Background

Although lacking visual experience with numerosities, recent evidence shows that the blind perform similarly to sighted persons on numerical comparison or parity judgement tasks. In particular, on tasks presented in the auditory modality, the blind surprisingly show the same effect that appears in sighted persons, demonstrating that numbers are represented through a spatial code, i.e. the Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect. But, if this is the case, how is this numerical spatial representation processed in the brain of the blind?

Principal Findings

Here we report that, although blind and sighted people have similarly organized numerical representations, the attentional shifts generated by numbers have different electrophysiological correlates (sensorial N100 in the sighted and cognitive P300 in the blind).

Conclusions

These results highlight possible differences in the use of spatial representations acquired through modalities other than vision in the blind population.  相似文献

Of the three hemocyte types present in the blood of Calliphora, only one participates in capsule formation around implanted cellophane. This hemocyte, the thrombocytoid, shows in the blood a tendency to dissociate into numerous small cytoplasmic fragments, comparable to the mammalian megakaryocyte. This tendency is dramatically increased during the process of encapsulation. Most of the intact thrombocytoids and the numerous fragments participating in capsule formation do not show any particular modifications in their cytoplasm during this process, which corresponds to a mere sequestration of the implant. Dense material, resulting from necrotic cell debris and hemolymph lipoproteins, is often observed between the cellophane and encapsulating thrombocytoids, which apparently participate in the resorption of this material.  相似文献

Using faunal analysis, this article outlines a coastal mammalian harvesting pattern involving a few terrestrial mammals whose biomass appears to have been greater when associated with man than under natural conditions. Archeological evidence suggests that these animals fed regularly on cultivated crops and were hunted in house gardens and cultivated fields. By concentrating the supply of both carbohydrates and animal protein, garden hunting may have eliminated seasonality and scheduling problems. And because it artificially increased the biomass of selected animals, it may have functioned as a substitute for animal domestication.  相似文献

Summary Control, by the spores, over the elongation and the branching of the sporangiophore is described. If the sporangium is removed from a sporangiophore, the sporangiophore stops growing within a few hours. 6–16h later a branch grows from the defunct growing zone. This branch forms a new sporangium and spores, and then starts to elongate again. The original growing zone can be rescued by replacing the sporangium with another sporangium or a sporangium-sized drop of spores. If the original growing zone is rescued, then it continues growing and the sporangiophore does not form a branch. Summary At a particular stage in the development of the ovarian oocyte in the golden hamster, massive juxtanuclear accumulations of mitochondria grouped in a specific pattern have been observed. The active reaction upon stimulation of the femoral chordotonal organ in stick insects is known to control velocity and endpoint of flexion movements of the femur-tibia joint (Bässler 1988). This article presents evidence that spiking interneurones in the ventral anterior median part of the adjacent ganglion participate in the generation of the active reaction as well as non-spiking interneurones in the dorsal lateral region do. Three different kinds of experiments lead to this conclusion:
–  - Ablation of the ventral anterior median part of the metathoracic ganglion ofExtatosoma did not qualitatively alter the resistance reflex in the inactive animal but abolished the active reaction.
–  - Recordings from spiking interneurones in the same region of the prothoracic ganglion ofCarausius show that some of these neurones responded to a chordotonal organ stimulus in a way, which depended on the behavioural state of the animal.
–  - Some non-spiking interneurones, which mediate the resistance reflex in the inactive animal, respond differently during an active reaction.

