Increased physical exercise is known to prevent leg problems in meat-type chickens. Our aims were to study in detail the organisation of general and locomotor activity, to determine how physical exercise could be promoted and to investigate the effects of tonic immobility (TI) duration on spontaneous activity. Chicks were allocated to two groups according to their TI duration at 3 and 20 days (fearful birds, HF, n=11; non-fearful birds, LF, n=14). The behaviour patterns expressed by awake birds were recorded as 'activity bouts'. Activity bouts were then classified into five classes according to the most long-lasting activity in the bout. The behaviour patterns were similar in both groups. The FORAGING class contained long-lasting bouts with high levels of locomotor activity which decreased considerably with age, when bouts of EATING and DRINKING classes became more and more numerous. Bouts in the PREENING and NONE classes contained low activity. In conclusion, the level of activity in home pens was poorly related to TI. Categorisation of bouts into five classes is valuable to understand the general organisation of activity in chickens. The FORAGING class included bouts with high levels of locomotion and it could thus be used as a general indicator of activity.  相似文献

From ~35 days of age fast growing meat chickens spend extended periods sitting or lying and less time standing. In a fast-feathering parent line lower early incubation temperatures which delayed chick hatch time, improved bone ash and extended their standing time. This incubation study assessed the consequences of incubation temperatures, hatch time and chick management at hatch/take off on femoral bone ash (BA) in Cobb 500 meat chickens. Embryos were incubated under either Control (between 37.8°C and 38.2°C egg shell temperature (EST)) or a Slow start (from 37.2°C at sett (the start of incubation), reaching 37.8°C EST at day 13 incubation), temperatures. Hatched chicks were identified at 492 h (20.5 days of incubation – classified as early (E)) or, between >492 and ⩽516 h (>20.5 and ⩽21.5 days of incubation – classified as late (L)), from setting. The E hatch chicks were allocated across three post-hatch treatments; treatment 1: E hatch chicks that were sampled E at 492 h from setting; treatment 2: E hatch chicks that were fed for a further 24 h in a floorpen before being sampled L at 516 h from setting; treatment 3: E hatch chicks that spent a further 24 h in the incubator before being sampled L at 516 h from setting. All L hatch chicks formed one treatment group which was sampled L at 516 h (i.e. L hatch chicks sampled L). It is not possible to sample L hatching chicks E hence this treatment is absent from the experimental design. Slow start incubation resulted in a higher total hatch percentage with a greater proportion of chicks hatching L, compared with the Control incubation. The L hatching chicks had significantly higher BA than the E hatching chicks. Of the E hatching chicks, those sampled both E and L had significantly lower BA than E hatching chicks fed for 24 h before L sampling. The E hatch, fed and sampled L chicks had the numerically highest BA, which was not significantly different from the BA of the L hatching chicks sampled L These results demonstrate that BA at hatch can be improved, either by extending the incubation period through a Slow start incubation profile, inducing L hatch, or alternatively, via the prompt provision of feed to E hatching chicks.  相似文献

Sublines of chickens differing in genotypes at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were developed from lines selected for high (HA) and low (LA) antibody response to sheep erythrocytes. To evaluate the influence of MHC genotypes in diverse background genomes on resistance to Marek's disease, chicks with MHC genotypes B13B13, B13B21 and B21B21 from both background genomes were exposed naturally commencing at 1 day of age. Individuals which died up to 120 days of age were autopsied to determine cause of death. Mortality due to Marek's disease was greater for HA than LA chickens and greater for males than females. Interactions of MHC genotypes with background genome and with sex suggest a complex picture of the influence of MHC genotypes. A heterozygous advantage for resistance to Marek's disease was noted, as would be predicted by genetic theory concerning maintenance of polymorphism at the MHC.  相似文献

Ontogeny of hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) content and of quinine 3-hydroxylation, a biomarker of human CYP3A activity, was investigated in Adélie Penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) by comparing liver microsomes from chicks aged 13-28 days (n=10) with those from adults. The total CYP content in chick microsomes was significantly lower than in adults and correlated with the age of the chicks (r=0.894, P<0.001). Kinetic parameters (mean+/-S.D.) for quinine 3-hydroxylation in chick microsomes were lower than the corresponding values in adult penguins (Km, 122+/-27 vs. 160+/-73 microM; Vmax, 119+/-35 vs. 160+/-72 pmol/min/mg protein) but the differences were not significant, and neither Km nor Vmax correlated with age of the chicks. The pattern of inhibition of quinine 3-hydroxylation by specific human CYP inhibitors suggests that the CYP enzyme mediating quinine 3-hydroxylation in penguin chicks is similar to human CYP3A, but is a different isoform from that in adult penguins. The results imply that Adélie Penguin chicks may have a different susceptibility to environmental pollutants from adult penguins.  相似文献

