Histochemical studies on localisation of lipids, lipase and phosphomonoeste-rases in the crown skin of male baya during non-breeding and breeding seasons were carried out. The results indicated a high turnover rate for lipid synthesis and its utilisation, increased acid and alkaline phosphatase activities in the crown skin of breeding male baya as compared to that in non-breeding season. It is surmised that crown skin of male baya becomes metabolically hyperactive during breeding season aiding processes such as cell growth and proliferation, keratinization and production of coloured feathers related to breeding.  相似文献

Androgens and oestrogens both have roles in skin physiology. Recently a second oestrogen receptor (ERbeta) has been identified in androgen-dependent tissues. The red deer grows a breeding season, androgen-dependent mane when plasma testosterone rises; this is replaced with small neck hairs during the non-breeding season. In non-breeding season deer skin, ERbeta was localised to the blood vessels and arrector pili muscle, but in contrast to human skin, not in the pilosebaceous unit or epidermis. The androgen receptor was not expressed. Further studies with breeding season skin may help to elucidate whether serum androgens or androgen receptor expression can modulate the expression of ERbeta in skin.  相似文献

The goal of this work was to correlate oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA damage with classic semen parameters in spermatozoa and seminal plasma of fertile and subfertile stallions. Oxidation was measured in both lipids and proteins, using the thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) assay and the DNPH carbonyl groups assay, respectively. Sperm DNA damage was monitored using the TUNEL assay. These parameters were monitored in samples obtained during the breeding and the non-breeding seasons. In general, fertile stallions showed better classical semen parameters, and those parameters improved from the non-breeding to the breeding season, although an increase in sperm production was accompanied by a decrease in the semen quality from subfertile stallions in the breeding season. In terms of oxidation levels we found that there were clear differences whether lipids or proteins were considered. In the breeding season there seemed to be a tendency towards normalizing lipid oxidation in spermatozoa and seminal plasma, and protein oxidation in the seminal plasma, of both fertile and subfertile animals. Thus, differences monitored in the non-breeding season were no longer visible. Interestingly, a higher level of protein oxidation was found in the sperm of fertile animals in the breeding season. Considering that there were positive correlations between sperm protein oxidation and sperm motility and vitality, these results suggests that the oxidation of semen proteins may be important for sperm function. On the other hand, lipid oxidation in the seminal plasma seemed to be a general indicator for sperm damage. In the non-breeding season positive correlations between lipid and protein oxidation levels in both sperm and seminal plasma and several defects in sperm function were found, but only for subfertile animals, thus suggesting that lipid and protein oxidation may aid in the identification of subfertile stallions during the non-breeding season. Levels of ROS production never seemed to result in compromised sperm DNA integrity, indicating that measurements were within physiological levels and/or that there is an efficient antioxidant activity in stallion sperm cells.  相似文献

Circadian variations of plasma melatonin and prolactin concentrations were determined during breeding as well as non-breeding seasons in yak. Blood samples (5 ml) were collected during different phases of estrous cycle, viz. early (0-6 days), mid (7-12 days) and late luteal (13-19 days) at 2 h interval for 24 h from eight yaks during one breeding month (November); the same yaks were bled at 2 h interval during one non-breeding month (February) for 24 h. Plasma melatonin concentrations rose sharply (P < 0.01) after sunset to record peak concentrations between midnight and 2 a.m. declining sharply thereafter in both breeding as well as non-breeding seasons. Basal melatonin concentrations were recorded between 0600 and 1600 h. Stage of luteal phase did not influence the diurnal hormone change (P < 0.01). In the breeding season, mean plasma prolactin concentrations displayed circadian variations with maximum value at 0400 h (41.22+ /- 1.5 ng/ml) and minimum at 1400 h (12.0 +/- 4.02 ng/ml). In the non-breeding season plasma prolactin concentrations showed circadian variation with maximum value at 0000 h (59.9 +/- 10.5 ng/ml) and minimum at 1200 h (32.13 +/- 3.2 ng/ml). A positive correlation in breeding (r = 0.75) and in non-breeding season (r = 0.65) between circadian changes in mean plasma prolactin and melatonin concentrations were seen. Circadian changes of mean plasma melatonin concentrations during breeding and non-breeding seasons were not different (P > 0.05). However, mean plasma prolactin concentrations were found to be higher (P < 0.01) in the non-breeding season. Three conclusions were drawn from the study: (i) melatonin and prolactin concentrations followed a circadian pattern of secretion (ii) melatonin and prolactin secretion may be closely interrelated and (iii) higher prolactin concentrations during the non-breeding season could be due to nutritional and environmental stress and hence might be contributing to lack of cyclicity.  相似文献

