The Cape golden mole, Chrysochloris asiatica is an insectivore which excavates superficial foraging burrows as it searches for its food. It has a mean (±S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) when newly captured of 1–17±0.17 cm3 O2g-1 h-1 ( n = 14), within the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of 30–32°C.
The body temperature (Tb) of the mole in the TNZ is low 32.9 ± 0.36 ( n = 14) and remains stable at ambient temperatures (Tas) from 28–32°C. Above 32°C (range 34–37°C), Tb increases albeit slightly to 36 ± 1.75°C ( n = 14). The conductance is high 0.27 ± 006cm3 O2g-1 h-l°C-1 ( n = 46) at the lower limit of thermoneutrality. The mean RMR at 9°C (the lowest Ta tested) was 4.82±11 cm3 O2g-1h-1, which is 4.1 times that of the RMR in the TNZ.
At an ambient temperature of 9°C, three of the golden moles entered a state of torpor where the RMR was reduced from 5.9±0.56 to 10 1.0 ± 0.69cm3O2g-1h-1.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Nemurella pictetii Klapæplek took 2 years to complete its life cycle in both the laboratory and a small stream in the English Lake District.
2. Hatching time (days after oviposition for 10%. 50% and 90% of the eggs to hatch) and hatching period (days between dates for 10% and 90% hatched) decreased with increasing water temperature in the laboratory, and the relationships were well described by a power-law. Estimates of the mean time for 50% hatching in the stream varied between 16 and 31 days after oviposition. depending on temperature.
3. Larval instars numbered fifteen for males and seventeen for females with a constant ratio of 1.18 between successive instars (conformed with Dyar's rule). Larval growth was exponential at four constant temperatures in the laboratory; mean instantaneous growth rates were 0.40±0.01% day−1 at 5.9°C, 0.43±0.01% day−1 at 8.2°C, 0.46±0.01% day−1 at 12. 1°C. 0.56±0.02%day−1 at 19.8°C. No larvae survived after instar XI at 19.8°C.
4. Larval growth was exponential in the stream and was scarcely affected by variations in water temperature (range 4.2 -14.0°C); mean growth rates for three year-classes were 0.41±0.02, 0.43±0.08, 0.54±0.05% day−1. Their similarity to laboratory growth rates under optimum conditions suggests that the availability of resources, such as food and space, was not restricting growth in the stream.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake rates and yolk-inclusive dry weiGhts were measured during the egg and yolk-sac larval stages of milkfish, Chanos chanos (Forsskal). Oxygen uptake by eggs and yolk-sac larvae was measured to assess the effects of four salinities (20,25,30,35 ppt) at 28°C. The effects of three temperatures (23,28,33°C) on oxygen uptake by yolk-sac larvae were determined at a salinity of 35 ppt. Dry weights were measured throughout embryonic development at 28°C and the yolk-sac stage at 23.28 and 33°C.
Oxygen uptake rates of eggs increased more than fivefold during embryogenesis (0.07±0.03 to 0.40 ± 03 μl O2 egg −1 h −1;blastula to prehatch stage). Larval oxygen uptake did not change with age but was affected by rearing temperature (0.33 ± 0.08, 0.44 ± 0.07 and 0.63 ± 0.13 μl O2 larva −1 h−1 at 23, 28 and 33°C, respectively; Q10= 1.93). Acute temperature changes from 28 to 33°C caused significant increases in oxygen uptake by embryos (Q 10= 1.69–3.58) and yolk-sac larvae (Q 10=2.55). Salinity did not affect metabolic rates.
Dry weight of eggs incubated at 28°C decreased 13% from fertilization to hatching. Incubation temperatures from 23–33°C did not affect dry weights at hatching. Rearing temperatures significantly affected the rate of larval yolk absorption (Q 10= 2.25).  相似文献

