Recently, we have shown that an untrained respiratory system does limit the endurance of submaximal exercise (64% peak oxygen consumption) in normal sedentary subjects. These subjects were able to increase breathing endurance by almost 300% and cycle endurance by 50% after isolated respiratory training. The aim of the present study was to find out if normal, endurance trained subjects would also benefit from respiratory training. Breathing and cycle endurance as well as maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold were measured in eight subjects. Subsequently, the subjects trained their respiratory muscles for 4 weeks by breathing 85-160 l.min-1 for 30 min daily. Otherwise they continued their habitual endurance training. After respiratory training, the performance tests made at the beginning of the study were repeated. Respiratory training increased breathing endurance from 6.1 (SD 1.8) min to about 40 min. Cycle endurance at the anaerobic threshold [77 (SD 6) %VO2max] was improved from 22.8 (SD 8.3) min to 31.5 (SD 12.6) min while VO2max and the anaerobic threshold remained essentially the same. Therefore, the endurance of respiratory muscles can be improved remarkably even in trained subjects. Respiratory muscle fatigue induced hyperventilation which limited cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold. After respiratory training, minute ventilation for a given exercise intensity was reduced and cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold was prolonged. These results would indicate the respiratory system to be an exercise limiting factor in normal, endurance trained subjects.  相似文献

Eccentric muscle actions are known to induce temporary muscle damage, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and muscle weakness that may persist for several days. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether DOMS-inducing exercise affects blood lactate responses to subsequent incremental dynamic exercise. Physiological and metabolic responses to a standardised incremental exercise task were measured two days after the performance of an eccentric exercise bout or in a control (no prior exercise) condition. Ten healthy recreationally active subjects (9 male, 1 female), aged 20 (SD 1) years performed repeated eccentric muscle actions during 40 min of bench stepping (knee high step; 15 steps · min−1). Two days after the eccentric exercise, while the subjects experienced DOMS, they cycled on a basket loaded cycle ergometer at a starting work rate of 150 W, with increments of 50 W every 2 min until fatigue. The order of the preceding treatments (eccentric exercise or control) was randomised and the treatments were carried out 2 weeks apart. Two days after the eccentric exercise, all subjects reported leg muscle soreness and exhibited elevated levels of plasma creatine kinase activity (P < 0.05). Endurance time and peak O2 during cycling were unaffected by the prior eccentric exercise. Minute volume, respiratory exchange ratio and heart rate responses were similar but venous blood lactate concentration was higher (P < 0.05) during cycling after eccentric exercise compared with the control condition. Peak blood lactate concentration, observed at 2 min post-exercise was also higher [12.6 (SD 1.4) vs 10.9 SD (1.3) mM; P < 0.01]. The higher blood lactate concentration during cycling exercise after prior eccentric exercise may be attributable to an increased rate of glycogenolysis possibly arising from an increased recruitment of Type II muscle fibres. It follows that determination of lactate thresholds for the purpose of fitness assessment in subjects experiencing DOMS is not appropriate. Accepted: 27 September 1997  相似文献

Previous studies have reported respiratory, cardiac and muscle changes at rest in triathletes 24 h after completion of the event. To examine the effects of these changes on metabolic and cardioventilatory variables during exercise, eight male triathletes of mean age 21.1 (SD 2.5) years (range 17-26 years) performed an incremental cycle exercise test (IET) before (pre) and the day after (post) an official classic triathlon (1.5-km swimming, 40-km cycling and 10-km running). The IET was performed using an electromagnetic cycle ergometer. Ventilatory data were collected every minute using a breath-by-breath automated system and included minute ventilation (V(E)), oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), respiratory exchange ratio, ventilatory equivalent for oxygen (V(E)/VO2) and for carbon dioxide (V(E)/VCO2), breathing frequency and tidal volume. Heart rate (HR) was monitored using an electrocardiogram. The oxygen pulse was calculated as VO2/HR. Arterialized blood was collected every 2 min throughout IET and the recovery period, and lactate concentration was measured using an enzymatic method. