Eighty-seven red foxes were investigated for the presence of Toxocara eggs on a sample of their hair from the peri-anal region. The worm burden of Toxocara in each fox intestine was also assessed and the relationship between eggs on the hair and worms in the intestine explored. Twenty-eight per cent of the foxes were found to have Toxocara eggs on their hair, with an average of 1.31 +/- 3.21 eggs per gram of hair (+/- SD). Sixty-one per cent of foxes harboured Toxocara worms within their intestines, with a mean worm burden (+/- SD) of 4 +/- 8. Host age and sex did not significantly influence the observed eggs on the hair or the worm burden. No significant correlation was found between the numbers of eggs on the hair and the worm burden within the intestine. These data collected from foxes are explored in the context of data from stray dogs and the possible epidemiological differences are discussed.  相似文献

When measured 56 days postinfection the length, wet weight and dry weight of Hymenolepis diminuta were all found to decrease with increasing number of cysticercoids given up to 20. The mean position of the worms in 10, 12 and 20 worm infections is significantly posterior to that of 1, 2 and 5 worm infections and the worms are attached over a wider area of the intestine. Egg production by the worms was followed up to day 56 postinfection; the number of eggs produced per worm and even per rat decreased with increasing population density. Thus the best way to get most eggs and to maintain the parasite in the laboratory is to have rats infected with only one tapeworm. Rats given 1-20 cysticercoids showed a mean recovery of 100-65%, while rats given 40-200 cysticercoids showed a mean recovery ranging from 13 to 2%. In addition to 'normal' worms, defined as worms greater than 10 mm, small, most probably destrobilated, worms were found. In the 50 and 100 cysticercoid infections, worm recoveries were, respectively, 8% 'normal', 16% small, and 2% 'normal', 5% small. From the significantly lower recovery from heavy infections it is concluded that a deleterious factor is operating during the 8 weeks after the infection.  相似文献

Six of 10 hamsters fed a single metacercarial cyst of Echinostoma caproni (single-worm infections) and 13 of 19 hamsters fed either 2 or 5 cysts (multiple-worm infections) were infected with adult echinostomes at necropsy 22 days post-infection. Considerable histopathological changes to the small intestine occurred in hamsters carrying single-worm infections. There were no differences in either mean length, width or wet weight of echinostomes in single- versus multiple-worm infections. The mean number of eggs/worm from single-worm infections (525) was significantly greater than that from multiple-worm infections (288). The average percentage of fully developed miracidia/worm from single worms (94%) was similar to that from worms in multiple infections (92-95%). Single worms of E. caproni were capable of self-fertilization and production of viable eggs. Miracidia derived from single worms were as capable of infecting laboratory-reared Biomphalaria glabrata and producing patent rediae as were those from multiple infections.  相似文献

Echinostomes are intestinal trematodes that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans, in their adult stage and also parasitize numerous invertebrate and cold-blooded vertebrate hosts in their larval stages. The purpose of this study was to compare Echinostoma malayanum parasite growth, including worm recovery, body size of adult worms, eggs per worm, eggs per gram of feces, and pathological changes in the small intestine of experimental animals. In this study, 6-8-week-old male hamsters, rats, mice, and gerbils were infected with echinostome metacercariae and then sacrificed at day 60 post-infection. The small intestine and feces of each infected animal were collected and then processed for analysis. The results showed that worm recovery, eggs per worm, and eggs per gram of feces from all infected hamsters were higher compared with infected rats and mice. However, in infected gerbils, no parasites were observed in the small intestine, and there were no parasite eggs in the feces. The volume of eggs per gram of feces and eggs per worm were related to parasite size. The results of histopathological changes in the small intestine of infected groups showed abnormal villi and goblet cells, as evidenced by short villi and an increase in the number and size of goblet cells compared with the normal control group.  相似文献

