Littoraria filosa (Sowerby) is a member of the L. scabra group, found amongst the foliage of mangrove trees in northern Australia. The colour of the shell is polymorphic, showing two discrete ground colours, either yellow or orange-pink, with a variable degree of superimposed brown patterning. At a site on Magnetic Island, northern Queensland, colour frequencies of small snails were similar on different backgrounds. Amongst larger shells yellows were more frequent on Avicennia trees with abundant foliage, and browns on relatively bare trees, suggesting that visual selection for crypsis occurred. There was no evidence of substrate selection by the morphs. Yellow shells were cooler than brown shells, but differences in colour frequencies on sunny and shaded trees, and at different seasons, did not suggest climatic selection. By manipulating the colour frequencies of subpopulations of small snails isolated on individual trees, it was shown that the disappearance of yellow and brown shells was frequency-dependent. This result is consistent with hypotheses of mimicry of background elements by the morphs and of apostatic selection by unknown predators. Only the latter can account for the persistence of the highly conspicuous pink morph at a low frequency.  相似文献

Littorina saxatilis Olivi (1792), the rough winkle, is highly polymorphic in shell colour. Shell colour frequencies were studied at six locations in south-western Wales, U.K., each at a geological contact between red sandstone and grey limestone or volcanic rock. At each site shell colour frequencies were determined in samples from the contact zone and on red or grey rock on either side. Highly significant associations were found between shell colour frequencies and substrate colour. Grey shells were always more common on grey rock than on red rock, and brown shells were usually more common on red than on grey rock, suggesting selection for cryptic colouration. Shell colour frequency differences were also found between replicate samples taken only 5 m apart from the same kind of rock, and between samples from the same kind of rock at the six study sites. These latter differences suggest that selection for camouflage is not the only factor involved in maintaining shell colour polymorphism in this species.  相似文献

Variable selection, including spatio-temporal variation, frequency-dependent selection and differential selection due to habitat choice, may maintain polymorphism in heterogeneous environments. We studied predation as a selective agent on colour polymorphism of the aquatic isopod I baltica. Variable predation on this species can arise from at least three sources. First, apostatic selection was studied by testing the formation of preferences on colour morphs in the perch, a common predator of I baltica. Such acquired preferences should induce apostatic selection. While our results indicate some acquired preferences, there was significant heterogeneity in the behaviour of predator individuals. Second, temporal variation in selection can arise due to habitat shift from the green algae juvenile habitat to the bladderwrack adult habitat, and the consequent change in the crypsis of the morphs. Different crypsis between sexes probably promoted high predation mortality among females in the juvenile habitat. The high rate of male mortality during the breeding period, on the other hand, was presumably due to their high mate-searching activity. Third, the sex-dependent habitat choice of I baltica leads to sexual differences in the susceptibility of morphs to predation. Predators preferred the white-spotted morph over the uniform one in males but not in females, supporting the 'dimorphic niche' hypothesis as an explanation of sexual differences in morph frequencies. Finally, no evidence was found that the colouration patterns were under sexual selection. We therefore conclude diat variable predation is the most promising explanation for the maintenance of polymorphism in I. baltica.  相似文献

Melanistic garter snakes ( Thamnophis sirtalis ) are unusually common near Lake Erie, apparently because selection for thermoregulatory ability in cool lake-shore habitats (which favours melanistic morphs) outweighs selection for crypsis (which favours striped morphs). However, morph frequencies are highly variable among sites, suggesting that random genetic drift also influences colour pattern. In an effort to better understand the evolutionary processes influencing garter snake colour patterns, we estimated Fx and Nm (the number of migrants per generation) among island and mainland populations from patterns of allozymic variation detected using electrophoresis. Estimates of Nm were high, ranging from 2.7 to 37.6 between pairs of study sites and making it unlikely that differences in morph frequencies among sites were solely the result of random genetic drift. Furthermore, differences in F st estimates between colour pattern (a one-locus two-allele trait) and allozyme loci suggest that colour pattern alleles are not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, most likely as a result of natural selection. Comparison of allozymic data from Lake Erie with those from more distant sites suggests that gene flow occurs over long distances in T. sirtalis.  相似文献