In many birds and mammals, male territorial aggression is modulated by elevated circulating concentrations of the steroid hormone testosterone (T) during the breeding season. However, many species are territorial also during the non-breeding season, when plasma T levels are basal. The endocrine control of non-breeding territorial aggression differs considerably between species, and previous studies on wintering birds suggest differences between migratory and resident species. We investigated the endocrine modulation of territorial aggression during the breeding and non-breeding season in a resident population of European stonechats (Saxicola torquata rubicola). We recorded the aggressive response to a simulated territorial intrusion in spring and winter. Then, we compared the territorial aggression between seasons and in an experiment in which we blocked the androgenic and estrogenic action of T. We found no difference in the aggressive response between the breeding and the non-breeding season. However, similarly to what is found in migratory stonechats, the hormonal treatment decreased aggressive behaviors in resident males in the breeding season, whereas no effects were recorded in the non-breeding season. When we compared the aggressive responses of untreated birds with those obtained from migratory populations in a previous study, we found that territorial aggression of resident males was lower than that of migratory males during the breeding season. Our results show that in a resident population of stonechats T and/or its metabolites control territorial aggression in the breeding but not in the non-breeding season. In addition, our study supports the hypothesis that migratory status does modulate the intensity of aggressive behavior.  相似文献

Animals have to adjust their physiology to seasonal changes, in response to variation in food availability, social tactics and reproduction. I compared basal corticosterone and testosterone levels in free ranging striped mouse from a desert habitat, comparing between the sexes, breeding and philopatric non-breeding individuals, and between the breeding and the non-breeding season. I expected differences between breeders and non-breeders and between seasons with high and low food availability. Basal serum corticosterone was measured from 132 different individuals and serum testosterone from 176 different individuals of free living striped mice. Corticosterone and testosterone levels were independent of age, body weight and not influenced by carrying a transmitter. The levels of corticosterone and testosterone declined by approximately 50% from the breeding to the non-breeding season in breeding females as well as non-breeding males and females. In contrast, breeding males showed much lower corticosterone levels during the breeding season than all other classes, and were the only class that showed an increase of corticosterone from the breeding to the non-breeding season. As a result, breeding males had similar corticosterone levels as other social classes during the non-breeding season. During the breeding season, breeding males had much higher testosterone levels than other classes, which decreased significantly from the breeding to the non-breeding season. My results support the prediction that corticosterone decreases during periods of low food abundance. Variation in the pattern of hormonal secretion in striped mice might assist them to cope with seasonal changes in energy demand in a desert habitat.  相似文献

