The ichnogenus Rusophycus includes a wide range of short bilobate excavations generally attributed to variable feeding behaviors of arthropods, especially trilobites. An unusual Rusophycus assemblage from Upper Ordovician Georgian Bay Formation in Ontario departs radically from previously described examples and presents new challenges for understanding the behavior represented by these traces. This specimen is unique in the arrangement of multiple Rusophycus burrows in a circular, lens-shaped array (as opposed to a linear or random arrangement typical of other Rusophycus assemblages). The size and shape of the individual Rusophycus components are consistent with traces attributed to the coeval trilobite Flexicalymene. Multiple Rusophycus assemblages likely reflect aggregations of trilobites in response to a local concentration of food. The topology of this particular Rusophycus assemblage suggests that the trilobites opportunistically exploited a rich and narrowly restricted food source, perhaps the decaying remains of a buried organism.  相似文献

Global records of Early Cambrian acritarchs from the Skiagia plexus reveal that they are stratigraphically significant and can be used as biostratigraphic markers. Skiagia ornata and Skiagia ciliosa have a cosmopolitan distribution and the levels of their first appearance datums are proposed to serve as biostratigraphic horizons for interregional correlation. These levels are close to the lower boundary of the undefined Cambrian Stage 3, and within the Stage 3, respectively. The acritarch assemblage diagnostic of the Heliosphaeridium dissimilare-S. ciliosa Zone of Baltica is recorded worldwide and some species are traced on four of the Cambrian continents that include South Australia, South China and Laurentia. This supports the intercontinental correlation of certain Lower Cambrian strata and establishes the time equivalence between the regional trilobite zones to which these strata are attributed. The regional zonation is briefly reviewed for the purpose of comparing and evaluating the acritarch ranges. The biostratigraphic correlation of the Lower Cambrian strata, belonging to different faunal provinces, is based for the first time on the same fossil species, which have a cosmopolitan distribution and well-defined first appearance datums, and on the entire diagnostic acritarch assemblages.  相似文献

The low Lower Cambrian rocks from the Sierra de Córdoba, which consist of well exposed mixed facies and abundant fossil assemblages showing long stratigraphic ranges throughout the Pedroche Formation, represent one of the best successions of this age in Europe. The fossil assemblages include diverse Ovetian archaeocyaths, trilobites, small shelly fossils, calcimicrobia, trace fossils and stromatolites. Trilobites are still poorly known, and thus they are the main objective of this work. The trilobites studied originate from three sections. At the Arroyo de Pedroche 1 section, cf. Bigotinella and Bigotinabivallata are replaced towards the top by Lemdadellalinaresae, Lemdadellaperejoni sp. nov. and, finally, by Eoredlichia cf. ovetensis. At the Arroyo de Pedroche 2 section, Lemdadellalinaresae is replaced by Lemdadellaperejoni sp. nov. and Eoredlichia cf. ovetensis, while at the Puente de Hierro section Lemdadellalinaresae, L. aff. linaresae and Serraniaverae occur together. These new biostratigraphic data confirm that the Pedroche Formation, originally defined as a repetitive sequence of four members, contains only two members. The new trilobite discoveries permit the first tentative correlation between the Ovetian of southern Spain and Lower Cambrian strata from the High Atlas (Morocco), Siberia, Antarctica and Carteret (France).  相似文献

The solenopleurine trilobite genera Jincella and Liosolenopleura are revised herein. The species Jincella prantli, Jincella convexa nov. sp. and Liosolenopleura serventi occur in Languedocian (upper Middle Cambrian) rocks of the southern Montagne Noire (France), southwestern Sardinia (Italy), and the P?íbram-Jince and Skryje areas (Czech Republic). The correlation of their first appearances permits us to improve the Middle Cambrian biostratigraphic correlations in western and central Europe. At least 17 Middle Cambrian Bohemian species are already reported outside the Czech Republic, whose outcrops can be considered as a hinge in the correlations between southwestern Europe, Saxo-Thuringia, Avalonia and Baltica.  相似文献

