people and the environment. HSNO is implemented by the Environmental Risk Management Authority, a quasi-judicial body of 6–8 people appointed by the Minister for the Environment. The process by which biological control applications are received and processed is described. Two case studies of weed biological control agents which have been through the HSNO process, and the scientific issues that arose in considering the environmental safety of these agents are discussed. The case studies presented are the applications to release the gall fly Procecidochares alani (Diptera: Tephritidae) to control mist flower Ageratina riparia, and three biological control agents, Macrolabis pilosellae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Cheilosia urbana, and Cheilosia psilophthalma (Diptera: Syrphidae) for biological control of hawkweeds (Hieracium spp.). In a previous paper (Bull. Math. Biophysics,22, 257–262, 1960), an expression for the probability that a car jumps off a road as a function of the speed and the size of the car was derived mostly from geometric and kinematic considerations, introducing only the reaction time as a biological parameter. In subsequent papers (Bull. Math. Biophysics,29, 181–186, 187–188, 1967) a more detailed study was made of the exact shape of the tracking curve of the car which involved several biological parameters of the driver. In the present paper the results of the previous studies are combined, and a more general equation for the probability of jumping off the road is obtained. This probability, as in the earlier study, increases with the speedv, widths o and lengthl o of the car, and decreases with widths of the lane. However, this probability also depends on several parameters which characterize the psychobiological constitution of the driver. Unpublished experiments by Ehrlich, which corroborate the general conclusions, are briefly described.  相似文献

In this review, we examine the functional roles of microbial symbionts in plant tolerance to cold and freezing stresses. The impacts of symbionts on antioxidant activity, hormonal signaling and host osmotic balance are described, including the effects of the bacterial endosymbionts Burkholderia, Pseudomonas and Azospirillum on photosynthesis and the accumulation of carbohydrates such as trehalose and raffinose that improve cell osmotic regulation and plasma membrane integrity. The influence of root fungal endophytes and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on plant physiology at low temperatures, for example their effects on nutrient acquisition and the accumulation of indole‐3‐acetic acid and antioxidants in tissues, are also reviewed. Meta‐analyses are presented showing that aspects of plant performance (shoot biomass, relative water content, sugar and proline concentrations and Fv/Fm) are enhanced in symbiotic plants at low (?1 to 15 °C), but not at high (20–26 °C), temperatures. We discuss the implications of microbial symbionts for plant performance at low and sub‐zero temperatures in the natural environment and propose future directions for research into the effects of symbionts on the cold and freezing tolerances of plants, concluding that further studies should routinely incorporate symbiotic microbes in their experimental designs.  相似文献

Context: Endocrinological factors have been recently described to affect respiratory mechanics.

Objective: To review recent literature data, most of all obtained by the end-inflation occlusion method, describing the effects of molecules of endocrinological interest such as endothelin, erythropoietin and renin-angiotensin, on respiratory mechanics parameters.

Methods: The papers considered in this review were found by inserting in Pubmed/Medline the following indexing terms: hormones, endothelin, erythropoietin, angiotensin and respiratory mechanics.

Results: It was found that the above cited molecules, beside their well known physiological main effects, exhibit influences on respiratory mechanics, most of all on the airflow resistance, which was described to be increased by endothelin and angiotensin, and decreased by erythropoietin.

Conclusions: A number of molecules of biological interest exhibit unexpected influences on respiratory mechanics. The clinical effects depend on the consequences of modified inspiratory pressure values the respiratory muscles have to perform for a given breathing pattern.  相似文献

The theory of organismic sets, developed in previous papers (Bull. Math. Biophysics,29, 139–152; 389–393; 643–647) is further generalized. To conform better with some biological and sociological facts the basic definitions are made more general. The conclusion is reached that every organismic setS o is in general the union of three disjoined subsetsS o1 ,S o2 andS o3 . Of these the subsetS o1 , called the “core” is equivalent to an organismic set defined in previous publications. Its functioning is essential for the functioning ofS o . The subsetsS o2 andS o3 , taken alone, are not organismic sets. The first of them is responsible for such biological or sociological functions which are not necessary for the “immediate” survival ofS o but which are important for adaptation to changing environment and are therefore essential for a “long range survival.” The second one,S o3 , is responsible for biological or social functions which are irrelevant for the survival ofS o . Biological and sociological examples ofS o2 andS o3 are given. In addition to the fundamental theorem established in the first of the above mentioned papers, three new conclusions are derived. One is that in organismic sets of order higher than zero not all elements are specialized. The second is that every organismic set of order higher than zero is mortal. The third is that with increasing specialization the intensities of some activities in some elements ofS o are reduced. Again the biological and sociological examples are given. At the end some very general speculations are made on the possible relation between biology and physics and on the possibility of “relationalizing” physics.  相似文献