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) plays an important role in the steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis in the testis through its receptors PAC1, VPAC1 and VPAC2. In this study, we investigated the seasonal expressions of PACAP, PAC1, VPAC1, VPAC2, luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR), steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) and CYP17A1 in the testis of male muskrat during the breeding season and non-breeding season, respectively. Histologically, we observed the presence of Leydig cells, Sertoli cells and various types of germ cells in the testis during the breeding season, yet only Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, spermatogonia and primary spermatocyte during the non-breeding season. In addition, the immunohistochemical localizations of PACAP and VPAC1 were identified in the Leydig cells, spermatogonia and spermatozoa during the breeding season, while only in the Leydig cells and spermatogonia during the non-breeding season, and PAC1 and VPAC2 were localized in the Leydig cells in both seasons, among which LHR, StAR, 3β-HSD and CYP17A1 were also expressed. Meanwhile, the protein and mRNA expression levels of PACAP, PAC1, VPAC1, VPAC2, LHR, FSHR, StAR, 3β-HSD and CYP17A1 in the testis during the breeding season were significantly higher than those during the non-breeding season. These results suggested that PACAP is involved in the regulation of steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis via an endocrine, autocrine or paracrine manner in the testis of muskrat.Key words: Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP), PACAP receptors, steroidogenesis, testis, Ondatra zibethicus.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation represents a threat to several bird species worldwide. Several factors can change across seasons (e.g. bird perception of the landscape, weather conditions, biotic interactions), which can modify the response of bird populations to forest fragmentation. However, most studies have been conducted only during the breeding season. Here we assessed the relationship between forest fragmentation (patch area and patch isolation) with population abundances of resident species during both the breeding and the non-breeding seasons. Bird population abundances (all species in the community, subsets of forest and habitat generalist species and for individual species) were estimated across a gradient of area-isolation in a semi-arid forest in Cordoba, Argentina. Population abundance of the overall avian community and of the subset of forest species declined with patch area reduction independently of the season. By contrast, the subset of habitat generalist species was not affected by patch area reduction or by the increase in patch isolation, either during the breeding or during the non-breeding season. When the analyses were carried out for individual species, we found four forest species and one habitat generalist species whose responses (the relationship between population abundance and patch area or with isolation) were different between breeding and non-breeding seasons. The negative effects of forest fragmentation were found mainly during the breeding season. Our results suggest that reduction of patch area may lead to a reduction of more than 65% of the population abundance of forest bird species, during both the breeding and the non-breeding season. Therefore, there is an urgent need to conserve large forest patches within the region as irreplaceable elements for the conservation of populations of several species.  相似文献

Amongst the 200 deer subspecies worldwide, more than 40 are considered as endangered. In vitro embryo production may represent an efficient way to produce and disseminate offspring from sparse remaining individuals in these species. With a view to establishing a method of in vitro embryo production, we assessed the ovarian response after hormonal stimulation (oFSH), oocyte yield following laporoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) and oocyte developmental competence according to seasonal reproductive status in sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon). Twelve adult sika deer hinds were allocated between two groups and submitted weekly to oFSH follicular growth stimulation followed by LOPU. Hinds in Group A (n=6) were treated first during the breeding season (5 weeks), and then during the non-breeding season (3 weeks). Hinds in Group B (n=6) were submitted to similar procedures but in the reverse order (treated first during the non-breeding season). Cumulus-oocytes complexes (COC) recovered from Group B were allowed to mature in vitro for 24 h in TCM-199 medium supplemented with oFSH, goat follicular fluid and 100 microM cysteamine. In vitro fertilization was performed with frozen/thawed semen in SOFaa medium supplemented with 20% estrous sheep serum and presumptive zygotes were cultured in the presence or absence of ovine oviductal epithelial cell monolayer (oOEC) in SOFaa-BSA medium. Mean number of follicles aspirated per hind per session decreased significantly between breeding and non-breeding season in Group A (9.8+/-0.7 versus 3.2+/-0.7, mean+/-S.E.M., respectively, P<0.001) but did not change between the non-breeding and the subsequent breeding season in Group B (5.3+/-0.7 and 5.7+/-0.7, respectively, P>0.05). Irrespective of the season, good quality COC with complete and compact cumulus investments were recovered allowing a high cleavage rate after in vitro maturation and fertilization. Whereas development to the blastocyst stage did not occur in SOF medium alone, high development rates to the blastocyst stage were observed in oOEC co-culture regardless of season (22% and 34% of total oocytes in co-culture during non-breeding and breeding season, respectively).  相似文献