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was determined using conventional criteria. Ventilatory threshold (VT) was determined using the V-slope method formulated earlier. Cardioventilatory variables were studied during the test, at the point when the subject felt exhausted and during recovery. Results indicated no significant differences (P > 0.05) in VO2max [62.6 (SD 5.9) vs 64.6 (SD 4.8) ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)], VT [2368 (SD 258) vs 2477 (SD 352) ml x min(-1)] and time courses of VO2 between the pre- versus post-triathlon sessions. In contrast, the time courses of HR and blood lactate concentration reached significantly higher values (P < 0.05) in the pre-triathlon session. We concluded that these triathletes when tested 24 h after a classic triathlon displayed their pre-event aerobic exercise capacity, bud did not recover pretriathlon time courses in HR or blood lactate concentration.  相似文献

To compare the results obtained by incremental or constant work load exercises in the evaluation of endurance conditioning, a 20-week training programme was performed by 9 healthy human subjects on the bicycle ergometer for 1 h a day, 4 days a week, at 70-80% VO2max. Before and at the end of the training programme, (1) the blood lactate response to a progressive incremental exercise (18 W increments every 2nd min until exhaustion) was used to determine the aerobic and anaerobic thresholds (AeT and AnT respectively). On a different day, (2) blood lactate concentrations were measured during two sessions of constant work load exercises of 20 min duration corresponding to the relative intensities of AeT (1st session) and AnT (2nd session) levels obtained before training. A muscle biopsy was obtained from vastus lateralis at the end of these sessions to determine muscle lactate. AeT and AnT, when expressed as % VO2max, increased with training by 17% (p less than 0.01) and 9% (p less than 0.05) respectively. Constant workload exercise performed at AeT intensity was linked before training (60% VO2max) to a blood lactate steady state (4.8 +/- 1.4 mmol.l-1) whereas, after training, AeT intensity (73% VO2max) led to a blood lactate accumulation of up to 6.6 +/- 1.7 mmol.l-1 without significant modification of muscle lactate (7.6 +/- 3.1 and 8.2 +/- 2.8 mmol.kg-1 wet weight respectively). We determined changes in rat plantaris, diaphragm, and intercostal muscle metabolites following exercise of various intensities and durations, in normoxia and hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12). Marked alveolar hyperventilation occurred during all exercise conditions, suggesting that respiratory muscle motor activity was high. [ATP] was maintained at rest levels in all muscles during all normoxic and hypoxic exercise bouts, but at the expense of creatine phosphate (CP) in plantaris muscle and diaphragm muscle following brief exercise at maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) in normoxia. In normoxic exercise plantaris [glycogen] fell as exercise exceeded 60% VO2max, and was reduced to less than 50% control during exhaustive endurance exercise (68% VO2max for 54 min and 84% for 38 min). Respiratory muscle [glycogen] was unchanged at VO2max as well as during either type of endurance exercise. Glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) rose consistently during heavy exercise in diaphragm but not in plantaris. With all types of exercise greater than 84% VO2max, lactate concentration ([LA]) in all three muscles rose to the same extent as arterial [LA], except at VO2max, where respiratory muscle [LA] rose to less than half that in arterial blood or plantaris. Exhaustive exercise in hypoxia caused marked hyperventilation and reduced arterial O2 content; glycogen fell in plantaris (20% of control) and in diaphragm (58%) and intercostals (44%). We conclude that respiratory muscle glycogen stores are spared during exhaustive exercise in the face of substantial glycogen utilization in plantaris, even under conditions of extreme hyperventilation and reduced O2 transport. This sparing effect is due primarily to G6P inhibition of glycogen phosphorylase in diaphragm muscle. The presence of elevated [LA] in the absence of glycogen utilization suggests that increased lactate uptake, rather than lactate production, occurred in the respiratory muscles during exhaustive exercise.  相似文献

