Seven hundred fifty-four strains of mycobacteria were examined using 97 characters, and a “Hypothetical Mean Organism” (HMO) was prepared for each species using numerical classification. The species could be defined as a group of strains showing a mean S-value of 90% or more to a HMO and showing mean S-values of 89% or less to other HMOs. The following species were recognized: (1) M. tuberculosis, combining M. tuberculosis and M. bovis into one species; (2) M. kansasii; (3) M. novum; (4) M. avium, combining M. avium, M. nonchromogenicum, M. gastri, M. intracellulare and M. scrofulaceum into one species; (5) M. marinum; (6) M. thermoresistibile; (7) M. chitae; (8) M. borstelense; (9) M. abscessus; (10) M. fortuitum; (11) M. phlei; (12) M. aurum; (13) M. parafortuitum; (14) M. lacticola; (15) M. smegmatis. Dendrogram of the species showed two main stems, indicating that the genus Mycobacterium be divided into two subgenera, subgenus Mycobacterium (from M. tuberculosis to M. chitae) and subgenus My cornycobacterium (from M. borstelense to M. smegmatis). Some discrepancy was noted between the results of numerical classification using HMOs and that of the “proper” numerical classification, and this discrepancy is discussed.  相似文献

The genus Etiennea Matile‐Ferrero is synonymized with Hemilecanium Newstead (Hemiptera: Coccidae). We base this decision on a morphological comparative study of adult females, adult males and first‐instar nymphs (crawlers), including a phylogenetic analysis. We recovered a sister group relationship between the type species of the two genera, Etiennea villiersi Matile‐Ferrero and Hemilecanium theobromae Newstead; that is, each was more closely related to the other than either was to other species in their respective genera. All species hitherto included in Etiennea are transferred to Hemilecanium: H. bursera (Hodgson & Kondo) comb. nov., H. cacao (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. candelabra (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. capensis (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. carpenteri (Newstead) comb. nov., H. cephalomeatus (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. combreti (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. ferina (De Lotto) comb. nov., H. ferox (Newstead) comb. nov., H. gouligouli (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. halli (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. kellyi (Brain) comb. nov., H. madagascariensis (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. montrichardiae (Newstead) comb. nov., H. multituberculum (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. petasus (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. sinetuberculum (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. tafoensis (Hodgson) comb. nov., H. ulcusculum (Hodgson) comb. nov., and H. villiersi (Matile‐Ferrero) comb. nov. Keys to the adult females of all 26 species and known adult males and first‐instar nymphs are provided. The adult males and first‐instar nymphs of H. theobromae Newstead and E. villiersi Matile‐Ferrero are for the first time fully described and illustrated. One new potential pest species of Hemilecanium, H. uesatoi Kondo & Hardy sp. nov., which was collected on three islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan, is described and illustrated based on the adult female, adult male and first‐instar nymph. We discuss evidence that H. uesatoi is a new introduction to the Ryukyu Archipelago. The first‐instar nymphs of Hemilecanium can be divided into two distinct morphological groups, the petasus group and the theobromae group.  相似文献

A comparative study of the North American salt marshes between Magdalena Plain (Baja California, 24° N)_and the north of San Francisco (California 38° N) is made in order to establish relationships between floristic and zonal gradients. The second chromosome Co-122 (Corato-122) extracted from a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster caught in Corato (Apulia) and maintained in the laboratory over the SM5 balancer chromosome, proved to carry: (1) a Segregation distorter factor, named Sd Co; (2) a recessive lethal mutation, termed mle-Co (maleless-Corato), which causes the lethality of only males; (3) another recessive lethal mutation, l(2)Co (lethal (2) Corato), probably arisen in the laboratory by mutation. This mutation accounts for the diminished recovery of homozygous females observed in the stock.The genetic features and the cytological analysis of the SD chromosome are reported, as well as the genetic localization of mle-Co and 1(2)Co and their cytogenetic mapping. An allelism test has ascertained that mle-Co is allelic to mle, a male-specific mutation described by Fukunaga et al., 1975. The tight linkage of mle-Co and 1(2)Co with Sd is discussed from the standpoint of population genetics.  相似文献