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which relies on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by a photosensitizer to kill cancer cells, has become a non-invasive approach to combat cancer. However, the conventional aggregation-caused quenching effect, as well as the low ROS generation ability of photosensitizers, restrict their biological applications. In this work, a new Ir(III) complex with a dendritic ligand has been strategically designed and synthesized by ingenious modification of the ancillary ligand of a reported Ir(III) complex ( Ir-1 ). The extended π-conjugation and multiple aromatic donor moieties endow the resulting complex Ir-2 with obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity and bathochromic emission. In in vitro experiments, importantly, Ir-2 nanoparticles exhibit the excellent photoinduced ROS generation capabilities of O2•− and 1O2, as well as excellent biocompatibility and the lipid droplets (LDs) targeting feature. This study would provide useful guidance to design efficient Ir(III)-based photosensitizers used in biological applications in the future.  相似文献

Two indices, P1 and I, employing ranked data and following the beta distribution, are described. These indices, which are true statistical measures of water quality, can be used with any set of parameters. Further, these indices correlate highly with biological and subjective-engineering assessments of water quality. Three indices, employing raw data and based on the chi-square distribution, are described. Two of these, B1 and B2, do not have sufficient discrimination to serve as general measures of water quality, although they have use in specific circumstances. The index C has been found to be a measure of excessive variability (at a station), and can be used to quantitatively compare the (data) variability among stations. The five indices described here are evaluated against a set of operational criteria which a mathematically sound index should meet.  相似文献

Natural products are considered a good choice in the biological control of mosquitoes because they are an effective way to eliminate larvae and prevent an increase in mosquito numbers, while simultaneously not polluting the environment or damaging health. This investigation was designed to study the potential toxicity of three species of algae, Caulerpa racemosa (Weber-van Bosse, 1909), Padina boryana (Thivy, 1966), and Turbinaria ornata (Turner J. Agardh, 1848), on the larvae of Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector of dengue and Zika viruses. Among the studied species, Caulerpa racemosa showed the greatest effectiveness in eradicating A. aegypti larvae with an LC50 = 43.5 ppm, followed by Padina boryana with an LC50 = 51.93 ppm. Both species proved to be excellent candidates as a source of larvicidal agents and could be used commercially in mosquito control programs as eco-friendly biopesticides. The combined activity of different mixtures against mosquito larvae was expressed as the coeffective factor (C.F.). C.F. values showed that the joint activity of insect growth regulator Dudim in combination with Caulerpa racemosa and Padina boryana extracts produced degrees of potentiation effects and degrees of additive effects were obtained with Dudim in combination with Turbinaria ornata extract.  相似文献

Tetrahaem cytochromes c 3 from sulfate-reducing bacteria have revealed exquisite complexity in their ligand binding properties and they couple the cooperative binding of two electrons with the binding of protons. In this review, the molecular mechanisms for these cooperative effects are described, and the functional consequences of these cooperativities are discussed in the context of the general mechanisms of biological energy transduction and the specific physiological metabolism of Desulfovibrio.  相似文献

The effect of antibiotics and metabolic inhibitors on mycelial growth ofBotrytis cinerea was followed. Inhibitors of protein synthesis, chloramphenicol, erythromycin and tetracycline inhibit growth or sporulation ofBotrytis cinerea. Ethidium bromide, 5-fluorouracil, phenylethylalcohol and K 20 cause granulation, vacuolization and undulation of hyphae. 2,4-Dinitrophenol, boromycin, macrotetrolides, monensin, scopathricin and TX2 at subfungistatic concentrations induce intensive branching of hyphal tipsi.e. at the site of synthesis of the cell wall. In older hyphae grown in the absence of the antibiotics the branching begins after their addition, particularly in the septum region. When comparing the results referred to here with those obtained previously and on the basis of literature data it may be assumed that the changes in polarity of growth ofBotrytis cinerea might be caused primarily or secondarily by impairing membrane functions and formation of cell walls.  相似文献