The response of respiratory gas exchanges to a 6 week high intensity training program was examined in 5 healthy males during fixed term maximal incremental treadmill exercise. Training was performed 3 d.wk-1 and consisted of a progressive series of repeated 15 sec and 30 sec maximal runs, and weight training exercises for the leg extensor muscles. Respiratory gases during the tests were continuously monitored using an on-line system. Muscle biopsy samples were obtained from the m. vastus lateralis before and after training for histochemical determination of fibre distribution based on myosin ATP-ase activity, and fibre cross-sectional area based on NADH-Tetrazolium Reductase activity. Training significantly increased the proportion of type IIa fibres (+5.9 +/- 2.0%, p less than 0.001) and decreased type I fibres (-6.3 +/- 2.0%, p less than 0.001), the distribution of type IIb fibres remained unchanged (+0.4 +/- 0.9%). Muscle cross-sectional area also showed a significant increase after training in type I (+318 +/- 215 microns 2, p less than 0.05), IIa (+652 +/- 207 microns 2, p less than 0.001) and IIb (+773 +/- 196 microns 2, p less than 0.001) fibres. During fixed term maximal incremental exercise the mean carbon dioxide output (VCO2) and mean respiratory exchange ratio (R = VCO2/VO2) were significantly increased (p less than 0.01) after training. The R-time relationship was at all times shifted to the left after training, being significantly (p less than 0.01) so over the final five min of exercise. This study was designed to examine the effects of alterations in dietary carbohydrate (CHO) intake on the performance of high-intensity exercise lasting approximately 10 min (EXP 1) and 30 min (EXP 2). Trained subjects exercised to exhaustion on four occasions on a cycle ergometer at 90% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max; EXP 1, n = 5) and 80% of VO2max (EXP 2, n = 7). The first two tests were familiarisation trials and were carried out following the subjects' normal diet. Normal training was continued but standardised during the periods of dietary control. The subsequent two tests were performed 2 weeks apart after 7 days of dietary manipulation. The two diets were a 70% and a 40% CHO diet, isoenergetic with each subject's normal diet and administered in a randomised order. At both exercise intensities, time to exhaustion following the high CHO and low CHO diets was not different [mean (SD) EXP 1: 11.56 (3.78) min and 8.95 (2.35) min, P = 0.22; EXP 2: 26.9 (7.4) min and 26.5 (6.5) min, P = 0.90]. No differences in resting blood metabolite concentrations were found apart from a lower beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-HB) level following the high CHO diet in EXP 2. Blood lactate was higher after exercise at 90% of VO2max following the high CHO diet. Blood lactate was higher, and beta-HB lower during exercise at 80% of VO2max following the high CHO diet. No differences were found in the other blood metabolites tested. The respiratory exchange ratio after 15 min of exercise at 80% of VO2max was higher on the high CHO diet. No differences in oxygen uptake, heart rate (EXP 2) or ratings of perceived exertion (both experiments) were found between conditions. These results indicate that moderate changes in diet composition during training do not affect the performance of high-intensity exercise in trained individuals when the total energy intake is moderately high.  相似文献

Seven trained male cyclists (VO2max = 4.42 +/- 0.23 l.min-1; weight 71.7 +/- 2.7 kg, mean +/- SE) completed two incremental cycling tests on the cycle ergometer for the estimation of the "individual anaerobic threshold" (IAT). The cyclists completed three more exercises in which the work rate incremented by the same protocol, but upon reaching selected work rates of approximately 40, 60 and 80% VO2max, the subjects cycled for 60 min or until exhaustion. In these constant load studies, blood lactate concentration was determined on arterialized venous ([La-]av) and deep venous blood ([La-]v) of the resting forearm. The av-v lactate gradient across the inactive forearm muscle was -0.08 mmol.l-1 at rest. After 3 min at each of the constant load work rates, the