The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D is high among obese subjects. Further, low 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration has been postulated to be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, although its relation with insulin‐sensitivity is not well investigated. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between 25(OH)D concentration and insulin‐sensitivity, using the glucose clamp technique. In total, 39 subjects with no known history of diabetes mellitus were recruited. The association of 25(OH)D concentration with insulin‐sensitivity was evaluated by hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp. Subjects with low 25(OH)D (<50 nmol/l) had higher BMI (P = 0.048), parathyroid hormone (PTH) (P = 0.040), total cholesterol (P = 0.012), low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (P = 0.044), triglycerides (P = 0.048), and lower insulin‐sensitivity as evaluated by clamp study (P = 0.047). There was significant correlation between 25(OH)D and BMI (r = ?0.58; P = 0.01), PTH (r = ?0.44; P < 0.01), insulin‐sensitivity (r = 0.43; P < 0.01), total (r = ?0.34; P = 0.030) and LDL (r = ?0.40; P = 0.023) (but not high‐density lipoprotein (HDL)) cholesterol, and triglycerides (r = 0.45; P = 0.01). Multivariate analysis using 25(OH)D concentration, BMI, insulin‐sensitivity, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, as the cofactors was performed. BMI was found to be the most powerful predictor of 25(OH)D concentration (r = ?0.52; P < 0.01), whereas insulin‐sensitivity was not significant. Our study suggested that there is no cause–effect relationship between vitamin D and insulin‐sensitivity. In obesity, both low 25(OH)D concentration and insulin‐resistance appear to be dependent on the increased body size.  相似文献

Six naturally occurring but rare alleles of sn-glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (Gpdh) in Drosophila melanogaster have been investigated in this study. They all belong to a class of Gpdh UF (ultra-fast) alleles, because their electrophoretic mobilities are faster than that of the Gpdh F (fast) allele. The Gpdh UF variants are widespread, and have been reported from five continents. DNA sequence analysis has shown that the change in electrophoretic mobility was in each allele caused by a single amino acid residue substitution in the encoded protein. In the Xiamen UF allele it is a substitution of lysine (AAA) to asparagine (AAT) in exon 1 (residue 3). An asparagine (AAT) to aspartate (GAT) change was found in exon 6 (residue 336) in the Iowa UF and Netherlands UF alleles. The mobility of the Raleigh UF allele was altered by a valine (GTG) to glutamate (GAG) substitution in exon 3 (residue 76). Two mutations were detected in the Brazzaville UF allele: a lysine (AAG) to methionine (ATG) substitution in exon 2 (residue 68) is responsible for the ultra-fast phenotype of this variant, while a tyrosine (TAT) to phenylalanine (TTT) substitution in exon 4 (residue 244) is not expected to alter the electrophoretic mobility of the encoded protein. These results indicate that the Gpdh UF alleles originate from different mutational events, and only two of them — Iowa UF and Netherlands UF — might share a common ancestry. The GPDH activity of the Iowa UF allele is intermediate between those of the Gpdh S and Gpdh F control stocks. The other Gpdh UF variants have lower activities than the controls: Xiamen UF -83%, Raleigh UF -80% and Brazzaville UF -73% of the Gpdh F control.  相似文献

The fixation of trans-(NH3)2Cl2 Pt(II) to poly(I)·poly(C) at low rb (< 0.05) leads to the formation of two complexed species. The major species (ca. 82% of bound platinum) involves coordination of platinum to a single hypoxanthine base, while the other species involves coordination of two hypoxanthine bases, which are either far apart on the same strand or on separate poly(I) strands, to the platinum. These same two species are found after reaction with poly(I), as are two other species throughout the entire rb range studied (rb = 0–0.30). The latter two species are assigned to trans-Pt bound to two bases on a poly(I) strand with (a) one or (b) two free bases between the two bound bases. These two species, (a) and (b), account for ca. 35% of the bound platinum, although the 1:1 species remains dominant (ca. 55%). These two additional species are observed at high rb (>0.075) after reaction with poly(I)·poly(C) but as very minor species. They are formed by reaction with melted poly(I) loops. Also at high rb, we have observed a shifted cytidine H5 resonance arising from interaction of trans-Pt with a melted loop of poly(C). Most probably, this arises from an intramolecular poly(I) to poly(C) crosslink. Results from the reaction of trans-Pt with poly(C) are presented for comparison.  相似文献

