Spatial patterns in benthic infaunal community structure of Port Curtis estuary (north-eastern Australia) were determined from quantitative grab samples and examined in relation to environmental variables. A total of 149 riverine, estuarine and open coastal stations were sampled during the winter survey, and 5744 individuals from 466 species identified. Filter-feeding organisms (primarily polychaetes, molluscs and crustaceans) dominated the benthos, and accounted for 50% of the total species abundance and 30% of the total species richness. Most taxa were uncommon, and 98% of species individually represented less than 2% of the total abundance. Distributional patterns in total species richness and abundance were highly correlated, and both parameters varied significantly with sediment grain size. Numbers of species and individuals were typically highest in coarse-sand and gravel sediments, and were lowest in fine, well-sorted, sands. Cluster analysis of species abundance data revealed nine community groupings characterised by small species sub-sets with restricted distributions. These groupings were primarily related to sediment grain size, sediment organic carbon content, salinity and depth. Not all variation in community structure was explained by these environmental variables, and it is likely that other unmeasured factors play an important role in determining benthic faunal composition in the estuary.  相似文献

A cohesive sediment balance for the Scheldt estuary   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This article present a method to generate a cohesive sediment balance for the Scheldt estuary (The Netherlands and Belgium). In this balance the net transports have been determined on a regional scale. The complicated circulation patterns on a smaller scale are considered as a black box. The cohesive sediments in the balance are defined as the inorganic sediment with a particle size smaller than 63 μm. In the balance a distinction is made between the relatively ‘clean’ marine mud fraction and the more polluted fluvial fraction. The calculations are made on a basis of field data. The field data of the morphological changes in the estuary are based on the period of 1975–1985. The net natural transport of fluvial mud is estimated to reach beyond the mouth of the estuary. The net marine import of mud is estimated to reach beyond the brackish part of the estuary, located in Belgium. The sediment balance also provides the time scale for the response of an estuary. The time scale related to the reduction in pollution proves to be quite large. Calculations with a simple analytic model with typical values for the Scheldt estuary indicate that several decades will pass until a significant improvement in bottom sediment quality is reached even after a 100% reduction of the loading of pollutants. The presented balance is not the final answer. Improvements can be achieved by more accurate field data, smaller morphological units and verification by other methods (cf. tracer methods, mathematical models).  相似文献

The analysis of benthic populations in the estuary of the Seine was realized from samples collected with a sediment pump (summer 1978, winter 1979). Coherent results were obtained using Principal Coordinates Analysis applied to the definition of statistical communities (R mode) or the determination of biotopes (Q mode). The best ecological interpretation arises from the estimation of specific dominances in each of the environments (seven biotopes and four different populations). The difference between this classification and the one obtained from demographic characters (summer continuum and tendency to differentiated populations in winter) shows, however, that there are no clear boundaries separating biotopes or populations. Instead, there is a more or less pronounced overlap of different niches for the benthos of the Seine estuary.  相似文献

Study of Recent abyssal benthic foraminifera from core-top samples in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean has identified distinctive faunas whose distribution patterns reflect the major hydrographic features of the region. Above 3800 m, Indian Deep Water (IDW) is characterized by a diverse and evenly-distributed biofacies to whichGlobocassidulina subglobosa, Pyrgo spp.,Uvigerina peregrina, andEggerella bradyi are the major contributors.Nuttalides umbonifera andEpistominella exigua are associated with Indian Bottom Water (IBW) below 3800 m. Within the IBW fauna,N. umbonifera andE. exigua are characteristic of two biofacies with independent distribution patterns.Nuttalides umbonifera systematically increases in abundance with increasing water depth. TheE. exigua biofacies reaches its greatest abundance in sediments on the eastern flank of the Ninetyeast Ridge and in the Wharton-Cocos Basin. The hydrographic transition between IDW and IBW coincides with the level of transition from waters supersaturated to waters undersaturated with respect to calcite and with the depth of the lysocline. Carbonate saturation levels, possibly combined with the effects of selective dissolution on the benthic foraminiferal populations, best explain the change in faunas across the IDW/IBW boundary and the bathymetric distribution pattern ofN. umbonifera. The distribution of theE. exigua fauna cannot be explained with this model.Epistominella exigua is associated with the colder, more oxygenated IBW of the Wharton-Cocos Basin. The distribution of this biofacies on the eastern flank of the Ninetyeast Ridge agrees well with the calculated bathymetric position of the northward flowing deep boundary current which aerates the eastern basins of the Indian Ocean.  相似文献