An experimental life support system (ELSS) was constructed to study the interactive effects of multiple stressors on coastal and estuarine benthic communities, specifically perturbations driven by global climate change and anthropogenic environmental contamination. The ELSS allows researchers to control salinity, pH, temperature, ultraviolet radiation (UVR), tidal rhythms and exposure to selected contaminants. Unlike most microcosms previously described, our system enables true independent replication (including randomization). In addition to this, it can be assembled using commercially available materials and equipment, thereby facilitating the replication of identical experimental setups in different geographical locations. Here, we validate the reproducibility and environmental quality of the system by comparing chemical and biological parameters recorded in our ELSS with those prevalent in the natural environment. Water, sediment microbial community and ragworm (the polychaete Hediste diversicolor) samples were obtained from four microcosms after 57 days of operation. In general, average concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients (NO3?; NH4+ and PO4?3) in the water column of the ELSS experimental control units were within the range of concentrations recorded in the natural environment. While some shifts in bacterial community composition were observed between in situ and ELSS sediment samples, the relative abundance of most metabolically active bacterial taxa appeared to be stable. In addition, ELSS operation did not significantly affect survival, oxidative stress and neurological biomarkers of the model organism Hediste diversicolor. The validation data indicate that this system can be used to assess independent or interactive effects of climate change and environmental contamination on benthic communities. Researchers will be able to simulate the effects of these stressors on processes driven by microbial communities, sediment and seawater chemistry and to evaluate potential consequences to sediment toxicity using model organisms such as Hediste diversicolor.  相似文献

Modulating composition and shape of biological membranes is an emerging mode of regulation of cellular processes. We investigated the global effects that such perturbations have on a model eukaryotic cell. Phospholipases A2 (PLA2s), enzymes that cleave one fatty acid molecule from membrane phospholipids, exert their biological activities through affecting both membrane composition and shape. We have conducted a genome-wide analysis of cellular effects of a PLA2 in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system. We demonstrate functional genetic and biochemical interactions between PLA2 activity and the Rim101 signaling pathway in S. cerevisiae. Our results suggest that the composition and/or the shape of the endosomal membrane affect the Rim101 pathway. We describe a genetically and functionally related network, consisting of components of the Rim101 pathway and the prefoldin, retromer and SWR1 complexes, and predict its functional relation to PLA2 activity in a model eukaryotic cell. This study provides a list of the players involved in the global response to changes in membrane composition and shape in a model eukaryotic cell, and further studies are needed to understand the precise molecular mechanisms connecting them.  相似文献

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) have attracted considerable interest nowadays due to their wide range of applications. However, very little attention has been paid to the application of nanomaterials as potential elicitors for production of valuable metabolites. Herein, aiming to earn insight into effects of nanomaterials on secondary metabolite biosynthesis by medicinal fungi, we evaluated the influence of GBNs on growth and production of ganoderic acid (GA) by Ganoderma lucidum in submerged culture. Graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and rGO/Fe3O4 nanocomposite were synthesized successfully and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The prepared nanomaterials were added to the culture of G. lucidum at final concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mg/L on Day 5. The results showed that the elicitation of G. lucidum with GO and rGO decreased the cell dry weight and GA production slightly, especially in higher concentrations. However, rGO/Fe3O4 nanocomposite not negatively affected cell growth and improved GA production. G. lucidum growth rate responded to elicitation experiments differently and depended on the type of nanomaterials and their concentrations, but almost all GBNs caused an increase in GA content (mg/100 mg dry weight). Also, field emission scanning electron microscopy morphological study showed that under elicitation, mycelia were more condensed and tightly stacked together. The findings from this study may suggest that GBNs in low concentrations could be applied as elicitors to secondary metabolites production from higher fungus, but further environmental, physiological, and biological studies required.  相似文献

Abstract

Although there is scientific consensus that radiofrequency (RF) exposure at high intensity can cause thermal effects, including well-established adverse health effects, there is still considerable controversy on whether low-intensity RF exposure can cause biological effects, especially adverse health effects. The objective of this paper is to describe several reported “non-thermal” effects that were later shown to be due to a weak thermal effect or an experimental artifact by properly conducted and thorough follow-on scientific research. First, the multiple factors that can cause different RF energy absorption in biological tissues are reviewed and second, several examples of experimental artifacts in published papers are described to demonstrate the importance of paying attention to dosimetry and temperature control. For example, isolated nerve response studies show that when temperature of the RF-exposed tissues is controlled, effects disappeared. During RF exposure, conductive electrodes routinely used in physiological studies have been shown to cause field intensification at the tips or contacts of the electrodes with biological tissue; thus, the RF exposure at the site of measurement could be much higher than the incident field. In some in vitro studies, a lack of temperature uniformity in RF-exposed cell cultures and rate of heating explain changes originally reported to be due to low-level RF exposure. In other studies, detailed dosimetry studies have identified artifacts that explain the reasons why so-called “non-thermal” effects were mistakenly reported. Researchers should look for explanations for their own findings, and not expect others to figure out what was the reason for their observed effects.  相似文献