A set of criteria is suggested for associating a trace fossil with a plausible fossil: (1) close association in the field; (2) concurrent stratigraphic range; (3) a minimal choice of candidates available that could have made the trace; (4) consistent size range between trace fossil population and that of the maker; and (5) consistent biogeographic ranges for both. In the Upper Cambrian Andam Formation of Oman, there is a rare, direct association between trilobite body fossils and the trace fossil Cruziana in the same rock succession. An association of the trilobite Maladioidella cf. colcheni with the trace fossil Cruziana semiplicata is supported by the criteria listed. Maladioidella is associated with C. semiplicata over a wide geographical area in western Gondwana. It is therefore likely that some Cruziana species were made by trilobites.  相似文献

The missisquoiids are among the most important trilobites in the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary interval of Laurentia and Gondwana. This study deals with a systematic review of the family Missisquoiidae based on a cladistic analysis and explores their palaeobiogeographical history. A total of 22 missisquoiid species were selected for cladistic analysis. The cladistic results demonstrate that the family Missisquoiidae includes Parakoldinioidia, Pseudokoldinioidia, Tangshanaspis, and Tasmanocephalus; Lunacrania and Hardyia are included with reservation. The well-known genus Missisquoia is treated as a junior synonym of Parakoldinioidia. Based on the distribution of the missisquoiids, six palaeogeographical areas are recognised: Sino-Korea, Yangtze, Australia, southern Laurentia, northwestern Laurentia, and northeastern Laurentia. Palaeogeographical analyses show that the missisquoiids originated in Gondwana and continued to expand their geographical range within the continent and eventually expanded into the Laurentia. Optimisation results of geographical area transitions demonstrate that there were transitions between the two continents, and evolution of the Laurentian missisquoiids appears to have been strongly influenced by the Gondwanan counterparts. We suggest that dispersal of non-fossilised egg stage probably transported by oceanic currents may have been responsible for these inter-continental transitions.  相似文献

Cambrian rocks in South Australia occur in the Stansbury, Arrowie, eastern Officer and Warburton Basins. The succession in the Stansbury and Arrowie Basins can be divided into three sequence sets (supersequences), 1, 2 and 3. Sequence set 1 can be divided into five third-order sequences: 1.0, 1.1A, 1.1B, 1.2 and 1.3. Trilobites from the Stansbury and Arrowie Basins are restricted largely to the lower part of the succession. Four trilobite zones are recognized: Abadiella huoi (latest Atdabanian–earliest Botoman), Pararaia tatei, Pararaia bunyerooensis and Pararaia janeae Zones (all Botoman). Trilobites higher in the succession are known from only a few horizons and in part correlate with the upper Lower Cambrian Lungwangmiaoan Stage of China, equivalent to the top Toyonian. Pagetia sp. has been reported in the Coobowie Formation of the Stansbury Basin, thus suggesting an early Middle Cambrian age.The Cambrian faunas of the Warburton Basin range in age from early Middle Cambrian (Late Templetonian) to very Late Cambrian, although the richest faunal assemblages are late Middle Cambrian (Ptychagnostus punctuosus to Goniagnostus nathorsti Zones). Conodonts, including Cordylodus proavus, occur in a Datsonian fauna.The Arrowie Basin contains the most complete and best studied archaeocyath succession in the Australia–Antarctica region. The Warriootacyathus wilkawillensis, Spirillicyathus tenuis and Jugalicyathus tardus Zones from the lower Wilkawillina Limestone (Arrowie Basin) and equivalents are correlated with the Atdabanian. Botoman archaeocyathids occur higher in the Wilkawillina Limestone. The youngest (Toyonian) archaeocyath fauna in Australia occurs in the Wirrealpa Limestone (Arrowie Basin).Brachiopods and molluscs of the Arrowie and Stansbury Basins can be divided into four biostratigraphic assemblages. Several informal Early Cambrian SSF biostratigraphic assemblages are recognized. Probable tabulate-like corals occur in the Botoman Moorowie Formation. Seven informal acritarch assemblages occur in the Early Cambrian of the Stansbury and Arrowie Basins. Trace fossils may mark the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary. Only two of several tuffaceous horizons from the Stansbury and Arrowie Basins have been dated (i) a date of 522.0 ± 2.1 Ma from the Heatherdale Shale of the Stansbury Basin, about 400 m above latest Atdabanian archaeocyathids and (ii) a date of 522.0 ± 1.8 Ma from the lower part of the Billy Creek Formation in the Arrowie Basin. Pagetia is the most abundant trilobite in the Kaili Formation (lower to middle Cambrian). During the course of studying the museum collections of Kaili trilobites ( n  > 1000), a cluster containing 22 pagetiid individuals at various growth stages is noted. Specimens record the growth range from the degree 0 meraspid to late holaspid phases. Based on the relative completeness of the moults except for missing free cheeks, these specimens are interpreted as intact exuviae that had undergone minimal transport prior to burial. If Kaili pagetiids had pelagic or planktonic living habits as previously suggested, it would be difficult to explain the presence of intact exuviae in clusters. Therefore, Kaili pagetiids are interpreted here as having a benthic mode of life after the onset of the meraspid phase.  相似文献