gradients were +0.05, +0.65* and +1.60* mmol.l-1 (*P less than 0.05). The gradients after 10 min at these same work rates were -0.09, +0.24 and +1.03* mmol.l-1. For the two highest work rates taken together, the lactate gradient was less at 10 min than 3 min constant load exercise (P less than 0.05). The [La-]av was consistently higher during prolonged exercise at both 60 and 80% VO2max than that observed at the same work rate during progressive exercise. At the highest work rate (at or above the IAT), time to exhaustion ranged from 3 to 36 min in the different subjects. These data showed that [La-] uptake across resting muscle continued to increase to work rates above the IAT. Further, the greater av-v lactate gradient at 3 min than 10 min constant load exercise supports the concept that inactive muscle might act as a passive sink for lactate in addition to a metabolic site.  相似文献

The present study was designed to evaluate the specificity of physiological adaptation to extra endurance training in five female competitive walkers and six female distance runners. The mean velocity (v) during training, corresponding to 4 mM blood lactate [onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA)] during treadmill incremental exercise (training v was 2.86 m.s-1, SD 0.21 in walkers and 4.02 m.s-1, SD 0.11 in runners) was added to their normal training programme and was performed for 20 min, 6 days a week for 8 weeks, and was called extra training. An additional six female distance runners performed only their normal training programme every day for about 120 min at an exercise intensity equivalent to their lactate threshold (LT) (i.e. a running v of about 3.33 m.s-1). After the extra training, there were statistically significant increases in blood lactate variables (i.e. oxygen uptake (VO2) at LT, v at LT, VO2 at OBLA, v at OBLA; P less than 0.05), and running v for 3,000 m (P less than 0.01) in the running training group. In the walking training group, there were significant increases in blood lactate variables (i.e., v at LT, v at OBLA; P less than 0.05), and walking economy. In contrast, there were no significant changes in lactate variables, running v and economy in the group of runners which carried out only the normal training programme. It is suggested that the changes in blood lactate variables such as LT and OBLA played a role in improving v of both the distance runners and the competitive walkers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Seven men and four women (age 63 +/- 2 yr, mean +/- SD, range 61-67 yr) participated in a 12-mo endurance training program to determine the effects of low-intensity (LI) and high-intensity (HI) training on the blood lactate response to submaximal exercise in older individuals. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), blood lactate, O2 uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), ventilation (VE), and respiratory exchange ratio (R) during three submaximal exercise bouts (65-90% VO2max) were determined before training, after 6 mo of LI training, and after an additional 6 mo of HI training. VO2max (ml X kg-1 X min-1) was increased 12% after LI training (P less than 0.05), while HI training induced a further increase of 18% (P less than 0.01). Lactate, HR, VE, and R were significantly lower (P less than 0.05) at the same absolute work rates after LI training, while HI training induced further but smaller reductions in these parameters (P greater than 0.05). In general, at the same relative work rates (ie., % of VO2max) after training, lactate was lower or unchanged, HR and R were unchanged, and VO2 and VE were higher. These findings indicate that LI training in older individuals results in adaptations in the response to submaximal exercise that are similar to those observed in younger populations and that additional higher intensity training results in further but less-marked changes.  相似文献

