The aim of our study is to describe the mouthparts of Micropterix calthella (Lepidoptera) and their sensilla by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The imaginal mouthparts are primitive. They are well adapted for collecting and grinding pollen of Ranunculus flowers. The maxillary palps show specialized structures for collecting pollen: mushroom-shaped hairs and blade-like structures. The brushes on the epipharynx, the teeth on the mandibles and the triturating basket on the hypopharynx grind the pollen to powder before absorption.Sensilla of different types have been observed on the mouthparts. The labrum, galeae, laciniae, and labial palps possess sensilla chaetica. Epipharynx, galeae, laciniae, and hypopharynx show sensilla basiconica. Sensilla trichoidea have been observed on the laciniae and sensilla campaniformia on the maxillary palps and the hypopharynx. At the top of each maxillary palp is a perforated area of unknown function. Two cavities are present at the distal extremity of each labial palp: one with sensilla coeloconica and the other with a perforated heart-shaped organ. The mushroom-shaped hairs, the blade-like structures, and the perforated heart-shaped organs have not yet been described in other insects.  相似文献

Abstract.Sensitivities to β‐hydrastine, strychnine and picrotoxinin were compared between two populations of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), differing in their susceptibility to cyclodiene insecticides. The antifeedants are antagonists of γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) neuroreceptors that may mediate gustation and, in the case of picrotoxinin, interact directly with the target site for cyclodiene insecticides. In combination with cucurbitacin B, a specific Diabroticite phagostimulant, cyclodiene‐resistant beetles were two‐ to four‐fold less sensitive to hydrastine and strychnine. The discrimination threshold for picrotoxinin was higher for resistant beetles; however, overall dose–response profiles were similar. Beetles were more sensitive to hydrastine and strychnine in combination with L‐alanine, a general phagostimulant of less potency than cucurbitacin B. Dose–response slopes for the alkaloid‐alanine combinations were double those of respective cucurbitacin B slopes, which indicates that phagostimulatory input from l ‐alanine was more negatively affected by the alkaloidal antifeedants than the respective cucurbitacin B treatments. Picrotoxinin sensitivity was similar in mixtures with either phagostimulant. Comparison of chemosensillum responses to strychnine was inconclusive. Results are discussed in context of GABA receptor pharmacology.  相似文献

The various sensilla on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps of Blattella germanica (L.) were studied. Thick-walled chemoreceptors with fluted shafts and articulated bases are located on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps. Thin-walled chemoreceptors, without fluted shafts or articulated bases, are restricted to the flagellar segments of the antennae and to the distal segments of the palps. Antennae of adult males have more thin-walled chemoreceptors than do those of females. Hair-plate sensilla are found at the scape-head and scape-pedicel joints, and at the joints of segments on the palps. Campaniform sensilla are concentrated as a ring around the distal margin of the pedicel, and are also scattered singly on the scape, pedicel, and flagellar segments of the antennae, and on the first segment of the maxillary palps. Occasionally, a few sensilla coeloconica and cold receptor sensilla are found on the antennal flagellum.  相似文献

【目的】探索寄主范围不同的蛀果蛾科(Carposinidae)幼虫感器之间是否存在差异。【方法】采用扫描电子显微镜观察了为害山茱萸Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc.的单食性蛀果害虫--山茱萸蛀果蛾Carposina coreana Kim老熟幼虫触角和口器感器的超微形态。【结果】山茱萸蛀果蛾幼虫触角柄节未见感器分布, 梗节上有2个刺形感器和3个锥形感器, 鞭节上有1个栓锥感器和3个锥形感器。口器上共有6种感器: 刺形感器数量多, 分布广; 栓锥感器主要分布在颚叶、 下颚须和下唇须上; 指形感器位于内唇和下颚须端节侧缘; 锥形感器和板形感器仅存在于下颚上; 内唇感器为内唇所特有。【结论】蛀果蛾幼虫触角和口器的感器与寄主范围之间未发现严格的对应关系。  相似文献