我国贵州东部乌溜-曾家崖凯里组剖面作为世界早-中寒武世界线层型侯选剖面,产出良好保存的大型无脊椎动物化石(尤其是三叶虫)。因此,更加详细研究该剖面海洋疑源类的生物地层非常重要,将提供围绕界线的生物和环境变化的细微记录。乌溜-曾家崖剖面凯里组的疑源类划分两个组合,它们是凯里组0-52m的Leiomarginata si mplex-Fi mbriaglomerella membranacea组合和52-140m的Cristallinium cambriense-Heliosphaeridiumnodosum-Globosphaeridiumcerinum组合。140-214m仅有很少疑源类标本,可能因为凯里组上部以白云岩为主,不适宜有机壁微体化石的保存。距凯里组底部往上约52m处疑源类组合出现重大变化,无疑为解释沉积环境提供重要资料。两疑源类组合间界线,位于52.3-52.7m,此稍低于被三叶虫Oryctocephalusindicus首现所指示的全球寒武系第5阶潜在层型剖面界线。  相似文献

Drillholes to several kilometres depth on Kolguev Island in the southern Barents Sea have sampled early Palaeozoic successions, known elsewhere in the Pechora Basin to overlie Neoproterozoic basement complexes. New studies on acritarch microfossils from the lowermost part of the Palaeozoic succession (c. 4500 m depth), reached by the Bugrino 1 and North-Western 202 boreholes, revealed diverse and biostratigraphically significant assemblages, which indicate the position of the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary in a sedimentologically continuous offshore marine succession. Upper Cambrian strata equivalent to the Peltura and Acerocare zones are distinguished on the basis of common taxa known from the neighbouring East European Platform and other areas in Baltica, Avalonia, and Gondwana. Invertebrate faunas, including brachiopods, problematic mollusc and phyllocarid arthropods, are revised taxonomically; they are indicative for the Tremadocian and Arenigian stages in the upper part of the succession. The Cambrian strata are insofar documented by fossil record only on the Kolguev Island, although their extension (of various series) in other areas of the Pechora Basin is claimed on the grounds of geophysical data and/or is inferred from geological successions. This new biostratigraphic evidence and facies development suggest that the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian platformal deposits were likely widely distributed over the northeastern Baltica, as they were in the East European Platform and Baltoscandia. They were accumulated on a stable and passive margin of the craton with steady subsidence and a high rate of sedimentation.  相似文献

The lower Cambrian succession in the Jiaobang section, Jianhe County, eastern Guizhou, China, includes, in ascending order, the Bianmachong, Balang, and Tsinghsutung formations, with a total thickness of about 645 m. Twenty-six morphological genera (including one new genus) are identified from the Balang and the underlying Bianmachong formations, many of which are common and widely distributed. Six acritarch assemblages are discerned in the Balang Formation. They are, in ascending order, the Adara alea‒Skiagia ornata, the Acrum radiale‒Pterospermella velata, the Comasphaeridium molliculum‒Solisphaeridium baltoscandium, the Corrugasphaera perfecta n. sp.‒Pterospermella vinctusa n. sp., the Acrum novum‒Heliosphaeridium oligum, and the Acrum membranosum‒Adarve diafanum acritarch assemblages. An obvious change of organic-walled microfossil assemblages occurred in the interval between 84 m and 98 m from the bottom of the Balang Formation which roughly corresponds to the boundary between the Oryctacarella duyunensis trilobite Zone and the overlying Arthricocephalus chauveaui trilobite Zone. In addition, organic-walled microfossils are scarce in about 24 m thick from the bottom of the Balang Formation. One new genus and five new species including Plagasphaera balangensis n. gen. n. sp., Asteridium tubulus n. sp., Cymatiosphaera spina n. sp., Corrugasphaera perfecta n. sp., and Pterospermella vinctusa n. sp. are described.  相似文献