To determine whether the reduced blood lactate concentrations [La] during submaximal exercise in humans after endurance training result from a decreased rate of lactate appearance (Ra) or an increased rate of lactate metabolic clearance (MCR), interrelationships among blood [La], lactate Ra, and lactate MCR were investigated in eight untrained men during progressive exercise before and after a 9-wk endurance training program. Radioisotope dilution measurements of L-[U-14C]lactate revealed that the slower rise in blood [La] with increasing O2 uptake (VO2) after training was due to a reduced lactate Ra at the lower work rates [VO2 less than 2.27 l/min, less than 60% maximum VO2 (VO2max); P less than 0.01]. At power outputs closer to maximum, peak lactate Ra values before (215 +/- 28 mumol.min-1.kg-1) and after training (244 +/- 12 mumol.min-1.kg-1) became similar. In contrast, submaximal (less than 75% VO2max) and peak lactate MCR values were higher after than before training (40 +/- 3 vs. 31 +/- 4 ml.min-1.kg-1, P less than 0.05). Thus the lower blood [La] values during exercise after training in this study were caused by a diminished lactate Ra at low absolute and relative work rates and an elevated MCR at higher absolute and all relative work rates during exercise.  相似文献

The present investigation was undertaken to examine the relationship between plasma potassium (K+) and ventilation (VE) during incremental exercise. Blood lactate (La-) was also measured, and its relationship with VE was similarly examined. Eight endurance-trained triathletes (ET) and eight active but untrained men (UT) performed an incremental cycling test to volitional fatigue. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and oxygen uptake (VO2) at lactate threshold (LT) were higher (P < 0.05) in ET (VO2max 4.60 +/- 0.10 l/min, LT 2.77 +/- 0.85 l/min) than in UT (VO2max 3.79 +/- 0.11 l/min, LT 1.94 +/- 0.60 l/min). There were significant (P < 0.05) correlations between VE and K+ (UT 0.87, ET 0.77) and between VE and La- (UT 0.88, ET 0.85). In ET compared with UT, VE was lower (P < 0.05) at 330 W, K+ was lower at 300 and 330 W, and La- was lower at all work loads > 90 W. These results suggest that K+ may make an important contribution to the regulation of ventilation during incremental exercise and that endurance training attenuates the K+ response to that exercise.  相似文献

In order to test for possible sex differences in endurance capacity, groups of young, physically active women (n = 6) and men (n = 7) performed bicycle ergometer exercise at 80% and 90% of their maximal oxygen uptakes (VO2 max). The groups were matched for age and physical activity habits. At 80% VO2 max the women performed significantly longer (P less than 0.05), 53.8 +/- 12.7 min vs 36.8 +/- 12.2 min, respectively (means +/- SD). Mid-exercise and terminal respiratory exchange ratio (R) values were significantly lower in women, suggesting a later occurrence of muscle glycogen depletion as a factor in their enhanced endurance. At 90% VO2 max the endurance times were similar for men and women, 21.2 +/- 10.3 min and 22.0 +/- 5.0 min, respectively. The blood lactate levels reached in these experiments were only marginally lower (mean differences 1.5 to 2 mmol X l-1) than those obtained at VO2 max, suggesting high lactate levels as a factor in exhaustion. The changes in body weight during the 80% experiments and the degree of hemoconcentration were not significantly different between men and women.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to investigate the respiratory system as an exercise limiting factor. Breathing and cycle endurance (i.e. the time until exhaustion at a given performance level) as well as physical working capacity 170 (i.e. the exercise intensity corresponding to a heart rate of 170 beats.min-1 on a cycle ergometer) were determined in four healthy sedentary subjects. Subsequently, the subjects trained their respiratory system for 4 weeks by breathing daily about 90 l.min-1 for 30 min. Otherwise they continued their sedentary lifestyle. Immediately after the respiratory training and 18 months later, all performance tests carried out at the beginning of the study were repeated. The respiratory training increased breathing endurance from 4.2 (SD 1.9) min to 15.3 (SD 3.8) min. Cycle endurance was improved from 26.8 (SD 5.9) min to 40.2 (SD 9.2) min whereas physical working capacity 170 remained essentially the same. During the endurance cycling test in the respiratory untrained state, the subjects continuously increased their ventilation up to hyperventilation [ventilation at exhaustion = 96.9 (SD 23.6) l.min-1] while after the respiratory training they reached a respiratory steady-state without hyperventilation [ventilation at exhaustion = 63.3 (SD 14.5) l.min-1]. The absence of this marked hyperventilation was the cause of the impressive increase of cycle endurance in normal sedentary subjects after respiratory training. The effects gained by the respiratory training were completely lost after 18 months. Our results indicated that the respiratory system was an exercise limiting factor during an endurance test in normal sedentary subjects.  相似文献