The behaviour of bumblebee workers foraging on arrays of artificial flowers of two colour morphs was observed. Experiments were conducted on arrays of varying morph frequencies and at three different total flower densities. Bumblebees consistently showed a preference for the commonest colour morph, and this behaviour was not significantly affected by changing density. In contrast, frequency-independent preferences changed significantly with density. At low densities, there was a strong bias towards the more conspicuous colour, whereas at higher densities there was no overall colour bias. Flight distances between flowers decreased significantly at high density. Bumblebees also visited flowers of similar colours sequentially, but this behaviour was not density-dependent. It is suggested that as densities increase, there is an increased probability that bumblebees detect yellow flowers, which were probably less conspicuous compared with blue flowers, and that this might be caused by changes in flight speed with flight distance. Where there is a positive relationship between pollinator visitation and the relative fitness of a floral morph, the observed behaviour would induce positive frequency-dependent selection on a plant population with two corolla colour morphs on which the bumblebees were foraging, which would result in stabilizing selection for a single corolla colour, irrespective of density. There was no indication that rare colour morphs would be preferred at high density. The probability of different corolla colour morphs going to fixation would, however, be affected by density.  相似文献

Shell colour polymorphism was examined in populations of a mangrove snail Littorina sp. in Queensland, Australia. Three morphs were recognized, yellow, red and brown, and morph frequencies varied both between widely spaced populations and between islands less than 1 km apart. Morph frequencies also varied with time of year. There was a relationship between shell colour and position on the tree, with yellow snails more often occurring amongst the foliage and brown snails more often on trunks and branches. In some populations yellow snails appeared to survive better than the other morphs, while in other populations there was no difference. The evidence for the maintenance of the polymorphism by natural selection is discussed.  相似文献

The selective significance, if any, of many invertebrate visible polymorphisms is still not fully understood. Here we examine colour- and black spotting-morph frequencies in the spider Enoplognatha ovata in populations on two Swedish archipelagos with respect to different spatial scales and, in one archipelago, against the background of variation at four putative neutral allozyme marker loci. Every population studied was polymorphic for colour and 28 out of 30 contained all three colour morphs – lineata, redimita and ovata. We found no evidence for a breakdown in the traditional colour morph designation previously suggested for other northern European populations of this species. For colour there is no significant heterogeneity at spatial scales greater than between local populations within islands. Black spotting frequencies show a similar lack of pattern over larger spatial scales except that there are significant differences between the Stockholm and Göteborg archipelagos. Measures of population differentiation (θ) within the Stockholm islands for the two visible systems show them to be significantly more differentiated than the neutral markers, suggesting local selection acting on them in a population-specific manner. On the basis of previous observations and the distribution of spotting phenotypes on a European scale, it is argued that thermal selection might operate on black spotting during the juvenile stages favouring more spots in continental climates. In order to estimate the three independent components of mating behaviour, sexual selection in females, sexual selection in males and mating pattern, we studied the distribution of shell colour morphs among mating pairs and between copulating and non-copulating snails in four subsamples of a natural population ofL. mariae. The colour of the shell, the sex and a qualitative estimate of age was recorded for every snail. We found sexual selection acting against one of the two commonest colours (yellow) among the young females. However, in males none of the eight shell colour morphs was favoured during matings. Male sexual choice or differences in female sexual activity may cause the sexual fitness disadvantage of yellow females. Moreover, individuals of different colour morphs did not mate at random, rather dissasortatively. A behavioural choice among shell colour morphs or a non-random microdistribution of the morphs may cause the departure from random mating in this population.  相似文献

Progressive background in moths, and a quantitative measure of crypsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A method is presented for quantitative estimation of the degree of crypsis of species seen by visual predators against known backgrounds. It is based upon a comparison between transects taken across animal and background colour patterns. The method was applied to day-resting moths in deciduous forest in New Jersey. Each species is found for two to four weeks at characteristic dates, and there is a constant turnover of species. In both moths and backgrounds there is a regular change in the colour pattern parameters from winter through spring to early summer. Moths are on average more cryptic at their normal dates than they would be if present earlier or later in the year. Species with known resting sites are on average more cryptic on their resting sites than other background habitats. Species that rest on more than one background habitat are less cryptic on their preferred habitats than are specialists. Species that rest under leaves and are not visible from above are not very cryptic. Specific v. general resemblance, disruptive coloration, and factors affecting 'aspect diversity' are discussed. The new method of estimating crypsis is useful for studies of crypsis as well as in sexual selection. It is necessary to know much about the resting sites and behaviour of moths, as well as other functions of colour patterns, to understand colour pattern evolution.  相似文献