The feces of stream insects may be a major component of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) available to collector organisms. In Mink Creek, Idaho, winter defecation rates for 9 species ranged from 86 mg dry feces (g dry body wt)−1 d−1 (Ephemerella spinifera) to 154 mg g−1 d−1 (Paraleptophlebia heteronea) . Detailed studies of 3 species in summer revealed that rates were much greater than in winter and exhibited high between-individual variation (e.g., 695 ± 184.8 mg (g body wt)−1 d−1 for Baetis tricaudatus ). By combining measured and literature values, it is estimated that the benthic insect community egests approximately 3.4 kg feces m−2 yr−1. This value lies within the range of FPOM estimated to be derived from degradation of leaf litter input (0.7–9.9 kg m−2 yr−1, depending upon assimilation efficiency of the organisms).
Short-term winter growth experiments showed that, with two exceptions, collectors fed on fecal detritus will grow as well as on other food resources; relative growth rates depend upon the species. Because fecal detritus is abundant throughout the year, and is treated by many species as a source of food, it could be a major mechanism by which seasonal fluctuation in availability of allochthonous litter input is minimized and homeostasis of structure and function maintained.  相似文献

Routine oxygen consumption rates of bonnethead sharks, Sphyrna tiburo , increased from 141·3±29·7 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during autumn to 218·6±64·2 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during spring, and 329·7±38·3 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during summer. Blue-spotted trevally, Caranx bucculentus , were fed different rations of pilchard and prawn in order to investigate feeding and growth relationships. Maintenance rations at 25.5° C amounted to 3.7% B.W. day−1 and 2.7% B.W. day−1 for prawns and pilchards, respectively. Additional feeding experiments at 28.9° C yielded a maintenance ration of prawns of 3.8% B.W. day−1, suggesting there is very little if any temperature effect on the feeding-growth relationship over the range studied. Fish fed twice or more each day consumed about 7.3 ± 1.4% B.W. day−1.
Given the biomass of this trevally in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, and the contribution of prawns to its diet, we estimate consumption of commercial prawns at 25 ± 5 g.ha−1 day−1 or 11 g kg−1 day−1.  相似文献

Large quantities of cassava common mosaic virus (CCMV) were purified from systemically infected Nicotiana benthamiana plants. A polyclonal antiserum, with a titre of 1/128 in the tube precipitin test, was produced by immunising rabbits with purified virus. Viral antigens were detected in cassava, using both the double-antibody sandwich or plate-trapped antigen forms of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The virus reacted with antisera to the potexviruses potato virus X and tulip virus X in F(ab')2 ELISA. As determined by ELISA, isolates of CCMV from cassava and chaya are closely serologically related to each other. Leaf extracts from infected N. benthamiana plants were infective to a dilution of 10--4 but not 10--5; after heating for 10 min at 65 °C but not 70 °C; and after storage at room temperature for 14 days. The virus has a sedimentation coefficient of 126 S20,w, a single coat protein molecule of c . mol. wt 21 000, and a single-stranded RNA genome of c . mol. wt 2.0 ± 106. Several dsRNA species, including the putative viral replicative form of c . mol. wt 4.1 ± 106, were isolated from virus-infected cassava and N. benthamiana .  相似文献

The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for common wolf–fish Anarhichas lupus in the North Sea were: male: L ∞=111·2 cm, t 0=–0·43 and K =0·12; and female: L ∞=115·1 cm, t 0=–0·39 and K =0·11, making this the fastest growing stock reported. Resting metabolic rates (RMR±S.E.) and maximum metabolic rates (MMR±S.E.) for six adult common wolf–fish (mean weight, 1·39 kg) at 5° C were 12·18±1·6 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 and 70·65±7·63 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 respectively, and at 10° C were 25·43±1·31 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 and 113·84±16·26 mg O2 kg–1 h–1. Absolute metabolic scope was 53% greater at 10° C than at 5° C. The diet was dominated by Decapoda (39% overall by relative occurrence), Bivalvia (20%) and Gastropoda (12%). Sea urchins, typically of low energy value, occupied only 7% of the diet. The fast growth probably resulted from summer temperatures approximating to the optimum for food processing and growth, but may have been influenced by diet, and reduced competition following high fishing intensity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Various doses of a microsporan parasite, Nosema sp., were fed to third and fourth instar larvae of Lesioderma sericorne that infested different types of stored grains. A spore dose of 3 × 103 spores/individual resulted in a 39% infection rate, reduction in larval and adult weights, and mean spore concentrations of 1.28 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/larva and 1.1 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/adult. At the above dose, mortality was not well marked (about 35% in larvae and 25% in adults). At 3 × 104 spores/individual, the rate of mortality increases to 80% in larvae and 60% in adults. However, more of the pest population (88% of larvae and 73% of adults) died at a dose of 3 × 105 spores/individual. This dose produced mean spore concentrations of 3.91 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/larva and 2.89 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/adult. Insect death was caused by heavy damage to gut epithelia and fat bodies.  相似文献