There have been surprisingly few empirical investigations of the fundamental principle that the architecture of depositional sequences exerts considerable control on observed patterns of faunal distribution and replacement. In this paper, we examine trilobite associations in two sequences of the Upper Ordovician (Sandbian) Bromide Formation of southern Oklahoma. Cluster analysis and ordination of genus abundance data identified five lithofacies‐related biofacies that are also differentiated by diversity patterns. Biofacies of the transgressive system tract (TST) of successive sequences are more similar to each other than they are to biofacies in the highstand systems tract (HST) of the same sequence. This similarity likely records dominance of large, robust convex sclerites in taphonomically degraded samples from condensed, strongly winnowed grainstone and rudstone. Horizons with articulated exoskeletons of isoteline trilobites preserved by obrution deposits occur most commonly in the early HST and record behavioural aggregations. Grainstone and rudstone of the later HST are less winnowed than those of the TST and show less fragmentation and sorting of sclerites. These changes in taphonomic conditions preserve ecological patterns more clearly. In most biofacies, rarefied alpha diversity (samples) and gamma diversity (biofacies) of middle‐ and outer‐ramp HST deposits are greater than in the TSTs, and biofacies replace each other down ramp. Diversity patterns do not agree with model predictions and other data sets that indicate low beta and high alpha diversity in the TST, likely because of taphonomic degradation. Vertical replacement of biofacies is expressed by the appearance of peritidal facies in which trilobites are rare. Biofacies shifts also characterize sequence boundaries and are most profound in the inner‐ramp successions characterized by sharp facies offsets. Comparison with bathymetrically similar deposits in the Taconic foreland basin showed similar diversity trends along environmental gradients, with some differences in shallow‐water settings attributed to taphonomic differences.  相似文献

EVOLUTIONARY AND ECOLOGIC SIGNIFICANCE OF OXYGEN-DEFICIENT MARINE BASINS   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Benthic invertebrates living in low oxygen regions of the Black Sea, Gulf of California, and basins off Southern California form three major biofacies associated with the following concentrations of dissolved oxygen: (1) an azoic region (≤ 0.1 ml/1), (2) a low diversity, small, soft-bodied infauna (0.3–1.0 ml/1), and (3) a diverse calcareous fauna (2 1.0 ml/l). These biofacies recapitulate the chronologic appearance of Pre-Cambrian trace fossils followed by a diverse calcified fauna in the Cambrian.
The basin model has been used to reconstruct a Lower Cambrian oxygen level of 0.1 P.A.L. (present atmospheric level). This value is ten-fold that proposed in the Berkner-Marshall hypothesis.  相似文献

The relative effects of shell destruction, transportation, and time-averaging have been assessed in seventeen soft-bottom, benthic fossil collections from the Pennsylvanian Wewoka Formation in Hughes County, Oklahoma. Invertebrates were identified to species level, and each was subject to a taphonomic evaluation to determine whether it was in place. Species that were not deemed parautochthonous (living at the location of collection shortly before final burial) were eliminated from the faunal lists to reduce the effects of time-averaging and transportation in the fossil assemblages. Both reciprocal averaging and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordinations revealed two biofacies. These were distinguished using both presence/absence data and numerical counts of species despite an overwhelming number of taxa occurring in both biofacies. Comparison between ordinations based on entire faunal lists with those based on parautochthonous faunal lists indicates that the two biofacies faithfully reproduce differences in the living distributions of member taxa but that the two biofacies underwent different degrees of time-averaging and transportation. Time-averaging leads to accumulation of taxa over time, thereby making presence/absence composition of collections more similar. Transportation, on the other hand, homogenizes originally patchy population distributions and makes relative abundances more uniform. Based on differences in abundances and presence/absence patterns, the stratigraphically lower biofacies underwent more transportation and more time-averaging than the upper biofacies.  相似文献