This study provides endocrine data in relation to behavioral events during the transition of the non-breeding into the breeding season in American bison (Bison bison). Fecal progesterone metabolite patterns (20-oxo-P) were obtained in 13 adult female American bison and hormonal data were correlated with behavioral observations; i.e. copulation, male tending, female tail-up behavior and gestation length. Based on fecal progesterone metabolite patterns, the breeding season started between the middle of July and early August. Predictable short cycles reflected the transition from non-breeding to the breeding season; the luteal phase of these cycles was 4.10+/-0.86 days. Copulations and female tail-up behavior were reliably associated with the hormonally detected ovulation. Male tending behavior was more loosely associated with hormonally detected ovulation. The observed hormonal pattern in the study females indicated that 9 of 10 pregnant cows conceived during the second ovulatory period in the breeding season. One other cow conceived during her third ovulatory period, and one cow did not conceive until later in the breeding season by beginning of October. Gestation duration was on average 266.30+/-1.00 days. In summary, this study confirmed that the bison is a seasonally polyestrous species; the transition from the non-breeding into the breeding season was characterized by short cycles with low progesterone metabolite values.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to show whether it is possible to induce ovulation in the hare by GnRH analogue administration and to carry out an effective artificial insemination (AI). The research was carried out during the breeding and non-breeding season. During the breeding season, plasma progesterone concentrations increased on the 4th day after intramuscular injection of GnRH analogue (buserelin), indicating induced ovulation and corpus luteum development. Prostaglandin F(2)alpha (dinoprost) was an effective luteolytic agent on day 9. During the non-breeding season, the GnRH analogue injection does not cause an increase of progesterone. The 17beta-estradiol concentrations during the breeding and non-breeding season were similar. It was shown that after GnRH analogue administration and artificial insemination with semen diluted in Tris buffer extender 80% females delivered live young (39-43 days after artificial insemination), which proves the effectiveness of inducing ovulation in the hare by means of hormonal stimulation.  相似文献

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the extent to which season and the gonadotropin preparation interferes with the superovulatory response in the dromedary. Adult camels were treated for superovulation during the breeding (November to April) and non-breeding season (May to October). Animals were synchronized by daily i.m. injections of progesterone (125 mg/animal/day, Jurox, UK) for 10 to 14 days. Superovulation was induced by 400mg pFSH alone (Follitropin V, Vetrepharm, Canada) administered in eight descending doses at 12h intervals or a combination of PMSG (2000IU, Folligon, Intervet, The Netherlands), injected with last injection of progesterone and 400mg pFSH in eight descending doses. The follicular development was daily assessed by ultrasonography of the ovaries. The donors were classified as per their response to the superovulatory treatment into very good (>10 follicles), good (5-10 follicle), poor (2-4 follicles) or no response (1 or no follicle) on each ovary. Ovulation was induced by injecting 3000 IU hCG (Chorulon, Intervet) at the time of first mating. The donors were mated twice at an interval of 12h when all or most of the follicles reached to a size of about 1.0-1.7 cm. Camels were flushed non-surgically on Day 6 or 7 after the ovulation. The proportion of camels showing very good response during the breeding as well as non-breeding season was higher (P<0.05) when a combination of pFSH and eCG was used compared with pFSH only. There was no difference (P>0.05) in the proportion of donors flushed successfully (embryos recovered) when treated either with a combination of pFSH and eCG or pFSH alone during the breeding and non-breeding season. The rate of recovery of ova/embryos and proportion of transferable embryos was higher (P<0.05) when donors were treated with pFSH+eCG compared with pFSH only during the breeding as well as non-breeding season. The results may indicate that ova/embryo recovery rate of the dromedary is influenced by the gonadotropin preparation but is not appreciably affected by the season.  相似文献

Eight mature Damascus male goats were randomly divided into two equal groups. The first group served as control and the second group was used to study the effect of exposure to longday (16L/8D) followed by melatonin treatment (2mg/(animal/day)) on semen characteristics and blood hormonal levels during breeding and non-breeding seasons. During breeding season, longday exposure followed by melatonin treatments resulted in significant increases (P<0.01) in means of sperm motility, ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, total sperm output, total functional sperm fraction and blood testosterone concentration, while means of reaction time, dead sperm, abnormal sperm and blood triiodothyronine (T(3)) concentration were significantly decreased (P<0.01). During non-breeding season, longday exposure followed by melatonin treatment exhibited improvements in some reproductive parameters by reducing (P<0.05) reaction time and percentage of dead sperm (P<0.01) and increasing (P<0.05) total functional sperm fraction. Furthermore, longday exposure followed by melatonin treatment resulted in significant increases (P<0.01) in both of blood testosterone and T(3) concentrations. It is concluded that longday exposure followed by melatonin treatment successfully improve semen characteristics of Damascus male goats during breeding and non-breeding seasons. However, the beneficial effects were more pronounced during the breeding season.  相似文献