We examined atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA expression in the smooth muscle of gizzards from egg- and meat-type chickens. Gizzard weight relative to body weight was significantly lower in the meat-type chickens than in the egg-type at 14 d of age. In contrast, the level of atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA in the gizzard was significantly higher in the meat-type chickens than in the egg-type chickens. Thus atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA expression in the smooth muscle of the gizzard was higher in meat-type chickens than in egg-type chickens, in contrast to its expression in the skeletal muscles.  相似文献

The present study compared the plasma corticosterone concentrations between meat- and layer-type neonatal chicks (Gallus gallus) (1) exposed to isolation-induced stress or (2) injected intracerebroventricularly (ICV) with corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). Both types of neonatal chicks housed in groups were individually introduced to an open field arena and locomotion and distress-induced vocalizations were monitored for 10 min. The responses of the two strains were remarkably different, with meat-type chicks being less active than layer-type chicks. Distress-induced vocalizations were drastically decreased over time in meat-type chicks while they remained high in layer-type chicks throughout the test. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured at the end of the test were significantly higher in layer-type chicks than in meat-type ones. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured 10 min after the ICV injection of CRF were significantly higher in layer- than meat-type chicks. These results indicate that meat-type chicks have either a greater capability to acclimatize to novel environments, or a blunted HPA axis compared with layer-type chicks.  相似文献

Lower egg shell temperatures (EST) during the first 2 weeks of incubation, notionally known as Slow start incubation, extended the standing time of a 5-week-old fast feathering meat chicken parent line. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Slow start incubation on the standing ability of commercial meat chickens. Eggs from two strains of meat chickens, Strains 1 and 2, were incubated using either the Slow start incubation, (the initial EST was 36.75°C followed by a gradual increase in EST, reaching 37.8°C at day 16 of incubation), or Control incubation (EST 37.75°C to 38°C from the start of incubation until day 18 of incubation). Eggs were observed every 6 h from 468 h until 516 h of incubation to identify chick hatch window. At 516 h of incubation all chicks were taken out of the incubator (take-off). Chicks from each Strain and incubation treatment were randomly selected for assessment of chick weight, chick length, yolk sac weight, serum Ca and P, and femoral bone ash (BA). All unhatched eggs were inspected to determine the stage of embryo failure. Remaining chicks were grown for 5 weeks in floorpens. Weekly feed intake (FI), chick weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined. At 35 days of age the standing ability of visibly male birds was assessed in a latency-to-lie test. Compared to the Control, Slow start incubation delayed the average hatch time of both strains by ∼13 h, and reduced hatchability with 4.6% live but unhatched chicks, which was most evident in Strain 2. Significant differences due to main effects only were observed at take-off. Strain 1 chicks were significantly heavier and longer with higher serum Ca but significantly lower BA and serum P than Strain 2. Slow start incubation generated significantly heavier chicks that were shorter, but had significantly heavier yolk sacs, lower serum Ca but higher serum P than Control incubated chicks. During the 1st week post hatch Strain 1 Control incubated chicks had significantly higher FI and higher FCR than all other Strain and incubation treatments. At 35 days of age Slow start incubated birds of both Strains stood significantly longer than those from the Control incubation. This experiment clearly demonstrated the ability of Slow start incubation of commercial meat chickens to improve their leg strength.  相似文献