Gibbs surface energy has long been considered to be an important parameter in the design of fouling-resistant surfaces for marine applications. Rigorous testing of the hypothesis that settlement is related to Gibbs surface energy however has never been accomplished, due mainly to practical limitations imposed by the necessary combination of surface engineering and biological evaluation methods. In this article, the effects of surface charge and Gibbs surface energy on the settlement of cyprids of an important fouling barnacle, Balanus amphitrite, were evaluated. Settlement assays were conducted on a range of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) (CH3-, OH-, COOH-, N(CH3)3 +-, NH2-terminated), presented in gold-coated polystyrene well plates, varying in terms of their surface charge and Gibbs surface energy. Contrary to contemporary theory, settlement was not increased by high-energy surfaces, rather the opposite was found to be the case with cyprids settling in greater numbers on a low-energy CH3- SAM compared to a high-energy OH- SAM. Settlement was also greater on negatively-charged SAMs, compared to neutral and positively-charged SAMs. These findings are discussed in the context of data drawn from surfaces that varied in multiple characteristics simultaneously, as have been used previously for such experiments. The finding that surface charge, rather than total surface energy, may be responsible for surface selection by cyprids, will have significant implications for the design of future fouling-resistant materials.  相似文献

The use of biopesticides formulated from entomopathogenic fungi is a strategy utilised in integrated pest management programmes. The microorganisms used in these biopesticides are isolated from terrestrial organisms and ecosystems. However, bioprospecting in marine environments may lead to the discovery of promising fungi for pest control. In this study, marine fungi were identified and evaluated for the control of Brevicoryne brassicae. The effects of the most virulent isolate so identified on the mortality of aphids were compared to the effects of bioinsecticides that were formulated from fungal strains of Beauveria bassiana (Bovemax®) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Methamax®). Moreover, lethal and sublethal effects of this isolate on B. brassicae biological parameters were also examined. The isolates were identified as Aspergillus versicolor, Aspergillus sydowii (isolates 1 and 2), Penicillium dipodomyicola, and Trichoderma harzianum. The fungal strain A. versicolor was the most virulent fungal species, causing 85.9% mortality in B. brassicae at 24 h. The mortality rate caused by A. versicolor was similar to that caused by Bovemax® and Methamax® at concentrations of 105 conidia mL?1, and superior to that caused by Methamax® at a concentration of 109 conidia mL?1. The exposure of B. brassicae to CL25 (0.32 × 103) of A. versicolor did not affect the net reproductive rate (Ro), average generation time (T), intrinsic rate of population growth (rm), and finite rate of population increase (λ). This is the first study to demonstrate that A. versicolor isolated from a marine environment is a promising candidate for the biological control of agricultural pests.  相似文献

The milieu of male germline stem cells (mGSCs) is characterized as a low-oxygen (O2) environment, whereas, their in-vitro expansion is typically performed under normoxia (20–21% O2). The comparative information about the effects of low and normal O2 levels on the growth and differentiation of caprine mGSCs (cmGSCs) is lacking. Thus, we aimed to investigate the functional and multilineage differentiation characteristics of enriched cmGSCs, when grown under hypoxia and normoxia. After enrichment of cmGSCs through multiple methods (differential platting and Percoll-density gradient centrifugation), the growth characteristics of cells [population-doubling time (PDT), viability, proliferation, and senescence], and expression of key-markers of adhesion (β-integrin and E-Cadherin) and stemness (OCT-4, THY-1 and UCHL-1) were evaluated under hypoxia (5% O2) and normoxia (21% O2). Furthermore, the extent of multilineage differentiation (neurogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation) under different culture conditions was assessed. The survival, viability, and proliferation were significantly (p?<?0.05) improved, thus, yielding a significantly (p?<?0.05) higher number of viable cells with larger colonies under hypoxia. Furthermore, the expression of stemness and adhesion markers were distinctly upregulated under lowered O2 conditions. Conversely, the differentiated regions and expression of differentiation-specific genes [C/EBPα (adipogenic), nestin and β-tubulin (neurogenic), and COL2A1 (chondrogenic)] were significantly (p?<?0.05) reduced under hypoxia. Overall, the results demonstrate that culturing cmGSCs under hypoxia augments the growth characteristics and stemness but not the multilineage differentiation of cmGSCs, as compared with normoxia. These data are important to develop robust methodologies for ex-vivo expansion and lineage-committed differentiation of cmGSCs for clinical applications.