The histophysiology of both brown and yellow paracloacal glands of control animals from wild populations was analyzed in the breeding and non-breeding seasons and in oophorectomized animals. The effect of estrogens on the scent glands of female Metachirus nudicaudatus was investigated. Radioimmunoassay indicated that estradiol levels in the breeding season were high, while those in the non-breeding season and oophorectomized had minute amounts. No apparent change in gland volume was observed in the various animal groups. Light microscopy showed a wide variation in the number of layers of the holocrine secretory epithelium of the major (brown) gland between the breeding (1–7) and non-breeding season (8–19) and in oophorectomized (8–18) animals. The minor (yellow) gland showed the most evident variation: the holocrine epithelium was restricted to the basal layer in the breeding season, but was restored and exhibited up to eight layers in the non-breeding season and in oophorectomized females. The mean cellular area of the secretory holocrine epithelium in the breeding season was smaller than in the non-breeding period and in castrated animals. On the other hand, the mean cellular areas of tubular glands inserted in both yellow and brown glands in the breeding season were larger than those in the non-breeding season and after castration. The results consistently indicate that the glandular volumes of yellow and brown glands do not depend on estrogens, whereas the holocrine secretory epithelium and tubular glands of both are estrogenic modulation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if common poorwills ( Phalaenoptilus nuttallii ) resist entering torpor during the breeding season. During the summers of 1991 and 1992, we studied poorwills in the Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan, Canada, near the northern limit of their distribution. Since poorwills are monogamous and share incubating and brooding responsibilities, we predicted that the non-incubating or non-brooding bird would enter torpor when stressed energetically (e.g. on cold and/or wet nights). Individuals carrying temperature-sensitive radio transmitters entered torpor significantly less often during the breeding season (two of 195 bird nights) than the non-breeding season (27 of 44 bird nights). During the breeding season we found no birds involved in an active nesting attempt in torpor. We conclude that reproduction constrains the use of torpor by adult birds, but why non-incubating and non-breeding birds did not enter remains unclear.  相似文献

An attempt was made to determine cyclicity in yaks using plasma progesterone during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Fifteen non-lactating yaks were used in this experiment. During the breeding season (July to November), blood samples were collected from 8 yaks at least twice weekly until estrus was observed and then at 2 days interval for 30 days. During the non-breeding season (February to March), blood samples were collected from the same number of yaks at 2-day interval for 30 days. Progesterone was determined in plasma samples by radioimmunoassay. During the breeding season, plasma progesterone at estrus was basal (< or = 0.2 ng/ml). Concentrations increased thereafter with a sharp increase during the late luteal phase, typically reaching peak levels around day 15. Concentrations then declined rapidly over the following 4 days, reaching basal levels at estrus. A high proportion (66.7%) of potential estrous periods (based on progesterone concentrations) went undetected, indicating that silent or weak estrus was a prominent problem in yak cows. During the non-breeding season, three animals were found to be cycling as determined by the patterns of plasma progesterone. Yet, behavioral symptoms of estrus were not observed in any of these yak cows. We conclude that peripheral plasma progesterone concentrations can be used to monitor cyclicity in yak cows effectively.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of semen collection method (artificial vagina compared to electroejaculation), season in which the semen was collected (breeding season compared to non-breeding season), freezing extender (Biladyl(?), Andromed(?) and skim milk based extender) and pre-treatment procedure (washing compared to non-washing) on post-thaw semen quality in buck. Ejaculates from seven bucks of the Blanca-Celtibérica breed were collected by artificial vagina and electroejaculation during the breeding (July to December) and non-breeding season (January to June). Samples were split in two aliquots and one of them was washed. Three freezing extenders were evaluated on washing and non-washing sperm samples. Ejaculates collected by artificial vagina had a greater sperm quality after thawing, with greater values (P≤0.05) for SM (sperm motility), NAR (acrosome intact), YO-PRO-1-/PI- (intact spermatozoa), and Mitotracker+/YO-PRO-1- (spermatozoa with active mitochondria) and lower % DFI (DNA fragmentation index). Thawed sperm samples which were collected during the breeding season had greater values (P≤0.05) for NAR, intact spermatozoa and spermatozoa with active mitochondria, than those semen samples obtained during the non-breeding season. Semen freezing with Biladyl(?) and Andromed(?) resulted in a greater sperm quality (P≤0.05) after thawing in relation to milk-based extender. Washing procedure had no effect on sperm parameters assessed at thawing. Results from the present study suggest that the success of semen cryopreservation in Blanca-Celtibérica goat depends on semen collection method and season, as well as on the extender used. Thus, the post-thaw sperm quality will be greater (P≤0.05) when samples are collected by artificial vagina during the breeding season and when Biladyl(?) or Andromed(?) are used as freezing extenders.  相似文献