Forty-one mixed samples of winkles containing the closely related species, Littorina rudis and L. arcana , were collected from different parts of the British Isles. Littorina rudis was the more ubiquitous species, with L. arcana being more-or-less confined to vertical cliffs and rocks. The frequencies of different shell colour patterns were determined for both species in each sample. Several colour morphs were diagnostic of one or other of the species over large areas, which confirms that these are separate species. The frequencies, in the two species, of the two commonest morphs, brown and fawn, were strongly correlated; in several other morphs their presence and absence in the two species was significantly associated; the levels of phenotypic diversity in the two species were also correlated. These patterns could not have arisen if the variation between shores was the result of genetic drift or founder effects, so some form of selection is implicated. In the brown morph there is some evidence for frequency-dependent selection, and it is suggested that the polymorphism may be maintained by visual predators through apostatic selection.  相似文献

Pinctada margaritifera is French Polynesia's most economically important aquaculture species. This pearl oyster has the specific ability to produce cultured pearls with a very wide range of colours, depending on the colour phenotypes of donor oysters used. Its aquaculture is still based on natural spat collection from wild stocks. We investigated three rare colour variants of P. margaritifera – orange flesh, and red and white shell colour phenotypes – in comparison with the wild‐type black flesh and shell commonly found in this species. The study aimed to assess the geographic distribution and genetic basis of these colour variants. Colour frequencies were evaluated during transfer and graft processes of pearl oyster seed captured at collector stations. Among the collection locations studied, Mangareva Island showed the highest rate of the orange flesh phenotype, whereas Takaroa and Takume atolls had relatively high rates of red and white shell phenotypes respectively. Broodstocks were made of these rare colour variants, and crosses were performed to produce first‐ and second‐generation progenies to investigate segregation. The results were consistent with Mendelian ratios and suggest a distinct model with no co‐dominance: (i) a two‐allele model for flesh trait, whereby the orange allele is recessive to the black fleshed type, and (ii) a three‐allele model for shell trait, whereby the black wild‐type allele is dominant to the red coloration, which is dominant to the white shell. Furthermore, the proposed model provides the basis for producing selected donor pearl oyster lines through hatchery propagation.  相似文献

The marine snail, Littoraria filosa, is polymorphic for shell colour, with yellow, brown, and pink morphs that correspond in both appearance and frequency to the predominant background colours of its habitat. Previous research on this polymorphism has found indirect evidence of apostatic selection and selection for crypsis by unknown agents, probably crabs, and direct evidence of selection for crypsis by the parasitoid fly Sarcophaga megafilosia. In the present study, we report on field experiments to investigate whether S. megafilosia and shell‐crushing predators exert apostatic selection on L. filosa. For S. megafilosia, seven experimental treatments containing yellow and brown snails in the proportions of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, and 0.9 of each colour were established on mangrove trees and used to separately quantify the proportions of each colour attacked on grey/brown trunks and yellow/green leaves. The results obtained confirmed an earlier finding of selection for crypsis, but only showed slight, but significant, anti‐apostatic selection by S. megafilosia. For shell‐crushing predators, seven experimental treatments containing yellow and brown snails in the proportions of 0.08, 0.17, 0.33, 0.50, 0.66, 0.83, and 0.92 were established on two types of trees that differed in their background proportions of brown and green: (1) trees which had been pruned of approximately 90% of their foliage and (2) unpruned trees. The results obtained showed both selection for crypsis and apostatic selection. Furthermore, a selectively neutral frequency for yellow L. filosa was found for each background, and was less on pruned trees than unpruned ones (and vice versa for brown L. filosa), which can therefore account for the maintenance of a colour polymorphism where the proportions of each morph tend to resemble and correspond in frequency to the colours of the background. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 62–71.  相似文献

Genetically controlled colour polymorphisms provide a physical manifestation of the operation of selection and how this can vary according to the spatial or temporal arrangement of phenotypes, or their frequency in a population. Here, we examine the role of selection in shaping the exuberant colour polymorphism exhibited by the spider Theridion californicum. This species is part of a system in which several distantly related spiders in the same lineage, but living in very different geographical areas, exhibit remarkably convergent polymorphisms. These polymorphisms are characterized by allelic inheritance and the presence of a single common cryptic morph and, in the case of T. californicum and its congener the Hawaiian happy-face spider Theridion grallator, numerous rare patterned morphs. We compare population differentiation estimated from colour phenotypic data to differentiation at neutral amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) loci and demonstrate that the colour polymorphism appears to be maintained by balancing selection. We also examine the patterns of selection in the genome-wide sample of AFLP loci and compare approaches to detecting signatures of selection in this context. Our results have important implications regarding balancing selection, suggesting that selective agents can act in a similar manner across disparate taxa in globally disjunct locales resulting in parallel evolution of exuberant polymorphism.  相似文献