Flower visiting beetles possess numerous structural adaptations of their mouthparts to adhere and ingest pollen grains. Using a Cryo-SEM approach the examination of the mouthparts in rapidly frozen Cetonia aurata (Scarabaeidae) indicates a previously unknown technique of pollen uptake in Coleoptera. Cryo-SEM micrographs of the mouthparts reveal a fluid covering the bristles on the buccal surface. In this way the bristles of the galeae form a wet brush which represents the primary organ of pollen uptake. The fluid improves adhesion of pollen to bristles lacking any specialized adhering surface or highly sculptured cuticle as present in other pollen feeding Coleoptera. The well developed mola region of the otherwise non-biting mandibles of C. aurata indicates that these beetles open pollen grains mechanically before ingestion. Examination of gut content demonstrated that crushed and intact pollen occur in all regions. The Cryo-SEM method represents a new approach to study functional morphology including the interaction of microstructures and fluids on cuticular surfaces of insects. Electrophysiological studies show that at least six sensilla on the various mouthparts of larval Colorado potato beetles (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) contain chemosensory cells. These sensilla are found on the galea, maxillary palps, and labial palps. Sodium chloride, sucrose, some amino acids, and chlorogenic acid are among the effective stimuli. The sensitivity spectrum of these cells correlates with known larval phagostimulants.  相似文献

Labial and maxillary palps in 22 species of ground beetle larvae revealed the presence of four different types of sensilla: sensilla digitiformia, sensilla campaniformia, sensilla basiconica and sensilla chaetica. Using transmission electron microscopy techniques, the role of most of them was defined: sensilla campaniformia and sensilla chaetica are mechanoreceptors; while sensilla basiconica are chemoreceptors. Sensilla digitiformia can be both mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors, though hygroreception may also be postulated on the basis of their abundance on the mouthparts of some hygrophilous species that depend on damp or wet patchy biotopes/seasons. The number and location of the sensory structures has been found to vary among the investigated taxa. The differences are related to the larval behavioural types, and are an adaptive response to different lifestyles, feeding habits and use of space.  相似文献

Abstract. Close-range interactions with plants and the early stages of feeding behaviour of adult Colorado potato beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), were studied using beetles with and without various mouthpart sensilla. Representative host, potato (Solarium tuberosum) , and non-host, tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) , leaves were treated very differently by beetles with and without their galeal or palpal sensilla. Galeal sensilla were particularly important for beetles interacting with these two plants. Compared with normal beetles, fewer beetles without galeae fed on potato leaves, and those that did feed spent more time assessing the plant and took more bites before feeding. On tomtato, more beetles without galeae fed, spent less time assessing the plant and took fewer bites before feeding. Beetles without galeae also had lower consumption rates on potato and higher consumption rates on tomato. Beetles were very reluctant to feed on tomato if the galeae were present so removal of maxillary sensilla was studied only on potato. Without the sensilla on the maxillary palpi only the time between first touch and first bite was affected (lengthened). The importance of galeal sensilla in host recognition by this species and the implications for chemosensory studies are discussed here and in a companion paper.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to provide a morphological foundation for electrophysiological studies on the sensilla of D. ponderosae. The sensilla on the antennae, labial and maxillary palps, galeae and fore-tarsi are described. The antennal club has several types of sensilla: (1) multiporous non-socketed pegs of varying lengths innervated by 2 neurons, (2) uniporous socketed pegs innervated by 5 neurons, (3) pegs innervated by only 1 neuron at the base, (4) tapered uniporous cones innervated by 4 neurons, and (5) fluted multiporous, non-socketed cones innervated by 4 neurons. All hairs on the fore-tarsi are innervated by 1 neuron at the base. The labial and maxillary palp-tips have: (1) digitiform organs, (2) campaniform organs, (3) uniporous, socketed pegs innervated by 5 neurons, and (4) non-porous pegs innervated by 3 neurons. Two small, uniporous, socketed pegs innervated by 4 neurons, are set into the maxillary palp-tip sidewall, and a single, sharp-tipped peg, innervated by 1 neuron, is found on the tip. These 2 types are not seen on the labial palps. The ultrastructure of each type of sensillum found on both the maxillary and labial palps is similar; however, the number of uniporous and non-porous pegs on the labial palps is about half those of the maxilla. The maxillary galeae each have 3 types of sensilla: (1) numerous pegs of various sizes innervated by 1 neuron, (2) a single, possibly uniporous socketed peg innervated by 5 neurons, and (3) another single non-porous non-socketed peg innervated by 2 neurons.  相似文献