Abstract Phytomyza Fallén is the largest genus of leaf‐mining flies (Agromyzidae), with over 530 described species. Species of the superficially similar genus Chromatomyia Hardy have been included in Phytomyza by some authors and the status of the genus remains uncertain. Using 3076 bp of DNA sequence from three genes [cytochrome oxidase I (COI), CAD (rudimentary), phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD)] and 113 exemplar species, we identified and tested the monophyly of host‐associated species groups in Phytomyza and Chromatomyia and investigated the phylogenetic relationships among these groups. Chromatomyia is polyphyletic and nested largely within Phytomyza; two small groups of species, however, are related more closely to Ptochomyza and Napomyza. Therefore, we synonymize Chromatomyia syn.n. , Ptochomyza syn.n. , and Napomyza syn.n. with Phytomyza, recognizing Ptochomyza, Napomyza and Phytomyza sensu stricto as subgenera of Phytomyza. We recognize five major clades within Phytomyza sensu stricto that comprise the majority of species ascribed previously to Chromatomyia and Phytomyza. Many species groups recognized previously were recovered as monophyletic, or virtually so, but some (e.g. robustella and atomaria groups) required emendation. On the basis of the proposed phylogeny and recent taxonomic literature, we present a preliminary revision of 24 species groups within Phytomyza, but leave many species unplaced. Evolution of internal pupariation (within the host’s tissue), regarded as a defining character of the former Chromatomyia, is discussed with regard to the new phylogeny, and we suggest a correlation with stem or leaf midrib mining. The large size of the Phytomyza lineage and an inferred pattern of host family‐specific species radiations make it a promising candidate for the study of macroevolutionary patterns of host shift and diversification in phytophagous insects. The proposed generic synonymies necessitate a number of new combinations. Trichome anatomy was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy in 25 genera of Engler's Saxifragaceae from the southern hemisphere. Four principal categories of trichome were recognized: (1) multiseriate with a glandular head; (2) uniseriate with a glandular head; (3) uniseriate, eglandular; (4) unicellular, eglandular. The shape of eglandular hairs ranges from erect to sickle-shaped to T-shaped. The main taxonomic conclusions are as follows: (a) Vahlia should be excluded from tribe Saxifrageae and a possible relationship with Montinia investigated; (b) Francoa and Tetilta (tribe Francoeae) are closely related, although the relationship of the tribe to its parent subfamily, Saxifragoideae, is unclear; (c) Eremosyne is probably allied to the Escallonioideae; (d) subfamily Brexioideae is heterogeneous in trichome anatomy, but the relationships of its constituent genera remain problematic; (e) subfamily Escallonioideae is heterogeneous in trichome anatomy, although similarities between and within the constituent tribes do exist. Thus Cuttsia and Abrophyllum form a natural group (tribe Cuttsieae), to which Carpodetus (tribe Argophylleae) may also be related; similarity in trichome anatomy between Argophyttum and Corokia (tribe Argophylleae) is substantiated by an extensive survey of all the species, and the data tentatively suggest a possible hydrangeoid affinity for these two genera.Forgesia (tribe Forgesieae) is shown to possess the same kind of hairs in the flowers as Quintinia (tribe Escallonieae), and Choristylis (tribe Forgesieae) is shown to be remarkably similar to Escallonia, prompting a suggestion that the two tribes be merged. Trichome data support the inclusion of Anopterus and Polyosma in their own tribes, although their wider affinities remain unclear. Doubts about the inclusion of the glabrous Tribeles in Escallonioideae are expressed. Our material of the following additional genera Lepuropetalon, Tetracarpaea and Brexia was glabrous and little comment could be made about them.  相似文献

Four new species belonging to Aulonastus Kethley, 1970 (Acari: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae), which are found inside the quills of body feathers of North American passerines (Aves: Passeriformes), are described and figured: A. emberizicus n. sp. from Ammodramus savanarum (Gmelin) (Emberizidae) (type-host) in Texas, Zonotrichia atricapilla (Gmelin) (Emberizidae) in California and Passerculus sandwichensis (Gmelin) (Emberizidae) in Texas; A. euphagus n. sp. from Euphagus cyanocephalus (Wagler) (Icteridae) in California; A. pirangus n. sp. from Piranga ludoviciana (Wilson) (Cardinalidae) in California; and A. sturnellus n. sp. from Sturnella magna (Linnaeus) (Icteridae) in Texas. A multigene phylogeny using COI‐5P (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1), psbA (PSII reaction center protein D1), and EF2 (elongation factor 2) sequence data for members of the tribe Corallineae was constructed to assess generic boundaries. We determined that traditional reliance on conceptacle position as an indicator of generic affinities in the Corallineae is not supported and taxonomic changes are required. We found that species currently assigned to Pseudolithophyllum muricatum resolved within the Corallineae in all analyses. This is the first record of crustose members in the subfamily Corallinoideae. Further‐more, the genus Serraticardia was polyphyletic; we propose to synonomize Serraticardia with Corallina, transfer the type species Smaxima to Corallina (Cmaxima (Yendo) comb. nov.), and describe the new genus Johansenia for Smacmillanii (Jmacmillanii (Yendo) comb. nov.). Our molecular data also indicate that species in the genus Marginisporum have evolutionary affinities among species of Corallina and these genera should also be synonymized. This necessitates the combinations Caberrans (Yendo) comb. nov. for Maberrans (Yendo) Johansen & Chihara, Ccrassissima (Yendo) comb. nov. for M. crassissimum (Yendo) Ganesan, and C. declinata (Yendo) comb. nov. for M. declinata (Yendo) Ganesan. Corallina elongata was divergent from all other members of Corallina and is transferred to a new genus, Ellisolandia (E. elongata (J. Ellis & Solander) comb. nov). In addition, COI‐5P and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) data combined with morphological characters were used to establish that rather than the four Corallina species recognized in Canada, there are nine.  相似文献