Recognition of North Pacific paleoceanographic events in the marginal Humboldt (Eel River) basin of northern California enables correlation of stratigraphic sections and development of a chronostratigraphy. Paleoclimatically related coiling shifts in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (Ehrenberg) and benthic foraminiferal datums form the basis of the chronostratigraphy. Benthic foraminiferal datums are defined by the occurrence of selected benthic species and abundance maxima of benthic biofacies. The compiled chronostratigraphy is used to refine reconstructions of the depositional history of Humboldt basin. Paleoceanographic events, recognized by the distribution of benthic foraminiferal biofacies, are used to infer paleoceanographic history along the northeastern Pacific margin.

The similarity in coiling curves of N. pachyderma from the marine sequence at DSDP Site 173 and the coastal Centerville Beach section of Humboldt basin and at other independently dated sites along the northeastern Pacific margin demonstrates that matching records of climatic oscillations is a reliable method of correlating marine sequences. Benthic fauna from the Centerville Beach section vary in phase with climatically related coiling shifts in N. pachyderma. In particular these data show an increase in displaced neritic fauna during inferred warm intervals and resurgence of deeper bathyal fauna during inferred cool events. Similar data are observed from the inland Eel River section, demonstrating that benthic foraminiferal trends recognized at Centerville Beach can be identified elsewhere in Humboldt basin. This in-phase benthic response to climatic fluctuations probably results from changes in vertical depth range of many benthic species in response to paleoclimatically related vertical changes in water-mass position.

Depositional histories reconstructed for two key sites in southern Humboldt basin indicate low rates of sediment accumulation during early basin filling with hemipelagic sediments. Initiation of turbidite sedimentation in the early Pliocene resulted in a sharp increase in rate of sediment accumulation. This increase in rate of sediment accumulation is partially a response to tectonic uplift in the northern Coast Ranges and may be an effect of realignment of motion between the Pacific and North American plates at about this time. The inland site shoaled more rapidly during turbidite sedimentation as a result of a higher rate of sediment accumulation. The rate of sediment accumulation increased again at this site in the late Pliocene during deposition of shelf and nearshore facies. The Eel River region subsided concurrent with deposition of these shallow-water deposits.  相似文献

Studies examining recruitment processes for soft-sediment macroinvertebrate fauna in intermittent estuaries are rare and most studies of active habitat selection have been tested in the laboratory rather than the field. The present field study examined whether recruitment of the infaunal bivalve Soletellina alba was influenced by water depth and sediment particle size in the intermittent Hopkins River estuary, southern Australia. The number of recruits in sediment trays differed between water depths, but active habitat selection was not evident across treatments of varying sediment particle size. The use of sediments with varying particle sizes also provided an opportunity to identify potential discontinuities in body-size distributions of recruits associated with varying habitat architecture. The length (mm) of recruits was converted to the same scale used to express sediment particle size (i.e. phi units: ? = − log2 of sediment particle size). The size of recruits differed across water depths, but did not differ across treatments with fine (? = 3) versus coarse (? = 1) sediment, and no relationships were apparent between bivalve size and sediments consisting of varying particle size. These patterns of recruitment do not correspond with the distribution of adult S. alba within the Hopkins River estuary. Previous sampling has shown that abundances of juvenile and adult S. alba are variable across time, site and water depth, but are often greater at the deeper water depth (1.05 m below the Australian Height Datum). However, recruitment during the present study was greatest at the shallower water depth (0.05 m below AHD), and the apparent absence of active habitat selection suggests that the distribution of adults is unlikely to be attributable to differences in recruitment associated with sediments of varying particle size.  相似文献