The parasitological and histopathological effects of immunosuppression in guinea-pigs (Cavia porcellus) experimentally infected with Schistosoma haematobium were studied. A total of 16 guinea-pigs were divided into four groups (four per group): non-immunosuppressed, non-infected group (NN); immunosuppressed, non-infected group (IN); immunosuppressed, infected group (II); non-immunosuppressed, infected group (NI). The IN and II groups were immunosuppressed with 5?mg/kg prednisolone while the II and NI animals were infected with 200-300 S. haematobium cercariae. Excretion of eggs in urine/faeces, worm burden and histopathology of some vital organs of the guinea-pigs were studied. Eggs of S. haematobium were observed in the urine of the NI and II groups from 9 weeks post-infection and in faeces from 10 and 13 weeks post-infection for the NI and II groups, respectively. However, II animals excreted more viable eggs in urine and faeces than those of the NI group. Worm recovery at 14 weeks post-infection showed that NI and II guinea-pigs had more female worms than male worms and a greater proportion of worm recovery for NI animals was of immature worms. Significant differences (P?0.05). Histological changes, which were notably reactions to adult S. haematobium worms, were observed in the organs of the NI and II groups but these changes were seen more in the organs of the immunosuppressed, infected (II) than in the non-immunosuppressed, infected (NI) guinea-pigs. The results suggest that immunosuppression before infection increased worm survival and had a moderate effect on liver and bladder histology of S. haematobium infected guinea-pigs.  相似文献

Twenty-one Beagle dogs consisting of 10 males and 11 females and belonging to 3 litters were infected with 60,000 E. granulosus protoscolices each. They were killed on day 40, the parasites from their intestines recovered, and the number of worms, average number of proglottides per worm, average length per worm, percentage of worms with a uterine cavity, and percentage of egg-bearing worms were determined for each dog and analyzed per sex and litter. On average, the dogs had 1,253 +/- 339 worms (means +/- standard error) with 2.42 +/- 0.1 proglottides, were 1.59 +/- 0.07 mm long, and 25.6 +/- 4.8% of the worms presented a uterine cavity and 1.2 +/- 0.6% bore eggs. The number of worms exhibited a bimodal distribution with 19 dogs having less than or equal to 2,565 worms and 2 greater than or equal to 5,520 worms. Average number of proglottides also showed a bimodal distribution with 7 dogs having less than or equal to 2.1 proglottides per worm and 14 dogs having greater than or equal to 2.4 proglottides per worm. The parasites were significantly more numerous in females than in the males (1,964 +/- 573 vs. 681 +/- 202), had more proglottides (2.67 +/- 0.08 vs. 2.15 +/- 0.16), and were longer (1.72 +/- 0.07 vs. 1.44 +/- 0.11 mm). Chicks were experimentally infected with Acanthoparyphium tyosenense (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) metacercariae per os, and the growth and development of worms in this host were observed from days I to 38 postinfection (PI). The worms grew rapidly and matured sexually in the small intestine (chiefly in the jejunum) of chicks by day 5 PI. and survived at least up to day 38 Pi, although worm recovery decreased after day 5 PI. Both parenchymal and reproductive organs increased greatly in size from day 2 to day 10 PI and then continued to increase gradually in size up to day 38 PI. The number of uterine eggs reached a peak on days 10 and 15 PI and then decreased gradually. The results suggest that chicks are a fairly suitable definitive host for experimental infection with A. tyosenense.  相似文献

Schistosoma malayensis n. sp., a member of the Schistosoma japonicum complex is described from Rattus muelleri in Peninsular Malaysia and 2 strains are characterized. The only morphological differences noted among adults from natural hosts were that S. malayensis are in general smaller than S. mekongi and S. japonicum. But these differences may be the result of host-induced variations and therefore are of little taxonomic value. To minimize the effects of host-induced variations, adult worms recovered from laboratory mice with similar worm burdens at 50-56 days postinfection were compared. These comparisons revealed only minor morphometric differences among these 3 species. Schistosoma malayensis eggs from naturally and experimentally infected hosts are most similar to those of S. mekongi, with eggs of both species being, in general, smaller than those of S. japonicum. The egg index for S. malayensis is usually higher than for S. japonicum and lower than for S. mekongi. Differences were noted in the developmental rates in mice for 2 isolates of S. malayensis, S. mekongi, and S. japonicum (Philippine strain), but relatively large differences observed between isolates of S. malayensis indicate that, in this case, the developmental rate is not a useful taxonomic character. Schistosoma malayensis is erected principally on the basis of differences, reported elsewhere, in the life histories and in the electrophoretic migration patterns of isoenzymes of adult worms as compared to S. mekongi and S. japonicum. These comparisons indicate that S. malayensis is more closely related to S. mekongi than to S. japonicum.  相似文献