The effects of suspension media and rate of freezing on the survival of Chlamydia trachomatis LGV2 and Chlamydia pneumoniae after lyophilization were assessed. The highest loss in infectious elementary bodies (EBs) occurred during lyophilization. The survival was higher after freezing at a rate of 1°C min-1 and lyophilization than that after rapid freezing at - 70°C or - 196°C. The recovery (± 5%) was higher when fetal calf serum (FCS) containing glucose, saccharose or lactose were used as lyophilization media than that (0.5–3%) when yolk-sac, skimmed milk or phosphate buffer containing sucrose, glutamine and 10% FCS (SPG) were used. After lyophilization, the survival was not affected in the tested range from 104 to 5 times 106 inclusion-forming units (ifu) ml-1 prior to freezing. After storage for 4 months at 4°C, the numbers of ifu of both Chlamydia serovars that were recovered were identical to the numbers of ifu immediately after lyophilization. It was concluded that chlamydias can be stored and transported in lyophilized form. However, a loss of 95% in infectious EBs should be taken into account.  相似文献

Underyearling Lake Inari Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were acclimated to 11·0) C for 3 weeks, and then one group was maintained at 11·0) C and others were exposed to 14·4) Cconst, 17·7) Cconst or a diel fluctuating temperature of 14·3° C ± 1° C (14·3° Cfluc). Routine rates of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were measured over 10 days before the temperature change and over 31 days following the change. Measurements were made on fish that were feeding and growing. The temperature increase produced an immediate increase in oxygen consumption. There was then a decline over the next few days, suggesting that thermal acclimation was rapid. For groups exposed to constant temperature there was an increase in oxygen consumption ( M accl, mg kg−1 h−1) with increasing temperature ( T ), the relationship being approximated by an exponential model: M accl= 46·53e0·086 T . At 14·3° Cfluc oxygen consumption declined during the 3–4 days following the temperature shift, but remained higher than at 14·4° Cconst. This indicates that small temperature fluctuations have some additional influences that increase metabolic rate. Ammonia excretion rates showed diel variations. Excretion was lower at 11° Cconst than at other temperatures, and increases in temperature had a significant effect on ammonia excretion rate. Fluctuating (14·3° Cfluc) temperature did not influence ammonia excretion relative to constant temperature (14·4° Cconst).  相似文献

Glucose utilization by spermatids was found to be 17.37±0.37 nmoles/hr/106 cells at 34°C and 28.94±1.12nmoles/hr/106 cells at 40°C. A good parallelism was observed between the increased rate of glucose utilization and lactate production at 40°C. There was no significant change in the levels of glycolytic intermediates in the cells, except for marked accumulations of fructose-1, 6-diphosphate, dihydroxyacetone phosphate and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate in the presence of glucose (1 mM). Glucose oxidation in the citrate cycle by spermatids was higher at 40°C than at 34°C, but was never greater than 2% of the overall rate of glucose utilization. In addition, glucose did not prevent decrease of ATP at either 34 or 40°C. The effects of temperature on the activities of 11 glycolytic enzymes were examined. The activities of aldolase and phosphoglyceromutase were similar between 30 and 34°C, but increased markedly at 40°C. The higher temperature increased the Vmax values, without affecting the Kms. The activities of other glycolytic enzymes were similar at the different temperatures. These findings indicate that the increased overall rate of glucose utilization in glycolysis at higher temperature is due to increased Vmax values of aldolase and phosphoglyceromutase.  相似文献

