Laboratory rabbits are commonly used for ocular drug and device studies. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of spontaneous ocular lesions in laboratory rabbits with respect to sex, breed, and supplier. We retrospectively evaluated ophthalmic examination records of rabbits screened between April 2008 and April 2010. These 1840 records represented 572 black Dutch belted (DB), 1022 New Zealand white (NZW), and 246 NZW × New Zealand red F(1) crosses (WRF1). Rabbits were between 6 and 16 wk of age and had been received from 5 suppliers. Ocular structures evaluated were the cornea, lens, iris and vitreous with respect to sex, breed and supplier. A total of 177 rabbits (9.6%) and 233 eyes (6.3%) were effected. Of total rabbits, 15.3% males and 7.3% females were affected. The most common structure affected was the cornea in 5.7% of rabbits, (DB 11.7%, NZW 3.0%, and NZR 3.3%). The lens at 3.6% was second most common (DB 2.1%, NZW 4.6%, and NZR 3.3%). Both iris (0.2%) and vitreous (0.3%) were not significantly affected. Significant sex-breeder-supplier combinations were: cornea DB supplier D, supplier D females, supplier D males, DB males and NZR females; and lens: NZW females; and at least one affected ocular structure: NZW supplier D, supplier D females, DB males, NZW females, and NZR females. Breed, sex, and supplier were significant variables of ocular lesions in laboratory rabbits. Investigators should consider each of these variables when choosing rabbits for ocular studies.  相似文献

Kinetics of radiolabeled neutrophils in swine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The kinetics of radiolabeled neutrophils (PMNs) as they pass through the lungs of swine were evaluated and compared with those in rabbits (J. Appl. Physiol. 63: 1806-1815, 1987) and dogs (J. Appl. Physiol. 63: 1253-1261, 1987; 65: 1217-1225, 1988) previously reported from our laboratory. 111In-labeled PMNs (111In-PMNs) and 99mTc-labeled erythrocytes were simultaneously injected into the right atrium, and the 111In-PMN percent extraction on the first passage through the lung was determined by the indicator-dilution technique. After 10 min of circulation the distribution of 111In-PMNs in selected organs was determined. The extraction of 111In-PMNs in swine was 88 +/- 3%, which was significantly greater than that of rabbits (78 +/- 3%) or dogs (72 +/- 2%). The recovery of the 111In-PMNs in the lungs of swine was 60 +/- 7%, which was two to three times higher than the recovery in lungs of rabbits or dogs. These results show that radiolabeled PMNs injected intravenously are less able to pass through the pulmonary vasculature and are retained much more within the lung in swine than in rabbits or dogs. This difference could be the result of the presence of pulmonary intravascular macrophages in the lungs of swine.  相似文献

A serologic survey for the agents of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) (Rickettsia rickettsii), Borrelia spp. including the causative agent for Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), and plague (Yersinia pestis) was conducted on blood samples collected from 30 and 46 black-tailed jack rabbits (Lepus californicus) from an urban environment in Lubbock, Texas (USA) during winter 1987 and the following spring 1988, respectively. Antibody titers to the agents of RMSF and borreliosis were detected in sera of 28 and 1% of the jack rabbits, respectively. Neither organisms (rickettsiae and/or spirochetes) nor their associated antigens were detected in any of the tissue or whole blood samples; plague antibodies were not detected in the 76 jack rabbits sampled. Four of 18 ticks (Dermacentor parumapertus) removed from 12 jack rabbits were positive for RMSF using the fluorescent antibody test. The black-tailed jack rabbit is a common wildlife species living in close proximity to higher density human populations in many areas of the southwestern United States. Our results indicate the potential importance of urban populations of this mammal as reservoirs for at least one important zoonotic disease, RMSF, in western Texas.  相似文献