Clines can signal spatially varying selection and therefore have long been used to investigate the role of environmental heterogeneity in maintaining genetic variation. However, clinal patterns alone are not sufficient to reject neutrality or to establish the mechanism of selection. Indirect, inferential methods can be used to address neutrality and mechanism, but fully understanding the adaptive significance of clinal variation ultimately requires a direct approach. Ecological model systems such as the rocky intertidal provide a useful context for direct experimentation and can serve as a complement to studies in more traditional genetic model systems. In this study, we use indirect and direct approaches to investigate the role of environmental heterogeneity in the maintenance of shell colour polymorphism in the flat periwinkle snail, Littorina obtusata. We document replicated clines in shell colour morph frequencies over thermal gradients at two spatial scales, contrasting with patterns at previously reported microsatellite loci. In addition, experimental results demonstrate that that shell colour has predictable effects on shell temperature and that these differences in temperature, in turn, coincide with patterns of survivorship under episodic thermal stress. Direct manipulation of shell colour revealed that shell colour, and not a correlated character, was the target of selection. Our study provides evidence that spatially varying selection via thermal regime contributes to the maintenance of shell colour phenotype variation in L. obtusata in the sampled areas of the Gulf of Maine.  相似文献

Variation in colour/pattern morph frequencies in Eupteryx urticae and E. cyclops is described for various field populations. Eupteryx urticae populations in S Wales exhibit a steep morph-ratio cline, such that black morph frequencies are positively correlated with altitude. High melanic frequencies at high-altitude sites, and the absence of the two darker morphs in lowland populations, suggest a similar trend in E. cyclops , but the data are insufficient to confirm this statistically. No differences in morph frequencies were detected on different parts of the primary host plant or on alternative host species. Similarly, there were no consistent trends within or between the two annual generations of either species, although melanic morph frequencies in one E. urticae population were heterogeneous over 10 generations. It is suggested that the polymorphism in E. urticae is strongly influenced by climate selection, darker morphs being at an advantage in cooler environments where their coloration enhances absorption of solar radiation. The advantage gained through thermal melanism is probably balanced by visual selection against black morphs by entomophagous parasitoids.  相似文献

1. The ability to achieve optimal camouflage varies between microhabitats in heterogeneous environments, potentially restricting individuals to a single habitat or imposing a compromise on crypsis to match several habitats. However, animals may exhibit morphological and behavioural attributes that enhance crypsis in different habitats. 2. We used an undescribed fish species, Galaxias‘nebula’, to investigate two objectives. First, we examined two potential methods of enhancing crypsis: change in colour pattern and selection of a suitable background. Second, we characterised the colour pattern of this unstudied fish and assessed its capacity for crypsis. 3. No background selection was apparent but the area of dark pigment expressed varied between backgrounds, which may negate the requirement to be choosy about habitats. The capacity to change colour and selection of a background that maximises crypsis are most likely separate, non‐mutually exclusive strategies. 4. Galaxias‘nebula’ exhibits polymorphic, non‐interchangeable colour patterns that have elements of both background pattern matching and disruptive colouration. This, coupled with habitat characteristics, suggests a combination of generalist and specialist strategies of habitat use. The fish’s camouflage strategy and air‐breathing ability may be key to survival under increasing pressure from habitat degradation and invasive predators.  相似文献

How polymorphisms are maintained within populations over long periods of time remains debated, because genetic drift and various forms of selection are expected to reduce variation. Here, we study the genetic architecture and maintenance of phenotypic morphs that confer crypsis in Timema cristinae stick insects, combining phenotypic information and genotyping‐by‐sequencing data from 1,360 samples across 21 populations. We find two highly divergent chromosomal variants that span megabases of sequence and are associated with colour polymorphism. We show that these variants exhibit strongly reduced effective recombination, are geographically widespread and probably diverged millions of generations ago. We detect heterokaryotype excess and signs of balancing selection acting on these variants through the species’ history. A third chromosomal variant in the same genomic region likely evolved more recently from one of the two colour variants and is associated with dorsal pattern polymorphism. Our results suggest that large‐scale genetic variation associated with crypsis has been maintained for long periods of time by potentially complex processes of balancing selection.  相似文献