Thirteen estuaries in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, were broadly categorised according to size and salinity distribution and were assigned to one of the following categories: permanently open estuaries having a strong salinity gradient between mouth and upper estuary, freshwater-deprived permanently open estuaries, medium-sized temporarily open/closed estuaries, and small, temporarily open/closed estuaries. The macrobenthos collected during surveys was then compared in terms of the following parameters: species composition, salinity, sediment mud content, density of macrobenthic animals, Hill's N0 (species richness), and Hill's N1 (diversity). Mud content was found to be the most important environmental variable responsible for biotic patterns found, and sites were consequently assigned to either a sand zone fauna, or a mud zone fauna. Both types of fauna are present in all estuaries sampled, with upper sites of river dominated estuaries having an additional oligohaline fauna, and freshwater-deprived estuaries providing habitat for many marine species. Small, temporarily open/closed estuaries have the highest macrobenthic density, whereas N0 and N1 are highest in freshwater-deprived permanently open systems. River-dominated permanently open estuaries tend to have lower macrobenthic densities, species richness, and diversities compared to estuaries in the other categories. No seasonal differences in these ecological indices were found within any of the estuarine categories.  相似文献

Surface sediment samples collected from the fjord region of southern Chile (47° to 54° South) were analyzed for benthic foraminifera. A total of 175 species were identified including agglutinated and calcareous benthic taxa. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the foraminiferal data resulted in the recognition of three distinct biofacies: inner-fjord, intermediate fjord and channel, and oceanic biofacies, geographically controlled by relative position between the Pacific Ocean and fjord heads. Similarity percentage (SIMPER) analysis identified key taxa in the definition of the biofacies that include Globocassidulina rossensis, Cassidulina laevigata and Bulimina notovata. Principal components analysis resulted in two principal components representing sediment size, and bottom water temperature and salinity.Regional distributions are strongly controlled by the oceanographic conditions influenced from the Pacific in the west and the glacial/freshwater input from the east. Localized distributions of foraminifera are controlled by conditions influenced by the physiography of the individual fjords and channels. The distribution of Chilean fjord foraminifera and their environmental associations are consistent with results from other temperate to high latitude fjord foraminiferal studies.  相似文献

The macrobenthic fauna of the organically enriched Oslofjord was sampled in Sept.–Nov. 1977. Seventy-six stations were sampled using a stratified random plan. A total of 146 species were identified, dominated by polychaetes, molluscs and echinoderms. The faunal data were analysed by a variety of methods including diversity indices, log-normal distribution of individuals among species, factor analysis and numerical classification. The primary aim was the detection of pollution-induced disturbance and to delimit the extent of pollution on the benthic fauna of Oslofjord. All of the methods used showed a gradient from heavy pollution at the innermost part of the fjord where few species occurred, together with high dominance and low diversity, to normal unpolluted conditions at the Drøbak sill with high species diversity. From the classification analysis a combination of both site and species data revealed a trend in species groupings which were broadly similar to data from other Scandinavian fjords and from Scotland. Hydrographical and biological data taken at the turn of the century and in the 1960's compared with the present data show declining conditions in Oslofjord, due primarily to organic enrichment combined with a naturally poor water exchange which leads to stagnation of the water mass.  相似文献