Immature oocytes from starfishes were obtained during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. The oocytes were "fertilized" without previous induction of maturation by 1-methyladenine (1-MA) or germinal vesicle breakdown (GVB). Elevation of the fertilization membrane (FM) was observed with eggs obtained during the breeding season, but not observed with eggs obtained during the non-breeding season. Abnormal development was observed when these "fertilized" eggs with a FM were subsequently treated with 1-MA. The results of these experiments indicated that the elevation of FM was independent of GVB or the mixing of nuclear and cytoplasmic components.  相似文献

Grass Wrens Cistothorus platensis build two types of non-breeding nest structures: platforms and dummy nests. Platforms are rudimentary accumulations of grasses concealed between vegetation. Dummy and breeding nests are dome-shaped with a similar structural layer. We used a nest-removal experiment and observational data to evaluate several hypotheses regarding the adaptive significance of building multiple nests in a south temperate population of Grass Wrens. Building non-breeding nests was not a strategy of males to attract additional females, as most of these nests were built after pair formation and both sexes collaborated during building. Building non-breeding nests was not a post-pairing display as the presence of multiple nests did not increase female investment in the breeding attempt: clutch size and female provisioning to nestlings did not differ between experimental and control territories where no non-breeding nests were removed. Similarly, in non-manipulated territories, clutch size and female provisioning were not correlated with the number of non-breeding nests or with males’ nest-building effort. Contrary to this hypothesis, the number of non-breeding nests was associated with delayed clutch initiation and reduced hatching success. The presence of non-breeding nests did not reduce nest predation and brood parasitism, which did not differ between experimental and control territories. We did not detect differences in concealment between non-breeding and breeding nests, suggesting that non-breeding nests were not the result of abandonment before egg-laying to reduce subsequent nest predation. Dummy nests did not provide shelter; they were not used frequently for roosting over the breeding season and were not maintained during the non-breeding season. We suggest that building non-breeding nests may be an attempt by males to manipulate the decision of females to breed with a mate they might otherwise reject or to start reproduction earlier than optimal for the females.  相似文献

The Pampas shorebird community is comprised of species from diverse taxonomic and faunal origin. Four major groups can be recognized: North American migrants residing in coastal Buenos Aires Province during their non-breeding season, Patagonian species wintering locally but breeding further south, Pampean species breeding locally, and Brazil–Paraguayan species present during their breeding season. Because of differences among these groups in the timing and migration patterns, community composition shows marked seasonal variation. Both nesting and non-breeding birds use a diversity of habitat types ranging from littoral sandy beaches to upland grasslands. Throughout the year, however, and in all habitat types, non-breeders predominate in species number and abundance. Intra- and inter-specific patterns of aggression suggest both that resources are limiting, and that non-breeding migrants may play an important role in determining breeding community composition.  相似文献