The influence of five brush management treatments using the herbicides tebuthiuron and triclopyr, with or without prescribed burning, on the intestinal helminth community of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) was studied in 1987 on the Cross Timbers Experimental Range in Payne County, Oklahoma (USA). Six helminth species were found (Dermatoxys veligera, Trichostrongylus calcaratus, Passalurus nonanulatus, Wellcomia longejector, Taenia pisiformis cystercercus, and Mosgovoyia pectinata americana) in 102 rabbits (88 adult and 14 juveniles) collected over two seasons (winter and summer). Prevalence of M. pectinata americana in cottontail rabbits was significantly greater in untreated control pastures than herbicide treated pastures in winter, while prevalence of T. pisiformis was significantly greater in burned than unburned pastures. Abundances of helminth species in the intestinal tract of cottontail rabbits were unaffected by brush treatments. Mosgovoyia pectinata americana abundance demonstrated a highly significant increase from winter to summer; conversely, abundance of all oxyurid pinworms combined (D. veligera, P. nonanulatus, W. longejector) was significantly higher in winter than summer. Helminth community dynamics were significantly influenced by season, but were unaffected by brush treatments. Habitat modification could have influenced cestode transmission by altering the ecology of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts.  相似文献

The study of pastures, pests (rabbits and caterpillars) and sheep productivity by Barlow (1987; New Zeal J Ecol 10: 43–55) is reviewed, updated and extended. Pasture growth was modelled as a dynamic process, though sheep and rabbit abundance were not dynamic. The model predicted that there was a parabolic relationship between sheep productivity and sheep stocking rate with the effects of rabbits being to shift the relationship lower and to the left. The relationship is analogous to a model of sustained harvest of a wild population, and the shape parameter of each has similar numerical values (2 to 3). The Barlow model also predicted a negative relationship between sheep productivity and rabbit abundance, with the relationship being curved with fixed stocking rates. Analysis of data from an independent experimental study shows more support for a negative quadratic (concave down, R2 = 0.509) than a negative linear (R2 = 0.416, ΔAICc = 2.770) relationship. The Barlow (1987) study assumed a positive linear relationship between the area of denuded pasture and pest abundance. A model selection analysis of a priori models of disturbance by feral pigs provides support for a positive curved relationship (R2 = 0.854) and a positive linear relationship (R2 = 0.357; ΔAICc = 0.03) between the area of denuded pasture (as disturbed ground) and pig abundance. We injected rabbits and guinea pigs with bovine thyrotropin (TSH) daily for 3 days, while controls received saline. All animals received sodium [125I]iodide on the second day, and thyroglobulin was purified from the thyroids of each group by gel filtration. Hormonogenic tryptic peptides from each S-cyanoethylated thyroglobulin preparation were isolated by high performance liquid chromatography, and their amino acid sequences were determined, permitting their localization within the thyroglobulin polypeptide chain by comparison with cDNA-derived sequences from bovine and human thyroglobulins. Thyroglobulins from the saline-injected rabbits and guinea pigs contained the same four major hormonogenic sites, designated A-D, previously described (Dunn, J. T., Anderson, P. C., Fox, J. W., Fassler, C. A., Dunn, A. D., Hite, L. A., and Moore, R. C. (1987) J. Biol. Chem. 262, 16948-16952). In both species, sites A and C were the major loci for thyroxine and triiodothyronine, respectively. However, site D in the guinea pig had a greater ratio of [125I]thyroxine to [127I]thyroxine than did site A, whereas the reverse was true in the rabbit. TSH administration produced the following changes in thyroglobulins of both species, relative to controls: 1) an increase in the ratio of [125I]triiodothyronine to [125I] thyroxine (rabbit, 0.29 versus 0.17; guinea pig, 0.19 versus 0.08), with the increase in triiodothyronine principally at site C; 2) a marked increase in 125I/127I and in thyroxine formation at site D (14.1% of thyroglobulin's thyroxine versus 9.8% in rabbits, 24 versus 13% in guinea pigs); 3) a corresponding decrease in thyroxine formation at site A (33 versus 43% in rabbits, 30 versus 46% in guinea pigs); and 4) a sharp increase in conversion of thyroglobulin's N-terminal 125I-labeled approximately 20 kDa hormone-rich iodopeptide, which contains site A, to a 125I-labeled approximately 15-kDa (rabbit) or 125I-labeled approximately 13-kDa (guinea pig) form, reflecting probable peptide bond cleavage. Our results show that TSH alters both the structure of the thyroglobulin molecule and the priority of utilization of its hormonogenic sites. We conclude that these changes are important to TSH's enhancement of thyroid hormone synthesis.  相似文献