Non-innervated macrotrichia and microtrichia, thick-walled chemoreceptors and three kinds of thin-walled chemoreceptors are present on the antennal flagellum of Frenesia missa. One of the thin-walled receptors, the plate organ, is of a type not previously recorded for any insect. About four times as many plate organs are present on the flagellum of the male as on that of the female. They occur also on the maxillary and labial palps.  相似文献

To better understand the semiochemical detection and reception mechanisms that involved in intra- and interspecific communication, host selection and mating behavior of Echinothrips americanus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the external morphology, distribution and ultrastructure of the sensilla on antennae and mouthparts. According to serial SEM images, seven types of antennal sensilla in total were observed in both sexes. Sensilla on mouthparts were observed concentrating on the maxillary palps, labial palps, and paraglossa, which is consistent with the previous conclusions. Possible function of the external sensilla is also discussed.  相似文献

Clavigeritae is a group of obligate myrmecophiles of the rove beetle subfamily Pselaphinae (Staphylinidae). Some are blind and wingless, and all are believed to depend on ant hosts through feeding by trophallaxis. Phylogenetic hypotheses suggest that their ancestors, as are most pselaphines today, were free-living predators. Morphological alterations required to transform such beetles into extreme myrmecophiles were poorly understood. By studying the cephalic morphology of Claviger testaceus, we demonstrate that profound changes in all mouthpart components took place during this process, with a highly unusual connection of the maxillae to the hypopharynx, and formation of a uniquely transformed labium with a vestigial prementum. The primary sensory function of the modified maxillary and labial palps is reduced, and the ventral mouthparts transformed into a licking/‘sponging’ device. Many muscles have been reduced, in relation to the coleopteran groundplan or other staphylinoids. The head capsule contains voluminous glands whose appeasement secretions are crucial for the beetle survival in ant colonies. The brain, in turn, has been shifted into the neck region. The prepharyngeal dilator is composed of an entire series of bundles. However, the pharynx does not show any peculiar adaptations to taking up liquid food. We demonstrate that far-reaching cephalic modifications characterize C. testaceus, and that the development of appeasement glands and adaptation of the mouthparts to trophallaxis determine the head architecture of this extreme myrmecophile.  相似文献

The chrysomelid Acalymma vittatum is stenophagous, subsisting almost entirely on plants in the Cucurbitaceae, which generally contain cucurbitacins. Cucurbitacins are extremely bitter tetracyclic triterpenoids that are toxic to most organisms. As do other diabroticite beetles, A. vittatum sequester cucurbitacins, which have been shown to act as phagostimulants and arrestants. Our results reveal, however, that for A. vittatum the response to cucurbitacin diminishes with continued sequestration. Colony-reared A. vittatum were fed only roots (as larvae) and foliage of either `Marketmore 76' (which contains a normal amount of cucurbitacin, `bitter') or `Marketmore 80' (a near isogenic line that contains no cucurbitacin, `non-bitter') cucumber. Over 1200 individual beetles from the day of adult emergence to 15 days following emergence were placed in choice and no-choice arenas containing potted cotyledons of the two cucumber varieties for 24 h. In choice tests, overall preference for the bitter cucumber cultivar was maintained, but degree of preference changed with age and became significantly less for beetles reared on bitter diets. Furthermore, in no-choice tests, age, sex, dietary history, and interactions among these variables all significantly affected the feeding response to cucurbitacin. For A. vittatum reared without cucurbitacin, total consumption of the bitter cultivar increased over time. For beetles reared with cucurbitacin, total foliage consumption of the bitter cultivar declined, within nine days, to equal that of the non-bitter cultivar. Feral A. vittatum, unexpectedly, consumed more of the non-bitter than the bitter cultivar in no-choice tests. Ecological and applied implications of this variation in response to cucurbitacin are discussed.  相似文献