We investigated the use of a monoclonal antibody (MAb 238) to the soybean Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI) to verify and understand the intergenomic relationships among the wild perennial Glycine species. Competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and western blot screening studies revealed that the accessions of B-genome (G. latifolia, G. microphylla, and G. tabacina, 2n = 40) and C-genome (G. curvata and G. cyrtoloba) species did not contain the MAb 238 crossreactive proteins (BBI-nulls). By contrast, all the A-genome (G. argyrea, G. canescens, G. clandestina, and G. latrobeana), E-genome (G. tomentella, 2n = 38), and F-genome (G. falcata) species, G. arenaria (genome unknown), and the polyploid (2n = 78,80) G. tomentella accessions were BBI-positive. The D-genome G. tomentella (2n = 40) and tetraploid G. tabacina (2n = 80) contained both BBI-null and BBI-positive type accessions. Among the recently described species, G. hirticaulis (2n = 40), G. lactovirens, and G. pindanica contained the MAb 238 crossreactive proteins while G. albicans did not. Glycine hirticaulis, G. pindanica, and G. tomentella (2n = 38) displayed highly similar MAb 238 crossreactive isoelectric focusing banding patterns, indicating that they are genomically close to each other. Glycine hirticaulis was found to have both diploid (2n = 40) and tetraploid (2n = 80) cytotypes. We demonstrated that the MAb 238 was specific to the trypsin inhibitor domain of the BBI. The MAb 238 clearly reflected all the previously established relationships in the genus Glycine, validating its use as a genome marker.  相似文献

The aim of this review was to undertake a survey of researchers working with plant‐parasitic nematodes in order to determine a ‘top 10’ list of these pathogens based on scientific and economic importance. Any such list will not be definitive as economic importance will vary depending on the region of the world in which a researcher is based. However, care was taken to include researchers from as many parts of the world as possible when carrying out the survey. The top 10 list emerging from the survey is composed of: (1) root‐knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.); (2) cyst nematodes (Heterodera and Globodera spp.); (3) root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.); (4) the burrowing nematode Radopholus similis; (5) Ditylenchus dipsaci; (6) the pine wilt nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus; (7) the reniform nematode Rotylenchulus reniformis; (8) Xiphinema index (the only virus vector nematode to make the list); (9) Nacobbus aberrans; and (10) Aphelenchoides besseyi. Microbial hydrolysis of the acetates of unsaturated cyclic terpene alcohols by Pseudomonas sp. NOF-5 isolated from soil was investigated. (±)-trans-Carveyl acetate ((±)-trans-3) was enantio-selectively hydrolyzed with NOF-5 strain to give ( – )-trans-carveol (( – )-trans-2 of 86.6% optical purity). However, the hydrolysis of (±)-cis-3 was less enantioselective, while (±)-piperitylacetate ((±)-6, a cis and trans mixture) was hydrolyzed to give the ( – )-trans- and ( – )-cis-piperitols (( – )- trans-5 and ( – )-cis-5) in a poor optical yield. In this case, other tert-alcohols, ( + )-trans- and ( – )- ds-2-p-menthen-1-ols ((±)-trans-7 and ( – )-cis-7), were also produced. Furthermore, microbial and enzymic allyl rearrangements of ( + )-trans-6 and ( – )-trans-verbenylacetate (( – )-trans-11) were studied. Biological treatment of (+)-trans-6 and ( – )-trans-11 with NOF-5 or its esterase gave (+)-trans- and (-)-cis-1 and ( + )-cis-3-pinen-2-ol (( + )-cis-12), respectively.  相似文献

The levels of benzo(a)pyrene diol-epoxide (BPDE)-DNA adducts and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were analysed in a limited number of samples of autoptic lung tissue obtained from non-professionally exposed male (n= 13) and female (n= 12) non-smokers in an attempt to evaluate the relationship between gender, lung PAH levels (n= 25) and susceptibility to BPDE-DNA adduct formation (n= 18). Saxifraga rosacea is recorded and Poa scotica described new to Scotland. The position of segregate taxa or breeding units within several species complexes is clarified within Scotland: (a) the hexaploid cytotype within the mostly tetraploid Campanula rotundifolia; (b) diploid Hedera helix and tetraploid H. hibernica;, (c) diploid and tetraploid Deschampsia cespitosa, D. alpina and D. parviflora; (d) octoploid sub-species scotica within usually hexaploid Festuca rubra; (e) an octoploid mountain Agrostis; (f) fertile hexaploid Potentilla anserina; (g) an approximately triploid aneuploid Vaccinium uliginosum ssp. microphyllum.  相似文献