Summary Electron-microscopic studies of peripheral nerves as prepared by the freezeetching method show the myelin lamella to be 185 Å thick. This is the same dimension found by x-ray diffraction analysis of natural myelin. In contrast to the appearance of osmiumfixed material, the cytoplasmic surfaces of the paired membranes in the myelin lamella are apposed to two fine, separate lines, while the outer membrane sides are fused into a broader single line. The finding of a decidedly different structure for the outer and for the inner membrane surfaces appears to be the cause of the difference factor.This work was supported by the Swiss National Foundation (Nr. 4065). — Acknowledgement: We thank the Balzers AG. Extra Replications in the “DNA-puffs” ofSciara coprophila   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Using the Zeiss UMSP-1, a spectrophotometric study was made of DNA increase in three DNA-puffs located on chromosome II ofSciara coprophila. Each puff showed excessive and disproportionate synthesis. During the course of study it became apparent that the DNA in at least one of the puffs (the most proximal) arises from a number of cytological subunits (bands). When the DNA in the entire puff was measured, only irregular synthesis was revealed. On the other hand, when DNA increase in one of the bands was measured, the absorbancy values formed a geometric series, indicating that the extra DNA arises by additional complete rounds of replication.I wish to acknowledge support by the National Science Foundation (Grant GB-4336), the Max Planck-Gesellschaft, and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (Contract No. AT-(40-1)-2690). Microfungal “Weeds” in the Leafcutter Ant Symbiosis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Leafcutter ants (Formicidae: tribe Attini) are well-known insects that cultivate basidiomycete fungi (Agaricales: Lepiotaceae) as their principal food. Fungus gardens are monocultures of a single cultivar strain, but they also harbor a diverse assemblage of additional microbes with largely unknown roles in the symbiosis. Cultivar-attacking microfungi in the genus Escovopsis are specialized parasites found only in association with attine gardens. Evolutionary theory predicts that the low genetic diversity in monocultures should render ant gardens susceptible to a wide range of diseases, and additional parasites with roles similar to that of Escovopsis are expected to exist. We profiled the diversity of cultivable microfungi found in 37 nests from ten Acromyrmex species from Southern Brazil and compared this diversity to published surveys. Our study revealed a total of 85 microfungal strains. Fusarium oxysporum and Escovopsis were the predominant species in the surveyed gardens, infecting 40.5% and 27% of the nests, respectively. No specific relationship existed regarding microfungal species and ant-host species, ant substrate preference (dicot versus grass) or nesting habit. Molecular data indicated high genetic diversity among Escovopsis isolates. In contrast to the garden parasite, F. oxysporum strains are not specific parasites of the cultivated fungus because strains isolated from attine gardens have similar counterparts found in the environment. Overall, the survey indicates that saprophytic microfungi are prevalent in South American leafcutter ants. We discuss the antagonistic potential of these microorganisms as “weeds” in the ant–fungus symbiosis.  相似文献

Inflammation markedly alters the motility patterns of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting mostly in decreased excitability of smooth muscle. There is emerging evidence indicating that inflammation alters ion channel expression and function of smooth muscle cells. In this review we summarize studies defining the mechanisms affecting contractile and electrical activity of gastrointestinal smooth muscle. We have focused on the evidence for decreased calcium channel conductance and alterations in the intracellular signaling mechanisms and discuss the role of muscarinic receptor activation in models of gastrointestinal inflammation. We propose that some of the clinical symptoms of altered smooth muscle contraction in pathogenesis of gut disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease may be regulated at the level of the ion channel.  相似文献

Summary The varied appearance of so-called structured granules in vegetative cells and akinetes of Anabaena sp. is dependent upon the length of primary glutaraldehyde fixation, the type and duration of secondary fixation, and the temperature during both fixations as well as possible changes under electron bombardment. The image produced may be one of an open hole, an area of low to medium electron opacity or that of a dense structured body and may include all intergradations. These structured granules represent the cyanophycin granules of light microscopy. Various cytochemical tests did not establish their chemical composition.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the diatomSynedra cf.ulna was examined paying special attention to the Plattenband (platelet band). This structure was first described byGeitler in 1948 on the basis of LM observations and denotes a linear array of dictyosomes along the apical axis of the cell. The present investigation confirmsGeitler's observations in all essential details and demonstrates that the dictyosomes are arranged along polarized nuclear extensions running towards the cell poles. Laterally the extensions are accompanied by a number of microtubules. In large cells the total length of the nucleus thus may reach 400 µm and more. Since only the central part of the nucleus is DNA-positive with DAPI and acridine orange, the nuclear nature of the backbone of the Plattenband cannot be recognized by LM techniques. TEM investigation of serial apical and transapical sections, however, prove unambiguously the identity with extended parts of the nucleus.Dedicated to Prof. DrLothar Geitler on the occasion of his 90th birthday.  相似文献