口器感器在昆虫取食活动中起着重要作用, 但蚊蝎蛉成虫口器上感器的种类和形态迄今未见报道。我们利用扫描电子显微镜, 观察了中华蚊蝎蛉Bittacus sinensis Walker成虫口器上的感器。结果显示: 中华蚊蝎蛉口器上共有8种感器, 分别为锥形、毛形、刺形、指形、掌状、钟形、柱状感器及Böhm氏鬃毛, 主要集中于内唇、 下颚须以及下唇须上。锥形感器和刺形感器数量最多; 毛形感器主要在下颚轴节、 茎节和下唇的亚颏和前颏有分布; 钟形感器和Böhm氏鬃毛只存在于下唇须和下颚须上。下颚须端节和下唇须端节的感器种类相同, 以锥形感器为主。高度骨化的上颚以及下颚内颚叶与外颚叶上未发现感器分布。简要讨论了口器感器在昆虫分类中的意义。  相似文献

The stem borer Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of maize, Zea mays L., and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (both Poaceae), in sub-Saharan Africa. Like in many other lepidopteran insects, the success of B. fusca in recognizing and colonizing a limited variety of plants is based on the interaction between its sensory systems and the physicochemical characteristics of its immediate environment. The sensilla on the maxillary galeae of B. fusca larvae are typical of Lepidoptera and comprise two uniporous styloconic sensilla, which are contact chemoreceptors, three basiconic sensilla, and two aporous sensilla chaetica. The maxillary palp is two-segmented and has eight small basiconic sensilla at the tip, which were also found to be gustatory. The antennae of B. fusca larvae are short and simple. The sensilla of the antenna are composed of two aporous sensilla chaetica, three multiporous cone-shaped basiconic sensilla, three small basiconic sensilla, and one aporous styloconic sensillum. The basiconic sensillum located on the third antennal segment displayed a contact chemoreception response. The other basiconic sensilla did not show any action potential activity in tip-recording tests. The significant and positive dose–response curve obtained for the antennal basiconic sensillum with sucrose indicated for the first time the presence of gustatory chemoreceptors on the antennae of a lepidopteran larva.  相似文献

By perfusing their branchial chambers with filtered seawater, we have developed a preparation that allows us to maintain the swimming crab Callinectes danae outside water without any major effects on its cardiac activity. This in turn allowed us to selectively stimulate chemoreceptors located in different body parts, and specifically to discriminate between the receptors located in the branchial chambers and those located in the oral region (mainly in the mouthparts, antennules and antennae). We show that a taurine solution can evoke bradycardia when applied to the oral region or to a combination of the oral region and the branchial chambers. Although the precise localization of the oral region receptors involved remains to be determined, ablation experiments show that the olfactory organs (i.e., the antennules) are not involved. Finally, we show that although stimulating the pereiopods has no effect on the animals' cardiac activity it causes the animals to move, putatively to try to grasp a piece of food, a reaction not evoked by stimulating the gills or the oral regions. Our results lend support to the idea that chemoreceptors located in different parts of the body play different functional roles in decapod crustaceans.  相似文献