Alveolar hyperoxic injury in rabbits receiving exogenous surfactant   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We have previously demonstrated that instillation of a calf lung surfactant extract (CLSE) in rabbits after exposure to 100% O2 for 64 h mitigates the progression of lung pathology after return to room air (J. Appl. Physiol. 62: 756-761, 1987). In the present study, we investigated whether we could prevent or reduce the onset and development of hyperoxic lung injury by sequential instillations of CLSE during the hyperoxic exposure. Rabbits were exposed to 100% O2. CLSE (125 mg, approximately 170 mumol of phospholipid) was suspended in 10 ml of sterile saline and instilled intratracheally into their lungs, starting at 24 h in O2, a time at which no physiological or biochemical injury was detected, and at 24-h intervals thereafter. Control rabbits breathed 100% O2 and received either equal volumes of saline or no instillations at all. CLSE-instilled rabbits had higher arterial PO2 (Pao2) values throughout the exposure period and survived longer when compared with saline controls [120 +/- 4 vs. 102 +/- 4 (SE) h; n greater than or equal to 10; P less than 0.05]. At 72 h in O2, CLSE-instilled rabbits had significantly higher lavageable alveolar phospholipid levels (12.5 +/- 1.5 vs. 5 +/- 1 mumol/kg) and total lung capacities (41 +/- 2 vs. 25 +/- 3.5 ml/kg) and lower levels of alveolar protein (24 +/- 3 vs. 52 +/- 8 mg/kg), minimum surface tension (2 +/- 1 vs. 26.1 dyn/cm), and lung wet-to-dry weights (5.9 +/- 0.2 vs. 6.5 +/- 0.3). After 72 h in O2, lungs from both CLSE- and saline-instilled rabbits showed evidence of diffuse hyperoxic injury. However, atelectasis was less prominent in the former. We concluded that instillation of CLSE limits the onset and development of hyperoxic lung injury to the alveolar epithelium of rabbits.  相似文献

Response in pyramidal neurons belonging to the sensorimotor cortex (37% of total nerve cells investigated in this zone) which were identified by stimulating the bulbar pyramids, were investigated during experiments on unrestrained rabbits. Pyramidal neurons having connections with the lateral hypothalamus were activated during operation of feeding behavior, while activity was inhibited in those unconnected with the lateral hypothalamus. Microiontophoretic application of a protein synthesis inhibitor to pyramidal neurons caused their ability to respond to ascending activating influences from the lateral hypothalamus to disappear. When pentagastrin was applied to these neurons following the protein synthesis blocker, they recovered their ability to participate in hypothalamic feeding reaction. It is suggested that synthesis and release of a gastrin-like peptide into the perineuronal space is required for sensorimotor cortex pyramidal neurons to participate in the organization of feeding behavior.P. Nine groups of ex-germfree (GF) rabbits were produced by inoculation of hysterectomy-derived GF rabbits with various combinations of cecal bacteria isolated from conventional (CV) rabbits in order to establish a barrier-sustained colony. Six strains of Bacteroides and two strains of Streptococcus isolated from CV rabbits (2 to 3 weeks old) were used for pretreatment. The mortality of ex-GF rabbits inoculated with the anaerobic growth (CF) on EG or SM10 plates inoculated with a 10(-5) dilution of cecal contents was 71.4 to 94.4% when given without pretreatment. All ex-GF rabbits pretreated with Bacteroides alone survived, but the mortality of ex-GF rabbits inoculated with Bacteroides plus Streptococcus strains as pretreatment was 20 and 45.4%. The mortality of ex-GF rabbits inoculated with only Bacteroides was 43%. All ex-GF rabbits inoculated with Bacteroides plus anaerobic growth (CF), cecal suspension of ex-GF mice which had been inoculated with cecal suspensions of CV rabbits (MF) or chloroform-treated cecal suspension (CHF) survived, but CHF inoculated ex-GF rabbits were in an unhealthy condition with slight diarrhoea. These data indicate that inoculation with Bacteroides strains as pretreatment plus CF or MF was required to convert GF rabbits to the normal state.  相似文献

