The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) has been a major pest of corn and other crops in North America since its accidental introduction nearly a hundred years ago. Wide adoption of transgenic corn hybrids that express toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis, referred to as Bt corn, has suppressed corn borer populations and reduced the pest status of this insect in parts of the Corn Belt. Continued suppression of this pest, however, will depend on managing potential resistance to Bt corn, currently through the high-dose refuge (HDR) strategy. In this review, we describe what has been learned with regard to O. nubilalis resistance to Bt toxins either through laboratory selection experiments or isolation of resistance from field populations. We also describe the essential components of the HDR strategy as they relate to O. nubilalis biology and ecology. Additionally, recent developments in insect resistance management (IRM) specific to O. nubilalis that may affect the continued sustainability of this technology are considered. 相似文献

It came and went in the blink of an eye and what seemed like a brilliant future for Marxist Anthropology in the mid-1970s now lies in a grave of dead-ended approaches bearing the epitaph 'Political Economy'—the sign which for Marx summed up all that was critically in error in capitalist and capitalizing analysis, hence his sub-title to Capital , A Critique of Political Economy. 相似文献

The goal of this research was to explore differences between lay and professional explanatory models both within and between two countries. We test which effect is stronger, country of residence or professional/lay status, in determining similarities and differences of explanatory models of AIDS. Interviews conducted in Guadalajara, Jalisco (Mexico) and the Edinburg-McAllen area of south Texas (United States) elicited explanatory models of AIDS. Two pairs of samples were interviewed: a physician and community sample in Mexico and a physician and community sample in the United States. Comparisons of the explanatory models indicated that there was a shared core model of AIDS across all four samples, but that physicians' models were more similar to those of lay people in their own communities than either was to samples across the border. 相似文献

Relinquishing a nonhuman animal to a shelter is a complex decision that, it is often believed, ultimately may represent a breakdown of the human-animal bond. The result of such a breakdown is an animal companion surplus in the United States, which is no better evidenced than by the statistics documenting the millions of animals euthanized at shelters every year. This research examined the companion animals who are relinquished by their owners to shelters for adoption and compared them specifically to those relinquished for euthanasia. The study also compared the owner characteristics of the animals in these two groups. Although the majority of dogs and cats relinquished are clearly adoptable, a sizable number of these pets presented to shelters for euthanasia have problems precluding their adoptability: old age, illness, and refractory behavior. 相似文献

Patterns of collective movements, such as the distribution of leadership and the organization of individuals, may be either homogeneously (no leader, no specific order), or heterogeneously (1 or several leaders, and a highly stable order) distributed. Members of a group need to synchronize their activities and coordinate their movements, despite the fact that they differ in physiological or morphological traits. The degree of difference in these traits may affect their decision-making strategy. We demonstrate how a theoretical model based on a variation of a simple mimetic rule, i.e., an amplification process, can result in each of the various collective movement patterns and decision-making strategies observed in primates and other species. We consider cases in which 1) the needs of different individuals are identical and social relationships are equivalent between group members, 2) the needs of individuals are different and social relationships are equivalent, and 3) the needs of individuals are different and social relationships are different. Finally, 4) we assess how the synergy between 2 mimetism rules, specifically the probability of joining a movement and that of canceling an initiation, allows group members to stay synchronized and cohesive. Our models suggest that similar self-organized processes have been selected as reliable and well-adapted means for optimal collective decisions across species, despite differences in their biological and social characteristics. 相似文献

The United States Army and malaria control in World War II 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

The United States Army faced difficult malaria control problems both at home and abroad during World War II. This challenge forced the Army to develop new tools and strategies for use in malarious areas where fighting was occurring. Due to the severe malaria problems being faced in some combat areas and the need to solve these problems quickly, intensive malaria research and operational programs were developed and implemented. With these concerted efforts and the simultaneous development of new control technologies, malaria was successfully controlled in most locations. In order to accomplish this high level of control both in the US and overseas, the Army developed a very organized approach to the malaria problem and implemented it in an effective manner. The creation of new technical solutions was also strongly emphasized and out of this effort came the development of effective antimalaria drugs to replace quinine, of new insecticides and of more effective systems for delivering these insecticides. Some of the major new tools which came out of this research were DDT and drugs such as Atabrine and chloroquine. The availability of Atabrine and DDT revolutionized malaria control throughout the world. The knowledge and experience gained through the use of these new tools by the US Army and other agencies in World War II provided the basis for a new optimism regarding malaria control which then led to the development of the global malaria eradication strategy in the post-war years. 相似文献