Survival of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was determined in oyster meat homogenates at various temperatures. (4°C, 0°C, -18°C and -24°C) and bacterial levels (102, 104, 105 and 107 ml-1). In all cases, the numbers of V. parahaemolyticus were a logarithmic function of log time. This study indicates that high numbers of V. parahaemolyticus can be inactivated at low temperatures. The time of total inactivation depends on the initial number of micro-organisms and incubation temperature. It is possible to use this information to determine the storage time necessary to reduce V. parahaemolyticus hazards in fish.  相似文献

Abstract.  The effect of long-term (seasonal) acclimation and rapid cold hardening is investigated on the cold torpor temperature ( CT min) of adult grain aphids, Sitobion avenae, reared at 20 or 10 °C for more than 6 months before experimentation. Rapid cold hardening is induced by exposing aphids reared at 20 to 0 °C for 3 h and aphids reared at 10 to 0 °C for 30 min (acclimation regimes previously found to induce maximum rapid cold hardening). The effect of cooling aphids from the same rearing regimes from 10 to −10 °C at 1, 0.5 and 0.1 °C min−1 is also investigated. In the 20 °C acclimated population, rapid cold hardening and cooling at 0.1 °C min−1 both produce a significant decrease in CT min from 1.5 ± 0.3 to –0.9 ± 0.3 and –1.3 ± 0.3 °C, respectively. Rapid cold hardening also results in a significant reduction in CT min of the population reared at 10 °C from 0.8 ± 0.1 to –0.9 ± 0.2 °C. However, none of the cooling regimes tested reduces the CT min of the winter-acclimated (10 °C) population. The present study demonstrates that rapid cold-hardening induced during the cooling phase of natural diurnal temperature cycles could lower the movement threshold of S. avenae , allowing insects to move and continue feeding at lower temperatures than would otherwise be possible.  相似文献

Juvenile Moses perch were fed various rations of penaeid prawn and pilchard foods at 26.4 and 28.7° C to elucidate feeding–growth relationships. Maintenance rations amounted to 5.0 and 3.8% of body weight per day (BW day–1) on prawn and pilchard diets, respectively, at 26.4° C and 4.5% BW day 1 for prawn at 28.7° C. This apparent reduction in maintenance ration at higher temperature is probably due to reduction in activity levels. Starvation weight loss, an indicator of resting metabolic rate, increased with temperature and exhibited a Q10 of 2.0 to 2.4.
Fish fed ad libitum once or twice per day at 26.4° C grew at 1.1 % BW day–1 and ingested about 9% of their BW day–1. At 28.7° C fish ingested about 8% of their BW day–1 and grew 1 .0% BW day–1. These growth rates are comparable to those of similar sized lutjanids in the wild. Since prawns comprise 64% of the diet of Moses perch in northern Australia, this level of consumption would require about 6% BW day–1 of prawns. The relevance of these findings to the assessment of predator impact on prawns in Australian estuaries is discussed.  相似文献

Turbot Scophthalmus maximus maximum oxygen uptake following feeding and exhaustive exercise increased from 107 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 6° C to c . 218 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 18° C, then increased slightly from 18 to 22° C to 224 mg O2 kg−1 h−1. Standard oxygen uptake increased exponentially as a function of temperature from 11 mg O2 kg −1 h−1 at 6° C to 66 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 22° C. Gradual reduction in oxygen concentration to 87–90% air saturation at 6, 10. 18° C and <80% at 14 and 22° C limited the maximum metabolic rate but, supersaturation (>100% saturation) had little effect. Metabolic scope attained a maximum of 176 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 18° C. Interpolation of the results showed that this value changed little between 16 and 20° C. It is suggested that this temperature range is optimal for turbot of c . 500 g. A comparison with a previous study on feeding demand in intensive farming conditions showed a linear relationship between appetite and metabolic scope. It is concluded that the ability of a fish to supply energy (including the energy requirement of digestive metabolism) above a standard level is a limiting factor in the manifestation of its feeding demand.  相似文献