Maxillary palps have been proposed as secondary olfactory organs, after the antennae, in Drosophila melanogaster. Our study tries to establish the quantitative importance of both organs as olfactory information mediators. Dose-response curves for three odorants: ethyl acetate, propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde were carried out for comparing olfaction in either complete animals or flies surgically deprived of antennae. Antennaless flies tested in our behavioral assay showed indifferent, attractant and repellent responses depending on concentration, similarly as normal flies do. However, they clearly displayed less sensitivity than normal flies. The range of concentrations they were able to perceive was correlated to antennal sensitivity approximately by a factor 110 for ethyl acetate and benzaldehyde, and between 110 and 1100 at high concentrations of propionaldehyde. A complementary experiment was performed to test changes in olfactory behavior produced by removing maxillary palps in the presence of antennae. At high concentrations of odorant, responses to ethyl acetate and propionaldehyde experienced small changes when both palps were removed. The morphology and ultrastructure of the olfactory sensilla on the antennae and maxillary palps were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their responses to five volatile compounds were measured using electroantenogram (EAG) and electropalpogram (EPG) techniques in the pumpkin fruit fly, Bactrocera depressa (Shiraki; Diptera: Tephritidae). Male and female B. depressa displayed distinct morphological types of olfactory sensilla in the antennae and maxillary palps, with predominant populations of trichoid, basiconic, and coeloconic sensilla. Basiconic sensilla, the most abundant type of olfactory sensilla in the antennae, could be further classified into two different types. In contrast, the maxillary palps exhibited predominant populations of a single type of curved basiconic sensilla. High‐resolution SEM observation revealed the presence of multiple nanoscale wall‐pores on the cuticular surface of trichoid and basiconic sensilla, indicating that their primary function is olfactory. In contrast, coeloconic sensilla displayed several longitudinal grooves around the sensillum peg. The TEM observation of individual antennal olfactory sensilla indicates that the basiconic sensilla are thin‐walled, while the trichoid sensilla are thick‐walled. The profile of EAG responses of male B. depressa was different from their EPG response profile, indicating that the olfactory function of maxillary palps is different from that of antennae in this species. The structural and functional variation in the olfactory sensilla between antennae and maxillary palps suggests that each plays an independent role in the perception of olfactory signals in B. depressa.  相似文献

利用扫描电镜对锈翅蚁蛉Myrmeleon ferrugineipennis Bao&Wang雌雄成虫头部触角及口器感器的形态进行观察,描述了感器的种类、数量和分布,以期解析其取食机制。结果表明:锈翅蚁蛉触角上存在10种感器,即毛形感器、锥形感器、刺形感器、腔形感器、钟状感器、鳃形感器、耳形感器、盘形感器、舌形感器和Bhm氏鬃毛,其中毛形感器有3种亚型,数量最多;耳形感器、腔形感器和钟状感器仅在雌成虫触角上发现,而舌形感器和鳃形感器仅在雄成虫触角上发现;在锈翅蚁蛉触角鞭节近末端扁平匙状处各有1枚盘形感器,其形状和位置在雌雄虫上有差异。鳃形感器和盘形感器在已有的昆虫感器研究中未见报道,是新发现的昆虫触角感器。下颚须、下唇须上均发现锥形感器,下唇须上的数量多于下颚须;此外,下颚须上还存在钟状感器。  相似文献

The sensilla located on the antennae and maxillary and labial palps of the larvae of 64 beetle species from 22 families were studied using electron microscopy. The larvae of beetles living in different habitats and having different trophic specializations possess a uniform structure of the sensory organs. They are composed of two groups of sensilla on the apical and subapical segments of the antennae, one apical group of sensilla on both maxillary and labial palps, and one or several digitiform sensilla on the lateral surface of the maxillary and, occasionally, labial palp. The external morphology of the sensory organs is adaptive and represents modifications of the initial type. Band-shaped sensilla or placoid sensilla, clearly different from the initial sensory organs, appear in some taxa as rare exceptions, while other groups display either partial reduction of the receptor organs (Gyrinidae) or reduction of the cuticular parts of the sensilla (Cantharidae).  相似文献