Summary Arylphorin was purified from larvae of the blowfly Calliphora vicina and studied in its oligomeric form and after dissociation at pH 9.6 into native subunits. In accordance with earlier literature, it was electrophoretically shown to be a 500 kDa hexamer (1×6) consisting of 78 kDa polypeptides (= subunits). Electron micrographs of negatively stained hexamers show a characteristic curvilinear, equilateral triangle of 12 nm in diameter (top view) and a rectangle measuring 10×12 nm (side view). Alternatively, particles in the top view orientation exhibit a roughly circular shape 12 nm in diameter. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis revealed the presence of a major subunit type; the nature of a very minor and a third immunologically separated component remains unclear. A novel 2×6 arylphorin particle was detected and isolated. It comprises less than 10% of the total arylphorin material and shows a long, narrow interhexamer bridge in the electron microscope. An arylphorin dissociation intermediate identified as a trimer (1/2×6) was isolated; its possible quaternary structure is discussed on the basis of electron micrographs. The epitope of monoclonal antibody Ec-7 directed against tarantula (Eurypelma californicum) hemocyanin subunit d and also reactive to Calliphora arylphorin was traced to a highly conserved peptide of 27 amino acids localized in the center of the protein. The primary structure of Calliphora arylphorin as published in our preceding paper (Naumann and Scheller 1991) is compared in detail to the sequences of spider and spiny lobster hemocyanin. This revealed a basic framework of 103 strictly conserved amino acids. Isofunctional exchanges are proposed for another 76 positions. On the basis of these similarities, and the published three-dimensional model of spiny lobster hemocyanin, a detailed model of the quaternary structure of Calliphora arylphorin is presented. A second larval storage protein previously termed protein II was purified from Calliphora hemolymph. It was demonstrated to be a 500 kDa hexamer of 83 kDa subunits. In the electron microscope it shows a cubic view 9 nm in length with a large central hole and a rectangular view (9×10 nm) with a large central cavity. A morphologically very similar hemolymph protein was detected in Drosophila melanogaster larvae. The presence of one of the oldest records of polycystine Radiolaria in the Lower Cambrian sedimentary sequence of the Ak-Kaya section (Gorny Altai) requires a biostratigraphic dating. The trilobites found recently a few tens of meters below the radiolarian-bearing level belong to Calodiscus resimus Repina, Serrodiscus fossuliferus Repina and Alacephalus aff. contortus Repina; they suggest that this part of the Shashkunar Formation can be correlated with the lower part of the Botomian stage. The absence of eyes in the two former species suggests a mode of life buried in the fine pelagic sediments. Indications of the presence of a strongly developed musculature on the third species point to a palaeoenvironment characterized by a relatively high hydrodynamic regime.  相似文献

A slab of Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian), displaying an incomplete exoskeleton of the large arthropod Sidneyia inexpectans and encompassed by nine specimens of the priapulid worm Ottoia prolifica, is interpreted as a death assemblage, with the worms once living off or feeding around a carcass or freshly moulted instar of Sidneyia. Death is thought to have been caused by an obrution event that preserved the organisms in situ.  相似文献

We describe an assemblage of small carbonaceous fossils (SCFs) and acritarchs from cored siltstones of the Lappajärvi impact structure, west‐central Finland. Previous studies had detected a depauperate acritarch biota ascribed to a deep Proterozoic origin—this age, however, was based on recovery of long‐ranging poorly age‐diagnostic sphaeromorphs. To resolve the age and provenance of these crater sediments, we applied low‐manipulation processing techniques optimized for retrieval of larger organic‐walled microfossils. Our study revealed a previously undetected assemblage containing numerous metazoan SCFs consisting of flattened ‘protoconodonts’ (grasping spines assignable to total group Chaetognatha) and a distinctive fossilised chaeta, possibly representing the oldest known annelid remains. Phylogenetically problematic fossils include various acritarchs (large Leiosphaeridia sp., Tasmanites tenellus, smaller sphaeromorphs, Synsphaeridium, Archaeodiscina and Granomarginata) and filamentous forms (Palaeolyngbya‐ and Rugosoopsis‐like filaments, Siphonophycus), likely representing prokaryotic or protistan grades of organisation. As well as adding new diversity to an emerging SCFs record, these data substantially refine the age of these sediments by more than half a billion years, to an early Cambrian Terreneuvian age. More specifically, the assemblage is equivalent to that of the Lontova Formation from the Baltic States and northwest Russia, but is previously unreported from Finland. Identification of Lontova‐type SCFs/organic‐walled microfossils at Lappajärvi further constrains the poorly resolved extent of maximum flooding during the early Cambrian in Baltica. Renewed attention should be directed to strata that have thus far produced only biostratigraphically long‐ranging or ambiguous palynological assemblages—‘SCF‐style’ processing can reveal hitherto undetected, age‐informative microfossils that are otherwise selectively removed in conventional palynological studies.  相似文献