Our aim was to test the effects of prey frequency and background composition on selection by free-ranging birds. We did three series of experiments with populations of grey and orange pastry prey scattered among coloured stones that made the prey either conspicuous or inconspicuous. Series 1 tested whether the predicted equilibrium frequency of the two prey types was influenced by the frequency of matching grey and orange stones. Birds at a single site were given a random sequence of combinations of prey frequency and stone frequency. Selection was dependent on background and the effect of prey frequency also varied with background. In series 2, we explored the frequency-independent effect of background: birds at five sites were given equal numbers of the two prey in three frequencies of matching stones and two of non-matching. There was a higher risk of predation for prey that matched rarer stones. In series 3 we attempted to measure, at a single site, the actual equilibrium prey frequencies in three different backgrounds: two extreme stone frequencies and one intermediate. Each experiment started with a population of equal numbers of grey and orange prey. After half the prey had been eaten we calculated the frequencies of the survivors and presented a new population of the original size but with the new prey frequencies; each experiment ran for 25 such 'generations'. The results suggested that at equilibrium the commoner 'morph' was the one that resembled the commoner colour of stone. Overall, our findings support the idea that visual selection can result in morph frequencies becoming related to the proportions of their matching background components and that this equilibrium will 'track' temporal or spatial changes in the background.  相似文献

Juveniles of the common red rock crab of the Northeastern Pacific, Cancer productus, display a stunning diversity of colours and patterns, while adults all have the same drab colouration. Although this is widely known, key questions remain: (1) Does the frequency of different juvenile colours or patterns vary among collection sites or seasonally? (2) Does juvenile colour polymorphism reflect genetic heterogeneity or phenotypic plasticity in response to variable environmental conditions? (3) Do juveniles of different colours or patterns prefer substrata of different heterogeneity or brightness? We therefore: (i) described the variation in colour and pattern of juvenile C. productus; (ii) tested for associations between colour/pattern morphs and crab size, collection site, and season, in the field; (iii) conducted preliminary tests for habitat preferences (background colour, substratum type, light level) of different colour/pattern morphs in laboratory experiments, and (iv) tested the effect of diet (mussels versus shrimp) and feeding rate (high versus low) on juvenile colour/pattern. We describe 30 phenotypes that embrace a wide range of colour and pattern variants. The proportions of these phenotypes did not vary significantly among four collection sites, but they did vary significantly with season: over the summer and fall, juvenile colour and pattern variation was gradually replaced by the uniform adult colouration. The number of crabs displaying adult colouration also increased with crab size. Laboratory experiments suggest no significant preferences of different juvenile morphs for different backgrounds, substrata, or light levels. Diet (mussels versus shrimp) and feeding frequency had no effect on colour/pattern. Collectively, these results, although limited in scope, are not consistent with two likely hypotheses that could explain the extensive colour and pattern variation in juvenile C. productus: (i) selection for background matching by different cryptic forms and (ii) direct effects of diet or feeding rate on colour or pattern. Most probably, the large variety of different juvenile morphs is a result of frequency-dependent selection in which abundant variants are attacked disproportionately often and rarer forms are favoured. Juvenile colour polymorphism in C. productus may reduce the vulnerability to visual predators, impede the formation of a search image, and consequently decrease the risk of predation during the juvenile stages.  相似文献

Local populations of the adder, Vipera berus, are polymorphic for dorsal colour pattern, containing both melanistic (black) and zig-zag patterned individuals. Colour patterns in snakes influence crypsis and thermoregulatory capacity and therefore may be subjected to natural selection. To find an explanation for the maintenance of this polymorphism I examined temporal and spatial variation in morph frequency, and tested for differential selection among morphs using data from a six year capture-mark-recapture study. The data derive from six groups of islands in the Baltic Sea off the Swedish east coast, two mainland localities near the coast, and one inland locality. Morph frequency did not change over time within a population but varied among populations: melanistic individuals were not found at the inland locality, but comprised from 17 to 62% of the coastal and island populations. Adders frequently moved between islands within a group, but the tendency to disperse was independent of morph. These results suggest that the polymorphism is stable and maintained by a deterministic process. Scar frequency was twice as high among melanistic as among zig-zag snakes, and melanistic individuals were easier to capture, indicating that predation may be higher on the melanistic morph. Colour morphs did not differ in body size, but analysis of recapture data shows evidence for differential survival among morphs. Zig-zag males survived better than melanistic males, but the relative survival rates of morphs were reversed in females. This difference was consistent through time and may be due to sexual differences in behaviour, with melanism increasing predation intensity when associated with male but not with female behaviour. Opposing fitness consequences of colour pattern in the two sexes may help maintain colour polymorphism within populations of Vipera berus.  相似文献