Rates of oxygen consumption were measured in the geothermal, hot spring fish, Oreochromis alcalicus grahami by stopped flow respirometry. At 37° C, routine oxygen consumption followed the allometric relationship: V o2=0.738 M 0.75, where V o2 is ml O2 h −1 and M is body mass (g). This represents a routine metabolic rate for a 10 g fish at 37° C of 0.415 ml O2 g−1 h −1 (16.4 μmol O2 g −1 h −1). Acutely increasing the temperature from 37 to 42° C significantly elevated the rate of O2 consumption from 0.739 to 0.970 ml O2 g −1 h −1 ( Q 10=l.72). In the field, O. a. grahami was observed to be 'gulping' air from the surface of the water especially in hot springs that exceeded 40° C. O. a. grahami may utilize aerial respiration when O2 requirements are high.  相似文献

Inputs and outputs of allochthonous particulate organic matter were measured during 15 months in the upper part of a beech forest headwater stream. Inputs were estimated to 716 g m−2 yr−1, and leaves made up 71%. Outputs were estimated to 535 g m−2 yr−1 and consisted mainly of FPOM (92%). Therefore, a significant transformation of CPOM into FPOM took place. The mean FPOM concentration varied between 0.6 and 3.4 mg 1−1, but the daily variations greatly surpassed the seasonal variations. As discharge was rather constant, the observed variations were due to external disturbances, especially precipitation.
A tentative scheme for leaf processing is established from the present data and previous studies in the area, indicating that a significant part takes place in the MPOM pool and that microbial and invertebrate processing make up about 50% each of total intra-system processing.  相似文献

Abstract— Slices from various regions of rat brain, incubated at 25°C, rapidly accumulate [3H]GABA from the surrounding medium until after 60min tissue:medium ratios as high as 300 may be achieved. Kinetic analysis has demonstrated two distinct uptake systems for GABA in all the brain regions examined. One system has a relatively high substrate affinity ( Km = 1.2 ± 10-5 M) while the other has a lower affinity ( Km = 4 ± 10-4 M). Studies at low GABA concentration (5 ± 10-8 M), as well as estimates of maximum velocities, have shown that the distribution of the high affinity uptake system is heterogeneous. Cortex, hypothala mus, midbrain and hippocampus have relatively high uptake rates while the striatum, cerebellum and pons and medulla have a lower uptake rate. Maximum velocities for the low affinity uptake system show much less regional variation.
Lithium, either added to the incubation medium or fed to rats, had no effect on the uptake of GABA by cortical slices.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of 6 carps was measured in a flow-through respirometer when water temperature was reduced from 23 to 7°C and increased from 23 to 33°C as well as from 11 to 32°C. The metabolic reaction of Cyprinus carpio L. was assessed at 3 levels: standard, routine and spontaneous. The Standard Metabolic Rate increased and the Q10 decreased with rising temperatures. A quadratic relation was established between metabolic rates and temperature level. The enery exenditure above Standard Metabolic Rate induced by temperature changes was 6.65 ± 1.97 kJ kg-0.8 d-1 (x ± S.E., N = 6).
Costs for temperature acclimatization amounted to 29 %, 24 % and 9 % of the energy required for standard, routine and spontaneous action metabolism, respectively.

Temperaturinduzierte Stoffwechselerhöhungen bei Karpfen , Cyprinus carpio L., während Warm- und Kaltakklimatisierung
Wir haben untersucht, wie der Stoffwechsel von Cyprinus carpio im Standard-, Routine- und Spontanniveau während einer Kalt- und Warmakklimatisierung im Bereich von 7–33 °C reagiert. Dieses Verhalten wurde mit Hilfe eines Durchfluß-Respirometers ermittelt. Die "Standard Metabolic Rate" nahm zu und der Q10 verringerte sich mit steigender Temeratur.
Eine quadratische Beziehung besteht zwischen den Stoffwechselraten und dem Temperaturniveau. Die durch Temperaturänderun induzierte Stoffwechselerhöhung über die Standardrate wurde für den Meßbereich mit 6.65 ± 1.97 kJ kg-0.8 d-1 (x ± S.E., N = 6) ermittelt.
Der Anteil temperaturinduzierter Aufwendungen entsprach 29%, 24% und 9% des Standard-, Routine- und Spontanverbrauches an Energie.  相似文献