Our laboratory recently showed that six sessions of sprint interval training (SIT) over 2 wk increased muscle oxidative potential and cycle endurance capacity (Burgomaster KA, Hughes SC, Heigenhauser GJF, Bradwell SN, and Gibala MJ. J Appl Physiol 98: 1895-1900, 2005). The present study tested the hypothesis that short-term SIT would reduce skeletal muscle glycogenolysis and lactate accumulation during exercise and increase the capacity for pyruvate oxidation via pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH). Eight men [peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak)=3.8+/-0.2 l/min] performed six sessions of SIT (4-7x30-s "all-out" cycling with 4 min of recovery) over 2 wk. Before and after SIT, biopsies (vastus lateralis) were obtained at rest and after each stage of a two-stage cycling test that consisted of 10 min at approximately 60% followed by 10 min at approximately 90% of VO2 peak. Subjects also performed a 250-kJ time trial (TT) before and after SIT to assess changes in cycling performance. SIT increased muscle glycogen content by approximately 50% (main effect, P=0.04) and the maximal activity of citrate synthase (posttraining: 7.8+/-0.4 vs. pretraining: 7.0+/-0.4 mol.kg protein -1.h-1; P=0.04), but the maximal activity of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase was unchanged (posttraining: 5.1+/-0.7 vs. pretraining: 4.9+/-0.6 mol.kg protein -1.h-1; P=0.76). The active form of PDH was higher after training (main effect, P=0.04), and net muscle glycogenolysis (posttraining: 100+/-16 vs. pretraining: 139+/-11 mmol/kg dry wt; P=0.03) and lactate accumulation (posttraining: 55+/-2 vs. pretraining: 63+/-1 mmol/kg dry wt; P=0.03) during exercise were reduced. TT performance improved by 9.6% after training (posttraining: 15.5+/-0.5 vs. pretraining: 17.2+/-1.0 min; P=0.006), and a control group (n=8, VO2 peak=3.9+/-0.2 l/min) showed no change in performance when tested 2 wk apart without SIT (posttraining: 18.8+/-1.2 vs. pretraining: 18.9+/-1.2 min; P=0.74). We conclude that short-term SIT improved cycling TT performance and resulted in a closer matching of glycogenolytic flux and pyruvate oxidation during submaximal exercise.  相似文献

To test the hypotheses that short-term bed-rest (BR) deconditioning influences metabolic, cardiorespiratory, and neurohormonal responses to exercise and that these effects depend on the subjects' training status, 12 sedentary men and 10 endurance- and 10 strength-trained athletes were submitted to 3-day BR. Before and after BR they performed incremental exercise test until volitional exhaustion. Respiratory gas exchange and heart rate (HR) were recorded continuously, and stroke volume (SV) was measured at submaximal loads. Blood was taken for lactate concentration ([LA]), epinephrine concentration ([Epi]), norepinephrine concentration ([NE]), plasma renin activity (PRA), human growth hormone concentration ([hGH]), testosterone, and cortisol determination. Reduction of peak oxygen uptake (VO(2 peak)) after BR was greater in the endurance athletes than in the remaining groups (17 vs. 10%). Decrements in VO(2 peak) correlated positively with the initial values (r = 0.73, P < 0.001). Resting and exercise respiratory exchange ratios were increased in athletes. Cardiac output was unchanged by BR in all groups, but exercise HR was increased and SV diminished in the sedentary subjects. The submaximal [LA] and [LA] thresholds were decreased in the endurance athletes from 71 to 60% VO(2 peak) (P < 0.001); they also had an earlier increase in [NE], an attenuated increase in [hGH], and accentuated PRA and cortisol elevations during exercise. These effects were insignificant in the remaining subjects. In conclusion, reduction of exercise performance and modifications in neurohormonal response to exercise after BR depend on the previous level and mode of physical training, being the most pronounced in the endurance athletes.  相似文献