Immune mesenteric lymph node cells (IMLNC) and hyperimmune serum, alone or in combination, were transferred to recipient, syngeneic Lewis rats. On the day of cell transfer, the recipients, along with appropriate controls, were infected with 1,000Strongyloides ratti larvae. Twelve days later, the number of adult worms in the anterior small intestine was counted and the number ofS. ratti eggs in the terminal uterus of representative female worms was determined. Using these methods, we showed that worm fecundity was reduced in the IMLNC recipients, the hyperimmune serum recipients, and the recipients of both cells and serum as compared with regular controls (averages of 2.45, 2.93, and 2.98 eggs, respectively, vs. 4.73 eggs). The number of adult worms recovered from the IMLNC recipients was not reduced (474.6 worms). However, significantly fewer worms were recovered from the recipients of IMLNC-hyperimmune serum and the recipients of hyperimmune serum only as compared with regular controls (184.8 and 171.5 worms, respectively, vs. 567.2 worms). A working hypothesis, involving an interaction of serum and cellular components, is postulated as the mechanism for this protective response.  相似文献

Three isolates of Trichinella spiralis (black bear: 41o50'N, 79o00'W, 1982; grey fox: 41o00'N, 76o00'W, 1982; domestic pig: 39o80'N, 75o30'W, 1983) from the mid-Atlantic United States were characterized in Crl: COBS CFW (SW) mice during 10 successive 40-day generations. Over 10 generations, the isolates differed as follows: worm position of the ursine isolate was significantly more posteriad compared to the porcine isolate; sex ratio of the vulpine isolate was significantly lower compared to the ursine and porcine isolates; females of the porcine isolate produced significantly more newborn larvae in vitro than the sylvatic isolates; both the larvae per gram (LPG) and reproductive capacity index (RCI) were significantly higher for the porcine isolate; and male worms of the vulpine isolate were significantly smaller than those of the porcine or ursine isolates. No differences were observed among isolates for percentage of inoculum recovered, length of female worms, or uterine length. The fecundity of the isolates in hamsters, gerbils, multimammate rats, Sprague-Dawley rats, and Peromyscus sp. was examined also. Based upon RCI and LPG, the porcine isolate was the most fecund in all hosts except gerbils. This higher fecundity was often manifest as increased morbidity and mortality in hosts infected with this isolate. The relationship between the virulent nature of the porcine isolate and the enhanced transmission of T. spiralis are discussed.  相似文献

Toxocara canis, an intestinal helminth of canids with zoonotic potential, was found in 618 (59%) of 1,040 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) collected from all Danish provinces (1997-2002). The prevalence and average worm burden were significantly higher for cubs than older foxes and in males than in females. A multiple logistic regression demonstrated that the prevalence was influenced significantly by sex and age of foxes in addition to location, season, and year of collection. The highest prevalence and worm burden were found in rural areas. The size and number of female worms was positively correlated to the fecal egg excretion. The length and fecundity of the worms was significantly higher in male foxes, and a general intensity dependence was suggested from a negative correlation between worm numbers and worm lengths. As compared to intestinal recovery of worms, somatic larvae were recovered from 20% of muscle samples and fecal eggs in 41% of fecal samples. The consistent finding of T. canis larvae in somatic tissues of naturally infected foxes is new.  相似文献