The ability of young rabbits to digest a solid diet was evaluated according to the weaning age: 21 (W21, 12 litters) or 35 (W35, 12 litters) days of age. From 14 days onwards, the rabbits were fed the same pelleted feed. Three methods were compared to estimate the faecal digestibility in the young rabbits, between 24 to 28 and 38 to 42 days. Digestive balance at ileal and faecal levels was determined for the main nutrients provided by milk and solid feed. The W21 rabbits increased their solid feed intake only 2 days after their weaning, when compared with suckling rabbits. Thus, their crude protein (CP) intake remained lower until 26 days compared with the W35 rabbits (from 41%, P < 0.01), as well as their crude fat intake until 28 days (from 72%, P < 0.001). On the contrary, the W35 rabbits increased their solid feed intake without a delay after weaning, quickly reaching the intake level of the W21 rabbits. The amounts of organic matter (OM) and CP reaching the caecum were increased on day 28 by 56% and 42% in the W21 rabbits compared with the W35 rabbits, respectively (P < 0.05), and were similar between groups on day 42. Starch ileal digestibility coefficients were 94·2% and 95·4% in 28- and 42-day-old rabbits, respectively, irrespective of the weaning age. The amount of starch flowing through the ileo-caecal junction was low and only tended to be higher on day 28 in the W21 group (0.20 v. 0.15 g/day in the W35 group, P = 0.10). The digestive balance pointed out that the digestible energy intake was similar between weaned and suckling rabbits from 23 to 27 days, a phenomenon partly explained by a high ability of the W21 rabbits to digest starch (98%) and NDF (36%). Indeed, the amounts of starch and NDF digested by the W21 group were 2.0- and 2.4-fold higher than those of the W35 rabbits at this period (P < 0.001). However, they ate 20% less digestible proteins than still-suckling rabbits (P < 0.001). From 38 till 42 days, only a lower ability of the W21 rabbits to digest lipids was detected (P < 0.05). In conclusion, early-weaned rabbits were able to adapt quickly to digest large amounts of starch and fibres.  相似文献

Aluminum hydroxide gel (Al-gel), which is used as an adjuvant, can absorb macromolecules. We investigated the applicability of Al-gel to the sustained release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as a simplified method of superovulation (SOV) in rabbits. The responsiveness of rabbits to SOV by a single injection of FSH dissolved in Al-gel suspension (3.2 mg Al/ml) and in 10% (w/v) polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and by multiple injections of FSH in saline was examined. The numbers of total and fertilized eggs recovered from rabbits treated with FSH in Al-gel (40.5 and 26.3, respectively) were similar to multiple injections (47.4 and 28.6, respectively) and were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than single injection of FSH with PVP (17.3 and 11.5, respectively). We also compared the plasma FSH levels of rabbits which were induced SOV by multiple or a single injection of Al-gel. Al-gel provided sustained release of FSH to the blood stream at a high enough dose for SOV. Moreover, the developmental competence of the pups of DNA-injected embryos from rabbits treated with a single injection of FSH mixed with Al-gel (18%) was similar to that of DNA-injected embryos, recovered from rabbits treated with FSH dissolved in saline (21%). Two transgenic pups were obtained from embryos recovered from rabbits by a single injection of FSH with Al-gel. These results indicate that a single injection of FSH with Al-gel is an effective method for SOV of rabbit and that this technique is applicable to research requiring large numbers of rabbit embryos such as the production of transgenic rabbits.  相似文献