Fourteen competitive cyclists who possessed a similar maximum O2 consumption (VO2 max; range, 4.6-5.0 l/min) were compared regarding blood lactate responses, glycogen usage, and endurance during submaximal exercise. Seven subjects reached their blood lactate threshold (LT) during exercise of a relatively low intensity (group L) (i.e., 65.8 +/- 1.7% VO2 max), whereas exercise of a relatively high intensity was required to elicit LT in the other seven men (group H) (i.e., 81.5 +/- 1.8% VO2 max; P less than 0.001). Time to fatigue during exercise at 88% of VO2 max was more than twofold longer in group H compared with group L (60.8 +/- 3.1 vs. 29.1 +/- 5.0 min; P less than 0.001). Over 92% of the variance in performance was related to the % VO2 max at LT and muscle capillary density. The vastus lateralis muscle of group L was stressed more than that of group H during submaximal cycling (i.e., 79% VO2 max), as reflected by more than a twofold greater (P less than 0.001) rate of glycogen utilization and blood lactate concentration. The quality of the vastus lateralis in groups H and L was similar regarding mitochondrial enzyme activity, whereas group H possessed a greater percentage of type I muscle fibers (66.7 +/- 5.2 vs. 46.9 +/- 3.8; P less than 0.01). The differing metabolic responses to submaximal exercise observed between the two groups appeared to be specific to the leg extension phase of cycling, since the blood lactate responses of the two groups were comparable during uphill running. We tested the hypothesis that the lactate threshold (Tlac) during incremental exercise could be increased significantly during the first 3 wk of endurance training without any concomitant change in the ventilatory threshold (Tvent). Tvent is defined as O2 uptake (VO2) at which ventilatory equivalent for O2 [expired ventilation per VO2 (VE/VO2)] increased without a simultaneous increase in the ventilatory equivalent for CO2 (VE/VCO2). Weekly measurements of ventilatory gas exchange and blood lactate responses during incremental and steady-rate exercise were performed on six subjects (4 male; 2 female) who exercised 6 days/wk, 30 min/session at 70-80% of pretraining VO2max for 3 wk. Pretraining Tlac and Tvent were not significantly different. After 3 wk of training, significant increases (P less than 0.05) occurred for mean (+/- SE) VO2max (392 +/- 103 ml/min) and Tlac (482 +/- 135 ml/min). Tvent did not change during the 3 wk of training, despite significant (P less than 0.05) reductions in VE responses to both incremental and steady-rate exercise. Thus ventilatory adaptations to exercise during the first 3 wk of exercise training were not accompanied by a detectable alteration in the ventilatory "threshold" during a 1-min incremental exercise protocol. The mean absolute difference between pairs of Tlac and Tvent posttraining was 499 ml/min. Despite the significant training-induced dissociation between Tlac and Tvent a high correlation between the two parameters was obtained posttraining (r = 0.86, P less than 0.05). Respiratory muscle fatigue develops during exhaustive exercise and can limit exercise performance. Respiratory muscle training, in turn, can increase exercise performance. We investigated whether respiratory muscle endurance training (RMT) reduces exercise-induced inspiratory and expiratory muscle fatigue. Twenty-one healthy, male volunteers performed twenty 30-min sessions of either normocapnic hyperpnoea (n = 13) or sham training (CON, n = 8) over 4-5 wk. Before and after training, subjects performed a constant-load cycling test at 85% maximal power output to exhaustion (PRE(EXH), POST(EXH)). A further posttraining test was stopped at the pretraining duration (POST(ISO)) i.e., isotime. Before and after cycling, transdiaphragmatic pressure was measured during cervical magnetic stimulation to assess diaphragm contractility, and gastric pressure was measured during thoracic magnetic stimulation to assess abdominal muscle contractility. Overall, RMT did not reduce respiratory muscle fatigue. However, in subjects who developed >10% of diaphragm or abdominal muscle fatigue in PRE(EXH), fatigue was significantly reduced after RMT in POST(ISO) (inspiratory: -17 +/- 6% vs. -9 +/- 10%, P = 0.038, n = 9; abdominal: -19 +/- 10% vs. -11 +/- 11%, P = 0.038, n = 9), while sham training had no significant effect. Similarly, cycling endurance in POST(EXH) did not improve after RMT (P = 0.071), while a significant improvement was seen in the subgroup with >10% of diaphragm fatigue after PRE(EXH) (P = 0.017), but not in the sham training group (P = 0.674). However, changes in cycling endurance did not correlate with changes in respiratory muscle fatigue. In conclusion, RMT decreased the development of respiratory muscle fatigue during intensive exercise, but this change did not seem to improve cycling endurance.  相似文献