Single oral doses of ivermectin were given to dogs with moderate or heavy infections of Ancylostoma caninum (egg counts ranging from 7,100 to 41,700 eggs/g feces) at 100, 50, 30, or 10 micrograms/kg body weight. Each of these dosages was effective in clearing the infection completely, so that numerous worms were passed in the feces on days 1-3, but no worm was recovered from the intestinal tract at necropsy on day 4 after treatment. In contrast, an average of 178 worms per dog was recovered at necropsy from the vehicle-treated control and the untreated animals. Albendazole, a known anti-hookworm agent, even in a dose of 400 mg, eliminated only 21-65% of the worms harbored by the infected animals. No untoward reaction to ivermectin or significant pathological change was noted in the experimental animals. In vitro experiments demonstrated that ivermectin: (1) was highly detrimental to actively motile adult worms in concentrations greater than 5.60 micrograms/ml; (2) was detrimental to eggs inside the uterine tissue of female worms in dosages at or greater than 10 micrograms/kg body weight; and (3) killed infected larvae in concentrations as low as 0.0025 micrograms/ml.  相似文献

The host-parasite relationship of a 100 metacercarial cyst inoculum of Echinostoma caproni in the ICR mouse was examined. Three groups of mice, A, B and C, each with six mice per group were used and all mice were necropsied at 14 days postinfection (p.i.), at which time the worms were ovigerous. Group A consisted of uninfected controls, whereas group B received 25 cysts per mouse (low dose) and group C received 100 cysts per mouse (high dose). There was no significant difference in food consumption between any of the groups from 0 to 14 days p.i. Control mice increased their body weight by 12%, group B by 5%, and group C showed a less than 1% increase in body weight between 0 and 14 days p.i. Echinostome parasitism caused a significant increase in the diameter of the mouse gut, with the gut of group C being more significantly dilated than that of either group A or B. The average worm recovery from group B was 20 worms per host, compared to 72 worms per host from group C. The mean wet and dry weights per worm from group B were 2.4 and 0.4 mg, respectively as compared to 0.6 and 0.2 mg respectively for group C. The mean number of uterine eggs per worm from group B was 180 compared to 125 for worms from group C. Worms from group C were more widely distributed in the small intestine than those from group B. Crowding effects associated with the high dose infection were clearly demonstrated in E. caproni from ICR mice.  相似文献

In hermaphroditic helminth parasites, infrapopulation size or mating group size mostly affects some processes acting within the infrapopulation. Here, 30 natural infrapopulations (12-154 individuals) of the intestinal trematode Gyliauchen volubilis Nagaty, 1956 from the fish Siganus rivulatus consisting of newly excysted juveniles, immature and mature worms were found distributed in a well-defined fundamental niche (anterior 40% of the intestine). In small infrapopulations, all stages of the parasite were alive. In larger infrapopulations, differential mortality was only and consistently observed among newly excysted juveniles, and gradually increased to include most or all juveniles in the largest infrapopulations. Among mature worms, the mean worm length seemed unaffected by the infrapopulation size. However, the ratio mean testis size-mean ovary size, a reliable indicator of resource allocation to the male function and of opportunities for cross fertilization, significantly increased with mating group size. In small infrapopulations, all stages of the parasite were scattered along the niche, and never seen in mating pairs (possibly reproduced by self-fertilization). In larger infrapopulations, newly excysted juveniles and immature worms were scattered along the anterior two thirds of the niche, while mature worms were constantly found aggregated in its posterior third (narrow microhabitat), where some were arranged in mating pairs. The probability of mating reciprocally or unilaterally was dependent on body size. The mean number of uterine eggs per worm significantly decreased and their mean sizes significantly increased with mating group size. The results are statistically significant and suggest that infrapopulation self-regulation is greatly associated with its size.  相似文献

Background

Stool examination by counting eggs per gram of feces (EPGs) is the best method to estimate worm burden of Clonorchis sinensis in infected humans. The present study investigated a correlation between EPGs and worm burden in human clonorchiasis.

Methods and Findings

A total of 60 residents, 50 egg-positive and 10 egg-negative, in Sancheong-gun, Korea, participated in this worm collection trial in 2006–2009. They were diagnosed by egg positivity in feces using the Kato-Katz method. After administration of praziquantel, they were purged with cathartics on the next day, and then discharged adult worms were collected from their feces. Their EPGs ranged from 0 to 65,544. Adult worms of C. sinensis were collected from 17 egg-positive cases, and the number of worms ranged from 1 to 114 in each individual. A positive correlation between EPGs and numbers of worms was demonstrated (r = 0.681, P<0.001). Worm recovery rates were 9.7% in cases of EPGs 1–1,000 and 73.7% in those of EPGs over 1,000. No worms were detected from egg-negative subjects. Maximum egg count per worm per day was roughly estimated 3,770 in a subject with EPGs 2,664 and 106 collected worms.