Chemically brominated poly[r(C-G)] [Br-poly[r(C-G)]] containing 32% br8G and 26% br5C was recently shown to contain a 1:1 mixture of A- and Z-form unmodified nucleotides under physiological conditions of temperature, pH, and ionic strength [Hardin, C. C., Zarling, D. A., Puglisi, J. D., Trulson, M. O., Davis, P. W., & Tinoco, I., Jr. (1987) Biochemistry 26, 5191-5199]. Proton NMR results show that more extensive bromination of poly[r(C-G)] (49% br8G, 43% br5C) produces polynucleotides containing greater than 80% unmodified Z-form nucleotides. Using these polynucleotides as antigens, polyclonal antibodies were elicited in rabbits and mice specific for the Z-form of RNA. IgG fractions were purified from rabbit anti-Br-poly[r(C-G)] sera and characterized by immunoprecipitation, nitrocellulose filter binding, and ELISA. Two different anti-Z-RNA IgG specificities were observed. Decreased levels of brominated nucleotides in the immunogen correlated with an increased extent of specific cross-reactivity with Z-DNA. Inoculation of rabbits with polynucleotide immunogens containing 49% br8G and 43% of br5C produced specific anti-Z-RNA IgGs that do not recognize Z-DNA determinants. This suggests that the 2'-OH group is part of the anti-Z-RNA IgG determinant. In contrast, Br-poly[r(C-G)] immunogens containing 32% br8G and 26% br5C produced IgGs that specifically recognize both Z-RNA and Z-DNA. These results show that the bromine atoms are not required for recognition of the Z conformation by the antibodies. Treatment of low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-deficient rabbits (WHHL rabbits) with probucol (1% w/w in a chow diet) lowered their LDL-cholesterol levels by 36%, consonant with the reported effectiveness of the drug in patients deficient in the LDL receptor. Initial studies of LDL fractional catabolic rate (FCR) using 125I-labeled LDL prepared from the serum of untreated WHHL rabbits showed no difference between probucol-treated WHHL rabbits and untreated WHHL rabbits. When, however, 125I-labeled LDL was prepared from donor WHHL rabbits under treatment with probucol and injected back into them, the FCR was found to be increased by about 50% above that measured simultaneously using 131I-labeled LDL prepared from untreated WHHL donors. The labeled LDL from probucol-treated donors was also metabolized more rapidly than that from untreated donors when injected into untreated WHHL rabbits or into untreated wild-type New Zealand White rabbits. Finally, it was shown that rabbit skin fibroblasts in culture degraded labeled LDL prepared from probucol-treated WHHL rabbits more rapidly than that prepared from untreated WHHL donors. This was true both for normal rabbit fibroblasts and also for WHHL skin fibroblasts, although the absolute degradation rates in the latter were, of course, much lower for both forms of LDL. The data indicate that a major mechanism by which probucol lowers LDL levels relates not to changes in the cellular mechanisms for LDL uptake or to changes in LDL production but rather to intrinsic changes in the structure and metabolism of the plasma LDL of the probucol-treated animal.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The present results are a continuation of our experiments demonstrating the fact that the local action of a permanent magnetic field (PMF) with an intensity of 0.2 T on the rabbits carotid sinus area under pentobarbital anaesthesia has a hypotensive effect under normotonic conditions (Gmitrová et al. 1987). The aim of this paper was to investigate the PMF influence on the carotid sinus region during artificial hypotension in rabbits. The experiments were carried out in rabbits under pentobarbital anaesthesia under hypotonic conditions caused by electrostimulation of the right depressor nerve. Blood pressure, heart rate and respiration rate changes were monitored before the application of PMF (0.2 T intensity) on the sinocarotid region, during the "on" effect of PMF, under the PMF action, during the PMF "off" effect and after PMF application. PMF significantly decreased the depressor effect of depressor nerve electrostimulation in contrast to the condition of normotonia, where PMF had a hypotensive effect.  相似文献

Biologically active Low-molecular-weight, chromium-binding substance (LMCr) has been isolated from the liver of rabbits injected with potassium bicarbonate and cow's milk. This substance enhances glucose oxidation and lipogenesis from glucose in rat adipocytes [Yamamoto A. et al. (1987) Eur. J. Biochem. 165, 627-631; (1988) J. Nut. 118, 39-45]. LMCr was shown to lose its activity almost completely as an effectant of glucose metabolism when Cr was deleted under acidic conditions and separated from LMCr by EDTA-chelation and successive molecular-sieve chromatography. Reincorporation of Cr3+ into apo-LMCr resulted in 50-90% recovery of its original activity. These findings suggest that the biological activity of LMCr resides in Cr.  相似文献

In recent years, the impacts of rapidly increasing populations of feral horses and deer on the vegetation and stability of soils have become highly visible and widespread in Kosciuszko National Park. We investigated these impacts in the White Cypress Pine (Callitris glaucophylla Joy Thomps. & L.A.S. Johnson) – White Box (Eucalyptus albens Benth) woodlands of the lower Snowy River valley. This woodland is a component of the White Box‐Yellow Box‐Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Native Grasslands complex that is nationally listed as a critically endangered ecological community. To investigate the severity of the impacts of feral horse (Equus caballus) and deer (Dama dama and Rusa unicolor) in the valley in 2013 and 2017/18, we surveyed fenced exclosures and paired grazed plots that were first established and surveyed in 1984 and re‐surveyed in 1987. Using LFA and VAST methodologies (not used in 1987), we compared the relative response of environmental variables in plots inside and outside the exclosures in an attempt to ascertain recent herbivore impacts. While there was no evidence of horses or deer from dung surveys in 1987, in 2018, 84% of the dung was from horses, 13% from deer, 1% from rabbits and 2% from macropods. Total herbivore dung density increased fourfold since the 1987 survey. On the understanding that all plots had the same starting condition in 1984 with respect to prior herbivory, we deduce that horses and deer are having significant ecological impacts. There was a far greater cover of understorey plants and the midstorey was denser and taller inside the exclosures. Outside the exclosures, the vegetation cover was far more sparse and soil erosion was active and extensive. The total number of invertebrates captured in small pitfall traps was nearly twice as many within the exclosures compared to the grazed plots. The dense even‐aged regrowth overstorey stands of White Cypress Pine, inside and outside the exclosures, have changed little in 34 years.  相似文献