The single-celled ancestors of multi-cellular animals (metazoans) did not need to transport nutrients between cells, but this ability is vital for modern animals. How could intercellular nutrient transport have begun? And how did this influence the early evolution of animals? In this hypothesis, I suggest that nutrients could have passed directly between the cytoplasm of conjoined cells in early compacted cell-balls, along the plane of the closed epithelium. This would have limited early animals to the size and form of modern embryos. The mechanisms that indirectly transport nutrients between discrete cells, via the extracellular fluid within the body-space, are modelled to have evolved sequentially; so comparison of nutrient transport processes could provide evidence of any early divergences of phyla. When the last of the indirect intercellular transport processes for essential nutrients had been developed, the extracellular fluid within the body-space would have contained all necessary nutrients. Then the epithelium could have greatly expanded, and cells lived and divided within the body-space. This development of nutrient transport processes would have enabled animals to greatly increase in size and complexity.  相似文献

Three hundred protaspid and meraspid specimens of the trilobite species Alueva undulata Sdzuy, 1961 from the uppermost Bilbilian limestones of the Valdemiedes Formation (Iberian Chains, NE Spain) have been released by the action of acid. A pædomorphocline is proposed embracing the different species of Alueva, based on the comparison of the ontogenic patterns of the species Alueva undulata Sdzuy, 1961, and the adult morphologies of Alueva moratrix (Sdzuy, 1958). This analysis suggests that the species Alueva? hastata (Sdzuy, 1958) is not related to the pædomorphocline, and provides an approach for evaluating the phylogenetic relationships between the species A. undulata and A. moratrix, which occur across the Lower-Middle Cambrian transition in the Iberian Chains, directly linked with the Valdemiedes event.  相似文献

We compared on eight dates during the ice-free period physicochemical properties and rates of phytoplankton and epipelic primary production in six arctic lakes dominated by soft bottom substrate. Lakes were classified as shallow ( < 2.5 m), intermediate in depth (2.5 m <  < 4.5 m), and deep ( > 4.5 m), with each depth category represented by two lakes. Although shallow lakes circulated freely and intermediate and deep lakes stratified thermally for the entire summer, dissolved oxygen concentrations were always >70% of saturation values. Soluble reactive phosphorus and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN = NO3 –N + NH4 +–N) were consistently below the detection limit (0.05 μmol l−1) in five lakes. However, one lake shallow lake (GTH 99) periodically showed elevated values of DIN (17 μmol l−1), total-P (0.29 μmol l−1), and total-N (33 μmol l−1), suggesting wind-generated sediment resuspension. Due to increased nutrient availability or entrainment of microphytobenthos, GTH 99 showed the highest average volume-based values of phytoplankton chlorophyll a (chl a) and primary production, which for the six lakes ranged from 1.0 to 2.9 μg l−1 and 0.7–3.8 μmol C l−1 day−1. Overall, however, increased resulted in increased area-based values of phytoplankton chl a and primary production, with mean values for the three lake classes ranging from 3.6 to 6.1 mg chl a m−2 and 3.2–5.8 mmol C m−2 day−1. Average values of epipelic chl a ranged from 131 to 549 mg m−2 for the three depth classes, but levels were not significantly different due to high spatial variability. However, average epipelic primary production was significantly higher in shallow lakes (12.2 mmol C m−2 day−1) than in intermediate and deep lakes (3.4 and 2.4 mmol C m−2 day−1). Total primary production (6.7–15.4 mmol C m−2 day−1) and percent contribution of the epipelon (31–66%) were inversely related to mean depth, such that values for both variables were significantly higher in shallow lakes than in intermediate or deep lakes.