Conclusions

The numbers of the worms are significantly correlated with the egg counts in human clonorchiasis. It is estimated that at least 110 worms are infected in a human body with EPGs around 3,000, and egg productivity of a worm per day is around 4,000.  相似文献

Young adults of Echinostoma trivolvis and E. paraensei were recovered from hamsters previously infected with metacercarial cysts. Some worms of each species were exposed for 1 h to 3-H-tyrosine to label sperm and transplanted singly to uninfected hamsters with several unlabelled worms of the same or opposite species or both species. After 5 days, recovered worms were processed for paraffin sectioning and autoradiography. The resulting slides were observed for the location of radioactive sperm in the seminal receptacles of donor (labelled) and recipient (unlabelled) worms. When E. trivolvis was the donor with the recipient E. paraensei, self-insemination took place, but only one interspecies mating occurred out of 72 possible recipient worms. When E. paraensei served as the donor, self-insemination again occurred, but no cross-insemination was observed among the 59 E. trivolvis recipient worms. When single donor worms had a choice of either species of recipient worms, no interspecies mating took place, but both self- and cross-insemination occurred in the normal, unrestricted behaviour found in single species mating studies. Rates of both self- and cross-insemination were higher in concurrent infections of both recipient species than in single species mating studies. After transplant, both species localized in their natural habitat within the small intestine, with 1/3 overlapping in the duodenum, making interspecies mating a possibility. The correlation between mating and electrophoretic studies on the genetic relationship between 37-collar-spined echinostomes is discussed.  相似文献

Excysted metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni were cultivated on the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) maintained at 38.5 +/- 1 C and a relative humidity of 60-65%. Of 59 6-day-old embryos, each inoculated with 25 metacercariae, 29 (49.2%) were infected 2-12 days postinoculation. The total number of worms recovered from the infected eggs was 163 or 22.5% of the 725 inoculated metacercariae. Eggs contained from 1 to 12 (average 5.6) worms per CAM. Worm length increased rapidly from an average of 0.5 mm at 2 days to about 3.0 mm at 6 days postinoculation. Ovigerous worms first were seen on day 8 PI, but fluke eggs did not develop embryos. Worm development in ovo lagged about 1 day behind that of in vivo worms. One worm maintained for 17 days on 2 successive CAMs reached 6 mm in length, contained about 100 eggs in its uterus, and laid an additional 100 eggs on the CAM surface.  相似文献

Five sheep were exposed to 5,000 S. mansoni cercariae percutaneously and the stools examined for 20 wk to determine patency. The sheep were found to be partially susceptible to a primary infection and showed great individual variations in their pathophysiological responses. All of the sheep acquired a patent infection with S. mansoni and eggs were first seen in feces 9 wk postexposure with no eggs detected after 14 wk. At necropsy 20 wk postexposure only dead S. mansoni worms were found. KOH digests revealed that tissue egg counts were low, ranging from 0 to 133 in the liver, and 0 to 257 in the intestine. Primary infection of sheep with S. mansoni followed by oral infection with F. hepatica metacercariae 10 wk later resulted in a reduction of 51% in F. hepatica worms recovered over controls infected with F. hepatica for 10 wk. All 5 of the S. mansoni-infected/F. hepatica-challenged sheep developed 71 or less F. hepatica worms. In contrast, 3 of the 5 F. hepatica-infected sheep developed 113-197 worms. However, although the experimental mean worm burden was lower than the control group, the variability in the control group was too great to obtain significance between the groups. There was a clear tendency toward normocytic normochromic anemia following a primary infection with S. mansoni; however, blood values were more reduced in the F. hepatica challenge controls than in the animals that received primary infection with S. mansoni.  相似文献