This study characterizes the composition and spatial distribution patterns of the benthic macrofauna in the intertidal mudflats of the Tagus estuary, western Portugal. A total of 68 species, more than 226,000 specimens with a total wet weight biomass of approximately 1170 g were identified in 380 sites. The species Streblospio shrubsolii, Cyathura carinata, Tharyx sp., Hydrobia ulvae and Tubificids were the most common and abundant. Scrobicularia plana strongly dominated the biomass. The invertebrate macrofauna of the Tagus estuary shows similarities to what is known from other temperate mudflats. The diversity of species, their overall abundance and the ratio of Molluscs plus Crustaceans to Polychaete species corroborate the distinctiveness between temperate and tropical mudflats and sandflats. The spatial distribution of the fauna reflects the sediment characteristics but the relationship between the environmental and the biological data is not as strong as obtained for sublittoral areas. This relationship diminishes from the sublittoral shelf to sublittoral estuarine areas, showing minimum values in this study, suggesting that such a relationship is less straightforward as natural disturbance increases. Nevertheless, a mixture of grain-size, elevation (inundation time) and particular habitats (relic oyster beds) form the best explanatory factors for the spatial distribution patterns of the intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Tagus estuary.  相似文献

Species composition, distribution, and the character of structural changes in the heterotrophic flagellate community were studied along environmental gradients in the Chernaya River estuary. There were 99 species and forms of heterotrophic flagellates, subdivided into three groups: prevalently marine species and euryhaline species preferring biotopes either of higher or decreased salinity. The heterotrophic flagellate community of the estuary was continuously divided into two distinct variants: (1) cenosis of halophilic species, prevalently of sea forms and euryhaline species preferring biotopes of increased salinity; (2) cenosis of halophobic species with prevalence of euryhaline forms gravitating to fresh biotopes. The arbitrary and indistinct boundary between the variants of the community ran at a salinity of 9–10‰. The response of estuarine communities of heterotrophic flagellates and infusorians to variation of abiotic factors was similar and differed from response of communities of microphyto-, meiozoo-and macrozoobenthos; this implied similarity of the response mechanism to environmental factors in organisms of one level of organization.  相似文献

Macrobenthic fauna and sediment structure were studied at 6 stations from June 1979 to April 1981. The investigations were carried out in the outer estuary of the River Elbe at depths of 15–38 m near a sewage sludge dumping site. The sediment near this area consisted of a high portion of silt. Usually, very few species and small numbers of individuals were found near that dumping ground. During summer 1980, a mass development ofAbra alba and several polychaete species caused an increase in species number which broke down during the following winter. The mass development observed in the study area was apparently not directly caused by the sludge dumping itself, but reflects the natural variability of the community structure. The number of species recorded was significantly correlated with a grain size fraction>31 μm, especially in summer. The seasonal and spatial fluctuation of the benthic community could be well documented by the abundance per species (N/S index). The Shannon-Wiener-Index (H′) and eveness (J) were also useful indicators of community variability. The log-normal distribution did not show the seasonal and the spatial differences of the stations. Possible reasons are discussed. The biomass at the stations near the dumping area was less except during the mass development ofA. alba. The average individual weight (B/N) was shown to be a good indicator of population fluctuations; polychaete biomass was positively correlated to a grain size fraction≦6 μm, that of molluscs to a grain size fraction>31 μm.   相似文献

The public authorities have recently approved the building of a Littoral Station in Aguda, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast, 15 km south of the River Douro estuary in the municipal area of Vila Nova de Gaia. The internal structure of the building involves a Fishery Museum exhibiting ancient and modern gear, a Public Aquarium displaying the local marine fauna and flora and a Research and Educational Department for marine biology, aquaculture and fishery. The project was drawn up by the architect João Paulo Peixoto, in collaboration with local engineers, and the author. In Aguda there is an active, small-scale fishery, based on traditional methods handed down from generation to generation. The almost unstudied local marine fauna and flora is characterized by a high diversity of invertebrates and a rich abundance of fish stocks. Easy access to a variety of marine biotopes is guaranteed by means of the local fishing-fleet, thus supporting the Station's programme of education and research.  相似文献