This study was designed to examine the alloantigen system L effects on Rous sarcomas in three B complex genotypes. The parental stock was 50% Modified Wisconsin Line 3 x White Leghorn Line NIU 4 and 50% inbred Line 6.15-5. Pedigree matings of two B(2)B(5) L(1)L(2) sires to five B(2)B(5) L(1)L(2) dams per sire produced experimental chicks segregating for B and L genotypes. Chicks were inoculated with 20 pock-forming units (pfu) of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) at 6 weeks of age. Tumors were scored six times over 10 weeks postinoculation after which the tumor scores were used to assign a tumor profile index (TPI) to each chicken. Tumor growth over time and TPI were evaluated by repeated-measures analysis of variance and analysis of variance, respectively. Six trials were conducted with a total of 151 chickens. The major histocompatibility (B) complex affected the responses as the B(2)B(2) and B(2)B(5) genotypes had significantly lower tumor growth over time and TPI than the B(5)B(5) genotype. Separate analyses revealed no significant L system effect in B(2)B(2) or B(2)B(5) backgrounds. However, L genotype significantly affected (P < 0.05) both tumor growth over time and TPI in B(5)B(5) chickens. B(5)B(5) L(1)L(2) birds had TPI significantly lower than B(5)B(5) L(1)L(1) chickens but not B(5)B(5) L(2)L(2). Mortality was lower in the B(5)B(5) L(1)L(2) birds than in B(5)B(5) L(2)L(2) chickens. The L system, or one closely linked, affects the growth and ultimate outcome of Rous sarcomas. The response may depend upon the genetic background as well as MHC type.  相似文献

An exogenous avian leukosis virus (ALV) strain SDAU09C1 was isolated in DF-1 cells from one of 240 imported 1-day-old white meat-type grand parent breeder chicks. Inoculation of SDAU09C1 in ALV-free chickens induced antibody reactions specific to subgroup A or B. But gp85 amino acid sequence comparisons indicated that SDAU09C1 fell into subgroup A; it had homology of 88.8%-90.3% to 6 reference strains of subgroup A, much higher compared to other subgroups including subgroup B. A genetic role of isozyme types in plasma alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity within dam families in the young chicken was investigated in a White Plymouth Rock strain kept in our laboratory since 1961. Plasma samples were obtained at 32 and 56 days of age and subjected to horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and two methods of analysis. A higher level of plasma AP activity of the fast (F) type relative to that of slow (S) type was re-confirmed. The F types of full-sib chicks had distinctly higher AP activity than the S types. Also within isozyme types, family differences were significant in the F type but not in the S type. The correlation of AP activities between 32 and 56 days of age was significant in the F type but not in the S type, which could be attributed to the effect of aging. Autism is a behaviorally defined disorder of unknown etiology that is thought to be influenced by genetic and environmental factors. High levels of homocysteine and oxidative stress are generally associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. The purpose of this study was to compare the level of homocysteine and other biomarkers in children with autism to corresponding values in age-matched healthy children. We measured total homocysteine (tHcy), vitamin B(12), paraoxonase and arylesterase activities of human paraoxonase 1 (PON1) in plasma and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in erythrocytes from 21 children: 12 with autism (age: 8.29 +/- 2.76 years) and 9 controls (age: 8.33 +/- 1.82 years). We found statistically significant differences in tHcy levels and in arylesterase activity of PON1 in children with autism compared to the control group: 9.83 +/- 2.75 vs. 7.51 +/- 0.93 micromol/L (P < or =0.01) and 72.57 +/- 11.73 vs. 81.83 +/- 7.39 kU/L (P < or =0.005). In the autistic group there was a strong negative correlation between tHcy and GPx activity and the vitamin B(12) level was low or suboptimal. In conclusion, our study shows that in children with autism there are higher levels of tHcy, which is negatively correlated with GPx activity, low PON1 arylesterase activity and suboptimal levels of vitamin B(12).  相似文献

The behaviour of six replicates of broilers obtained from commercial farms, fed ad-libitum and housed on 23-h light:1-h dark schedule at 20 lx was observed using scan sampling. Comparisons were made between sound birds and those of varying degrees of lameness between 39 and 49 days of age. Sound broilers averaged 76% of their time lying and this increased significantly to 86% in lame birds (gait score 3). Lying also increased with age. Although sound broilers spent only a minor part of the day on their feet, they spent significantly more time standing idle (7%), standing preening (3.5%) and standing eating (4.7%) than lame birds. Walking declined with age, but occupied an average 3.3% of the time of a slaughter-weight broiler. Again, lameness significantly reduced this to a minimal 1.5% in the worst affected birds. Sound birds predominantly chose the usual standing posture for eating, whereas, lame birds lay down to eat for almost half their feeding time. Detailed observations using video records revealed that lameness altered the feeding strategy of broilers. Whereas sound birds fed over 50 times in 24 h, the number of visits to the feeder was reduced with increasing lameness to an average of around 30 in the lamest broilers. However, meal duration was adjusted to give no overall differences in time spent feeding per day. Time spent drinking was also the same for all birds, averaging 3% of the day. The alterations of the time budget, in particular the reductions in activities performed whilst standing, and the different feeding strategies adopted, are consistent with lameness imposing a cost on the affected broilers to the detriment of their welfare.  相似文献