The postweaning development of caecal microbial activity was studied in the rabbit according to the sanitary status (conventional "C" vs. specified pathogen-free "SPF") and the nutritional status (standard-fibre "SF" vs. deficient-fibre "DF" diet). The two diets were distributed ad libitum from weaning (28 days) to 70 days of age, respectively, to 80 C and 72 SPF rabbits. From 28 to 42 days, the volatile fatty acids concentration in the caecum (tVFA) of C rabbits was 50 mM/L and increased by 46% between 42 and 56 days, without interactions with the diet effect. In parallel, the bacterial fibrolytic activity decreased for xylanase and CMCase (-32% and -60%, respectively, P<0.05), while pectinase activity decreased more regularly from 28 to 70 days (-28%, P<0.05). At weaning, tVFA was similar among C or SPF rabbits, while at 70 days, it decreased by 23% for SPF and increased in C group (+31%). Cellulasic and hemicellulasic activity of bacteria were two to three times lower, respectively, in SPF rabbits compared to conventional ones. No interaction was detected between sanitary and nutritional status at 70 days of age for the caecal fermentative activity. With the FD diet, tVFA decreased by 10%, while butyrate proportion increased by 37% (at 70 days), whatever the sanitary status. In 70-day-old rabbits (C or SPF group), pectinasic activity was reduced by 30% when rabbits were fed the FD compared to the SF one.  相似文献

The pyrophosphate dependent phosphofructokinase (PFP, EC 2.7.1.90 [EC] )was purified from potato tubers, bean seeds and cucumber seeds.The PFP of all three species appears to contain two subunitswith a molecular weight of approximately 60,000 and 66,000 dalton.The purified proteins were used as the antigens to produce polyclonalantibodies in rabbits. Two of the obtained sera (anti-potatoPFP and anti-cucumber PFP) proved to be monospecific for thePFP polypeptides on protein blots. The antipotato serum crossreacts with the PFP from all the tested higher plant specieson protein blots, but no cross reaction with the PFP of Propionibacteriumsharmanii was found. OBJECTIVE--To determine the prevalence of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in all patients attending a London sexually transmitted disease clinic over four weeks at the end of 1987 and to see how it varied from that in similar samples studied between 1982 and 1986. DESIGN--Anonymous testing of serum samples from consecutive heterosexual and homosexual patients having routine serological investigations for syphilis. Testing was for anti-HIV-I, anti-HIV-II, and hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) and P24 antigen. Age, nationality, sexual orientation, and past sexually transmitted diseases were recorded for each patient. Gonorrhoea rates by quarters were analysed among homosexual and bisexual men and heterosexual men and women from 1981 to 1987. SETTING--Outpatient department of genitourinary medicine. PATIENTS--A total of 1074 patients attending consecutively for syphilis serology. Thirty five homosexual and bisexual men were excluded (these were regular attenders as part of a prospective study of the natural course of HIV infection). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS--The prevalence of anti-HIV-I in homosexual and bisexual men in 1987 was 25.6% (64/250). Results in the same clinic population between 1982 and 1984 had shown a rise in prevalence, which flattened out in 1985-6 and continued at that level. Among heterosexual attenders in 1987 the prevalence of anti-HIV-I was 1% (women 4/412; men 4/377), which contrasted with a prevalence of 0.5% (women 2/395; men 3/757) in January 1986. One homosexual man was seropositive for anti-HIV-II and seronegative for anti-HIV-I. Among homosexual and bisexual men the rate of gonorrhoea had declined by an average of 2.7% a year since 1981, such that by 1987--and for the first time in the clinic--there was no significant difference in the rates between these men and heterosexual men and women. CONCLUSIONS--The appearance of HIV-I infection among heterosexuals indicates a need for more aggressive education programmes and intervention strategies along the lines adopted for homosexual men. Surveillance for HIV-II infection is needed to provide information for future policy in national screening programmes.  相似文献