The distribution of benthonic communities (particularly Foraminifera) were studied from fourteen samples obtained from the Ogun River estuary and environs. Ten species of benthonic Foraminifera were identified; two of these constitute over 90% of the total foraminiferal population.Two broad biofacies are recognisable, namely the upper estuarine facies of Ammobaculites and the lower estuarine facies comprising arenaceous and calcereous forms with a preponderance of Ammonia beccarii (Linnaeus).Large populations of few species occur in the lower estuary, an area of weakly saline water with marked salinity fluctuations. The upper estuary on the other hand is sparsely populated and contains tests mainly of arenaeous Foraminifera. A few species are distinctive of particular facies but some are distributed throughout the estuary. Substrate is not a causal ecological factor, because sediments are similar in physical attributes throughout the estuary. Salinity and rate of sedimentation are among the more important factors affecting the distribution of all species. The low-energy nature of the environment is established by the abundance of faecal pellets and the fragility of the tests of the arenaceous Foraminifera.  相似文献

The zebra mussel Dreissena bugensis (Andrusov), a representative of mollusc fauna in the Dnieper-Bug estuary, have been found for the first time in the Rybinsk reservoir (the Volga reach, Shumorovka River). In pericardial and mantle cavities and inner organs of molluscs the following parsites have been found: Aspidogaster limacoides, Caspiobdella fadejevi, Helobdella stagnalis, eggs of the water mites of the genus Unionicola, and representatives of nonspecific saprotrophic fungi of the genus Acremonium. It is shown that composition of parasites and free-living organisms in D. bugensis is similar to that in D. polymorpha.  相似文献

研究以正式发表的淡水软体动物文献和部分未发表野外调查数据为基础资料,分析了长江流域淡水软体动物物种多样性及分布格局。长江流域已报道的软体动物有296种,隶属17科62属,其中有197种是中国特有种。田螺科、肋蜷科、盖螺科、椎实螺科和蚌科是长江流域软体动物的主要组成部分,这5科种类数之和达249种,占总数的84.1%。从总体上低海拔地区的软体动物物种数高于高海拔地区,而高海拔地区特有种所占的比例却高于低海拔地区。支流和湖泊的种类数接近,分别为202种和210种,远高于长江干流(31种)。各水系软体动物的种类数、特有种数及特有种比例明显不同,洞庭湖水系和鄱阳湖水系的多样性最高。聚类分析表明,长江流域软体动物的分布基本反映了流域内的地势特点,形成了高原、中低海拔山地和低海拔平原的分布格局。不同类群的物种其分布格局也不相同,田螺科和椎实螺科的分布范围较广,肋蜷科和盖螺科种类分布范围狭窄,多数种类仅存在于单个水系,蚌科种类分布最为集中,以鄱阳湖和洞庭湖的种类最为丰富,种类数分别为58种和45种。研究表明,金沙江下游(云贵高原湖泊)、鄱阳湖和洞庭湖软体动物物种多样性丰富,建议将其列为我国淡水软体动物急需关注和保护的热点地区。    相似文献

The Elwha River estuary has been significantly influenced by anthropogenic changes to the river, including two large dams upriver and rock dikes installed in the estuary. Together these have disrupted hydrodynamic processes and subsequent sediment delivery throughout the watershed. This article defines the functional response of fish distribution within the estuary as a result of these changes. We assessed fish distribution of three main areas of the Elwha estuary using standard beach seining techniques from March to August 2007. Species composition, ecological indices, and relative proportion of all salmonids, and in particular Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), were consistently significantly different across the estuary. Differences corresponded to a rock dike installed 30 years ago, and a sediment lens that was observed to form at the entrance to the east estuary. Sediment lenses are documented to be a common occurrence in the Elwha nearshore, and symptomatic of documented, severely disrupted sediment processes of the Elwha River. Combining the fish distribution documented in this study with the rock dike and observed sediment lens and the sediment processes documented by other researchers we, therefore, conclude: (1) Fish use within the Elwha River estuary is complex, and even fragments of connected estuary are critically important for migrating salmon; (2) Anthropogenic effects, including in river damming and diking of the estuary, can be an important ecological driver in nearshore habitat function that should be appropriately considered in estuary habitat research, management, and restoration; and (3) Juvenile salmonids appear to be able to respond to dynamic sediment environments if there are habitat options available.  相似文献