The starting material were 86 day-old utility hybrid Tetra SL chicks. Beginning from their third week of life, 59 chickens were kept in two separate rooms "A" and "B" for 42-56 days. The values of temperature and cooling were somewhat different in rooms "A" and "B", however essentially not deviating from the accepted zoohygienic norms. The obtained results revealed a significant reduction of the activity of acid phosphatase in blood lymphocytes of 8-10 week-old chickens bursectomized in the neonatal period and kept in room "A". No such changes were found concerning ATP-ase and 5'-nucleotidase. Similar effect appeared in the lymphocytes of non-bursectomized chickens kept in room "B". Antigen stimulation (SRBC) of bursectomized and non-bursectomized chickens brought about an increased activity of all the three enzymes in blood lymphocytes. At the same time it should be emphasized that the increased activity of the enzymes tested was modulated by bursectomy and conditions of the medium.  相似文献

Various levels of dilauryl succinate with or without additional d-α-tocopheryl acetate and of diethyl succinate were fed to chicks for 4 weeks to examine the interrelationship between the esters and nutritional encephalomalacia.

Chicks fed dilauryl succinate at the level higher than 3% died with lesions in the cerebellum. The lesions were prevented by the supplementation of 25 mg or more of d-α-tocopheryl acetate per kg of diet. Median lethal dietary level for males of meat-type and egg-type chicks at 3 weeks of age was 6.3 and 6.0%, respectively. That for females of meat-type at 3 weeks of age was 9.0%, suggesting that males were more sensitive than females. Diethyl succinate did not induce encephalomalacia.  相似文献

The physiological mechanisms of thermogenesis, energy balance and energy expenditure are poorly understood in poultry. The aim of this study was designed to investigate the physiological roles of avian uncoupling protein (avUCP) regulating in energy balance and thermogenesis by using three chicken breeds of existence striking genetic difference and feeding with different dietary protein levels. Three chicken breeds including broilers, hybrid chickens, and non-selection Wuding chickens were used in this study. Total 150 chicks of 1 day of age, with 50 from each breed were reared under standard conditions on starter diets to 30 days. At 30 days of age, forty chicks from each breed chicks were divided into two groups. One group was fed low protein diet (LP, 17.0 %), and the other group was fed high protein diet (HP, 19.5 %) for 60 days. Wuding chickens showed the lowest feed conversion efficiency (FCE) and the highest expressions of avUCP mRNA association with high plasma T3 and insulin concentrations. Hybrid chickens showed the lowest expressions of avUCP mRNA association with high FCE and energy efficiency. Expressions of avUCP mRNA association with diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) were only observed in broiler and hybrid chickens. The expressions of avUCP mRNA were positive association with plasma insulin, T3 and NEFA concentrations. Age influence on the expression of avUCP mRNA were observed only for hybrid and broiler chickens. It seems that both roles of avUCP regulation thermogenesis and lipid utilisation as fuel were observed in the present study response to variation in dietary protein and breeds.  相似文献

MSG (4 mg/g BW) or the equivalent molar ratio of NaCl were injected subcutaneously into chicks from four populations of chickens derived from a double selection experiment [(1) low exponential growth rate (EGR) to 14 days of age (14L), (2) high EGR to 14 days of age (14H), (3) low EGR to 42 days of age (42L) and high EGR to 42 days of age (42H)]. MSG significantly influenced growth in chickens, but the absolute effect was genotype and sex dependent. Weights of abdominal fat pads were ranked among lines according to the sequence 42H, 14H, 42L and 14L. MSG significantly increased fat pad size by 51%, independent of genotype or sex. MSG significantly decreased breast weight in females and males by 7%. The higher percent fat pads and lower breast weights associated with MSG are indicative of growth due to fat accretion rather than protein deposition.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate puberty attainment in crossbred Landrace x Yorkshire (LY) gilts reared under tropical conditions and their subsequent reproductive performance. This study was carried out in a 2400-sow herd over a 1-year period. A total of 696 crossbred LY replacement gilts were included. Faecal samples from 214 gilts were collected to determine the faecal progesterone profiles around the time of first oestrus. Solid-phase 125I-radioimmunoassay was used to determine the progesterone concentrations in the faecal extract. The gilts entered the herd at an average age of 177.5 +/- 12.6 days, 95.7 +/- 10.2 kg body weight (BW) and a backfat thickness (BF) of 12.0 +/- 2.9 mm. On average, the gilts expressed first standing oestrus at 195 days of age, 106 kg of BW and a BF of 13.0 mm. The interval from entry to the gilt pool to the first observed oestrus (EOI) was 24.4 +/- 18.0 days (range 0-88 days). The hormonal profile indicated that the gilts that actually ovulated during the first observed oestrus was 34% (group A), the gilts that had ovulated before the first observed oestrus was 21% (group B) and the gilts that did not ovulate during the first observed oestrus was 45% (group C). During summer the proportion of group A gilts was significantly lower than during the winter and the rainy seasons (P < 0.05). The BW of gilts at entry significantly correlated with the BF at entry (r = 0.31, P < 0.001), the age at entry (r = 0.47, P < 0.001), the BW at first oestrus (r = 0.65, P < 0.001) and the BF at first oestrus (r = 0.33, P < 0.001). An increase of BW at entry of 1 kg resulted in a decrease of EOI of 0.28 days. The age, BW and BF of gilts at the first observed oestrus significantly influenced the total number of piglets born per litter (TB) and the number of piglets born alive per litter (BA) in the first three parities. Gilts expressing their first oestrus between 181 and 200 days had a significantly larger TB than gilts that expressed first oestrus between 150 and 180 days (P = 0.03) and between 201 and 220 days (P = 0.003). Gilts that showed first oestrus between 110.1 and 120.0 kg had a larger TB and BA than gilts that showed first oestrus between 80.0 and 100.0 kg (P < 0.05). Gilts that showed first oestrus with a BF between 13.1 and 15.0 mm had a larger TB and BA than gilts that showed first oestrus with a BF between 11.1 and 13.0 mm (P < 0.05). Group A gilts had a significantly larger TB than group B (10.5 piglets/L versus 9.4 piglets/L, P = 0.02), while farrowing rate (FR) did not differ significantly among groups A, B and C (78.1, 76.9 and 77.6%, respectively). Gilts that farrowed in the summer had a larger TB and BA than gilts that farrowed in the winter (TB, P = 0.03; BA, P = 0.09) and the rainy season (TB, P = 0.006; BA, P = 0.003). In conclusion, LY gilts reared under tropical conditions expressed first standing oestrus at 195 days of age, 106 kg BW and a BF of 13.0 mm. Under field conditions, 21% of the gilts with an observed oestrus had ovulated. The proportion of gilts that showed first oestrus and ovulated normally was lowest during the summer. The age, BW and BF at first observed oestrus influenced subsequent reproductive performance over the first three parities. The mean litter size (TB and BA) in the first three parities were highest in gilts that had a first observed oestrus between 181 and 200 days with 110.1-120.0 kg BW and 13.1-15.0 mm BF.  相似文献

Lameness, a common disease in crossbred dairy cows, badly affects their fertility. To elucidate, if estrous behavior, comprising of duration and expression of certain estrous behavioral sign(s) (EBS), is involved, an estrous expression score system was applied to objectively compare estrous behavior during 27 and 58 estrous periods, respectively, in 17 normal and 37 lame cows kept in a group of 200 cows under loose housing system in tropical India. The cows were detected in estrus and were closely watched daily for 30 min at 0630, 1030, 1430 and 1830 h from the beginning to the end of estrus. The duration of estrus was similar in the normal and the lame cows (18.7+/-1.2 h versus 17.2+/-0.9 h) and almost similar EBS were shown by two types of cows, albeit with varying frequency. Standing to be mounted, the highest ranking EBS was shown by equal proportions of the cows in both the groups (76.4% versus 73.0%). A lower proportion of lame cows showed head side mounting (35% versus 53%; P<0.05). The frequency of standing to be mounted events was lower in the lame than in the normal cows (2.4+/-0.4 versus 8.0+/-2.5; P<0.05). The lame cows earned non-significantly lower than normal estrous behavior score (1100+/-179 versus 1610+/-357). Further, the presence of more than one cow simultaneously in estrus enhanced the estrous behavior score in the normal (406.4+/-63.0 for one cow in estrus versus 793.0+/-146.0 for three cows simultaneously in estrus; P<0.05), but not in the lame cows. Lameness appeared to have suppressed the playful behavior during estrus probably owing to pain related stress. It is concluded that mildly lame cows appear to have normal physiological estrus. However, some of the EBS remain subdued which prone them to remain undetected for timely breeding.  相似文献
